Thank You Did you know that for every £1 you donate to Derby Theatre, Arts Council England will match it by £1? So your donation goes twice as far and has twice the impact. Thanks to the generous donations Derby Theatre has received over the last year, the charity has been able to work with 7,000 children and young people, many from schools in the most deprived communities, to help them discover and learn through drama and the work of the theatre. We've also been able to provide over 600 free theatre visits for children and young people in care or care leavers, through the Plus One scheme. Our Career Days have seen over 750 young people experience what it's like to work in a professional theatre and discover what a career in the arts could be like for them. All this has been made by possible by you - our audiences and supporters. Please help this excellent programme of work in the community to continue by making a donation to Derby Theatre. The easiest way for you to help is to add on a donation when you buy your tickets, either at the Box Office or online, or talk to our Business Development Manager, Andrew McIntyre on 01332 593974, a.mcintyre@derby.ac.uk Thank you for your support

Welcome to Derby Theatre’s summer season As we look ahead to the warmer months, I'm delighted to be introducing a fantastic summer programme of work to you. My undoubted highlight of the summer will be Departure Lounge Festival. If you haven't been to a Departure Lounge Festival before, then now's your chance. We'll be transforming the theatre into a buzzing festival site and inviting audiences to get up close to the very best in Fringe theatre over the three days. It's a bit like a shot of the Edinburgh Festival mixed with the thrill of an outdoor festival (but with less mud!) I do hope to see you here. Before that, we have a host of great touring theatre, from classics such as Northanger Abbey and Cyrano, to dance and circus with COAL and Super Sunday. And why not try a trip to our Studio theatre over the summer for the best in innovative new work? We can't wait for the return of the brilliantly funny Sleeping Trees with their show Sci Fi? and there's also fantastic storytelling about the unofficial inventor of the Butterfly stroke from Alice Mary Cooper in her show Waves. I saw it in Edinburgh last year and it's an absolute gem. Looking further ahead I'm very excited to be directing Neil Bartlett's brilliant adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. It's a story that I love and I can't wait to bring its amazing characters and the Dickensian era to life on our stage in our big autumn production. You'll discover that Peter Pan is also flying through our brochure in time for Christmas with Captain Hook chasing hot on his heels! Over in the Studio its the sly old fox who's on the heels of our cheeky Gingerbread Man, which will delight younger children. Book now for Christmas treats of live music and magical storytelling.

A Derby Theatre Production

Director Sarah Brigham Designer Barney George Lighting Tim Skelly

By Charles Dickens Adapted by Neil Bartlett

Saturday 30 September – Saturday 21 October

Derby Theatre brings this classic story to life in Neil Bartlett’s brilliant adaptation, using the magnificent language of Dickens’ original. Christmas Eve 1812, and a young orphan boy, Pip, stumbles upon a convict hiding out amongst the graves of the village churchyard. Terrified for his life, the boy agrees to help him. Two years on and Pip is invited to visit Satis House, the home of the wealthy, reclusive spinster Miss Havisham and her beautiful yet manipulative adopted daughter Estella. Falling deeply in love with Estella’s beauty, Pip vows to better himself and become a gentleman. But it is the chance meeting with Magwitch in the churchyard which has already set in motion a journey of transformation and discovery, forever changing the fortunes and destiny of young Pip. Don’t miss Sarah Brigham’s bold new production, featuring a talented ensemble of actors and evocative music from Ivan Stott, as it brings the Dickensian world of Estella, Miss Havisham and Pip to Derby Theatre’s stage.

Northanger Abbey From the novel by Jane Austen

Monday 10 – Wednesday 12 April

A stylish, witty and fast-moving adaptation by Tim Luscombe of Jane Austen’s earliest novel. The young Catherine Morland loves a good read and the more fanciful, terrifying and horrid it is the better. So when the naïve 17 year-old is taken by her aunt to Bath and finds herself amidst a social whirl denied to her at home, it’s easy to get fact confused with fiction. Having met the charming, yet eccentric, Henry Tilney and his sister, Eleanor, she is invited to their home, Northanger Abbey. But with her head full of gothic fantasies from The Mysteries of Udolpho, will her wild imagination get the better of her judgement? A delightful new stage adaptation, marking the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death.

Paris, 1640. Cyrano de Bergerac, a brilliant poet and swordsman, finds himself deeply in love with his beautiful cousin Roxane. Each day of his life is lived only for her - every poem he writes, every duel he fights. Set in the golden age of musketeers, Deborah McAndrew’s lively new adaptation brings fresh vigour to this swashbuckling tale of unrequited love. A Judgement in Stone Monday 12 – Saturday 17 June

Eunice struggles to fit in. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper the very reason for her awkwardness, long hidden and deeply buried, leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood on Valentine’s Day. The star cast includes award-winning TV and stage favourite Andrew Lancel, best known to Derby Theatre audiences for his portrayal of Brian Clough in The Damned United (April 2016) and to TV audiences for playing Frank Foster in Coronation Street and for the role of DI Neil Manson in The Bill. One Nighters Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle

Made in the Great War Friday 9 June, 7.30pm Eight years ago, Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with folk big band Bellowhead, bought a violin with a label inside showing the date 1915, and the words “Violin No. 6, Made in the Great War”. The violin had been started, but never finished, by a music hall performer from Leeds named Richard Spencer Howard who was conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35, and killed two years later at the battle of Messines near Ypres. The fiddle inspired Sam to develop a unique show to retell the story of Richard S. Howard, and of how the fiddle that he’d started lay dormant for over ninety years before being rediscovered. A heartfelt true story told in words and music and featuring the actual fiddle made by Richard S. Howard.

Featuring a family tree wider than The Wall and more subplots than anyone can follow, it’s a rollercoaster ride of beheadings, incest and war. Fun for all the family! Created by a team of some of the UK’s top comedy writers, Graeme of Thrones is an original and unauthorised parody on the international phenomenon that is Game of Thrones. Kvetch

Marat/Sade

by Steven Berkoff Friday 12 & Saturday 13 May, 8pm

by Peter Weiss Friday 19 & Saturday 20 May, 8pm

Berkoff’s Kvetch is a brutal exposé of the man on the train; the woman in the office; your partner; your friends and your secret gay lover. Presented on a canvas of colour, our participants do battle over tea and coffee. We’re all blissfully normal until someone puts a mic to our thoughts, right?

“The important thing is to pull yourself up by your own hair. To turn yourself inside out and see the whole world with fresh eyes” – Marat In this powerful and savage play, the inmates of the French asylum of Charenton, under the direction of the Marquis de Sade, perform The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat. Meanwhile the asylum owner invites sponsors to witness his patriotic version of the play, but de Sade and the inmates have a different plan – resulting in an unrelenting portrayal of the class struggle and of human suffering. Left with the fire of revolution in our hearts and the drumming of change in our heads the question is: does true revolution come from changing society or from change within ourselves? This contains scenes of nudity and sexual violence Suitable for age 16+

A much-needed insight into the psyche through five internal monologues set amongst everyday scenarios awash with striking imagery and dialogue. This amateur production of Kvetch is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD.
