Everything is a luxury in life, starting with being in this world. As Signature turns four, we have a lot to celebrate. And, sometimes, pictures in black and white can speak a thousand words too.

For it’s the larger picture that really matters. They can be as vivid, striking and defining without different shades or hues. Black & White is all about nostalgia, playful contrasts, resilience, symbols and strong characters. And that’s why our Anniversary issue is a tribute to different aspects that have changed the way we look at life…

EVENTS

DATELINE FIVE EVENTS IN THE MODERN AGE THAT WE THINK HAVE MADE A CONSIDERABLE IMPACT ON OUR LIVES

6

WorldWideWeb is born

1991 Very few of us are really aware that at 2:56:20 pm, August 6, 1991, our world changed in a way that is still very difficult to quantify. It was at this moment in time that the computer of British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, logged onto the world’s first ever website (http://info.cern.ch), beginning the process of evolution to where we find ourselves today. Berners-Lee created the possibility of a system where information was available for everyone, where we didn’t have to be scientists or programmers to get the rewards. Perhaps more than any invention in the history of mankind, the ‘world wide web’ gives something to everyone. It has gone onto change how we think, do business, entertain ourselves, and live. The Internet would likely not be the same entity we have today, were it not for Berners-Lee’s and other scientists work at CERN more than two decades ago.

9/11 Tragedy

2001

These tragic attacks in September 2001 changed many things. In a literal sense, it wiped out nearly three thousand people at the World Trade Centre in New York, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The iconic skyline of the great American city was similarly scarred. It was however what it spawned that affected us more as two horrific wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began; and terrorist attacks in Madrid, London, Mumbai, Bali and elsewhere shattered any illusion of safety and security. Civil liberties have been eroded, monitoring of citizens' communications and a Big Brother society have become commonplace. Words have been created to justify actions, such as ‘rendition’ and ‘black sites’, and two cultures who had spent centuries coming closer together since the middle ages, fell further apart.

8

2003

Mapping of the Human Genome This massive project began in 1990, aimed at mapping out the human sequencing of human genes that make up our DNA. This is basically a formula, or schematic, of how we are made and potentially, a wealth of insights into how mankind might tackle a range of diseases that continue to afflict the species. By the end of 2003, scientists from around the world had determined that there were about 23,000 genes in human beings, which is around the same number as the total found in the common mouse. With specific genes now identified, doctors and medical researchers can now be much more specific in tackling degenerative conditions and diseases, often to the point of specifying exactly which gene the problem is in. Although very much in the early stages in compiling all the data, this medical breakthrough looks set to change our view of care for generations to come.

2007-2008

Credit Crunch

A great presumption befell most developed economies during the early stages of the 21st century, a paradigm of economic thought that says where there is a boom, there will be a bust. Perhaps caught up in superiority complex of fiscal gambling, people, banks, hedge funds and governments all played with fire, fully expectant that they would not be the ones to get burned. Then someone, somewhere, began to call in the debts, and everyone suddenly realized that they didn’t have the money to pay. This collapse in lending confidence brought about the Global Financial Crisis, a disaster with no parallel in its reach, thanks to the interconnected nature of the world’s markets. As we moved into 2012, many countries are still feeling the effects, with productivity down, high unemployment and austerity drives forcing living standards back to where they were a decade ago.

Japanese Tsunami

After the first anniversary of what is known as the Great Tohoku earthquake, but commonly referred to as the Japanese Tsunami, a few facts outside of the human suffering have the capacity to remind us exactly how small and vulnerable we are. Despite our advances, our first faltering steps into space, our great science and intellect, humans are still at the whim of nature. The earthquake shortened the day by 1.8 microseconds. It also shifted the Earth's axis by about 6.5 inches and appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8ft (2.4m).

Your first impressions of Oman It is a magnificently elegant way of life. The discretion with which business is carried forth. The most striking architectural feature of the country I have the pleasure of working in the Royal Opera House Muscat, which is striking for so many reasons, including its modern Islamic architecture, fine and rich materials, and iconic design. 20

Your first impressions of Oman I’ve been in Oman for quite a while now but when I try to recall how I felt during my initial days in Oman, I remember my experience to be pleasant right from the start and the beautiful scenery made everything worthwhile. Since Grand Hyatt is located right next to the great Arabian Sea, I am always taken away by the striking Hajar Mountains surrounding the hotel. The most striking architectural feature of the country The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is no doubt the most beautifully designed mosque I have seen. The architecture of the mosque portrays rich Arab heritage and tradition. What also fascinates me is the beauty of the Royal Opera House Muscat. That has become an icon in the Middle East and is a landmark for a fusion of Arab and Western theatrical performances.

DAVID TODD GENERAL MANAGER – INTERCONTINENTAL MUSCAT AND DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS OMAN, INTERCONTINENTAL HOTELS GROUP Your first impressions of Oman This is my second stint in Oman. I was previously the Resident Manager of the Al Bustan Palace hotel. I still remember being collected from the airport and travelling through the Muttrah area and seeing the palace and going through the village to finally get inside the Al Bustan Palace. My journey was absolutely breathtaking. So to come back here, it has been extremely comforting in a way. There’s a familiarity there. The most striking architectural feature about this country What I love about Omani architecture is the way it stays true to its heritage, the way it’s not trying to be modern, the architecture is a natural progression and it makes sense, it works. I admire the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and now the Royal Opera House Muscat. Adventure hotspot you love visiting or would like to visit My most favourite weekend destination used to be Wahiba Sands. I also used to go quite often to Sifa further along the coastline to the pebbly shell beach. This time though I think I’m going to be more adventurous and further afield. Your favourite dining spot My wife is vegetarian so one of our favourite hotspots is Kamat. Other places I used to dine, apart from restaurants in InterContinental Muscat, was the balcony of Crowne Plaza Muscat. The most enduring Omani Symbol I think it’s the smile of the Omani people. These broad smiles are the reason I would say there’s so much warmth here. Oman stands apart because… I think Oman stands apart because it believes in itself. It’s not trying to copy anyone else. It’s true to its history and heritage. It focuses on its people. And of course it’s liberal and open to other cultures and ideas. Not many countries have that. Your vision for Oman in the future I’m in the hospitality industry so my aim is to work along with Oman’s 2020 vision and deliver world class hotels that can provide consistent quality of service. The InterContinental Muscat is 35 this year and this is the first five-star hotel in Oman and it continues to be a heart of Muscat, I want to maintain that and make sure it continues to remain relevant to work with the community and grow our portfolio brands here.

Here, timeless traditions echo through everyday life as people take advantage of modern conveniences such as mobile phones and luxury cars whilst still observing the peace and prosperity of the country’s traditions. The vast opportunity Oman provides to its people, both men and women, is truly unique to this region too. Your dreams for Oman’s future Oman is, no doubt, on a road to a bright future, with numerous accomplishments in key areas of focus such as health care, education and the development of tourism. With the various landscapes in the region, I believe that Oman possesses a great opportunity to establish further developments outside the capital in order to showcase our potential.

Oman through your eyes... Oman is a beautiful country, an imperfect country. At times, a deeply frustrating country… Oman is my country. Most importantly, Oman is home.

HUSSAIN AHMED MOHSIN DIRECTOR, AHMED MOHSIN TRADING LLC

The most striking architectural feature of the country I’d have to say the Muttrah Fort. It’s a landmark that has stood proud since the 16th century and has become a staple in many pictures depicting the natural beauty of Oman and the historical significance of Muscat. Adventure hotspot in Oman you have visited or want to visit Going up the mountain in Polaris buggies to Majlis Al-Jinn was an adventure that I will not forget for a long time. The views going up were breathtaking, the road treacherous, all worth it to reach one of the largest cave chambers in the world. Your favourite dining spot in Oman Hands down, it has to be Sultanah, Shangri La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa for its exquisite food and exemplary service. Not to mention, one of the best views in Oman. Most endearing Omani symbol The Omani Khanjar and intersecting swords are a symbol that exemplify Oman’s rich history, the determination of its people and its wise leader His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. Oman stands apart because… Its diverse topography and its unique environment are heaven for the adventurous ones. It’s a country rich with history and one that hasn’t abandoned its culture in the name of modernisation. The kind hearted people are the icing on the cake. Your dreams for Oman's future Further economic progress and political stability and a society that continues to build on the strength in unity of its people.

Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort is in a league of its own it terms of architecture. Adventure hotspot in Oman you have visited or want to visit I drove to Jebel Al Shams (Omani Grand Canyon!) in 4X4s with some of my friends. Your first impressions of Oman Oman is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever lived in as it is full of character, charm and colour. At Nawras, we love Oman’s lively colours so much that they are vibrantly reflected in our logo! The most striking architectural feature of the country The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is an iconic architectural landmark. The elegant lines, colours and use of calligraphy throughout are breathtaking. Overall the craftsmanship is stunning. Many of my family and visitors leave marveling at the quality as well as at the aura of peace and tranquility.

ROSS CORMACK CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NAWRAS

Adventure hotspot in Oman you have visited or want to visit Al Sharqiya Sands are amazing. I have been there numerous times both off-roading and for strategy brainstorming away days with my colleagues at Nawras. We really benefit from being away from the office, in a completely different atmosphere – and of course temperature! Getting back to our roots gives us a lot of inspiration. Your favorite dining spot in Oman I have thoroughly enjoyed every meal I have had to date across the country from Sohar down to Salalah. My favourite dining spot was outdoors in the wild by the frankincense trees in Salalah with the locals, friends and family. The people of Oman make every meal special wherever it may be. Most endearing Omani symbol I could say the Khanjar, Al Boom, the Mussar – but for me the Kummah represents Oman. I take a great deal of interest in following the trends or fashion that are inspired by the Kummah. The colours and intricate patterns depict many stories and a rich tradition that is passed from one generation to another. At Nawras we are now bringing some of the patterns into our branding and they are making our colours come to life! Oman stands apart because…. Culture, style, elegance and above all friends. Omanis have the ability to maintain friendships no matter what is happening in the world and I believe that is the one most important element of the Omani culture that has to be retained and cherished. Your dreams for Oman’s future … For Oman to be the most communicating and technologically advanced nation in the Arab world while preserving its true and unique culture and heritage. Above all, to drive safely on the streets of Oman.

It is emerging as one of the fastest growing economies in the region with multi-cultural diversities and populated by many different nationalities. It is therefore no wonder that Oman is being touted as the major Tourist Hub of Arabia. The most striking architectural feature of the country Al Alam Palace, Muscat old town and corniche are my favourites. They truly capture the historic architecture Capital of Muscat as it once was. The Al Bustan Palace hotel can also be cited as a good example as it combines the traditional and modern architecture. Adventure hotspot in Oman you have visited /want to visit Wadi Sh’aab and the Sinkhole are my favourite adventure hotspots.

Left Bank in Qurum and Trader Vic's, located in InterContintinental Muscat, are also my favourites. Most endearing Omani symbol The Omani Khanjar symbolises the bravery of the people while at the same time is proof of the traditional craftsmanship. Oman stands apart because… Apart from its unique culture, natural beauty and deep history, its pollution-free clean environment, which is really wonderful. Your dreams for Oman’s future I would love to see Oman developing its infrastructure towards providing economical public transport, which will enable people to explore the country.

ST. JOHN KELLIHER GENERAL MANAGER, ALMOUJ GOLF

Your first impressions of Oman I was impressed with how I was able to feel and touch Oman as soon as I arrived here. It was such a humbling experience, I cannot imagine choosing another destination to live, work or visit The most striking architectural feature of the country The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque stands out with its amazing dome and chandeliers. Another aspect of the Grand Mosque is the true journey one experiences by simply observing the various tiles and mosaics that are magnificently displayed and tell the story the development of the Islamic era. Adventure hotspot you have visited/want to visit Having grown up in Ireland and close to the sea, Oman is paradise to me. I invested in a small boat and used it whenever I can, whether it was to fish, dive or snorkel. The beauty of Oman is that this can all be done in the same day and if you throw a tent on board, you can even stay overnight on your very own private beach. With that being said, Bandar Khairan is a must for me as it is only a 45 minute journey by boat. This is my haven. Your favorite dining spot Bait Al Turki, a seafood restaurant in Al Khuwair. Fresh fish at its finest, full of Omanis, this restaurant does over 1000 meals a day! It is affordable, the bread, fish and mezzes are delicious. If you have been there you will understand my choice and if you are yet to try it out, you can look forward to the best Omani seafood meal you will ever have. Not many people eat meat at this restaurant, but there is a great chicken dish, just ask Hector, the headwaiter and he will help you. Most endearing Omani symbol The symbol that is synonymous with the Sultanate is the Omani Khanjar that is recognised as a symbol of pride and ownership. Of course, the other is the Frankincense Burner in Al Riyam Park signifying Oman’s strong connection to frankincense. Oman stands apart because…. The inclusion of Omanis in all walks of life and being prepared to work in all kind of jobs for the betterment of the country and economy makes the country distinct. With that being said, Oman never needed to create a new Oman, it stood apart because it chose to preserve the old Oman. As a result, it inspired its future from its past.” Your dreams for Oman’s future... To stay on the same road that has been planned and executed so far. The next generation of tourists and travelers will want to experience nature, culture and heritage and Oman has it all.

Your first impressions of Oman Its authenticity and how it delights visitors and residents with the beauty of the landscape, hospitality, as well as richness of heritage, traditions and culture. The most striking architectural feature of the country The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the forts. Of course, Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel – a historical landmark and many would consider it as a representative of Omani contemporary architectural feature. Adventure hotspot in Oman you have visited or want to visit Oman provides a fascinating getaway with a lot activities to choose from. I’m eager to visit Wahiba Sands. I have seen many pictures of endless miles of dunes and the gradation of colour. It is truly captivating.

TAWFIK MOKHTAR DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING OF AL BUSTAN PALACE, A RITZ-CARLTON HOTEL

Your favourite dining spot in Oman Turkish House is my favourite place for family, lunch or dinner. Most endearing Omani symbol The Omani custom, how attractive and unique and how great to see a nation so proud of their national custom. I am overwhelmed with the warm hospitality. Oman stands apart because…. It offers an authentic Arabian experience that’s not easily available in the region. Again I would like to emphasise on the warm hospitality here. I believe your readers would agree with me that the people of Oman are regarded as some of the most friendly and hospitable in the Middle East. Your dreams for Oman’s future I would like to see Oman in a leading position in the travel market and in the worldwide traveller’s agenda. Not only it offers authentic Arabian experience, it also provides a fascinating getaway with a range of outdoor activities to choose from, making it ideal for incentive or team building exercise.

Alexander McQueen was one of the few designers who managed to create real emotions though his collection - his ability to represent strength or vulnerability though his fashion shows are legendary. He founded the Alexander McQueen luxury brand that recently created the breathtaking gown for Kate Middleton (a pity he was not alive to revel in the glory). McQueen had a certain je nes se quoi that will always put him in a class apart, as designer who brought drama and extravagance to the catwalk.

Popularly considered the ‘Picasso of India’ MF Husain was a revolutionary figure when it came to art. His paintings were unique – sometimes funny and sometimes sombre. Topics ranged from Mother Teresa to the Mahabharata. His works, like him, were brilliant, creative and sadly misunderstood. Although he may be a highly unappreciated artist of his time, Husain continues to live on though his thoughtprovoking, vivid art.

KANEBO Why are the hands of Japan's silk spinners so beautiful? It was this intriguing question that led SENSAI to unlock the secret of Koishimaru Silk. Originally reserved for the exclusive use of the imperial family, this silk of silks turned out to hold the power to beautify the skin. Deeply hydrating and able to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid, Koishimaru Silk surrounds skin cells in an ‘Endless Ocean of Moisture’. Bathed within this life-giving environment, the skin is restored to health and profoundly moisturised. PRIME SOLUTION combines the exceptional power of Koishimaru Silk with unique and state-of-the-art skincare technology from SENSAI that can dramatically enhance intercellular communication. Deep within our skin, cells send and receive vital information concerning environmental changes and potential sources of damage, encouraging each other to constantly reproduce and repair the skin. Yet as we age, their responsiveness to these signals diminishes, reducing skin's ability to quickly repair itself. Formulated with Sanzashi (hawthorn) Extract, which can reactivate cellular receptivity, PRIME SOLUTION can help reawaken and revitalise ageing skin cells. The skin appears smoother and rmer, and is better able to respond to the positive signals sent by subsequent anti-ageing skincare products. By combining the power of tradition with the latest skincare technologies, SENSAI has created a new generation of anti-ageing skincare treatments. Lead a life of beauty. With SENSAI. (Available at Capital Store, Qurum, Salam Studio & Stores, Qurum, Areej Muscat and Muscat Pharmacy (Perfumes & Cosmetics), Jawaharat A’Shatti and Sahwa Towers.)

Harissa

Found on every table in Morocco, this fiery paste will take your breath away and should be used with caution. Dried chillies are mixed with cumin and caraway seeds adding complexity to its flavour. Simply swirled in at the end of cooking, Harissa is the perfect seasoning for adding depth and character to sauces and dressings, particularly mayonnaise, hollandaise, vinaigrettes and flavoured butters; and to stews, soups, pasta and risotto. It can also be used as an accompaniment to couscous, rice, tagines, grills, roasts and if you are brave, in sandwiches.

Ras El Hanout

This is the legendary North African spice mix, which loosely translates as 'house blend'. Cooks from Tunisia to Morocco swear by their own Ras el Hanout blends, which can include up to 30 ingredients—even rose buds and the infamous Spanish fly (a powdered beetle rumoured to be an aphrodisiac). Ras el Hanout is especially good as a marinade for poultry and vegetables. For a simple marinade crush a small clove of garlic with a teaspoon of sea salt and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Ras el Hanout and half a cup of olive oil. Ras el Hanout can also be used in soups and tagines; after sauteing onions and garlic, add the spice mix and cook before adding meat, vegetables and stock. It can also be mixed with flour and used as a dusting when grilling, roasting or frying. Add a teaspoon to rice or couscous for further flavour.

108

Za'atar

Za'atar is the Arabic word for wild thyme and for the spice mix made with thyme, roasted sesame seeds and the ground sour berries of the sumac tree. This blend includes dry roasted cumin seeds making it the perfect seasoning for roasting meat or poultry; simply mix with good olive oil and use as a rub. It can be sprinkled into salads and used as a garnish. Brush Middle Eastern flatbread with olive oil, sprinkle with Za'atar and lightly grill.

PRESERVED LEMONS WITH HONEY Preserving lemons in salt adds complex spicy tones to their sourness. The addition of honey and sweet spices gives further depth and sweetness. Preserved Lemons are perfect for adding piquancy to tagines, braises, salads, dressings, mayonnaise, flavoured butters and hollandaise sauce (Use only the rind of the preserved lemons and discard the flesh).

110

CHERMOULA

Chermoula is one of the signature dishes of North Africa and is most often used as fragrant marinade for seafood dishes and also works well with poultry and meat. The predominant flavours are garlic, cumin, paprika, coriander, lemon and chilli. Use as a marinade or rub on roasting joints. Add to a stir fry, tagine or stew; after sautĂŠing onions and garlic, add the spice mix and cook gently (high heat will burn it) before adding meat, vegetables or stock. You can store it for a long time in your fridge ready for the BBQ.

ARCHITECTURE

SHAPING SKYLINES Andre C Meyerhans picks his favourites among the iconic structures that have shaped the skyline of the Middle East…

The other day, I was asked which five buildings changed the skyline of the Middle East in modern times? In an instant, I had numerous buildings in my mind which seemed to deserve to top this list. In the following discussion the question turned out to be much more complex. What does it mean to change the skyline? Is it just a building that visually dominates the urban ensemble or is it a building powerful enough to convey a cultural statement to others? We had this conversation in Dubai and debated about whether Burj Al Arab or Burj Khalifa influenced the skyline of Dubai more. Undoubtedly, the world’s tallest building peaks much further into the clouds than any other building in town, and yes, it hosts the most elevated restaurant and viewing platform in the world. Yet, I am not convinced to attest it to have changed the skyline of Dubai the most. In a nutshell, it is because A) Any superlative today is average tomorrow – or do any of the readers know the currently third tallest building in the world? B) The architectural design bears little information about the Middle East. The desert flower “hymenocallis” (according to the Internet, endemic in South America!) supposedly inspired the layout of the tower, yet only few visitors will be able to see that or any other connection to the region and C) The name – and especially to those who know the tower’s original name – unveils a different story about Dubai than the structure itself would like to tell...

André C. Meyerhans is a Swiss architect who lives and works in Dubai, UAE. His creations range from 250’000m2-urban plans and onebillion-US-dollar mixed use developments to furniture-like objects, art and jewellery. André has also written for various trade magazines and held lectures in numerous institutions on architecture and design. He is also a regular guest critique at the Architectural Department of the American University in Sharjah. For more details you can visit www.acmeyerhans.com

112

Burj Al Arab, on the other hand, A) Defines itself over class or quality rather than over superlative and quantity and is therefore less vulnerable to the ravages of time B) Affiliates with the region in terms of design: the building looks like a sail of an old dhow filled with wind and the opulent interior with its vibrant colours reflects the taste of the local culture and C) (which is the most important point) it represents, in an iconographic way, all what Dubai wanted to stand for: superior technology, luxury, vision and invention, … Burj Al Arab was a visual synonym for Dubai. The building served efficiently as a marketing tool to promote Dubai in the world. While the bellied tower might not receive as much attention these days as it did in earlier years, it surely had the most significant impact for Dubai in most recent history. Of course, having said that, my personal favourite to top the list of buildings that shaped Dubai is Dubai World Trade Center. And here are the buildings that top the list of other Middle Eastern countries according to my judgment...

OMAN

The Chedi Muscat: It successfully merges the charm of Omani architecture with the elegance of international styles on a top level.

BAHRAIN

TECHNOLOGY

BACK TO FUTURE A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY WE SEE AROUND US TODAY THAT WE TAKE FOR GRANTED WON’T BE AROUND FOR TOO LONG. THE WORLD IS ADVANCING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS EVERY DAY. TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS WIRED INTERNET CONNECTIONS, DEDICATED CAMERAS AND CAMCORDERS, LANDLINE PHONES AND OPTICAL MEDIA; THAT WE TAKE FOR GRANTED TODAY WON’T EVER BE USED, OR MAYBE EVEN SEEN, BY OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. HOWEVER, ALL NEW TECHNOLOGY HAS ITS STEPPING STONES AND WITH A LITTLE BIT OF PATIENCE AND RESEARCH YOU CAN CATCH A GLIMPSE OF WHAT IS IN STORE FOR US IN THE NEAR AND FAR FUTURE... HERE IS A QUICK LOOK AT TECHNOLOGY THAT IS ALREADY IN DEVELOPMENT AND SHOULD SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY SOONER THAN LATER

Augmented Reality Augmented reality is already in its infancy and is making a appearance in many aspects of our lives. Many GPS apps, game consoles, mobiles and more take advantage of the tech to augment their already impressive features and to better integrate themselves into the daily lives of their users. But the true potential of augmented reality has only just been truly explored with the advent of ‘Project Glass‘. It is programme developed by Google to prototype and build an augmented reality head-mounted display that will perfectly integrate itself with your daily life. There is even an impressive video of what life would be like with these glasses equipped. As dorky as it may look, if it is any indication of what the final product will be capable off, it could quite possibly be the next evolution of our ‘clunky’ smartphones.

RFID Most, if not all, of us are familiar with the barcode system currently in use to identify products. RFID, radio frequency identification, is to be its replacement and is already in use at a number of locations. It has one primary purpose, that is to identify products wirelessly, but its actual uses are innumerable. Just imagine going to the grocery store, filling up your cart and walking right out the door. Once in place, it will rid the pains of staying in long lines at grocery stores and that is just the start. Once you pass the checkout, the RFID tags will be used to detect every item in the cart almost instantly and will then send information on your products to the retailer and product manufacturers for inventory and marketing purposes. Furthermore, the amount of the bill will be instantly deducted from your account. And this is just the start of what the technology is capable of.

Flying cars Some time ago this seemed like a far-fetched idea but it seems that soon this could actually be a reality. A lot of independent developers and companies have already tried their hand at making this dream a reality, but only one has truly come close to production – Terrafugia. To be perfectly honest; their vehicle, named ‘Transition’, is more of a street-legal light aircraft than an actual flying car. It even looks more like a squashed aeroplane than an actual car. But then again the Wright Brothers Flyer 1 didn’t exactly look like the Concorde, but look where commercial aviation has reached today. Moreover, taking into account that there are 100 pre-orders already placed for the vehicle and the fact that it has completed its first successful test flight on March 23, 2012; it definitely looks like we are witnessing advent of the personal flying car.

Death of desktop computing As the world of personal computing gets smaller and more efficient, we could soon see a world where no desktop computers actually exist. A lot of what makes a desktop computer worthwhile is being taken over by other devices. Laptops and tablet PCs are becoming increasingly popular, cost effective and powerful; personal handsets are getting smarter and also more powerful; touch interfaces everywhere will soon eliminate keyboards and maybe even mice; hard disk drives and optical media are on the verge of extinction due to the advent of solid state media; and furthermore current game consoles have pretty much endangered PC gaming as we know it. We can’t even imagine what the Next Gen systems (which are due out as early as 2013) will do to the PC gaming industry. Regardless, it isn’t one single piece but rather a collection of new tech that may eventually bring about the end of desktop computing as we know it.

Future Flight The race to make commercial travel more efficient and cost effective is an on-going struggle, especially so with the constantly rising costs of fuel. One of the leading projects in next-gen commercial aviation is the D8 concept. It is a "double-bubble" configuration concept, currently being developed by a research team at MIT in conjunction with NASA and is designed to maximise fuel efficiency. The MIT-led team developed the twin-aisle "double-bubble" D8 configuration during the NASA-funded N+3 studies completed in 2010. The D8 could reduce fuel burn by as much as 70 per cent relative to today's 737-800. And of that saving, 49 per cent comes from the configuration alone with its wide lifting-body fuselage, almost-unswept wing and reduced cruise Mach number, and rear-mounted engines. If all goes well, the D8 could be your flight of choice in and around 2035.
