Our Career Days have seen over 750 young people experience what it's like to work in a professional theatre and discover what a career in the arts could be like for them. Welcome to Derby Theatre’s summer season As we look ahead to the warmer months, I'm delighted to be introducing a fantastic summer programme of work to you. My undoubted highlight of the summer will be Departure Lounge Festival. If you haven't been to a Departure Lounge Festival before, then now's your chance. We'll be transforming the theatre into a buzzing festival site and inviting audiences to get up close to the very best in Fringe theatre over the three days. It's a bit like a shot of the Edinburgh Festival mixed with the thrill of an outdoor festival (but with less mud!) I do hope to see you here. Before that, we have a host of great touring theatre, from classics such as Northanger Abbey and Cyrano, to dance and circus with COAL and Super Sunday. And why not try a trip to our Studio theatre over the summer for the best in innovative new work? We can't wait for the return of the brilliantly funny Sleeping Trees with their show Sci Fi? and there's also fantastic storytelling about the unofficial inventor of the Butterfly stroke from Alice Mary Cooper in her show Waves. I saw it in Edinburgh last year and it's an absolute gem. Looking further ahead I'm very excited to be directing Neil Bartlett's brilliant adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. It's a story that I love and I can't wait to bring its amazing characters and the Dickensian era to life on our stage in our big autumn production. You'll discover that Peter Pan is also flying through our brochure in time for Christmas with Captain Hook chasing hot on his heels! Over in the Studio its the sly old fox who's on the heels of our cheeky Gingerbread Man, which will delight younger children. Book now for Christmas treats of live music and magical storytelling.

Christmas Eve 1812, and a young orphan boy, Pip, stumbles upon a convict hiding out amongst the graves of the village churchyard. Terrified for his life, the boy agrees to help him. Two years on and Pip is invited to visit Satis House, the home of the wealthy, reclusive spinster Miss Havisham and her beautiful yet manipulative adopted daughter Estella. Falling deeply in love with Estella’s beauty, Pip vows to better himself and become a gentleman. But it is the chance meeting with Magwitch in the churchyard which has already set in motion a journey of transformation and discovery, forever changing the fortunes and destiny of young Pip. One Nighters Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle

Made in the Great War Friday 9 June, 7.30pm Eight years ago, Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with folk big band Bellowhead, bought a violin with a label inside showing the date 1915, and the words “Violin No. 6, Made in the Great War”. The violin had been started, but never finished, by a music hall performer from Leeds named Richard Spencer Howard who was conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35, and killed two years later at the battle of Messines near Ypres. The fiddle inspired Sam to develop a unique show to retell the story of Richard S. Howard, and of how the fiddle that he’d started lay dormant for over ninety years before being rediscovered. A heartfelt true story told in words and music and featuring the actual fiddle made by Richard S. Howard.

Derwent Brass is no stranger to Derby Theatre, most notably appearing in the production of Brassed Off (2015). Meanwhile the asylum owner invites sponsors to witness his patriotic version of the play, but de Sade and the inmates have a different plan – resulting in an unrelenting portrayal of the class struggle and of human suffering. Left with the fire of revolution in our hearts and the drumming of change in our heads the question is: does true revolution come from changing society or from change within ourselves? The most convenient car park is intu Derby basement car park (DE1 2PL) accessed from Traffic Street. To make life even easier you can buy your evening car park ticket at the same time you book your theatre tickets. Parking is only £2 after 6pm in this car park.

Derby Theatre is a 10-minute walk from the train station, follow the signs to intu Derby.

Trentbarton runs buses in Derby and to and from nearby towns and villages. Most buses stop at the bus station – just 5 minutes’ walk from the theatre. You can buy a reduced-price bus ticket with your theatre ticket from the Box Office – either a zigzag city play ticket (unlimited travel in the Derby city area for £2.50) or a zigzag play network ticket (unlimited travel across the whole network for £4.50).

We’ll be more than happy to order a taxi to be waiting for you after the performance, please ask at the Box Office upon arrival.

Access

Access for all Derby Theatre welcomes all customers and has an extensive range of services to ensure you have an enjoyable and comfortable visit. Mention your requirements when you book tickets, and don’t hesitate to ask the Duty Manager if there is anything you need on arrival. We have been verified as being an accessible venue for disabled people by CredAbility – an independent quality mark run by disabled people. The relevant icons indicate how we can meet a variety of needs:

Standing and queueing Derby Theatre has seating on all levels of the theatre. You can pre-order your drinks, tickets, merchandise, ice creams and programmes when booking your tickets to avoid queuing. These can be brought to you when you arrive. Our staff can bring refreshments to your seat inside the auditorium at the interval.

Wheelchair access We have a fully accessible drop-off point at the top of the theatre with a permanent ramped double-door entrance. Or alternatively you can park in intu Derby basement car park blue badge area and our lift, situated in bay C, will bring you directly to all floors of the theatre. We have large accessible toilets on all levels. We have low counters at the bar, Box Office and café. We have designated wheelchair spaces inside the auditorium so please mention your requirements when booking.

Assistance dogs Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building. Please talk to the Box Office about any special requirements when booking.

Difficulty accessing visual information If you would like our brochure in large print please enquire at the Box Office. Where possible we provide audio-described performances. Ideal for blind and partially sighted people, audio description is a form of audio-visual translation using the natural pauses in dialogue or between critical sound elements to insert a narrative that translates the visual image into a sense form.

Difficulty accessing audible information Sound enhancement systems are available inside the theatre and studio. The best quality of sound is through our brand new Digital RF headsets, which are available to borrow free from Front of House. You could also take advantage of our new digital system by using your own earphones, to plug directly into the pocket-sized body packs. If you prefer to use the T switch on your hearing aid, please borrow an induction loop aerial. We can also offer assisted listening on backstage tours. Where possible we provide British Sign Language interpreted performances. We also have a Portable Hearing Loop which offers versatile, desktop assistance for people with hearing loss who use telecoil-equipped hearing instruments or cochlear implants.

Personal support We operate an Assisted Access Scheme for those who require somebody to be present in order to assist them to readily access theatre shows and, as such, we allow members to buy a seat for themselves at the standard rate and one for an assistant at no cost. A CredAbility Access Card with the +1 symbol entitles the cardholder to membership of our Assisted Access scheme.
