Among many careers that Signature team members have considered over the years, becoming a food taster, a mattress tester, and a personal shopper have always scored high on the top vocation choices list. Of course, the next best thing was to become a journalist and get to do all of the above; for purely professional reasons of course! But then becoming a personal shopper is not that easy (neither is mattress testing for that matter! You can actually have a bad bed day) especially when it involves having to help others pick what they want. For the uninitiated, a personal shopper is someone who gives advice on how to shop. They are often employed by department stores and boutiques (although some are freelancers or work exclusively online). Their focus is usually on clothes, although the number of non-clothing stores - such as furniture retailers - that offer personal shopping services is on the rise, and many freelance personal shoppers will help customers shop in whatever item they happen to be after. DE-STRESS THERAPY! TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF SHOPPING, SAYS STEVE HARVEY, WELLNESS MANAGER AT SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY
Do you love shopping so much that it has become your therapy of choice? Or are you one of the many who find shopping in congested malls a stressful ordeal? Whether you’re shopping for yourself or for others, here are some tips to make your life a whole lot less stressful. 1. Plan your budget. Once you know your budget and what you’re going to be spending it on…stick to it. Don’t overspend because it will only hurt you physically and mentally at the end. 2. Be aware of emotional spending. Create a shopping plan. Know what you want before you shop and be aware of emotional spending. 3. Wear comfortable shoes. One great way to avoid shopping stress is to stay away from the mall and shop online. If you do have to go to the mall, wear comfortable shoes. Aching feet can make shopping a dreaded chore. Divide your shopping into several trips, instead of trying to do everything in one day. 4. Create lists – needs versus wants. Next determine where you are going to purchase each item. Do your price comparison research online to find the best deals. Determine the order of the stores you’re going to be visiting. Plan to purchase larger, heavier items last and park your vehicle close by. 5. Drink lots of water. Shopping can be dehydrating and you don’t want to exhaust yourself. Watch what you eat. Avoid junk food at the food court 6. If you need to, schedule a baby sitter. Allow at least four hours. If you finish you’re shopping early go treat yourself to a nice lunch before heading back home. 7. Maintain an attitude of gratitude. Its amazing how differently you look at the world when you are grateful for all of your experiences. Taking a little extra time to organise your shopping may seem like a bit of work, but it is worth the stress it eliminates.

VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG The Touareg, Volkswagen’s first venture into the luxury offroad market, was launched in 2003. Since then and having undergone a substantial update in 2007, the Touareg has built up a loyal following across the world. Last year saw the arrival of the new Touareg. While it maintains all the virtues of space, comfort, refinement and off-road and towing ability which have made the Touareg so popular, it takes the model forward thanks to the use of lightweight construction techniques, more fuel-efficient engines and new technologies. Its Clean new styling draws inspiration from the design direction established by the Golf Mk VI and new Polo – the so-called Volkswagen design DNA. Despite being lower and thus appearing sleeker, the new Touareg is larger than the previous model. If you go to a supermarket, chances are that the fish you bought, have been sold from here, put on a truck and sent to Dubai, sold in a fish market in Dubai, and sold back to the supermarket market here. So, you should support the local markets if you want the freshest and best value product. Always shop with all your senses, if the product looks great, smells great and feels great then it will certainly be great.” FAVOURITE FOOD STOPS “Penang, I would say is probably the best destination in the world from a food point of view. You’ve got unique cultures there. You have Malay, Chinese and Indian influences in the food and street food (Hawker) has become a major factor why people visit Penang. Origin of the carpet There are traditionally only three regions in the world for making hand-knotted silk carpets, namely Iran, Kashmir, and Turkey. Silk carpets from any other region are probably copies of carpets from the above three regions Size of the carpet There are standard sizes of hand-knotted silk rugs, although the measurement of sizes differ depending on the regions; the Persian and Turkish rugs are measured in metres and Kashmiri carpets are measured in feet .So if an average living room carpet from Iran or Turkey is 2m by 3m, then the Kashmiri one is 6ft by 9ft. Quality of materials As silk is produced in many places in the world, oriental rug makers tend to procure the best from the world for Iranian and Turkish carpets. The silk usually comes from China, whereas for Kashmiri rugs locally produced mulberry cocoon silk is used. Knot Density The science behind the knot density is same as a DPI quality for an image, the higher the DPI the better the resolution of the print, likewise higher the knot density the better the weave and look of the carpet. The difference being that higher the knot density, more the labour intensity and craftsmanship is required. Dyes Used Traditionally vegetable dyes were used to colour silks, but now with modern technology special dyes from Switzerland are used. These safeguard the colours from bleeding into each other. Colour Combination This is one of the most important aspect in the making of a rug. Normally, in an oriental rug more than 16 hues of colours are used, the better the combination the more appealing the rug would be. Design of the Carpet As carpet-making is a traditional art, we have constrains when it comes to designs. If we modernise the designs they become contemprary rugs and tend to lose the genre of oriental, but the oriental arts design library is exhaustive and we never feel the constrains. THE RIGHT GEAR ALEX DAY ON HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GOLF EQUIPMENT… Last month we talked about how to take up the great game of golf. I hope you have already enquired into your ‘Discover Golf’ programme and are now chomping at the bit. Once you’re under way and making good progress the next step is to choose the necessary equipment to enjoy on the fairways and greens. This is often dependent on a number of factors, your body shape, personal style/preference and your swing characteristics. When people started playing the ancient game of golf, they were using just a wooden stick and a featherie (ball made by leather and stuffed with feathers). It has been said that “golf” came from the Dutch word the Scottish people used for their wooden sticks “kolf”, meaning “bat”or “club”. But nowadays the golf equipment industry, like with so many industries, has become hugely scientific. The world’s leading manufacturers are continually striving for their major product launch with new innovations to gain the majority market share. ndeed top scientists have become involved in these large companies to squeeze just a few more yards out of any given club or ball. The game is certainly now less difficult than when I first took it up. Being a multimillion dollar industry there are obviously many manufacturers eager to grab the consumers attention. It’s not only a case of choosing a suitable brand but there’s also the dilemma of the type of clubs/balls and set make up. The maximum number of clubs a golfer can carry is 14. Between the driver (the most expensive and flashy club) and the putter (the most important club) we have fairway woods, hybrids, irons and wedges to chose from, all of which are designed to do a different job. You’ve then the predicament of choosing which type and colour of bag that’s going to carry the clubs and the type of ball you’re going to hopefully hit straight around the course. Whilst when you are first starting out in the game these decisions are not vital to your performance, because your instructor will choose and submit for you the right ones. But once you start playing more often and develop consistency, you need to buy your own ones and the type of equipment will definitely become a big deal. As a consumer with so many options available to you, it’s advisable to seek advice from a PGA qualified professional. Not only will they explain which type of equipment will benefit your game most, but also assist you in being custom fitted. Buying golf equipment can be compared to buying a suit.
A golfer who is six foot tall needs a different suit to a golfer who is five foot tall and being measured for your golf equipment is no different. Ping, one of the major golf brands, was the pioneer of club fitting and decades on are still undisputed club fitting leaders. Depending on the particular model and specification a full set of Ping irons (9) can cost anywhere between OMR 350 and 600. Of course there are cheaper options. In terms of choosing a golf ball, being custom fitted can also be of benefit. Whether you swing the club fast or slow will determine the correct compression of ball. Another major golf brand is Titleist - the number 1 ball manufacturer on all world tours. A sleeve of Titleist golf balls (3) can cost anywhere between OMR 2.5 and 8.5. The bottom line is that whilst technology is making the game more thrilling (and easier), it’s also a game of confidence and you must be comfortable with what you are feeling and looking down at. Having worked as a custom fit specialist for two years, I have seen many golfers, in fact, play better golf with equipment that wasn’t necessarily the most forgiving. Regardless of their ability, amongst the latest technology many golfers will still have in their bag an old trusty club they just cannot part company with.

I have never been able to walk into this store without my heart racing and perhaps skipping a few beats, even. PARIS, FRANCE COLLETTE This is an institution for us fashionistas. It is a destination for all things cool, current and at most times will set the trend. Top designers collaborate with the store like Chanel with a graffiti artist, yes, have your 2.55 bag custom sprayed by a graffiti artist or the most recent event has been the celebration of Fendi’s Baguette bags. The installation and limited edition bags were only available at this store during Haute Couture week. It’s a place to find books, DVDs, Ready-to-Wear and cool sales staff will make sure you leave on trend. L’ECLAIREUR The effortless and chic ability Parisians have when it comes to dressing is all down to their inherent style, but a store like this helps. With a well edited collection of Valentino, Givenchy and upcoming French labels, the store, located on 26 avenue des Champs Elysées, is worth the visit next time you are in the City of Lights. START Founded by Philip and Brix, Start (59 Rivington St, EC2) found a gap in the market as there was nowhere to shop directional and designer fashion in up and coming Shoreditch area back in early 2000, which I might add is now the hot spot in London with cool eateries like Pizza East and Shoreditch House (sister to Soho House) and a huge art scene. The Start family had the right vision to establish in a trendy area which is rapidly growing. The edits are very directional and the customer gets a new shopping experience compared to your typical shopping destinations.
LONDON, UK MATCHES A designer multi-brand store which started in Wimbledon Village has now expanded to little villages all over London, including Notting Hill and Marylebone. Giving customers an international offering with a “London” sensibility and such is the charm of this store that customers keep coming back for more. It is summer … while this is the time to go out and enjoy outdoor activities in other regions of the world, temperatures soar too high and humidity becomes often unbearable in the Middle East. So, what can one do? Well, let’s enjoy a day out at the mall! We park our car and enter the buzzing world of sales. Every once in a while, our leisurely stroll down the alleys of shops deserves a break for closer examination of some goods or for some passive participation in an attraction. When exhausted, we relax in one of the coffee shops and watch people passing by, or have a quick bite to eat. An afternoon, six shopping bags and a full stomach later, we return home with a smile. Shopping malls are much more than just an arrangement of shops gathered under one roof. They are semi-private spaces with socioeconomical functions for the urban environment it is in. It is where people meet, exchange news, socialise, eat and trade goods. The roots reach far back and originate in the souqs and bazaars of Isfahan, Tehran and Damascus. The Grand Bazaar of Istanbul is still one of the largest, covered markets in the world, extending over fifty-eight streets and integrating over four thousand shops. The history of modern malls started in the USA after World War II; people moved to suburbs and became more
mobile which encouraged developments in the periphery of the city and close to major roadways. From the early beginning on, the key success factors of lively malls were defined and have not changed much ever since. The anchor store, usually a department store and in older history the market place, draws visitors into the mall and, hence, increase retail traffic for smaller stores. Larger malls have more than one anchor store. The stores are located as far apart from each other as possible in order to maximize pedestrian flow in the mall. Small shops provide the diversity to the mall. These shops line along the pathways between the anchor stores and are usually grouped according to trades. Last but not least, there are the food courts, the fuelling stations of every exhausted shopper! Shared common areas between numerous food stalls not only reduce cost of operation but also allow one party to order from different restaurants. The food courts are a destination in every mall. The dishes are usually inexpensive and quickly prepared and eaten – this ensures more money and time is available for shopping. And as there is a direct, positive correlation between time and money spent in a mall, many shopping centres also provide attractions for young and old: game
zones, cinemas, amusement parks, skating rinks, ski slopes, aquariums, art centres, … the list could go on forever. So, what is next? While over-regional super-malls have their right of existence for weekend excursions, many people start to prefer shopping centres geared to the human scale and located in their community to avoid long commutes, the hassle of finding a parking, the immense crowd and the overwhelming situation of too many choices. These convenience malls might not provide the ultimate thrill but serve well for daily shopping and as centre for the community. Available attractions are less activity-loaded but then again, some seating area or a fountain functions like a public place and does wonders form a socio-economical point of view. It also unveils that the shopping experience is not only linked to spending money but to interacting with other people. The integration of the mall into the community has also another effect: the mall requires a face. Earlier malls were introverted, an anonymous box separated from its environment with a dead zone of parking lots and with a rabbit hole to enter the world of consumption. Any theming, if at all, happened only in the inside. Newer malls have a welcoming façade that embeds the building into its surroundings and that lends itself visually to serve as a landmark. Interesting is also the fact that while many people living in extreme climate like temperature-controlled environments during the harsh period of the year, most of them prefer outdoor shopping during the mild seasons. Some developers understood this demand and designed retractable roofs and large-scale opening facades. Shopping malls are not anymore planned at the edges of cities and people have to come to them. The malls go where people are – to communities and urban centres. Malls link to hotels and residential developments, connect to transportation hubs and stretch between office towers. Due to high land prices in downtown areas, shopping malls start to develop vertically. Atriums and mezzanine levels provide visual orientation across the building, escalators ensure a continuous flow of pedestrian traffic. Empty shops are the nightmare of every mall operator not only because of missing revenue from rent but also because customers avoid such areas. An innovative concept overcomes this issue: a kiosk is integrated into the hoarding covering the empty shop. The benefits are manifold: entrepreneurial businesses have a chance to enter malls, and the diversity of the shopping center increases which enhances its attractiveness for the customers. The operators, on the other hand, generate revenue while looking for new tenants and activate areas that were otherwise little visited. Well, the summer is not over yet. It is still too hot and humid to go outside. So, what to do? Let’s meet up at our community centre!
