AGATHA CHRISTIE

A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED

PART OF THE SEASON TICKET

Tuesday 29 January – Saturday 2 February Tue – Sat eve 7.30pm, Wed & Sat mat 2.30pm

THE VILLAGERS OF CHIPPING CLEGHORN ARE AGOG WITH CURIOSITY OVER AN ADVERTISEMENT IN THE LOCAL GAZETTE WHICH READS: ‘A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED AND WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 29TH, AT LITTLE PADDOCKS AT 6.30 P.M.’ A childish practical joke? Or a hoax intended to scare poor Letitia Blacklock? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out… What follows is a classic Christie puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities, a determined Inspector grimly following the twists and turns and the inimitable Miss Marple on hand to provide the final solution in a dramatic confrontation scene just before the final curtain. The production stars Dean Gaffney, best known for his eleven years as Robbie Jackson in EastEnders who is also a noted stage actor, Gemma Bissix, another EastEnders star as a child but better known these days for her award-winning role as the villainous Clare Devine in Hollyoaks, Katy Manning, the iconic Doctor Who assistant Jo Grant, John D. Collins – ‘Allo, ‘Allo’ s Flying Officer Fairfax and Geraldine Newman – Ever Decreasing Circles. One of Agatha Christie’s best mysteries, this production also boasts a fascinating cast of characters and an affectionate picture of a post-WWII English village in which Ian Dickens Productions will yet again deliver an evening of intriguing plots, subterfuge and murder by the mistress of ‘whodunits’.

In a world which is just on the edge, are we all losing the plot? Losing the Plot comes off the back of two recent critically acclaimed productions by John Godber. ‘Richly comic love story’ The Guardian on Happy Jack ‘Marvellously funny’ The Times about Lost & Found

WRITTEN BY SUSAN MOFFAT, DIRECTOR OF AWARDWINNING NEW VIC BORDERLINES, ALL OUR DAUGHTERS? AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF FORCED MARRIAGES AND SO CALLED HONOUR VIOLENCE WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES. "It was supposed to be a family holiday, it's a beautiful place with mountains, rivers, and loads of donkeys". Marriage is the last thing on her mind, she's fine as she is for now, watching the footy with her dad, helping her mum with the cooking and watching Zac's back. Why is a son like a bar of gold and daughter a piece of white silk? What does honour mean, and what is family? “INTO MY HEART AN AIR THAT KILLS FROM YON FAR COUNTRY BLOWS: WHAT ARE THOSE BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS, WHAT SPIRES, WHAT FARMS ARE THOSE?” AE Housman Dennis Potter’s charming and profound play captures his expansive humanity, wicked humour and fierce intolerance of ordinary cruelty. The story of seven children during one wartime summer, whose hilarious games, complex friendships and moral dilemmas lead them headlong into sudden and unexpected tragedy. Almost twenty years after his early death, Dennis Potter speaks to our fractious, changing world with a simple but powerful rhetoric about personal responsibility. He takes us to a world of dappled sunshine and long, playful afternoons in order to dramatically remind us that no one is ever truly innocent. Moving, funny and unforgettable.

Final year Theatre Arts – Shakespeare in Performance students present a themed showcase of work drawn from a variety of Shakespeare’s plays. Engaging with some of the Bard’s most famous later works from Antony & Cleopatra to The Tempest, the company will blend traditional and contemporary techniques to present a refreshing mix of scenes and extracts as part of a themed evening. With all the usual panache and quality associated with Theatre Arts public performances, Breaking Bard brings a contemporary flair to some Early Modern masterpieces. For Shakespeare and nonShakespeare fans alike.

Why were some parts of the UK set alight in 2011, whilst many others were left untouched? Who is present at a riot? If the actions are 'mindless', what's in the mind? Three performers use text and torchlight and unpick the presumed causes of civil unrest. Based on the work of leading crowd and social psychologists Professor Stephen Reicher and Dr. Clifford Stott, How to Start a Riot seeks answers to questions ignored in the post-riot political rhetoric - rhetoric which has remained remarkably similar for centuries. This debut show from Exeter-based theatre company Worklight opened to critical acclaim at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012 and brings a unique combination of stunning visuals and crowd psychology to theatres nationwide in 2013.

Britain. 2013. Times are hard, but the money’s still out there if you know where to look and are prepared to gamble. Whether it’s prison or the corporate world, there are rules to be followed. Only the fittest survive. It’s every man for himself. A searing, funny and thought-provoking new play from Ben Tagoe (Cold Turkey at Nana's – Oran Mor / Perth Theatre, Bittersweet Sunshine – Red Ladder and BBC Writers Academy), The Thing about Psychopaths asks important questions about power and empathy in modern Britain. HOW TO BOOK Box Office

How to Save

The box office is open from 10am-6pm Monday to Saturday. When there is an evening performance, the phone lines are open until 30 minutes before the first event of the evening, and the box office will stay open to in person callers until 15 minutes after the last event begins. On Sundays and Bank Holidays, the box office opens from 6pm or an hour prior to the first event of the day (whichever is earliest), and is closed when there is no performance. Opening times can be subject to slight change throughout the year, which are detailed on our website and on front of house signage. You can book securely online, with the option of picking your own seats, at derbytheatre.co.uk.

Concessions are available on certain performances for full-time students, children under 16, people over 60, disabled people and their carer, registered unemployed and groups of 10 or more. Children under 3 are only admitted to events aimed specifically at children and must be in possession of a valid ticket.

Payments We accept all types of card payments apart from American Express. Cheques are only accepted for group bookings of 20 or more. Tickets cannot be reserved without payment other than for school bookings and groups of 10 or more. Please note that all transactions will be subject to a small fee to help with the restoration of the theatre. Tickets can be posted to you for a fee of £1 if the performance is more than seven days away. They can be collected from box office at your convenience or emailed to you to print at home free of charge.

Exchanges, Refunds and Reprints All theatre tickets are non-refundable. We can exchange tickets for another performance of the same show for a fee of £1 per ticket. Exchanges can only be done 24 hours prior to the start of the event in question, and all tickets held by the customer must be returned to box office in person or by post. Lost tickets can be re-printed free of charge no sooner than 60 minutes before the start of the performance.

Getting Here Derby Theatre is located on Theatre Walk in the Westfield shopping centre. The most convenient car park is the Westfield Basement directly beneath the theatre. Spaces are limited, so please leave plenty of time to park in case you have to use one of the many other city centre car parks, particularly for matinee performances. The theatre is a short taxi ride from the train station or a 10-minute walk, follow the signs to Westfield. Please ask at the Box Office or Front of House if you’d like a taxi to be ordered for after the performance.
