We provide inspiring opportunities for young people and communities to engage with the arts, whether for fun or as part of their education. We also support local people developing careers in the arts. We are mostly funded through sales of tickets and grants from our funders. This money allows us to do excellent work, but, like most charities, we also need public support in order to work with everyone, young and old, who can benefit from the theatre’s activities. Welcome to our autumn season As the nights start to draw in, I hope you will join us for some of the treats we have in store. The two jewels in the season are Stephen Sondheim’s multi-award-winning musical Sweeney Todd and our magical Christmas delight Alice in Wonderland. I’m delighted to be presenting Sweeney Todd with Mercury Theatre Colchester and welcoming back Daniel Buckroyd to direct. Expect Victorian high drama, a fantastic musical score and a talented ensemble cast, as the demon barber of Fleet Street comes to Derby. As with previous Derby Theatre Christmas productions, such as Cinderella and A Christmas Carol, our production of Alice in Wonderland will showcase a talented team of actor-musicians who will sing, dance and play music live on stage, all bringing the story to life. A bitter comedy and gripping story of infidelity. Emma and Jerry meet two years on from the end of their adulterous affair. Emma has betrayed her husband Robert. Jerry has betrayed his best friend Robert. But Robert has secrets of his own. As time peels backwards charting a seven-year love affair, a complicated and intricate web of lies and deceit is revealed, making us question who is betraying whom. Inspired, in part, by Harold Pinter’s affair with BBC presenter Joan Bakewell and written in 1978, the first production went on to win the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, as well as being adapted into an Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated film. Harold Pinter was a playwright, screen writer, director, political activist, actor and one of the 20th century’s most influential dramatists. He wrote thirty-two plays, twenty-two screenplays and directed thirty-six theatre productions. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005, and was awarded the Companion of Honour in 2002. His many awards include the Moliere D’Honneur for Lifetime Achievement, the European Theatre Award and the Legion d’Honneur.

A powerful story told through the eyes of a horse, which moves from life on a farm in peaceful Devon to survival on the Western Front in the First World War. Because we all need to pull together now. We want to talk about masculinity and patriarchy but the words that exist aren’t good enough. So there’s music and dance too. Fringe First winners 2010 & 2011 return with a playful new show about gender and language.

As seen on The John Bishop Show, Russell Howard's Good News, Live from the BBC, 'Josh' and heard on The Museum of Curiosity. In 2015, Felicity wrote a show about mental illness and her bumhole (IBS). Much to her surprise more people saw it than her immediate family and a guy called Gavin. At the Edinburgh Festival Fringe it was the third-best reviewed comedy show (out of 3000!). In 1945, Ildiko’s grandmother, Lucia, expelled from her home, walked 220 miles through the fractured landscape of Europe. In 2015, Zoo Indigo retraced her footsteps, crossing borders, bleeding, crying, carrying their ﬂat-pack children.

Anna is stranded. Beth came for a think. C just wants some kip. Three women meet by chance late at night. None of them really want to be there, yet none of them leave. With only loose change, some booze and a dodgy carrot at their disposal, will any of them find their way home? A darkly comic drama which challenges our understanding of home, purpose and charity. The part each actor plays is determined each performance by the roll of a dice, exploring the impact of chance and choice on the outcome of our lives.

No Woman’s Land is a darkly humorous stagger through past and present landscapes, exploring the post-apocalypse of 1945, migration, home and displacement. Stepping out of the 1920’s German Kabarett, the performers walk on treadmills immersed in a digital environment as they explore their own and Lucia’s journey.

Our seasonal scratch night, oﬀering a selection of new work from the most exciting artists in the region. This is a chance for artists to try new ideas in front of an audience and for audiences to feed into the development of the next big thing! Lear/Cordelia is an experimental double-bill: a radical reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear followed by Cordelia, a new play from the perspective of Lear's youngest daughter.

If you are aged between 8 and 18 and want the opportunity to work with professional theatre practitioners and perform on stage every year, apply today! We work towards a major annual show that is professionally produced on our main stage for our two older groups and in our studio theatre for the two younger groups.

Maison Foo, Associate Artists of Derby Theatre, will be opening their rehearsal doors to a small group of young and emerging artists, giving an opportunity to sit in on the devising and rehearsal process and learn how they cook up their unique style of mischievous visual theatre. This will be top and tailed with sessions with Maison Foo’s Artistic Directors and an invitation to an early sharing of the work.

This new company will work with professional directors to explore the ingredients that create exceptional theatre. You could be a performer, director, deviser or maybe you’re not quite sure but you know you want to work in theatre! We're not just looking for ability, but for people interested in working as an ensemble to bring ideas to life through play and experimentation. Friday 2 & Saturday 3 December Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, with his faithful spirit, Ariel, at his side, uses powerful sorcery to summon ‘The Tempest’ and shipwreck his usurping brother and conspirators. With them dispersed to all corners of an enchanted island, Prospero practises more illusion and trickery to gain revenge and restore his daughter, Miranda to her rightful place. University of Derby final year Theatre Arts students present a contemporary re-imagining of Shakespeare’s last solo play, conjuring a dark tale of magic, intrigue and romance.

Concessions are available for over-60s, under-16s, full-time students, registered unemployed, people with a disability and their carer, members of BECTU, Equity and the Writers’ Guild.

9.30am – 5.30pm

Performance days In person: 9.30am until 15 minutes after the start of the last event of the evening. Phones: 9.30am until half an hour before the first performance of the evening begins.

Children under two will only be admitted to suitable performances and must be in possession of a valid ticket (not available to book online).

Sundays and Bank Holidays

Groups of 10 or more, and school groups receive a discount on most shows, as well as a flexible booking process. See page 32 for more details.

Exchanges, refunds and reprints

We are only open on Sundays and Bank Holidays if an event is on.

All tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled.

We can exchange tickets for another performance of the same event at a cost of £1 per ticket. This must be done no later than 24 hours before the event in question and all tickets held by the customer, including print-at-home tickets, must be returned to the Box Office in person or by post. Tickets cannot be exchanged after the event has passed.

How to pay We accept all types of card payments, except American Express. Cheques are only accepted for group bookings of 20 or more. We can only reserve seats without payment for group bookings of 10 or more. We can post tickets to you if you are booking 7 days in advance, at a cost of £1. Otherwise, you can collect the tickets from us at your convenience, or we can email them to you to print at home.

Lost tickets can be reprinted free of charge no earlier than one hour before the start of the performance.

By car By train or by taxi By bus The most convenient car park is intu Derby basement car park (DE1 2PL) accessed from Traffic Street. To make life even easier you can buy your evening car park ticket at the same time you book your theatre tickets. Parking is only £2 after 6pm in this car park.

Derby Theatre is a 10-minute walk from the train station, follow the signs to intu Derby. We’ll be more than happy to order a taxi to be waiting for you after the performance, please ask at the Box Office upon arrival.

Trentbarton runs buses in Derby and to and from nearby towns and villages. Most buses stop at the bus station – just 5 minutes’ walk from the theatre. You can buy a reduced-price bus ticket with your theatre ticket from the Box Office – either a zigzag city play ticket (unlimited travel in the Derby city area for £2.50) or a zigzag play network ticket (unlimited travel across the whole network for £4.50).

Access for all Derby Theatre welcomes all customers and has an extensive range of services to ensure you have an enjoyable and comfortable visit. Mention your requirements when you book tickets, and don’t hesitate to ask the Duty Manager if there is anything you need on arrival. We have been verified as being an accessible venue for disabled people by CredAbility – an independent quality mark run by disabled people. Difficulty accessing visual information

Standing and queueing Derby Theatre has seating on all levels of the theatre. You can pre-order your drinks, tickets, merchandise, ice creams and programmes when booking your tickets to avoid queuing. These can be brought to you when you arrive. Our staff can bring refreshments to your seat inside the auditorium at the interval.

Wheelchair access We have a fully accessible drop-off point at the top of the theatre with a permanent ramped double-door entrance. Or alternatively you can park in intu Derby basement car park blue badge area and our lift, situated in bay C, will bring you directly to all floors of the theatre. We have large accessible toilets on all levels. We have low counters at the bar, Box Office and café. If you would like our brochure in large print please enquire at the Box Office. Where possible we provide audio-described performances. Ideal for blind and partially sighted people, audio description is a form of audio-visual translation using the natural pauses in dialogue or between critical sound elements to insert a narrative that translates the visual image into a sense form.

Difficulty accessing audible information Sound enhancement systems are available inside the theatre and studio. The best quality of sound is through our brand new Digital RF headsets, which are available to borrow free from Front of House. You could also take advantage of our new digital system by using your own earphones, to plug directly into the pocket-sized body packs. If you prefer to use the T switch on your hearing aid, please borrow an induction loop aerial. We can also offer assisted listening on backstage tours. Where possible we provide British Sign Language interpreted performances. We also have a Portable Hearing Loop which offers versatile, desktop assistance for people with hearing loss who use telecoil-equipped hearing instruments or cochlear implants.

Personal support We operate an Assisted Access Scheme for those who require somebody to be present in order to assist them to readily access theatre shows and, as such, we allow members to buy a seat for themselves at the standard rate and one for an assistant at no cost.
