WELCOME TO OUR AUTUMN SEASON I’m really excited to be starting the season by taking you to the Brighton seaside in the swinging sixties with our co-production of One Man, Two Guvnors with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. With plenty of comedy and live music, it’s the perfect night out this autumn. I’m also thrilled we’ll be partnering with Queen’s Theatre again next year on a production of Shakespeare’s epic masterpiece, Macbeth. Our much-loved production of A Christmas Carol returns to the Derby Theatre stage this festive season, directed by Oliver O’Shea. For our younger theatregoers, following the success of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Gingerbread Man, Hiccup Theatre return with a new production of Little Red Riding Hood. With plenty of humour, live music and quirky charm, it’s the perfect Christmas treat for ages 3+. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for our Community, Student and Youth picks in the brochure. These groups meet with our Programming and Community Co-ordinator, Lauren to choose together a show that will be performed in our Studio. This season, our groups have selected three fantastic shows; Queens of Sheba, Fitting and You’re In A Bad Way. Richard Bean’s smash-hit comedy premieres in Derby for a limited run this Autumn. Directed by Sarah Brigham, featuring a side-splitting mix of slapstick comedy, farce and live music by a talented skiffle band, One Man, Two Guvnors is one great night out. After being fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall is skint and hungry. He manages to secure a new job as a minder for small time gangster Roscoe Crabbe. What Francis doesn’t know, is his new guvnor is really Roscoe’s sister Rachel in disguise as her own dead brother, who has been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers.

Neil Duffield’s stunning adaption of Charles Dickens’ treasured novel returns to the Derby Theatre stage for Christmas 2019. On Christmas Eve, the cruel humbug Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner Jacob Marley to warn him to change his miserly ways. After midnight, three spirits guide Scrooge on a journey through his Christmases past, present and future, to reveal the errors of his cold-heart. Along the way he encounters the mistletoe and merriment of Mr Fezziwig’s dancing party, Tiny Tim’s generous Christmas spirit and the true consequences of his meanness. Made in Derby and performed by a talented ensemble cast with live music and carols, this much-loved festive story will be a heart-warming experience for all the family this Christmas.

There is an exciting week planned of theatre, workshops, family activities, tours, arts & sports activities for schools, BSL film festival, subtitled films and much, much more. There is something in the festival for everyone, people of all ages, both Deaf and hearing. In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. WASTELAND, Gary Clarke’s sequel to COAL, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance. WITH THE TONY KOFI SEXTET SUNDAY 6 OCTOBER, 7.30PM More than a milestone in jazz, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is a defining document of twentieth century music, one of those incredibly rare works of art that achieve equal popularity among musicians, critics and the public at large. Even if you’ve never owned a copy of this classic album it’s tunes have become part of the global soundscape and you’ll instantly recognize So What, Freddie Freeloader, Blue in Green, All Blues and Flamenco Sketches as old friends. Highly innovative at the time of its release Kind of Blue has widely influenced subsequent music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres. Tony Kofi is the UK’s leading alto saxophonist and one of the few UK artists to have recorded in New York. His experiences from these travels, particularly cultural differences, encounters with foreign sign language users, hearing people and his family members are shared with the audience in a hilarious manner. His stand up work has been seen almost all over Northern Europe. Gavin has also created comedy sketches and films that can be seen on social media. Outside of the stage he does a range of sign language training and consultation work. A bubbly and naturally funny character, Gavin’s stories are sure to make your day a little better!

Our Youth Theatre provides young people aged between 8 and 18 the opportunity to not only enjoy theatre, but also to explore their creativity and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. Working with professional theatre practitioners, all groups work towards a major annual project, developing performance skills, gaining confidence and making friends along the way. LOVE TO LEARN AT UNIVERSITY OF DERBY The Learning Theatre provides a unique opportunity for students to learn their craft by working alongside both academics and theatre professionals in the heart of a producing theatre. In partnership with the University of Derby, the theatre provides an extraordinary platform for real life learning to take place, not only through the exciting main stage and studio programmes but also through the work that the theatre does with young people, young people in care, emerging artists and the community. There is no other model like this in the country and we are leading the world in this way of working. We accept all types of card payments except American Express. Cheques are only accepted for group bookings. We can post tickets to you via 2nd class post if you are booking seven days in advance, at a cost of £1. Otherwise, you can collect the tickets from us at your convenience, or we can email them to you to print at home.
Previews are a fantastic opportunity to see the very first public performances of a Derby Theatre production at a reduced price. The discount reflects that the creative team are still in the process of applying the finishing final touches to the production and there is a slightly increased chance that a Preview Performance may start late or be postponed or cancelled.

ACCESS FOR ALL Derby Theatre welcomes all customers and has an extensive range of services to ensure you have an enjoyable and comfortable visit. We have been verified as being an accessible venue for disabled people by CredAbillity – an independent quality mark run by disabled people. ASSISTED ACCESS SCHEME
Our Assisted Access scheme is designed to assist people with disabilities to attend performances at Derby Theatre. We are committed to enabling all people to participate in our activities equally and with dignity.
Sound enhancement systems are installed in the main auditorium. We offer Digital RF Headsets and induction loops which can be picked up from our Front of House team.
Under our Assisted Access scheme we offer: A ticket in the seat that best meets your access needs for the price of the cheapest seat available at the time of booking. A free ‘essential companion’ ticket if you need another person to accompany you to the theatre to assist you with accessing the facilities. Individuals wishing to sign up to our Assisted Access scheme need to complete a form which can be downloaded from our website or at our box office.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS Derby Theatre has limited wheelchair spaces in the main auditorium and studio, which need to be booked in advance through the Box Office. For our studio access is through the intu basement car park. We have a fully accessible drop-off point at the top of the theatre for access to our main auditorium with a permanent ramped double door entrance. Alternatively you can park in the intu basement car park in area C. There is a Derby Theatre lift situated inside the car park, which will give you full access to both floors of the theatre. We have accessible toilets on both levels of our building and our Café, Bar and Box Office all have low counters.
PERSONAL SUPPORT We operate an Assisted Access scheme designed for those who require somebody to be present in order to assist them to readily access theatre shows. This scheme allows members to purchase one standard ticket and have one ticket for the assistant at no cost. To apply for the access scheme please contact the Box Office.

CAPTIONING BY THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE
Some performances provide captioning using the Difference Engine – a tool that can be downloaded onto your smart phone or tablet prior to the show.
ACCESSIBLE PERFORMANCES Across our season we offer (where possible) a range of accessible performances. These include Audio Described, Sign Language Interpreted and Captioned performances. On certain productions we also offer Relaxed Performances which are open to everyone but perfect for those who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. We also now offer Dementia Friendly performances which supports people living with Dementia and their carers, family and friends to enjoy the show in a relaxed and supportive environment.
