Jokes While proudly showing of his new apartment to friends one night Ted led the way to his bedroom where pride of place was given to a large brass gong. "What's that big brass gong for?" one of the guests asked. "Why, that's the speaking clock',"Ted replied. "How does it work? "I'll show you," Ted said, giving it an ear-shattering blow with an unpadded dodger. Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screamed, "For goodness sake you idiot, it's 2 o'clock in the morning!"
Sophie went to see a psychiatrist about her husband. "Doctor, My husband has this problem. Almost every night now he's dreaming he's a refrigerator!" "My dear, that is not really a problem! A lot of people dream that they are somebody or something unusual..." Sophie leans forward as she softly whispers this confidence: "But you see doctor it is also a problem for me! Jake sleeps with his mouth open and the light keeps me awake!"

Seven months pregnant, my hand on my aching back, I stood in line at the post office for what seemed an eternity. "Honey," said a woman behind me, "I had back pain during my pregnancy. I was bedridden for four months because my baby was sitting on a nerve." Then the man in front of me piped up.... "You'd better get used to it now. Once those kids get on your nerves, they can stay there till they're 18."
An American attorney had just finished a guest lecture at a law school in Italy when an Italian lawyer approached him and asked, "Is it true that a person can fall down on a sidewalk in your county and then sue the landowners for lots of money?" Told that it was true, the lawyer turned to his partner and started speaking rapidly in Italian. When they stopped, the American attorney asked if they wanted to go to America to practice law. "No, no," one replied. "We want to go to America and fall down on sidewalks."
Little Johnny was talking to a couple of boys in the school yard. Each was bragging about how great their fathers are. The first one said: "Well, my father runs the fastest. He can fire an arrow, and start to run, I tell you, he gets there before the arrow!" The second one said: "Ha! You think that's fast! My father is a hunter. He can shoot his gun and be there before the bullet!" Little Johnny listened to the other two boys and shook his head. He then said: "Sorry, dudes... but MY DAD is the fastest. He's a civil servant. He stops working at 4:30,... and he's home by 3:45!"
One woman was bragging to her nextdoor neighbour about her son, a college student at University. "Why, our son is so brilliant, every time we get a letter from him we have to go to the dictionary." "You're lucky," the neighbour said. "Every time we get a letter from our son in college, we have to go to the bank!"

Readying your Home for Autumn By Lorna Sixsmith Evenings are drawing in and it is time to make our homes cosy for winter. Judging by many of the new trends that I saw at the Maison Objet show in September, it is all about adding texture and warmth through your accessories this season.
being used as place mats to bathroom walls being created from thin slivers of logs. Open fires are what really makes a house a home but don’t hide the logs away in a log box - have them on display. If your fire is gas or electric, why not have some ‘perfectly shaped’ logs on display?

Cushions are a great and relatively inexpensive way to ring the change in seasons in the bedroom and living room. Put away your light coloured cushions and invest in comfortable cushions with lots of texture for the winter. Think of cushions embellished with buttons, bobbles, lace, embroidered flowers, tassles, faux fur, raised velvet, piping, faux flowers …. . Hand knitted cushions are very much back in vogue too with patterns from the simple plain/purl to the Aran designs. If you don’t feel up to taking out the knitting needles yourself, there will be a wide array of knitted cushions in the shops and the softer the wool is, the better. It is all about being tactile this season. Get out those knitting needles! Indeed, such is the enthusiasm for wool in interiors this season that woollen products are not just limited to cushions and throws. Candles have an Aran pattern on the outside, clocks can even be finished with a knitting pattern, even pouffees can be purchased in a cable knit. Lampshades are now available in knitted patterns as well as embellished with knitted flowers or even coloured goose feathers! The choice is endless as are the challenges if you want to take those knitting needles out again.
Wreaths on the hall door aren’t necessarily just for Christmas. Create a autumnal wreath for Hallow’een to welcome those trick or treaters add nuts, dried oranges, small apples, berries - whatever you like to a simple bought plain wreath. Don’t forget the decorated pumpkins either and now it is possible to purchase a variety of different shaped and coloured squashes, pumpkins and gourds from the shops. Have fun with the children by carving out different faces and put the various pumpkins and squashes on display on your hall steps or inside in the hall. Above all - have fun, stay safe with matches and candles and remember that cosiness is key this winter. Lorna Sixsmith owns Garrendenny Lane Interiors, an online store that supplies home accessories and gifts at www.garrendennylane.ie with the new site being launched this month. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Garrendennyla ne.
Colour Don’t forget colour - bring in some warm autumnal shades in those cushions and other accessories. Reds, oranges, purples, browns, aubergines. Decide in advance what the dominant colours for your Christmas decorating will be so they will compliment your autumnal decorating. Sticks and Stones Natural products such as wooden logs were very apparent at the show this year - from slices of log

An exhibiton entitled "Putting it on the Line" 2010 will be on display at the Link Building, Aras an Chontae from Monday 11th October to Friday 29th October, 2010 and can be viewed by the public from 9am to 5pm for the duration of the exhibiton. Schools and Community Groups are welcomed to view the work by contacting the Arts Office, Telephone 067 8674342/41. To mark World Mental Health Day which was held on October 10th the Link Centre at St Fintan's Hospital held an Art exhibition in conjuction with Scoil Christ Ri and CBS which focused on stigma and attitudes towards mental health illness. The exhibiton Putting it on the Line was launched by Laois County Council Arts Officer, Muireann Ni Chonaill in the Link Centre, Dublin Road Portlaoise.
The idea and initiative was the brainchild of Angela Delaney, who is the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Art Therapy Interventions at the Link Centre. She involved transition year students of both schools. The students worked with the clients of the Link Centre to depict their anxiety and concerns about what it would be like to have a mental illness and the experience of others who are living with a mental illness. This partnership involved clients from the Link Centre going into the schools and students from the schools travelling to work on the art project at the Link Centre in the grounds of St Fintan's Hospital. The Round Tower of Timahoe, all that remains of the early monastery founded by St. Mochua, is unique, as it as a double Romanesque doorway with fine ornamentation, including heads with intertwined hair and a Romanesque window in the third floor. Measuring 96 feet feet hight, it is one of the widest Round Towers in the country. St. Mochua was originally a soldier but at the age of thirty, decided to become a monk. He had a reputation as a healer having cured two abbots, one of a sudden loss of memory loss and another of leprosy. St. Mochua lived as a hermit without worldly goods except he had three pets - a rooster, a mouse and a fly. The rooster kept the hours of Matins for him; the mouse never let him sleep more than three hours a day or night, and if he should sleep longer, being weary with vigils and prostrations, the mouse would start nibbling his ear until it woke him. The fly's role was to walk along each line of his Psalter as he read it, and when he was weary with saying his psalms, the fly would abide upon the line
A monument to St. Mochua, St. Mochua's Desk, lies in the grounds of Timahoe's Round Tower. The work was designed and made by sculptor Michael Burke. St. Mochua's Desk is made out of welded stainless steel, red granite and bronze. The book and the column are made of limestone. Although the round Tower probably dates from the 12th century, there are records of deaths of the monks in the old monestery between 880 and 1007 and even a reference to the church in 1069. during Medieval times, the O'Mores re-founded the monastery and after the Suppression, the monastery and lands became the property of Richard Cosby in 1609. It is thought that it was one of the Cosby family who transformed what was a medieval church into a castle, of which only the east wall remains. A community existed here as late as the year 1650, when Hewson, after dismantling Dunamase, overran the Queen's County, and among other acts of cruelty and devastation, murdered all the friars of this Abbey, and demolished their house. The place where they were massacred is still called "Boher a wurther" or "the road of murder." The Tower grounds are open daily during daylight hours.

Senior Football Final Sponsor a Sod Hard luck to the Clara team and management on losing the senior final. Clara played Rhode in the senior championship final on Sunday loosing to Rhode 3-9 Clara 2-11. McNamee's seventh-minute goal handed Rhode the early initiative, but that lead was quickly cancelled out by Thomas Deehan's punched effort at the opposite end in the 13th minute. Anton Sullivan restored Rhode's advantage with their second goal in the 17th minute, but Clara finished the half strongly with points from John O'Hara and Deehan to go into the break on level terms, 1-4 to 2-1. McNamee's second major in the 39th minute put Rhode back in the driving seat, but with John Reynolds, O'Hara and Deehan asserting themselves, Clara were back on level terms heading into the final quarter. Niall Darby accurate free-taking and McNamee, who fired over two points, Rhode had opened up a four-point advantage before O'Hara pulled back a Clara goal in injury-time. However, it was a case of too little, too late as the green and golds held on the claim the Dowling Cup for 2010. The game had an attendance of 6,500. More Jokes An optimist sees the best in the world, while a pessimist sees only the worst. An optimist finds the positive in the negative, and a pessimist can only find the negative in the positive. For example, an avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck. Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him. He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, a pessimist by nature, and invited him to hunt with him and his new dog. As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. They fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and

jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet. This continued all day long; each time a duck fell, the dog walked across the surface of the water to retrieve it. The pessimist watched carefully, saw everything, but did not say a single word. On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, "Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog?" "I sure did," responded the pessimist. "He can't swim."
A young man called his mother and announced excitedly that he had just met the woman of his dreams. Now what should he do? His mother had an idea: "Why don't you send her flowers, and on the card invite her to your apartment for a home- cooked meal?" He thought this was a great strategy, and arranged a date for a week later. His mother called the day after the big date to see how things had gone. "The evening was a disaster," he moaned. "Why, didn't she come over?" asked his mother. "Oh, she came over, but she refused to cook...."
Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother gently rubbed cold cream on her face. "Why are you rubbing cold cream on your face, Mommy?" he asked. "To make myself beautiful," said his mother. A few minutes later, she began removing the cream with a tissue. "What's the matter?" asked Little Johnny. "Giving up?"

Bereavement and grieving (continued from previous issue) Do we all grieve the same way? In my contributions on grief so far I have been looking at what is called normal grief. Now I would like to look at anticipatory grief and complicated grief. Anticipatory grief occurs when a person has advanced warning of death. Such warning can help the bereaved cope better with post-death grief, especially if he or she has shared the anticipatory grief with the person who is going to die. But anticipatory grief does not necessarily reduce the amount of grieving the survivor has to do following the death. It really prepares the defences to cope better with the full bereavement experience. It is important to realise that anticipatory grief is never complete and if post death grief is not faced then the result can be complicated grief. Complicated grief is generally dealt with in counselling, where the complicating factor is first resolved before the grieving can take place. Complicated grief is sometimes called pathological grief, unresolved grief, chronic grief, delayed grief or exaggerated grief. It has been described as too little grieving immediately after the death or too much grieving long afterwards. It is as if the grief filters become clogged, preventing normal grieving. Some bereavement writers see normal grieving as arriving from these three sources:- 1. A poor relationship with the deceased. 2. the vulnerability of the survivor, 3. very difficult circumstances surrounding the death. The crucial factors in deciding if grief is complicated are intensity and duration rather than the painful symptoms of grief. These vary from mourner to mourner. We can look at complicated grief as chronic, delayed, exaggerated and masked. Chronic grief is one of excessive duration, which is never satisfactorily resolved. The bereaved is aware of the unfinished business, but cannot get back to living. Delayed grief reaction stems from an insufficient emotional reaction at the time of loss. It is a defence mechanism in the face of awful pain. How often have we heard someone say ‘so and so is taking death really well’. Not so. In such cases the grief is carried over and results in excessive reaction to some future loss. Exaggerated grief reactions occur when the the bereaved is overwhelmed with pain. Clinical depression is one of the signs of exaggerated grief, and I suffered from this following the death of my child. Masked grief reactions are those where the bereaved is unaware that they are related to the loss. Repressed grief will however, somehow express itself. This
By Jim O’Shea can be a physical symptom, or some type of maladaptive behaviour. This behaviour may be delinquent behaviour in young people. One type of death that invariably leads to complicated grief is that of suicide. Bereavement writers hold that it evokes more intense and longer lasting grief than other losses. Suicide leaves the bereaved with a struggle to create meaning from the loss. There was a time when suicides were not buried in consecrated ground, but hopeful such a cultural legacy has now faded from the public mind. It is held by bereavement writers, too, that guilt and perhaps a sense of punishment are felt by survivors following a suicide. Some suicides occur in the context of difficult relationships, and this increases the guilt and anger. This can lead, also, to a feeling of rejection that may be accompanied by anxiety and self destructive impulses. Other factors, which add to the pain of suicide bereavement, are abuse and alcoholism. While I had complicated grief, I managed to get through it without counselling; (My wife and I had two sessions). This is not always possible, and I would encourage anyone who feels that they are stuck in grief to get some counselling. Such counselling may not take very long, but will release the survivor from being stuck, and allow them to move to experiencing their grief. I will look at the death of a child in the next article.
