SPRING SEASON AT DERBy THEATRE We are delighted to introduce our spring programme, which includes brand new productions made in Derby by our in-house professional team: The Odyssey, written by the Olivier Award-winning playwright Mike Kenny, an epic story directed by our Artistic Director, Sarah Brigham (with the same creative team who produced Kes last season) and Penelope RETOLD, written by up-and-coming playwright Caroline Horton. Alongside this, we have great performances from our students and Youth Theatre, and the very best touring theatre from across the UK, including the long-running West End hit, The Mousetrap. We continue to develop as a key arts organisation in the region and go from strength to strength, developing your local theatre as a thriving artistic hub which produces and presents great productions for our audiences. We engage and work with our local artistic partners and community, and offer many different groups and participants a wealth of opportunities to learn about theatre and engage with us. We are encouraged by all of the positive responses we have received to support this work, especially those that have resulted in us securing a number of successful funding bids. We are also proud that Blanche McIntyre was awarded Best Director at the UK Theatre Awards 2013 for our recent production of The Seagull, made with our friends at Headlong and the Nuffield, Southampton. It’s fantastic that we’re able to show such support from a wide range of partners: our audiences are growing, our work in schools and the community is now thriving and we continue to expand our artists’ development programme. We would like to thank you, our audience, for spreading the word that a producing theatre making high quality work is very much open, vibrant and vital to the life blood of our city. We look forward to welcoming you back this season.

HORRIBLE HISTORIES: HORRIBLE CHRISTMAS It’s Christmas 2013 and something is not quite right. In fact, something is hideously, hopelessly, horribly wrong. As children wait for Father Christmas and all the presents are beneath the tree, a fat old man slides down their chimney and nicks the lot! Can this be the real meaning of old Saint Nick? But, by chance, one small boy spots the snatcher and sets off to save Christmas - from Puritan parties to Tudor feasts, pulling crackers with Charles Dickens and meeting St Nicholas himself! Can Christmas be saved for the world? A horribly adventurous Christmas treat for the whole family.

A TASTE OF HONEy A TOuCHINg TALE OF A yOuNg gIrL’s jOurNEy INTO ADuLTHOOD. Salford, 1959. 17-year-old Jo is desperate to break free from her vulgar, wayward, man-hunting mother, Helen. Resilient and feisty, Jo’s instinct for survival and happiness leads her to a taste of honey when she falls in love with Jimmy, a black sailor on shore leave. Abandoned by her mother, and left to cope on her own, Jo’s courage is tested yet again when Jimmy returns to sea, and she discovers she’s pregnant. Defiant in the face of convention, Jo moves in with her friend Geoffrey, a young art student, who assumes the role of surrogate father to her unborn child. As their relationship deepens, Jo discovers that her independent spirit is both her torment and her salvation. One of the most influential plays of its generation, A Taste of Honey was written when Shelagh Delaney was only 18. It burst onto the stage in 1961 in a production that took the West End by storm. Part of the post-war kitchen sink movement, the play later became a classic of British cinema.

HIRE A COSTUME

COSTUME CLUB

We hire costumes to professional, amateur and community theatre groups, schools and colleges. We have over 2,500 costume pieces built up over many years and are always adding to our stock. We can even make you something specific if we aren’t too busy.

Every third Saturday of the month, 2pm - 4pm beginning Sat 18 January

Our Head of Wardrobe is on hand to help, and we keep patterns, books on the history of fashion, and interesting bits. So if it’s advice or inspiration, or just a cup of tea and a natter about your needs and budget, get in touch. All our costumes come from past productions, or are items that have been kindly donated.

Do you love costumes from theatre and film? Come and join us for a social club where we will watch films and discuss eras and styles, have talks from local costume experts, work with designers from our produced shows and have a go at designing and making your own costumes. You could also help us with the costumes for the Community Play in July. Led by our fantastic Head of Wardrobe, Tim Heywood, who has extensive experience of working on costume in TV, film and theatre. £6 per session

SUPPORTING yOUR THEATRE It’s about more than just great shows here at Derby Theatre. As well as our exciting programme of professional plays, we also provide a fantastic range of opportunities for schools, the community and anyone who wants to creatively engage with us. As a registered charity, we provide clear public benefit in terms of the arts and education. However, the funding we receive and the Box Office income we generate only covers so much of the work we do, and the work we would like to do, with local people of all ages. So every pound of support that we receive will help us to achieve the ambitions we have for providing more opportunities for more people.

PLUS ONE A gift to inspire We have joined forces with Barnardos, alongside Déda, Derby LIVE, QUAD and sinfonia ViVA to provide looked-after children with the opportunity to see and experience live performance and film in the city. Plus One aims to inspire young people and spark an on-going interest in the arts and the cultural scene in Derby. For some young people, it will be the first time they go to the theatre or cinema with their foster family or carers.

Individuals and organisations can support us in a variety of ways, including: • Supporting looked-after children’s theatre visits • Regular donations • Gift Aid donations when purchasing your tickets • Leaving a legacy • Sponsoring a production • Corporate sponsorship

If you are interested in supporting us please contact our Business Development Manager, Andrew McIntyre, or visit the website to find out more. Telephone: 01332 593974 Email: a.mcintyre@derby.ac.uk

When booking your tickets, you will be given the opportunity to contribute to our Plus One scheme. Here at Derby Theatre, the recommended contribution is £10, but you can donate as little or as much as you like. Barnardos will co-ordinate the distribution of tickets.

Derby Theatre is a 10-minute walk from the train station, follow the signs to Westfield.

There are two park and ride bus services in Derby, from Meteor Centre retail Park, Mansfield road; or from Pride Park stadium south Car Park. They operate Monday to saturday and are ideal for matinee performances (please note, both services finish before 7pm so are not suitable for evening shows).
