Discover Derby Theatre: A Learning Theatre Our doors are open – come and find out more! Here at Derby Theatre we provide unique access to our building, staff and creative teams to support learning right across the curriculum. Our exciting programme of workshops, shows and bespoke projects will inspire young people to engage with a whole range of subjects from English to Science. We also offer an exciting hands-on approach to understanding the wide range of careers in theatre, led by all of our staff who are trained to share their skills with others. We can also give you special access to practitioners from the whole theatre-making process, from designer to director, writer to actor who will help students explore and understand texts, theatrical concepts and processes. This Autumn, we present a double bill of Abigail’s Party, Mike Leigh’s classic 70s comedy, and its contemprary response play, Abi. As part of the development process for Abi, we held consultations with young people and schools in Derby to get their thoughts and ideas to feed into the content of the production. We’re delighted that school and college groups get tickets to see both shows for just £9.50. We also offer Arts Awards and can support you on your ArtsMark journey. We work in partnership with QUAD, Déda, Baby People, Derby Museums, Artcore, Sinfonia ViVA, the Music Partnership and EMCCAN to provide you with a one-stop shop for all your creative and cultural learning requirements. The Jungle Book

Sat 6 – Sat 20 April 2019 Join Mowgli as he plays in the colourful jungle, battles the ruthless tiger Shere Khan and with the help of his best friends Baloo and Bagheera, discovers what it really means to belong. All performances of this brand new Derby Theatre show will have fully integrated BSL interpretation and will be captioned. The Jungle Book Workshops

Mon 18 March – Fri 12 April 2019 For D/deaf and hearing participants, we will explore the physicality and the “laws” of the Jungle through the power of non-verbal communication. Production and Interpretation Workshop Fri 28 September – Fri 19 October An insight into the production elements that went into making this 70s classic. This can be helpful for GCSE/A Level Drama Live Review and builds students’ knowledge and understanding of how text is communicated and interpreted. Suitable for: KS4 - KS5 Duration: Up to 2 hours

Abi Sat 29 September – Sat 20 October A contemporary response to Abigail’s Party which tells the story of Abigail’s granddaughter Abisheera (‘Abi’ for short). Part of the RETOLD series of new one-woman plays (Jinny, Joan). The digital life of millennials is brilliantly captured in Abi. This vibrant show explores how a ﬁery 15-year-old girl experiences modern society by delving into her realm of boys, family, partying, ambitions and social media, with wit and ﬂair. Abi Writing Workshop Mon 24 September This new play was informed by the ideas, language and concerns of young people from secondary schools in Derby. There is now a limited opportunity for your schools to work with Athiha San Gupta, the award-winning playwright of Abi ,to echo this process in order for your students to produce some powerful new writing of their own. All of our Behind the Scenes sessions can be used to support the delivery of Arts Award. Discover the theatre and ﬁnd out about professional artists. We’ll inspire your pupils here, giving them the knowledge they need to help complete their award. These sessions can be held throughout the year so please enquire about dates.

Relaxed Performances We invite you to join us for special performances for people who will beneﬁt from a more relaxed performance environment, including people with an Autism Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorders or a learning disability. The play details the lives of four women through the immense social changes of the twentieth century. Using a kaleidoscopic time structure, Charlotte Keatley’s story focuses on four generations of one family as they confront the most significant moments of their lives. Written in 1985 and first staged at the Contact Theatre, Manchester, Charlotte Keatley’s award-winning play is the most commonly performed work by a female playwright worldwide.
