CHARLES DICKENS’

Director Sarah Brigham Designer Barney George Composer Ivan Stott Lighting Tim Skelly

by Neil Bartlett Friday 29 September – Saturday 21 October

Don’t miss Sarah Brigham’s bold new production, featuring a talented ensemble of actors and evocative music from Ivan Stott. Neil Bartlett’s brilliant adaptation uses the magnificent language of the original, bringing the Dickensian world of Estella, Miss Havisham and Pip to Derby Theatre’s stage. Christmas Eve 1812, and a young orphan boy, Pip, stumbles upon a convict hiding out amongst the graves of the village churchyard. Terrified for his life, the boy agrees to help him. Two years on and Pip is invited to visit Satis House, the home of the wealthy, reclusive spinster Miss Havisham and her beautiful, yet manipulative, adopted daughter Estella. Falling deeply in love with Estella’s beauty, Pip vows to better himself and become a gentleman. But it is the chance meeting with Magwitch in the churchyard that has already set in motion a journey of transformation and discovery, forever changing the fortunes and destiny of young Pip.

A Derby Theatre Production

Two By Jim Cartwright Directed by Sarah Brigham Friday 2 – Saturday 24 March

Next spring, Derby Theatre raises a glass with the brilliant, comic two-hander, Two, by Jim Cartwright. 1 pub. 14 different characters. 2 actors. In a pub in the North of England a bickering landlord and landlady take orders from the locals. As a range of colourful characters pull up a stool, the rich tapestry of their interconnecting lives is revealed. With the fragile relationship of our less than cordial hosts at breaking point, a rollercoaster of emotions unfolds. Jim Cartwright has written extensively for stage, television and radio with his hugely successful plays performed at the Royal Court Theatre, National Theatre, the West End and on Broadway. They have won numerous awards, including the Olivier and Evening Standard awards. “The writing is brilliantly, surrealistically and comically poetic.” Sunday Times (Two) ★★★★ “Another stellar production from Derby Theatre, brilliantly directed by Sarah Brigham.” Public Reviews (Derby Theatre production of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, 2014, by Jim Cartwright)

Noël Coward’s

Private Lives Tuesday 30 January – Saturday 3 February London Classic Theatre presents a major new touring production of Noël Coward’s sparkling comedy. Strong passions and even stronger personalities set the stage for a classic battle of the sexes. 1930. Deauville, France. Two newly-married couples occupy adjoining honeymoon suites in the same hotel. As a distant orchestra plays, Sibyl gazes adoringly at charismatic husband Elyot, while Victor admires his new wife, the vivacious and sophisticated Amanda. Champagne flows and the sea shimmers in the moonlight as the newlyweds prepare for the evening ahead. But when Amanda overhears a familiar voice singing a forgotten song, an old spark reignites, with spectacular consequences. Full of razor-sharp wit and quick-fire dialogue, Private Lives is Noël Coward’s most popular and enduring stage comedy. Extraordinarily written in only three days, Private Lives originally opened at London’s Phoenix Theatre in August 1930 to packed houses. Since then, this charming comedy of manners has retained its remarkable appeal, captivating audiences all over the world.

A Living

Freeman

Friday 22 September, 8pm

Friday 6 October, 8pm

Caroline is a receptionist. And an usher, and a sales assistant and a bar worker and a receptionist (but in a different building to the other one).

Inspired by the true story of William Freeman, a black slave who was put on trial in 19th-century New York, and the first case to raise ‘insanity’ as a defence. Exploring the relationships between people of colour, the criminal justice systems and mental health, the show spans from segregation in 1846 America to the death of Sarah Reed in a UK prison in 2016.

An average person will, over the course of their life, work over 97,464 hours. Caroline thinks that’s too much work for one lifetime. So she decided to make a show about it – it turns out that was quite a lot of work. Part rom-com, part lecture, part call to industrial action, A Living is a show about money, time and what really makes the world go round. Post-Show Discussion
