WHAT WE DO
Plus One is a programme which has been designed specifically for young people who are, or have been, in care and is all about connecting people. That includes working with awardwinning writers and directors and some great local arts organisations to offer activities most people don’t get chance to do. So, the major arts and cultural organisations in Derby have joined forces to provide exciting opportunities for young people to experience and participate in a wide range of arts activities.
Everything from producing a new play for theatre, street dancing to music recording and even film making. You might enjoy the technical side of staging a performance, or the opportunity to work with a writer or poet, make an animated film or help produce and host arts events throughout the city and beyond!
We are currently working with a young person in care/care leaver or a young person yourself and aged 25 or under.
Below is a list of the range of people we currently work with through the Plus One programme:
Young people in care and care leavers
Local Authority Care Teams
Residential Children’s Homes Virtual School Heads
Social Workers and Key Workers
Charities supporting Children and Young People in care
Foster Carers
Creative Mentors
If you represent any of the above, then we would welcome you to join Plus One as a member.

Ongoing Plus One Opportunities
Plus One throughout Oct – Dec have been running regular weekly workshops both at Derby Theatre and within Resident Children Homes in Derby.
On Monday evenings at Derby Theatre our Creative Group have been working with various Artists, writing stories and poetry, learning both dance and drama skills. Are sessions are supported by both the Plus One team and a Creative Therapist.
Our Creative Mentors have been rotating around the four residential children’s home in the city of Derby. Over the six weeks young people have engaged with Rapper Zeo, DJ Joe S and Visual Artist Jonezy. The sessions are aimed at providing creative enrichment to the residential spaces and are ‘no pressure workshops’ facilitated with a relaxed approach. Young people have learnt new creative skills and two young people recorded an outstanding track with Zeo.
A huge congratulations to the young people who have engaged with both opportunities. A big thank you to the artists who have helped facilitate this brilliant provision.
Both sessions will be continuing in 2023.
Monday group will continue to meet at Derby Theatre, 18:00 – 19:30.
If you are aged between 10 – 14 and would like to find out more, please get in touch!

January 2023, 5pm!!
Get in touch if you would like to attend!
The Children in Care Council is a group open to children and young people, aged between 10 and 24, who are looked after by Derby City Council and have experience of being in care.
What do we do? We discuss issues that matter to us and other young people in care, to help those working with us to make changes and make things better.
• “It’s good for socialising with new people” (quote from member).
• “It builds your confidence in talking” (quote from member).
• We discuss issues that matter to us and other young people in care.
• Sometimes we invite guests to come and talk to us.
• We campaign for changes to make things better.
• We get involved in opportunities, like the Takeover Day
How do we make a difference?
• We talk about the issues that are important to us, as children and young people, and help make positive changes to improve things for everyone.
• We get involved in training and recruitment and give our views.
• We deliver reports to corporate parenting committee.
• We asked for the social worker profiles to go to all looked after children, so they know who their social worker is and how to contact them.
Where do we meet? We usually meet on Wednesdays 6 times a year 5pm – 6.30/7pm in various venues which can be suggested by our members…. after all this is their meeting.
The Fun Stuff! It is a chance to have some fun, make friends and make a difference at the same time.
• We organise trips and activities to celebrate our achievements.
• Regional Residential Trips.
• We have food together.
• Takeover Day.
How can I get involved? We would welcome you, your views and opinions. We are a small group and we're all in the same boat, so don’t be shy – come and join in! If you’d like to bring an adult with you then that’s fine too, we know it can be hard joining a new group, but we’re all very welcoming and enjoy meeting new members. If you can’t attend a meeting, please send us your email address and you can become a virtual member.

DONATE
Plus One is an award-winning scheme for looked after children and care leavers to take part in cultural opportunities across Derby City.
Derby Theatre, Déda, QUAD and Baby People together with care services across Derbyshire have joined forces to provide young people and their families, with the chance to experience live performances, films, and take part in a host of exciting opportunities.
Plus One supports young people to participate in a range of arts activities working with a team of professional artists to help raise their future aspirations by nurturing talents and developing skills in a safe and creative environment.
Funded primarily through public donations, your continued generosity over the past years has helped over 2,000 young people and their foster families to enjoy cultural experiences which, for some of these young people will be the first time they will have visited the theatre or cinema.
Your donation to Plus One makes a massive difference. Experiencing the arts can spark a lifechanging journey for a young person and their families.
You can donate anytime by visiting our Plus One page or when booking tickets at either Déda, Derby Theatre or QUAD to contribute to the Plus One scheme or calling Box office: 01332 59 39 39
