RADIO TIMES Tuesday 2 – Saturday 6 October Tue – Sat eve 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm
Music by Noel Gay. Book by Abi Grant Script revised by Alex Armitage
STARRING GARY WILMOT AND SARA CROWE Heart-warming and fast-moving, Radio Times is a fabulously entertaining musical, full of quick-fire gags, side-splitting routines and classic songs from Noel Gay (Me and My Girl). Highly praised by the national press, it features the combined talents of West End stars, Gary Wilmot and Sara Crowe with a company of The Watermill’s most gifted actor-musicians. Variety Bandwagon is about to broadcast live on radio to America for the first time. The clock ticks away, the line-up is shrinking and there is no sign of Sammy Shaw, the star of the show. With seconds to spare he arrives with Gary Strong, a Hollywood movie idol, in tow. The broadcast seems assured but Sammy’s girlfriend seems to know Gary of old and now nothing can be taken for granted. Featuring many well-known songs including Run Rabbit Run, Hey Little Hen and There’s Something About a Soldier, this memorable musical will send you home singing and dancing. “You’ll love it!”

THREE MEN IN A BOAT By JEROME K JEROME adapted from the novel by CRAIG GILBERT Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 November Wed – Sat eve 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm
KEEPING AUDIENCES LAUGHING FOR WELL OVER A CENTURY, JEROME K JEROME’S CLASSIC TALE OF BOATING MISADVENTURE HAS BECOME THE QUINTESSENTIAL EXAMPLE OF THE CHARM AND WIT OF VICTORIAN ENGLAND. Originally intended as a guide to boating on the Thames, Jerome’s ripping yarn of youthful friendship, mischief and folly celebrates the very essence of Britishness inspiring many of our comic legends from Morecambe and Wise to Monty Python. In an attempt to escape the stresses of city life three friends J, Harris and George accompanied by their faithful canine companion Montmorency decide to take to the river in order to relax and rejuvenate. The holiday, however, quickly unravels and descends into chaos… In this, our Diamond Jubilee and Olympic year, the award-winning Original Theatre Company takes this classic tale of British misadventure and folly by the scruff of the neck. Equipped with a working pub, live piano accompaniment, some ale, music hall singing, a dog and a feast of physical comedy, settle yourself in for a night out to remember. “Alastair Whatley’s full blooded revival”

THE HAUNTING Monday 26 November – Saturday 1 December Mon – Sat eve 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm
A JOURNEY TO THE VERY EDGE OF TERROR In an ancient, crumbling mansion, sheltering from the howling winds that tear across the surrounding desolate moorland, two men stumble across a dark and terrifying secret that will change their lives forever… When a young book dealer, David Filde, is employed by a former associate of his uncle to catalogue an impressive library, he finds an incredible array of rare and antiquated books. But as a series of strange and unexplained events conspire to keep Filde from his work, he realises that if he is to convince his sceptical employer that the mysterious phenomena he is experiencing are real, they must journey together to the very edge of terror, and beyond, to discover the source of the ghostly night-time visitations… Peter Bowles, one of the country’s most popular actors, has starred in a memorable array of TV series including, of course, To the Manor Born, Lytton’s Diary, Only When I Laugh, Rumpole of the Bailey and Executive Stress. He has more recently appeared on stage opposite Judi Dench in both Hayfever and The Royal Family in London. LEARNING THEATRE Earlier this year, Derby Theatre with the support of some of the country’s leading theatre experts, put in a bid to the Arts Council to part-fund and support the work it currently does, re-introduce professional, home-grown productions and further develop the Learning Theatre model. Derby Theatre’s case and plans were approved and the Arts Council awarded the theatre £923,000 of funding. The funds, which are being boosted by a grant from the University of up to £1.5 million over the next three years, will be used to support the on-going development of the Learning Theatre. The Arts Council said the Derby Theatre put forward a compelling case for funding and they expressed their delight at being in a position to fund the venue, which will ensure the city will be the hub for a wide range of creatively ambitious theatre. From September 2012, for a period of three years, Derby Theatre will develop and monitor the success of the Learning Theatre Pilot Programme - with the following objectives:
Uncontained Arts is a professional theatre company established by former graduates of the University of Derby Theatre Arts course in residence at Derby Theatre. Derby Theatre Learning is the umbrella term for all the education, outreach and participation work at Derby Theatre. There is a broad range of activities based in the theatre and the wider community for all ages.
• to secure Derby Theatre as public cultural asset for Derby and the East Midlands. • to bring high quality professional theatre artists to make and show work in Derby. • to become a national exemplar for education and training in theatre. • to provide the University of Derby with a distinctive proposition in the HE sector. • to engage the creative ability of Derby communities through the medium of theatre. Derby Theatre’s vision as a “Learning Theatre” is that it combines (and places equal value on) the university’s educational mission, a commitment to professional theatre and the need to nurture the next generation of theatre-makers through professional development and training. This vision will enable Derby Theatre to become a truly unique arts organisation in the UK and is a new effort to establish an exciting reputation in the arts.
Theatre Works If you see a performance with this logo you can be sure you will be seeing something that comes from the heart of what the Learning Theatre is all about. You may be seeing work from undergraduates, post-graduates now in the industry, professional partnerships with writers, directors, stagemanagers and designers or members of the local community. Those of you who have seen some of our previous shows such as Oleanna, The Tempest, The Country Child or Blonde will know that you are guaranteed work that is often original, accessible, exciting, aspirational and innovative.

Audio Described Ideal for blind and partially sighted people, audio description is a form of audio-visual translation using the natural pauses in dialogue or between critical sound elements to insert a narrative that translates the visual image into a sense form. Access performances times are indicated on page 19. Visit www.sceneandsound.co.uk where you will find access performance listings for other venues.
There is level access to the box office and cafĂŠ from Theatre Walk. The foyer, theatre, bar and studio can be accessed via the lift. All information in this brochure is correct at the time of going to print. For all our terms and conditions please refer to your ticket or our website.
