SEBASTIAN FAULKS’
BIRDSONG Tuesday 16 – Saturday 20 April Tue – Sat eve 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm
A MESMERISING STORY OF LOVE, COURAGE AND SACRIFICE IS BROUGHT TO THE STAGE IN THIS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED VERSION OF SEBASTIAN FAULKS’ BEST-SELLING NOVEL. AN EPIC TALE SET BEFORE AND DURING THE GREAT WAR. In pre-war France a young Englishman, Stephen Wraysford, embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle Azaire that turns their world upside down. As the war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and through the sprawling tunnels that lie deep under ground. Faced with the unprecedented horror of the war, Stephen clings to the memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him. Following on from the hit West End production and an airing on BBC1, this brand new adaptation marks the very first touring production of the play. Performed by a dynamic ensemble company, including award-winning actress Sarah Jayne Dunn (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Hollyoaks); Charlie G Hawkins (Eastenders); Arthur Bostrom (’Allo, Allo’); Tim Van Eyken (War Horse); Tim Treloar (National Theatre, RSC) and introducing newcomer, Jonathan Smith as Stephen Wraysford.

COOKING WITH ELVIS BY LEE HALL Friday 26 April – Saturday 18 May Tue – Sat eve 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm
A RAUCOUS, FAST-PACED AND DELICIOUSLY DARK COMEDY FROM THE WRITER OF BILLY ELLIOT AND THE PITMEN PAINTERS. Set around the lives of four people: Jill, a fiendish cook who whips up one exotic dish after another; Mam, a troubled, anorexic, alcoholic; Dad, an Elvis impersonator forced to watch life from the sidelines; and Mam’s lover, Stuart, who has his cake and eats it. Mam’s appetite for sex, Jill’s obsession with food and Stuart’s fascination with the family, all combine and see the King unwittingly caught up in the chaos. Lee Hall’s Olivier Award-nominated play blends together all the essentials for comedy success: a dash of witty dialogue, a dollop of fantastic performances and a good glug of bawdy humour.
Cooking With Elvis was a huge success at the 1999 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in the West End, and now you can see it at Derby Theatre, in our first ever professionally produced show. Elvis has not left the building! Contains strong adult content and sexual references. INSIGHT: Free Post-Show Discussion After the Thursday 2 May, 7.30pm performance

FOLLOWING SELL-OUT SEASONS AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE, IN THE WEST END AND ON BROADWAY, BILL KENWRIGHT PRESENTS THE AWARD-WINNING PLAYTHE PITMEN PAINTERS. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. A humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

In The Seagull, Chekhov explores emotion, creativity and romantic conflict with the clarity of a doctor and the heart of a poet. This new version is a co-production between Headlong, described by the Daily Telegraph as “the country’s most exciting touring company” and renowned for their innovative, accessible re-imaginings of classic texts; and The Nuffield, Southampton, in association with Derby Theatre. Amidst hilarious games and complex friendships, an unexpected turn of events leads these seven children headlong into sudden tragedy one wartime summer. Dennis Potter’s charming and profound play takes us to a world of dappled sunshine and long, playful afternoons to remind us that no-one is ever truly innocent. Almost twenty years after his early death, Potter speaks to our fractious, changing world with a simple but powerful story about personal responsibility. The play captures his wicked humour and his fierce intolerance of cruelty. Moving, funny and unforgettable. INSIGHT: Free Post-Show Discussion After the Wednesday 26 June, 7.30pm performance

A DERBY THEATRE YOUTH THEATRE PRODUCTION
RUCKUS IN THE GARDEN By David Farr Friday 5 & Saturday 6 April Fri 5 & Sat 6 April, Fri 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm & 7.30pm
AS THEIR FIRST EVER PRODUCTION, DERBY THEATRE YOUTH THEATRE WILL PRESENT DAVID FARR’S MAGICAL COMEDY. Ruckus in the Garden is a very funny and entertaining look at the trials of being a teenager, with a modern nod to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It’s fast-paced and full of action as two rival schools meet on a school trip to a stately home and the Garden of Cecil Fortescue. Numerous fights break out between some unlikely opponents and the girls are just as feisty as the boys. However, the statues in the garden come to life, and start playing tricks on the teens, and that’s when things get really complicated; and some home truths are revealed. With an array of characters, including hopeless and sometimes hysterical romantics, a pacifist who gets beaten up, and a garden that is much more alive than first meets the eye; some issues are wrapped-up in the comedy and mayhem, allowing us an insight into the lives and pressures of young people today. Contains some mild swearing, a bit of snogging and a sprinkling of magic.

A swaggering opposition circles, impatient for insurrection. The body of the former dictator still lies unburied. Set in the present day but inspired by ancient myth, Welcome to Thebes offers a passionate exploration of an encounter between the world’s richest and poorest countries in the aftermath of a brutal war.

This themed showcase, presented by Derby Theatre Arts final year Shakespeare in Performance students, weaves a number of Shakespeare’s classic tales to tell an intriguing story of seduction, skulduggery and sin. You will be entertained by a deluge of the Bard’s most colourful characters from Cleopatra to Prospero, Isabella to Caliban, and Mistress Overdone to Enobarbus. So grab yourself a drink, take shelter from the storm outside and be enthralled by Shakespeare as you’ve never seen him before.
Why were some parts of the UK set alight in 2011, while many others were left untouched? Who is present at a riot? If the actions are 'mindless', what's in the mind? Three performers use text and torchlight to unpick the presumed causes of civil unrest. Based on the work of leading crowd and social psychologists, Professor Stephen Reicher and Dr. Clifford Stott, How to Start a Riot seeks answers to questions ignored in the post-riot political rhetoric - rhetoric which has remained remarkably similar for centuries. This debut show from Exeter-based theatre company, Worklight, opened to critical acclaim at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012 and brings a unique combination of stunning visuals and crowd psychology to theatres nationwide in 2013.
Britain, 2013. Times are hard, but the money’s still out there if you know where to look and are prepared to gamble. Whether it’s prison or the corporate world, there are rules to be followed. Only the fittest survive, it’s every man for himself. A searing, funny and thought-provoking new play from Ben Tagoe (Cold Turkey at Nana's – Oran Mor/Perth Theatre, Bittersweet Sunshine – Red Ladder and BBC Writers Academy), The Thing About Psychopaths asks important questions about power and empathy in modern Britain. Ah, love. Unexpected, it comes in all shapes and sizes, but if you haven’t been in love then that’s cool, we aren’t just reaching out to people who have been in love. It’s just that this story does seem to revolve around a central, love story. It’s well… a funny story. It’s about RAPE. Wait, don’t let them leave, barricade the doors. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we shall begin. With tears in your eyes and fire in your heart- you won’t leave empty-handed.
Delirious Theatre Company invites you to dance with the devil. A horrific war has rendered humanity on the verge of extinction. Two survivors desperate for salvation venture into an old funeral home in a final bid to find food. With their very existence in jeopardy, they pray for help, only it’s not God who comes to their aid but Lucifer himself.
