Christoper Chong’s three intoxicating variations of Oud are personal interpretations that pay tribute to one of the most prized ingredients in the world. The fragrances engulf the room with warmth and have been designed to remove impurities, expel negative energy, relieve anxiety and invoke a sense of strength and peace to create the ultimate in home luxury. URBAN CHIC
Inspired by a historical Piaget model from the early 1960s – equipped at the time with Piaget Calibre 12P – the new Limelight City is a contemporary expression of an original historical design. A shape inside a shape, an oval within a cushion-type case forming a structured timepiece expressing a resolutely active urban nature, this model strikes the perfect balance between tradition and modernity, strength and gentleness, powerful architecture and gentle shapes, subtle geometry and perfect curves. Available in white or pink gold versions, it features an elegant silvercoloured dial enhanced by tapering gold hour-markers set with diamonds. For more details contact Khimji’s Watches. HYPNOTIC INDEED!
From Christian Dior comes a new variation on Hypnotic Poison called Hypnotic Poison: Eau Sensuelle. It has been created by perfumer François Demachy who took inspiration from a novel orchid for perfumery lending itself to a reinterpretation of the 1998 original by Annick Menardo. The first edition of Hypnotic Poison is built around sensual and lush aromas of Sambac jasmine, sweet heliotrope, bitter almond, cumin, as well as the fascinating and very special vanilla. The nectar comes in a completely new transparent ruby red glass flacon which stands for a light and sophisticated beauty. It is almost magical in its powers, just like the face of its ad campaign which is no other than Monica Bellucci. The Dior range of products are available at Capital Store, Qurum.
THE MOON EFFECT
A. Lange & Söhne’s new 1815 Moonphase surpasses all boundaries, mirroring the brand’s drive to push the limits. The deviation of the moon phase is almost undetectable since the indication needs only to be corrected by one day after over 30 generations, or once every 1058 years, provided the watch runs without interruption and remains set to the correct time. This is an incredible feat, even for the master watchmakers at A. Lange & Söhne, who realise the significance of the lunar calendar across the globe, and specifically in the Middle East with reference to the holy month of Ramadan. The 1815 Moonphase is part of a trilogy of watches referred to as the “165 Years – Homage to F. A. Lange” collection, which also includes the Tourbograph “Pour Le Mérite” and the Lange 1 Tourbillon.
BEAUTY IN CONTRASTS
Paying tribute to Coco Chanel’s unique vision, Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, has created a makeup collection for Fall 2010 that brings bold emphasis to the eyes, and keeps lips soft and delicate. The Chanel ‘Les Contrastes’ collection is also inspired by the famous Chanel blush Joues Contrastes. Like Les Pop-Up De Chanel Makeup Collection for Summer 2010, the Fall 2010 makeup collection, is all about boldness, masculinity and femininity. The collection includes products in pink, purple and grey shades for lips, nails, cheeks and eyes.
LUXURY ON WHEELS The flagship SUV of the Infiniti range, the all-new 2011 QX, was unveiled in the Sultanate by Suhail Bahwan Automobiles recently. The QX epitomises the highest level of luxury, not just for the driver and front seat passenger, but all occupants as it offers each one of them personalised control of their environments. Add to it an exceptional driving experience provided by a powerful yet efficient V8 engine design, Hydraulic Body Motion Control system and intuitive functionality, which anticipates and responds to the users’ needs and desires and the picture is complete. The vehicle comes in either ‘Excellence’ or ‘Luxury’ grade with each grade having the option of either seven seats or eight seats.
SUPER PERFORMANCE The wait is finally over! Subaru’s Super Performance Series of cars have arrived in Oman. These perfomance-oriented set of wheels – STI, WRX, Legacy GT Turbo and XV – are available at great prices with great offers this season. Featured here is the Legacy GT Turbo which sports a 2.5l turbocharged Boxer engine and has been designed to deliver superb car handling giving confidence to drivers with enhanced safety and economy. To put it simply, Legacy is the complete package that combines safety, power, comfort, space, and style to give you the ‘Ultimate Driving Experience.’ The OTE Group is the exclusive distributor for Subaru range of vehicles in Oman.
TORQUE POWER
There’s nothing quite like it. What are we talking about? The new Hyundai Santa Fe of course! The new more powerful vehicle now comes with a V6 3.5L engine that delivers 280bhp and a 6 speed automatic transmission. Adding new dimensions to lifestyle SUVs with off road capabilities, it offers a lot more - it is more powerful, more up-market, gives better driving comfort, and has more luxurious and friendly ergonomics. Not to mention, spacious interiors that offer more room and comfortable 7 seats. The electronic ‘torque on demand’ 4WD system uses sensors to monitor road and driving conditions. Be it driving to work, exploring the outdoors, getting away with friends or picnic with family, the new Santa Fe packs in quite a punch! The OTE Group is the exclusive dealer for Hyundai range of vehicles in Oman.

Rolling Wonder The BMW M Bike is spectacular combination of state-of-the-art technology and exclusive design. Here’s why…
BMW’s own M division – usually known for their high-revving, high-performance automobiles – has come up with a non-motorised bike. (And you thought BMW did only cars and motorbikes, did you?) Called, simply enough, the BMW M Bike, is actually the latest product of the company’s occasional efforts in the realm of performance bicycles, a tradition that dates back to the ‘50s. A spectacular combination of state-of-the-art technology and exclusive design, this ‘rolling wonder’ features disc brakes and an elegant matt anthracite frame with the M logo that combine perfectly with the leather saddle, stunning rims and handles, and shiny red seat inlay. Characteristic of the entire M collection, which, like the BMW M model itself, stands for the extraordinary and unique. The bike’s fi’zi:k saddle is made from the highest quality leather with a red inlay. This ensures extra riding comfort and superior grip. The built-in Shimano SLX gear system is light and sturdy. The Manitou Match suspension fork on the front wheel is incredibly durable and the disc brakes make for a clean stop. The bike is available in special limited edition at select BMW dealers and online at www.bmw-shop.com. You must admit there’s nothing better than exploring your surroundings on a two-wheeler that is not just a high-end toy, but is also an ideal medium to reduce those carbon footprints. So, what are you waiting for? Put on your biking gear, get on to your super classy M bike and set out on the roads humming Freddie Mercury’s “I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle; I want to ride my bicycle; I want to ride my bike; I want to ride my bicycle; I want to ride it where I like...; I don’t believe in Peter Pan, Frankenstein or Superman; All I wanna do is bicycle, bicycle, bicycle...”

FRONT RUNNER
When Music Speaks RANA ALAWNEH MEETS LUTIST NASEER SHAMMA AND COMES BACK MESMERISED. AFTER ALL, HE IS NO ORDINARY ARTISTE...
H
is music will take you beyond worldly places, to where melodies reign supreme. For Iraqi lutist Naseer Shamma, music, be it Arabian or Western, is a means of exploring both the ethereal world, as well as the more practical one. Shamma is a force to be reckoned in the world of Arabian Oud players. He always explores the potential of his instrument and entices listeners from all walks of life with his melodious tunes. Thousands of fans throng
18
to his concerts and lose themselves in his therapeutic music. His concerts are normally held at the end of a workshop jointly organised by Oud Hobbyists Association, Oman and Arab Oud House, Cairo at a lecture hall in Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). He, along with some Omani lutists, steals the show every time. I recently went to such a concert, where I had the honour of meeting the man himself. Shamma is certainly not an ordinary Oud player. He does not merely move his fingers along the strings; no, this is different. He continually strives to improve as a lutist by learning and integrating new practices into his art. He says: “Every year I have to change my skin (so to speak). Every day I revive myself
FRONT RUNNER
and I am always concerned about exploring something new. Even when I am doing something new, I am thinking about the next new thing to do. “ Shamma was introduced to music when he was very small. He was taught to read Oud when he was just 11 and then joined the Institute of Musical Studies in Baghdad. The opportunity to entertain a wider audience came through playwright Hani Snober, head of the Jerash Festival (known today as Jordan Festival), who, upon listening to a tape recording of Naseer Shamma playing Oud in 1984, found his interest piqued and travelled to Iraq to find out about the young artist and invite him to perform. The artist describes this experience, “I performed at a session, which consisted of songs from Iraqi artists such as Saadoun Jaber. Fifteen minutes were dedicated to my Oud performance. The admiration of the audience was so extraordinary that they introduced me at a private party later. I bagged first prize in the best Arab music category in a survey conducted later by newspapers.’ Upon returning to Iraq, Naseer Shamma joined a delegation representing the Institute of 20
Musical Studies and traveled to festivals in several cities in Switzerland, France and Germany. He accompanied the late Munir Bashir in the trip which was organised in coordination with the German Foreign Ministry. Afterwards, new horizons started to open up for the budding artist. “At this time I began networking with other musicians. Therefore, I started to understand the importance of being educated. So I was keen about enhancing my knowledge about different parts of the universe … I started to study about famous international musicians… I am still trying to develop myself as a musician and will never end that process,” he says. One of Shamma’s most important musical achievements was his addition of two new strings to Oud (which is called eightstring Oud). He played on eight strings rather than the usual six. He was inspired to make this breakthrough based on a manuscript by Al Farabi which suggested that eight strings mimic the layers of the human voice. So how did this musical ‘experiment’ hold up to scrutiny? Shamma certainly
found it to be a success, “I presented the eight-string Oud in a special music evening organised at the National Library Hall. I invited almost all the Iraqi musical giants. I was very keen to maintain good relations with them. Besides, they had attached great importance to my research. ... I was fully prepared to give answers and clarifications to all possible questions which may be asked by the audience on the Oud industry and its playing. I performed Oud in front of great musicians and experts whose eyes were fixed on me and they were skeptical of everything I was saying… The programme ended with all musicians, researchers and journalists standing in ovation. Newspapers announced the birth of the eight-string Oud.” In order to cultivate musical skill among the youth, Shamma also set up Arab Oud House (Bait Al Oud Al Arabi) in 1999 in the Egyptian Opera House in Cairo. He concentrated on creating Oud Soloists, who
graduated from the Bait Al Oud every alternating year, “several amateurs became professional Oud flutists” he explains. “ Whenever a musician develops an acquaintance with his instrument and improves his control over his fingers and the strings, he enters a new phase of self satisfaction. Therefore most of the Arab Oud House alumni enrolled in six universities either for higher studies or teaching.” Even today, Shamma remains devoted to his music, but sometimes has to juggle this with his students and the Bait Al Oud. “When I was a student in Baghdad I used to practice for ten hours. Then it became eight hours and now I train six hours a day. Besides, I travel and maintain relations with my students. “ The music of Shamma, whose country is ravaged by war and conflict, resonates
with pain, love, and forbearance. When asked about the role of politics in his music he explains, “I am a pure musician, but also a musician with a purpose. And everything in our lives has to do with politics. Even bread has its politics. I am concerned not only about the war in Iraq but also Palestine, Lebanon and all places where war has inflicted deep wounds. I feel the pain and sorrow of people and dedicate myself and my best time for them.” One can safely say he has, in a sense, breathed new life into the Oud and asked it to convey the realities of human existence. Songs such as ‘Dream of Maryam’ which depicts the tale of Iraqi children, ‘The land of Isra’, which refers to the plight of Palestinian women, and
‘Dance of a horse’, which creates an image of galloping stallions, are all a testament to this. This music of emotions is new to Arab culture, but has been readily lauded by the critics. Shamma’s mission is not one of self-aggrandisement, “From the very beginning I did not try to make a legacy but was presenting a very important point of view in the contemporary context. I did not introduce myself as a traditional performer, but a thinker who presents his thoughts through a musical instrument…” This talented musician ensures that he
associates his music with ideas he presents before beginning any performance. He says, “…I want to connect the listeners ... I start my performance with speaking and when I think people are listening to me I start singing. I attach great importance to this method so that I can communicate my ideas in words and music and people will compare the idea I spoke with the music I perform.” In essence, theis musician is a wholly -rounded artiste. He is not afraid to explore the new
avenues towards which his instrument may be willing to lead him. His emotional music has wormed its way into the hearts and minds of critics and audiences world-wide. The musician commands both respect and unwitting praise. Shamma is truly a gem of a musician

t’s not just about four walls and a roof anymore. ‘Luxury’ seems to be the newest order of the day when it comes to creating comfortable and upmarket homes for people to live in. From custommade door knobs to designer golf courses and boutiques, a housing development has it all. Of course, location matters too. Perhaps, that is the reason why Oman, with its picture postcard-perfect surroundings, seems to have caught the eye of luxury real estate
developers. The latest to join the bandwagon is Baader Projects,Hotels & Resorts LLC, which is all set to storm the Sultanate’s real estate market with Al Bustan Residences. Established following the initiative of Uto Baader, Chairman and founder of Baader Bank Munich, Baader Projects, Hotels & Resorts LLC was specifically created to develop tourism products and locations in Oman. Baader says, “In my capacity as Deputy Chairman
I am always looking for new and rewarding long-term investment opportunities. The Sultanate is our first entry into the region where we believe there are tremendous opportunities for both real estate and integrated tourism developments in particular. In the immediate future our full focus is on Oman.” The company is jointly owned by Baader and Siegfried Lingel,` the owner of the German Merkur Bank headquartered in Munich as well as Silver Circle

Uto Baader, Founder - Baader Projects, Hotels & Resorts LLC Overseas LLC, the company’s local partner. Lingel is also the Consul General of Mozambique in Germany whilst Baader also assumes the position of Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gulf Baader Capital Market (GBCM), part of a listed investment company in Oman. Explaining why they chose Oman for the debut, Baader says: “Oman stood out to us as the ideal place to invest within this region due to the sound economic policies pursued by the Omani government and the number of successful real estate and tourism developments already completed or underway. Although ours is not an integrated tourism development, the positive signs the Omani real estate market is showing in terms of renewed sales in the first quarter, indicates strong sustainable growth in the future.” So what is Al Bustan Residencies all about?
24
According to Baader, the project is extremely unique and should not be confused with Integrated Tourism Projects such as Barr Al Jissah, Muscat Hills & Country Club and The Wave, Muscat. This development will provide GCC citizens with the chance to buy into a very different proposition. Exclusively positioned in a prime location, homeowners will enjoy the luxury of one of the most prestigious addresses, close to one of the most iconic buildings in the Sultanate . Iconic indeed! Being built near the new Majlis A’Shura building, Muscat Governorate and Al Bustan Palace Hotel - in the Al Bustan area of Muscat, this exclusive and luxurious new development will consist of a total of 47 of the most beautifully designed villas and linked villas all of which will be finished to the highest standards and furnished with the very latest fixtures and fittings. “Families will adore their new homes which will be surrounded by
lush green landscaping and gardens. Some properties also have the luxury of their own private swimming pool allowing all members of the family to enjoy the outdoors in the privacy of their own home.” says Baader. An exclusive health club is also being constructed. This is just tip of the iceberg. Baader Projects, Hotels & Resorts LLC has big visions for Oman’s future cityscape. Says Baader, “The company aims to support the government’s strategic objectives by providing luxury housing to the residents of Oman and the GCC region as well as helping to position Oman as one of the region’s most desirable tourist destinations. It is our objective to develop tourism projects and locations in Oman with a view to supporting the government through the attraction of foreign investment to the region. Whilst the first of our projects will be focused primarily on real estate we do have plans to
introduce integrated tourism developments to Oman in the future. According to Baader, the company will also be supporting the local economy through the employment of enthusiastic young Omanis and will help them to develop their skills and experience through training programmes particularly structured for employees managing the community areas of the development. “Our company is only just commencing operations in the Sultanate so it would be premature to state exactly what our approach may be in the longer term – but we are fully committed to ensuring we hire Omani talent and help to develop it in the future.” It would be no exaggeration to say that Oman is one of the most idyllic places to live in the Middle East. And, Al Bustan Residences will up that quotient by combining unparalleled luxury and fine living, to offer you an experience like never before!

The rooms and suites are done up well and complement the Art Deco touches throughout the hotel. Impeccable room service is a temptation to order in your meals. Since we had landed in the night, we could not see much of the city apart from beautifully landscaped roundabouts that were accentuated by the well-lit roads. The morning was a revelation of sorts. An Oasis city Al Ain (Arabic: ‘The Spring’) does ample justice to the word ‘green’. Located on the UAE eastern border with Oman, Al Ain is its largest inland city, and the second city of the Abu Dhabi Emirate. It is surrounded
by magnificent red sand dunes and an impressive mountain range. Our first stop was Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, which is just an hour-and- a-half drive from Al Ain. Female visitors are not allowed entry unless they are fully covered (abayas and headscarves for women are thoughtfully provided). Once you enter the mosque, it is evident why CNN and Forbes called Abu Dhabi the richest city in the world. Conceptualised by the late President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the mosque’s inaugural cornerstone was laid in the late 90s. Although the original design was Moroccan, the final design incorporated many global features though the exterior walls are of traditional Turkish design. It is a construction that ‘unites the world’, using artisans and materials from countries such
as Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, Turkey, Iran, China, Greece and the UAE. From 28 different types of marble used throughout the structure, to the mosque’s seven 24k gold-plated chandeliers, which are embellished with thousands of Swarovski crystals that were imported from Germany at a cost of about AED30 million (US$ 8.2 million), opulence and grandeur is reflected in every corner of this towering edifice. Our next destination, The Emirates Palace takes magnificence to a whole new level. The hotel, managed by the Kempinski Group, is home to the ATM that dispenses gold. The machine, which monitors the price of gold minute-by- minute, offers small bars that weigh up to 10gm engraved with the
Emirates Palace logo, as well as a variety of coins. Need I say more? You have to see it to believe it! We ended our trip to Abu Dhabi with a spectacular destination (do put this on your must-visit list!). Yas Island, strategically located between the coast and city of Abu Dhabi and Dubai is not just home to the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but it is also a place of many world firsts. Take for example, the world’s first Ferrari theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, featuring the world’s fastest roller coaster. If you want more excitement, the Warner Bros. theme park and Yas Water Park will surely help quench your thirst for spills and thrills.

Post-Abu Dhabi, Al Ain was a welcome change. It is a city that needs to be explored at leisure. Begin with the Oasis, in the heart of the city, which abounds with palm plantations and cool, shady walkways. It has eight separate entrances. Visit the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort, which is said to be is the most progressive facility of its kind in the region, and is home to over 4,000 animals, including the indigenous Arabian oryx and sand gazelle; at least 30 per cent of the 180 species in the park are considered endangered. And, if you really want to see the city for what it is, climb up the towering Jebel Hafeet heights.
30
Rising 1,240m, it affords an impressive view over Al Ain. At Jebel Hafeet’s foothills lies Green Mubazzarah – a park of undulating rocky terrain that has been landscaped, giving the impression of rolling grassy hillsides with streams, hot springs and waterfalls. There are a few things that form an integral part of every itinerary planned for Al Ain. The picturesque Al Jahili Fort is one of them. So, is the Al Ain National Museum, which was built in 1910 and is an ideal portal for people wanting to take a walk down UAE’s heritage and culture. We ended our day at the museum. As we sat in the museum majlis designed like
a Bedouin tent, and sipped on traditional Arabic coffee, I knew that this was a moment I would cherish forever. As we made our way to the airport, I could see the quaint little streets and the hustle bustle of daily life all blend into the crimson skies of a unique desert landscape. It was a moment of epiphany. Indeed, a journey to any destination is not just about the sights and sounds. It is about the experiences and memories you take back home with you

VANTAGE POINT
MARK KENWORTHY, GENERAL MANAGER – AMENA, ANSWERS DEEPA RAJAN’S QUESTIONS ON THE ECONOMIC SLOWDO
W
hile Aston Martin may have achieved popularity as James Bond’s favourite car, there is more to this quintessentially British sports car than that. Aston Martin Lagonda has been a marque revered around the world for its automotive sophistication and performance long before James Bond began using their cars. In fact, we would not be surprised if we discovered that author Ian Fleming gave his hero an Aston Martin in his seventh novel (Goldfinger, which was later made into a movie) because he knew that only the best would do for a super-spy! Their constant need to innovate and grow recently brought Aston Martin to the Middle East, with the establishment of the Aston Martin Middle East and North Africa (AMMENA) as an operational and holding company in order to oversee all the automotive and non-automotive activities in the region.

So when Kenworthy recently visited the Sultanate of Oman to announce Aston Martin’s first dealership in the country with Al Muhannad Al Hashar, Signature caught up with him to discuss economic
meltdowns, Aston Martin’s MENA’s future plans et al. After all, as the GM AMMENA, he does have the best vantage point... What effect has the recent financial crisis had on Aston Martin and has it affected its position in the Middle East Market? “Of course, Aston Martin felt the impact of the global
economic downturn like all other businesses. However, in 2009 we still delivered one of the largest annual sales totals in the company’s history and were profitable.” “For the future we believe that Aston Martin has the best products in the company’s history, dedicated facilities and the right infrastructure – this gives us confidence for the long-term.”

INTERVIEW
34
What are Aston Martin’s plans to grow and improve its market share in the Middle East? “Aston Martin has recently launched the new Rapide 4-door, 4-seater sports car. This new introduction will naturally give us a competitive edge in another segment and will also generate incremental volume. We also have plans to increase our dealer headcount in the region as a consequence both India and Turkey are very important markets for us where we have never had local representation and in both countries.” What do you think is the number-one challenge facing Aston Martin in the ME right now? “Since Aston Martin Middle East & North Africa announced the arrival of a regional office, we have seen a significant level of increase in awareness in our brand from investors looking to research the opportunities for representation in the region. We are working on engaging with appropriate partners who understand and can represent the Aston Martin brand in the right way.” What according to you is Aston Martin’s greatest strength/advantage in the marketplace? “There are many other luxury car brands in the region and of course around the world, but we feel our greatest strength is where the Aston Martin brand offers a unique
proposition to every specific customer and as a result of this we do not necessarily consider that we are in direct competition with other car brands. For instance, the purchase decision for an Aston Martin may be versus other luxury goods such as a piece of art perhaps, not necessarily another car so this we feel is a real strength of our brand.” Off late there has been a great strength on environmentfriendly cars, what steps is Aston Martin taking in this regard? “In context it should be noted that we have produced around 50,000 cars in almost 100 years and the vast majority of those cars form a part of customer fleet or collection. However, we are not exempt from playing a role in reducing the environmental impact of not just our cars, but our facilities. As an example, since the start of a decade we have reduced the tailpipe CO2 emissions’ of our cars by 26 per cent. In addition, we are also currently working on the Aston Martin Cygnet city car concept, which should it proceed to production, will reach the market in 2011 in Europe initially, offering an environmentally conscious city car for use in the urban context.” What do you see as the major differences between the auto industry 20 years ago and today? “The industry on a global scale is changing all the
time as regards to the “20 year window”, yes, all manufacturers have made significant steps with technology and performance. For me the most important differences are in the safety aspects of our cars ensuring that they cannot just perform at high levels but are also significantly safer for both drivers and passengers alike.” What vehicles do you currently own and why? “My current car is an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Coupe, the car suits my current lifestyle needs as well as offering exceptional performance, quality build and exclusivity.” What do you consider the single most significant automobile ever produced? “If I were being completely biased, I’d say the DB4 because it was a car that marked a shift change in sports car design and led to an era of truly iconic sports cars including the latterly DB5 of course. But the one significant non-Aston Martin that I would highlight is the Range Rover as this vehicle opened up a new segment, which brought solutions to both people’s working and recreational needs.” The Al Muhannad Al Hashar – Aston Martin Oman showroom is strategically located in Al-Sarooj, Qurum. The swanky new showroom offers a private display area of 300qm and has been designed to house the full range including the V8 and V12 Vantage, DB9, DBS and new four-door Rapide.

special integrated destination aiming to attract international and local visitors alike with entertainment options for all ages, along with a host of shops and the Omani Heritage Village providing an insight into the heritage and traditions of the country.” The external facade of the souk faces the Omani Heritage Village that provides a typical Omani village backdrop for cultural and social events in this area, complete with palm trees, and a falaj system. The souk itself is a blend of the contemporary with the traditional. The shops have been built around a central glazed courtyard which serves as a coffee shop. The interiors of the courtyard reflect the effervescence of traditional Omani architecture to incorporate palm-matting, wooden beams and Arabic style lanterns. The flooring is a colourful canvas painted with different versions of the travertine marble. As you relax in the cooled interiors of the courtyard with a cup of Omani coffee, do take a moment to admire the centerpiece that consists of a fountain that has gecko ornamental spouts whose water jets are ‘captured’ in strategically placed bowls. The shops around offer you everything ranging from financial services to designer shops such as Muscat Pharmacy, Perfumes and Cosmetics, Hamac, Nick and Friends, as well as Taalali Oman. As you stroll through

the souk, you can also catch glimpses of Omani life captured in photographs from His Excellency Mohammad Al Zubair’s collection. The ‘contemporary’ outlets are well complemented by the traditional atmosphere of the Omani Heritage Village which enhances your cultural experience. The Arabian styled outdoor market with its traditional Omani atmosphere offers a lively and interactive trading experience, attracting a fusion of cultures to one area of confluence. The Village also offers the ideal setting for exhibitions and prestigious events. That’s not all. Created to be more than just a shopping and dining destination, younger guests can also explore the Adventure Zone, an exciting family entertainment venue for all ages with a variety of play areas and party rooms. Al Mazaar, which in Arabic means ‘A place that people frequently visit’, combines the best of both worlds (old and new) to offer international visitors, Omanis and local expatriates a wholesome experience that will have you coming back for more. The legendary Bo Derek once said, “Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” But, you surely know, don’t you? Then, what are you waiting for? CARS

THE XJ FACTOR There are cars and then there are Jaguars. Signature takes a look at why the Jaguar XJ continues to enthrall...
L
aunched in 1968, the XJ has served as Jaguar’s flagship model for most of its life and still continues to do so today. The first car to ever carry the XJ badge was the 2.8l and 4.2l straight-six cylinder powered XJ6. This particular car replaced a majority of the Jaguar saloons which, at the time, had expanded into four separate ranges. Four years after its production, in 1972, a V12 powered version, the aptly labelled XJ12, was announced and subsequently produced. Later, an upmarket version, the Diamler Double Six, also became available, reviving the Daimler model name of 19261938. A year later, in 1973, the XJ line was facelifted, and an additional 3.4l version joined the lineup. This new model is commonly referred to as the ‘Series II’. By the end of its lifecycle, in 1978, the XJ model range included the Jaguar
XJ 3.4, XJ 4.2, XJ 5.3, Daimler Sovereign 4.2, Double-Six 5.3, Daimler Vanden Plas 4.2, Double-Six Vanden Plas 5.3 and the XJ Coupe. In 1979 the XJ was facelifted again and the 2.4l model was dropped, this new model was called the ‘Series III’. The most significant change in the XJ, since its launch, came in 1986 and was dubbed the XJ40. This new model brought about significant improvements to the way Jaguar designed, built and assembled cars. Developments such as a 25 per cent reduction in the number of bodywork panels resulted in not only a more efficient assembly process, but also weight saving and a stiffer structure. Greater attention to panel gaps improved the drag factor while also improving the fuel economy and lowering overall noise inside the cabin. A redesigned automatic transmission selector, dubbed the J-Gate, was used to allow the
manual selection of forward gears without accidentally putting the car into neutral. Despite these changed, the car was considered more evolutionary than revolutionary and the decision to use the controversial square headlamps on all but the lowest specification caused a bit of a stir with long-time Jaguar fans. With the replacement model still a few years away, the XJ40 was redesigned in 1995 under the guidance of Geoff Lawson and the X300 was born. This new model harked back to the sleek looks of the older models and reintroduced the twin circular headlamps to the XJ lineup. In 1997 the second generation XJ received its final change – the X308. With little changed in terms of its exterior design, the interior was overhauled and features included an allnew ‘oval design’ dashboard. Furthermore, an all-new V8 engine was introduced and was available in 3.2 L, 4.0 L and 4.0 L supercharged versions.
49
CARS
In early 2003, Jaguar reintroduced the fabled XJ6 badge with the all-new third generation XJ – the X350. While the car’s exterior and interior styling were traditional in appearance, the car was completely re-engineered and was actually highly technologically advanced. It had an all-aluminium body that made the car very light Dar Hasnaa, Marrakech, Morroco compared to rivals, bringing improvements in performance, agility and economy. It was also a larger all round offering much improved interior and luggage space. Also, aside from the introduction of the new 3.0l V6, the V8 engine was also offered in larger 3.5 and 4.2 Litre sizes and a supercharged 4.2 Litre variant was also available. A new 6 speed automatic gearbox was also fitted along with fully computer controlled air suspension all round, which provided adaptive damping as well as rear self levelling. Now it seems that Jaguar is throwing ‘retro’ look right out the window with the introduction of their latest revision of the XJ lineup, while still keeping some of the design cues that distinguish it as Jaguar’s flagship model. The new fourth generation XJ, in keeping with Ian Callum’s new design direction for Jaguar, offers a modern reinterpretation of a number of key XJ design cues while maintaining the highest standards of personal luxury. This is evident in how the strong, muscular lower half of the car contrasts with the
50
slim and graceful quality of the roofline; a nod to the original 1968 XJ sedan. The front of the car has clear links with the XF, although with slimmer, sleeker lights and a larger grille that makes for a more aggressive appearance. A standard panoramic glass roof is an integral part of the all-new XJ design, enabling the car to have a lower, more streamlined roofline, while dramatically enhancing the feeling of light and space inside. The LED light clusters wrap over the rear fenders, and feature three dramatic red vertical strips. Two of the most striking features of the rear are the black roof panels each side of the rear screen, which aim to hide the XJ’s width, and the conscious absence of ornamentation; the rear features only a single leaping Jaguar. The sleek design and refined luxury continues inside the all-new XJ by mixing newly advanced technologies and contemporary design to create an environment more akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a luxury car cabin. Chrome and piano black detailing provide an
eye-catching contrast to the beautifully crafted leather and veneer surfaces. To further complement the cabin design, Jaguar offers a level of choice in colors, woods and leathers not seen before in a Jaguar. Four specification levels – XJ, XJL, Supercharged and Supersport – allow the customer to tailor the car to suit their tastes. The top-ofthe-range Supersport provides the ultimate expression of performance and luxury, with a specification that includes leather headlining, semianiline leather seats and woods with laser inlays. A stunning 12.3-inch highdefinition Virtual Instrument gauges complement an innovative 8-inch touch-screen that displays vehicle functions ranging from audio and video to navigation and climate control. Premium surround sound options include the topof-the-range 1200-watt Bowers & Wilkins system, itself a standard on the Supercharged and Supersport models. Advanced infotainment features include hard drivebased audio and navigation systems, and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices.
The all-new XJ’s beauty is much more than skindeep. All engines transmit power through an enhanced version of Jaguar’s acclaimed electronically controlled, sixspeed automatic transmission which has a fully-adaptive shift system that delivers extremely smooth gear changes and works to balance performance and economy. With the XJ, Jaguar has built upon its leading-quality performance using the latest technologies. Features such as air suspension, Adaptive Dynamics (continuously variable shock damping), Active Differential Control (on Supercharged and Supersport) and quick-ratio power steering
deliver a remarkable blend of responsive, dynamic handling at the same time as the refined, supple ride expected from a Jaguar. The new XJ will be available with a choice of three engines: a 5.0-liter, 385hp naturally-aspirated V8; a 5.0-litre, 470-hp supercharged V8; and a 5.0-litre, 510-hp supercharged V8. In naturallyaspirated form, the XJ develops 380 lb.-ft. of torque. The supercharged versions develop 424 lb.-ft. and 461 lb.-ft. of torque, respectively. All three engines combine deft performance, unparalleled character and have a unique blend of strength and precision that is to be expected from a Jaguar

QUINTESSENTIALLY INDIAN KURKUM, LOCATED IN THE BUSTLING HEART OF HISTORICAL MUTTRAH , SERVES YOU FLAVOURS OF INDIA, ALBEIT WITH A DIFFERENCE, SAYS EMAN RAFAY
Y
ou love Indian food and everything else associated with India. Needless to say that you frequent almost all Indian restaurants with their overtly Indian themes that begin with the name and cover everything ranging from ornate designs on the menu to ethnic sculptures and paintings ‘specially imported’ from India. So, you might be a tad bit baffled if we were to tell you that there is a new restaurant in town that serves the most delectable Indian fare there is to consume and yet looks and feels anything but Indian. Named Kurkum (Arabic for turmeric, one of the most used spices in Indian cooking), this place keeps it simple. Almost a well-kept secret (not any more!), Kurkum is located in the bustling heart of Muttrah, one of the most historical pieces of real estate in Muscat and is, quite simply put, a breath of fresh air. Minimalist in its design with a sea of crisp white interiors; contemporary in its decoration with canvases of
strikingly elegant art bringing out the freshness of magenta flowers that sit poised on every table, Kurkum’s ethos lies in the food it serves. The minimalism is limited only to the interiors. For, they go all out to make sure that the service is impeccable and the food served is delicious and healthy. Finest attention is paid to every detail. Hitesh Rawat, Manager of Kurkum, says, “When we came up with the Indian concept, we didn’t want to provide what was expected, that old traditional style of Indian cuisine where one needs to rummage through the spices and the grease (oil and butter) before getting to the actual food. The philosophy we follow encapsulates the beliefs of our health conscious customers. We pride ourselves in ensuring that every dish is prepared in the healthiest manner possible to offer the best of customer service.” From traditional Indian dishes to contemporary Indian fusions, the menu is tailor-made to cater to all tastes. Feast on wraps that include the Chicken Tikka wrap (grilled chicken pieces
wrapped in Indian bread), Indian Omelette sandwich (Indian style omelette with chopped onions, tomatoes and spices stuffed in bread slices) or go healthy with soups and salads such as the Curry Potato soup and Rocket Salad with Peanut sauce. Do try the Fish Samosas (Indian puff pastry stuffed with minced hammour fish and spices), Indian Chicken Dim Sum with Tamarind Chutney (Steamed minced chicken dumplings served with tomato and tamarind chutney) and Indian Prawns Dim Sum with Tamarind Chutney (Steamed minced prawns dumplings served with tomato and tamarind chutney) which serve as appetizers. For the mains, you can choose from the chicken dishes such as Tandoori Roasted Chicken (traditional spiced whole or half chicken cooked in clay oven) or the Butter Chicken (charcoal grilled boneless chicken pieces in mild creamy tomato gravy). Want to try something different? Tuck into some Chicken Dhansak (boneless chicken pieces in aubergine and tamarind gravy) or some Goan Coconut Chicken Curry (boneless chicken pieces in Goan style
coconut curry). The menu also has a variety of lamb, fish and vegetarian dishes. Do bear in mind that this is just the Master menu we are talking about! You can order from any of the other menus available in the restaurant: namely the Afternoon menu, the Light menu and the Dinner menu. But, what really impressed us is that you can order from one or all the menus at any given time. Now, that’s a luxury that one does not always come across in restaurants! You can either sit inside surrounded by the white tranquility and relish the mouth-watering food or sit outside watching the sights and sounds of the Mutrrah Corniche, and enjoying a nice cuppa’ with some of ’em scrumptious scones. Either ways, you will never want to leave. Even if you do leave, the smell of the sea mingling with the rhythmic heart beat of the historical Muttrah streets will linger on long after; long enough for you to know that it’s just a matter of time. You know you’ll be back soon enough

Wellness, Unlimited! Experience the luxurious side of health at the state-of-the-art Clinique La Prairie, located in Montreux, scenic Switzerland‌

What do Winston Churchill, Marlene Dietrich and Pope Pius XII have in common? They all have experienced luxury health care at the Clinique La Prairie (CLP) at some point in their life. We could tell you that (CLP) is a spa. We could also tell you that it is a residential health centre that offers expert services for everything from surgery, dentistry, cardiology
to dermatology. But we would be selling this place short. It is much more than that. CLP located in Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva. Known as the Swiss Riviera, the climate there is temperate and the majestic Swiss and French Alps surround the lake. The Geneva airport is one hour away with limousine service upon request.
The Clinique has been around for about 80 years and its beginnings have the makings of a plot for one of Robin Cook’s many medical thrillers. Only this one got it right! Way back in 1931, a doctor had an interesting idea of injecting people with young organ cells collected from sheep. The theory was that these early

organ cells would stimulate cellular rejuvenation and offer a series of ‘wellness’ benefits meant to make you feel younger and stimulate the immune system. The doctor, Paul Niehans, whose mother was a member of Germany’s royal family, was born on November 21, 1882. He began his career studying philosophy, theology and humanism, before deciding on medicine and surgery and graduating from the University of Zurich. Before taking up his medical practice, he spent time in military service, serving as a mission leader with the Red Cross in Serbia (1912-1913), then as a surgeon at the frontlines of the Dolomites (1915), and subsequently put in charge of German prisoners of war (1918).
Encouraged by his groundbreaking experiment, Niehans slowly increased the number of injections into patients. Before making his discovery public, his goal was to conduct 5,000 studies on patients. However, fate intervened in 1953 when Vatican doctors urgently called upon Niehans to help Pope Pius XII, who had fallen ill. At the request of the Vatican, Niehans successfully administered cell therapy to the Pope at his bedside and within days, the entire world knew about Niehans, Clinique La Prairie and benefits of cellular therapy. For 20 years, Niehans continued to use fresh sheep foetus cells gathered from specific organs to treat patients for specific diseases. The good doctor retired in 1966 and died in 1971 at the age of 89. His successors went on treating people in the same way that he had done until 1988. At that time, CLP Extract was introduced and was used for extensive research programmes by a scientific team led by

professor Otto Westphal. CLP Extract possesses all the essential properties of fresh cells without side effects. The Clinique keeps tight tabs on the process and the formula. They even raise sheep themselves in Switzerland to harvest the cells. With an in-house medical staff of twenty doctors, plus, 60 consulting doctors, patients have unlimited access to experts whose combined expertise covers approximately 25 different specialties. Virtually every branch of medicine is represented. The Medical Center includes specialised departments such as the Dental Clinic, the Menopause Center and the Center for Aesthetic Medicine. Patients who require surgery have access to highly trained surgeons and state-of-the-art operating theaters for general, orthopaedic, gynaecological and plastic surgery. Alongside the clinic is the award-winning Spa, which opened in 2005. Fully integrated with the Medical Center, it houses a full

service thalassotherapy and fitness center with two pools. Licensed beauticians work in collaboration with the medical staff to ensure that appropriate treatments are offered according to each individual patient’s diagnosis. The in-house skincare line, Swiss Perfection, is used for all treatments at the spa, which has won numerous citations and awards from Conde Nast Traveler, SpaFinder and the Sunday Times of London since 2006. All treatments are conducted under medical supervision. Treatments are available in weekly, daily, à la carte or weekend packages for patients of the clinic as well as walk-in guests. Spa specialties include: ATS, a treatment that uses gold electrodes and an electric current to stimulate papillary skin. It produces an immediate lifting effect while regenerating deep skin tissue and improving face, neck and neckline wrinkles and skin tone. Another is Simonin Anti Wrinkle Toning Treatment, an Electroridopuncture treatment that stimulates the skin’s collagen and improves the
Best described as a wellness center, the CLP features luxury accommodations (people usually spend several days or weeks there to get treatments), and everything else you need to feel at home. Surrounded by postcard perfection plus a temperate climate with the majestic Swiss Alps as a backdrop, and the shores of Lake Geneva on its doorstep, it is no less than a resort. From check in to check out, it offers fivestar quality ambience and décor, from the luxuriously appointed client guestrooms, to the spacious bathrooms with terraces and balconies overlooking the clinic’s garden and Rodin’s Cybèle sculpture. You could very well be in a luxury Swiss hotel, save for the hospital style beds in the room, the ‘call nurse’ buttons, and the quiet, almost austere feel to the place. They also have an amazing kitchen where you’ll eat quite well. A calorie-controlled cordon bleu menu is offered at the gourmet restaurant, which meets the specific needs of the individual patients. The restaurant is also open to the public.
You can visit the CLP to lose weight, get spa treatments, or medical treatments. The end result is always the same: Complete recuperation and total rejuvenation. And, you can do all this while basking in the luxury of a resort-like ambiance, not to mention enjoying remarkably good weather in the complete seclusion of the ethereal charm of the Swiss surroundings. Who said luxury and health cannot be enjoyed at one go!
DID YOU KNOW?
Your favourite La Prairie skincare products were launched officially in 1978, proved to be a very successful venture. However, ultimately, the clinic preferred to remain as a clinic, so the skincare brand was sold some years later to entrepreneur Georgette Mosbacher. Today, La Prairie skincare products are owned by Germany’s Beiersdorf Group and, as a cosmetics brand, it continues to generate worldwide awareness about the clinic even though there is no further connection. In 1992, a new in-house skincare brand called Swiss Perfection was created at the clinic, based on the rejuvenating effects of the cells of the Iris Germanica root. All spa services utilise the Swiss Perfection products. The line is sold exclusively at the clinic, and at selected beauty salons around the world, except in the US.
GAMING
TWO’S COMPANY THE FIRST GAME IN THE SERIES ENJOYED LIMITED SUCCESS WHEN IT WAS RELEASED BUT WAS CRITICISED ON A NUMBER OF GROUNDS. WE CHECK OUT THE SEQUEL TO SEE THESE HAVE BEEN IRONED OUT FOR THE SERIES TO ACHIEVE THE GREATNESS IT DESERVED...
A decade has passed since the first game, and the face of E.D.N. III has changed dramatically. Terraforming efforts have been successful and the ice has begun to melt, giving way to lush tropical jungles and harsh unforgiving deserts. Players will enter this new environment and follow the exploits of their own customised snow pirate on their quest to seize control of the changing planet. Unlike the first game, players will now control their heroes across 6 interconnected episodes which are further subdivided into chapters. But don’t let this fool you into thinking that the game has a deep and involving plot, in fact it is quite the opposite. By constantly shifting narrative from one faction to the other, you can never truly attach yourself to any one faction nor can you share any attachment to the characters you encounter. The bland voice acting doesn’t help matters either. So, while the story may not be as convoluted as the first, it is lacking any sort of drama or involvement but at the very least it doesn’t adversely affect the

gameplay in any way. If there is one thing the game does right, it is the presentation. The visuals and presentation are easily up there with the best. The lush environments are stunning to look at and the monstrosities that roam the wild are expertly designed while the bosses are truly epic. Even the machinery that you operate really stands out. On the other hand the character models themselves don’t share the same attention to detail as the rest of the game and just end up feeling somewhat lifeless and robotic. Aside from said flaw everything else, visually and acoustically, hit just the right notes. Aside from the presentation, the largest improvement in the
sequel is quite easily the single player campaign, albeit with quite a significant catch. The levels themselves are reasonably well designed and most boss battles are truly epic requiring proper strategy to take down. The controls, although preset and non customisable, are decent and responsive making for some truly challenging battles. Unfortunately, if you are planning on playing the game offline you will have to rely on the AI to take the place of your team mates and this is where the game goes downhill, or in this case falls right off a cliff. This is because the game’s AI is completely and utterly incompetent. The AI has so many faults that it will be impossible to list them all here but to summarise– your team mates will be
completely unreliable, will be unable to complete crucial tasks and will die a lot. The game supports split-screen, which will alleviate some of the frustration but to completely get rid of it you will have to look into the online option. When you do so, and you find four friends to play with, the game will be infinitely more fun and will keep you busy for hours on end.
second fiddle to the more mainstream online games such as Call of Duty, Halo and the like. So to put it simply, if you are planning on playing the game online, it is definitely worth considering, simply for its entertaining campaign, but otherwise game is just not worth the investment
The game also has its share online only modes including a versus mode and a variation of capture the flag. Some are decent at best and are good for killing time while others are poorly balanced and frustrating. Single player elements and game mechanics such as grappling, add some level of depth to the online play but, like in most cases, Lost Planet 2 will always play

COME OCTOBER AND BONHAMS WILL BE HOLDING THEIR FIRST EVER COLLECTORS’ MOTOR CARS AUCTION AT THE ROYAL MIRAGE HOTEL, DUBAI. BONHAM’S PHILIP KANTOR ANSWERS DEEPA RAJAN’S QUESTIONS ON THE AUCTION AND MORE…
I
n his column for the popularmechanics. com, well known American television host Jay Leno writes, “I never really understood why people buy Harlequin romance novels. You know the ones: A lady meets a man who seems to be an innocuous guy but later turns out to be a prince. They have titles like So-and-So’s First Date, or They Met at the Market. Why does anybody read this stuff? But that’s exactly the kind of romantic relationship you can have with old cars. You see one; you pine for it…” Completely understandable, considering Leno is said to own approximately 200 vehicles, including about 100 (classic) cars. We are sure, without a doubt, that the same thought finds echo in many such collectors out there. It is not just the passion of it all that drives the hobby, it is also that collecting cars is a worthy investment, just like art. Only, this is movable art! So, where does one go looking for vintage cars? Old garges are one option. Auctions are another. But, not just any auction will do. It is here that auction houses such as Bonhams step in. The company has been one of the leading international auctioneers of Collectors’
Motor Cars and has always been known for its pioneering sales. They were the first to hold auctions in Monaco in the 1980s and now have annual sales all over the world, often coinciding with prestigious events, in the USA, UK, Monaco, Paris and Australia. Now, come the traditional October auction season and Bonhams will be holding their first ever Collectors’ Motor Cars auction at the Royal Mirage Hotel, Dubai. The auction, which will also include vintage and limited edition watches, promises to whet a true collector’s appetite. Curious enough, Signature decided to get some answers of its own and decided to quiz Philip Kantor, International Director Business Development and Head of European Motor Cars at Bonhams, about the auction and more particularly about what drives classic and vintage car auctions. Signature: Can you tell us something about the Bonham’s Collectors’ Motor Cars auction? What can collectors look forward to at the event? PK: The auction will be the first of its kind in the Middle East and Bonhams are very excited at the prospect of offering collector’s cars for the first time in the region. The sale already includes two pristine and concours restored

examples of BMWs - the iconic CSL ‘Batmobile’ and M1 which are both being offered by the BMW museum in Munich. This is a first for BMW and Bonhams are honoured to have been chosen as the auction house to offer these cars. Further entries in the sale include two unique Ferraris with the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Shooting Brake and the ‘Pinin’, Ferrari’s only four door concept car that’s now running, as well as an Ital Design Aztec. still a good investment — even in the economic downturn? PK: Collector’s motor cars have proven to be a solid investment with excellent returns on the right models. Tangible assets are sought after by investors in uncertain financial climates and the advantage with collector’s cars is that they are mobile and can therefore be realised in the most advantageous currency worldwide when the asset is possibly reoffered for sale in the future.
Signature: Why do vintage cars hold their value? PK: There is definitely an element of nostalgia involved but the motor car has now been part of human civilisation for over a century and like any object, those that are rare, portray excellence of construction, performance and design are sought after and will always be a collectible. Signature: Do you foresee vintage cars holding, increasing, or declining in value over the next 12 months?
PK: As always I don’t pretend to have a crystal ball but I am convinced that the rarest, and the most desirable motor cars will rise steadily in value while providing their owners with enjoyment at the same time. Cars can be driven, shown or raced; you can’t do that with many investments! Signature: What are the most desirable collectible vintage cars? PK: The great models usually are of great marques. Like in the art market, everything that

is rare, beautiful and important commands a premium. Production numbers, too, are of importance; obviously unique cars will always be a far better investment than those models that have been produced in large numbers. Cars with a good racing history or flamboyant coachwork signed by the great coachbuilders are likely to rise even more strongly in the future. Signature: Who are the most active buyers? Private collectors, retailers, the trade?
PK: There is obviously always an element of trade buying in the market but we find that the most significant purchases are currently being made by high end, educated private individuals who wish to diversify their investments and enjoy their passion, in this case for cars. Signature: Any advice or tips for vintage cars collectors? What must one know while bidding for a vintage car. Any do’s and dont’s? PK: Get as much advice
as you can before making a purchase, study the auction catalogue carefully, have the car inspected if you wish, ask for a condition report or any questions you may have before you raise your paddle and make sure that you are satisfied with the object you will be bidding on. At Bonhams we wish to make your experience a pleasant and satisfying one, as our relationships with clients is based on excellent long term business
