CELEBRATING LOVE Last month saw the launch of the first issue of The Woman, from the house of Al Mar’a. This month, we take the opportunity to thank you for your valuable feedback. The responses have been overwhelming indeed. We’re glad that most of you liked us in our new avatar, that totally symbolises the evolving you. We’ve also received a few suggestions on how we could improve further. And let’s tell you, for us too, every month is a learning process and you’ll see your magazine the way you want it to be, reflecting your values, ideals, interests and thoughts. February is the month of love. When the team sat down to plan the theme, many discussions and debates happened. While some thought the whole thing was a cliché, the ‘married’ types were of the opinion that it was the perfect occasion to spend with their loved ones, give and receive gifts. Until one feisty young lady proclaimed, “Love can never be overrated. Love is love!” That was it. End of discussion. Yes, since love can never be overrated, we have for you a beautiful Valentine’s Day spread! Each section has something interesting on the theme of ‘love’ – a subtle question inserted within an interview, gift ideas galore, a D-I-Y concept or an entire story on the superheroes women love… the spirit of love has been interwoven with a lot of thought and creativity. Also check out the special Valentine’s Day calendar which has some exciting gifts from Bourjois up for grabs! There’s a lot of other interesting stuff too! A Venetian journey, delectable recipes, info on Tai Chi and much more! We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did putting the issue together.

SURPRISE OF SURPRISES I was eagerly waiting for my New

Year’s copy of Al Mar’a and what do I see? The Woman on my table! I was stunned and did not for a moment even think that it was my favourite magazine in a new avatar. And only when I reached the edit page, I realised that it was the English edition of Al Mar’a which was now reborn as The Woman. I loved the look and feel of the magazine, and the way the articles were put together in different sections. I particularly liked the feature on Parenting and the quotes from the women achievers at the Al Mar’a Excellence Awards. But I must also commend you on a good and sumptuous spread – when it came to reading. Looking forward to celebrating the different shades of a woman and also the new ‘evolving me’. Way to go, Al Mar’a. SAMAH AL RIYAMI - QURUM

GREAT LOOK What a pleasant New Year surprise! Al Mar’a becomes The Woman. When I first heard of it, I was a little sceptical about what my favourite women’s magazine would undergo in its transformation. But I was glad that you continue to

RAISING HOPE Stepping into parenthood has always been a beautiful experience for every couple. But raising children in this fast paced, materialistic world has often proven to be a very difficult task for them. Reading the feature on raising children and the essence of family values, made my day! Being a parent myself, I could relate to most the things that were said. I particularly liked the way the families emphasised on the ‘responsibility’ word. This will surely stand them in good stead as they grow up.

FAIRY TALE!

Princess Diaries has always been on top of my favorite movies list since its release way back in 2001. It’s been 11 years and I still adore the movie. Anne Hathaway was more than comfortable playing the character of Princess Amelia and gave full justice to the part she played. She has come a long way from playing the gawky awkward princess to the oh-so chic and sensuous Catwoman. She’s the perfect example of how a ‘girl-next-door’ could transform herself into a damsel and carry the image with panache! RANI RAWAT - DARSAIT

MORALE BOOSTER

Whenever I’m low or not in my element, I invariably end up in the kitchen cooking a comforting meal for myself that instantly boosts my morale! But it often happens that when we cook comfort food, we forget to keep in mind the nutritional value. Going through the recipies featured in your magazine, I was amazed that comfort food could also have healthy options! Now, I can gorge on French fries without feeling the guilt. e all have our favourite superheroes (and heroines!), don’t we? Characters that have filled our childhood with a lot of happiness and continue to bring a smile on our faces! Largerthan-life images we’ve always looked up to! The lessons we’ve learnt from them… the triumph of good over evil, the importance of keeping the faith and living with hope and so much more! Why do we need superheroes? Well, in this age of cynicism, it’s nice to believe in something that makes us feel good and happy and brings out the child in us. The Woman asked a cross-section of women on who their favourite superhero was… Here are some interesting answers.

FEBRUARY 2012

Flying, climbing walls and super human strength are all great but I’ve always envied ‘The Invisible Woman’ from the Fantastic Four for the power to turn invisible. While not entirely invincible, she can spy undercover and has the element of surprise over her enemies. This definitely gives her an edge over the rest. Plus she is part of a team unlike a lot of other super heroes who are doomed to operate on their own and forced to keep their identities hidden. Susan Storm is beautiful, strong, outspoken and can hold her own among her colleagues. Plus she gets to lead a fairly normal life.

There’s been a lot of discussion over the years among the ever-so-passionate comic readers and movie goers over what superhero is the best. And, considering what a popular topic that is, arguments were bound to happen. Those remembering their childhood dreams happily embraced the Green Lantern’s abilities. Some argued the simple human courage of Batman to be the ultimate epitome of a superhero. Others praised the hot underwear fashion of Superman. To each his own, they say. Unfortunately, a realist born and raised, such ‘superhero-inspired-sentiments’ almost always eluded me. Until I became a mother, that is. And like any woman who has a son in pre-school, I never fail to pick up various merchandise with that famous red-blue superhero for him. Well, if there was such a thing as superhero of the year election, my vote would go to Spiderman! Just to make my son happy! TATIANA SHESTAKOVA

SHYLINE D’MELLO

Sherlock Holmes! I wish I had half his wit... I’m fascinated by this fictional character. The mind behind this man is astonishing. The ability to see what is hidden - from a glance a crime can be solved, from a word the truth can be told, from an action the world is already a better place. This man has a mind that looks over every detail which is outstanding. The genius’s inventions and experiments that enable him to solve crimes are fascinating. He is not afraid of experimenting on himself and he is always motivated to do better and try new things. This is the character that I adore and I wish I could be as smart, motivated and talented as him.

ALIA EZZADIN ABDULLAH

Is it a bird, a plane? No, it’s Superman! My superhero! Besides being a saviour of the world, what I like the most about him is his love for his adopted planet, the depth of his feelings for his lady love and his sacrifice. Superman embodies all these and more. AMITA RAO

COVER STORY

Ever since I was child, Batman has been my favourite superhero. Everyone liked the more colourful, flying guy, but I preferred the dark and mysterious Batman. He is flawed, he is neither invincible nor undefeatable, but can keep up with all the super powered villains. Nobody can be superman, but everyone, can dream of being Batman, all you have to do is try hard enough.

LAMYA AL KIYUMI

I have never been much of a hero worshipper or the girl with posters on her wall so when asked about my favourite superhero character I took the sign that the first one that sprang to mind was my favourite. Wonder Woman! Although she is the least known she seems to be the one I remember most. I am attributing that to the sheer brilliance of her outfit! What do you expect? I’m in fashion! I loved everything about it and to this day I adore red boots, though I’ve yet to own a pair! She had it all, brains, beauty, compassion, independence and all with style. Maybe I do have a hero after all!

COVER STORY

My superhero is Ironman. It’s quite an unconventional choice but I do really look up to him! He’s charming, witty and well, he also has the superpowers to save the world from evil. He’s a billionaire and a playboy but when it comes to saving the world, there’s no one really like him. He’s smart and every girl’s dream come true. And I wish he were for real!

SANA RAHIM

Mrs. Incredible (or Elastigirl!) is my favourite superhero. From settling into the role of being a dedicated mom and housewife, I love how she reclaims her super hero identity and pulls her family together as a team!

ZIANA QAISER

My favourite superhero will have to be Batman. He is not born with super powers. He is a human being who happens to be successful and is using his wealth and talent to protect the people in his city. Though he has a dark past, that has not stopped him from wanting to do good things and serve his community to the best of his abilities. He is someone that you can identify with because his quests are more realistic. Not that I would encourage anyone to be storming Muscat with a mask and cape. He has a great sense of humour and is definitely a man of mystery which makes him all the more intriguing. Charity begins at home and in Batman’s case, that’s Gotham city.

Meet Hazar and Hanadi Al Zadjali, the designer duo and the brains behind Boutique Muscat...

PERFECT

BLEND

there is a gap in the Oman market in terms of women finding the variety they are looking for, and we decided to try and fill that gap. We were an online boutique for a year-and-a-half before venturing into opening our store in MQ. Social media websites like Facebook played an important role in supporting the business! I (Hazar) started designing when Boutique Muscat started three to four years ago, and since then it has been a fantastic experience! My inspiration comes from Omani fabrics and I have been using them to create my outfits whether it is a day dress, a casual dinner top or a funky evening dress! Eventually after the first two years, I decided that it was a good idea to try and design professionally so I travelled to take some short design courses. Boutique Muscat still offers unique products in small quantities (not more than three pieces of each design) from all over the world, alongside our own brand.

T

he sisters are wellknown designers who are most sought-after for their exclusive creations. Boutique Muscat is a wonderful fashion stop for the fashionista who wants to keep up with the latest trends. Hazar also provides us some interesting information on how it all began 12 FEBRUARY 2012

and what they are looking forward to in the future.

THE FIRST COLLECTION… The first collection comprised three-fourth length dresses that used Omani fabrics, and some tops.

FORAY INTO DESIGNING… We are both working women who enjoy being busy! With full-time jobs and a start-up business, things can get hectic. The initial idea took root after we returned to Oman after completing our studies abroad. We realised that

THE INSPIRATIONS… Omani fabrics are the main inspiration! The colours are just so attractive and since you can’t wear traditional Omani outfits every day, and they are now mostly kept for really special occasions, I thought that we could

use a bit of that ‘beauty’ for our daily wear! To start with, there is always a concept! But sometimes once you start designing, the fabric guides you elsewhere! THE EXPERIENCE… We cater to all ages and tastes; we’ve designed for two-year-olds as well 50-year-olds. And we are happy to say that it’s been a satisfying experience for all. I would describe the collections as stylish; unexpected colours that go together and are great must-haves that fit into any contemporary woman’s wardrobe. FASHION SCENE IN MUSCAT… Women are different everywhere. Some prefer new trends while others swear by the classic. We try to cater to different tastes. ARE YOU INTO JEWELLERY AS WELL? We actually do not design jewellery; we have our designers abroad that display jewellery at Boutique Muscat. But we have specifically designed the Oman bracelet that has been our ‘best-seller’. It was initially for the 40th national day, but we’ve reproduced it many times thereafter. FAVOURITE FASHION LINES… We are interested in many upcoming designers and high street fashion such as Amina K from Egypt, Raja Dano from Saudi, Manar al Hinai, Kutiel Fashion and Aeniss Euniss. But if you are talking haute couture, Elie Saab, Chanel and Gucci would be among our favourites! FASHION TRENDS YOU THINK WILL BE THE RAGE THIS YEAR? Elegant, colourful three-fourth and Maxi lengths, printed materials and texture will be the highlights this year.

Hazar and Hanadi have used silk chiffons, cottons and mixed Omani silk (braysam) to great effect in this scintillating collection. It’s classic, casual and ‘gently’ bold. What makes this collection distinct is the contrast in colours. It also features two of their bestselling creations, the electric blue shirt and the Khanjar belt.

GLAM UP - INTERVIEW

22 FEBRUARY 2012

LABOUR OF LOVE Bashar and Imane Nasri tell The Woman the story behind Dorin, one of the oldest French brands…

I

t’s wonderful to meet the people behind a brand that dates back to the 18th century. Bashar Nasri, Chief Executive Officer of Maison Dorin and his wife Imane have been instrumental in keeping alive this exceptional brand that stands for tradition, art and innovation. Bashar and Imane were in Oman recently to launch the new collection of the Dorin D’or - Gold Dorin – a limited edition collection of the classic bottles of ‘Un air’.

“To know about the brand is to know about its rich history. Dorin is one of the oldest brands in France and has had the honour being nominated as the official supplier of beauty and fragrances to the Court of Versailles. Such was the popularity of the brand that if a lady wanted to buy a lipstick, she would always ask for a Dorin. In Japan, the ‘powder’ used by make-up artists was called a Dorin! Such was the popularity of the brand in those days!” says Bashar. But Maison Dorin lost its charm somewhere in between and after Bashar and Imane took it over in 1998, the prestigious House got the chance to shine again. The original inspiration and influences intrinsic to the excellence of the brand was re-introduced with great success. “We modernised and revived it and created a range of new fragrances for both men and women and now Dorin can be found in luxury stores all over the world. Un Air De Paris, Un Air de Damas and the sensual collection Un Air d’ Arabie became instant hits! Bashar is a fragrance aficionado. And there’s no stopping him when it comes to his favourite topic. He slips into one anecdote after another and what interests us most is his story of how perfume originated. “The story goes that in Europe when people wore leather to keep warm, it’d most often give out a foul or unpleasant smell. To counter this, leather goods manufacturers used to treat the leather with scents of lemon or flowers. These were used in gloves as well and smelt good. The

glove manufacturers actually became the first perfumers. In my fragrance, Un Air d’Amour, there are hints of Russian leather to which I’ve added the scent of lavender,” explains Bashar. Does he have many Arab influences as well? “As I am originally from Damascus, I’ve put in a lot of Arabic scents from roses, jasmines, tuberoses and fullah,” he adds. We also ask the couple about the Candle Light Collection launched in memory of Princess Diana. “I first created a candle in her memory that in turn inspired me to convert it into a fragrance that came in a gold and purple bottle. The purple signifies the rose grapefruit juice she drank every morning… so we had the top note of the fragrance with grapefruit and the bottom note with rose,” says Bashar. Imane has been quiet all this while, letting her husband do all the talking. But she plays a major role in propagating the brand by managing the Dorin Museum. Situated on the outskirts of Paris, in the town of Chatou, is the museum dedicated to beauty and perfumery. Here you will find a lot about the history, development and changes in skincare and beauty that Dorin, has innovated through the ages. “We’ve worked hand-in-hand to build the brand. There’s still a lot of research going regarding on the exact date of the brand’s origin. We have a huge collection of documents that show and prove the existence of the brand. It’s a work-in-progress that’s very interesting and educative as well.” she says. We veer the topic to Valentine’s Day and the couple’s concept of love. According to Bashar, ‘it’s become a commercial and marketing proposition and one does not need just one day to express love’. Imane too feels the same and says, “The concept of love should exist throughout the year and not only for one day.” (Maison Dorin fragrances are available at all Capital Store outlets.)

This question is tricky because you have to take into consideration the eye colour, as well as the client’s personal preferences with regards to comfort with colours. It takes a lot more than just giving generic tips for different eye make-up tips for different skin tones.

HOW IS THE DIOR NEW LOOK DIFFERENT?

First and foremost, the result will be maximum definition and a more precise application thanks to a unique nano brush. Each of the lashes even the smallest will be lengthened and curved and they will look really more numerous and spread out. Plus this mascara contains the Lash Multiplier Formula which acts both at the root of the lash and on its fibre for instant repairing action and a regenerative action day after day. DIORSHOW NEW LOOK

2012 draws inspiration from the original values of the Dior “New Look” with an exceptional mascara: Diorshow New Look. Born from the combination of an original nano-brush and a high-precision, serum treatment formula, Diorshow New Look multiplies volume lash by lash, both instantly and on a daily basis. It has an exceptional capacity for widening all eyes, whatever their shape, whatever their lash length. Astounding amplitude is guaranteed, in the dizzying flutter of an eyelash. Diorshow New Look dresses the eyes in three, breathtakingly deep shades: New Look Black, New Look Brown and New Look Blue. They were the stars of Spring 1947, and now the four emblematic shades of the New Look have been reinvented at the heart of the cult, Dior 5 Couleurs palette. Royal Kaki, Rose Porcelaine, Grège and Bleu de Paris, this is Haute Couleur with an updated twist for 2012, which works in conjunction with Diorshow New Look to glorify all the depth of the eyes, metamorphosing their volume.

WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT

Naturally straight hair with volume was one of the key looks at all the season’s top fashion shows, with models from Blumarine, Balmain, Chloe and Aquascutum sporting this ‘gorgeous looking’ trend. Definitely one of the most wearable and popular looks of the moment, the Natural Straight style looks and feels easy and relaxed but seems difficult to achieve. Now you can get the look everyone is talking about… Inspiration: Penelope Cruz, Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson through to Nicole Kidman, Olivia Palermo and Cheryl Cole. To our mind, Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively wears it best.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK

• Add mousse to freshly washed, towel dried hair. Make a centre parting, then blow dry all hair using your fingers to straighten. Lift the hair at the roots for volume. • To keep the volume in the straightened hair it’s best to start at the top section of the hair. Take a small section, place the tool underneath the area as close to the root as possible. Move the Philips Natural Straight down the hair moving it in an arc. This helps to add volume as you straighten. • When the top part is done roll it

up and clip it on top of the head. This keeps it out of the way and helps set in the volume while you work on the hair underneath. • When all the hair is straightened, brush through with a natural bristle brush. Finish with hairspray. • By day, wear this style soft and loose with the ends flicked under. • By night, maximise the volume with ends and layers kicked up and flicked out.

the styler’s innovative brush and ceramic plate design smoothes hair while enhancing natural volume and shine. It also has a built-in tension control to smooth hair without tangling.

TOP TIPS

Understand: This look works well on most hair types especially thicker, curly or slightly frizzy hair. Care: This style is all about hair that is full of life and body so the Philips Natural Straight’s 200°C is the perfect styling temperature to use. If you heat the hair up too much then it will become too flat for this style. Create: To smooth hair, gently brush from root to tip with the Philips Natural Straight, while to add volume, style in the same way but in an upward motion.

THE PRODUCT

In step with the trends, Philips Haircare has developed the Philips Natural Straight – a completely new tool that is easy and intuitive to use. Forget wrestling with a variety of tools (blow-dry with round brush, ineffective airstylers, etc),

“You and I cannot think of surviving on a dollar a day. But there are about a billion people who survive on a dollar a day or less. To survive in such conditions requires you to be really innovative and creative. Unfortunately all this innovation and creativity is locked up.” The Grandest Challenge by Prof. Abdallah Daar, and his colleague Peter Singer addresses this and ways to bridge the gap between the developing and the developed world by unlocking the ingenuity that’s an inherent part of the human psyche. In this revelatory book, the two scientists argue that the revolution in bio-technology can save millions of lives but only if we find a way to bring knowledge and treatments out of labs and into the world’s most remote villages. Deepa Rajan met with Prof. Abdallah Daar to know more about this interesting facet and the role women can play in the larger cause.

BE THE

ON THE BOOK The Grandest Challenge begins with a simple premise: that every person’s life is of equal value regardless of where in the world he or she lives. Says Prof. Abdallah Daar: “The world does not know

how unequal it is particularly in health. Health and wealth are interlinked and reenforce each other. The question arises as to how it is possible to improve the situation using modern science and technology. This is the first book that I have written that talks to the layperson. It also aims at encouraging the youth to be more aware of what they could do to make a difference in the world in areas of global health. “A few years ago, Thomas Freidman wrote The World is Flat in which he talks about information and communication technology. Our book says that the ‘world has indeed become flat’ in terms of innovation in life sciences. Our book stands apart because it is the first to talk experientially about the intersection among global health issues, life sciences and entrepreneurship opportunities in this sector.” WOMEN AND HEALTH SCIENCES Prof. Daar says that it’s imperative to create an eco-system that facilitates innovation. When asked what role a woman can play in the process, he replies: “I believe that a woman has a huge potential to be a leader in whatever field she chooses to be in. For example in Africa, if women had more property rights, for example, if they actually owned the land that they farm, children would have access to better education and lifestyle. The greatest investment that we can do as a society is to educate our young women and thus give them the power to become equal partners in progress.” He opines that India has been at the forefront when it comes to innovation and cites the example of Biocon, an Indian company founded and led by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw which made insulin more affordable worldwide and easily accessible

to the masses. Kiran is now the wealthiest woman in India. “Closer home, Qatar leads by example, creating an eco-system in education, right from the pre-primary level up to the postdoctorate level. Its champion is Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, a visionary who is genuinely interested in the development of society and is willing to take risks. We need such champions all over the Gulf and it can definitely be women!” “My advice to young women looking for a career in life sciences should be to seize the opportunities, be it in research, the corporate sector or any other field. In the West a lot of bio-tech companies and research centres are run by women and I don’t see any reason why women of the Gulf should be any different.” WOMEN’S HEALTH – THE GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE “Let’s start by talking about maternal and child statistics. At present, about eight million children die each year under the age of five. While this is better than a few years ago, we have made very little impact in survival of neonates. It is important to appreciate that the health of neonates is very much related to their mother’s health during pregnancy and childbirth. This is even so in diabetes, for if in pregnancy the mother is malnourished the child is likely to develop diabetes. About 350,000 women die every year at childbirth and my book too talks about this. Women need to be more educated as ‘consumers of health services’. Cultural impediments also play a major role in affecting a woman’s health. Change is important but it cannot happen overnight. Messages need to be refined, timely and appropriate.”

THE ‘SAVING BRAINS’ PROJECT “This initiative focuses on effective solutions to promote early childhood brain development and long-term human capital formation in the face of poverty. As many as 200 million children fail to reach their full potential as a result of exposure to risk factors – malnutrition, infection, poor management of pregnancy, birth complications, and lack of stimulation and nurturing – in the first thousand days (from conception to two years of age). Targeted interventions may help unlock the potential of the next generation of children – and provide their countries with an exit strategy from poverty.” The Grandest Challenge looks at the bigger picture. It is not just about global health and equal access of health services. It is also about the active and ethical involvement of the private and the public sectors in innovating to tackle global health issues. At the outset the issues dealt with may seem very academic and therefore intimidating, but then The Grandest Challenge is perhaps the simplest of all reads. Says Prof. Daar, “It was a challenge for my colleague and I as academics to make the book as non-technical as possible, but in the end I think we have managed to make the book and its many fascinating stories of events and the great people we met on our journey very accessible to the interested public. ” Indeed, the book is enlightening, solution-oriented and deeply personal and it encourages the reader to challenge existing norms and mistaken beliefs and ask the vital question: What can I do to make a difference? Perhaps, just an idea is enough!

Born in Tanzania, Professor Abdallah S. Daar started off at medical school in Uganda and then left for the University of London, moving on to Texas, then back to Oxford, then UAE and finally Oman, where he was Professor and Head of Dept of Surgery at Sultan Qaboos University. He is currently Professor of Public Health Sciences and of Surgery at the University of Toronto and also holds several other posts internationally. The book The Grandest Challenge: Taking Life-Saving Science from Lab to Village is available in Oman at WH Smith and can also be downloaded on Kindle from www.amazon.com. The book reached No.1 on the amazon.ca international non-fiction bestseller list and No.6 in the same category on amazon.com. You can connect with Prof. Daar on Twitter: @abdallahdaar.

SLICE OF LIFE - EXPERIENCE

A

sk any journalist and she’ll tell you that doing a story is an experience in itself. Certain experiences turn out to be eyeopeners as well. Like the day I attempted to learn golf. I’ve never been much of a sports person. My idea of exercise is usually to pick up a book everyday from my bookshelf, hold it and read late into the night. No. I’ve not even developed biceps this way. I do walk, whenever I feel upto it. So when it was suggested I try my hand at golf… I was a bit sceptical. I was woefully out of shape. And hardly knew a thing about the game. And no, I had never been on a golf course before. So, the term, ‘a complete novice’ fitted me to a T(ee)! My turf was the Almouj Golf at The Wave Muscat, a beautiful 18-hole, Par 72 links style golf course designed by Greg Norman. Running alongside a six-kilometre stretch of ocean frontage, the 7,342-yard course of lush green grass is peppered with bunkers, water hazards and natural dunes.

Chris Jones, a PGA Professional was to be to my instructor. I didn’t tell him he had a tough job on his hands. I was sure he already knew that. However, I did mention in passing that I had played cricket during my childhood and that’s the closest I ever came to swinging anything. He laughed and remarked that it was tough to turn cricketers into golfers. I prayed that I should not make a fool of myself. Chris began with a brief introduction on some of the technicalities of the game like the number of clubs used and picked up No. 9 for me, the rookie! In a few minutes, I learnt why posture and grip was very important for the ball to swing. And I was ready for my first swing. I lifted the club to the angle I thought I’d learnt and was dreaming of the ball flying up high and into the greens like I’d seen on television. But my first swing was a dud. There was no contact at all. The ball remained on the ground, while a piece of grass, or rather a sand wedge had ‘flown’ some distance. Atleast the club had not flown out of my hands! Chris corrected my stance, grip and a straight left arm and the bent of the right wrist worked out the right

swing for me. And soon, the ball actually began soaring towards the fairway. And when I heard the thwack, I was thrilled. All the while, Chris also explained some of the nuances of the game and at the end of 40 minutes, I had learnt and understood some of them, atleast those meant for a beginner.

TIME

Later, Chris took us on a tour of the course and I soaked in the natural beauty of the settings. The water, grass and sand offer golfers a variety of strategic play options with spectacular views of the Gulf of Oman and the Al Hajar mountains.

Almouj Golf has a first-ofits-kind Academy run by PGA qualified instructors, a state-of-the-art swing studio as well as a restaurant, a flood-lit driving range offering private teaching bays and a fully-equipped Pro Shop. At the end of the experience, I asked Chris whether I’d passed muster. He said something to the effect that my ‘hand-eye coordination’ was good. That for me, a golf novice, was a big compliment. Would I go back for more? Definitely! Where and how else can I have a real ‘swinging’ time?

SLICE OF LIFE - WELL-BEING

Dr. Prema Seshadri is a psychologist, writer and entrepreneur

Break free! Love, if understood right is experienced as freedom and hence has the propensity to be expressed tacitly but with its inherent sweetness, says Dr. Prema Seshadri

In an almost ambivalent way, human beings thrive on confusion and contradiction! More than three decades ago, Ryan O’Neil and Ali McGraw reduced us to tears by saying “love means never having to say you are sorry”. There was an enthusiastic nod of affirmation from my generation and when we got together for that ‘run-away-from-reality’ cuppa and chat, we spoke of this highly evolved, idyllic and almost surreal form of love that doesn’t call for apologies. But like all things surreal, this too had to burst. The first thing we did on reaching home to a waiting family was apologising to them for coming home a little late! And now at the other extreme, we are saying that sorry comes easy when we love! What really goes into the whole process of love? What does sorry really mean? Why do we really apologise anyway?

comes with a list of cravings and aversions. One seeks, anticipates and expects situations that would bring satisfaction and happiness and the absence of those situations would cause dissatisfaction and distress. Strangely, it completely blows to pieces Herzberg’s theory of need satisfaction!

Google ‘love’ and nine billion sites open up. And look for definition of ‘love’ and over 200 million sites are there for our understanding. That perplexes me somewhat. How can you define an innate nature? It is definitely possible to describe its manifestation in behavioral terms but how does one define a value that is far too subterranean and complex to be couched in some descriptive words, however evocative they may be. And if characterisation of an over-used word like love is in itself difficult, how does one judge what should be a categorical progression of ‘love’?

Since love is innate, it calls for no effort to express it. It comes through naturally in all our words and action. The tendency of human beings is to overexpress and under-experience this inherent nature. In doing so, we kill our very being which is made up of love. Instead, it is worth everything in life to experience and express love, and may be even all its shenanigans, with awareness and joy.

If one understood and took ‘love’ to be not an emotional state but the very nature of man itself, then the focus would not be on whether love should in any way get entangled with expectations. When we use ‘love’ as a title tagged to a relationship, whether it be to a person, a situation, or a cause, then insidiously and inevitably, it will come packaged with demands and expectations. Therein lies misery. For instance, a parent loves her child because it’s her child, and that then

44 FEBRUARY 2012

Love, understood right is experienced as freedom and hence has the propensity to be expressed tacitly but with its inherent sweetness. The articulation is spontaneous and genuine. The act will carry an innocence, which is truly most endearing and long lasting leaving no room for ambiguity, whether love drives one to convey a deep-felt regret or remorse, or love inspires one to understand and accept a silently conveyed apology.

WHAT REALLY GOES INTO THE WHOLE PROCESS OF LOVE? WHAT DOES SORRY REALLY MEAN?

SLICE OF LIFE – WORKWISE

e all talk of that often elusive work-life balance and half our lives are spent in juggling both the home and work fronts. But what happens if both you and your spouse work together? Does it make things easier or difficult? Or does the personal spill over into the professional? And where does one find the balance? Or can one confidently say, ‘A couple who works together stays together?’

W

Having a married couple in the office comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. So if you are planning on working with your spouse, it’s best if you are aware of the pros and cons.

Why you should work together – the upsides It’s about the money The financial aspect puts things into perspective if you’re working together. If you’re both working for the same company, you may benefit from bonuses or other incentives that may occur at the same time, leaving you to plan your financial future accordingly. It also allows you to travel to work together, cutting down on the cost of commuting. The support factor Having your spouse working with you would also mean a shoulder

to lean on, when things get tough. Since you both are aware of each other’s work environment and situation, you can always offer support in times of a stressful situation. Understanding and acceptance of situations is much better. Time together With most of us spending an inordinate amount of time at work, a couple in the same office do get to spend some quality time together. They can meet for lunch or a quick coffee and find out from each other, how their day has been. Whether you wish to share some good news, crib or vent, your partner is close at hand. Time off When a couple works together, they can also plan their holidays accordingly. Most often, people working in different companies find this a huge problem. The family, of course, benefits from this time together. Also, after office time, the couple can plan to see a movie or a play together or enjoy time with each other over dinner. They can also plan their shopping or other chores easily.

Why you shouldn’t work together – the downsides Jealousy We’re all human and jealousy does

In life and at work… do couples who share the same workplace have it easy or are at a disadvantage? The Woman lists the pros and cons…

TOGETHER, AT WORK! 46 FEBRUARY 2012

rear its head. When it comes to the workplace, often appreciation for one’s spouse doing better than the other can cause problems in the relationship. This also happens if one is more popular and a favourite with the bosses. Also, being too friendly with colleagues can also cause misunderstandings. Stress If both partners are undergoing the same levels of stress, they are most likely to take it out on each other. This is likely to spill over into their private lives and put a strain on the relationship. Stress could also lead to serious arguments. The trick here is to not let it get to you. Learn to differentiate… this way things become easier to handle. Competition If both husband and wife work in the different teams, there may be times when competition can get the better of their relationship. This may lead to friction where both of them can carry the baggage home to the family.

Social circle Married couples in the same office tend to socialise mainly with their colleagues. There is no variety when it comes to interacting with people. They stick to cliques or groups within the office. Same days Both husband and wife have the same experiences, day after day. Life may thus become predictable and boring. There’s nothing different to talk about after office hours. It’s hard to generate a discussion on new topics and mostly conversations are centred around work-related issues. Whatever the pros and cons, one must remember that work is an important part of life, but not life itself. There are other important things in life that will nurture and make your relationship grow. A little common sense, practicality, a lot of trust and confidence in the relationship will go a long way to ensure that workplace life runs smoothly, day after day. Good luck!

HEARD ON THE GRAPEVINE…

Top of the pops

Nancy Ajram does it again! The Lebanese singer has won the World Music Award for the second time in running. Her recent album Nancy 7 is already a chart-buster and this award reinforces the fact that she is hugely popular and her music well liked. Currently, she is all set to visit Italy and wow her fans and audiences there. What can we say, except that she is a global phenomenon!

48 FEBRUARY 2012

Role Play

Now this is news! When we were all wondering who would be best suited to play the feisty Liz Taylor, we hear that Lindsay Lohan is ready for the part! The actor is right now doing community service and undergoing psychotherapy sessions, and if all goes well, she’ll be off probation at the end of March. And then, she’ll begin working on the new flick. Good luck!

Showstopper

We all know Ranbir Kapoor is quite the prankster but falling at ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone’s feet was a little too much! The actor left the public in a state of shock when he touched her feet while receiving an award recently. Both Subhash Ghai and Deepika were on stage to present the award to him for his rocking performance in Rockstar. He touched Ghai’s feet out of respect and went on touch Deepika’s too. The gossip mills have been working overtime on this one. Repentance, a prank or something else… We’re sure there will be more coming on this subject.

Cashing in

Another Friends reunion! Gosh! Aren’t you tired of hearing this all over again! Maybe he was probably kidding, but rumour is that Matt LeBlanc is all game for a reunion with his old mates somewhere down the line if the price is right. If you didn’t know already, the Friends cast made more than $1 million per episode back in the day! So good ol’ Matt was right when he said, “I wish… I could use the money!” What’s that they say? Anything for money? Even if it’s a staid reunion that no one’s really expecting to hit big-time?

Strong comeback

For all Rani Mukherjee fans, this is a piece of good news. The latest buzz is that she’s being considered for Yash Raj’s Dhoom 3. According to reports she will be paired opposite Aamir Khan whom we already think may be quite different from the other ‘Dhoom’ heroes. With a ‘thinking’ Rani Mukherjee and even ‘more thinking’ Aamir, the film sure’s going to provide a lot of food for thought.

Firm decision

This one is on another popular Arab singer, Elissa! She has recently denied rumours that she will be singing the theme song for an upcoming television series starring Egyptian actress Ghada Abd Al Raziq. She says that she sticks to her decision for not singing for television or films. Let’s hope she stays true to what she says!

Sport & Fun

Have you seen recent photos of Elle Macpherson? The 47year-old supermodel looks fantastic and very young. What’s her secret? Well, she’s very much into sports which keeps her healthy and fit. What’s her workout rule? The star says: “Do lots of sport. Don’t worry about your silhouette, worry about how you feel. That’s what I ask myself: ‘How do I feel today?’” And the star does not obsess over her diet. She surfs; snow skis, rides a horse, hikes and is majorly into adventure sports. Truly the sporty kind, if we must say.

Bundle of joy

Guess who came calling at the Bachchan household recently? Superstar Shah Rukh Khan who found time to visit the latest entrant into the Bachchan family, Abhishek and Aishwarya’s yet-to-be-named daughter who’s been christened for the time being as Beti B by the Indian media. Amitabh Bachchan wrote in his blog, “Rukh drops by to meet the ‘little one’, a few others too from the fraternity visit the still in wonder bundle… and we spend all our time in trying to spend as much time as possible with her! Simple pleasures of life.” So finally, have the two sides reached a truce?

New stylist

Kids today know everything. Even to dress up their mothers. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s two-year-old’s no different, as the tabloids would have us believe. Apparently the star really had it easy while deciding what to wear for the Golden Globes held last month. “It’s funny – I didn’t try on that many dresses. My two-year-old Charlotte walked in, picked up this dress and said, ‘Mama, wear this!’ And so I put it on and said ‘ok’!” Sarah we think can say goodbye to her regular stylist now!

BUZZ - SUPERSTARS

Teen romances, power couples or the on-off types, we present to you the hottest celebrity couples of 2012 and their love stories…

CRAZY STUPID

The romantic in all of us loves a good story, so from cute to just plain sizzlin’, from hot to hott-er, this month we’ve compiled a list of celebrity hook-ups that make our hearts race. We can’t guarantee that these particular romances will last, but boy, do these couples look good while they’re together!

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND JESSICA BIEL

He’s the dorky kid next door (N’ Sync anyone?) turned G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S and she’s one of those Hollywood beauties that sort of creeps up on you. You know the sort - tanned, doe eyed, long legged. This isn’t just any old Hollywood romance, these two are well on their way to tying the knot. Justin and Jessica (Jussica?) just got engaged over Christmas. They’re young, they’re definitely good looking and they’re both still taking Hollywood by storm. Biel recently starred in star studded holiday movie New Year’s Eve while Justin’s movie career has also recently taken off with box office successes such as Friends with Benefits charming audiences across the world. Hollywood’s latest power couple? Here’s hoping! 50 FEBRUARY 2012

ZOE SALDANA AND BRADLEY COOPER

Are they or aren’t they? That is the question. This couple wants to keep their relationship really low key, but it’s pretty much confirmed that the too-good looking-to-be-true pair is dating! Put away your broken hearts ladies and gentlemen, this means two of Hollywood’s most gorgeous faces are now off the market. Hangover star Bradley was voted People’s Sexiest Man in 2011, while Saldana shows off some serious acting skills (all the while looking stunning) in Columbiana. We’re wishin’ this particular pair works out, because well… can you imagine the kids?

KATE MIDDLETON AND PRINCE WILLIAM

What little girl doesn’t want to be a princess when she grows up? The Royal Wedding saw us all enraptured when Prince William finally married on again, off again girlfriend Kate Middleton. For those of us who remember the Diana-Charles wedding, the prince’s own do was a very poignant affair, maybe because we all know how the last one turned out! She was resplendent in white, he was beaming. They walked down the aisle as millions watched across the world and wished them well. This couple is in the list because it isn’t often that a pair brings the world together in a collective ‘Awww’ moment. Good luck Kate and Will! We’re rooting for you!

BUZZ - SUPERSTARS

SELENA GOMEZ AND JUSTIN BIEBER

Ah, is there anything quite like young love? This young teen couple is certainly the cutest thing around. Though not very inclined to talk about each other in interviews etc, their actions speak much louder than their words. The teens are often seen holding hands, eating out and just plain good ol’ dating. Though they’re not too worried about PDA like some of their older peers in the biz, they’re certainly keeping it classy and clean for their age. So far, there’s been no drama from the pair, unless of course you count the time Justin rented an entire Staples centre for a private screening of Titantic. When we heard about that particular date we both cringed and melted – here’s to young romance! We’ve all been there ladies, give it up for the pair!

EMMA STONE AND ANDREW GARFIELD

They’re going to be taking Hollywood by storm in July 2012 starring opposite each other in The Amazing Spiderman. But we already know that there will be chemistry. This power couple consists of two people who are both up and coming stars. Their Hollywood careers are just taking off. Radiant starlet Emma Stone charmed us in movies such as Easy A, and Garfield’s gawky young hotness in The Social Network was just too appealing to resist. This is a couple that resonates both charm and nerdiness; it’s an odd but lethal combination. Too adorable for words? Certainly! 52 FEBRUARY 2012

MORE THAN A WOMAN - PERSONA

EVERGREEN INDIAN SINGER USHA UTHUP TALKS TO REKHA BALAKRISHNAN ON ALL THINGS MUSIC…

56 FEBRUARY 2012

HEART & SOUL

HOW DO YOU FIND PERFORMING IN MUSCAT? Muscat has a different ambience altogether. The feel, hospitality and cheer is definitely something else. It has the best of both worlds; the comfort of a ‘small town’ and the facilities and amenities of a big ‘world’. YOU CAN BE CALLED THE ETERNAL SINGER… HITS SIMPLY KEEP POURING IN… It’s absolutely fabulous that my music has been received so well. As I said, you’ve to keep reinventing yourself in such a way that it’s not an obvious reinvention; it should be something that people should be able to accept. One has to change with time, otherwise one gets left behind. I always make time my friend, so that works to my advantage. DO YOU THINK LISTENERS TODAY ARE NOT AS DISCERNING AS BEFORE? No. They are very discerning. Look at the amount of talent contests and reality shows. There are so many new singers coming to the fore. The point is everybody is looking for a change and when they see something new, they are happy about it. SOMETHING LIKE THE KOLAVERI DI SONG THAT HAS BECOME A PHENOMENAL HIT ALL OVER THE WORLD? Kolaveri Di is an amazing example of what I’ve been saying for years that music has no barriers of class, colour, creed, language, age or gender. I’m so glad it happened and I lived to tell the tale, 42 years ago, I began singing by including languages from every region. Which again brings us to the fact that people are looking for a change because it’s inevitable and without change, you can get stagnant. Getting to be No.1 or any other number is by far and large easier than staying there. MARKETING, ADVERTISING AND THE

INTERNET HAS CHANGED THE WAY MUSIC REACHES PEOPLE. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THIS? Yes, it has really changed everything because the internet can reach out to millions of people. But music will always be there, with or without strategy or marketing. With these inputs, music simply gets enhanced. DO YOU THINK MELODY HAS TAKEN A BACKSEAT? I don’t think melody will ever die simply because of the fact that rhythm cannot die. They both go hand in hand and without one, the other is lost. WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE INDIAN SINGERS? I like the younger lot very much. My favourites include Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Karthik, Hariharan, Kunal Ganjawala and others. I believe versatility and the ability to handle more genres is important in today’s world and many of them have these qualities in full measure. YOU HAVE ALSO BEEN A JUDGE ON TALENT SHOWS? HOW DO YOU FIND THE EXPERIENCE? Reality shows are amazing though I hate the word ‘judge’. I would like to be known as a mentor, friend or guide and that’s what I am. I feel it’s a great platform to help out somebody new. WHAT DOES VALENTINE’S DAY MEAN TO YOU? It’s very special because my grandson Riyad was born on that day. We call him Valentino and he’s really my Valentine. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE LOVE SONGS? There are so many. Killing Me Softly; Lately and from the Hindi movies, Hume Tumse Pyaar Kitna, Jidhar Dekho Teri Surat.

R&R - TRAVEL

A VENETIAN ODYSSEY

Queen of the Adriatic, City of Masks, City of Canals – call it what you may, but one thing’s for certain…once you’ve visited this magical city, you just can’t help but fall in love… The origin of Venice (or Venezia) goes back as far as 400 A.D. In fact, according to tradition, Venice is supposed to have formally come into existence at the stroke of noon on the March 25, 421 A.D. Apart from shoring up business interests, Venice was soon turning into a hub of art, culture, architecture and the likes. And despite the devastating floods in 1966, today Venice continues to be at the helm of music, art and crafts and one of the most favoured destinations in Italy.

58 FEBRUARY 2012

Tourists usually spend most of their time exploring the landmarks in and around the famous piazza San Marco. But for those who crave more than that, one can spend hours exploring the lovely narrow ‘calli’ (alleyways), discovering unsung artists and much more. Nonetheless, your first and most obvious stop would be the Basilica San Marco at the piazza San Marco. Your first glimpse of the beautiful Basilica is sure to be an

unforgettable experience – more so in the evening, when the mosaics on the façade glow in the light of the setting sun. The Romanesque sculptures, ornate arches and frescoes make it one of the most beautiful basilicas in the world. The interiors exude a certain mystery and splendour and exhibit some fascinating work by Venetian craftsmen including Titian and Tintoretto. The visit to the Basilica wouldn’t be complete without a look at the opulent Pala d’Oro (Gold Altar-piece). It was made in Constantinople in 976 on the orders of Doge Pietro Orseolo I and further enriched in later years with amethysts, emeralds, pearls, rubies, sapphires and topaz, topped off with a Gothic frame and resetting in 1345. The clock tower or Torre dell’Orologio features one of the earliest examples of a digital clock in the world. Recently reopened to tourists, the tour of the tower

allows you to explore the workings of the clock as well as take in the view over the piazza San Marco, the basilica and the palace. Next on our list of must visits, is the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace). If the basilica represents Venice’s spiritual elements, then the Palace is certainly representative of all things political and judicial. Despite the devastating fires in 1574 and 1577, the works have been restored and makes for a captivating tour. Stroll through the rooms and passageways of this unique Gothic structure and learn about the inner workings of the state. If guided tours aren’t your cup of tea, an audio guide works just as well. The Arco dei Foscari – a fine late-Gothic work, commissioned by Doge Francesco Foscari in 1438, built by Antonio Bregno and Antonio Rizzo; the ornate Scala d’Oro staircase by Jacopo Sansovino with stuccoes by Vittoria outlined in 24carat gold leaf; the Maps room (Sala

delle Mappe) and the State rooms with works by famous 16th century Venetian artists (Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Palma il Vecchio and Jacopo Bassano) are just some of the things worth checking out. And if you’re a history buff, chances are you will end up spending a good four to five hours at the Palace. If you happen to be a modern art aficionado, head for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, one of the most important museums in Italy, housing works ranging from surrealism, futurism and abstract expressionism. Expect works by Morandi, Giacometti, Emilio Vedova, Picasso, Duchamp, Brancusi, Calder and Jackson Pollock among others. During late afternoon, we’d suggest a tour of the three famous islands: Murano, Burano and Torcello. Murano, the closest island to Venice, is famous for its glassmaking industry. Tours usually include a visit to a typical glass factory to watch a master working on a glass piece. Torcello, situated just behind Burano, is famous for

its cathedral with spectacular Byzantine gold and stone mosaics. But Burano is perhaps the most interesting of the three. The island is peppered with houses of fishermen, painted in pastel colours (one colour representing one family or lineage). So make sure you keep your camera ready because this is the perfect place to take some fantastic shots. At Burano you can also buy some of Italy’s famed handmade lace items. Wind up your day shopping at the narrow zigzagging Mercerie running from Piazza San Marco to the Rialto Bridge. From highend boutiques (think: Hermès, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci) to glitzy art stores – there’s something for everyone. Pick up an authentic Venetian mask or some trinkets for your gal pals, you’re sure to find something unique to take back home. Venice is a city in full bloom. Music concerts, lazy gondola rides, sculptors at work – the vibe is spirited and we promise you’ll want to keep coming back for more.

PALATE - FOOD GUIDE

How well do you know your cuppa and the benefits it brings with it… The Woman gives you a tea break (up)…

W

hether the English swear by their Earl Grey, the Turkish by their apple tea on cold winter days, the Indians by their Darjeeling brew or the Chinese by their healthier options… tea, cha, chai is a favourite beverage around the world. Dip it, boil it or infuse it, the aroma of a cup of tea surely keeps you rejuvenated all day long. And going by research, it surely comes with a host of benefits too! Recent study suggests that tea has less caffeine than coffee, contains anti-oxidants, protects your bones, bolsters your immune system, keeps you hydrated, helps in reducing your risk of heart attack and stroke and increases your metabolism. But all these are achievable only if you do not go overboard on the sweetener, creamer or milk. Did you know that tea is the most common drink only next to water? The work in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and comes with extra health benefits.

Know your tea Tea comes in different types, varieties and flavours. Here are some of the common choices.

TEA TIME 62 FEBRUARY 2012

Black tea Tea is best drunk black and without sugar, is a common refrain from tea lovers who do not want the flavour of their tea to be ‘adulterated’ with milk and sugar. But do you know what black tea is? It’s a type of tea found all around the world. Made from the Camellia Sinensis leaves, black tea is often stronger in flavour

health tea. It has less caffeine than black or green tea, and far less than coffee. Green tea The word ‘green’ itself emphasises the fact that it’s all to do with health. This is the most common and has higher caffeine content than the other lesser oxidised teas like green tea, white tea and oolong tea. Black tea is used for improving mental alertness as well as learning skills. It is said to stimulise brain functions and also thinking and reasoning properties of the brain. Black tea has approximately half the amount of caffeine than a regular cup of coffee. So go black, go healthy! White tea White tea is made from immature tea leaves that are picked shortly before the buds have fully opened. The tea takes its name from the silver fuzz that covers the buds, which turns white when the tea is dried. This form of tea, like its other varients too has a lot of health benefits. It lowers blood pressure, helps strengthen bones and is a great stress buster! Because of its minimal processing, white tea contains more nutrients than its black or green options, making it the mightiest of the teas, the ultimate

Oolong tea Oolong tea is another healthy variety of tea. It is also known as “Wu-Long”. Similar to green teas, Oolong tea also originates from the Camellia Sinensis plant and undergoes similar processing steps. However, after the tea leaves are picked, they are intentionally bruised by shaking. Oolong tea is often used to reduce weight. It is also helpful for those suffering from high blood pressure. Studies also say that if you drink Oolong tea regularly, you are less likely to suffer from a heart disease because it dramatically decreases cholesterol in your system and rids it of the extra fat. One way of keeping yourself healthy is by religiously drinking a cup of Oolong tea. Bring on the Oolong! Apart from these four main varieties, there are a lot of different forms of ‘herbal teas’ which are a concoction of certain herbs, flowers or fruits with the four main varieties. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU

Discover the wonders of Tai Chi, an ancient martial art that leads you onto the fitness and wellness path with amazing benefits. By Leigh De Bruin

Tai Chi is a centuries old martial art that originated in China, the purpose of which is to achieve stillness in movement. It’s described as a slow motion, meditative exercise for relaxation, health and self-defence (if needed) and its graceful movements make it an activity suitable for people of all ages. The word Tai Chi translated into English means ‘great life force’ (tai means great and chi, life force or ultimate energy.) The beginnings According to history, Tai Chi was originally developed by Master Chang who once spied a snake and a crane fighting and copied the motion of their movements. He then developed a series of movements and postures known as a ‘form’. The lineage of Master Chang is a little vague but Tai Chi did end up with a man named Chen Wang-Ting who is recorded as practising the form in the early 1600s. For hundreds of years the Chen style of Tai Chi was regarded

70 FEBRUARY 2012

as a powerful art and it remained a very closely guarded family secret. During the 1800s one of the Chen family members broke the tradition and taught a man outside the family named Yang Lu-Chan. It was Yang who spread the knowledge of Tai Chi to mainland China and from there it proliferated into Europe and beyond. Yang’s grandson Yang Cheng-Fu modified and standardised the original Chen form into the Yang form, which is the most commonly practised style today. The form consists of a series of 108 steps but most people practise only 24 steps known as the ‘short form’. What it is about Tai Chi is all about the balance between Yin and Yang energy, and all the movements, shapes and patterns of breathing reflect this. The ancient Chinese believed that

all living things were governed and sustained by the energy force called Chi which flows through the meridians in the body. The notion of Tai Chi is that when things are in balance and in harmony, they will be at peace which naturally leads to longevity. Yin and Yang energy are the two complete opposing energies keeping the body in balance. Yin refers to the softer, negative feminine aspects and Yang refers to the harder, positive masculine aspects. Half the organs in the body are governed by Yin and the other half by Yang. When Yin energy for example is blocked or weak, it creates an imbalance in the body resulting in illness. Tai Chi ensures that Chi energy is circulated throughout the body which removes any blockages and restores and maintains the balance in the body. In this way Tai Chi ensures that

illness is prevented and in some cases cured. How it can help you The benefits of Tai Chi are many, some of the most common include: ● Reduction in stress, anxiety and better sleep. ● Higher levels of energy and overall wellbeing. ● Improvement of balance and posture. ● Greater flexibility. ● Improved focus and concentration. ● Increased strength and improved muscle tone. ● Stronger and healthier internal organs. ● Reduction in the number of falls of older people. ● Feelings of inner peace and joy.

As stated by Cheng Man Ching (1947) Tai Chi is the great ultimate energy that strengthens the weak, raises the sick, invigorates the debilitated and encourages the timid.

Be Aware Dr. Smita Lulla throws light on ectopic pregnancy, its symptoms and risks…

T

he tem ectopic pregnancy is derived from the Greek word ‘ectopos’ meaning ‘out of place’. It occurs in one to two per cent of all pregnancies, when the fertilised egg settles and grows in any location other than the inner lining of the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy occurs in the fallopian tube in 98 per cent of women, but can occur in other organs like the ovary, cervix or abdomen.

Dr. Smita Lulla - MBBS, M.D., D.G.O (Gold Medallist) is Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologlist at Qurum Clinic, Muscat

Who is at a higher risk of having an ectopic pregnancy? Anyone who has • Had a previous ectopic pregnancy. • Had a previous surgery on the fallopian tube. • Had a previous infection of the tube - PID - pelvic inflammatory disease, specially with chlamydia. • Indulged in heavy smoking at the time of conception. • Had IVF-the risk is increased to 2-5 per cent. • Had a Progesterone containing IUCD (intra uterine contraceptive device.

growing ectopic pregnancy. On ultrasound, a mass may also be seen outside the uterus,

What are the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy? The woman would have a missed period or a scanty period. Nausea, vomiting or breast tenderness may occur. There might be abdominal pain with bleeding. If the pregnancy is not diagnosed early, the tube may rupture and the woman may have severe abdominal pain, dizziness, sweating and may even collapse. .

When is surgery required? If the HCG is above 1500 or a mass is above 3.5 cm, a laparoscopy is done. The ectopic pregnancy is then removed from the tube. If, however, the tube has ruptured and there is a large amount of blood in the abdomen, the abdomen is opened (laparotomy) and the affected tube is removed.

How will the doctor diagnose an ectopic pregnancy? A urine test or a blood test is done to confirm a pregnancy. A vaginal ultrasound is done at five to six weeks to detect the presence of a gestational sac within the uterus. If it is not visualised, a beta HCG blood test is done. If the level is more than 1500 iu /litres, a repeat scan is done 48 hours later. If the sac is still not visualised, the beta HCG is repeated. If the level has increased, it is suggestive of a

72 FEBRUARY 2012

How is an ectopic pregnancy treated? This depends on the condition of the woman, her HCG level and the ultrasound findings. If the HCG level is falling, no other treatment is required. The HCG is repeated every four days till it is below 15. If the HCG is less than 1500 iu/L and any mass is less than 3.5 cm, methotraxate injections are given which destroy the placental tissue and stop the pregnancy from growing.

What are the risks in a future pregnancy? Most women have a subsequent intra-uterine pregnancy. The risk of a subsequent ectopic pregnancy is 15-20 per cent after one ectopic and around 30 per cent after two previous ectopic pregnancies.

An increased awareness on the part of the woman and an early diagnosis and treatment by her doctor improves the woman’s future reproductive potential.

For the non-golfers, a special golfing clinic was arranged. A simple competition of chipping, pitching and putting was organised which enabled participants to not only understand the finer nuances of golf but also gave them a chance to win the biggest prize of the day – a Rolex watch.

Samsung, Capital Store, Left Bank, Patchi & Bateel, Muscat Hills, OUA, Travel Point, Silver Senses Salon and Mumtaz Mahal, City Seasons Hotel and Agility were the prize partners. the golfers-to-be took to the fairway for the chipping, pitching and putting competition. By the time the golfers and nongolfers returned from play, Michael Scholz who earlier gave golfing tips was ready with a mesmerising one-hour show delighting the audience by interspersing quick wit with his golf tricks. The morning gave way to a scintillating evening of music, entertainment and of course the gala awards. Starting with a brilliant dance performance by LED Dancers that launched the Infiniti FX model, the excitement and anticipation of the awards was taken to a crescendo by Daniela Maxova, renowned international illusionist who charmed the audience with her tricks against a background of hypnotic music and dance interludes. Ross Cormack, CEO, Nawras, gave an interesting presentation to showcase the company’s many Nawras firsts to the business sector and their latest pleasingly different product for the business community – Nawras Business Mousbak. This service gives business customers the ability to communicate with free calls between all employees while benefiting from a convenient recharging and credit distribution facility through a secured online system and controlling cost on their mobile spend. The grand surprise of the evening was the unveiling of the new OER

logo to coincide with the 15th anniversary this year of the Oman Economic Review. The audience was wowed by the prospect of the Sultanate’s premiere business magazine taking on a new identity, ethos and personality in tune with the changing times. It was non-stop fun and networking from morning to evening as OER CEO Golf, presented by Nawras, provided the perfect setting for mixing business with pleasure.
