LAUGH, LIVE, STAY FIT

How does one define wellness? Is it physical health? Is it mental health? Or is it a bit of both? We routinely see references made to wellness being a “state of well-being,” or it being defined as a “state of acceptance or satisfaction with our present condition.” Of course, wellness and good health go hand in hand! As a state of health, wellness is closely linked to your lifestyle and the choices you make. Each individual has a responsibility to themselves to provide for the essentials of good health – proper weight control, good nutrition, physical activity and exercise, and controlling of health risk factors, spa treatments and massages, healthy travel and healthy eating habits. All said and done, it is the integration of the spirit, body and the mind; and the understanding that everything we do, feel, think and believe has a direct impact on your state of health and well-being that makes health and wellness such an important aspect of our lives.

whiff of orange The new interpretation of the Elie Saab’s olfactory signature, Elie Saab Le Parfum, eau de toilette enriches the olfactory signature introduced by Elie Saab. Like a couture dress fashioned in precious chiffon, the perfumer sketches out a new, more crystalline, almost evanescent orange blossom, mingled with a soft, subtle rose honey note, all combined to create an olfactive addiction similar to the eau de parfum. When distilled into the new olfactory offering, the freshness of the mandarin tree blossom, the round sensuality of the gardenia and the sparkling vibrancy of vetiver act like sequins thoughtfully stitched onto a couture gown, and with each movement, give the fragrance a new rhythm that is punctuated by impertinence and spontaneity.

sport this True to its origins, Chanel Eau Extrême is a direct offshoot of Allure Homme Sport but with a decidedly more aromatic personality. Mint kicks things off from the very first scent, along with a refreshing pulsation upheld by Sicilian Mandarin rind and Moroccan Cypress. Discreet but present, Clary Sage adds a touch of warmth, an almost amber plant-like sensuality. Behind the rustic array lies a White Musk accord selected for its cottony soft and subtly animal intonations. And above all, the round, almondy note of Tonka Bean is used to create intensity. One thing is for certain: the Allure Homme Sport Eau Extrême Eau De Toilette Concentrée gives a fresh boost on the skin.

EVENT

CHAMPIONING A GREEN CAUSE OMAN GREEN AWARDS (OGA) HAS ROLLED OUT THE ‘GREEN’ CARPET FOR ITS THIRD ANNUAL PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS CEREMONY TO BE HELD ON JUNE 5 AT AL BUSTAN PALACE HOTEL, MUSCAT

O

man Green Awards (OGA), Sultanate’s first environmental award to honour outstanding environmental vision, endeavours and achievements of corporates and individuals, will hold the third edition of its prestigious award ceremony on June 5 at Al Bustan Palace, A RitzCarlton Hotel. HE Mohammed Salim Said al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, will preside over the function as the chief guest and felicitate winners of the nine different categories of the awards. OGA is the ultimate recognition for companies, institutions and individuals in Oman, who demonstrate a commitment towards responsible consumption and sustainable growth. OGA honours and celebrates their vision in leading the way to a cleaner, greener tomorrow; and offers a unique opportunity to be part of a national platform for this cause.

The event is being held in association with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Ministry of Health and Muscat Municipality; and representatives from these august organisations will attend the green celebrations, which coincide with the World Environment Day. It has received massive support from corporate houses and individuals who have made green mission a priority. Oman Oil Marketing Company and OCTAL have joined OGA as strategic partners and Sadolin as the support partner to keep the green torch burning bright in the country. The media partners include Times of Oman and Al Shabiba while Infoline is the call centre for the event. Conceived from a perceived need to motivate behavioural change and increase awareness in relation to the protection and preservation of our environment, the OGA has been able to make the corporates, individuals and organisations in the country more serious about building environmental sustainability into their business practices. Conceptualised and initiated by Sultanate’s premier business magazine OER in 2010, OGA has evolved as an umbrella organisation bringing together corporate houses, institutions, individuals and schools etc. who are involved in relentless efforts to protect and preserve the environment; and facilitating better coordination and exchange of ideas. Its three-fold objectives focus on boosting local environmental efforts and achievements; providing green groups a platform for concerted action; and raising awareness and generating greater action. The last two editions of the OGA were a resounding success in meeting its stated objectives

SERVICE WITH A SMILE

ANTHONY MAHONEY, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER – BANKDHOFAR, ANSWERS DEEPA RAJAN'S QUERIES ON BANKING AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE

H

aving graduated in the mid 1980’s with an honours degree in Business Administration, Anthony (Tony) Mahoney went on to further his education at the Institute of Banking. Tony has gained extensive experience at the most senior level working across numerous countries. His most recent position, held since 2008, was Deputy CEO, Continental Europe, HSBC where he was responsible for a team of 31,000 people in 23 countries. Prior to taking over as BankDhofar’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tony led HSBCs network of 1500 branches and 120 corporate banking teams in UK. In a free-wheeling interview with Signature, Tony talks shop and more…

15-year-old whose favourite newspaper was Financial Times, so I guess it was only natural to go into a career that revolved around cash. Having left university, I considered a number of different options, and considered that the banks offered the best graduate programme schemes. Ironically, the bank I decided to join was the one where my wife, who I had already met in school, was already working in. Quite a coincidence!”

What got you into banking? “I always loved money, since a very early age and was forever earning money as a child cleaning cars, delivering newspapers and helping out in shops. I was the only

As a banking professional, travel is a must. How does your family deal with this? Do they travel with you? “During my previous role with HSBC bank I once took 120 flights in 1 year and felt as

20

Bankers are usually seen as people having a serious disposition... how would you describe yourself as a person? “Whilst I can be serious, very often I have to be; my natural inclination is to see the funny side of life and I think a good joke can calm many difficult situations and that a smile is much more enjoyable than a frown.”

though I was on first name terms with the airport staff. I loved to travel and believe that there is no substitute for visiting a business, our customers and our staff and indeed in Oman have already visited 1/3 of our branch network. Balancing this with the family life has always been a challenge, but I have a very supportive wife and devote every part of my spare time to family. And yes Angela has joined me in some of the visits to places like Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Almaty and sometimes I think she could do my job much better than I can.” How does one walk the tight rope between finding time for the family and work? “Whilst I was working away from home extensively, it was often possible to work from home one day per week, which was a great chance to catch up with calls, emails etc. But this also gave me a chance to be at home, enjoying the country side of Wales. It was often quite amazing when on conference calls to colleagues, who I knew to be working in very grey buildings around the world. Or at

least I thought they were, whilst I was looking out over beautiful fields and rolling hills.” What are the first few words that come to mind when someone asks you to describe the beauty of a boardroom? “I have never considered the boardroom to be beautiful. I much prefer to be with our customers and staff than sitting in board meetings. However, the board room at HSBC in London is spectacular and features the longest and widest table I have seen in my life. It resulted in an embarrassing moment during my first meeting, when I tried to pass a paper from one side to another, which got stuck in the middle-way, out of reach. The only solution was to for me to remove my shoes and crawl across the table to retrieve it. The boardroom at BankDhofar is much more homely and has been the scene of many long, late productive meetings, so I guess the answer is the only beautiful boardroom is a productive one where we debate what is important to our staff and customers and get things done.”

When you are not crunching numbers, what is it that you love to do the most? “I love all sports. I enjoyed both playing and training soccer, running, skiing, swimming and more recently took up horse riding and show jumping. I never quite managed to jump to any great heights, but have many sporting injuries as memories of my efforts.” In today’s world, power dressing is an essential part of the whole package. Your take on this? “I am a firm believer that it is not how senior you are or how you dress that is mostly important. But that what is key, is that we earn our respect by both supporting and challenging our people. But I like to be professional in my dress code and try to match up my ties and shirts often with very limited success. My worse memory is leaving Wales in darkness to travel to work at 4 a.m and arriving in London, before I realised I was wearing the trousers of one suite and jacket of another – not a good look.”

What does one always find in a banker’s wardrobe? “Ties - I probably have more ties than Imelda Marcos has shoes and seem to keep collecting wherever I go. I also have a wide range of double cuff shirts, as I love wearing my Welsh dragon cuff links.” What according to you are your best investments so far? “Probably my best investments are my wife Angela and children Rachel and Dominic. But, financially I enjoy buying properties and managed to build up a portfolio around the world, which my wife successfully manages on my behalf. I also invested in an iPad when it first came out and would be totally lost without it." “Whilst not strictly investment, I have also enjoyed a number of nice cars and particularly loved my Porsche Cayenne, which seemed to be capable of doing just about anything. That was always my special treat to myself."

METEORIC RISE The story of Roger Dubuis is anything but ordinary... Someone once said that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you. The success story of Roger Dubuis is exactly that. It is the passion and personal calling of two exemplary men, one a talented master watchmaker and the other a brilliant designer. Established in 1995, the company originated from a decisive encounter between watchmaker Roger Dubuis and designer and entrepreneur Carlos Dias.

22

The Innovation Marque Innovation drives creation at Roger Dubuis. This determination to explore new horizons and push back boundaries has produced important technical advances. The specialities that now distinguish production by Manufacture Roger Dubuis include Tourbillon and double tourbillon, Instantaneous in-line perpetual calendar, Microrotor and double micro-rotor and Contemporary skeleton movements.

THE HEART OF FINE WATCHMAKING There can be no fine watchmaking without complicated mechanical movements. And the only way to propose original calibres is to master production; in other words, to be at the head of the most integrated manufacturing facilities possible. It took the company just four years to achieve this. The manufacturing structure was fully in place by 1999. Six years after spreading its wings, in 2001 in Meyrin-Geneva, Roger Dubuis embarked on the construction of an avant-garde building for the company’s headquarters, integrated production facilities and offices. As both success and the number of staff grew, the first extension was added four years later, bringing the total size of the Manufacture to 14,500sqm, and an impressive fleet of 120 machines. Ladies, and gentlemen, the brand had finally arrived in the world of fine watchmaking. And, what an arrival! SEAL OF PERFECTION In 2003, the capacity to manufacture in-house the balance and spring – then an exceptional feat – marked a fundamental stage. Henceforth, Roger Dubuis could produce every movement part in complete independence. In April 2006, six new movements were presented at Geneva’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), three of them for the first time. They were fitted mainly in the Excalibur models, one of the brand’s flagship collections, and bring the number of movements manufactured to 28, each of which is hallmarked with the Poinçon de Genève (See box). In 2007 an exhibition organised at the SIHH displayed all 28 movements, thereby demonstrating the brand’s exceptional heritage. Year 2008 saw the launch of the Kingsquare collection and Roger Dubuis inclusion into the Richemont luxury group.

FOCUS

RAISING THE BAR Renowned for their powerful design, the Excalibur, EasyDiver, KingSquare, GoldenSquare and La Monégasque collections integrate the defining features of the brand. Voluminous cases with transparent backs, imposing crowns, stylised Roman numerals, three lugs to secure the strap to the case, and the tourbillon cage in the form of a Celtic cross are all hallmarks of a Roger Dubuis watch. Echoing the creative aesthetics of Roger Dubuis timepieces, the Manufacture has proved remarkably dynamic in developing an exceptional portfolio of thirty-one mechanical movements in fifteen years, from a simple self-winding movement to a grande complication calibre. In 2009, the brand launched an extensive programme to further reinforce its inhouse quality and control procedures – beyond those imposed by the Poinçon de Genève – that would elevate its timepieces to new standards of quality in avant-garde Fine Watchmaking. Rest, as the cliché goes, is history. The Roger Dubuis tale of success is something that legends are made of. Sparta’s favourite warrior and a friend of the brand put it best when he visited the manufacture recently. He said, “Watchmaking is just like the cinema, it hides a precise mechanism which must then generate emotion. The world of Roger Dubuis, the arrival of its collections, like spaces of freedom, perfectly matches my principles. You need to take chances in life and always push yourself.” Over fifteen years, the brand has shown remarkable creativity, unfailing audacity, expertise that speaks for itself and excellence every step of the way. Building on an exclusive global sales network, it continues with its original brand of technically outstanding, aesthetically stunning timepieces to further surprise and seduce admirers and connoisseurs of avant-garde watchmaking.

Excalibur 42 Automatic in steel

The RD Worlds The four different ‘fantasy worlds’, introduced at SIHH last year, are based on the RD principle of extravagant design and incredible mechanics. These four different styles include Excalibur – the world of the warrior; La Monegasque – the world of the player; Pulsion for the adventurer; the Velvet for the divas. The four worlds draw on new technologies and address different target groups, but the underlying principle remains the same: combining the best of differentiated design and state-of-the art movements.

FOCUS The Poinçon de Genève The city of Geneva had already developed a long tradition of goldsmithing and jewellerymaking when watchmaking began there in the sixteenth century. This burgeoning industry was heir to the refined workmanship and love of beauty of Geneva’s goldsmiths. Thus watches and their movements were crafted as though they were jewels. The desire for absolute perfection and attention to the smallest detail, matched by the highest degree of mechanical precision and expertise, forged the reputation for excellence that Geneva’s watches took out into the world. The Poinçon de Genève came into effect in 1886. Conferred on a handful of manufacturers by the State of Geneva, it is the official guarantee that the watch’s mechanical movement was hand-made, assembled and adjusted in Geneva, and the assurance that it meets with the highest standards of horological craftsmanship. Still today, the Poinçon de Genève remains the preserve of just a few fine watch manufactures in Geneva. Furthermore, Roger Dubuis is one of those whose movements are all, without exception, certified by the Poinçon de Genève. For more details log on to www.rogerdubuis. com . The Sifawy Boutique Hotel sits on an expanse of white sand at the crystal clear waters near the fishing town of Sifah, and at the foot of the great Hajar mountain range that forms a bastion again the fierce, dry winds of the interior. Whatever the reason for their presence, the purpose is one and the same. Relaxation.

INVEST TIME, ENERGY

STEVE HARVEY, WELLNESS MANAGER AT SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY, ON TIPS TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY MIND AND BODY…

Staying mentally and physically fit takes work and requires an investment of time and energy. One way to ensure that you maintain a balance between your emotional and physical wellness is to set goals for yourself that are in alignment with your hierarchy of values. If you look closely you will discover that you always find the time, energy and money to do that which is high on your values. Below are ten tips for a healthy body and mind. EAT HEALTHY Well nourished bodies are better prepared to cope with stress. Start each day with breakfast, preferably whole grain cereals and fruit and maintain balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day. Limit caffeine and sugars in your diet. Drink 8 glasses of water a day. There's something mystical about water; it helps us make transformations that alter our entire physical, mental and spiritual outlook. MEDITATE Take time to be still, how else can you receive? Relax into the quietness within yourself where you feel as if external thoughts or activities are no longer relevant. The unique state of restful alertness gained during meditation promotes health by reducing

34

activation of the sympathetic nervous system – which in turn dilutes the blood vessels and reduces stress hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. PERFORM RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS We feel greater self-worth and more successful when we provide services for others. There's a touch of the Good Samaritan in all of us, therefore, there is wisdom in setting aside special time in our daily routines for doing something that helps another person. Doing things for others is a great tonic when you’re feeling down. Helping a friend, family or a community organization can make you feel included and empowered. PRACTICE YOGA The benefits of yoga are extensive. Not only does yoga affect the physical aspect of the body, it addresses the mind and spirit as well. Through the practice of yoga, we become aware of the interconnectedness between our emotional, mental and physical levels. New research done by Ohio State University suggests a regular practice of yoga may lower an inflammatory protein that is normally linked to aging and stress.

LAUGH Nothing makes you feel better about yourself or the world around you than a good laugh. It’s great medicine, especially if you can learn to laugh at yourself. Laughter can be very therapeutic so try to incorporate laughter into your day. MAKE TIME FOR FUN Make time for leisure activities that bring you joy, whether it be reading, watching a movie, connecting with others or taking a bath. Your body needs time to take a break from your responsibilities and recharge. IDENTIFY AND QUESTION the thoughts that cause you stress using ‘The Work of Byron Katie’. The Work is a way to first identity, and then question the thoughts that cause you stress. It is simply a set of questions that you can ask regarding any stressful thought. Here Are The Four Questions and Turnarounds: 1. Is it true? 2. Can you absolutely know it’s true?

3. How do you react when you believe that thought? 4. Who would you be without that thought? Turnarounds: Could the opposite be as true? INCORPORATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Keeping your body active and physically strong provides benefits for your mental well-being as it plays a role in reducing and preventing stress. Remember to make time for yourself. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise three times a week. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS each night and end your day with thanks. Faster than any state of mind, gratitude can transform stress into success. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Besides exercising and eating well, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep, preferably eight hours of un-interrupted sleep. Deep restorative sleep allows us to repair and regenerate and recharge. Sleep is a universal prerequisite to health and happiness

FORGET FITNESS, PLAY GOLF! ALEX DAY, PGA PROFESSIONAL AND HEAD INSTRUCTOR AT MUSCAT HILLS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, ON PLAYING THE SPORT FOR HEALTHY REASONS…

G

olf is perceived by people in many different ways, sometimes with prejudice from the past: a game for the rich people or old gentlemen, courses have been seen as a venue for business deals or an afternoon walk..., sport that is not from the most athletic ones. Many granted successful golfers have come in all different shapes and sizes, but golf can sculpt your body and keep you fit. In recent times the games hierarchy have become ‘gym bunnies’ and fitness is recognised as a vital

36

part in maximising their potential. The very nature and movement of the golf swing is dynamic and complex and requires many different fitness components. Whilst your average club golfer often doesn’t have the opportunity or desire to dedicate themselves to golf specific exercise, the fact that they’re completing 18 gruelling holes will without doubt have general health and fitness benefits. These include: Stability – The golf swing requires a solid base in which to launch from ‘You cannot fire a canon

from a canoe!’ By maintaining good posture during the golf swing you are creating ‘core stability’. This is the trendy term used in gyms and refers to how well you can stabilise your body whilst making a dynamic movement. Strength & Flexibility – The rotational twisting and turning movement in swinging a metal club calls on the body’s muscles and joints to work in harmony. A well performed golf swing can flatten tummies, increase the range of motion in shoulders and hips and even reduce or alleviate back problems.

Cardiovascular health – Depending on whether you’re straight as a dart or an army golfer (left right left right) will determine whether you walk between 4 to 6 miles over 18 holes of golf. Either way, carrying your golf bag over a varied and hilly topography / landscape you’ll no doubt give the heart and lungs a solid work out. Obvious benefits of such exercise are to lower cholesterol, speed up metabolism and lose weight. Stress Relief – Legendary golfer Bobby Jone s was famously quoted as saying ‘Golf is played mainly on a 5-inch course, the distance between your ears’. Indeed a major factor in the game is

the constant battle of mind control. Regardless of whether you can master this or not a golfer will at some point become completely absorbed in their own game through a strong concentration/ focus. This can often feel like a form of meditation taking you away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. In summary, whilst playing golf doesn’t have the same effect as training for a triathlon, it definitely has low impact health and fitness benefits which can be enjoyed as a social activity in the sunshine all year round

Alex Day’s passion for the game started at the age of 12 in his home town of Lichfield in the UK where he later went on to represent his county at all levels. In 2001 Alex joined the Professional team at The Belfry, and in 2005 successfully completed his PGA diploma achieving distinction grades in golf coaching and swing theory. Alex firmly believes in offering a holistic approach to his coaching. He has worked successfully with both tour professionals to complete novices through building specific programmes to suit ability and ambition. He joined Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club in 2010 and since then he has been running successfully the whole golf tuition at the club and the OGC Junior Programme.

THE CHEDI MUSCAT

What

Voya Organic Seaweed leaf Envelopment for Detoxification

WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT:

The treatment uses VOYA organic products that harness the therapeutic properties of the sea to help you cleanse, detox and relax your body. It incorporates the purest seaweed, hand harvested, to ensure that the highest content of bio-actives is preserved.

HOW IT’S DONE:

The treatment begins with a body and facial exfoliation of seaweed and spiny bamboo blended with seaweed oil. Next, the body is cocooned in whole seaweed leaves for toning and firming while special leaves are used on the face. Whilst the envelopment and face masque are processing, a conditioning hair masque is massaged into the scalp. After twenty minutes, the seaweed leaves are removed and the excess seaweed gel is massaged into the skin. The treatment concludes with the application of seaweed face cream, eye serum and body moisturiser.

Where

The Spa, The Chedi Muscat, Oman

OUR VERDICT:

We love everything about The Spa at The Chedi Muscat and even more so after this treatment. The star of this treatment is of course the seaweed which acts as a treasure chest of natural chemicals and beneficial ingredients. Seaweeds absorb their nourishment from the sea and have natural anti-ageing and anti-cellulite properties. They can improve suppleness and the elasticity of the skin and can stimulate the renewal of damaged skin cells. The Result: We left the spa with a detoxified, toned and naturally baby-smooth skin that glowed with the richness of the sea.

TIP:

According to the well-informed masseuse at the spa, to experience the lasting effects of the seaweed wrap, it is best not to take a shower immediately after. Wait a few hours, even if the smell of the seaweed puts you off.

GET THE GLOW Rika Rusnaeni, Spa Director – The Chedi Muscat, on tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing ... GOOD FOOD = GOOD SKIN

When we are talking about good skin, most of the time we only think about the product that we use on it from an external aspect. Working from the inside however is key. Food plays an important role for our skin, as is requires nutrients derived from inside the body in order to protect itself from damage and replenish dead skin cells with new healthy cells. Therefore what we eat, is detrimental to what our skin will look like.

HEALTHY DIET

It is good to have a balanced diet and eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals which will ensure that your skins glows with healthiness in the short and long term.

UV PROTECTION

If you love to spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, always carry Sun Block (Sun Cream) with you and apply regularly in order to avoid sun burns and skin damage. You should also carry with you a pair of sunglasses and a hat whilst it is hot, to protect your eyes and prevent a sun stroke.

EXERCISE

Some people say that ‘working out makes your skin break out’. This is absolutely not true. Exercise, in fact, helps release the toxins out of your skin, particularly if replenished with lots of water and it will of course give you a wonderful shape.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER

Drinking water will help you cleanse the body from toxins, moisturise the skin and improve the skin's elasticity.

RIGHT PRODUCTS

Every time a new skin care product is launched, we are so tempted to try it out. As individuals

we need to understand what our own particular skin needs are and that choosing the wrong product will damage the skin.

ENOUGH SLEEP

When we sleep, our skin is renewed and restored; this is when new skin cells are produced and replenished. Having enough sleep will improve your skin texture and tone.

STOP SMOKING

Smoking dehydrates the skin and reduces its elasticity. Someone who smokes has a larger risk of getting wrinkles, due to the lack of elasticity of the skin cells.

DAILY RITUAL

It is essential to look after your skin by refreshing and replenishing it it with a good daily routine. Take regular showers, followed by moisturising with a cream suitable for your own skin type. Cleanse, tone and moisturise your face daily (with a product that is suitable for your skin type). It is good also to treat your skin once in a month; have a nice facial, fabulous body polish and wrap.

CHILL OUT, RELAX, BE HAPPY, BE BEAUTIFUL

As hard as it is in this day and age, try and stay away from stress. Whatever you feel inside, will ultimately appear on the outside too. Stress can make the skin more sensitive as well as more reactive. In certain cases, stress can lead to psoriasis, which then creates acne on your skin. Do yourself and your body a favour and pamper yourself; do something that relaxes your body, mind, and spirit

CHI THE SPA

What

CHI Healing Stone Massage

What it’s all about: Inspired by the healing rituals of Lake Kokonar in Tibet, this ancient massage technique uses warm stones heated in oil and herbs to restore vitality. How it’s done: Every CHI ritual begins with a foot scrub and wash. Once that is done, the therapist starts out by combining the therapeutic effects of essential therapeutic oils with a massage. The therapist glides her fingers across your shoulders and

down your arms to your fingertips, and also strokes from your neck down your spine to the lower back. Next the therapist uses the heated stones to massage across your back and down your legs. Finally the therapist places various sizes of Himalayan stones on the chakra points of the body.

and provides deep relaxation. It is perfect for office goers who spend most of their days seated in front of the computer. It relieves a great amount of stress, helps with depression, and even reduces back pain. If you have never had a hot stone treatment before, than you definitely owe yourself the pleasure!

Our Verdict: The massage encourages balanced energy flow throughout the body, which helps to reduce any muscle pain, promote healing, releases stress,

TIP: This massage is highly recommended, especially if you have back and shoulder problems and can be done at least twice a month.

YIN & YANG BALANCE

Parudee Pattadirek, Director of Spa – CHI, the spa at Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa, on the concept of CHI, and massages…

On CHI – The Origin and Concept “At CHI The Spa, we draw inspiration from the book Lost Horizon, which is the origin of Shangri-La legend. Shangri-La is said to be a mythical utopian lamasery high in the mountains of Tibet. From the names of the treatment suites to the interior décor, everything is inspired by book and Tibet. Also in traditional Chinese philosophy, chi or qi is the universal life force that governs the well-being and personal vitality. Hence, all CHI massages and treatments are based on authentic natural healing methods found in traditional well-being practices shared by many Asian cultures.

When you look at our spa menu you will see that we have an array of Asian wellness massages. All the CHI spas across the world also have the ‘Sense of Place’ treatment rituals, which are specific to the country. Here in Oman, our Sense of Place menu uses local ingredients such as frankicense to create a special range of wraps, hammams and rasul. Our Signature treatments include the CHI Balance, the CHI Healing Stone (see review), the Philippine Hilot Massage among others. “Here at CHI, we use the Chinese theory of the Five Elements of metal, water, wood, fire andearth to harmoise the body’s positive yang and negative yin energy to restore balance and vitality. We check for your elements and suggest the oil based on the element you are.”

On massages for the body

“Each massage has diverse benefits because it uses different techniques. Swedish massage therapists use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil, while the Shiatsu (Japanese massage) is a form of bodywork that uses localised finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Like shiatsu, Thai massage aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points. Thai massage also includes

compressions and stretches. It is difficult to say which one is better, but all of them help relax muscles and relieve any muscular pain or stiffness. Massages also improve blood circulation and promote healthy sleep. Just like muscle and back pain, headaches can also be alleviated thanks to massage.”

On massages for the mind

“Aromatherapy massages use oils that are relaxing and energising. One of the most common essential oils used in aromatherapy massage is lavender. Massages are also known to soothe anxiety and depression. Massage reduces levels of the stress hormones, resulting in lifted spirits and often lower blood pressure. It also acts as an anti-depresseant, which are involved in depression."

TRY THIS

“For those who cannot have massages every day. Drink lots of warm water, it helps improve your blood circulation. For a good relaxing sleep, sprinkle drops of lavender oil on your pillow.”

Parudee Pattadirek recently joined as the spa director at Shangri-La and CHI, The Spa. She comes with a wealth of experience in spa management. Her early years were spent in her country Thailand with famous spa brands such as Mandara and Anantara. She moved on with to an overseas career with a stint at Anantara Spa in Kempinski Hotel, Dead Sea, Jordan and later in The Spa by Zara Home in Hilton Kuwait Resort. Prior to her post here, she was working with the Anantara Spa in Bilila Lodge Kempinski in Tanzania.

FOOD

THE GOOD SLEEP GUIDE

Has sleep been evading you? The key could lie in your dietary intake. Eating the right foods may help you fall asleep faster, say experts, and even improve the quality of your sleep. Of course, we do suggest that you consult your doctor before trying these out

TEA

Nothing relaxes like tea. Try a cup of hot camomile, catnip, anise or fennel tea. All contain natural ingredients which will help you sleep. Most health food stores will also have special blends of herb tea designed to soothe you and help you get to sleep. Green tea contains theanine, which helps promote sleep. Just be sure you get a decaf green tea if drinking it at bedtime.

ALMONDS

Almonds have known to be good for the heart. According to some experts, almonds and some types of nuts also have the 'zzz' factor. Almonds are a great source of tryptophan, which helps to relax and calm down. Besides, almonds contain magnesium, known for its excellent muscle relaxing properties

Try this: Have a tablespoon of almond butter or a 1-ounce portion of almonds to help your body relax.

42

Try this: Experts recommend trying a 1-cup serving of the hot stuff.

MISO SOUP

Miso contains amino acids that may boost the production of melatonin, a natural hormone that can help induce the yawns. Research shows that warm liquids also relieve cold symptoms, helping you sleep better when you're feeling under the weather.

Try this: Experts

recommend keeping a few 8-ounce packs of instant miso soup at home.

OATMEAL BANANAS

Bananas are an excellent source of magnesium and potassium, which help to relax overstressed muscles. They also contain tryptophan, which convert to serotonin and melatonin, the brain’s key calming hormones. It is no wonder they are called 'a sleeping pill in a peel'.

Try this:

Blend one banana with one cup of milk or soy milk (and ice, if desired). Pour and enjoy!

Nothing like a bowl of warm oatmeal to kick in the ‘zzz’ quotient! Oatmeal is warm, soft, soothing, easy to prepare, and nourishing. It's rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon and potassium - the who's who of nutrients known to support sleep.

Try this: Go easy on the

sweeteners; too much sugar before bed can have an anti-calming effect. Instead, consider topping your oatmeal bowl with fruit, like bananas.

FOOD

HARDCOOKED EGG

If you have trouble staying asleep at night, it may be because you didn’t eat a pre-bedtime snack high in protein, or perhaps your snack was too high in simple, high-sugar carbohydrates, like cake and candy. Hard-cooked eggs can help make you sleep easy and comfortably well because of the protein in them. Moreover, you get hours of uninterrupted sleep through the night.

Try this: If you don’t eat eggs then try cheese, nuts or any other other protein-rich snack.

CHERRIES

According to experts, cherries, particularly tart cherries, naturally boost the body's supply of melatonin, which helps people with insomnia. While research is going on how much juice or how many cherries are needed to get us to the Land of Nod, experts say sipping a glass of cherry juice before bedtime couldn't hurt.

Try this: Have a serving of fresh, frozen

or dried cherries if you don’t quite fancy juice. No added sugars please.

44

EDAMAME HONEY WARM MILK

You remember all those nights when your mother used to force-feed warm milk to you? It was for the very reason that you would fall asleep soon and stay asleep. Milk contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which turns to 5-HTP and releases relaxing serotonin. It’s also high in calcium, which promotes sleep.

Try this: In a large mug, stir together milk,

vanilla and little sugar (only the bare minimum). Heat in the microwave on full power for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Stir in some nutmeg powder, and serve hot.

Honey has been used as a popular sleep aid for thousands of years. An ancient Chinese proverb calls for ‘eating honey every night’, and European folk healers have recommended drinking a cup of warm milk with honey before bedtime since the Middle Ages. This tiny bit of glucose sends a message to your brain to turn off orexin, a neurotransmitter that has been linked to alertness.

Try this: Two teaspoons

of cider vinegar with two teaspoons of honey in a glass of warm water before bedtime or maybe some honey in a cup of warm chamomile tea.

Lightly salted edamame is your answer, especially if you're dealing with menopause-related symptoms. The natural estrogenlike compounds found in soybased products can be very beneficial in controlling those nighttime hot flashes that can disturb your sleep, say experts.

Try this: Blend together

2 cups of shelled, cooked edamame with 1tsp salt, a drizzle of olive oil and 1 clove garlic (optional) until smooth.

Change your plate from standard-sized dinner plate to a desert size plate for proper portion control. Remember the 50-25-25 rule Fill 50 per cent of your plate with low calorie, high nutritious veggies, 25 per cent whole grains/starch and 25 per cent protein (meat, beans). Eat regularly Jump start your metabolism first thing in the morning with a nutritious breakfast to help you burn more calories later on. If you wait too long to eat and you’ll only end up overindulging at your next meal. Try to eat every 3-4 hours for example 7.30am breakfast, 10.30am snack, 1pm lunch, 4pm snack and 7pm dinner. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a princess and dinner like a pauper Use this mantra for how much you should be eating throughout the day. You need more energy (from food calories) to fuel your activities in the morning and afternoon, by dinner time you should be keeping it on light. BEAUTY

NATURAL BOTOX! There’s a right royal buzz surrounding the Heaven skincare range and it’s not just because of the unusual ingredient it contains. Favoured by the Duchesses of Cornwall and Cambridge and amongst celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Heaven’s signature product, the Bee Venom Mask, claims to be an effective and natural alternative to botox. Rebecca Jones puts it to the test he application of bee venom, albeit as one of several ingredients in the face mask that everyone’s talking about, is said to stimulate the skin into producing its own collagen and elastin, mimicking the body’s natural reaction to a sting and in doing so, plumping up the skin and filling out those tedious fine lines and wrinkles.

T

Rather reluctantly I’ve started to admit that my frown and laughter lines need tender loving care beyond the limits of my daily beauty regime. With a natural preference towards organic based products, Heaven instantly ticks some of my boxes, but can it really deliver on its promises of the beauty holy grail, dewy skin with instant and youthful elasticity? I tracked down the range to The Nail Spa in Dubai and opted for the Heaven LIA Facial. It was reassuring to hear that the creator of the Heaven range, Deborah Mitchell had flown to Dubai and personally trained all the therapists at The Nail Spa for six days, but then it's not

48

suprising when you find out more about this inspirational woman. Deborah’s dedication to the production of organic and holistic cosmetics got her recognition as International Business Woman of the Year and the woman responsible for Kate Middleton’s glowing face at her wedding last year. Aware that the world’s press would be conducting a close examination in glossy magazines, Deborah’s confident approach has been rewarded with regular patronage at the royal residences. Lying on a heated bed in a soothing treatment room after a hectic day in Dubai, I already feel privileged as my therapist, Eldrina, applies the first of twelve stages in the extensive LIA facial. She begins with a light and elegant scent to relax the face and body. With unswerving conviction, Eldrina quietly talks through each stage, explaining the benefits from the Limited Edition Cleansing Milk compiled to balance hormone levels in the skin, to the Skin Polish exfoliator and mandarin scented Cleanse and Tone face wash, which also firms and initiates the production of collagen. With the early prep over, the stage is set for the anti-aging treatment

to begin. The first of the big guns in the battle against aging is the sublime LIA Therapy Organic Oil, an intensive night treatment that can be used on the face or body. Eldrina skilfully massaged this unctuous oil into my face and neck in preparation for the Bee Venom Mask. I admit, that it would be easy to get lulled into the sheer luxuriousness of these products, but from the moment the mask was applied, a little bit of bee magic happened and my skin cells started tingling, this continued until the mask was wiped away, twenty minutes later. The product had a deliciously, delicate scent of manuka honey and shea butter, but would it really live up to the hype and bring back some of my forgotten youth? Following on from the mask, an Orange Flower Cell Renewal treatment was applied, leaving my skin feeling clear and smooth while rejuvenating and healing the tissue. The Heaven Age Defiance cream is said to help reduce scar formation, rosacea and to seal moisture within the skin making it ideal as a make-up base. After the Bee Venom Mask, my favourite product was without doubt the Heavenly Eyes Regenerating Complex, a putty containing

Vitamin A, oxygen and moisture reservoir that was pressed firmly into my collection of fine lines and wrinkles. My skin was literally buzzing and my eyes were wide and sparkling, despite a hectic day in Dubai. As facials go, I can honestly say that this was one of the finest I have experienced in any five star spa, high praise indeed from an initial sceptic. It was clear that the multifunctional products in the Heaven range have been carefully developed to work in harmony with each other. Containing a wealth of organic ingredients aiding toning, firming, regenerating and also healing in natural ways, it was fabulous to find that they were all subtly scented and never cloying or overpowering in texture leaving plumped skin full of radiance. As for the claim of a natural alternative to botox, the effects of the Bee Venom Mask were clear from the first application on my skin and in the following couple of days, the skin continued to bloom and glow. Good thing then, that I’d brought a pot of the amber nectar back home with me For more information log on to www.thenailspa.com

Based on the concept of ‘total beauty’, this begins with the first step of the skin care routine and continues through to make-up, for complete, radiant beauty. Signature speaks to Edouard Mauvais-Jarvis, Scientific Communication Director – Christian Dior Skincare and Make Up, on the Capture Totale range... How would you say Capture Totale has evolved over the years? “In two years, One Essential has become a crucial element in global anti-ageing beauty care and daily skincare routine. Its creation forged a true break with skincare of the past thanks to its unique value proposition: to deeply detoxify the skin while boosting the active ingredients of any other skincare used in synergy. Today, in 2012, new proof of its skincare effectiveness, which in just six weeks, can repair the visible damage to the skin caused by a year of ageing, have cemented its global leadership.” The latest in the line is the Serum One Essential Mask, the first Dior "serum in a mask"? How did this product come about? How would you describe its properties? "The role of a mask is to allow for the application of an unequalled quantity of active ingredients on a short amount of time, by applying a thick layer of texture on the face and a specific formulation. The One Essential

What skin care routine would you recommend for 35 and above and why? “From the age of 35 some aging signs begin to appear, while the regeneration and repairing potential of the skin begins to decrease. So the skin begins to accumulate more and more damages that cripple the repair process, which makes it age even faster. That’s why my recommendation would be to combine the use of one essential , to boost the recycling of toxins with the use of a global anti-aging such as capture totale to relaunch the repair of damaged structures. Using only an anti aging without taking care of the toxins would be like trying to drive a car with the handbrake on : it would work, but in a weakened way. "The combination of One Essential + Capture Totale fully frees the regenerative and repair power of capure totale for a doubled effect.” How does one take care of his/her skin when travelling or on a holiday? “People travelling or on holiday have to face two main things : A jet lag, source of fatigue and inner stress for the skin A “climate lag”, source of external stress So these people may have to change the type of cream they use and also combine it with an intense detoxifying routine such as the One Essential Mask for example, and the One Essential serum and eye serum to avoid the marks of fatigue. “Above all this let’s not forget that the air conditioning and low pressure combined effects of airplane travels generate a lot of dryness that will require specific care with a nourishing texture. An application of the mask could also certainly be like “pushing a reset button” to clear up all the damaging influences of tiring and long trips.” What Dior skincare products would you recommend to people who are always on the go? “People who are always on the go are stressed and the more their organism gets stressed the more it produces oxidation and toxins that accumulate. For them the use of a serum such as One Essential is the key to counteracting the damaging effects of accumulated stress on their skin.” Are there any specific products in Dior Skin care that cater to Middle East? What kind of

Skincare routine would you recommend for men and Women in the Middle East? “People from the Middle East have a lot in common with South Asian skin types. "They have a Caucasian skin but yet highly pigmented. Middle east, like SE Asia is hot and exposed to UV exposure. So the main skin features appear, skin pigmentation unevenness, shininess, open pores. Middle East people look for ranges such as Diorsnow and light textures such as the Hydralife skin perfect. They need UV bases like the Diorsnow’s and skin pigmentation evenness control serums such as Diorsnow DNA control.” How would you say Capture Totale has evolved? What is the future of Capture Totale? “We truly believe that the future of Capture Totale is strongly bonded to our Stem Cell technology advances. Thanks to our unique Network of stem cell researchers around the world and specifically in Stanford Universtity we are able to keep a step ahead on the knowledge and understanding of the key role of Stem cells in the skin and along the process of aging. "We also believe that we will only be able to have a relevant approach on aging if we are able to correct the damages that accumulate in cells along time. This is why we will continue working on the Nobel prize awarded proteasome technology, allowing for an elimination and recycling of cellular toxins to fight against aging and trigger regeneration of skin structures. "We've only unveiled a small part of the power these technologies are about to deliver and our work in the years to come is to find the new ingredients that will be able to complement and reinforce the action on these key biological targets for an even more powerful action on aging for Capture Totale.” What is the secret of a beautiful, young skin? What should we do to preserve youthful skin? “Preserving a youthful skin is above all protecting it from aggressions, but as we all know that the universal flawless protection is an utopia considering the lifestyle most of people are forced to have, the best ally is to rely on our existing repair and regeneration systems to prolong our youthfulness. This is why with One essential and Eye essential we protect the regenerative power of stem cells and stimulate the natural toxin recycling system of cells to help repair the damages as they occur, without losing a second.”

NO SWEAT ‘No sweat’ is the mantra for gym wear. Today a lot of brands have come up with anti-sweat, dry fit track lowers, which are hip yet comfortable to wear for intensive workout sessions. However, I recommend hosiery tracks that are my all-time favourite. Shorts also are an ideal wear during leg workouts as well as to show off those newly acquired well-toned legs. TEE-CHNOLOGY Technology is fabulous when it comes to high performance garments in gym wear. Nike, Reebok and Adidas have a great collection of anti-sweat T-shirts that come in varied patterns and colours. Racer back well-fitting T-shirts with motivational quotes are in style now, inspiring you during the workout. Also look out for the fibre content in the labels. SOLE SEARCHING Shoes are an integral part of gym wear accessories, but that doesn’t mean you refrain from being trendy. Raise your shoe style quotient in gym by investing in blingy shoes in silver and gold from Nike, Adidas and D&G. Opt for well fitted, comfortable light shoes with a flexible sole. For running on the treadmill, spiked ones are great but for weight training choose the shock absorbent shoes that provide apt support to the heel. SOCK’ EM UP Cotton or hosiery socks from Nike or Reebok are a must to be able to breathe freely throughout the workout session. For women who are high on the style status, wear ankle length socks as they look trendy and are super comfortable. GRIP IT RIGHT Highly recommended is a good pair of hand gloves to get a good grip while working out. It will also protect your beautiful soft hands from getting those eeky corns. BAND-IT Keeping your hair in control is important while working out. Go for the cute and sporty look by sporting broad fancy head bands available in various designs and colours. It’s best to skip any jewellery in the gym- strictly no hoops, bracelets or anklets please. DON’T FORGET THE ACCESSORIES To carry all the stuff mentioned above, a nice sporty bag in vibrant colours is a must. Also, do remember to get yourself one of those trendy sippers. LES SOURCES DE CAUDALIE, FRANCE

The concept behind Les Sources de Caudalie is inspired by the ‘French Paradox’, discovered over 20 years ago. It refers to a study proving that the French diet and lifestyle, particularly in Southwest France, is conducive to good health. Between vineyards and forests, at only 20 minutes from Bordeaux center, the architect Yves Collet created from scratch contemporary buildings from recycled local materials in tune with the surroundings. A retreat for all of the senses, it blends unique vinotherapie treatments designed to slow the aging process with an idyllic locale among vineyards near Bordeaux. Rich in minerals, the property's warm underground spring water is great for soaking away what ails you. Wraps and massages use grape extracts called polyphenols, which strengthen blood vessels and enhance micro-circulation, while slimming programmes combine techniques that break down cellulite with special dietary menus and varietal treatments. You can choose from their extensive regular and seasonal packages. For more details log on to www.sources-caudalie.com

LOUBOUTIN MAGIC

ROSEMIN MANJI ON WHY CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN IS A GODSEND FOR THE WOMEN ACROSS THE WORLD…

T

here is something about Christian Louboutin that always brings a smile on my face. Perhaps it’s his warmth that resonates as he walks in a room or the charming French accent or the real reason is that this man has changed my life. I can't say that about too many people, but my life has never been the same after I bought my first pair of red soles 10 years ago. The shoe was called ‘No Prive’, a high heel with a hidden platform that gave me confidence that no one could ever give me, better posture, height and a silhouette that made my clothes drape perfectly on my body. Is it really possible that a pair of shoes could give me this massive transformation? The answer is ‘yes’. That is why I am among millions of women around the world that share this admiration for the Red Sole king. I have been lucky to travel with Christian all across the Middle East over the years, but last month was exceptional as he celebrated 20 years of his brand. I caught up with Christian over coffee and chatted about the red sole and what’s in store next for the brand….. You are always travelling? Don’t you ever want to be at home relaxing? “I love to travel and to meet people from other cultures. I am always so happy to visit new countries it inspires me. I really like people.” From your collection which shoe must every woman own? “Every woman should own a Pigalle pump, its simple and balanced and I have never seen anyone who it didn't look good in it.”

62

Favourite ready to wear designer? “Azzedine Alaia,he truly honours the body of a woman - to flatter and shape.” It’s been a very globe-trotting year for you? "This year has been exceptional as I am celebrating 20 years of my business. Each country we have done a different celebration such as a collaboration with Crazy House in Paris, an exhibition with British Design Museum in London and for the Middle East we are celebrating in Dubai with a shoe signing event, exhibition in Dubai Mall and circus theme party. It’s been a busy week in Dubai but I am enjoying being here.” You have visited Dubai many a times…what are your favourite spots? “Royal Mirage hotel is very comfortable and has good service. As far as restaurants go, I like trying new places. I like Hakasaan, but somehow I always end up going to Zuma and Le Petit Maison on each trip out to Dubai.” Do share the secret of the red sole with us “There is no secret…. The colour just happened while using my assistant’s nail polish under the sole, but red evokes a spark, happiness, excitement and passion. It’s a good colour.” What’s new in the World of Louboutin? “I am excited to have finally opened my first men’s store in Paris. Also the coffee table book was to commemorate my 20 years in a book format. I keep saying 20 years but it doesn’t feel so long I feel like it’s just the beginning of a story.”

CELEBRITY

She's The One!

STARTLINGLY BEAUTIFUL, DEVASTATINGLY FEMININE, CAMERON DIAZ IS EVERY MAN’S DREAM COME TRUE AND EVERY WOMAN’S WOMAN!

64

he will turn 40 in August, but the lissome lass who set our hearts racing and made The Mask’s heart pop out does not intend to allow age to get in the way of life. Cameron Diaz was recently quoted as saying, “I`m so, so excited about turning 40. When I was in my twenties, I couldn`t wait to get to my thirties. Now at the end of my thirties, I`m so looking forward to my forties. I love getting older.”

S

We can understand why! She looks smokin' hot! She loves to work out and feels that it is important to "take care of your body not just for today, but for the rest of your life if you want to feel that energy even when you are 60." Anything but 60, or even 30, Cameron is as youthful as she was when photographer Jeff Dunas discovered her. Cameron was 16 then. Within days she got herself a contract with Elite and shortly thereafter began working for clients such as CocaCola and Nivea. “She has an energy, an electricity in her face, a sparkle that is unmistakable,” Dunas was quoted as saying about his muse. Today, Cameron’s popularity is such that it needs no real introduction and we suspect it has a PR agent of its own. For we all know, There's Something About Cameron! In 2010,

CELEBRITY

Cameron Diaz's accessory of choice: TAG Lady Link timepiece

Forbes Magazine ranked Cameron as the richest Hispanic female celebrity, ranking number 60 among the wealthiest 100. She was also listed among CEOWORLD magazine's Top Accomplished Women Entertainers. With innumerable films and endorsements under her belt, Cameron’s latest conquest is the timekeeping business. She recently inked a sweet three-year deal to be the brand ambassador and muse for TAG

66

Heuer’s Link lady collection, which is dedicated to beautiful and rebellious women around the world. Startlingly beautiful and devastatingly feminine, Cameron is also an avid sportswoman, making her the consummate TAG Heuer ambassador. The new look and feel of TAG Heuer’s latest ladies’ collection reflects Cameron’s personal style: “I want a watch that is more than just a timepiece, it should be

like my favourite piece of jewellery,” she says. “The new Link Lady is modern yet timeless, sexy and elegant and I’m equally comfortable wearing it on the red carpet or in my day-to-day life.” The glossy new jewelled Link Lady is seductively curvy and sophisticated, yet faithful to the iconic Link design and TAG Heuer savoir-faire. It’s not just about sporting an exquisite piece of bling, Cameron will also serve to benefit and raise awareness for programmes that empower women,

including the UN Women campaign. “I am deeply appreciative that TAG shares my desire to support women who are not free to pursue even the most basic goals, simply because of their gender,” she says. All said and done, Cameron doesn’t play it safe and she is more than just blonde and sexy! We present to you an interview with the beautiful bombshell on her association with TAG and more..

It is rare for you to enter an endorsement agreement of this kind. How did you choose TAG Heuer? “Throughout my career, I have been very selective about aligning myself with brands. I love the fact that TAG Heuer challenges the rules and thinks outside the box and I’m honored to be associated with such an iconic and forward-thinking brand. I have been a fan of the TAG Heuer brand for many years.

“I also appreciate TAG’s social responsibility and it was an important factor in my decision to align myself with them for this campaign. It is very important that companies and individuals strive to make our world a better place and I’m happy to be involved with a company that understands that.” What do you think of TAG Heuer’s New Link Lady? Watches are sometimes more masculine. What makes the Link Lady

CELEBRITY more feminine to you? Why does it appeal to women? “The design of the Link Lady is different from the motor racing-inspired pieces that are so closely associated with the TAG brand. Yet, it is true to the soul of the brand, with the iconic S-shaped link of the bracelet. It is so elegant and comfortable. I love it.” “Also, the Link Lady is more than just a smaller version of a man’s watch. It is true to the TAG Heuer line, but distinctly feminine at the same time. There are as many variations on the women’s watches as there are types of women. I consider mine one of my favourite pieces of jewellery, much more than just a timepiece. My Link Lady is at home on the red carpet as in my day-to-day life.” What has been your biggest challenge in life and what will be your next one? “I don’t think about challenges, I consider them opportunities to learn and grow. I consider having the career I have a great gift and I try to never lose sight of how fortunate I am to be able to do what I do. I look forward to finding new and different ways to express myself creatively and to share what I’ve learned with others.” How would you describe your personal style? Is it sporty, stylish, avant-garde or more elegant? “I’m usually dressed down in my off time, but whether I’m casual or dressed up, I have to feel comfortable and confident in whatever I ‘m wearing.” How do you decide on what accessories to wear? “Less is definitely more for me. I feel that accessories should complement what you are wearing and not overpower the outfit. That is what I love about the Link Lady, it is elegant and understated. “

QUICK TAKES What do you look for in a timepiece? “A watch says a lot about the person who wears it. I think the Link Lady is for the confident, elegant, modern woman who sees her watch as a piece of her favorite jewellery.” Your life philosophy Always be grateful Luxury is… Anything that makes you feel good. To me, luxury is about quality, not extravagance. Luxury you cannot live without… The luxury of time. When I am not working, I love the feeling of not rushing around.

DESIGN

PUSHING CREATIVE BOUNDARIES André C. Meyerhans delves into the viability of cross-disciplinary designs

70

he hotter period of the year is here. Many organisers scheduled their last events, just before the region estivates, and the pulse of the cities drops drastically. I also participated in such a pre-summer event: A solo exhibition on my work which showcased architectural and furniture designs as well as art and jewellery. The wide range of exhibits led to discussions whether cross-disciplinary activities are viable in the market today or simply a fortuitous niche created by the designer.

T

optimise structures according to mechanisms and principles found by biologists in nature which is labelled under bio-engineering. There is no exception when it comes to creative fields and design; it is the cross-disciplinary endeavors that set new horizons.

The time of the universal genius like Leonardo Da Vinci is over, for sure. However, focussed specialists with a tunnelled view proved to be inadequate as well. It is the lateral thinking and working that brings new insights: many theoretical physicists – like Stephen Hawking – see their trade merging with philosophy and religion when pushing the boundaries. Economists find the traditional frameworks explaining the market insufficiently and team up with psychologists to find new formulas, the so-called behavioural economics. And engineers

Working across professions has also different benefits: it allows isolating individual parameters, transferring them into a media more appropriate for further investigation and developing it there to the next level. Either the parameter can be reintegrated into its original context or insights gained in the parameter research may inspire ideas in other fields. Personally, I like to examine a single parameter. It supports focus and abstraction. Most of my artworks are actually off-springs of some architectural parameter studies. The jewellery

One needs to explore outside the box in order to get new insights. New ideas do not arise with repetition and by mingling with people who have the same knowledge. Cross-disciplinary activities are not only viable but essential in today’s world! They are source to new ideas and new approaches. There is no exception in the creative fields.

line showcased at my exhibition roots in a principle which originated in architecture and has been further developed in various artworks. Insights gained in the different fields will find their way back into architecture, closing the self-inspired circle. It is a reciprocal stimulation between the trades. Many of the contemporary designers and artists deliberately work across borders knowing of the potential that can be unleashed. For example, signature architect Zaha Hadid, she developed her architecture in inspiring paintings which show similarities with the Russian avant-garde of the early twentieth century. Her artwork was initially much more thought after than her architecture. Many critiques believe that it was the drawing style that greatly influenced her early deconstructivistic forms. Similarly, her bio-engineered, organic shapes materialized initially in furniture rather than in architecture. Now the world-famous architect engages in all trades and commissions include vases, crockery, tables and shoes! Another well-known, designer originating from the region and who successfully works crossdisciplinarily is Karim Rashid. He entered the

domain of interior architecture from industrial design. In his case, however, I would be more careful in seeing some lateral stimulation. He rather manages to apply a codex of shapes and color schemes to various objects and trades. While this attitude might marginally result in gaining new insights and ideas, it certainly contributes to developing a strong brand identity. Generally, it can be said that cross-disciplinary activities are especially fruitful if started from an abstract point. It is because this approach ensures that a thought can be exposed to the specifics of the discipline without limitations. Transfers on a formalistic level, on the other hand, often lack the depth as restrictions in application in the new media may limit investigations. Any cross-disciplinary activity requires that a person is flexible enough to enter another domain. Which domain one “cross”-enters or “cross”-tries, however, has often to do with opportunities, maybe destiny; pursuing and continuing the cross-disciplinary activity is related to persistence and commitment. So maybe, it is actually flexibility, eagerness to explore and dedication that we should look for, and lateral innovation is only the result

André C. Meyerhans is a Swiss architect who lives and works in Dubai, UAE. His creations range from 250’000m2-urban plans and onebillion-US-dollar mixed use developments to furniture-like objects, art and jewellery. André has also written for various trade magazines and held lectures in numerous institutions on architecture and design. He is also a regular guest critique at the Architectural Department of the American University in Sharjah. For more details you can visit www.acmeyerhans.com

THE THINKING MAN’S CAR 72

WHY WE LOVE THE 2012 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT V8 …

STYLE As a coupe with pleasant proportions it represents the best of the best, all but guaranteeing that its owners will never suffer the indignity of being shown up at the valet stand!

series. The high-technology V8 also features high pressure direct injection, low friction bearings, thermal management, energy recuperation via the charging system, and innovative turbo charger packaging for greater efficiency.

HERITAGE Since the launch of the original GT in 2003, the W12-engined Continental range has gone from strength to strength with over 50,000 sales worldwide, making Bentley's factory in Crewe, England, the largest producer of 12-cylinder engines in the world. The W12 story continues to unfold and remains the ultimate expression of Bentley's engineering strength. With the new 4.0 litre V8 engine Bentley had widened the appeal of the latest generation of Continentals.

LUXURY & COMFORT DETAILING Carries four adult passengers in a luxuriously appointed cabin which itself is a wonderful mix of craftsmanship, bespoke appointments and modern conveniences. Contoured leather-bound seats now provide even greater support and rear leg-room. Signature cues inside the cabin include an Eliade cloth headlining, new contemporary Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus veneers, optional two-tone leather colour splits. Even there’s a generous boot too!

DESIGN New superforming technology has helped create a beautifully sculptured new body which gives the coupe an even crisper and more defined appearance. Favourite details include the black grille, red background enamel badges, redesigned front valance, exhaust tips and large 21in wheels.

INFOTAINMENT A sweeping dashboard is even more stylish. The new touchscreen infotainment system features state-of-the-art navigation, Google Maps and entertainment while the latest Balanced Mode Radiator speaker technology and Dirac Dimensions™ digital sound processing deliver enhanced audio quality.

ENGINEERING New 4.0L V8 engine is a first engine in this model

PERFORMANCE & HANDLING Besides 500hp on tap, the instantly recognisable

growl of the new 4.0L V8 engine sets it apart from its Bentley stablemates. Since the car is lighter than its W12 sibling, it handles better. The V8’s all-wheel drive system employing an advanced Torsen differential and a 40:60 rear biased power split ensures safe yet dynamic sports car handling in all road conditions. GREEN CREDENTIALS The new V8 Continental model fulfils Bentley's environmental commitment to produce a new powertrain that delivers a 40 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. DRIVING RANGE EXTENDED The new V8 Continental models achieve outstanding levels of fuel efficiency for the luxury performance sector and are capable of travelling over 800km on a single tank of fuel. THE USP It is said to cost around 10 per cent less than its 12-cylinder counterpart. The idea that the V8 Continental GT is exclusive beyond anything but the depth of your pockets is almost laughable now – but make no mistake this is the ‘Thinking Man's’ Continental now

SIZE DOES MATTER Following the success of the company’s Q5 and Q7 SUV models, which made up 30 per cent of total Middle East sales in the first four months of 2012, Audi has decided to bring their new compact SUV, the Q3, to the market as well. The company is placing high hopes on its first SUV in the compact segment and with good reason. It is a truly impressive vehicle in proper Audi style. Here are ten reasons that will make it a sure-fire hit in the market. IT HAS STYLE

The Q3 has a distinctive road stance that makes it immediately recognisable as the youngest member of the Audi family. The coupe-like lines are an expression of its sporty character. The low roof line, which begins dropping rather early, and the very flat D-pillars underscore its dynamics. Sharp edges frame elegantly arched sheet metal surfaces, and distinctive lights accentuate the front and rear. Furthermore, the stylish wedge-shaped xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and the LED tail lights come as a standard in the Middle East. IT HAS PERFORMANCE AND FLEXIBILITY TO MATCH

The Q3 is being launched with two fourcylinder 2.0 TFSI engines, which combine direct injection with turbocharging and energy recovery system. With power outputs of 170hp and 211 hp respectively, these engines are as efficient as they are powerful. For the 170hp and 74

211hp version respectively, the engines deliver a constant 280Nm and 300Nm of torque and accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.8 and 6.9 seconds on their way to a top speed of 212 and 230km/h. Audi combines both engines with a fast-shifting dual-clutch seven-speed S-tronic transmission. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard out here. And best of all, the fuel consumption is just 7.7L per 100km on average. Audi engineers precisely matched the resonant frequencies of the body and those of the addon and internal components to give the Q3 its excellent acoustic features and quiet interiors when driving. IT CARES FOR THE SAFETY OF ITS PASSENGERS

In addition to numerous safety features in the construction of the vehicle itself, the compact premium SUV comes standard with two front airbags, thorax-pelvis side airbags in the backs of the front seats and curtain head airbags. Pyrotechnic belt tensioners up front, belt force limiters and the integral Audi head restraint system, which mitigates the consequences of a rear-impact collision, round out the package. Side airbags in the rear are optionally available later on. Isofix child seat anchor points in the rear and front passenger seat including deactivatable airbag are standard. Sensors monitor whether the rear safety belts are fastened. Earlier this year the Q3 received five stars – the highest possible score – for

passive crash safety by the European consumer protection initiative Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). IT ALSO CARES FOR PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

It is also state of the art when it comes to pedestrian protection. The front bumper and the cross-member behind it, the energyabsorbing foam between the two components and the aluminium bonnet make for an effective package. Low-speed collisions – the standard insurance category crash and the bumper crash, both of which are important for determining the comprehensive insurance category – result in no major damage. YOU CAN FREELY EXPRESS YOURSELF

Evidence of the premium character of the Audi Q3 can be seen in every last detail in the interior – in the selection of the materials, in their processing and in the tight, even gaps. A wide variety of materials and colours for the interior offers customers countless possibilities for expressing their own personal style. The wraparound, a large arc extending from one front door to the other, is a design feature borrowed from the large Audi model series. The split bottom spoke of the three-spoke sport steering wheel is an eye-catching and exclusive feature of the Q model family. IT IS FEATURE PACKED

in technology and equipment. For starters, it comes with a generously long list of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, the concert audio system as well as ISOFIX child seat mounting. Audi also offers a choice of optional equipment taken directly from the luxury class, including the adaptive light system, the high-beam assistant, the panoramic glass roof and the comfort key. For the Middle East, the standard settings also include heat insulating glass and a deluxe automatic air conditioning that considers the position of the sun and humidity. The park assist system manoeuvres the vehicle into tight parking spots almost autonomously; Audi side assist employs radar to help change lanes. Audi also offers a comprehensive range of infotainment components. Topping the range of options is the hard-drive navigation system MMI navigation plus, which displays high-resolution 3D graphics on a fold-out 7.0-inch colour monitor. The Bose surround sound system delivers 465watts of power to 14 speakers. Coming soon is the Bluetooth online car phone paired with a WLAN hotspot to provide the Q3 with Internet connectivity. THE LED INTERIOR LIGHTING PACKAGE

Another exclusive solution in this segment is the LED interior lighting package – a technology that bathes the interior in dramatic light. Efficient white light-emitting diodes provide the

cabin and reading lights. They illuminate the doors, the headlining, the foot wells, the vanity mirrors, the storage compartments and the air vent thumb wheels. LED light guides even accentuate the cup holders. With the Bose surround sound system, the frames of the woofer/mid-range speakers in the front doors form elegant rings of white light. IT IS COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT AND AERODYNAMIC

Audi is a leader in lightweight aluminium motor car construction and this trend is also reflected in the compact SUV which is 4.39m long, 1.83m wide and 1.59m high. The base version of the Q3 weighs just 1,630kg. Meanwhile, the car’s bonnet and the wrap-around tailgate are made of aluminium and weigh just 8.8 and 10.8kg, respectively – nearly 50 per cent less than equivalent in steel. The low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.32Cd also ensures a quieter ride. IT IS SPACIOUS

The Audi Q3 offers ample room for all five passengers. Despite the sloping, coupe-like roof line, even tall passengers enjoy sufficient headroom in the back, and there is also ample room for feet, knees, shoulders and elbows. Getting in and out of the vehicle is easy thanks to the raised seating position and convenient hip points.

IT IS ALSO PRACTICAL

The Q3 offers plenty of storage at all of the seats. The console of the centre tunnel is home to two cup holders, a 12-volt outlet and a storage bin. There are large pockets in the doors capable of holding 1.5L bottles, and there is a small, fold-out compartment to the left of the steering wheel. The optional storage package offers even more convenience. It includes fold-down compartments under the front seats, storage nets on the front seat backs, a multi-purpose retaining hook in the passenger foot well and a locking glove box. The luggage compartment of the compact SUV has a capacity of 460L, which can be increased to 1,365L. Many useful options make the Q3 even more versatile and convenient in everyday use. This includes a pass-through hatch, a reversible cargo floor with a tub on the reverse side, a reversible mat and a cargo area package that includes a luggage net, a sidemounted net, a 12-volt outlet and a second light. The standard roof rail can be fitted with a wide range of racks for bikes, skis, kayaks and other sports equipment from the Audi accessories programme

ART

DIGITAL CANVAS

CONTEMPORARY MIXED MEDIA ARTIST JOSEPH KLIBANSKY TALKS TO DEEPA RAJAN ON ART, ARTISTS AND HIS ENCOUNTER WITH ARMIN VAN BUUREN What do Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, Damien Hirst and a young Dutch new media artist by the name of Joseph Klibansky have in common? They are all artists who have pushed the artistic envelope thorough their craft, and they have all designed CD covers for famous musicians. Joseph Klibansky caught our attention because of the futuristic cover he designed for one of the most popular DJs on the music scene, Armin van Buuren. Klibansky even set a world record when his artwork for the CD cover was sold for nearly 34,350 euros at a modern and contemporary art auction at Sotheby’s. Never before has an artist of his age has commanded such a high price. At 31, Klibansky’s work has often been described as ‘art with stopping power’. Klibansky’s points of departure are architecture and the city, particularly the accelerated, compressed and densely populated urban environments of the 21st Century. Born in 1984 in Cape Town, Klibansky grew up in a creative and internationally-oriented

environment. In his teens, he became fascinated by the possibilities offered by computer art and digital imagery. He started to merge hundreds of images into powerful compositions, enhanced by computer artwork and often combined with a variety of painting techniques. The young artist soon developed his own distinctive style, which fascinates art galleries and collectors the world over: innovative creations in bright colours. Klibansky graduated at a Dutch business school, but soon decided to follow his great passion: art. He is one of the youngest professional artists in the contemporary international art scene. Inspired by such topics as city’s, fashion, design, modern architecture, and music, he is constantly bubbling with ideas for new works of art. Or, as he puts it, “It is my life. When I am not sleeping, I am thinking about art!” Signature spoke to Kilbansky about his art… How and when did you begin your journey as an artist? “I actually was very interested in art and photography from a young age. My parents

are true art lovers and my father practiced professional photography. This constant contact with creativity sparked a desire to create and I started to experiment with digital imagery. When I showed my work to people around me, I received immense support and my confidence as an artist grew very rapidly. I had my first solo show at the age of 23 and have been fortunate to enjoy a rapid rise since.” You are a contemporary mixed media artist? What according to you is contemporary mixed media? “Contemporary Mixed media is pretty selfexplanatory; I use different materials and techniques to create my works of art. My main tools are a powerful digital camera and my apple computer; you could see these devices as my brush and pallet. I think that for an artist of my generation, using these tools are very important, each generation gets a chance to do something new and I think this digital age is a very exciting one for an artist like me. I do, however, combine these high-tech techniques with traditional painting and printing to get to the intense colouring and feeling of my work.” What is your art inspired by? “For the past 5 years I have been working on a theme I call “New Urban Wonderland”, in this series I create partly surrealistic landscapes where the underlying energy of a changing culture plays the main character. Occasionally I use animals to play the part of the human being to create a more abstract view of our society. Somehow there is always a glimpse of the future in my work. "In my more recent works I have addressed the absence of nature in large western cities by creating lush scenes of New York filled with plants, flowers, animals and birds. When you view these artworks one really gets the sense that a perfect balance between the high pace city life and the slow motion of nature has been found.”

How does an artwork come to life and what is your creative process? “I always start with a concept, a story I want to tell about our society. When I have worked out in paper what kind of elements I need for the artwork, I plan a trip to make my photos. For a typical artwork I will use between 400 and 900 different photos. After I have all my material I select only parts of each picture and cut out this element. It is actually a very large and detailed collage that takes several months to make. “When the artwork is created on the computer I will make about 10 test prints in my printing lab to the point I am satisfied with the color balances and intensity of the work. Finally I print the work on a 350gms archival quality cotton paper and mount it in aluminum. “When the print is mounted I start the painting process, I ad acrylic paint and pigment inks to complete my vision. The last step is to coat the entire artwork in a thick layer of transparent resin I call Liquid-Glass. As you can hear it is a very delicate and specialised process.” You recently designed the CD sleeve for Armin van Buuren? How did that come about? "My collaboration with Armin is a very special one in many ways. I came in contact with him via his record label Armada Music (one of the owners is a large collector of my work, and a part of the art collection is housed in their HQ in Amsterdam). I got a phone call out the blue from Armin van Buuren asking me if I would like to create a cover for his new album. Obviously I was very excited about this project and my creative juices started flowing. "What I like about creating an album cover is that it reaches a very large and diverse audience, it is a stage to connect with millions of people around the globe like a large exhibition in a way. What is also great is that many big visual artists in the past have created an album cover for a recording artist like Takashi Murakami for Kanye West and Damien Hirst for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers."

Your work of art went under the hammer for a huge amount? What do you think made it so valuable to be sold as a work of art? “I think these things always happen for a good reason. Although I am still young I have been working as a professional artist for many years. In these years my work has been exhibited and collected all over the globe by private collectors and corporate institutions. My work selling at auction for a substantial amount to me is a token of trust that collectors think I will have a very long and successful career.” How does it raise the bar for you as an artist? “For me the price doesn’t raise the bar at all, I am always passionately working on new projects and my attention to detail has always been extremely high. What is the most exciting to me is that I really feel myself maturing as an artist, this drives my ambitions to work on a more monumental scale.” As a contemporary artist, where do you see the art scene in the next five years? The art scene is driven by a very strong group of extremely passionate people. Once you are bitten by the art bug of collecting, your life will never be the same. This passion, in combination with the high return on investment art can bring, will always attract new wealth. I, however, think art will be bought online more and more as the galleries figure out how to enhance the online collecting experience. It’s an exciting time ahead for this evolution. I also think that the market for photography and its acceptance as an art form will keep growing at a rapid pace. Will a Jackson Pollock still command the price it does today or do you see a paradigm shift in the way people will view art? “In my opinion these kinds of works will

command high prices for years to come. The reason is that every generation has its art stars, the popularity of the artist get carried over for a couple of generations and then the most support dies off. What I do experience first-hand is that newer work created in this digital era is rapidly gaining momentum; it’s just a lot of fun to collect and has an important place in today’s popular culture. “The generation-Y (born after 1980) has an even stronger affection with photography and digital imagery; I would expect this generation to have a stronger interest in New Media Art then in a Jackson Pollock.”

If you had to pick an artist each from mediums of art… “My personal choice would be the sculptor Anish Kapoor because his works give me a very tranquil feeling. The perfection of craftsmanship is also absolutely sublime. Because the surfaces of his sculptures are so smooth and perfect, you tend to forget that you are looking at a material and one is only left with their feelings and emotions. Like music in a certain way. I have to also add the young artist KAWS to my personal ‘want’ list. For me KAWS really translates the popular MTV-like culture and graphics into very exciting colorful narratives, his use of color is also very sophisticated. If you were allowed a 140 character ‘tweet’ to say something about you and your art, what would you say? “I try to create portraits of our rapidly changing culture combined with a possible glimpse of the future. If a viewer of my work feels this energy it is the ultimate form of gratification for me.”
