Needless to say, the past year was an unprecedented one full of challenges. I want to first say how proud I am of all of our student-athletes, coaches, trainers and administrative staff that played a hand in allowing us to compete. Being able to do so required remarkable dedication and teamwork from everyone involved. Thank you! This year was a constant reminder of a motto that we live by daily at Belmont Athletics; “Everyday Excellence.” We strive each day to bring excellence to all that we do, knowing that if we focus on the process, the results will pay off in time. Each day this year, we were challenged to motto this year. We achieved “Everyday Excellence.” As we begin to transition back to more regular times, I am excited to see us get back to business here at Belmont. I know many of you were not
Below are a few helpful notes for your renewal process: • If you applied payment from last year’s tickets to this season, that will be noted on your renewal. • If you are making both your annual Bruin Club gift and season ticket payment via check, they must be separate checks. • All donations to Belmont Athletics are philanthropic in nature and are non-refundable. Our goal this year is to renew and reinvigorate your relationship with Belmont Athletics and to remind you of why you chose to be a Bruin, one unforgettable moment at a time.

To those who have felt that distance, I am asking you now to reinvest in your relationship with Belmont Athletics. I promise you if we all buy back in together, the future of Belmont Athletics is limitless.

This season promises to be one not to be missed. On the men’s side, the defending regular season OVC Champions return a veteran team, filled with talent across the board. The program has its sights set on capturing another conference championship en route to returning to the NCAA Tournament. Multiple preseason top-25 polls, including ESPN, have already listed the Bruins in their rankings. Our women’s basketball team will enter the year fresh off the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, defeating Gonzaga in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. A slew of young, determined talent will look to lead the Bruins to even further heights.

INTRODUCING DR. JONES
On Feb. 1, 2021, Belmont University named Dr. L. Gregory Jones, longtime dean of Duke Divinity School, as its next president, effective June 1. Dr. Jones is married to the Rev. Dr. Susan Pendleton Jones, Belmont’s new First Lady, who has served as a campus minister, a local church pastor and as a senior administrator at Duke Divinity School.

I am writing this the day after the Belmont women’s basketball team upset Gonzaga in the NCAA tournament, and I am struck by how many people with no direct ties to Belmont have contacted me to celebrate that victory. Belmont has a remarkable trajectory across its athletic programs, and men’s and women’s basketball lead in their visibility and success. If we look at the impressive trajectory that Gonzaga has had over the past two decades in men’s basketball, culminating in this year’s NCAA men’s tournament where it is the tournament favorite and has been ranked #1 all season, Belmont has similar potential for success and visibility in the future. I look forward to working with AD Scott Corley, the coaches, the student-athletes and the entire athletics program to strengthen this vital component of Belmont’s mission.
WHAT DO YOU SE E AS SOME OF TH E LARGE R I SS UE S CO LLEGE AT H LE T I CS WILL FACE IN THE NEXT FIVE-TEN YE ARS? These are turbulent times in
higher education and college athletics especially. I would highlight the changing role of media in covering sports as well as providing funding for them, questions about paying student-athletes (including especially for the use of their likenesses), and gender equity across athletic programs as among the most important issues facing college athletics. We will deal with all of these issues in ways that are shaped by Belmont’s larger mission and vision: with character and integrity and excellence in aspiration as well as execution.

facility on Belmont’s campus. The facility marks the first athletics exclusive facility constructed on Belmont’s campus in nearly 20 years. Student-athletes have quickly made the facility a second home. New practice courts, expanded strength and conditioning space, locker rooms, team rooms, office space, meeting spaces and a video review room have provided Belmont’s student-athlete with a level of resources not previously experience by Belmont Athletics. Belmont Athletics would like to thank the numerous donors and families who have helped to support the project to this point. Additionally areas of support needed and associated naming opportunities available may be found in the coming pages.
EXCELLENCE
“As with all things at Belmont, the Crockett Center for Athletic Excellence is a first-class facility that will allow our studentathletes all the amenities needed to be successful in their respective sports. It is truly amazing to see the progress made in athletic facilities since my playing days in the late ‘80s. From Striplin Gym to the Curb Center and now with the addition of the Crockett Center, we have seen transformational growth and opportunities for these programs. This growth is a testament to all the current and former players that have made Belmont Athletics something all Bruin alumni can be proud of.”

and improve facilities all over campus, the opening of our new practice facility is already paying dividends. Our student-athletes are truly the model for success, and this facility is a way of giving back to them in a way that greatly enhances the quality of their Belmont experience. It’s a clear reflection of how important they are to us and also shows Belmont’s continued commitment to athletics as a whole. The size, space, amenities and overall scope of the facility will also allow us to walk through new recruiting doors, which in turn allows us to keep moving the program forward. Every detail was well thought out and provides a space for our athletes to hone their craft in a building that is not only beautiful but also state-of-the-art. The conveniences that this building provides give our student-athletes a leg up on the competition and allows us to maximize the quality of training without having to extend the length of our training sessions. There are so many. There are people who I know will make me smile/laugh (Heather Copeland and Brian Ayers). People who help talk through things or just let me vent (Renee Schultz and Matt Crahan). But my #1 go-to is Colette Keyser…she is beyond special! One of the most caring, loving, supportive people I know. There is ZERO doubt that without her I would not still be at Belmont. Every day I feel like she is my biggest cheerleader, motivator and friend.

The Athlete Mentorship Program (AMP) helps initiate and develop relationships between Belmont student-athletes and professionals from a wide array of industries in the Nashville area. These connections provide the studentathlete with guidance and direction in areas such as personal goals, career development, networking and future employment opportunities. Additionally, AMP offers personal development that will assist student-athletes as they transition to life after Belmont. The hope for AMP participants is that the connection between the mentor and mentee will grow and develop into a longterm professional relationship. AMP is the brainchild of Belmont Athletics Director Scott Corley and was 2021–22 MEMBERSHIP GUIDE | 40
created in 2018. In the 2020-21 academic year, AMP’s third year of existence, 34 student-athletes from nine different sports participated in the program. This year’s group of mentors come from a number of career fields including accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, health care, music business, public relations, sales and sports. The group also boasts 14 Belmont alumni, including 10 former student-athletes.
