WELCOME TO OUR SUMMER SEASON We’ve been busy over the last few months preparing for an incredibly exciting range of new shows. This Easter, we kick off our Summer season with our biggest production yet. 10 professional actor musicians and 30 community members will join together in the firm family favourite The Jungle Book. This is also the first time we’ll have British Sign Language throughout the production, allowing our Deaf community to access this fun family show filled with fantastic original songs. We certainly don’t stop when summer comes round, and as ever I can’t wait for our Departure Lounge Festival. We also will be welcoming a new generation of theatregoers with our special Summer show Five, which is perfect for ages 3-6. Looking ahead to Autumn I am really excited to announce we will be making One Man Two Guvnors, in co-production with our friends at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. Set in 1960s Brighton, this hilarious comedy with superb live music is going to be the night out of the season, and will certainly keep you feeling warm as the autumn nights draw in. Please do tweet me @SarahBrigham, or drop me a letter or email to tell me what you’re enjoying this season and I look forward to welcoming you to the theatre soon.

YOUNG ARTISTS

SECOND PERSON NARRATIVE & SKELLIG THURSDAY 18 & FRIDAY 19 APRIL, 2PM & 6.30PM Derby Youth Theatre’s year 7-9 groups have chosen two plays from a range of compelling scripts to perform with their own twist. Expect thrilling adventures, imaginative characters and surprising plot twists. This is an evening of theatre not to be missed.

Second Person Narrative by Jemma Kennedy

‘Off you go then and best of luck. It’s bound to be different this time though some of it might seem familiar. The big questions, we mean the beginnings, middles, endings, etcetera. Still, not to worry, it’s all a work-in-progress.’ You’re born a girl. You grow up. You grow old. You die. But along the way can you really forge your own identity? Can you actually choose your own destiny? And would you do anything differently if you could do it all over again?

Skellig by David Almond

Michael is facing change, and when that change coincides with his baby sister’s illness he becomes uncertain of the world around him. Whilst exploring his new home, he discovers something magical in the old rundown garage; a mysterious creature called Skellig who needs his help. With his new friend Mina, he helps Skellig gain his strength, and Michael’s world begins to change forever TICKETS: £8 (£6 concessions)

A THOUSAND REASONS NOT TO FLY & LITTLE CRIMINALS FRIDAY 14, 6.30PM & SATURDAY 15 JUNE, 2PM & 6.30PM Both Youth Theatre groups chose their favourite play out of a selection of exciting and compelling scripts and can’t wait to perform their versions of the stories they loved the most.

A Thousand Reasons Not To Fly by Daniel Jamieson Being a parent is hard: so many worries and dangers galore. Misha and her grandad have a relationship full of adventure and risk, but this is a challenge for her over-protective parents. Who should Misha listen to as she grows up and starts making decisions for herself? A comic exploration of parenting, a risk-taking grandad and one girl’s dreams.

Little Criminals by Evan Placey ‘Once upon a time children behaved, Once upon a time children saw you and waved’ A group of well-known characters are sent to trial, including a certain golden girl who breaks entry into three bears’ house… But are they really criminals, or victims of adults who have been quick to judge? TICKETS: £8 (£6 concessions)

To further complicate things, Francis nabs a second job working for that very Stanley Stubbers who is hiding from the police. All Francis has to do is ensure his two guvnors don’t meet. TUESDAY 23 - SATURDAY 27 APRIL

Reserved and dutiful like his father before him and with the funny and forthright housekeeper Kenton by his side, Stevens faithfully serves his employer. Meanwhile, England stands on a precipice, as fascism builds and boils in Europe. 20 years later, Stevens travels to find an old friend, remembering choices made and not made, journeying to one last chance at happiness. TUESDAY 7 - SATURDAY 11 MAY

“I don’t save or shield them. It’s as bad as I feared – they’re lost” 1840. A young governess agrees to look after two orphaned children in Bly, a seemingly idyllic country house. But shortly after her arrival, she realises that they are not alone. There are others – the ghosts of Bly’s troubled past. The Governess will risk everything to keep the children safe, even if it means giving herself up to The Others. Years later, confronted by the past she is compelled to account for what actually happened to her and the innocents under her protection. This new adaptation of Henry James’ iconic tale, which was the original inspiration for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, is a masterclass in stage-craft, with captivating performances, deliciously atmospheric set and lighting design and an evocative soundtrack.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). PRICKS FRIDAY 24 MAY, 8PM I’ve had over 70,000 pricks… of the medical kind. This is my chance to set the record straight about Type 1 diabetics like me. Despite what people say, I’m not bankrupting the NHS. And I can eat cake – a whole bloody cake – if I want to. This urgent, funny new show blends warmly engaging storytelling with poetry and an original soundscape. It tells a surprisingly moving and uplifting story about families and learning to care for each other better. Join me as I learn to cope with the ups and downs of dealing with a lot of pricks. “It’s entertaining; it has humour and pathos, some anguish, some anger and not a little sadness but, ultimately, positivity and happiness.” British Theatre Guide

A SUPER HAPPY STORY (ABOUT FEELING SUPER SAD) SATURDAY 25 MAY, 8PM A hilarious cabaret musical about depression, that explains, sings, and throws glitter about how it’s OK not to be OK. Sally’s a happy person. She doesn’t let little things get her down and almost never cries. But she’s got an illness. It makes her feel like she isn’t the person she wants to be, but she doesn’t want anyone to know about it. Written by Olivier award winner Jon Brittain (Rotterdam and Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho) with music by Matthew Floyd Jones (Frisky & Mannish). It’s a joyful, buoyant, gleeful, slightly silly, sugar coated, unrelenting and completely super happy show! Except for the bits about depression. AMERICAN IDIOT WEDNESDAY 10 - SATURDAY 13 JULY, 7.30PM & 4PM ON SAT In the first fully staged MT Experiment, Matt Powell presents the high-octane, Grammy and Tony Award-winning hit musical: Green Day’s American Idiot. A dynamic restaging of the hit musical, American Idiot transports you into a timeless protest of repeated history, the show follows stories of friendship, the ongoing cycles of conflict across the Western World, and how we can speak up, act out and cause change in the 90-minute epic of a Rock Opera. Johnny, Tunny and Will struggle to find meaning in their lives. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. An energy fuelled rock opera, American Idiot, features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the story line. Featuring a cast spanning all generations and Musical Theatre stars of the future, this theatrical event promises to be an unmissable epic that will immerse you into a site of protest, speaking against the dangers our world faces.
