JANUARY 2012
This Year, bring a surge of positivity into your lives. Start by being happy… and feel the change in you and everything around you. Here are 12 ways to kickstart the New Year and a happier, new you!
happy
What is happiness? Is it just a state of mind or something that elevates you to a higher plane? Is it a sense of achievement or commitment towards your goals? Is it what you strive for or what determines your very being? Whatever it is, happiness is what makes life joyous and worth living. And there’s no specific time frame to be happy or specific things that bring you happiness. The best time to be happy is in the present and it’s up to you to understand what brings you to that state. We present some simple, straightforward ways you could practise that could put you on the happiness path. And the time to begin is now!
LEARN TO FORGIVE
This is one of the most important things you need to do if you want that lightness in your heart. Forgive and then forget all the hurt that makes you a different person than the one you want to be. Forgiveness is not about pardoning someone, it’s a radical shift in your thinking and something you should do for yourself. When you learn to forgive, you look at life differently. Forgiving also means forgiving yourself and letting go. It also means understanding that you are human and so are others. It’s also the first step towards seeing relationships in a new light. “To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.” – Robert Muller
CARPE DIEM
Yes, seize the day. We have but one life to live and take all the chances we have. Look forward to each day and savour each moment. Find happiness in every little thing you do, even if you find it monotonous and mundane. Look forward to quality time with your family and friends. Look out to nature and enjoy the nip in the air or the chirping of birds. At the end of the day, try to recollect those moments that brought you immense happiness and focus on them. Life’s good, as
the famous advertisement goes.
of happiness are made of these!
“Today is life - the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today.” – Dale Carnegie
“Love is not what the mind thinks, but what the heart feels.” – Greg Evans
BE HEALTHY
PRESENT PERFECT
Health is one of the top priorities towards leading a happy life. Take care of your body. Do not ignore the little warning signs and see a doctor whenever needed. Follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Psychological research suggests that exercise is just as effective at lifting depression as antidepressants. When we exercise, we feel good and therefore, feel happy. Follow a routine and stick to it regularly. Being physically healthy makes you mentally alert as well! “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” Mahatma Gandhi
IT’S ALL ABOUT LOVE
Love does make the world go round! We love our family and friends but how often have we expressed our love towards them? Don’t hesitate to tell others what you feel about them, especially when it comes to love. A hug is like a boomerang, it always comes back to you. Hug your children so that they feel your love. Plan a surprise for your loved ones whenever you can. Moments
FIND SOME ‘ME-TIME’ In the hustle-bustle of everyday life, we often find very little time for ourselves. We are so caught up in our own worlds and the worlds of others that we forget to reach out to ourselves and look within. Do take time off every week or twice in a week to do the things you like, all by yourself. It may be a walk on the beach, a massage at a spa, catching up on a favourite movie or sitcom or simply listening to music. Happiness also means time you spend connecting with yourself. “The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself.” – Steve Maraboli
The past is gone and there’s no point in brooding over it. Live in the present and live it fully, completely and wholly. Don’t let thoughts of the past ruin what you enjoy doing today. Take each moment as it comes and revel in it. Also, you have no control over what the future may bring so don’t worry endlessly over it. The present is where you need to find happiness, so live for today! “The living moment is everything.” – D.H. Lawrence
BE THANKFUL
Gratitude does not mean merely saying ‘thank you’. Feel grateful for all things in life and this will make you happier, energetic and more hopeful and also less materialistic. It’s not easy to show gratitude but you can definitely try. Think of those things you cannot do without and be grateful for them. Think of those people without whom your lives would have no meaning and make it a point to tell them how thankful you are for their help. A little gratitude definitely goes a long way towards bringing a sense of happiness into your lives. “Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.” – Brian Tracy
BE SPIRITUAL
Just as you need to take care of your body, you need to take care of your soul as well. Spirituality helps you face life’s troubles and challenges better. It also helps you seek that genuine purpose and meaning and brings in a sense of self-discovery. Being spiritual also brings faith… an essential part of living. “When you discover something that nourishes your soul and brings
without hope and confidence.” – Helen Keller.
powers you cannot be successful or happy.” - Norman Vincent Peale
BE WHO YOU ARE
BE ORGANISED
“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own
“A large part of getting organised is learning to act from a place of selfesteem: knowing what we want and don’t want to do, knowing what we can and can’t do, and taking good care of ourselves.” - Marilyn Paul
We all come to this earth with our unique identities and develop our own traits and characteristics. While keeping up with Joneses has become a norm in today’s world, it’s also a major cause for unhappiness. Repeat to yourself. “I am me. I am good,” and no one can take that feeling of selfworth away from you. You are what you think you are and not what others think of you or want you to be.
SPREAD THE CHEER When you are happy, you pass on that positive vibe to the people around you. Smile and laugh instead of frowning or sulking. When you are buoyant and in high spirits, the world suddenly seems a better place to live in. Happiness is indeed infectious. What goes around, comes around, including happiness! “Happiness is made to be shared.” - Anonymous
joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” - Jean Shinoda Bolen
BE OPTIMISTIC
When you learn to be optimistic, happiness cannot be far away. Try to identify your pessimistic thoughts and replace them with opposite alternatives. Rehearse these optimistic thoughts regularly. When you feel compelled to make a sarcastic retort, count to ten and think of the things that would make you feel better. Think of that hug from your child when you reach home. The more you rehearse these kinds of thoughts, the more natural they will become. “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done
If you are a person who constantly likes to live in clutter, you can never be a happy person. Clutter makes a person confused, irritable and anxious. Take time out for cleaning up your home and surroundings. Being neat, tidy and organised can make you happy too!

SLICE OF LIFE -PARENTING
It’s all about values!
“You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around – and why his parents will always wave back.” – William D. Tammeus
There are no set rules to parenting. You learn and evolve as parents as your kids grow up. Of course, it brings you infinite joy but it’s a roller-coaster ride as well. With parenting comes huge responsibility and often, how your kids turn out is a bearing on how they’ve been brought up. And here’s where values come into play. Values like respect, tolerance, understanding, faith and spirituality that will make them well-rounded and grounded! These include cultural values as well.
28 JANUARY 2012
In the complex world we live in, parenting is all about ‘growing’ with your children, adopting a friendly approach and being open-minded. The Woman spoke to three couples on the importance of family values in new-age parenting and how their cultural backgrounds, traditions and inherited values are playing a role in the way their children are growing up.
ophiya Borlee is Indian and Yannick Borlee is Belgian. She works as marketing manager in a leading private company and he manages the first paintball field in Oman. Their kids Leo (13) and Faith (10 months) get the best of both worlds. And the couple’s approach to parenting is a perfect blend of the East and the West. “I was brought up in a conservative family and grew up with many restrictions. Sometimes, I wish my parents had been more of friends with me and that would have equipped me better to face the outside world,” says Sophiya.
S
The best of both worlds
Yannick however comes from a cultural background that’s diametrically opposite to Sophiya’s. “My parents were very open-minded. I became independent at a very early age,” he says.
The charm of this family lies in how well they have taken the best out of each other’s cultures and passed it onto their children. Sophiya brings in the Indian approach; values that will hold Leo and Faith in good stead as they grow up. “Family values are most important, especially the need for understanding, caring and sharing and so is religion. From Yannick, we bring the ‘openness’ into parenting. With Leo, we’ve always given him the feeling that he can come and talk to us about anything,” she adds. Sophiya believes that we live in an age where children are exposed to a lot of things and it’s very easy to be misled. “We’ve always encouraged Leo to come to us about anything he needs explanation for. He can talk to us like a friend. It’s when you say no or try to restrict your children from doing something, they rebel. He actually thinks we’re a bit too cool,” she says with a laugh. Leo goes to the American British Academy and is further exposed to multi-cultural influences. “He has Swedish, Thai, Japanese and Chinese friends and this helps him to get acquainted to their way of living but Leo doesn’t get easily influenced by what’s happening around him,” says Yannick. As parents, do they believe in being pushy? “By pushing children, you give them the wrong impression. Grades and performance is important but putting in that effort scores over everything else. We are teaching him to be independent and self-sufficient and keep the family values,” says Sophiya. Parenting is all about values. Sophiya sums it up rightly: “Cultural values are important because life today is complex and misleading for kids. I believe that having strong values will help you with every aspect in life; the way you work, treat people and live life.”
Breathe and let go or Mohammed Dohadwala, assistant general manager at Bank Sohar and Sameena Nagarwala who works in the public sector, parenting is all about playing it by the ear. “Every decade is different and we are bringing up our children differently than how we were brought up,” says Sameena.
encouragement to go ahead in life. We also encourage them to ask questions on religion for which sometimes I have no answers but I do try to handle it at their level,” says Mohammed.
F
The couple have two kids, Mustafa (11) and Sadiq (9), who study at the Indian School, Al Ghubra. “When it comes to parenting, I can only think of one thing. Breathe and let go. Sometimes kids don’t tend to listen. The frustration kept building up and we were working ourselves into a frenzy. And it’s then we started yoga and then we suddenly realised it’s easy. Most of the things you think are problems are because you are making them up. So breathe easy, take 10 seconds off when you feel worked up and things will fall into place,” says Mohammed. Sameena says that being in a place like Muscat means that you get more time to spend with family.
30 JANUARY 2012
Well-rounded is the key when it comes to this couple’s expectations from their parenting approach. “Grades matter but also how much effort they put in. We also tell them that efforts do not always equal to success and success depends on a lot of other factors as well. But the effort has to come from them,” he avers. “Both of us work reasonable hours and so we spend quality time with our children. As far as I am concerned, my job keeps me motivated, creative and inspired and that reflects in our parenting as you remain interested and focused,” she says. We bring in the role of values into parenting and Mohammed believes that hard work, compassion and empathy is a very important part of the
growing up process. “Here, the kids unfortunately see only the ‘haves’ and not the ‘havenots’ and so we need to make a special effort to ensure that they view that part of life and learn to be grateful. We do that through conversations and books,” says Sameena. “We are also spiritually inclined and teach them that it’s necessary to have faith and trust. It gives them the inspiration and
Sameena feels that if kids want independence, they should begin with taking responsibility and live upto the trust their parents place in them. “Indian parents tend to be more involved with their children and shelter them to a large extent,” she says.
n Oman, where values are an inherent part of the family system, we ask a young Omani family on how they view the whole parenting process. Tariq Hilal Al Barwani is founder and president of Knowledgeoman.com and his wife Nash’at Al Riyami is Product Manager–Marketing at Nawras. They have two children, Hilal (5) and Daniya (3).
I
Catch them young is the catchphrase when it comes to instilling the right values in your children. And the couple is doing just that. “The way our parents raised us is very different from the way we are raising our children. If we try to follow their approach, it becomes challenging as our kids are exposed more to the outside world than we were at their age. At home, it’s all about our own culture, language and the importance of religion,” says Nash’at. “I believe that when you start treating your kids as friends, it becomes easier for you as a parent. My father is my closest friend and that’s exactly how I am with both Hilal and Daniya. When you are a friend, you understand them better and don’t feel the need to be pushy. The moment you start becoming pushy and keep a gap in the relationship with your kids, you are asking them to go and get their affection outside,” says Tariq.
Be a good friend
Nash’at is of the opinion that rather than being pushy, one should try to discover the talents kids have. “I expose Hilal to a lot of things and will do the same with Daniya. This will make me discover what they are passionate about and then I’d encourage them in that direction. Hilal loves academics and learning new things and so I put him in nursery school quite early,” she says. With regard to cultural values, the couple are of the firm understanding that they need to learn, speak and understand Arabic as it’s their mother tongue. “Religion is also important and though Hilal is young, I do encourage him to go for Friday prayers with his father and after they come back, we talk about it. Even if both of us lead busy lives, working and studying, we make sure that we frequently visit other members of the family so that the kids know who their relatives are. Both of them go to their grandparents’ place on weekends and thoroughly enjoy the pampering there,” she says. Will Daniya be treated in the same way as Hilal when she grows up or will there be a different set of parenting rules for her? Nash’at disagrees. “I would treat them equally. Ultimately it all comes down to the trust we place in our children. As Tariq rightly said, being a friend to your children makes all the difference.”

DESKTOP IMPRESSIONS Four women tell The Woman what’s on their office desk… it’s an insight into their interesting personalities as well…
“IF A CLUTTERED DESK IS A SIGN OF A CLUTTERED MIND, OF WHAT, THEN, IS AN EMPTY DESK A SIGN?” – ALBERT EINSTEIN
T
his is indeed an amusing quote. But jokes apart, we do spend an inordinate amount of our waking hours in office, at our desks. And that’s perhaps why, what’s on our desks tell others a lot about us. It reveals little facets that make up our personalities and it’s our own private space, a world of our own where we think, act and get work done. It reflects our creativity, imagination and at times, our resourcefulness. What’s on your office desk, we asked an enterprising group of women across different careers… And we got some interesting descriptions. Read on to find out more…
In the pink “Well what can I say about my office? It’s my other home! I spend seven to eight hours here daily and I want to make it a fun place to work in with some objects that remind me of home. To start with, I have segregated my office items into two categories - work supplies and the fun part which helps me enjoy what I do.
32 JANUARY 2012
My work supplies contain a Nawras branded calendar that helps me track my work tasks and you would also find a daily diary along with an organiser that is always handy for my meetings and works magic in terms of reminding me about my daily schedlue. A set of different coloured pens allow me to colour my work in different shades and a cardboard holder helps me in organising check lists for events. Piles of files work as my archive library holding important papers that need to be documented. Not to forget, the business card book that I keep to contact business partners around the globe. Finally the different stationery supplies that I keep nearby always. Then comes my favourite part that makes work so much fun! A pink mug that gives me fresh coffee or tea every morning so that I stay alert and a pink water bottle to supply me with water when I am stuck for long hours at the office. I also keep a pink mirror next to me just to make sure I don’t get messy or get something stuck in my teeth! I also keep different souvenirs from places I have visited to remind me of how great those memories are. I have a Victoria’s Secret hand and nails moisturiser and a set of nail polish kept handy in case any scratches appear on my nails. I also have a close relationship with my sanitiser to keep my hands clean all the time. I must not forget to mention that I have a some certificates presented to me by Nawras pinned onto my office partition and I also keep the first 30 Seconds To Mars concert tickets in Oman near my certificates as well as the first album cover I bought of Nickelback. The Big Apple NYC magnet has also covered part of my office partition to remind me of how anxious I am to visit New York. I also have two small stuffed dolls that were given to me by my husband as gifts when I first moved to my office and these also work as paper holders.” Khadija Al Kindi All things near are dear I have quite a lot of things on my desk
and these include: • A PC and a Macbook. • A note book and a set of pencils as I prefer them over pens anytime. • Copies of the latest issue of Passage to Higher Education. • Copies of diplomas/grade lists of scholarship students very anxious to go and study abroad soon. • A pile of business cards of people I met during an official trip abroad and here in Oman that I still need to sort out and my own business card. • Many USB sticks and CDs with pictures of universities and students. • A phone (old one though) and a printer. • A mini version of the Holy Quran which I got from a woman colleague who only speaks Arabic and who
always calls me ‘Haboeba’. • A shell (from the Omani beach) that I got as a gift from the head of my department when I started to work here. • A box that normally contains typical Dutch Caramel Wafers because I like the ‘Delfts Blauw’ print. • A bell from Berlin and a mini wooden shoe from Holland (all gifts from people in Oman). • A lipstick and a small mirror which I recently got from one of my favourite Omani colleagues (Amal) because when you are called into a meeting or when students and parents decide to drop by one must look decent. • A box of Smint mints. • A small perfume bottle, again
a gift from my favourite Omani colleague Amal. • A tissue box, two Starbucks mugs one bought in Istanbul the other one in Muscat – from which I drink Omani coffee that I get from my colleagues . • Piles of other papers and files and of course, a pair of scissors, clips, gums, stapler and the keys to my car.” Bregje Van Baaren Simple yet functional “I am a very organised person. I do not like any clutter at all. I feel that a clean desk reflects the meticulous person I am. So at all times, I like to keep it neat. All I have on my desk is my laptop, a pen and some white paper to jot down notes.” Abeer Al Mukhaini
SLICE OF LIFE - WELL-BEING
Letting Go The process of letting go, after, all, is only an imitation of the actual, innate nature of the mind that all human beings were born with, says Dr. Prema Seshadri Dr. Prema Seshadri is a psychologist, wrter and entrepreneur
Almost a decade ago, I was told by a well wisher to let go off all things that bothered me. It was a long discourse, generously punctuated by “let go”. It went on and on and I have forgotten how many times one single question raged through my head that I never even voiced: “How?” How do I let go? ‘Let Go’ is by far the two most frustrating words of advice! The essence in itself is of great value and the advice per se is the right one to give. But strangely, it can prove to be the most debilitating of words. It has the power to make a person who feels weighed down by situation/s to feel impotent and insecure. And the reasons are actually two: firstly, it remains an intellectual concept and is of no great benefit if not taken to the next level; secondly, the human mind is way too complex and intangible to be advised from the level of the mind! In this article, we will explore ways to find an answer to the ‘how’. A good look at the human mind will reveal a humungous treasury of impressions that is housed within it. They are impressions collected through the active play of the five senses over a lifetime. While every impression is stored, more often than not, it’s the impressions that are tied to a negative experience that tend to surface every time life throws up a small trigger. This puts the mind into a vascilating mode, swinging back and forth between the disappointments and defeats of the past and the uncertainties and anxieties of the future. The mind, unable to keep itself focused on the present, tumbles into a state of stress and tension. And a mind consumed thus cannot lend itself to either an insight into its own capabilities and potential or have the foresight to work towards a solution. To advise a troubled mind to let go of its troubles is a futile effort. The mind needs to be readied to accept wisdom. It needs to be cleansed and detoxed so to speak. There are numerous paths to explore to find the way to cleanse the mind. Prayers are definitely an integral part of the cleansing process. To add to its strength are the age-old breathing techniques and meditation, which come under the extensive umbrella of yoga. The practice of yoga has been known to bring the mind to a state of equanimity, enhance focus and bring about a deeper insight and
perspective to life, the consequence of which is the ability to let go. Letting go has to be an effortless process. It is inconceivable that the use of effort can get rid of the stress from the mind. Letting go, in fact, is a process that happens almost inadvertently and subtly. The process of letting go, after, all, is only an imitation of the actual, innate nature of the mind that all human beings were born with. The human psyche inherently looks for comfort and pleasure and will do anything to acquire that state. But if its unable to do it the right way, the benefits will only be temporary and the necessity for denial and justifications will begin to surface. Every human being truly believes he has explored every possible avenue to come out of the rut and that in itself prevents him from letting go. Letting go is perceived as losing control, be it letting go of grief or a situation. Either way, it’s a loss of something that makes one feel powerless resulting in stress and anxiety. When one is able to see the situation for the way it actually is, from the largest perspective possible, one would realise that both control and loss of control are just some ephemeral and transient happenings, which lose their significance over a period of time. When this realisation dawns, the fear of losing control will also fade because after all, we really don’t have any control over life! Letting go of this perceived control would help one truly relax. To achieve a successful letting go also requires the knocking down of limited and overblown identifications. Drop the boundaries, experience freedom and live life to its fullest.
THE MIND NEEDS TO BE READIED TO ACCEPT WISDOM. IT NEEDS TO BE CLEANSED AND DETOXED

THE SPIRIT OF BEAUTY All about Shankara, the new organic, natural spa line that’s made its debut in Oman…
It’s the beauty secret of top Hollywood celebrities. And they call it ‘consciousness in a bottle’. Shankara, the new distinctive skin care line that fuses western science with traditional eastern Ayurveda is now available in Oman. The international organic, natural spa line also supports humanitarian and women’s empowerment causes. It will be encouraging women in Oman to take up the promotion and selling of these herbal products on an entrepreneurial basis. The Woman spoke to Ashish K. Pandya, Director – Sales & Marketing, Shankara Inc on what

makes Shankara different…
unique
and
What’s the philosophy on which Shankara’s based? Shankara is a unique skin care system providing exclusive product creations of Ayurvedic wisdom and advanced science. Integrity of process, purity and vitality of ingredients, and cutting edge formulae are the hallmarks of Shankara. It was created to be more than a skincare line. ‘Shankara’ in Sanskrit means ‘pure beauty with fully blossomed consciousness’ reflected in its logo ‘Lotus-Rose’. The logo is a reflection of the EastWest product concept, wherein the
rose is a concept of pure beauty and love in the West, while the lotus is a sacred symbol of wisdom and light in the East. Thus, Shankara products are all about bringing about inner peace and doing plenty of good. So, the philosophy of Shankara could be summed up as that which aims at achieving inner beauty, outer beauty and lasting beauty. The term ‘herbal products’ has become a sort of a cliche... What make herbal products really herbal? Shankara employs a unique process of production. It does not utilise the process of over-heating and
boiling the raw ingredients since excessive heat takes away the innate intelligence of the enzyme activity and vibrancy. On the other hand, Shankara employs the technique of cold processing that preserves the vitality and nutrients in the products’ raw ingredients. All Shankara products are cold processed! Herbalised oils are heated up slowly at temperatures that do not exceed 110 degrees to maximise and preserve enzymatic activity (enzymatic activity starts to break down at 120 degrees Fahrenheit). It takes a week to prepare each herbalbased oil in this manner. What is your concept of inner
beauty and outer beauty? How does Shankara seek to achieve this? The East-West resonance and Aromatherapy makes Shankara unique. For centuries, the East has founded each one of its creations on the philosophy of bodymind alignment. All five senses constantly create impressions in our consciousness, which either create harmony or disharmony. Shankara too is based on the principle of creating this harmony through the inhalation of finely tuned aromatherapy, and the assimilation of naturally energised nutrients applied to the skin topically. The exclusive aromatherapeutic products join the innate intelligent life-source of organic herbs and oils in Ayurvedic tradition with scientifically proven skin-balancing and regenerating ingredients from the West, in a proprietary, cold process. Complex organic essential oil blends individualised for each product create unique aromatherapeutic qualities to produce an experience of ultimate, visible skin transformation. Name three Shankara products that women feel have changed the way they look at beauty products? The three products of Shankara that people have raved about are: • The Microcrystal Exfoliate is the first natural exfoliant available
for home and professional use. Tiny microcrystals derived from diatomaceous earth found in an ancient lakebed gently and thoroughly remove dry, dead skin cells. New skin is soothed with sea algae and aloe vera. Hollywood celebrities like Gloria Loring and Goldie Hawn have been satisfied users of Shankara. • ATP Cell Serum that sparks a dramatic age-reversal process by jumpstarting metabolism at the cellular level. It is the initiating agent of every cell function. • The Ultra Eye Cream to reduce puffiness, remove under-eye dark circles, and remove fine ageing lines from around the eyes, since the skin around the eyes doesn’t have any muscles, eye creams have to be made with very sensitive, mild and non-irritating ingredients. Shankara offers a vey gentle and sensitive moisturiser for around the eyes. Ayurveda is not just about physical wellness but complete wellbeing as well? How does Shankara bring total wellbeing into the picture? Shankara products offer skin care, body care as well as aromatherapy. It employs different combinations of ancient, eastern modalities and modern, western techniques to bring about a sense of complete well being in just one treatment whether at home or at the Spa.
What is your personal concept of beauty and well-being? Having decided to adopt a life, which could be, lived with fullness and make life a celebration, it was easy to bond with the very philosophy of Shankara – inner beauty, outer beauty and lasting beauty! And, of course, the only way to make beauty last is to share the secrets of Shankara!
Shankara Products are available at Sri Sri Ayurveda and would soon be available at all leading retail outlets in Oman.

BUZZ - SUPERSTAR
50 JANUARY 2012
From fresh faced, wide eyed teen star to smokin’ hot siren in this year’s most anticipated movie, Anne Hathaway is all grown up!
MEOW! MEOW! ell, well, well… Who doesn’t remember Anne Hathaway as the bushy browed, awkward princess from 2001’s The Princess Diaries. We were disarmed by the wide-eyed, pale beauty in Disney’s runaway hit and even then, we knew. This, this was a star. Hathaway projected an old school charm, a curious mixture of innocence and wisdom that belied her then seventeen years. She’s come a long way since then, but she retains that subtle charm, that unmistakable aura of natural talent that made us all fall in love with her way back then. Today the young star is all grown up and set to star as Catwoman - or Selina Kyle if you will - in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. It’s hard to imagine Hathaway with claws, but we’re told they will come out – and how! But who was Hathaway pre-claws, pre-Catwoman? The role, though certainly an important one in her career, will by no means define her. Hathaway after all, has acting in her blood; her mother was an actress and an important role model for Hathaway. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1982, her family moved to New Jersey when she was six years old and little Anne attended school there. In high school she won many awards for acting, even managing to nab a Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award Nomination for Best Performance by a High School Actress. Her first big break came though with The Princess Diaries in 2001. Hathaway auditioned for the role of klutzy princess Mia Thermopolis during a flight layover on her way to New Zealand and instantly won the part. Rumour has it that she fell off her chair during the audition and the rest, as they say is history. The star, never one to sit around and gloat, treated her new found fame with caution, “I was 17 years old when I was cast in The Princess Diaries. That film landed, and
it landed big. And so I became identified with a role that wasn’t really me.” She quickly found herself going down the route of children’s role model. Movies that followed the 2001 Disney hit included family friendly Ella Enchanted and a sequel to the Princess Diaries movie. Hathaway had a squeaky clean image but was a little wary of being termed a role model, “... it’s not something that I have ever aspired to be or courted because I think the second that you say, “Oh, I am a role model and that’s why I make the decisions that I make,” you’ve kind of shot yourself in the foot. A role model is somebody that does things because of what they believe in regardless of what other people think.” Free spirited and restless, Hathaway accepted much more mature roles in 2005 with Havoc and Brokeback Mountain. Having successfully broken free of her child friendly mould, Hathaway flourished as an actress. Her role in Brokeback Mountain as Heath Ledger’s wife made her more aware of the sorts of roles she wanted to be taking on. She gushed
“I LOOK MY BEST AFTER AN ENTIRE HAIR AND MAKEUP TEAM HAS SPENT HOURS PERFECTING ME. WHEN DO I FEEL MY BEST? WHEN I HAVEN’T LOOKED IN A MIRROR FOR DAYS, AND I’M DOING THINGS THAT MAKE ME HAPPY.”
about the film, “I’m more proud of that film than anything I have created.” Her career took off to rave reviews. Soon, she was appearing in movies alongside star studded casts and holding her own. Notable movies include The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Becoming Jane (2007), Get Smart (2008), Rachel Getting Married (2008) where she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and Bride Wars (2009). With such a long list of impressive movies underneath her belt (and the list isn’t exhaustive!) how then, does this pretty lady get time for anything else? Says Hathaway, “I love working and I feel satisfied when I know I have literally given all the energy that I have. That being said, work is not my No. 1 priority. I don’t think it can come at the expense of your family, your friends and your ‘significant other’ if you have one.” Sounds like she knows how to work and play! Though her latest role as Catwoman and/or Selina Kyle may be more play than work. Recently released photos of Hathaway clad in a feline black cat suit had fans of the Batman series Twittering and Facebooking away. Many felt that she looked too ordinary but Hathaway swiftly and with characteristic humour reassured them, “What I am happy to say is, if you didn’t like the photo, you only see about a tenth of what that suit can do,” she promised. “And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste.” We certainly did like the photo. Not much else has been said about the movie, but co-star Christian Bale (otherwise known as Batman!) is convinced that Hathaway was the best choice for the role of Catwoman, “I had plenty of scenes with Anne and I was there when we did the screen test for her,” said her co-star. “The thing that I said to Chris [Nolan] that day was that there were many very accomplished actresses who had read for the role. I’m terrible at auditions, so I’m very impressed when somebody really seems to acquire an ownership of a character without having worked on it or prepared for
some amount of time.” Hathaway has some big paws to fill though. The Catwoman role has been taken on by both Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer. How then, will she manage? Well, she’s proven she’s got talent and the claws are certainly coming out this time around. We’re expecting edgy and are sure Hathaway will be convincing as the comic book feline. But we’re glad to know that at heart, she remains the same old rosy cheeked sweetheart she’s always been, “I’ve worked with people and I’ve known people that were really competitive
but I’ve always said that I take an Elizabeth Bennett philosophy of life - I laugh. I love my job but if it means hurting someone I won’t do it.” She’s Catwoman and she bases her life philosophies on fictional Jane Austen characters? Life’s certainly on a roll personally for the star as well. She and fiancé Adam Shulman, an actor and jewellery designer recently announced their engagement and rumours are that marriage is on the cards, soon! Sigh, perfect? That’s as close as it gets readers!
BUZZ - STARDUST
Love stories After a celebrated wedding and a more celebrated break-up, Kim Kardashian is cooling it on the dating front for a while. But the star definitely wants to put 2011 beyond her and is upbeat about the coming year. “I’m really thinking 2011 was about a lot of learning lessons,” Kim says of the past 12 months, which saw her get engaged, married and split from Kris Humphries. “In 2012, I’m just excited for the New Year and the new me.” The star has not ruled out getting married a third time saying that she believes in love… always! Are we ready to see an all-new Kim? Or as they say, will the cat change its spots?
Gossip galore There’s no end to rumours… atleast in tinseldom. Egyptian actress Muna Zaki expressed her outrage at the recent rumour circulating on the Internet that she and her husband, actor Ahmad Hilmi had died in a horrific car accident. The rumour began on social networking sites and the pair was inundated with frantic calls from all over the world. Muna was clearly upset and rightly so… and so are we!
Happy comeback Egyptian actress Nelly Kareem is angry, and very angry! She has vociferously denied rumours that she’s playing a provocative role in a new movie. Nelly has stressed that she has always drawn the line regarding the roles she would agree to play. And intimate scenes are a definite no-no! She also said that she was a mother and would never play a role that would harm the future of her children. If you didn’t know already, Nelly is all set to return to her acting career after taking time off for the birth of her fourth child. Here’s wishing her a happy comeback!
HEARD ON THE GRAPEVINE... Baby Central Ah! What’s that they say? Anything for love? Jay-Z is playing his part to the hilt by supporting Beyoncé’s pregnancy in every which way and that includes dieting with her. The duo, as newspaper reports claim are maintaining a ‘partially vegan diet’. Jay’s trying his best to be disciplined especially since Beyoncé is really conscious about what she eats. And pregnancy hasn’t slowed her down one bit. Now that’s a really sweet way to proclaim togetherness and say hello to baby.
54 JANUARY 2012
Princess Diaries Britney’s engaged! Now, should we go all clap-clap! Or wait a while to see where the pair is going? Well, let’s get optimistic on this one… as beau Jason Trawick recently called his Britney an ‘everyday princess’ and gave her a tiara-motif sparkler with a round, perfect white diamond in handmade platinum setting. A mini-crown just for the engagement! Aww! If the jeweller would have us believe, then the couple is in it for the long haul. Said, Neil Lane who designed the engagement ring, “He’s deeply in love with her. Britney is his princess and he is her knight in shining armour!” Well, let’s hope that this fairy-tale does have a happy ending!
Name Calling After Demi Moore announced that she was divorcing Ashton Kutcher, people were more worried about whether she’d continue with her Twitter handle @mrskutcher. But Demi has showed no signs of changing her identity on Twitter. She has repeatedly tweeted after the unfortunate announcement in the same name and recently let people know in no uncertain terms that she doesn’t care about her user name. Well, the lady’s got spunk… and she says it as it is! Super Star Call her strange, bizarre, attention grabbing or simply weird, but Lady Gaga was definitely born to be a mega star. She made a staggering $90 million in 2011, making more money than any female singer by a mile. Who came a far second? Taylor Swift with just a paltry $45 million. The others like Katy Perry with $44 million, Beyoncé with $35 million and Rihanna with $29 million were way behind. Gaga’s impressive earnings were mainly due to her tour, which grossed $1.3 million a night, as well the Born This Way singer’s many endorsement deals. The earnings estimates were compiled by Forbes with help from data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as extensive interviews with industry insiders. This is what we call, laughing all the way to the bank!
Shaping up With Dhoom 3 ready to roll by March this year, we are waiting to see whether Aaamir Khan will match John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan in the ‘perfect body’ stakes. Well, the actor is definitely leaving no stone unturned in this department. Aamir, being Aamir and a perfectionist, apparently has an American trainer to get him into ‘Dhoom’ shape. The results were seen at a recent badminton game where Aaamir was seen flexing his muscles. We’re certainly looking forward to Dhoom 3, Aamir Khan, muscles, Katrina Kaif, et al.
Tweet Tweet Another star to succumb to the social media bandwagon and that too all for a commercial cause is Bollywood biggie Kareena Kapoor. The actress who until now has stayed away from Twitter and Facebook will now be on Twitter, tweeting straight from the sets of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. So just for the film, she’ll be tweeting via UTV Motion Pictures’ Twitter account. “It will be a new experience for me and I’m really looking forward to it,” she said. Well, if it’s a star, then it’s anything for a film. And Kareena is no exception.

WELLNESS ZONE
Whispers of Serenity Clinic offers you different ways to detox the mind…
ust before you enter the Whispers of Serenity Clinic tucked away in a quiet corner of Ghubra, there’s a board that welcomes you with, “You are entering a relaxation zone, so keep your stresses and concerns behind.” That’s perhaps the first step towards making you understand what the clinic’s all about. 58 JANUARY 2012
The reception area is swathed in blue and white mirroring a cascading reflection of the sea nearby. It’s calming, soothing and puts one at ease immediately. As we lounge on the comfortable sofas with some cosy throw cushions, Sayyida Basma Al Said makes her appearance. Whispers of Serenity is
her brain-child, it’s in fact Muscat’s brilliant answer to what you could call a mind spa or retreat. While she takes us on a round of the premises which is quite huge, she throws light on what Whispers of Serenity is all about. “It’s more than just a mental health wellness
“OUR AIM IS TO TAKE A HOLISTIC AND NON-MEDICATED APPROACH TO MENTAL WELLBEING. WE BELIEVE PEACE OF MIND COMES FROM MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING; THEY ARE ONE AND THE SAME.”
clinic,” she begins as we peep into what they call the ‘destress room’. There are punching bags; clearly for those wanting to seek an outlet to their anger. As we move on, Sayyida Basma explains: “Our aim is to take a holistic and non-medicated approach to mental well-being. We believe peace of mind comes from mental and physical well-being; they are one and the same.” We were in total agreement. For it’s imperative that one understands that mental wellness is very important especially in an age where stress can take a huge toll on our health. As Sayyida Basma says, “It’s a place where you can come to detox your mind, and work on your general well-being. It’s not a just a psychology clinic.” Therapy at Whispers of Serenity comes in various forms. There is a wide range of services that include Laughter Yoga, relaxation therapy yoga for relaxation, Tai Chi and Reiki to provide relief from daily stress and tension. Besides these, the clinic also offers drama and art therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, mental health counselling, antenatal and post-natal therapy and psychotherapy for people of all ages. There’s a specially decorated room for children that caught our attention as we walked along. “I have wanted to do this ever since I was a Baccalaureate student. The study of psychology is something I loved,” she says. She holds a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counselling in Australia and has trained at King’s College, UK and Harvard University. She’s also a Mental Health Counsellor at Sultan Qaboos University. As we take our conversation to her expansive room, Sayyida Basma asks us whether we’d be open to a Relaxation Therapy session. This session could range from 10 minutes upto an hour, where she combines imaginary and physical relaxation for a calming experience.
With the lights dimmed, and some soothing Japanese music, we were taken to faraway places, through the fields and to beaches as Sayyida Basma relaxed both body and mind. With the relaxation of the muscles, our tensions of the day too melted away. At the end of it, the happiness was evident on our faces. This was what relaxation was all about! Whispers of Serenity is where the mind whispers in calm, gentle tones and your body listens… bringing about total well-being – of body, mind and spirit.

HEALTH - FITNESS
In this multi-tasking world, we all live under constant and different levels of stress. This in turn translates into eating unhealthy, working long hours and leading sedentary lives. Which again mean a number of illnesses – both physical and mental that can take their toll! Most of us bemoan the fact that we have no time for physical exercise. But who are we kidding? We have 24 hours in a day… and is taking time out atleast for half-an-hour everyday asking for too much? Let’s begin with the simplest forms of fitness. While all of us may vociferously agree, ‘health is indeed wealth’, it’s time to literally walk the talk. Walking is gentle; it’s low-impact exercise and when done outdoors, can ease you slowly not just into physical health but mental well-being as well. Walking is inexpensive, safe and the simplest way to exercise.
WALK YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH Walking is a simple and wonderful way to keep fit…
68 JANUARY 2012
WALKING IS GENTLE; IT’S LOW-IMPACT EXERCISE AND WHEN DONE OUTDOORS, CAN EASE YOU SLOWLY NOT JUST INTO PHYSICAL HEALTH BUT MENTAL WELL-BEING AS WELL Why should you walk? Medically, walking offers a host of benefits. These include: O Helping lower your bad cholesterol. O Raising the good cholesterol. O Lowering blood pressure. O Reducing the risk of or managing Type 2 diabetes. O Managing weight. O Enhancing your mood. O Helping you stay strong and fit. Now, that you know why you should walk, here are some things to bear in mind before starting off on a regular walking programme. Warm up Just before walking, you can warm up by doing some stretching exercises. Increase your pace when you feel warm by just walking in place. Slow and steady Do not attempt to walk for a longer distance and time on the first day. If you’ve been inactive lately, it’s best to walk only as far as you can… if you are tired easily, then it’s time to stop and start again the next day. After a few short sessions over a few days, slowly build up to 15 minutes to half-an-hour upto thrice a week. Get a buddy Sometimes, walking alone may be
boring. Get a friend to walk along with you and be surprised at how you motivate each other easily. But don’t slow down just to catch up on gossip. Talk but walk briskly at the same time. Sometimes, being part of a walking group also works wonders. Get into the groove If you prefer walking alone, tune into your iPod or music player. Listening to your favourite music can encourage you to walk more and make it an enjoyable task. Get into the habit Make walking a part of everyday life. You do this by O Walking part of your journey to work.
O Taking
the stairs at the office instead of the lift. O Leaving the car behind for short journeys. O Going for a stroll with family after dinner. Get the right gear A good pair of walking shoes and loose-fitting clothing can get you started off on that great walk. The shoes should have proper arch support and a firm heel. Stay motivated Try and take different routes everyday while walking. Monitor your increase in fitness and how you feel while you walk. Make this the time to think about yourself, how
to be positive – ‘me-time’, to focus only on yourself. Keep your walking regular and increase your efforts slowly and at your own pace. Walking is definitely a wonderful pastime and it helps you to keep fit too. So take those initial steps… and get walking. All the best!

Q. I am 28 years old and married for the past one-and-a-half years. I have been trying to conceive for the last five months. My periods are regular but for the last few months I am getting abdominal pain and cramps one week prior to my periods. Last month also it was painful and bleeding was mostly in the form of blood clots and that too only for a day. My doctor has advised Femilon and I want to know if it’s okay to use it when I am trying to conceive. A. If you wish to conceive, you should not use Femilon. Have an ultrasound done on day five of the period to determine whether you have a fibroid or an ovarian cyst which can be the cause of the pain. Also, repeat the scan on day 12 of the cycle to determine whether you are ovulating or not. The pain could be because you have ovulated, so that is fine. You can take Panadol or Calpol for the pain. Q. I am 28 years old, married for the past two-and-a-half years. After marriage, I faced the problem of irregular periods. After a year I consulted the doctor and did a thyroid test. It was very high and I have been taking medicine for two months now and my periods are normal. I am taking M2tone and folic acid as the doctor suggested. She also put me on Letroz, Decapeptyle and Duphaston with an ovulation study. But still I have not been able to conceive. The doctor suggests laparoscopy. What should I do? A. You may have been advised a laparoscopy to check your tubes. If you do not wish to do that, you can have an HSG (hysterosalpingography) done. This is an X-Ray that does not require anaesthesia or admission in a hospital. Let me know the result, so I can advise you further. Since you are ovulating, you can try IUI, once we know that the tubes are okay after the HSG. Q. I am 25 years old. I had a thyroid problem but now it is under control. I have irregular periods. What are my chances of conceiving? A. Since you have irregular periods, you may not be ovulating regularly. have an FSH and LH test done on day two of the cycle. Also, have an ultrasound done on day 12 of the cycle to determine whether you are
ovulating or not. Let me know the results, so I can advise you further. Q. I am 29 years old and have PCOS. I’m trying to conceive for the past four years now. I am undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bombay. My period is delayed every month but this time when it did not come I went to the doctor on the thirtieth day. She did a scan and said my pregnancy was not showing but ovulation has taken place. I had a blood test taken which was again negative and from the 31st day, the doctor suggested Deviry 10mg for five days. After stopping the tablet, I have not got my period. Should I do a pregnancy test again? A. Do a blood test - beta hcg . This will confirm whether you are pregnant or not. If still negative, ask your doctor to give you something else for the period. What are your FSH and LH levels? (done on day three of the cycle ) Also, what is your husband’s semen report. I need to know all these before I can advise you. Q. I have had two miscarriages before and later visited a gynecologist who prescribed Clomid on the fourth day of my period and asked me to take Primolut N on the 13th day after my periods to conceive in the future. According to him, I needed to repeat these medicines if I didn’t conceive. I understand that Clomid increases the chances of ovulation but i want to know more about Primolut N. It’s been seven months since I have taken these medicines but have not conceived. Please tell me what course should I take now. A. Sorry to hear about your problems. I would like you to check your thyroid hormone, toxoplasmosis and anti-cardiolipin antibodies and let me know. I want you to monitor your ovulation by ultrasound on day 12 and day 20 of the cycle. Once you have ovulated, start Duphaston tablets- one tablet twice a day for 10 days. This is safer than Primolut and would help prevent a miscarriage. This has to be continued till 12 weeks of pregnancy and is safe. Let me know the results so that I can advise you further.

he company Bourjois was created in 1863 on the Main Boulevards in the theatre district, in the heart of Paris. The first creator, Joseph Albert Ponsin was an actor who created quality makeup for other actors and actresses. He quit theatre to devote himself exclusively to being the creator of theatre make-up and a perfumer. He worked from his apartment, close to the Theatre of the Renaissance.
The Art of
Make-Up All about Bourjois and what it stands for - colour, quality, joie de vivre vre and femininity… From 1864 onwards, the Ponsin Theatrical Perfumery was the exclusive supplier to imperial theatres, and the quality of its products was awarded by gold and silver medals. In 1868, Ponsin retired from business to devote his time to a career as an artist painter. He left his business to Alexandre-Napoléon Bourjois, business manager for the last one year, who carried on the entire activity under his own name. Thereby ensuring the continuity of the creation of make-up and perfumes. Monsieur Bourjois would go on to give an international outlook to the company. Stage actresses in Paris were still wearing state of the art makeup as they knew it at that time – it was greasy, thick and quite uncomfortable to wear whilst it was

heavy enough to damage the skin. Monsieur Alexandre Napoleon Bourjois just knew there would be a better way of producing make-up and he devoted his time to creating a much superior quality of theatre make-up for his muses. It was in his pursuit that he actually created the world’s first ever powder blush called Pastel Joues. The famous powder blush was a huge success amongst Monsieur Bourjois’ female friends and it did not take long for these actresses to spread the word on their new, revolutionary makeup, which made women everywhere eager to experience this new magic of Bourjois make-up. The quality of make-up was responsible for the reputation and success of Bourjois. The demand was so high, that hand manufacture was
just not sufficient. It had to give way to an industrial process. Monsieur Bourjois invested vested into a factory in Pantin in the NorthEast of Paris, employing 16 workers. In 1900 it rose to 59 and by 1938, 800 people were working in Pantin. The Java Rice loose powder would be the first Bourjois best seller, with two million boxes sold worldwide. Soon, Bourjois was targeting the ‘middle class’. Discreet and reserved women used simple make-up, the complexion had to be white, and cheeks enhanced rouge. The following were introduced: • L’Ami des Dames (Ladies’ Friend), a box which was divided into several parts containing powder and pencils for lips and eyes • Mon Parfum in 1919 gave a new
method of perf perfuming fuming oneself. • Created in 19 914, Les 1914, Fards Pastels ar re Bourjois’ are iconic products s. Beyond history, we finally see how Bourjois constituted its style, its fundamental values and its identity through its products and communication: The brand is all about colour, quality, joie de vivre and femininity - and this is true for every product in the Bourjois collection. Apart from the high powered business networking while swinging the golf club, an elegant red carpet evening has been arranged complete with world-class entertainment, socialising, fine dining, a glittering awards ceremony and loads of exciting entertainment and prize giving. The highlight of the evening’s entertainment will be Daniela Maxova, renowned international illusionist. For the golfers to be, a special programme has been arranged apart from the golf clinic. a legend
In 1988, Boucheron entered the world of perfumes and changed it forever. The fragrance was created as an unforgettably intense formula. First, the soft light of mandarin and orange blossoms reveals a delicate feminity. Next, the opulent hearts of white flowers offer their halogen sparkle followed by intensely sunny ylang ylang. Heady jasmine vapours. A mysterious touch of tuberose. As the fragrance spreads across the skin, a wave of desire wraps around the epidermis. An Oriental pulsation of vanilla. An irresistible drop of amber. And closes with a velvety base of sandalwood. Now once again in 2011, the legendary fragrance is found in its original bottle and reappears more faithful than ever to its initial boldness. Pick up a bottle at your nearest Capital Store outlet.

Problems relating to the health of those close to you could cause you some concern, but this is just a passing phase and this too shall pass. A strong creative urge could overwhelm you and cause you to produce some startling (to others) projects which will be well received.
Daring, charm and a sense of the ridiculous could combine to take you to the top of the heap. This is especially true in the romantic arena, but could also prove very helpful in career matters. There could be some frustration concerning matters and this could cause major disruptions in your household, but things should calm down and move back to normal.

In matters of the heart, the beginning of the New Year may not be the way you want it to go. Tread softly and don’t jump to conclusions, as things may not be what they seem on the surface. A friend may have strong opinions so try and be tactful.
LIBRA
A friend in need is a friend indeed, is not just a cliché. A long-standing friend will come to your rescue, especially when the going gets tough. Money matters also require a lot of attention so think before you spend.
A new project at the beginning of the year could lift your hopes or dash them, depending on how well you have done your homework. It’s also the time to pay close attention to financial and personal affairs. Avoid being secretive; openness always brings good results.
SCORPIO
Love’s in the air… and Valentine’s Day plans begin well in advance. Plan a getaway with your significant other and bring the romance back into your relationship. A friend or co-worker may come to you with a declaration and bowl you over. All the best!
While the New Year may be the beginning of good tidings, it’s also time to work towards developing a new outlook as well. Abrasiveness and outright temper tantrums can cause problems for you, so try to manage that anger. Patience is the keyword here, both at work and at home.
Things are going to be smooth at the workplace, so look out for that glowing appraisal and equally glowing promotion. Make plans for a spring vacation, keeping in mind that you need the rest too!
SAGITTARIUS
Take some time off to focus on goals that need to be achieved in the New Year. This is also the time for personal recognition and a rich feeling of accomplishment. Revel in the joys of success.
TAURUS
Planning is the key towards peace of mind this year. Avoid being argumentative and practise being flexible in your day-to-day activities. Money’s coming… so plan well and save for a rainy day.
VIRGO
Give special thought to learning more about a project that has become interesting to you before becoming more deeply committed.. Give some thought to extensive travel, perhaps to a foreign destination, as this could become a reality soon.
CAPRICORN
Be careful not to get caught in the crossfire if you meddle in the affairs of others. This is not to say that you should avoid aiding friends in need, but care should be taken that you don’t get caught in the fallout. A hobby could take your mind off your worries.
