Derby Theatre is part of
Support us Derby Theatre is a registered charity working to produce and support the very best in theatre-making in the region. We provide inspiring opportunities for young people and communities to engage with the arts, whether for fun or as part of their education. We also support local people to develop their careers in the arts. We are mostly funded through sales of tickets and grants from our funders. This money allows us to do excellent work, but, like most charities, we also need public support in order to work with everyone, young and old, who can benefit from the theatre’s activities. You can support us in many ways. Most simply, you can add a donation to your ticket purchase or drop some spare change into the donation box in our foyer. We’d love to hear from you if you would like to give more regularly, or make a larger donation to a specific area of our work. Derby Theatre is part of Arts Council England’s Catalyst scheme which means that any new donation received is matched by them. So if you donate £5 today it will ensure that £10 will be invested to support our charity’s work. For further details contact Andrew McIntyre: a.mcintyre@derbytheatre.ac.uk

Welcome to Derby Theatre’s spring season We have a fantastic array of shows, workshops and ways to get involved at Derby Theatre this spring. If you haven’t booked for Alice in Wonderland yet then do catch this blockbuster show whilst you can, which combines live music and delightfully curious characters in a production that will please all the family. I hope you will be as excited as I am to see Harold Pinter’s thrilling drama Betrayal. It is one of my favourite plays and we’ve assembled an exciting creative team for the show led by Director Lekan Lawal. I’m also delighted to be continuing our relationship with Octagon Theatre Bolton. After we took our critically acclaimed show Look Back in Anger to Bolton last year, this spring we welcome their creative team to Derby with the uplifting tale of self-discovery, Educating Rita. Why not see behind the scenes on these homegrown shows and take part in our Theatre Unwrapped programme, watching the show from backstage or learning how we mount the show technically? Especially for this season we include Pinter Unwrapped, a free event chaired by journalist and presenter Mark Lawson, discussing the work and legacy of one of the 20th century’s greatest playwrights. Another great night out guaranteeing lots of laughs is the line up of fantastic stand-up comedy we have on offer this season. So we hope you will dust off the winter cobwebs and come and join us. We look forward to welcoming you to Derby Theatre.

“Yeh. An’ it might be worthless in the end. But I had a choice. I chose, me. Because of what you’d given me. I had a choice.” Frank has almost given up. Bored of teaching undergraduate English students, despairing of his ambition to be a poet, he reflects morosely on his life. And then Rita walks in. A 29-year-old married hairdresser who has decided to take control of her life and earn herself an education. With Rita’s brash honesty and Frank’s deep intellect, each inspires the other as they both begin to wake up to life in their own way. Willy Russell’s award-winning and hugely popular comedy drama is an uplifting tale of self-discovery, where we witness how the power of choice comes through education.

Director Lekan Lawal Designer Neil Irish Lighting Arnim Friess Sound Paul Arditti
Friday 17 March – Saturday 1 April
Gripping drama with deception and betrayal at its heart.
“Neil Irish’s atmospheric set.” East Midlands Theatre (Look Back in Anger)
Emma and Jerry meet two years on from the end of their adulterous affair. Emma has betrayed her husband Robert. Jerry has betrayed his best friend. But Robert has secrets of his own. As time peels backwards charting a seven-year love affair, a complicated and intricate web of lies and deceit is revealed, making us question who is betraying whom. Inspired, in part, by Harold Pinter’s affair with BBC presenter Joan Bakewell, and written in 1978, the first production went on to win the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, as well as being adapted into an Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated film. Harold Pinter was a playwright, screen writer, director, political activist, actor and one of the 20th century’s most influential dramatists. He wrote thirty two plays, twenty two screenplays and directed thirty six theatre productions. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005.

The Original Theatre Company
Invincible By Torben Betts
Tuesday 31 January - Saturday 4 February
With the recession biting hard, Emily and Oliver have decided to downsize and shift their middle-class London lifestyle to a small town in the north of England. One night they open their doors and invite next door neighbours, Dawn and Alan, into their home. Over the course of a disastrous evening of olives, anchovies, Karl Marx and abstract art, class and culture collide with the consequences as tragic as they are hilarious. A riotously funny production written by Torben Betts, one of the most exciting playwrights to emerge since Alan Ayckbourn, and produced by the award-winning Original Theatre Company (Birdsong, Three Men In A Boat and Night Must Fall).

Northanger Abbey From the novel by Jane Austen
Monday 10 – Wednesday 12 April
A stylish, witty and fast-moving adaptation by Tim Luscombe of Jane Austen’s earliest novel. The young Catherine Morland loves a good read and the more fanciful, terrifying and horrid it is the better. So when the naïve 17-year-old is taken by her aunt to Bath and finds herself amidst a social whirl denied to her at home, it’s easy to get fact confused with fiction. Having met the charming, yet eccentric, Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor, she is invited to their home, Northanger Abbey. But with her head full of gothic fantasies from The Mysteries of Udolpho, will her wild imagination get the better of her judgement? A delightful new stage adaptation, marking the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. “Tim Luscombe’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds has all the shiny qualities of a piece penned yesterday.” ★★★★ The Telegraph

When The Eye Has Gone
An Evening with an Immigrant
By Dougie Blaxland
Written and performed by Inua Ellams
Sunday 5 March, 8pm
Saturday 11 March, 8pm
Set in the bar of The North Briton pub in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham during his final cabaret performance, When The Eye Has Gone tells the tale of the all too brief life of Colin “Ollie” Milburn - the cricketing legend who was one of England’s most unlikely sporting heroes.
Born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother in what is now considered by many to be Boko Haram territory, in 1996 award-winning poet and playwright Inua Ellams left Nigeria for England aged 12, moved to Ireland for three years, before returning to London. Littered with poems, stories and anecdotes, Inua tells his ridiculous, fantastic, poignant immigrant-story of escaping fundamentalist Islam, directing an arts festival, performing solo shows at the National Theatre, and drinking wine with the Queen, all the while without a country to belong to or place to call home. “Ellams’ poetry gleams with a dusty, worn, deeply original beauty.” Metro Age Guide 15+
Full of song, reminiscence and gallows humour, the story swings backwards and forwards in time as he drinks yet another large gin and coke and re-enacts vivid memories from his cricketing career and the disaster of losing his left eye in a car accident in 1969. Age Guide 15+

What is a preview performance? Preview performances are a fantastic opportunity to see a public performance in its early stages. The creative team are still in the process of applying final touches to the production and the great ticket price for these performances reflects this.
