TUESDAY 7 - SATURDAY 11 MAY

“I don’t save or shield them. It’s as bad as I feared – they’re lost” 1840. A young governess agrees to look after two orphaned children in Bly, a seemingly idyllic country house. But shortly after her arrival, she realises that they are not alone. There are others – the ghosts of Bly’s troubled past. The Governess will risk everything to keep the children safe, even if it means giving herself up to The Others. Years later, confronted by the past she is compelled to account for what actually happened to her and the innocents under her protection. This new adaptation of Henry James’ iconic tale, which was the original inspiration for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, is a masterclass in stage-craft, with captivating performances, deliciously atmospheric set and lighting design and an evocative soundtrack.

LUCA RUTHERFORD’S

POLITICAL PARTY

FRIDAY 22ND FEBRUARY, 8PM Written & Performed by Luca Rutherford, Directed by Alex Swift
Do you ever get confused or overwhelmed by politics?
Do you ever feel like the only way to make a difference is to change everything? Do you ever think that if you can’t change everything immediately there’s no point trying? Luca reached a point where thinking about politics made her want to lie down on the pavement and not get up. Instead of doing this she is throwing a party. A political party. There will be drinks, dancing and eggs! No experts. No big words. This is a show about getting messy with the messiness of politics. TICKETS: £10 (£8 concessions) £2 off for

PINK LEMONADE FRIDAY 1 MARCH, 8PM Pink Lemonade is a multi-disciplinary solo show exploring masculinity and lesbianism in Black women, partly inspired by the rebellious butches of the early 20th Century and beyond. Fusing spoken word, sound and movement, the work examines how from childhood through to our intimate relationships as adults, social, racial and cultural stigmas can impact the way communities view themselves and others. Pink Lemonade aims to deconstruct micro-aggressions within the framework of intersectionality and seeks to transform the discourse around the fetishism of Black and Brown bodies. Developed with support from Talawa, Derby Theatre, In Good Company, Tamasha, Camden People’s Theatre and Arts Council England

MISSION ABORT FRIDAY 12 APRIL, 8PM One in three women in the UK will at some point choose to terminate a pregnancy. Worldwide, the number is one in four. Mission Abort is the important story about the human being behind the choice. Strong opinions on the legislation around female reproductive rights are voiced on a daily basis; Mission Abort “breaks the taboo around abortion with flair and gusto” (Edinburgh Festivals Magazine) by telling the story of one woman’s actual experience – from discovering she is pregnant, to making the decision, following it through and getting on with life afterwards. Described by The Stage as “a frank and funny glimpse into the mental and physical trauma of abortion”, this explosive one-woman play invites the audience along for a laugh-cry rollercoaster journey – asking the big question: how can a choice that is so right be so hard?

★★★★ “Mission Abort is a one-actor-show at its absolute finest.” Circle of Cinema TICKETS: £12 (£10 concessions) AGE GUIDE: 14+

What might he learn about himself? And what happens when he falls in love with a native? Pariah Khan is a writer and performer, voted one of Bristol’s 24 Most Influential Young People by Rife Magazine for his work in theatre and comedy. His debut one man show An Indian Abroad takes the trope of white adventurers exploring ‘foreign’ lands and spins this concept on its head, asking that all important question: what if a student from India took a gap year to Britain? ACCESS FOR ALL Derby Theatre welcomes all customers and has an extensive range of services to ensure you have an enjoyable and comfortable visit. We have been verified as being an accessible venue for disabled people by CredAbillity – an independent quality mark run by disabled people. More information can be found on our website: www.derbytheatre.co.uk/your-visit/accessibility If you require any assistance, information or support during your visit with us please inform the Box Office when booking your tickets, this way we can find the best seats for you and ensure our staff.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

Derby Theatre has limited wheelchair spaces in the main auditorium and studio, which need to be booked in advance through the Box Office. For our studio access is through the intu basement car park. We have a fully accessible drop-off point at the top of the theatre for access to our main auditorium with a permanent ramped double door entrance. Alternatively you can park in the intu basement car park in area C. There is a Derby Theatre lift situated inside the car park, which will give you full access to both floors of the theatre. We have accessible toilets on both levels of our building and our Café, Bar and Box Office all have low counters.

PERSONAL SUPPORT

We operate an Assisted Access scheme designed for those who require somebody to be present in order to assist them to readily access theatre shows. This scheme allows members to purchase one standard ticket and have one ticket for the assistant at no cost. To apply for the access scheme please contact the Box Office.
