huRRY, huRRY, huRRY hOLLY hOGaN, bEfORE ThE ROaD DiSaPPEaRS uNDER YOuR fEET. It’s Holly’s birthday and she’s going on a road trip to find her mum. Head-strong and street-smart, she boldly sets out as her glamourous blonde alter ego Solace. So begins a bittersweet, and sometimes hilarious, journey as Solace swaggers and Holly tiptoes across England and through memories, discovering her true self, and unlocking the secrets of her past. Leaving her foster home behind, Solace’s sharp talk helps her navigate a host of curious characters on this road trip which turns out to be more about finding herself than looking for answers. Olivier award-winning writer Mike Kenny adapts Siobhan Dowd’s Carnegie award-winning novel. Alive with the passions and frustrations of growing up, this witty and touching play will inspire anyone who is, or ever has been, a teenager. There are currently over 70,000 children in care in the UK and this vital new piece of work from Derby Theatre uses humour, imagination and courage to tell just one of these stories.

At 11.44pm on the night of the raid, a single bomb reduced the Marples Hotel from seven storeys to just fifteen feet of rubble. The year is 1974, the sleepy town is Hemlock-UnderLye and when werewolf attacks threaten teatime, there’s only one person you can call. Having splattered the UK with critically-acclaimed comedy The Boy Who Kicked Pigs, Kill the Beast returns with a new tale of supernatural slaughter combining beautiful visuals, original music and quite an important pigeon.
Space is not the final frontier. It’s the end of a long week for financial adviser Ray, and as he steps out of the winter rain into the dingy little vacuum repair shop, he has few expectations of his new ‘client’. But the enigmatic Mr Ashburner turns out to be a man of untold wealth. As the night progresses Ray is drawn into Ashburner’s twilight world and the fabric of his own fragile life begins to unravel. This dark, comic thriller leapfrogs over time and space as secret histories are revealed, a surprising relationship is forged and a terrible journey taken.

dERbY THEATRE A LEARNING THEATRE …for the 21st Century Our partnership with the University of Derby means Derby Theatre is a unique venue leading the way as a ‘Learning Theatre’ offering a resource for training, mentorship and artistic excellence. The academic team works alongside the Theatre team and students from across the College of Arts, studying Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre, Film Production, Production Design, Music and Dance, to offer a truly unique learning experience. Students study, work and perform in a nationally renowned producing theatre, and learn by working alongside professionals on top-quality performances. Performing Arts students gain experience, which enables them to form their own theatre companies and pursue professional roles, emerging as new talent, mentored by Derby Theatre and the academic team. This joint endeavour also enables students to take part in workshops with visiting artists of world class. For example, our recent workshops and residencies have provided students with skills and experiences working with Gecko, Headlong and Pilot as well as taking a role alongside our artistic and technical teams on home-grown Derby Theatre productions with our Company Aside scheme. Once students have trained we support them entering the first stages of a professional theatre career through graduate internships and a comprehensive artist development programme. Performing Arts at Derby has never been more exciting.

SUPPORTING YOUR THEATRE Derby Theatre is a registered charity producing and supporting the very best in theatre-making in the Midlands for audiences and artists. We provide an inspiring programme of opportunities for children and communities to engage with culture, whether for fun or as part of their education. We also support local people to develop careers in the arts. We are mostly funded through our ticket sales and grants from our funders. This money allows us to do excellent work, but like most charities we also need to generate much needed public support in order to work with all the people, young and old, who can benefit from the Theatre’s activities.
If you would like to support Derby Theatre you can do this in a number of different ways:
• Donate to our Plus One scheme for looked after children – see below.
• Leave a legacy to ensure our schools and community programme continues to thrive. • Your company could sponsor the great activity our Learning Department delivers all year round.

PLUS ONE Major arts and cultural organisations in Derby have joined forces with Barnardo’s, Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council to give children in care the chance to experience live performance, film and workshops in the city. So far, customers have generously donated £12,500 to Plus One, across all the venues, and we have provided tickets and creative workshops for 773 children, their carers and young care leavers to enjoy the arts in Derby. At Derby Theatre itself, young people involved in the scheme have made 432 visits to the Theatre all supported by our staff and Barnardo’s. We are having a renewed push on the scheme over Christmas and hope that people will give generously so that more children can enjoy the wide range of arts activity in Derby. “I have done things that I never thought I’d be able to do, like get up on stage and tell a room full of adults all about me. It’s made me feel right confident.” Jaydon (Care Leaver).
