SPORTING SPIRIT With Olympics 2012 now beaming right into our living rooms, it just seems that we cannot get enough of the hits, the misses, the records and of course, the edge-of-the-seat action. The once-in-four-years spectacle also gives rise to many talented sportspersons, young men and women whose single-minded focus exemplifies the true Olympic spirit… ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’… They also become the role models for the future generation to look up to and emulate. When it comes to women and the Games, the fairer sex did not have it so easy in the beginning. Did you know that the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens 1896 had no women at all? The founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin felt that their inclusion would be ‘impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic and incorrect’. Despite de Coubertin’s resistance and reticence, women did take part in the next Games, Paris 1900. And the rest as they say is history! Since then, women have been breaking many barriers (along with records) at the Games. Breaking the male bastion is no longer a mean feat or achievement, it has become a given. Some successful women Olympians include Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen who won four gold medals in 1948, Soviet Maria Gorokhovskaya who in 1952 set a record for most medals won by a woman in one Olympics, Joan Benoit of the US who won the first women’s Olympic marathon at Los Angeles 1984… and who can forget gymnast Nadia Comaneci and her perfect score of 10? Today, thankfully, the Olympic Games is all about gender equality and woman power. This year at the London Olympics, for the first time, there are more women than men on the US team at 269 to 261. Russia is not far behind with its all-majority female team. Also in the ‘sportlight’ is Malaysian shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi who in all likelihood is the most pregnant athlete to compete in an Olympics. For these women, it’s all about going out there and not only proving themselves, but also putting in their best to bring honour and glory to the countries they represent. It’s also about trying and not being afraid to dream. As Olympian Gail Devers puts it so succinctly, “Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.” When it comes to sporting action, it’s ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ for these women for whom the sky is the limit. We hope at the end of the London Olympics, there will be more women achievers for us to be proud of… We’ll see you next month, until then, stay cool, people! Eid Mubarak and greetings of the season from all of us at The Woman!

PERFECT VACATION

WHY I LOVE WILLOW

With summer vacations already upon us and the mercury rising by the day, the only respite from the temperatures outside and tantrums of our kids inside is to take them on a family vacation! Going through your travel guide on ‘family friendly destinations’ gave me and my husband just the right choice to choose our next holiday destination! It’s bye-bye Oman and hello Disney world!! Thank you for making our job a tad bit easier!

Thanks a ton for featuring Willow Smith in your magazine last month. She’s such a great role model for girls my age (I’m 14 by the way). She’s managed to balance mainstream music with an edgy style and I love how grounded she is. She’s got an irresistible screen quality (but I guess it’s in her genes) and it’s really amazing to see stars who don’t fit the ‘teen idol’ cookie cutter mould thrive in an industry dominated by sub-par musicians. Kudos Willow!

MOST CHERISHED

R RSTA SUPE

The most cherished relationship in the world is that shared by a mother and her child. A mother, in every sense of the saying, is our friend, philosopher and guide. Reading an exhaustive issue about this special bond between a mother and her child overwhelmed me with emotion. It was a heart-warming issue. Well done!!

A GOOD READ

First of all, Ramadan Mubarak to the entire team. I would like you thank you for the article on health tips during Ramadan. There were some really great tips and I will most certainly follow them. Also, the article on the mother-daughter relationship was beautiful and true in so many ways. Both my daughters are married and have families of their own but still visit regularly. Even today, my daughters always contact me when they need advice and guidance. The Woman is a fantastic magazine and I have been a loyal reader from the start. Keep up the good work!

FRIENDS FOREVER

I loved reading ‘Mum and Me’. I have a daughter who will be leaving for university soon. I would like to have her around at home all the time but she’d rather spend all her time outside with friends. Although this sometimes causes clashes between the two of us, in the end we’re still close. On a different note, I also liked the story on travel destinations. We have been planning a family holiday for a while now but can’t seem to agree on a place. That feature was definitely helpful. Thanks again!

COVER STORY

It takes all types… ON FRIENDSHIP DAY, MAHREEN SOHAIL TAKES A LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF FRIENDSHIPS THAT RULE OUR LIVES…

8

AUGUST 2012

N

othing soothes the soul quite like a long chat with your closest friends. When you are feeling blue, when you are feeling jaded, or maybe even when you are just happy and looking to share the happiness – there’s always a person out there (or a group of people out there) who know just what you need. This month we celebrate friendship by highlighting all the different ‘types’ of friends out there! Here’s to the rocks in our lives – our friends!

when something funny happens and it’s not socially appropriate to laugh out loud. This is the person whose shoulder you cry on, this is the person you can call at 4am and though she’ll curse at you initially she won’t hang up without hearing what you have to say first. This is the person who always, always has your back – even when you’re wrong. Your best friend will tell you off and boost you up all in the same sentence. Your best friend gets you, so hold on to this one folks… these kind of people are one in a million, we’re lucky even to find one good one in our lives!

knows? Somehow, somewhere your paths crossed and then separated. Sometime later you remembered or she remembered you in passing. You sent a message, she sent one back, and that’s it - that’s all it took to ignite the spark of friendship – this person isn’t around you physically, doesn’t know your life or your friends, you don’t know her life or her friends but you’re willing to try across the distance, to take an interest in each other’s lives; because somehow despite having so much distance between you, you’re both operating on the same wavelength.

The Best Friend

The Long Distance Friend

You may have known this person for your whole life – you were practically telepathically connected across wombs – or you may have just known her for a year, but she will hold a very special place in your heart. This is the person your life would be incomplete without. This is the person you exchange looks with

You don’t know how you became friends with this person - you met once at a party, at some random coffee shop and hit it off. You spoke for half-an-hour, an hour, maybe for the entire night and then went your separate ways. Maybe you exchanged e-mail addresses, phone numbers, Facebook IDs. Who

It’s also nice to have someone who’s not directly part of your life, give you objective advice. Since she’s removed from your close knit circle of friends, she offers a different and invaluable perspective on your life. So stay in touch for it’s rare to find someone to connect with despite having so many differences to move past.

The No-Nonsense Friend This friend refuses to let you let yourself down. She is harsh with you - sometimes you think she is too harsh. These kind of friends tell you when you’re being an idiot, when you’re being silly, when you’re completely in the wrong and boy, do they tell you! They scream it at you, yell at you, get angry at you - often when you’re down and out, when you don’t think you can handle anymore criticism. But the thing is you need this person in your life. This is the person who knows what they are talking about and who is always honest with you even if it hurts your feelings in the short run. And you know what? In the long run, you’re better for it. So man up, and listen to this friend of yours! She knows what she’s talking about what they are talking about and even though it doesn’t always seem like it – she does love you.

The Funny Friend Feeling sad? Or just need to take your mind of those tiny niggling things that are worrying you? The laundry needs to be picked up, the groceries need to be put away, the kids are unwashed and are clamouring for food – it feels like this day has lasted forever and you can’t wait for everything to calm down. Call that one friend that can always cheer you up, the one that can make a joke out of anything. This friend will take your long, tiring day and through sheer force of will (and a glib tongue!) make it sound like a sit-com situation.

10 AUGUST 2012

When you get done on the phone or finish tea with this person your problems won’t have gone away but you will feel better about them!

The Wild Friend Bored? Call this friend up and boy, does she have stories for you! She saw Brad Pitt at a party she went to last night, she sings and dances and acts and of course, never sleeps. This friend is all party all the time and you feel envious just listening to her. Your life is tame compared to hers. You spend your time making sure there’s no mould growing on the bathroom floor, she spends hers trying to have as much fun in as small amount a time as possible. And though sometimes you dream about exchanging your life for hers, the truth is, you just enjoy living vicariously through her. So why not? Live vicariously!

The Despite Yourself Friend This friend has clawed their way into your friend’s circle. You didn’t like her at first, they are too loud and opinionated, and don’t like the movies you like. But somehow this person has managed to stay in your life despite all odds. She’s been around for your birthdays, the holidays, she knows all your gossip and somewhere along the way you realised that even though you complain about her and despite all the ways in which you clash with her, you’d actually miss her if she isn’t around anymore. Does that mean you’re *gasp* finally friends? Yes!

CHOCOLATES ‘R’ US PROMOTING OMAN'S HERITAGE AND CULTURE THROUGH THEIR CHOCOLATES IS THE MAIN AIM BEHIND SALMA'S CHOCOLATES, RUN BY CHOCOLATIERS SALMA AND AISHA AL HAJRI. TITASH CHAKRABORTY MET THEM TO FIND OUT MORE...

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND OUR VENTURE IS… The thought of doing what we love. We are big chocolate lovers and found that no one in Oman makes chocolates. Most of the chocolates here are imported from Lebanon, UAE, etc. It’s always a good thing to do what you love and for us it’s making chocolates. When we first started off, we tried them out with our friends and family and they really liked it. It was their encouragement and our love for chocolates that acted as a real inspiration to push forth our venture. THIS IS OUR CALLING BECAUSE… We wanted to give the traditional Omani desserts a modern ‘chocolate-y’ twist and present the taste

12 AUGUST 2012

of the Sultanate to Omanis and foreigners. Through these chocolates, we would like to tell the people, both Omani and foreigners the story and taste of Oman. We want to take Oman and present it to the world through our chocolates. The name, the taste and even the packaging material will eventually come from Oman and represent our culture.

Along with this, from the start we were supported by a company that not only bought our chocolates but helped us promote ourselves. We took courses abroad to train ourselves in making chocolates which was a part of investing not only in ourselves but also our business. Although beginners, we have tried to be professional from the start.

HERE’S HOW WE SET IT UP… We first started at home, where we continued for two years. At first we would make chocolates for our friends and family. That is when we were given the idea of starting a business. For two years, we produced and distributed chocolates from home. Our shop, Salma’s Chocolates was set up four months ago with the help of one of our family members.

FACING HURDLES, OBSTACLES AND DIFFICULTIES… Chocolate isn’t something that is easy to make, especially because we make home-made, fresh chocolates. So it takes a lot of time and effort to make a small quantity because we have to ensure that the correct measurements and temperatures are maintained. It is a hard job, but we love it. Like every

startup, we too faced problems in the beginning. But now, We have managed to break-even and we hope to share our love for chocolates and Oman with the world. THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOUR ARE… That today we have our own shop which we are slowly building and it is starting to gain popularity. We will soon be opening a stall at a leading store so people can try our delectable creations. We have been able to tell the story of Oman, share our culture and heritage with not only the Omani people, but also foreigners. Through our gourmet chocolates, we have managed to revive the traditional Omani sweets that were slowly disappearing. The new generation will be able to

taste their heritage in these chocolates. TODAY WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR… We are grateful to the various institutes that have helped us follow our dream of making chocolates. They have not only given us financial aid but also helped us promote ourselves. One of them has been helping us by only buying our chocolates for their company. I am grateful to my family and friends who have supported us in our venture. THEY SAY BUSINESS IS A GAMBLE, WE SAY... If you have hope in your business, and truly love what you are doing, then business is just like any other job. The more involved and serious you are about it, the better it will be for you. For us, the

business isn’t about making money but about doing what we love. Part of our dreams also stem from the quest for doing something for Oman. We want to present Oman to the world, in our box of handmade Omani chocolates. GO AFTER YOUR DREAM BECAUSE… You dream of what you love, and if you work towards it, it is easy to achieve. We went after our dream of making chocolates and because of that today we have our shop from where we sell our home made creations. Our main aim was to be able to present Oman to the world with our chocolates and to help revive the old traditional Omani sweets. To have achieved that, is already a big step for us.

RADICALLY

RED!

CASSANDRA BUCKLEY DISHES SOME HANDY HINTS TO ROCK REDS When one thinks of the colour red, one thinks of danger, anger and a deep abiding love. This colour among all others has the ability to incite deep passionate emotions in people, especially women; whether it is the feeling of confidence in a bold red lipstick or the subtle femininity of a silky red dress. Here are a few tips that can help you rock this lush colour without going over the top and making you look like a ripe tomato.

34 AUGUST 2012

Luscious Red Lipsticks... If you choose to wear red lipstick (of any shade), remember to keep the rest of your makeup to the bare minimum. You want to make your lips pop and be the centre of attention so keep your eye-makeup neutral or natural. However, for night time events go for the classic old Hollywood look with red lipstick and lots of eyeliner. The cat-eye look is in this season; pair it with a bold red lip and you’ll have a sophisticated yet sexy look that will make you the centre of attention. Try to match your lip liner to exactly or a bit darker than your lipstick colour to give your lips a defined shape and a richer texture. Women with paler skin should choose red lipsticks with some orange in it; the tomato red really pops on lighter skin and makes it look chic. Women with medium to darker skin can get away with deeper reds that have brown or tawny bases or warmer reds. Women with a darker skin tone can pull off dark reds, fuchsias, pinks, and orange-based poppy reds. For a long lasting colour, use a red lip stain and then apply a clear or cherry-tinted gloss over that, it helps the colour stick around longer. Nailing the Reds... Well manicured nails not only look tidy, they also help

pull outfits together and complete your overall look. Women with a darker skin tone can sport rich colours such as muted burgundy or dark reds; they bring out the beautiful colour of dark complexions. Tan skin looks amazing with lighter shades of red; such as pale pink or raspberry. As these colours are in this season, be sure to give them a whirl! Vibrant earthy colours bring out the best in medium to earthy skin tones. Bright reds such as blood reds would really make your nails come alive. Women with fair skin can get away with wearing light colours such as light beige or pink. However, a bright pink will add a pop of colour that will definitely get anyone’s attention. Lady in Red... Choose a simple style when picking out a red dress. The colour itself oozes sexiness so a simple elegant style is the way to go. Keep your accessories chic and simple. Go for silver or gold delicate jewellery for a glamorous look. Over accessorising will run the risk of looking tacky. Black would usually be the colour you’d think to match red with. However, you should go for neutral or silver shades in sandals with a matching clutch for a night out in town or a tote in nude colours for the day. For your makeup, go for greyish metallic colours

or earthy shades like browns or golds which will enhance the look of the dress. For your nails, go for the same shade as your dress or a professionally done French manicure which will set off your look superbly. If Dorothy could do it... If you intend to wear red shoes, keep the rest of your outfit simple. Every piece of your outfit should be a single block of colour and these colours should generally be dark greys, black or white. You can wear large plain jewellery, or opt for chunky metallic jewellery in gold or silver. Show off your shoes. If you’re wearing them, flaunt them. Make sure they peep out from under your pants or wear them with a skirt so that everyone gets a glimpse. Red Handbags... Complement your Little Black Dress with a splash of colour with a red clutch and shoes; a look that will make you stand out in the crowd. A sophisticated red bag will add a pop of colour to any work attire, especially a navy blue dress. You will look professional and smart but also less dowdy than the workplace uniform of grey or black. Pairing a red tote or bag when wearing white is also a sensational look that will have heads turning anywhere you go.

DOTS DONE RIGHT POLKA DOTS MAY BE OHSO-RETRO, BUT FASHION FORECASTS INDICATE THAT THEY ARE HERE TO STAY! WHETHER YOUR STYLE’S UNDERSTATED OR O.T.T, ROCK THE LOOK WITH OUR SIMPLE TIPS…

36 AUGUST 2012

P

olka dots made a strong come back during spring/summer 2010 and it looks like they are here to stay. The pattern, made famous by Minnie Mouse, is now showing up on everything – from hats and dresses, to headbands and umbrellas. Which means, for those of you who are pattern-shy, there is an easy way for you to incorporate them into your wardrobe too! They are certainly one of the most eye-catching and striking prints, whether we talk about items of clothing or accessories. Therefore, it is important to know when and especially how, to wear them. This summer, you have many options and versions of polka dots from discreet ones to more extravagant kinds.

For a summer office look, black and white is probably one of the winning combinations that never fails. A pleated dress can flatter you as it will hide the flaws around your waist and hips. Moreover, it will give you a dose of femininity and elegance that all women want. As for the colour, a white dress with black dots is your best bet and a safe one at that. You can also match a black pleated skirt with white shirt with polka dots and maybe add a blazer on top. You can play around a little bit and choose coloured accessories. Finish off the look with a pair of black or nude pumps or ballet flats. If it’s a night out with friends, pair your skinny jeans with a silk polka dotted shirt and heels. Alternatively, for a more formal evening setting, choose a ‘70s style black dress with white dots and high-heeled sandals. During hot summer days, a breezy dress with polka dots is a perfect choice for a casual look. You can choose a white one with black dots, or you can play around with colours. A white skirt with dots paired with a red or black blouse with flats or sandals make for a comfortable option. You could also try matching a polka dotted top with a straight-cut navy blue skirt and a pair of ballerina flats or flat sandals. Complete the look by picking the right accessories such as a large handbag, over-sized sunglasses and small earrings and you’re good to go. Polka dots are cheery prints that are sure to bring an element of fun to your wardrobe. Just remember to keep things proportional and simple and pair polka dots alongside solid, neutral pieces. Keep these tips in mind next time you’re putting a look together and we promise that they’ll keep you looking fashionable and totally in vogue this summer.

When it comes to wearing polka dots, designers suggest starting with items like loose polka dot shirts or silk scarves to keep the print wearable. Try picking one signature piece and working your look around that; for example, you could pair polka-dot tights with a solid coloured dress or a simple polka dotted loose shirt with a pair of cropped pants in similar colour. Hand bags and scarves are a great way to include polka dots into your outfit without causing a trend overkill.

Just can’t get enough! THE NEXT BEST THING TO DIAMONDS IS DEFINITELY AN OHSO-AWESOME BAG. GET THAT RIGHT AND TRANSFORM YOUR WHOLE LOOK FROM ORDINARY TO MIND-BLOWING GORGEOUS, SAYS SANA RAHIM Chocolate and strawberries. Bread and butter. Women and handbags. Some things are just best put together! More than a simple fashion accessory, women use handbags to hold their daily essentials, from make-up to cell phone chargers and iPods. Everything and anything goes into that bag! You can never have too many handbags, especially if you have a bag fetish. Here’s a list of must have bags… if such a thing is even possible!

THE QUINTESSENTIAL TRAVEL BAG A travelling handbag is the most important one, especially if you’re set to go on out-of-town trips… Space and compartments are important for any travel carry-all, so make sure you choose a hand bag spacious enough for day and night essentials. A bag with many compartments will allow you to store all your belongings in an organised way, so go for bags with extra inner pockets and zip pockets.

THE ALL-TIME FAVOURITE, TOTE Every woman needs one of these carry-all totes for the beach, travel, shopping, or to carry around her books. Totes often come in fun colours and patterns and because they’re so big, they’re capable of immediately transforming an otherwise drab outfit. You should keep in mind though that the tote must have long enough straps which will help you carry it on your shoulder so that your hands are free while running errands.

THE BRIGHT COLORED HANDBAG To break the monotony of carrying dull and boring bags, it’s a good idea for you to own a handbag that speaks volumes. A bright coloured handbag, whether in yummy yellow, luscious pink, or leafy green, will surely turn heads and transform your getup from blah to unforgettable. You can also pick handbags with interesting prints.

THE CHIC LEATHER SATCHEL Leather bags may be a bit on the expensive side, but fine leather can last for years. You can always opt for black leather handbags that work well with any outfit. Brown, dark blue and dark grey are great colour choices as well. You can carry this handbag to office, corporate meetings or even as a sophisticated everyday bag.

THE BLING FACTOR - CLUTCH A clutch bag is a must for parties, short trips to the mall, or when out with friends. You can also experiment by picking out clutch bags in brighter shades and exciting prints. Wrist bags are variations of clutch bags, so if you don’t feel like holding on to your clutch for long, the wrist bag comes to the rescue!

SLICE OF LIFE - WELL-BEING

The Importance of ‘Me Time’ Dr. Prema Seshadri is a psychologist, writer and entrepreneur

When the world around you seems to be moving at warp speed, it’s time to press the pause button and take some much-needed ‘me time’. Dr. Prema Seshadri explains more…

H

uman nature is convoluted and very intriguing too. As I travel back in time, what I see is an ambiguous figure consumed in a time and space trying desperately to adapt to other equally ambiguous humans who are groping to let go off props and evolve into their own identities. The need to be accepted or loved or to belong is so all consuming during those delicate years of adolescence and early adulthood that one forgets oneself and compromises at every possible level. In such a scenario there really is nothing called a “Me-time” though, at that stage, they are often judged as self-absorbed and self-centered. The truth of the matter is they are yet to find the “Me” or the “Self”. Most are lucky to come out of that stage. However, there are still many out there who are unable to detach themselves from people and duties, which constantly lie around the periphery, and find and nurture their inner self. And over a period of time, there is a diminished sense of self-worth. The longer they find themselves in this cage, the more the sense of bitterness and resentment.

40 AUGUST 2012

And as miserable people, they create misery all around. By and large it is the women who are more prone to this phenomenon. It’s probably because of a stereotypical conditioning that as women and caregivers, keeping the home and hearth warm and happy is the one and only duty that she has to honor. Having her identity, much less a life was never an option. Secondly, it could well be that women are yet to understand that while they are an integral part of any social structure, they do not require any kind of a prop, be it a person, relationship or position to find or assert their identity. Women who have discovered themselves and have developed a strong character and personality based on this discovery not only make for a super-strong support system to everyone who come into her circle of influence, but becomes her own asset. This is critical because at the end of the day, she will have to sit back and evaluate her own dreams, her own run towards her own goals, and herself as an individual. Her happiness will depend on how she passes this evaluation. If she sees a valuable learning in this process, she will come back to take care of her

numerous responsibilities with renewed vigor, that extra energy, and most importantly that sense of well-being. And passing this test will depend on she creating a little world that belongs only to her. Women lend huge chunks of their very selves to everybody around. It is imperative that she creates a little niche where she can indulge in an activity that is not merely satisfying but also very invigorating, where she can follow her own little dream for her own little satisfaction, be a little selfish and steal a little time every day for herself, and enjoy that feeling of having played truant. She must have her “Me-time. It will ensure that she remains young in spirit, silent in her contentment, and wise in her generosity.

SLICE OF LIFE - WORKWISE

Body Talk

DID YOU KNOW THAT ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF COMMUNICATION INVOLVES ACTUAL WORDS? BODY LANGUAGE IS PIVOTAL WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNICATION – ESPECIALLY AT THE WORK PLACE. JAGRUTI NARWANI EXPLAINS FURTHER

W

e often hear and believe that having good Communication skills will lead us to our way to Success. It is a true statement as; good communication is the foundation of successful relationships, both personal and professional. And it’s not just the verbal communication that does the magic. Remember, before you have even opened your mouth, the rest of your body has already spoken volumes. Studies prove that only a small percentage of communication involves actual words whereas the rest (which is a huge share) is visual (body language, eye contact) and is vocal (pitch, speed, volume, tone of voice). This non-verbal communication or your body language reveals the real you, as your mouth may lie, but your body will not. So as to excel at your workplace all you need to do is, be aware of your body language which will help you assess the message you are sending to your colleagues. The ability to understand and use body language, is a powerful tool that can help you connect with others, express what you really mean

42 AUGUST 2012

and navigate challenging situations while building better relationships. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS (FACE-UP) Your face can express fear, shock, happiness, anger, disappointment and a multitude of non-verbal communications. Without speaking a word, a facial expression can convey a great deal of information to others. When you speak, your face - more clearly than any other part of your body - communicates to others your attitudes, feelings and emotions. Try to project a positive facial expression (I don't mean you should smile always as it is difficult to fake one). Instead, being positive means sincerely projecting an air of confidence. If you relax your inhibitions and allow yourself to respond naturally to your thoughts, attitudes and emotions, your facial expressions will be appropriate and will project sincerity, conviction and credibility. BODY MOVEMENTS AND POSTURE (LET YOUR BODY DO THE TALKING) Consider how your perceptions about people are affected by the way they sit, walk, stand up, or hold their head. This type of nonverbal communication includes your posture, bearing, stance, and subtle movements. Your overall posture indicates your confidence and interest in what you are doing. Slumping in your chair during a meeting may cause others to sense that you are bored or not interested in the presentation. While having a conversation where everybody is standing, it is important that you

stand straight and avoid slouching. Remember, the way you move and carry yourself, communicates a wealth of information to the world. GESTURES (ACTIONS ARE LOUDER THAN WORDS) Gestures are woven into the fabric of our daily lives. We wave, point, beckon, and use our hands when we’re arguing or speaking animatedly— expressing ourselves with gestures often without thinking. However, the meaning of gestures can be very different across cultures and regions, so it’s important to be careful to avoid misinterpretation. Using gestures can enhance what you are saying and make it more interesting. But too large or too small a gesture however, can make it dangerous. It is important to learn to use your hands correctly, as it is considered a sign of honesty. I suggest you use your hands and keep them visible. Do not place your hands in your pockets, as people may view you as hiding something. Also, do not fold your hands around your chest as it will portray you as a defensive person. EYE CONTACT (IF YOU ARE NOT LOOKING, YOU ARE NOT LISTENING) Since the visual sense is dominant for most people, eye contact is an especially important type of nonverbal communication. The way you look at someone can communicate many things, including interest, affection, hostility, or attraction. Eye contact is also important in maintaining the flow

of conversation and for gauging the other person’s response. This factor is critical in establishing trustworthiness and confidence. It is polite to give the person speaking your full attention. It is important therefore, to watch the face of the speaker and not to roam the room with your eyes. Eye contact shows the person we are speaking with that we are listening; it is how we show interest. But look away at frequent intervals to gather a thought or reflect on what is being said. Constant eye contact might tend to intimidate people and make them feel as if they are being stared down. TOUCH (KNOW YOUR LIMITS) We communicate a great deal through touch. Think about the messages given by the following: a firm handshake, a timid tap on the shoulder, a warm bear hug, a reassuring pat on the back, a patronizing pat on the head, or a controlling grip on your arm. It should be noted that while it is important to gesture and use your hands, other than the gesture of the handshake, you should rarely touch a person in a business setting. People have different acceptances for physical touch and a good rule of thumb is just to avoid it. VOICE (DON’T JUST SPEAK, ARTICULATE) It’s not just what you say; it’s how you say it. When we speak, other people “read” our voices in addition to listening to our words. Things they pay attention to include your timing and pace, how loud you speak, your tone, and sound that convey understanding, such as “ahh” and “uh-huh.” It is recommended to not speak at a very high pitch or at a pitch that is hardly hearable. In order to communicate well and ensure that the interpretation is happening correctly, think about how the tone of your voice sounds, for example, while indicating sarcasm, anger, affection, or confidence. Pick your appropriate tone as per the situation and the person. POSITIVE VIBES From all of the above, a lot of what we 'give' and 'receive' depends on our vibes. Positivity within your mind will always reflect on your body language. Give positive auto suggestions to yourself and believe them. Right before going to bed and as soon you wake up are the best way to make positive suggestions seep into your sub-conscious. Think positive, wear a smile and you are ready to conquer the minds of all at your workplace and outside. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What you do, speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” Let your body language communicate a commanding presence that reflects confidence, competence and charisma. ho is she? Where did she come from? Superstar Frieda Pinto first appeared on the world’s ‘fame’ radar when she starred opposite Dev Patel in 2008’s Academy Award Winning Film Slumdog Millionaire. Pinto auditioned for the role of Latika and was eventually short listed and selected for the role. Did she know what was in store for her? Probably not. Did audiences know what was in store for them? Definitely not. Academy Award winning Director Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire went on to win eight out of the 10 Academy Awards it was nominated for, but the real charmer was the stunning Ms. Pinto. Born October 18 to parents Sylvia and Frederick, Mumbai-born Freida caught the acting bug early. Her sister Sharon now says, “I always knew she wanted to do something in front of the camera. As a child she would stand in front of the mirror and imitate actors. She would stick photos up in her room of actors and actresses she liked. For Christmas we would have these little plays and she would write, direct and star in them. They were very amateurish but she would get the kids together to sing…” When Freida was 10, Sushmita Sen

went on to win Miss Universe and that was a turning point in her life. Her mother recalls, “When she saw Sushmita Sen win, she said, ‘I am going to do something like that someday.” She cut Sushmita’s picture out and stuck it on the back of her cupboard.” However, fame took a while to knock on her doorstep. Young Freida dreamt big dreams in Mumbai where she says it was hard to get into the business without having inside connections; “I always wanted to get into acting. But it’s difficult in India. You have to be a child of an actor or actress, or have a godfather.” However, luck was on her side. After she finished university, talent scouts at Elite Modeling Agency spotted Pinto and recognised that she had a beautiful and versatile look. Pinto started modelling. Later when Boyle sent out audition calls for Slumdog Millionaire, Elite Modeling Agency sent out seven girls, one of whom was Pinto. Against all odds, she managed to nab the role of Latika, and the rest, as they say, is history. Freida herself says, “With each film I want to grow as an actor. I want to do performance-driven roles. Slumdog Millionaire is a film about destiny. And destiny itself had a major

part to play in me getting this role. I believe that things like a middle class girl debuting in a Danny Boyle film cannot be planned. Neither can winning an Oscar. If it’s meant to be, it will. I’ve realised that the beauty of life is that it takes turns that are sometimes bigger than your wildest dreams.” Speaking of one’s wildest dreams coming true, Pinto blossomed into India’s biggest international star almost overnight. Today she is unique in the sense that she is better known internationally than she is in India. Till date, Pinto has not starred in a Bollywood movie and so she finds it hard to find a niche for herself in her home country where most stars are born at home. Pinto herself says, “I guess everybody in India has tried really hard to do what they do and then move into the West. And I suppose I just popped in from nowhere, like, “Who the hell is she?” So I can kind of understand the surprise, and that’s why I’m not bitter about it. My friends meet people all the time who say things like, “But what has Freida done before?” Obviously they get defensive about me because they’re my friends, but they also try to understand the other side to make me understand it better.”

Like it or not, she is global now. Since Slumdog Millionaire she’s starred in You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger, Miral, Rise of the Planet Apes, Trishna, Immortals and Black Gold. The movies she’s starred in since Slumdog have proven that Pinto is not just a one hit wonder. Today the dusky bombshell is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful and talented women in the world. Sadly, gentlemen, she’s also taken. She fell in love with her co-star Dev Patel who played Latika’s love interest Jamal in the movie. Says Pinto, “…for both Dev and me, Slumdog was our first film, and it became so massive that you had to preserve and protect what you had before, that innocence, without getting sucked in. And who better to do it with than someone who knows what you’re thinking? Dev had never done a talk show before—his first was [Late Show With] David Letterman - and he said to me, “You have to come with me and give me moral support.” So it was very much a case of being there for my friend. Nothing we did was planned. We were making a lot of mistakes, but we were together, and most of the time our mistakes were looked on as, “Oh my god, that’s so cute.” Awww, they are really cute. Today, the couple holds a special place in everybody’s hearts and it’s hard to see them together without wanting to pinch their cheeks and wish them the best. Which we do! We wish them the best! In the meantime, we’re sure the actress is going to go from strength to strength. Her meteoric rise to fame through sheer force of drive and talent proves one thing – dream big, dream hard. It will happen! Here’s to you Ms. Pinto!

BUZZ - STARDUST

SAM ON FIRE

If rumours are to be believed, Sam Claflin (who recently starred alongside Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman) will be cast for the role of Finnick in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In the most coveted, talked-about role in the sequel to Hunger Games, Finnick is a handsome, blonde, extremely clever who interacts with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) in the second book in Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster trilogy. The British actor, 26, has also starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides plus the acclaimed TV fantasy miniseries Pillars of the Earth. Also in the running for an as-yet uncast role: Tony Shalhoub as Beetee.

HEARD ON THE GRAPEVINE FEUDING FRENEMIES

Karan Johar is making a movie on the famous book, Immortals of Meluha and there is a strong buzz that the Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor are the top contenders for the role of Sati. Rumour has it that Hrithik Roshan will be playing the role of Shiva. Now, we all know (sort of) that Kareena is K Jo’s favourite but let’s not forget that Priyanka has delivered two massive hits for him, namely, Dostana and Agneepath. So this is going to be a rather close one. Priyanka recently patched up with Kareena. But it seems that with The Immortals of Meluha, they will soon become frenemies again. We’ll just have to wait and watch.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON

Aamir Khan’s 17-year-old son Junaid, has apparently decided that Bollywood is where his heart lies! Reports say he will be making his debut as an assistant director to Rajkumar Hirani on the film Peekay which stars dad Aamir too! But like all dads, Aamir is a little wary of Junaid getting into films at such an early age. His main concern is that Junaid might focus his attention solely on the film and neglect his studies. But apparently Junaid has assured his dad that under no circumstances will he ignore his studies. (Now where have we heard that before?) According to sources, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is extremely impressed with Junaid’s eye for detail. The boy has been on many of his dad’s film sets from where he picked up a lot about the technicalities of filmmaking from Mr. Perfectionist himself. Like father like son, indeed!

48 AUGUST 2012

NO MORE IDOL

Jennifer Lopez has made it absolutely official that her American Idol days are over. Heartbreak! J Lo maintains that it was her choice to leave American Idol but according to other sources, the singer was actually dumped by Fox when she asked for a $2 million raise in salary to $17 million. J Lo’s fee went from $12 million in her first season to $15 million in her second. When she asked for another $2 million, the network surprised her by not making a counter-offer. Many music stars are being considered to replace Lopez, including Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and Lenny Kravitz.

HOT ‘N’ COLD

First the wedding was on, then it was called off and now it is on again… Yep, we’re talking about the Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan wedding saga (read, fiasco) that’s been going on for the past few weeks. Just when we thought that Kareena and Saif were all set to tie the knot, reports said that Kareena got cold feet and the wedding was put off. What’s the deal Bebo? Mom-in-law-to-be, Sharmila, confirmed that the wedding would take place in Mumbai or Pataudi in October but those turned out to be rumours and now finally (we hope), the wedding is set to take place in Maldives this December. But don’t take our word for it. Let’s just say that we won’t believe anything until the day they actually tie the knot.

TEARS OF A PIXIE Anne Hathaway stunned the world when she chopped off her long chestnut hair into a severe, boyish ‘do for the role of Fantine in the big-screen adaptation of Les Miserables. Turns out that the Oscar nominee herself was distraught, too! The 29-year-old star is reported to have said, “I wasn’t expecting it to be a big deal. It was my idea to do it, since it was something the character did... [But then] I realized I couldn’t take it back.” But apparently the drastic cut was more difficult than “doing back flips out of windows and jumping off buildings,” says Hathaway, who performed such stunts in The Dark Knight Rises, out this month. She presumably will grow out her hair again when she walks down the aisle. She and fiance Adam Shulman are set to wed in October 2013.

BACK TO WORK! WEIGHTY MATTERS

Jessica Simpson is hoping to inspire her pals to slim down with her (though it’s safe to assume they don’t have a $4 million Weight Watchers contract as an added incentive). The singer/actress who welcomed daughter Maxwell Drew with her fiancé Eric Johnson is also training with pro Harley Pasternak. The Texas native decided to team up with Weight Watchers because “it focuses on healthy habits for the long-term (and I can still indulge in my guilty pleasures every now and then, too),” she posted on Facebook. “I have actually gotten a group of friends together who are going to be doing it with me.”

We can all agree that the whole Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes drama has fizzled out now. But for those still curious about what’s going on, we are happy to report that after the actress finalised her divorce and custody agreement with Tom Cruise she signed up for her first post-split project. The Dawson’s Creek star has been cast in Theresa Rebeck’s new play, Dead Accounts as Lorna on Broadway this fall. The fivecharacter comedy will be directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien and will open at the Music Box Theatre in NYC.

But whatever you decide, do not miss out Cheow Larn Lake with the majestic limestone mountains rising hundreds of metres above the crystal clear waters. MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST, COSTA RICA In a country known for its magnificent shoreline and scenic coastal towns, Monteverde is a world of its own. It is a place of cloud forests (a cloud forest is a high-elevation forest characterised by a persistent, canopy-level cloud cover. These clouds provide the forest with a continual supply of moisture, which supports the fantastic array of plants that live here), coffee plantations, mist, and friendly locals. Due to its high altitude – approximately 1,440m above sea level – Monteverde is privileged to receive a steady supply of clouds which help support a complex and far-reaching ecosystem – one that harbours over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties of plants (420 of which are orchids alone). Howler monkeys, jaguars, emerald-green Quetzals, bellbirds, umbrellabirds, toucans, manakins, agoutis, sloths – the wonders never cease. It’s wise to plan on spending at least a few days to venture through the region. Activities include guided tours, walking on suspended bridges, hiking through a 17-mile trail as well as touring a coffee plantation located right in the heart of the forest.

THE AMAZON, BRAZIL The Amazon Rainforest (or Amazonia) is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. At 1.2 billion acres, this is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, and 60 per cent of it is found in Brazil. The Amazon rainforest consists of four layers or communities. Each layer has unique ecosystems, plants, and animals adapted to that system. Home to massive Brazil nut trees; 40,000 plant species, including lilies; 2,000 bird species, such as blue macaws; and nearly 400 different kinds of reptiles, including the yellow spotted turtles, the Amazonia is the ultimate getaway for nature buffs. Manaus and Iquitos are logical starting points for any journey into the Amazon rainforest, but these bustling cities deserve a day or two of exploration themselves before you set out for more remote destinations. The confluence of the Rio Negro and Rio Solimóes near Manaus in Brazil is known as the ‘meeting of the waters’ and features a unique melding of dark and yellow waters from the two rivers as well as freshwater dolphins. Whether you want to trek through untamed trails in the jungle, take overnight boat trips down the Amazon, fish for piranhas in one its many tributaries or just relax in a hammock surrounded by armies of fearless hummingbirds, we are sure it’ll be an experience that will forever alter your perception of the natural world.

GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountain Range on the west coast of British Columbia, the ancient Great Bear Rainforest is one of the largest tracts of temperate rainforest left in the world. The 25,000-square-mile rainforest is home to 200-feettall red cedar and spruce trees and hundreds of animal species, including cougars, wolves, bald eagles and Kermode and grizzly bears. Rich salmon streams weave through valley bottoms and if you’re lucky, you might chance upon the rare and mysterious white Kermode (Spirit) bear. Activities include hiking, salmon fishing in the ocean and exploring the 1,000-year-old remnants of the Indians who once inhabited this area. Sea kayaking and Wildlife Viewing in regions of the Great Bear Rainforest provide an unforgettable adventure. Exploring from the safety and comfort of a kayak, paddlers depart from numerous coastal locations, including Bella Bella, to spend a week or so discovering the wild beauty of British Columbia’s Central coast. Taking advantage of the kayak’s silent travel and shallow draft, adventurers can explore tiny coves and narrow passageways, and watch the abundant wildlife found in this remote region.

FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK, NEW ZEALAND Established in 1952, Fiordland National Park is now over 1.2 million hectares in size, and encompasses mountain, lake, fiord and rainforest environments with many plants and animals that have evolved to be completely unique to this area. The lush temperate rainforest offers a great range of activities for everyone, from adventure seekers to the luxury travellers. Charter a boat and cruise through the 14 fiords within the 215km coastline of the region, or make a boat trip across one of the stunning lakes in the region. Alternatively, opt for a sea kayaking adventure – they offer a great way to view the fiords from nature’s level – or hire a bicycle and blaze a trail of your own. Don’t miss out the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, where you can witness the still developing cave formations, accompanied by the sound of flowing water, and drift through caverns inhabited by glow worms. Magnificent!

WHERE: Grand Spa TREATMENT: Guinot facial WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT: Present in 50 countries and 9000 beauty salons all over the world, Guinot is the leading beauty salon brand, offering exclusive salon care, plus a full range of up-market products for face, body and sun. Over a period of nearly thirty years, Guinot has worked to enhance the profession of beauty therapists, gradually achieving a dominant position in relation to the treatments offered by beauty salons and becoming their number one partner. HOW IT WORKS: At first, your hair is wrapped with a headband and the aesthetician begins a facial with a thorough cleansing, using cotton pads or sponges. After this is done, the aesthetician covers your eyes and looks at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp determining your basic skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal) and skin conditions (acne, blackheads, white-heads, ageing, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.). The aesthetician then chooses the appropriate products and treatments, and consults with you about what he or she sees and recommends. Most facials use a machine that directs a thin vapor of warm steam to your face. This is relaxing and helps soften up any blackheads and white-heads to be extracted. If you have very sensitive skin, the aesthetician may instead use a warm face towel.

tried & tested 54 AUGUST 2012

A mechanical or chemical exfoliant is used to rub away the surface to remove dead skin cells. This type of exfoliation usually happens during the steam, this removes the blackheads or white-heads (if it's requested and needed). The treatment is completed with a Grand Spa wellbeing massage. OUR VERDICT: This is a brilliant treatment for those who have dry skin and need that instant glow‌ Try the Guinot facial and have your skin feeling fresher than ever.

ALL IN THE GAME PRESENTING YOU SOME HILARIOUS CONFESSIONS OF AN ERSTWHILE FARMVILLE ADDICT…

A

few years ago on a road trip out of the city I noticed a date farm by the side of the road. A beautiful tranquil oasis in the middle of nowhere that was lush, green and very inviting. The first thought that crossed my mind was that “It looks exactly like my FarmVille Farm”. That day had become a turning point and lead to taking the first step to acknowledging the issue at hand. I had become a FarmVille addict. If you have never played FarmVille on Facebook (congratulations, you have been spared) then allow me to take a moment to introduce the pesky little menace to you. The basic concept of the game revolves around managing your virtual farm by planting, growing, and harvesting virtual crops; tending livestock and trees; constructing buildings such as barns and chicken coops; and buying and selling goods made on the farm. The game prospers through interactions; neighbour helping neighbour by trading goods and gifting items. The more time you dedicate to lovingly planting squash, watermelons and strawberries the more coins you gather and they in turn allow you to exercise your consumer rights and purchase domestic animals or luxurious houses.

56 AUGUST 2012

Whereas most games cease to exist when you turn them off, crops and other items on your FarmVille farm continue growing and ripening in real time, even when you’re not actively playing. Fully grown crops can wither on the vine if they’re not harvested promptly, meaning that you may have to plan your daily schedule around your FarmVille play time to some extent. Except that last sentence is an understatement. Having already spent an hour online planting crops and milking cows the gamer is bound to come back exactly when the crops are due to ripen to prevent them dying; because otherwise planting them would be a waste of time right? Eventually I found myself planning my day around the time my crops were due to be collected. Since strawberries and blueberries took the least time to ripen it was clever to plant them early morning to be collected by lunchtime and pumpkins and sugarcane were best planted overnight to be collected early morning. The farming schedule is a very demanding one and the virtual farmer always finds himself checking his farm right before leaving for work in the morning, during a coffee break or actually avoiding real-life tasks because crops need to be harvested. FarmVille is also absolute heaven for virtual rat packs as it allows you to collect a multitude of items,

decorations, tools and real estate. There are countless themes for all possible festive holidays, seasons and personal tastes. The spirit of competition kicks in momentarily when you realise that your neighbour has more reindeers than you do or their pond landscaping is much more advanced than yours. To reach a new level in the game I found myself befriending complete strangers on Facebook only because they played FarmVille and could help me advance in the game by trading items and fertilising my land. My addiction quickly spun out of control as I spend most of my spare time on what now seems to me a completely ridiculous game. Looking back I don’t remember what exactly lead me to eventually completely give up on my beloved farm but I am under the impression that life simply got in the way. Once you are busy with actual tasks and take on more responsibilities, imaginary chores such as ‘planting tomatoes’ automatically cease to be a priority. If you find yourself addicted to any online games that take up too much of your valuable time simply get yourself out of the house and find the time to stop and smell the roses (one condition- these roses can’t be grown on FarmVille).

(This FarmVille addict wishes to remain anonymous.)

Uterine Fibr oids Q. When am I at a higher risk

of fibroids? Yes, if you are of African descent, have a family history of fibroids, or are obese. In obese women, the fatty tissue converts other hormones into oestrogen - like hormones and the excess oestrogens make the fibroid grow.

Q. What symptoms will I have? Most of the time, you would have no symptoms. The symptoms would depend on the location and the size of the fibroid. Small intramural fibroids do not cause any problems. When they become large they can cause pelvic pain, pressure on the bladder or rectum and heavy menstrual bleeding. Intracavitary or submucosal fibroids can cause heavy bleeding and prolonged periods, even if they are small. Subserosal or pedunculated fibroids can cause back pain or bladder pressure.

Q. How can the doctor detect

that I have fibroids? On abdominal or a pelvic examination of a large uterus maybe felt. However, the easiest, and most reliable method is ultrasound. On ultrasound the number of fibroids, their size and location can be

FIBROIDS OR LEIOMYOMA IS THE MOST COMMON NON - MALIGNANT TUMOURS WHICH GROW IN THE MUSCLE LAYERS OF THE UTERUS. THEY ARE FOUND IN 2080 % OF WOMEN, DEPENDING ON THEIR RACE AND THE DIAGNOSTIC ABILITY OF THE PHYSICIAN. determined. Occasionally, MRI maybe required for diagnosis.

Q.

What treatment options do I have? Most of the time, if you have no symptoms you would not require any treatment. You may require medication or surgery. If you have heavy bleeding or pain, certain medications to reduce the bleeding and pain killers will be advised during your periods. An ultrasound should be done every three months and if the fibroids increase in size or give you symptoms, certain injections - GnRH analogues are given once a month for three to six months. Fibroids grow due to the oestrogen hormone, and since these injections reduce the oestrogen they reduce the size of the fibroids. Another drug danazol only reduce the excessive bleeding, but not the size of the fibroid, so it is rarely used today. If these drugs do not help, you would require surgery.

Q.

What type of surgery would I require? If the medications do not reduce your bleeding or pain or if the size of the fibroids is increasing you would require surgery. If you are young and wish to have children, a myomectomy would be carried out. Here only the fibroid is

removed either by a laparoscope or by opening the abdomen. If you are older and have completed your family and have many fibroids or large fibroids giving you uncontrolled bleeding a hysterectomy ( removal of the uterus ) would be required.

Q. Can I get pregnant with

fibroids? Yes, of course! Fibroids rarely cause infertility. Sometimes, a fibroid which is submucous distorts the uterine cavity and implantation of the embryo maybe affected. Rarely the large fibroids may block the fallopian tube and prevent a pregnancy.

Q.

Will I have problems with fibroids when I am pregnant? Most of the time, there will be no problems. However, fibroids often grow during pregnancy and can cause bleeding, miscarriage, premature labour, abnormal foetal position - breech (where the head is up ) . During labour the fibroid may block the passage of the foetus. In these cases and when the baby is in breech position a Caesarean section will be required

Q. Can a fibroid become

cancerous? Very rarely, the fibroid becomes a

leiomyosarcoma (cancerous) in less than one in a thousand cases. It is therefore essential that an ultrasound is repeated every three to six months and any sudden increase in the size of the fibroid is monitored carefully.

Q.

What are the newer methods of treating fibroids? Certain treatment options are available in some countries. In Uterine artery embolisation (UAE) small particles are inserted into the uterine arteries which block the blood supply to the fibroids and thus reduce the bleeding and prevent further growth. Radiofrequency ablation involves inserting a needle- like device in the fibroid and heating it with radiofrequency waves which destroy the cells. Magnetic resonance guided focussed ultrasound (FUS) is a non -invasive method which uses high intensity focused ultrasound waves to destroy the fibroid. Newer drugs, like ulipristal acetate have also shown good results in reducing the fibroid size. Thus, in the 21st century, with the many treatment options available, a woman with a fibroid can continue to lead her normal lifestyle and would rarely need surgery.

BMW 1 SERIES – SHEER DRIVING PLEASURE The new generation BMW 1 Series stands out as an exceptional car within the compact segment. The car’s sporty character is underlined by its fully updated portfolio of engines that cover an output range from 116 bhp to 184 bhp. Due to BMW Twin Power Turbo Technology and the BMW EfficientDynamics measures used in all engines, the excellent driving pleasure offered by this model is combined with significant reductions in fuel consumption and emission levels.

The car was recently awarded 5 stars in the Euro NCAP New Car Assessment Programme crash test, regarded as one of the most demanding automotive tests in the world. In addition, the car also picked up the ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ award by readers of Auto Bild for best design in the compact premium class. The award is one of Europe’s most coveted and is voted for by the 260,000 readers of the automobile magazine group “Auto Bild” and the Sunday newspaper “Bild am Sonntag” in Germany.

MERC E-CLASS CABRIOLET – SPORTY AND ELEGANT The E-Class Cabriolet from Mercedes-Benz makes an emphatic statement in the luxury convertible segment. Clear lines and distinctive forms are prevalent in the E-Class Cabriolet – from the dynamic, arrowed front to the muscular rear end giving the car impressive head-turning presence. PORSCHE PANAMERA – EXQUISITE HANDLING The Panamera, is a Porsche through and through, with all the expected attributes, including driving comfort and exquisite handling and steering with no body roll to speak of, all thanks to Active Suspension Management, which proffers variable ride control, and Variable Assist Power Steering, which directs the car where it’s pointed. Let’s start with the exterior first. The Panamera is long, wide and low. It has a beautifully contoured hood as well as its face is flanked by lunging fenders. The LED headlights are placed relatively low and give it a jewelled look on an otherwise quite traditional appearance. All the Porsche dynamic goodness is passed along: strong brakes, sharp steering, and move-over-pavement-I’m-in-charge handling. For luxury-sedan drivers who prefer pace over highway poise, the Panamera is the perfect tool. It features a baby bottom-smooth seven-speed PDK tranny with double-clutching capabilities. So it’s a good thing that braking is sure and on point, helped by Porsche Stability Management with ABS, and six and fourpiston calipers on front and rear, respectively.

DIY - HOME IMPROVEMENT

SMART IDEAS GIVE YOUR BATHROOM A MAKEOVER IN 15 SIMPLE AND EASY STEPS… 1. GET RID OF CLUTTER Take out everything - yes, everything, Out of your drawers and cupboards, off counters, and out of the medicine cabinet. It should look the way it did when you first moved in. Choose only the musthaves and find the most convenient place to put them. Anything that is not essential should go out. The point here is to get rid of those things you don’t really need. This won’t cost you anything and can make quite the difference. 2. EVERYTHING NEEDS A PLACE AND NEEDS TO REMAIN THERE You really can’t have too many towel bars in a bathroom! They will discourage dumping used towels in a pile on the floor. If you have extra wall space,

76 AUGUST 2012

put one there. If you can have a towel bar for each member of the family, each person will know their towel is fresh and personal. Or consider hanging a bar behind the door or over the toilet. Be sure the bar is placed so that any towel will not hang over heating vents. Hotel-style towel racks are available in home improvement or bath decorating stores. The extra shelves they provide can display colourful, thirsty towels. 3. ORGANISE A CLEANING KIT. Gather some bathroom cleaning supplies and store them in a tote under a sink or in an upper cupboard. Get smaller size spray bottles if space is an issue. Install child-proof latches if you have small children at home.

4. GET CREATIVE Cut long strips from a matching sheet and sew along the bottom of inexpensive towels to give a custom look. You can brag to all your friends about how you made custom towels ‘with your own little hands.’

make your bathroom look fancy but brighten it up.

5. SHELVE IT If you have a metal shelving unit in your garage, repurpose it for the bathroom! Paint it a glossy red or black with a can of spray paint and use it for towel and toiletry storage! Add some scented candles and baskets full of decorative soaps or maybe even fancy toiletries for an inviting look.

10. ACCESSORIES FROM AROUND THE HOUSE Search the house for accessories to use in your bathroom. Roll up hand towels in a rack. Use a pretty mug for cosmetic brushes or cotton swabs. Stand a picture on the counter in a metal plate holder. Choose a pretty candy dish in place of a plastic soap dish. A crystal or metal tray can serve to keep perfume bottles together. Candle holders with coloured candles and pretty vases with flowers or greens will make the bathroom look more attractive.

6. ADD FLAIR Give your bathroom a burst of colour by tiling one wall with another colour and adding matching accessories. If tiling isn’t an option, add accessories of a contrasting colour to add a little funk.

9. SCENT IT UP You can never have too many candles, add a few decorated scented candles for an aesthetic feel.

7. FLOWER POWER Add a few strategically placed decorative flowers or potted plants in your bathroom to brighten up the mood and bring in that nature like fresh feel.

11. PUT THE TRASH OUT OF SIGHT Our first recommendation is to put the trash in a basket hidden in a cupboard out of sight. If that’s not possible, be sure to place an attractive basket or metal can where it is convenient to use. Don’t choose a clear plastic one! Who wants to look at used tissue or soap wrappers?

8. SUBTLE SHADES Decorative lamps with shades can be used in the bathroom to soften the lighting. This will not only

12. SHOWER CURTAINS Add new shower curtains. Whilst choosing your shower curtain, remember it’s the biggest source

of colour other than your walls, consider one with nice patterns and designs, or a solid complementing colour. 13. THROW IN A FEW RUGS Purchase rugs for the bathroom floor that match the towel colours. You need at least one rug in front of the bathtub. Placing rugs by the sink and toilet are optional, depending on the size of the bathroom. 14. PERSONALISE Find some unique way to personalise your bathroom. Adding a thrift shop dresser as a storage solution or a sink vanity can really look classy. Collections, such as antique bottles or containers, can be artfully arranged on a shelf as a design statement while also serving as holders for lotions and speciality soaps. 15. THE GUEST BATHROOM if you are getting the guest bathroom ready, make sure you provide it with basic bathing essentials like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soaps, etc. You could also keep a few disposable razors or even a shaving kit. In case your guest forgets, you could provide them with a toothbrush, toothpaste and even a hair dryer.
