A WAY OF LIFE

Visiting museums in Oman cannot be just another tourist activity. For a country with a rich cultural heritage like ours, going back in time is vivid, magical and very emotional. For, the vestiges of the past do play a great role in the present, for what has been, has made the present possible and will perhaps define the future as well. Therefore a visit to each museum is an intense experience. The striking architecture, symbols of Omani heritage, and depictions of events of the past – each facet tells a story of a land rooted deep in culture. A museum or an art gallery is just that – windows to different worlds, a celebration of a bygone era, That’s what art’s all about, isn’t it? The ability to perceive both the ordinary, everyday occurrences and the ground-breaking ones and learn from its co-existence… As Elbert Hubbard says, “Art is not a thing, it is a way.” If you break it up in simple terms, art is an intrinsic part of our everyday lives. One that enriches us in different ways. If you are an artist, it’s an expression of your creativity. And everyone is an art lover… whether you understand it or not…taking note of the creativity around you and revelling in it is appreciation of art in its truest form.

O

man Green Awards (OGA) 2012 has once again proved that creating ‘a green economy’ is the need of the hour as environmental issues and economic development increasingly intersect and complement each other. Nineteen finalists, including two joint winners, won awards in nine different categories of OGA at a function held at Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz Carlton Hotel, under the auspices of His Excellency Mohammed Said Al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs. In a specially created green ambience at the Majan Ballroom, a discerning audience of more than 200 guests, comprising of top representatives of Oman’s corporate houses, schools and other non-governmental institutions, applauded in acknowledgement of the fact that OGA is an ideal green platform to stir up people’s interest and awaken positive activism for environmental goals and greater action in the long term, both at a community and decision-making levels. Coinciding with the World Environment Day on June 5, OGA has been conceptualised by OER and United Media Services (UMS) and is being held in association with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Muscat Municipality and the Ministry of Health.

The event has received massive support from corporate houses and individuals who have made this ‘green mission’ a priority. Oman Oil Marketing Company, Octal and Muriya Tourism have joined as Green Oman partners to keep the green torch burning bright in the country. CULT SUCCESS CREATORS OF QUEEN & CULT, PAOLO AND MARIA TERESA DURANTE TALK TO DEEPA RAJAN ABOUT THEIR BRAND AND WHY IT’S ALL THE RAGE… 16

BAGS AS A FASHION ACCESSORY MARIA: “I believe that bags are an integral part of any look a woman carries. A bag completes the outfit. It brings out the personality of the individual carrying it. When I have my bag with me, I feel complete and secure! Even if you have a bad hair day or you think your outfit is just not right, if you end up carrying a good bag, the focus goes on it and you are sorted!”

S

omeone once said that a woman's mind is as complex as the contents of her handbag; even when you get to the bottom of it, there is always something at the bottom to surprise you! Little did Paolo Durante know the surprise he was in for when he challenged his wife Maria Teresa Durante to design her own line of bags. Maria, who is a ‘bag-o-holic’ (like yours truly!) used to pick up bags almost every week.

She says, “If there was a new bag in the market, I had to buy it. Sometimes, I would buy not one, but two or three of them. Paolo was not very pleased about the expenditure and told me that you are part of the textile industry, you have the required set of skills, why don’t you start your own line of bags.” Maria thought it was mere anger on Paolo’s part that made him suggest such a thing, nevertheless she went ahead and designed 10 bags as prototypes. “Paolo promised me that he would take these creations to retail and departmental stores in Switzerland, which he actually did and he got back with an order of about 1,500 bags! That was our first ever order.” The seeds of what would soon become a cult brand were sown under the PMD AG umbrella. Shakespeare once said, “What’s in a name…” Well, in today’s brand-conscious world, a name is what sells. During his interaction with his clients, Paolo Durante, the Chief Executive Officer of PMD realised that selling without a label would make no sense. "During the initial period, one of our customers asked me if the bags had a brand name and suggested that if the bags did not carry a label, then Paolo should create one. "I went back and shared this feedback with Maria, who is the Creative Director of PMD. I distinctly remember that then (10-15 years ago) it was the ‘era of the queen’. So, I thought we should also associate our product line with the word ‘queen’. But Queen by itself seemed insufficient and then Maria came up with the word ‘cult’ so that’s how Queen & Cult came to be.” This was 2004. After their rapid success in the domestic (Swiss) market, they took their brand to neighbouring countries like Germany and Austria. Paolo says, “It took us about six to eight months to build our brand as a high-end luxury status symbol. Then, we decided that we needed to create a collection that would spell affordable luxury as well. We wanted to reach out to a wider audience, without compromising on our quality. That is how Princess & Cult was born.” It is a known fact that women love bags, but the truth is men love them too. So when there were special lines being created for women, why leave the men out? This line of thought led to the launch of King & Cult. “You know it’s a fact that men are more complicated when it comes to accessories. We put in a lot of thought while buying something for ourselves. So, we wanted to make a basic yet fashionable line for men who wanted functional yet good-looking accessories such as laptop bags and belts. Looking back, after Queen & Cult and Princess &

PEOPLE

Cult, it was quite logical that we follow it up with King & Cult. It is hard work, dedication and excellent team work from this Swiss couple that has taken these brands to new heights of success. The lady of the house (as Paolo puts it) comes up with the designs. According to Paolo, Maria has the golden touch and she, along with her team of talented designers, creates unique collections. It is an all-women team and Maria laughs when she says that Paolo is the only man in the company! But that in no way diminishes his role. Maria says she depends on Paolo to be her eye in the sky and bring back feedback from the market. “Paolo brings back with him important information from the market. He also gets the customer's feedback, which is very important when you are in a business such as ours. We go ahead and create a product only when there is scope for it to sell. We work as a team to make sure that our brand gets the best visibility in the market.” Paolo adds, “Our philosophy is to build a

18

colourful world around us. It is very important for any designer to actually listen to their customers and always keep their feedback in mind while creating a product. Here’s an example: Someone once remarked to us that it is often difficult to find things in a bag because it is so dark inside. The dark effect is cause by the commonly used black cloth to line the insides of a bag. So we decided not to use black or any other dark colour and instead went with a pink lining, which has now become one of our trademark features.” Of course, for men’s products they have replaced it with navy blue lining. They have also created a bag-in-bag, which is basically a small bag for cosmetics and other small items within the bigger hand bag. If there is one thing that both Maria and Paolo are very vehement about it is the about the quality of the product that they offer. According to Paolo there is a lot that goes into making sure that the final product is of the best quality. Right from the design to the materials used, everything goes through strict quality

control. “We are a Swiss label and you can always bank on Swiss credibility. We would never compromise on the quality of the product and the materials,” quips a proud Paolo. That is exactly the reason why apart from a one-year guarantee, with every bag comes the assurance of it being a one of a kind piece. Each bag comes with a unique serial number that is carved inside the bag. This unique code assures you personalised service at all times. That’s not all. PMD is very strict about the leather it uses in its products. Everything is certified and subjected to strict quality control measures. Paolo says, “We make sure that we use only government-approved products as the market in Europe is very sensitive to such things. But it is not just about adhering to government regulations, we feel it is our moral and ethical responsibility too and it is one of the reasons why we do not used any product that comes from animals that have been tortured or killed for commercial purposes. We have a certification of the genuine leather so you can be assured of the quality of the

MARIA’S TIPS ON HOW TO BUY A BAG “She must feel secure and comfortable when it comes to buying a bag. There are different things to pay attention to when you go buy a bag. One must understand that different bags cater to different occasions. “When buying a bag for work, one should understand that it needs to be simple yet stylish without being in-your-face, whereas when buying a bag for a specific occasion like marriages or evening events, one can experiment with bags with embellishments and bold colours.” “If you are buying a leather bag make sure it is high grade leather and has the necessary certifications. The zipper needs to be of good quality so that your belongings are safe. The belongings in your bags should also be easily accessible. You cannot have a bag that is difficult to handle. The finishing of the bag is very important as is the inner lining. The handles are also an important element. Always make sure you have a long handle as well as a short one.

product.” The passion and drive that fuels the Durantes has taken them to great heights and across the world. They have now set their eyes on the Middle East and much to our surprise have chosen Oman to launch their brand into the region. Why Oman? Paolo says, “I always wanted to position my brand in the Middle East. The idea to launch it in Oman was born soon after a discussion with Alessandro Gugolz, president, Chamber of Commerce, Switzerland to Oman.“ We wanted Queen & Cult to resonate with the international audience and did not want to limit it to the French or Swiss trendsetters. According to Alessandro, Oman was the perfect market to make our Middle East debut. Soon we met Sharif M. Al Bakry, who is now our distributor for Middle East, Asia & Africa and decided to hold a fashion show here in Muscat.” Sharif says, “When I met Paolo and Alessandro my only question to them was ‘how are these bags different from other

well-known brands?’. To this, Paolo showed me a bag and made me feel it. All he said was that 'our product speaks for itself'. It was enough to convince me. PMD has a strong presence in Europe and has moved its sales to Japan as well. Our aim is to make it as popular in the Middle East. Apart from looking at business partners in the Middle East, India and Africa, we are also looking at launching a regional website so that it becomes more accessible to its clients. I believe that once you have built the brand name and faith in customers, it becomes easier to sell the product. And that’s exactly what we are aiming to do here.” Amen to that! The brand may not be wellknown in the Middle East, but its popularity and success is guaranteed. Armed with more than a bagful of passion, hard work and dedication, Paolo, Maria and team will make sure that Queen & Cult becomes more than just a designer label. It’s something that everyone shall covet and we can vouch for that. (We have already booked a few bags for the next season!)

“The most important thing is that you should buy a bag that you will use. It’s not a souvenir to be kept in your wardrobe and admired.”

PAOLO ON TAKING CARE OF LEATHER BAGS “We have special leather polishes and cloth to mend leather. In the Middle East, we would recommend keeping them in dust bags when not in use, and also keep them in cool places. Use leather sprays to avoid fungi development and foul odour.”

RETROSPECTIVE

HUBS OFCULT Oman’s cultural legacy is impressive as portrayed in its bustling souks, imposing forts various ethnic arts, royal fragrances, opulent architecture, traditional fashion and jewellery, literary genres, folk arts and performances. In 2006, Muscat was the designated Cultural Capital of the Arab World showcasing its legacy through events hosted throughout that year.

But, as someone once said that history is representational, while time is abstract: both of these statements hold true for museums. In a nation such as ours, which abounds with history and heritage, museums not only function as a representation of history and time, they also provide vital insights into the nation’s current traditions. We bring you a list of our favourite museums and art galleries that have served as Oman’s cultural easel for years together.

BAIT AL BARANDA

O

pened on December 16, 2006 to the public by His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, the premises had previously housed the American Mission in the early 1930s and the British Council in the late 1970s. This project was part of Muscat Municipality’s plan to establish a centre that depicts the history of Muscat and part of its initiatives to bring to life the city’s history in this worthy of old building along the Muttrah seafront. The introduction of Bait Al Baranda to the public is a breath of fresh impetus to art and culture and no monetary value can overshadow what the centre has done within its community. As Muscat witnesses a whole new approach to the art sector, Bait Al Baranda has emerged as an active player in promoting arts and culture through the various art exhibitions and events that showcase both home-grown and international talent. Most importantly, Bait Al Baranda has identified a niché of its own: the children of Oman. The institution aspires to introduce and encourage new talent at all times, as art is a natural channel for nurturing children’s creativity, be it in the arts, science or technology. Is it any wonder then that the summer event that Bait Al Baranda has been hosting for these past five years, aimed at children, has been a huge success. Muscat hosts and introduces art, cultural and educational activities, and has transformed in recent years into an impressive leisure and entertainment hub for Oman and Bait Al Baranda is a public platform committed to continuing this trend. As part of the Muscat Municipality, the institution is enjoying a particularly creative and hectic 2012-13, helping generate a hunger for art, sports, fashion and food in the city with their role in the Muscat Festival, hosting these vibrant activities through creative development. Future plans include introducing new interactive 3D displays in most of the themed rooms at Bait Al Baranda. Studies are under way now to look at various options being offered by renowned companies across the globe. In the ever-expanding Omani cultural and social calendar, Bait Al Baranda, located next to the A’ Sultan Qaboos Port, has become an iconic place of culture and art. With the harbour soon being turned into a cruise liner hub, it can only mean more popularity for Bait Al Baranda as one of the top tourist attractions in town! BAIT AL ZUBAIR Bait Al Zubair (House of Al Zubair) is a private museum that opened its carved wooden doors to the public in 1998. The museum displays the Zubair family’s collection of Omani artifacts that date from the 3rd Millennium BC to the present day, and is considered to be one of the finest that is privately owned. The museum complex consists of five separate buildings (Bait Al Bagh, Bait Al Dalaleel, Bait Al Oud, Bait Al Nahdhah and the museum gift shop) as well as a surrounding garden with a number of traditional features. There is a barasti (palm frond) hut, a falaj (ancient water distribution system), a souq area, a boat display and a miniature village to explore. The main building in the museum is Bait Al Bagh (house of Gardens) that was originally founded as a family home in 1914 by Sheikh Al Zubair bin Ali. Exhibits include information regarding the Al Busaidi dynasty; with portraits of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said and various other Sultans. There are also four galleries on the ground floor that exhibit excellent examples of khanjar (Omani dagger), male and female attire, traditional swords and firearms, antique jewellery and household articles. On the first floor there is a research library (available by appointment) and other galleries under development. Bait Dalaleel (house of the Dalaleel district) is an adjacent house that has been carefully restored and renovated and symbolizes the true essence of vernacular architecture in Oman. This attraction allows visitors to step back in time and literally experience how Omanis lived over 100 years ago. It has a majlis (guest lounge), bedroom and domestic date store to discover. It also houses a coffee shop and art gallery – showing Omani artists’ works that are also for sale. Visitors can have a light lunch there and sample Omani coffee, juices, sodas and ice cream. BAIT MUZNA Internationally-renowned American artist Robert Smithson, writing about artistic confinements, says: “A vacant white room with lights is still a submission to the neutral. Works of art seen in such spaces seem to be going through a kind of aesthetic convalescence.” He could very well be speaking of the Bait Muzna Gallery, which in its contemporary avatar accentuated by its cotton white walls, infuses a breath of fresh air to every piece of artwork that exists within. Nestled in the heart of Old Muscat, the Gallery has its own history. Originally the home of a member of the Royal Family, this traditionally-styled house was renovated for use as an art gallery in 1999, opening its doors to all of Oman in January 2000. The Gallery opened its doors at a time when the only other venue for art exhibitions was the Omani Society for Fine Arts. A few years after the opening, more local galleries began to appear. But the Bait Muzna had already set a trend of promoting local artists, both Omani and expatriate; and of holding major international exhibitions. Tapping into Muscat’s emerging art scene, several of the European and Asian Embassies in Oman began to sponsor exhibitions of world-class, as well as up-and coming young artists from their home countries, often paired with equally-talented artists from Muscat. The Gallery also helped place Oman on the global art map by exhibiting annually at the Art Paris Abu Dhabi, starting in 2006; and by entering the pages of ‘Canvas’, a prominent art publication in Dubai, where important exhibitions in the major cities of the world are announced. Today, Bait Muzna’s highly professional team offers services such as Art Consultancy – Art projects for the corporate world including hotels and restaurants, banks and large corporations, official or diplomatic residences, private properties. The gallery also offers framing, packing and Installation of Art work services. The gallery’s plan for 2012-2013 include art exhibitions at the new headquarter of Bank of Beirut and at Bait Muzna gallery, Royal Opera Mall For more details log on to www.baitmuznagallery.com

GHALYA'S MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

Ghalya's Museum of Modern Art is an exclusive addition to the Omani cultural scene, opened in January ‘2011 under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq bin Taimour Al Said. Located close to the Muttrah Fort, the museum is the dream project of Her Highness Sayyida Dr Ghalya bint Fahr bin Taimour Al Said. The Museum can be divided into three sections; the first one being the ‘Old House’, which opened recently amid much fanfare. Safely ensconced within its pristine white walls are artefacts that tell stories of the deeply rooted Omani heritage, customs and traditions. In their natural setting, the display items reflect the philosophy of Omani life by examining the details of life during the period between 1950 and the early years of the Renaissance. In the Old House, Musabbeh’s room, the Majlis (living room), the winter room, the children’s room, the exhibition room, the kitchen, and the bride’s room all illustrate the Omani lifestyle of that era. Ghalya’s Museum is not all about heritage. It is also about the soon-to-be-opened Modern Art Gallery and Clothes Museum that promise to amaze you with an eclectic mix of old world charm and modernism. The strikingly modern, minimalist Art Gallery within the traditional Omani house is intended to showcase Omani and International modern artists to the world. It aims to host artistic exhibitions and workshops as well as other creative and cultural events. The Clothes Museum is based on a collection of traditional local and regional dresses from the past and present set off with modern international costumes. The museum plans to make it a prime centre for costume aesthetics and fashion creativity. For more information log on to www.ghalyasmuseum.com

The Museum of Natural History is located in the Ministry of Heritage and Culture building in Al Khuwair. Opened on December 20 1985, it is considered one of the major Omani museums and houses exhibits depicting aspects of life since it first appeared in various forms on the Sultanate territory. Some of the rare displays exhibited in this museum are traces of tree fossils found in Al Huquf dating back more than 260 million years, in addition to the remains of coral fossils dating back over 270 million years found in Wadi AsSahtan in Rustaq. The museum displays some aspects of the lives of the different types of reptiles, colourful butterflies, and other organisms that live in the wilds of the Sultanate, as well as the remains of trees and fossilised bones. INTERVIEW

AN ART-I-CULATE CONVERSATION

DEEPA RAJAN CHATS WITH MALIK AL HINAI, DIRECTOR – BAIT AL BARANDA, ON THE ART SCENE IN OMAN AND THE MAJESTIC MUSCAT PROJECT

M

alik Al Hinai needs no introduction. Today, he is as synonymous with art as frankincense is with Oman. Malik, who was in the hospitality industry, took up the challenge of turning a historical building near the Muttrah Corniche, which had been restored by the Muscat Municipality, into a thriving centre for art exhibitions, plus a museum about Muscat since the beginning of time. Today, Bait Al Baranda is full of tourists and children and is a well-known venue for the bustling art scene of Muscat. In a conversation with Signature, Malik talks about museums and art galleries, the Majestic Muscat project et al On museums and art galleries in Oman “I think that museums and art galleries play a major role in the society. Especially in Oman, we have come a long way in 40 years. We (Muscat Municipality) want to introduce events that are more modern and new. Yes we have got the traditions and culture but we have to move on from that. Youngsters are now more into gadgets and new technology and they travel more and know more. Keeping that

34

in mind, we decided we would introduce them to all that they relate to, through art. I believe Art has the ability to make you more humble and modest.” On must-visit museums “Bait Al Zubair is one of the major museums here as it has been there for a long time. They have a great variety of artefacts from the olden era. Then there is Ghalyas Museum of Modern Art, which provides an interesting insight into the Omani way of life. If you want to learn about nature and sciences, you should visit the national science museum in Al Khuwair. If you want to learn about the history of Muscat, you must visit Bait al Baranda as that’s where they show the history and civilization Oman progressing through the ages. Another good thing Bait Al Baranda is that it caters to school children as well, making it an interactive, fun learning experience. In the 45-50 minutes spent in the museum, the children learn something about the city. Hopefully, we will soon have the National Museum opening doors to the public. It’s going to be a phenomenal museum. It is being constructed opposite the Muscat Palace and is something I am looking forward to.” On beginnings of Majestic Muscat project “Muscat Municipality head HE Eng. Sultan

bin Hamdoon Al Harthi began the project four years ago and is an architect himself. He came up with new ideas for the project and perceived exactly how people would live in a modern society. We are modern and sophisticated. The city of Muscat has evolved so much that we thought we needed to bring in changes that would suit the modern Oman. For this very reason, we chose to bring in renowned architects from Europe, especially from Scandinavian countries, as they are known for being great architects and bringing in new topography that blends in and not stands out. Our aim is to make the city of Muscat not only the most beautiful city in the region, but also in the world. It’s a growing country and only by providing modern leisure facilities can we achieve our aim.” On his favourite projects “There are about 20 projects under the Majestic Muscat umbrella; both on a large and small scale. We are also taking into consideration the beautification of wadis and other barren areas. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be the Minaret (Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects A/S, Denmark) An awe-inspiring new monument, it exemplifies Oman’s Renaissance and will be constructed on the outermost point of the Muttrah Corniche. It is

termed as the ‘guiding light’. Another favourite is Hawiyat Najim Park project. It is one of the most exciting projects. This beautiful park has a series of circular oases made up of small shaded gardens. Buildings within the areas are also based on the circular theme. At the end of the park is a sink hole with an island in the middle and a bridge that allows access to the water for swimming and other activities. In the future, we plan to have a five-star hotel attached to it.” On inspiration from Banksy “Yes, we are looking at sculptures of items and things, but not people. We have to respect the cultural sensibilities of our nation and therefore we are looking at objects that represent our heritage or our daily life. We do not believe in graffiti art. Art should be done in a pleasant form that is appealing to the eye. No doubt graffiti looks good and is very creative, but this form of art is not something that would blend into our cultural fibre. Oman has more of an Arab influence in the ways our buildings and public places are constructed so we would want to keep in line with that. We will have open spaces for sculptures and objects of art that tell a story.”

GLOBAL EASEL

Contemporary Mixed media artist Joseph Klibansky on the must-see, must-experience art fairs in the world

RAW ART FAIR Rotterdam, The Netherlands RAW is the newest art fair in the city of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. This fair had its first edition this year in February and takes place simultaneously with the established Art Rotterdam and Object Rotterdam, which are also mustsee established fairs, which were very conceptual this year. The location was very special as the fair took place in a large bunker in the middle of the old port of Rotterdam, surrounded by steel and cranes, on the waterside. Especially worthwhile was the RAW EXPO, an exhibition on the top floor consisting of large sculptures and installations, very impressive. Young, fresh and different.

ART HONG KONG China I just returned from Hong Kong where I visited the fantastic Art Hong Kong, a mustsee venue for not only Asian contemporary art. It’s quite a large fair. It took me three days to see it all as they had two halls and three sections. It was nice to see big names in the art world, cutting-edge new artists and high quality Asian contemporary art, all in one fair. I personally loved the piece Perrotin showed from KAWS.

ART DUBAI Dubai Of course Art Dubai is also in my top five. For me as an artist it is very important to have my work seen all over the world. I am always curious how my work will be received in a completely different culture than my own. I think Art Dubai creates a high quality podium for galleries and artists to present their work to a nichĂŠ audience in the GCC region. I think it is also important for collectors from the region to experience the exciting dialogue between Western and Middle Eastern art in such close proximity.

TEFAF Maastricht, Netherlands One of the most important art fairs in the world is the TEFAF art fair, a.k.a ‘Maastricht’. This year was its 25th jubilee and was even visited by the Dutch Queen Beatrix! This fair is the complete opposite of what the RAW art fair has to offer. This fair is superchic and offers us a glimpse of the most important masters of the world. The galleries even hold pieces in depot, just to show them at Maastricht. The wealthiest collectors in the world fly in with their private jets to visit this art fair and collect the Masters of Art. You’ll find here Picassos and Rembrandts for over US$25 million. There is no such thing as ‘sticker-shock’ at TEFAF.

One of the youngest professional artists in the contemporary international art scene, Joseph’s work has often been described as ‘art with stopping power’. His points of departure are architecture and the city, particularly the accelerated, compressed and densely populated urban environments of the 21st Century. Joseph just turned 28 (not 31 as mentioned in our previous article). Among many other feathers in his cap, he is also the youngest artist to have his artwork ‘High Flyers’ auctioned at Sotheby’s last year (he was only 26) for Euros 35,000 (US$50.000,at the time), This was at the time, an international record amount ever paid for such a young, living artist. Joseph also has the rare distinction of joining famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami and Damien Hirst in designing the cover for a famous music artist or band. Joseph designed the cover for Armin van Buuren’s album Universal Religion (UR).

ART BASEL Basel, Switzerland The absolute must-see No. 1 fair for contemporary art in the world. This event carries a real energy that the whole art world can feel, for me it has a kind of excitement that a child would feel around Christmas. You just know something cool is going to happen but can’t put your finger on it just yet. I always discover an amazing artwork that really blows my mind at Basel. Brad Pitt is a big art collector and a regular guest at Art Basel.

SHAWN STEPHENS ON WHAT TO WEAR AT AN ART EVENT OR AUCTION OR EVEN A MUSEUM…

40

A

rt openings, visiting an art auction and museums can be momentous and fashionable occasions. Dressing for an event such as this can strike a bit of anxiety into even the most seasoned of event-goers. There are a few steps that can help you to dress for the event in a stylish and appropriate way without fail. Firstly determine where the art opening will be held. Large museums often hold more glamourous ceremonies for opening art shows, while smaller galleries typically host more relaxed events. Art auctions are places you can dress more chic and formal. Doing a little research about who will be at the art event will help. Are you friends with the artist? Do you know his friends or the type of patrons attending the event? These are questions that you need to answer before choosing an outfit. Go shopping to the nearest mall or log online to shop if you do not have appropriate clothing for the event. Or else just recycle what you have in your wardrobe to create a look that could be arty, chic and trendy as well. Art shows and auctions are often filled with other artists who have a flair for dramatic style or understated elegance. Ensure that you don't overdress or underdress. When in doubt go with a classic style that is neither too over-the-top nor too casual. Regardless of whether you are going to a hip contemporary art show or a showing of paintings by Picasso, dressing for an art opening should reflect your respect for the occasion. Give yourself a onceover in the mirror before leaving for the art opening. If you don't feel comfortable, don't wear it. The most important thing is for you to feel natural within the confines of the dress code. Wear a suit and tie for a more formal look. If you don't want to be too formal, a neutral or pale-coloured shirt with a nice jacket like a dark blazer, tailored suit jacket or tweed jacket should create the magic. Match your shirt with a pair of fitted wool slacks, or a nice pair of khakis or fitted dress pants. You want to look put together and not messy, so fit is key. If you need a belt, look for a simple leather belt in black or brown to go with your outfit. Dress in dark-coloured loafers or leather shoes with the rest of your look. Add in a conservative watch as a stylish accessory. Finish your look by styling your hair in a comfortable

way. Keep your facial hair well-groomed and neat. Don’t forget to incorporate trendy prints in with your tie and a dressy shirt. Mix fabrics such as a silk blazer and a dress shirt to create a formal, yet interesting, look. Coloured jeans in yellow, green, red or purple with a basic slim fit shirt and espadrilles accessorized with the right belt, scarf along with bracelets will look totally cool while toting your artist catalogues. To add a twist and complete the look in cooler months, one can also wear a chequered or coloured blazer on jeans. If one wants to be arty and incorporate some tradition and culture in their ensembles, sporting a Toby Thobe from the designer Hatem Alakeel or adorning a chic Indian sherwani will make all heads turn at any art event.

HOLLI ROGERS – FASHION DIRECTOR, NET-A-PORTER, COMES UP WITH FIVE

OUTFIT SUGGESTIONS THAT COULD MAKE YOU THE STAR OF ANY ART EVENT….

42

When choosing what to wear to an art event, try to have a bit of fun with your outfit while still staying appropriate to the occasion. Bold prints and bright colours are both key trends right now and perfect for the summer season. A formal evening event calls for a fabulous floor length gown. If it is a more contemporary crowd, you can opt for a knee-length style and strong silhouette. Here are my five outfit options: Erdem’s use of print and colour is incredible and the Ros printed silk georgette gown is certainly no exception. Pair with tan accessories to balance the pop of colour. Build your look around Aurelie Bidermann's oversized Mendoza necklace - a knee length dress in a colourful hue will perfectly offset this statement piece. Let your shoes do the talking with Nicholas Kirkwood's fringe suede sandals – pair with a fabulous printed dress from Emilio Pucci for highsummer chic. New to NET-A-PORTER, Vineet Bahl's handmade red and white stripe sequin dress is an amazing show of craftsmanship - keep it simple with black sandals and a colour-block clutch. Vera Wang’s bold printed silk blend gown is a real statement-making piece. Pair with gold accessories and a colour clash clutch to keep the look modern.

Bejewelled Elegance Gilan, a family-owned jewellery house, combines thousands of years of civilisation with a bold flair for the modern

44

The art of jewellery designing has evolved over the years; from the Gregorian period to the Victorian period or the period best known for its romanticism. Jewellery has always been a personal and unique expression of self and special moments. One fabulous jewellery accessory can transform a ho-hum outfit into something extraordinary and chic. Today there are innumerable jewellery brands, but there are only few that make it to the much

coveted jewellery boxes across the globe. One such brand that came into being exclusively for those who knew exactly the value and the essence of beautiful jewellery was the Turkish jewellery brand, Gilan. Every piece a masterpiece in itself, their creations speak a thousand words. Situated on the banks of the Bosphorus (poised at the crossroads of two great continents) Istanbul, queen of the cities, has been influenced by the fusion of east with the west and ancient with the modern. Fifth-century

Byzantine palaces stand alongside skyscrapers, while original Roman aqueducts arch over freeways. The city that has seen the rise and fall of three great empires is a striking symbol of progress built on a timeless foundation of more than 3,000 years of culture and craftsmanship. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Gilan was founded in 1980 in Istanbul, by brothers Muharrem and Ferhan Gilan, following in the design footsteps of their great

FOCUS

grandmother, head seamstress to the Ottoman Court. Their hereditary passion for design and luxury led the brothers to start a small jewellery store in Istanbul and to set the base of Gilan. Inspired by the heritage of Istanbul in jewellery making, they gathered a creative design team with the most skilled craftsmen, with the aim to create contemporary collections bringing the opulence of the Ottoman Court to the 21st century. They drew their inspirations from the Western magic and Eastern mystery of Istanbul and the

46

rich traditions of the Topkapi Palace in jewellery making. Today, Gilan is a well-known name in Haute Couture jewellery. In fact, many of the artisans that craft Gilan’s limited edition jewellery and objects d’art are descendants of the master jewellers the Sultans personally selected for their palaces. TOPKAPI PALACE In 1999, Gilan was granted the opportunity to sponsor the renovation of four rooms of the world-famous Topkapi Palace Treasury Hall

in Istanbul. This was the best way not only to express Gilan’s respect for the 3,000-year tradition of Turkish jewellery-making mastery, but also to ensure that this valuable heritage was preserved for future generations. Among these treasures, the spoon maker’s diamond, also known as the Kasikci, belonging to Napoleon’s mother is one of the prides of the Topkapi palace Museum. The rooms of the treasury hall were renovated and restored with jewels by the Gilan artisans and its sheer opulence glorified this beautiful palace.

Muharrem Gilan

TIMELESS DESIGNS Every year, Gilan creates new collections; each of them classic with a sophistication that enhances its design philosophy. BOSPHORUS DREAMS COLLECTION Where the magic of East amalgamates with the energy of West; Gilan pays homage to the duality of the great sea; its banks so different and yet flowing together in harmony. The diversity of cultures which spring from the interaction of two continents, the mutual respect and enchanting surprises that result from this are symbolised by the fresh combinations of different precious metals and stones. The unique jewellery creations bring to life the emotions of ever moving waters with exceptional craftsmanship and know-how.

COLORS OF EMOTION A shimmering journey into the colours of the city; Istanbul’s colours and passions, its magic and its secrets, its fables and its inspirations… With this new collection, Gilan takes us on a journey that travels through Istanbul’s magical fables and its glowing colours. The collection has four different themes that reflect stories of passionate loves of Istanbul in different colours. CINTEMANI COLLECTION Of Buddhist origin, this symbol is composed of three circles with two flowing lines. One of the most striking motifs in Ottoman Art, Cintemani is considered to be a symbol of power and strength; the three dots being compared to the leopard’s spots and the curving lines to a tiger’s markings. A tribute to ancient cultures, this motive is also an ode to modernity and femininity. A NEW BEGINNING As early as 2001, they opened their first international location in New York. From then on, Gilan designs have been discovered by jewellery connoisseurs and celebrities from around the world. A new chapter began in 2010 with the expansion of Gilan’s international presence. In addition to France (Megève, Courchevel, Saint Tropez) and Middle East (Bahrain), the luxury house is expanding its North American presence as well, debuting at select Saks Fifth Avenue locations in New York, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Palm Beach Gardens, Naples and at Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills. They are also settling in Bahrain, Paris, Saint Tropez and Courchevel. Gilan’s journey from Istanbul to international luxury cities may very well be a story made of dreams, but each Gilan creation is the sparkling result of hard work, passion and timeless values.

Star Sparkle

Capturing the attention of Hollywood for years, Gilan has continued to attract celebrity aficionados such as Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Selma Hayek and Lucy Liu and Jennifer Morrison. Be it an award function or a red carpet appearance , these celebrities have trusted creations from the brand and have never been disappointed. Recently, Sally Pressman, another Hollywood diva, opted to be adorned with creations from the house of Gilan for her wedding day.

The designers have created a ‘flower’, folding side hull panels that unfold, once the aft hull doors open. This exceptional feature allows the client to decide whether to have full privacy or full surrounding visibility. The area between the two deckhouses boasts two Jacuzzis and represents an oasis in the minimalist and sand-coloured deck. There are provisions for two separate areas. The aft area is dedicated to the family as well as guests, and the forward part is for the crew, thus creating maximum privacy for everyone onboard.

T

Starting forward the yacht’s tender can be lifted out on the recess of the deck, which can be converted into a dining/lounge area. On top of the main deckhouse a seating area can be found, together with the external control station for the yacht. Directly aft of the main deckhouse is a large cockpit. This can be used for dining or simply as another lounge area. In between the cockpit and the aft deckhouse is the private owner’s cockpit with secluded seating looking forward and interacting with the interior. There is also a seating area looking aft, open to the yacht’s surroundings. The interiors are as functional as the exteriors. Although the interiors are modern, they still evoke all the characteristics of the classic past. An interesting part of the 60m dhow by Van Geest is the sail plan, developed in collaboration with Formula Marine. It is easy to use and push-button-controlled. It was quite obvious that tracking is not that straight forward. To do this, the mizzen sails have to drop first, before the main boom can cross over. The intention is for the sails to furl in the booms and roll out when necessary. With a traditional sail plan, applying modern design and technology, the owner will be able to tack a dhow. Being low, this luxury sailing dhow can catch any breeze and the awnings will create maximum area of shades and the sails will give stability when on water.

EXPERIENCE

FOREVER READS

AUTHOR SUNAINA SERNA AHLUWALIA PICKS FIVE OF HER FAVOURITE BOOKS FOR US TO READ THIS HOLIDAY. ONCE YOU PICK THEM UP, YOU’LL NEVER PUT THEM DOWN, THOUGH! To give you an idea of what my love of reading did for me, I’m sharing an excerpt from my blog.“I lay curled up in a corner of the den, book in hand with just one table lamp on. Nothing else mattered except finishing that particular book. If I could help it, all in one go. Completely lost in a fantasy world, one where goblins, trolls, fairies, The Famous Five, Secret Seven and so many other fascinating characters resided.” This is what comes to mind when I think of myself -as far back in time as I can reach into the inner recesses of my mind. Did I learn something, did I grow as an individual, did I feel better about myself? All these were things that didn’t seem to matter then. But with the wisdom of passing time and years, I now know the answer. Yes I did, to all of them! Reading is undoubtedly a key factor in shaping one's mind and overall personality. And so, all I can say is encourage the younger generation to read and you will be doing the right thing for them. Forever and ever.”

it is hatched. When it finds the perfect thorn, it impales itself, and sings the most beautiful song ever heard as it dies.

GONE WITH THE WIND – MARGARET MITCHELL Scarlett O'Hara is the spoiled eldest daughter of a Georgia plantation owner at the beginning of the Civil War. Gone With the Wind is a classic story in the American culture. It was written over 70 years ago when Mitchell could still have interviewed people who lived through the war. She grew up in Atlanta, so was steeped in the post-Civil War Southern culture. The novel is long, but doesn't let the reader down. Because it was written before television, there are long descriptive passages of the countryside, the people, the fashions, and the other environmental aspects that give the background that brings the story to life.

So when asked to select five books that I’d recommend, this is what I’ve come up with, (in order of preference)

I first read the book over 20 years ago and many times thereafter. Each time, I’ve seen something newer and better than before. Gone With the Wind is not a quick read - it's over 1,000 pages long and gives all readers a great picture of Georgia and the Southern United States during the latter part of the 1800's.

THE THORN BIRDS – COLLEEN MCCULLOUGH

THE KITE RUNNER KHALED HOSSEINI

Top of my list would be The Thorn Birds. This epic saga begins with Meghann (Meggie) Cleary a four-year-old girl living in New Zealand in the early twentieth century, the only daughter of Paddy, an Irish farm labourer, and Fee, his harassed but aristocratic wife. Although Meggie is a beautiful child with curly red-gold hair, she receives little coddling and must struggle to hold her own against her numerous older brothers. Paddy is poor, but has a wealthy sister, Mary Carson, who lives in Australia on an enormous sheep station called Drogheda. One day, Paddy receives a letter from Mary offering him a job on her estate. He accepts, and the whole family moves to the Outback…

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable, beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. It is a novel about friendship, betrayal, and the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of their lies. Written against a history that has not been told in fiction before, this book describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But with the devastation, Khaled Hosseini also gives us hope: through the novel's faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows for redemption.

Taking us through some heart-rending twists and turns, the story ends on a poignant note and the reader is left with a distinct lump in the throat. The book's title refers to a mythical bird that searches for thorn trees from the day

REBECCA- DAPHNE DU MAURIER Working as a lady’s companion, the heroine of ‘Rebecca’ learns her place. Life begins to look very bleak until, on a trip to the South of France, she meets Maxim de Winter, a

handsome widower whose sudden proposal of marriage takes her by surprise. Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with ‘the other woman.’ An international bestseller that has never gone out of print, Du Maurier’s Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.

ROOTS – ALEX HALEY Billed as ‘the book that changed America’ Alex Haley's Roots is the monumental twocentury drama of Kunta Kinte and the six generations who came after him. By tracing back his own roots, Haley tells the story of 39 million Americans of African descent. He has rediscovered a rich cultural heritage that ultimately speaks to all races everywhere, for the story it tells is one of the most eloquent testimonials ever written to the indomitability of the human spirit. This is a book that moved me when I first read it as a student of Class nine and now as the mother of a grown up daughter, it still does!

PLACES

Blooming Marvellous Rebecca Jones experiences the magic of Jebel Akhdar Rose Harvest with The Guide Oman

A

sk a non-resident to describe the Middle East and invariably they’ll respond with imaginings of arid deserts and yet beyond the clouds in the green heights of Jebel Akhdar, lies a surprise to delight and entrance even the most reluctant gardener. For in the brief window of May, the villagers of Sayq begin their annual rose harvest in an abundant plantation, rising before dawn to gather flowers whilst the fragrance is at its most sublime. The promises of an extra-sensory extravaganza were tempting and so I joined The Guide Oman who arranged a bespoke itinerary, which

52

included a tour around a rosewater distillery and a walk through the plantation, building up to lunch in a hotel with a difference. Producing rosewater is an ancient tradition on Jebel Akhdar, thought to originate from the 17th century when Oman experienced influence from Persia, but, whatever its roots, remarkably the distillation process has barely changed over time and I was keen to experience it firsthand. On this trip The Guide Oman provided a charming and bubbly bunch of guides from Muscat, chauffeuring us in hardy yet comfortable jeep wranglers, an appropriate option to tackle the roads traversing up to our final destination at 2,300m above sea level. At the foot of the mountain, we noted that the

temperature gauge was a searing 40 degrees. However, soon after passing through the police checkpoint the temperature started to drop by approximately a degree every kilometre. Now that’s great news for a Norwegian girl like myself, who openly admits to loving extremes of cold rather than heat and happily, this trend continued until the thermometer dropped to 28 degrees, bliss. The instant reward for 12km of wiggling roads reminiscent of a snakes and ladders board and encountering endless hairpin bends, was a breathtaking vista back towards the ancient city of Nizwa, a former capital of Oman. The view was framed by rolling rock formations, gently waving their way back down into the depths.

Al Sahab lunch spot

Around the next bend, the vast canyon becomes apparent and while certainly greener than the lowlands, I was still wondered how this area would support the rich flower harvest promised. All became clear as we dropped into the village of Sayq and met our mountain guide Mohammed, a sprightly Jabali whose family have farmed in this temperate climate seemingly at the top of the world since time immemorial. Rising from the depths of the Sayq plateau floor grew a thick and luscious plantation. Against the barren, rocky sides the greenery was astoundingly verdant. Our first port of call was a traditional rosewater distillery. Once inside this building we experienced an instant snapshot of the past. As our eyes adjusted to the murky smoke lined walls of the cook house, we took in the equipment of a master distiller; the mud brick oven, woven baskets, clay pots and silver rosewater dispensers. Omani rosewater is often claimed to be the most sought after variety of rosewater, owing to huge demand from buyers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, so much so that the small harvest on Jebel Akhdar makes it difficult to match demand with supply and so it remains highly priced. The key to this lies in the use of charcoal in the distillation process, hence the smoky, slightly brackish colour offsetting the sweetly scented aroma. Rosewater is part of a long culinary history in

Oman, its delicate flavour enhancing halwa, kahwa and biryani dishes, but the benefits can also be sought in a medicinal sense; applied to soothe headaches and aching joints. The process itself is intricate and requires the utmost dedication to the task, using a whopping five kilogrammes of roses to produce 75ml, this is truly the amber nectar. By simmering the roses with water inside a clay pot over a charcoal fire for three hours, the steam is then trapped by a copper bowl filled with cold water and the condensation collected in a bowl floating on the surface of the simmering roses. After cooling and filtering out the sediment the liquid is then decanted into a clay storage pot for ninety days to mature. The owner of the rose distillery, Abdullah, is clearly proud of his heritage and obligingly answered all our questions through our guide. Although in Oman it often feels like life has rarely moved forwards beyond the limits of the larger towns and cities, it was a delight to see a successful family business in action, with perhaps the only change in production over the last century being the introduction of the Vimto bottle as a container for the product. Our appetites whetted, it was time to explore the heart of the plantation and walking through a myriad of ancient, shady passageways and listening to the chirpy sounds of village life, it became clear why many residents from across the Gulf are attracted to the area to escape the relentless heat of summer in the lowlands.

The sound of rushing water echoed in the basin as we followed the winding falaj into the depths of the plantation. This gentle walk drew surprising comparisons with the fruit growing regions of Italy and Spain. The bountiful pomegranate trees were loaded with red trumpet-like flowers that were seamlessly transforming into fruits, a truly spectacular sight. This fertile area is divided into family owned plots and only the limitations to the type of crop planted are set by the climate. In just five minutes we passed through trees bearing apricots, figs, walnuts, apples, pears, mangoes and papayas. Suddenly, an arresting fragrance wafted along the breeze and we knew we were close to the holy grail, the mountain rose. The pale pink variety of the Damask Rose is coverted for distillation, comprising of the most fragrantly and extravagantly frilled petals. A large bush can produce over 3,000 blooms in a season. Our senses were bombarded with colour, scent and the hum of bees going about their life’s work. This was definitely a moment to treasure in the fast approaching long, hot days of summer. With all our senses fully enlightened and a tremendous feeling of wellbeing, we jumped back into the jeeps to round off the afternoon with late lunch at the newest addition to hotel accommodation at the top of the Jebel, the Al Sahab Hotel. For a hotel in the early phases of opening and in such a remote location, all praise must go to the staff who looked after us royally and the chef who served up a western style lunch incorporating a choice of lamb or freshly caught hammour, mountain corn and fruits to satisfy our hunger cravings. The setting was quite beyond compare, not only because of the cleverly landscaped and fossil filled gardens but also because of its location at the lip of a magnificent canyon, overlooking terraced villages clinging to the steep slopes. Our trip ended with the opportunity to ponder over this breathtaking view from the tranquility of the swimming pool, so be sure to pack your swimmers! Zabid made it to the List in 2000 at the request of the State Party. According to UNESCO, 40 per cent of Zabid’s original houses have been replaced by concrete buildings. Zabid's domestic and military architecture and its urban plan make it an outstanding archaeological and historical site. Besides being the capital of Yemen from the 13th to the 15th century, the city played an important role in the Arab and Muslim world for many centuries because of its Islamic university.

HE’S THE MAN WHO PUT THE ZING INTO TEE-SHIRT SLOGANS! ROSEMIN MANJI TALKS TO BRITISH FASHION DESIGNER HENRY HOLLAND

A

fter graduating from the London College of Printing with a BA in Journalism, Henry Holland catapulted into the fashion limelight in 2006 with his irreverent 'Fashion Groupies' slogan tees featuring catchphrases such as "UHU Gareth Pugh" and "Get Your Freak On Giles Deacon". In February 2008, after two seasons showing with Fashion East, House of Holland held its first solo show on the main Fashion Week schedule to critical acclaim with the brand consequently winning the 'Best Use of Tartan Award' at the Scottish Fashion Awards. Henry designs with a London girl aesthetic in mind and is continually inspired by the variety of attitudes, cultures and mindsets that exist throughout the UK capital. The House of Holland girl is cool, confident and savvy and wears labels without letting them wear her. Firmly established in the international fashion scene, House of Holland now boasts an impressive roster of international premium stockists including Browns Focus, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Colette, Opening Ceremony and Barneys… Presenting excerpts of the interview… How did you get into designing? “My entry into designing was almost a happy accident. I began making tee-shirts for fun, but I soon realised that if I was to make the most out of the situation, then I had to expand and evolve very quickly!”

62

Rosemin Manji is the founder of RR & Co. Bespoke Luxury Management that specialises in styling, media relations among other luxury services around the fashion industry. Manji is an authority on fashion in the region. Her weekly fashion segment on Dubai One TV’s Studio One has fashion followers throughout the region tuning in as she shares her tips. She has brought international designers to the region from Tom Ford, Alice Temperley to Christian Louboutin to the Middle East . She has contributed in Harpers Bazaar, Grazia and Esquire and has covered Atlantis Palm Dubai opening Red Carpet interviewing top International celebrities for MTV. Manji’s style has been celebrated in Best Dressed lists for Harpers Bazaar, Grazia, Pashion, Mondanite, Ahlan Masala. Her contribution to the fashion industry has been recognised by Arab News as Top 20 Business women in the Gulf, Gr8 Women of the Year Middle East and Ahlan Hot 100 List 2010 and 2011 as Style Icon and Contribution to the Media Industry.

Was there a defining ‘ah-ha’ moment when you knew that you had made it? “I think if you start thinking you have ‘made it’ then it's over. I don’t think I will ever have made it as I will always have ambitions and dreams that are bigger than my reality!!” What challenges does an independent designer face? “Financing your company and the growth that you want to achieve. The fashion industry is outwardly very glamourous and exciting, but behind all of that we are all manufacturers trying to produce clothes and deliver!!” Your diffusion line (for Debenhams) is based on your runway collection or do you have another customer in mind? “Our line for Debenhams, H! by Henry Holland, is completely different from the main line collection. I would say that we are designing for a different customer and creating pieces that are more accessible to a wider audience. However the sensibility and humourous attitude to our collections is definitely something that permeates through.” You have been to Dubai a couple of times... what are your favourite spots? “I was so ill last time I came that I spent the entire time in bed being visited by the doctor! I did manage to attend the Christian Louboutin 20th anniversary party and check out Dubai Mall. I love the store ‘Sauce’.” What are your favourite spots in London? “I love Andrew Edmunds in Soho for a quiet dinner. Shoreditch House, The Albion and 'A Little Bit of What you Fancy" in Dlaston.”

What do you do on your downtime when you are not designing? “I just like to spend time with friends and family.” Do you have any muses or celebs, which you think have great personal style? “I draw inspiration from all the women in my life, some of them famous and some of them not so much. I think the clothes I design are for a fictional character that encapsulates all of these women!” Are you excited for the Olympics this summer? What are your favourite sports? “I am so excited. I think it is going to be an amazing time for London. I am especially looking forward to the Gymnastics, as I used to compete as one when I was a child. I’m also keen on diving and athletics.” What can we can expect from you in the near future? “We are launching our own line of House of Holland Eyewear in September which will be available worldwide."

The new Versace Home collection is a contemporary statement of Versace lifestyle, possessing a strong fashion influence. GOLF

TEE OFF

ALEX DAY, PGA HEAD PROFESSIONAL AT MUSCAT HILLS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, GIVES THE NON-GOLFERS SOME TIPS ON HOW TO BEGIN….

olf in the Sultanate is developing at a rapid rate and it has been great to see that participation levels amongst all demographics are matching this growth. There’s no doubt that the game of golf is a global one, and old stigmas of it being an elitist sport only played by old men are now being broken down. Some die hard golfers may even argue that the game is now in fact a cool sport to play! Whether it’s seeing Tiger Woods move his ball around a stunning landscape as if it’s on a piece of string, or listening to a work colleague rave about how they played their best 18 holes, every month in Muscat more people are deciding to take up the game.

G

However, for many folks, taking that first step in deciding to learn golf can often be a daunting one. Where/how do I learn? What to wear? Do I need special equipment? What are the rules? When can I start playing the course? Is it too expensive? To help ensure your introduction to the game is a simple and enjoyable one, it’s very much worth taking lessons from a PGA golf professional. Whilst there are no real shortcuts to mastering the game, it’s important to realize that reading 101 tips from websites, magazines etc might not necessarily be applicable to you.

72

For me learning golf can be divided into two separate elements ‘learning to swing’ and ‘learning to play’ the game. Learning to swing will enable you to advance the ball long and straight through the air towards your intended target (whilst hopefully being in balance and not looking like an octopus in a telephone box). Learning to play however introduces you to the finer skills within the game and knowing how to approach awkward scenarios (tackling a ball in long grass at hip height with water, bunkers and trees to negotiate). Both of these elements can be coached in a group format, and this for many is the preferred way to learn as it can be more fun and a social way of meeting new people. Alternatively if you wish to go a little more intensive and learn faster there’s the option of one-to-one tuition. Typically for an individual to learn the basic fundamentals of the game (to learn to swing) it takes 8 x 1 hour lessons. To then get to a stage where you’re ready to be let loose on the golf

course (learn to play) it’s often a case of taking a further 8 x 1 hour lessons. The group coaching packages at Muscat Hills take you through exactly this and cover every aspect of the game. It’s not only swing technique that is taught but also information surrounding, different formats of play, rules and etiquette, and the quirky terminology that golfers sometimes use to communicate.

as five, to men and women in their 80’s, and perhaps the greatest revelation for many who decide to take the game up is that development and progression is very much based on sound technique and not brute force or power. Indeed a phrase often used in golf is ‘Drive for show but putt for dough!’

In addition a PGA professional will be happy to offer practical advice on appropriate clothing & equipment. In the initial stages it’s simply a case of the beginner golfer just having a comfortable pair of flat shoes. If they then get a taste for it then they can be advised on the most suitable glove, pair of golf shoes and clubs (a very exciting time for many lady golfers!) It really doesn’t have to be expensive to give golf a go though.

The bottom line is that golf is accessible to all. Don’t be overwhelmed by the protocol of golf. The game has evolved like all things in life. If you wish to have a crack, visit a local PGA professional for a taster session to see if it may be for you. Recently my mother (admittedly unsporty) returned home to the UK after a trip to Muscat and to my great surprise decided to give golf a go at a local club. Even more to my surprise is that she went away from her taster session wanting more and said to me she now understands ‘why I’d become so obsessed by the game as a teenager’.

One of the great things about golf is that it is a sport that can be played by children as young

Hopefully you’ll catch the bug and start a journey that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

CARS

- ss pe oc rc Du e S hp To T MEET FERRARI’S NEW 458 SPIDER, THE WORLD’S FIRST MID-REAR ENGINED BERLINETTA EQUIPPED WITH A RETRACTABLE HARD TOP 74

F

errari is no stranger to drop-top excitement. And with the stellar success of its incredible 458 Italia, it was only a matter of time before we laid our eyes on a Spider. Well, that time has now come and what a sight it was to behold. The idea of a mid-engined cabriolet isn’t something new to Ferrari, but the 458 Spider is a bit more special than that. It is the world’s first mid-rear-engined berlinetta equipped with a retractable hard top.

From the front there isn’t much to distinguish it from the coupe but the rear of the car has been completely redesigned. Entirely in aluminium, the hard-top solution adopted for the 458 Spider is made of two sections that hold so as to take very little space and without raising the line of the rear deck. It offers a number of advantages over the traditional folding soft-top. For starters, it significantly improves in-car comfort when closed as it completely insulates occupants from both weather and noise. Also unlike the soft top, it doesn’t deform because of the pressure field that builds up at high speeds. Cabin space is also improved thanks to the roof’s double curvature. This was made possible thanks to its aluminium construction and would not be possible with a traditional soft top. Generally, hard top mechanisms are heavier than their soft top counterparts. But in the case of the 458, the simple mechanism actually weighs about 25kg less than a fabric version. Just as impressive is its deployment time of just 14 seconds. The way in which it folds is also ingenious. The two panels rotate rearwards seperately through 180 degrees, one on top of each other, thus reducing bulk to a minimum. It is similar to the 599 Superamerica we saw a couple of years ago. Once the top has completely folded down, the rear windscreen raises automatically to about a third of its maximum height, thus acting as a wind stop to reduce cabin turbulence and improve the comfort of open-top motoring. Furthermore, the small space needed to house the roof also enabled the designers to include a generous rear bench for luggage behind the seats. The main aerodynamic problem the designers faced is the lack of a rear windscreen to direct and channel airflow to the rear spoiler to create downforce. Thus the styling work focused on two key components the buttress and engine cover. Their forms are designed to effectively tackle the turbulence normally generated by Spiders. The buttresses act as roll-bars. Unlike its predecessor, the 430, the passenger protection and reinforcement structure are now a part of the buttresses. Furthermore their tapered forms effectively channel air towards the rear radiators. The rear scoops are also significantly larger than those of the coupe and aside from the radiators; they also channel air into the engine intakes. For maximum comfort whilst driving top down the 458 Spider features a generouslysized adjustable electric wind stop. The design was perfected to slow and diffuse the air in the cockpit, enabling normal conversation to be held even at speeds over 200 km/h. Unfortunately, the buttresses and new engine cover means that the engine is no longer visible through a glass panel. However, the 458 Spider is still powered by Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated, direct-injection 4.5 litre V8. The very same engine that was nominated as the 2011 International Engine of the Year for its engineering excellence in terms of driveability, performance, economy and refinement. The power is transferred to the road by Ferrari’s class-leading dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission through the sophisticated E-Diff, itself integrated with the F1-Tractraction control and high-performance ABS for maximum handling dynamics.

Certain of the car’s features, such as its accelerator pedal mapping and the damping of the multilink suspension, have been calibrated to guarantee maximum sportiness and absolute driving pleasure with the top down, in line with Maranello’s exclusive spider tradition. Even the engine soundtrack has been honed to ensure that the car’s occupants are completely captivated by the drop-top driving experience. New technical solutions adopted for the chassis guarantee identical levels of structural rigidity with the roof up or down. The result is a car that is truly exciting to drive, blending extreme performance with the responsiveness that has always characterised a Ferrari.

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS DANIEL SERPA, RESIDENT FITNESS INSTRUCTOR AT SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY, SAYS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN ANY FITNESS PROGRAMME IS CONFIDENCE, SUPPORT AND DEDICATION

With summer work out schedules a dime-adozen, take a few moments to learn a little more about an industry favorite: functional fitness. An application of exercises intended to increase the body’s natural ability to perform day-today activities; functional fitness strengthens consistently across the body. A modern catchphrase for classic methods, humans have been practicing functional fitness since we stood upright. Nomadic lifestyles of perpetual hunting and gathering kept the body fit through daily conditioning. As tribes and civilizations established roots, permanent farms emerged, along with the 14-hour working

76

day; toiling before sunrise and after sunset with hard labor that left the farm boy down the road with exceptional bicep definition. Humans progressed, increasingly sedentary and abandoning arduous movement for rolling chairs and wrist-breaking typing jobs. Even the amount of physical activity encouraged in the youth at school has drastically decreased, replaced by computerized lessons and rewards on Xbox. The movement (no pun intended) of functional fitness aims to recondition our deskbound bodies into healthy, model citizens. We strengthen the body through the most important section: the core. These muscles control our posture, and proper posture is fundamental to a healthy body.

It connects the circulatory, digestive, nervous and muscular systems, keeping us naturally energetic. When we sit too much, our core loosens and our posture collapses. Sounds familiar, does it not? Every day we move closer to our computer screens, enveloping the keyboard like a lioness hoarding her cub’s meal. Our shoulders roll inward, our spine curves like a candy cane and our neck emulates a turtle, only without the resolve and purpose of hiding in a shell. Some of us are more worse for wear, hence the reason that a functional fitness routine is bespoke and offered with the guidance from professionals.

I prefer to work without machines and only use free weights if the body cannot sustain working with its own weight. Resistance bands, medicine balls and mat exercises should be expected. I also recommend working out in the morning because our neuro-physiological fuse is still closed and better results can be expected. Understanding that not all of us are great morning people, he affirms that if a different time of the day ensures commitment, then go with your body’s flow! Guests subscribe to functional fitness routine for any of three different reasons: losing weight; maintaining weight and gaining muscle. The most common subscribers are hoping to lose weight, and in which case you need to realise that results take time. The phrase, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” comes to mind. The goal is reconditioning of the entire body, and most of us will lose weight the opposite way we put it on; from the outer to the inner sections of the body. How ironic, then, that much of a functional fitness program will focus on the core muscles. Weight loss plans will mainly involve cardio, keeping the heartbeat elevated and intermingling two to three sets at 15 repetitions of

exercises that have been tailored for you. Circuit training is heavily used, such as the Jungle Gym at Six Senses Zighy Bay, an outdoor training circuit that uses parts of the natural environment to build a boot camp-style exercise track. When you finish with exercising, be sure to amplify the hard work you’ve put yourself through with the proper nutrition. Aim for six to seven meals per day, starting with a hefty, nutritious breakfast and reducing the size of the meals throughout the day. Think high in protein, like lean poultry and fish and eat vegetables or fruit at the beginning of a meal to cut down on your appetite.” Contrary to some experts, the high amount of natural sugar in fruits can actually help your weight loss, if consumed earlier in the day. Avoid natural (and the obvious high fructose) at night. The key to success in any fitness programme is confidence, support and dedication. Your functional fitness program can do what you wish: trim around the waist, add definition to your upper body or even keep you ready for the zombie apocalypse. Take a lesson and stick with it! (As told to Monica Majors)

Daniel Serpa works with Six Senses Spa guests in private and group sessions including lessons on the resort’s outdoor training circuit; the Jungle Gym. From Portugal and fluent in English and Spanish, Daniel holds a degree in Sports Sciences – Exercises and Health. Describing his style of training as “hands-on, supportive, and utilising a guest’s body weight as the core of any workout,” Daniel often works with resistance tools, balance balls and mats.

IN SEARCH OF A PERFECT HOME André C. Meyerhans goes Ithaca-hunting with his friends…

Last month, I assisted some people in find their new home. I only joined midway of their already tiresome odyssey. Locating a new place to live proves to be a challenging endeavour … unless there is some structure in place! DEFINE YOUR REQUIREMENTS The most important thing was to define the requirements and basic parameters. In the above case, the family comprised of the parents and a little boy, but they were planning to add to the family. The woman worked from home. A live-in maid was not wanted, but maybe needed at a later stage. She was an urban type yet liked to have a more rural environment for her child. While commuting distance to work did not matter to the husband. The new home needed to be spacious enough to be able to host business dinners. Their time horizon was a five-year rental. This led to the following requirements: three or four bedroom unit in order to cater for the growth of family as well as, have a home office space. The maid's room was optional and could be used as storage when needed. We identified two districts in the town, one urban and one villa compound – both fitting the socio-cultural expectations of the family. Their budget determined the maximal annual

78

rent – for the purpose of the search, we reduced it by 15 per cent. This left some flexibility as one always comes across properties above the indicated budget. After a crosscheck in the local newspaper, the figure seemed to be in a reasonable area for what we were looking. NARROW IT DOWN The next step was to define the actual property in order to be specific when interacting with a third party. Again, I would like to illustrate it in the example above: Proximity to a grocery store as well as a coffee shop was important for convenience. The family disregarded considerations of public transportation, but followed my advice to consider guest parking as well as accessibility to and fro the compound during rush hours. They wanted to have a large balcony or a small, low-maintenance garden – all with a nice, undisturbed view. Also a spacious living/dining was a must. The couple was not very particular about amenities except for the security aspect. Due to solar gain, we wanted the unit to be orientated towards the North with large windows to give it a modern and open feel. They preferred to have the main road on the other side to minimise the noise impact. (If you look for accommodation in a high rise, you might

One should pay special attention to the following three things when visiting an object: layout, fit-out as well as view. The point of the view explains itself: a nice view has its price!

wish to reflect on the preferred height: if you opt for lower floors, you must be ready for more noise pollution, whereas if you opt for any of the top floors, you can be detached from the world and at the same time get a better view and air circulation.) This specification narrowed our search down to a few buildings or areas which we could identify from the road. HUNT! While the exterior of a building might give you a rough understanding on how the interior looks and how the unit is organised, there is no way around visiting the place personally – preferably during different times of the day. One should pay special attention to the following three things when visiting an apartment or villa: layout, fit-out, and the view (remember, a nice view has its price) When it comes to the fit-out, things come down to individual tastes. Quality, however, lies beyond taste. A through Due Diligence investigation is needed to record and classify all elements accordingly. The report can be conducted by a layman or an appointed specialist and should

be part of the rental or purchase agreement. Remember, this document might come in handy for any negotiation or dispute! Most people look at the area and divide it by cost in order to have a comparable dimension. Unfortunately, this is not too helpful for the user because of two reasons: a) residents only care about the usable space, which is called net or carpet area. The developer, however, often publishes the gross area as this is the figure relevant to his business. Furthermore, it lets the unit appear bigger than it actually is: the gross area includes the walls which account for approximately 20 per cent of the square metre indicated. And b) an inefficient layout leaves a lot of dead or useless space. Large corridors, oddly-shaped rooms and disproportionate service areas add square metres but no quality of life! Open floor plans and structural windows with distant views, on the other hand, make a small place appear spacious. Well, “my” family has selected their new place and are about to sign the contract. They have finally found their Ithaca! I hope these tips help you find yours too!
