welcome Welcome to Derby Theatre’s spring season. following the fantastic success of Brassed Off and record numbers already booking for Cinderella, we look forward to sharing more home-grown Derby Theatre productions and we are delighted you seem to be enjoying them so much. “What an absolutely inspiring, tear-jerking, wonderful show.” Audience member on Twitter. We’re also delighted that we are receiving recognition in the national press: “Increasingly the most crucial theatre in the region.” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian. Look Back in Anger, a passionate drama set in an East Midlands town, will be our big production for the spring. We mark the 60th anniversary of this seminal play, which became renowned for changing the face of British drama by putting on stage the voice of the ‘Angry Young Man’. This classic play is brought to Derby by the same team that brought you Brassed Off, Solace of the Road and The Rise & Fall of Little Voice. Alongside this piece we’ve also commissioned a Look Back in Anger for today – Jinny is written by upcoming playwright Jane Wainwright, an exciting new voice in theatre, originally from Derbyshire and currently also under commission to BBC Radio 4. Take a look at the best in touring theatre including a host of family theatre, some great big hitting titles and the best in cutting-edge fringe theatre in our Studio. At Derby Theatre, it’s not just about the great shows you can see - there’s also a fantastic range of learning opportunities. We’re delighted, once again, to be offering our Theatre Unwrapped programme where all events are FREE. So take a look through the brochure to see what inspires you and come and join us.

A Derby Theatre production

Cinderella Friday 4 December - Saturday 9 January

Celebrate the festive season with a Derby Theatre Christmas family show – a magical tale performed by a merry band of actor-musicians. Inspired by the traditional Grimm’s fairy tale, Olivier Award-winning writer Mike Kenny creates a fun and feisty retelling of Cinderella, full of humour, enthralling storytelling, and with plenty of Christmas sparkle thrown in. With live music, stunning original costumes, fantastic set designs and a talented cast of actor-musicians, Cinderella is a magical Christmas show for all the family. Drawing her dreams in the hearth-side ashes, with only the kitchen rats for friends, Cinderella wishes for something better than the taunts of her mean step-sisters. When she hears about the kingdom’s most fabulous ball she’s determined to strut her stuff on the dance floor, but can she escape her pot-washing prison to attend the party of the year? A Derby Theatre & Octagon Theatre Bolton Production

Look Back in Anger Friday 4 – Saturday 26 March

60 years since this play smashed onto the scene and changed the face of British Theatre, we bring this searing drama to Derby. Expect sizzling passions, dark humour and intriguing plot twists. It’s 1956 and in a cramped flat in Derby, Jimmy Porter is angry. His upper-class wife Alison is the perfect target for his anger whilst his flatmate Cliff is the perfect sounding board. An unwanted pregnancy and the arrival of a glamourous actress take the couple into a love triangle which questions the very foundations of how they live. The play was famously brought to life on film by Richard Burton, Mary Ure and Claire Bloom. Our production offers a stellar cast of some of the most exciting actors now performing in theatre. The writer, John Osborne, worked as an actor and Stage Manager at Derby Playhouse, just a year before he wrote this seminal piece. He set this play in a large East Midlands town and his autobiography suggests some alarming similarities with his own life, just before he burst onto the scene and set the course for the Royal Court to become the home of new writing. Jinny Monday 7 – wednesday 23 March

Jinny and her childhood friend, Liv, are 25 and going nowhere. Unless being evicted is a destination. Jinny is all the things she 'should' be: strong, outspoken and armed with a degree, but it turns out that isn't enough. When everyone is promised everything, what happens when there's not enough to go around? Inspired by John Osborne's iconic Look Back In Anger, Jinny puts Derby's women centre stage as the 'angry young men' become today's angry young women. RETOLD is a series of newly commissioned plays from Derby Theatre, aiming to crack open classic tales and tell the story afresh from the perspective of female characters. post-show Discussion for Look Back in Anger and Jinny after Thu 24 March, 7.45pm performance of Look Back in Anger

Terence rattigan’s

Flare path Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 April

epic wartime romance, this major revival comes from the producers behind the hit touring production of Birdsong. Set in 1942, against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews and their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. RAF pilot Teddy and his wife, former actress Patricia, have their marriage tested to the limit by the surprise arrival of her ex-lover Peter Kyle. Highly charged drama with a truly authentic taste of the fear, camaraderie and passion combine when an unexpected and dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies.

The Elves and the Shoemakers Tuesday 8 – Saturday 26 December 2015 A tale of magic and mischief perfect for ages 3 – 7 and their families & friends Once upon a time, there were two shoemakers who were very old and very poor. So poor they couldn’t even afford to buy each other Christmas presents. With no wood for the fire, and only one piece of leather left to make shoes, there was little festive cheer in the shoemakers’ shop on Christmas Eve. But that night, as the snow began to drift down outside and the clock struck midnight, two little elves mysteriously appeared on the workbench… Live music, physical storytelling and plenty of elf magic come together to tell this classic tale.

A new play about porn, parenting and pressure. A personal response to the extraordinary national media storm that followed when the writer dared to blog about her 11-year-old son stumbling across hardcore online pornography. Combining live performance with animation and an original score, the play explores the complexities of our relationship with online pornography, the dangers and redemptive qualities of the internet, the power of the media and the contradictory nature of our feelings about sex, censorship and parenthood.

In the grand tradition of literary terrorism, Hannah has ripped up her copy of Fifty Shades of Grey and now, surrounded by the crumpled pages and with the help of radical punk-pirate Kathy Acker, she attempts to put the female body back together. Join them on a journey through texts and voices pregnant with pain and pleasure, mothers and babies, domination and submission. University of Derby

An exciting theatrical double bill from University of Derby Theatre Arts and Technical Theatre students Friday 5 & Saturday 6 February

DnA by Dennis Kelly

"If you go now and say nothing to no one about this, you won’t be in trouble." How far will you go to keep in with your friends? A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, where's the incentive to put things right? DNA is a poignant and, sometimes, hilarious tale with a dark heart about peer pressure, bullying, relationships and how some actions stay with us forever.

The Hour we Knew nothing of Each Other by peter Handke

Have you ever sat at a café and watched the world go by? Do you make up stories about passing strangers and attribute significance to their actions? Peter Handke does just this in The Hour Before We Knew Nothing of Each Other, a play with 450 characters and no words based on selected observations of a town square. Narratives begin and dissolve, characters appear and for a moment engage the audience in the minutiae of their lives before they are gone, in this visual explosion of physical theatre. poetry By Heart wednesday 24 February, 7.30pm A treat for anyone interested in poetry! Pupils from across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire will compete at this event, each challenged to memorise and recite two poems chosen from the timeline anthology of over 600 years of poetry on the Poetry by Heart website. They will be judged by a panel including Henderson Mullin (CEO, Writing East Midlands), and poets Helen Mort and Wayne Burrows, with the winner going on to represent their county at the national competition in Cambridge in March. Supporting your theatre

Supporting your theatre Derby Theatre is a registered charity working to produce and support the very best in theatre-making in the Midlands for audiences and artists. We provide an inspiring programme of opportunities for children and communities to engage with culture, whether for fun or as part of their education, and also support local people developing careers in the arts. We are mostly funded through our ticket sales and grants from our funders. This money allows us to do excellent work, but, like most charities, we also need to generate much-needed public support in order to work with all the people, young and old, who can benefit from the theatre’s activities.

If you would like to support Derby Theatre you can do this in a number of different ways: • Donate to our Plus One scheme for looked-after children.

• Leave a legacy to ensure our schools and community programme continues to thrive. • Your company could sponsor a Derby Theatre production. • Gift Aid donations when purchasing your tickets or text donations on the number to the right.

plus One Major arts and cultural organisations in Derby have joined forces with Barnardo’s, Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council to give children in care the chance to experience live performance, film and workshops in the city. So far, customers have generously donated in excess of £22,500 to Plus One (including one single donation of £500 from one generous customer), across all the venues, and we have provided over 1,000 opportunities to children in care, their carers and care leavers to enjoy the arts in Derby. At Derby Theatre itself, young people involved in the scheme have made over 600 visits to the Theatre all supported by our staff and Barnardo’s. We are having a renewed push on the scheme over Christmas and hope that people will give generously so that more children can enjoy the wide range of arts activity in Derby.

“I have done things that I never thought I’d be able to do, like get up on stage and tell a room full of adults all about me. It’s made me feel confident.” Jaydon (Care Leaver).

If you want to contribute, enquire at Box Office when booking tickets for either Derby Theatre, Déda or QUAD or visit our website: derbytheatre.co.uk/plus-one

PS Post-show discussion

what is a preview performance? Preview performances are a fantastic opportunity to see a public performance in its early stages. The creative team are still in the process of applying final touches to the production and the great ticket price for these performances reflects this.
