Acclaimed playwright, Roy Williams (Kingston 14, Sucker Punch), takes Sophocles' play and by placing it into a contemporary setting brings Thebes into the 21st Century, reinforcing this tale’s relevance and vitality. This is a timeless story about loyalty and truth, human nature and human behaviour. It is a story about what happens when one person stands up against the rules. About how we make meaning out of life and death and what, in the end, really matters.

yOu CAN’T THINk ALL yOur mEmOrIES AT ONCE Or yOur HEAD WILL BurST, SO yOu PuT THEm IN A DrAWEr AND CLOSE THEm AWAy. It’s Holly’s birthday and she’s going on a road trip to find her mum. Headstrong and street-smart, she boldly sets out as her glamourous blonde alter ego, Solace. So begins a bittersweet, and sometimes hilarious journey as Solace swaggers and Holly tiptoes across England. Leaving her foster home behind, Solace’s sharp talk helps her navigate a host of curious characters on this road trip which turns out to be more about finding herself than looking for answers. Alive with the passions and frustrations of growing up, this witty and touching play will inspire anyone who is, or ever has been, a teenager.
Derby Theatre is embarking on an ambitious learning programme with this production in partnership with Derbyshire County Council involving schools, teachers and young people with experiences of care.

Nominated for two Off West End Theatre Awards and nominated for The Brighton Fringe Pick of Edinburgh Award, The Little Soldiers is an astonishing concert performance of dance-and-mime theatre. Amidst the wonders of the circus, an impossible dream appears and two brothers fight over a beautiful tightrope walker. As she leads them above and below themselves into other imagined lands, their desire slowly turns to obsession. A furious ambition takes hold. Theatre Re is an international ensemble creating direct, vibrant, emotional work on the edge of mime and theatre.
Inspired by the iconic David Lynch film and following a critically acclaimed launch at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, elephant man returns with the true story of the fabled Joseph Merrick in a production that is ‘profoundly unforgettable’, ‘uplifting’, and ‘beautiful’. Abandoned as a child, the horribly deformed Joseph, played with “startling subtlety” by Daniel Chrisostomou, survives as a freak-show attraction and medical marvel. But as he sits silently under the stares of London’s high society, it is the world around him that appears grotesque.

Selina invites you to her own version of a midnight feast: somewhere between the confessions made over coffee at Weight Watchers, and sloppy drunken storytelling over a 3am kebab. She infuses discussion of complex, lifelong issues with weight with laughter, popping balloons and a healthy dose of rice pudding to result in something truly vibrant. Sitting somewhere between storytelling, stand-up, live art and theatre, Chewing the Fat is a powerful and extremely open portrayal of how we live with our bodies, on both the days when they are beautiful, and the days when they are a burden.

If you would like to support Derby Theatre you can do this in a number of different ways:
in mEmORiAm GiVinG One of our most recent projects was a direct result of a generous personal donation from Derbyshire resident, Doreen Weaver. The Brian Weaver Fellowship, in memory of her late
husband Brian, was set up as a legacy for Brian and his love of theatre. It provides an aspiring young actor with the opportunity of professional paid work and career guidance with Derby Theatre. The Fellowship was awarded to Adam Horvath, from Derby, who after appearing in The Odyssey here has since successfully auditioned for a national tour with Nottingham Playhouse. Doreen Weaver said: “I am so pleased that I decided to approach Derby Theatre with this dream project in memory of my beloved husband.”
mAKinG A DiFFEREnCE If you’d like to find out more about the impact you can make, in the way that Doreen Weaver has, or indeed in any other way then please contact our Business Development Manager, Andrew McIntyre: a.mcintyre@derby.ac.uk or 01332 593974

Derby Theatre has a long and rich history of delivering high quality drama to audiences. Previously Derby Playhouse, our unique new partnership with the University of Derby and Arts Council England, now means Derby Theatre has transformed from a traditional producing house to an organisation of training, mentorship and artistic excellence. Led by Artistic Director Sarah Brigham and General Manager Gary Johnson, Derby Theatre is bringing together creative professionals and audiences to tell compelling stories and take artistic risks as we emerge as a vibrant, thriving theatre. We combine this professional programme with an exciting suite of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and an emerging talent programme aimed at developing the next generation of artists. Meanwhile our community engagement programme reaches out across our region including people of all ages and from all backgrounds in our unique offer.
“A generous hearted enjoyable night out and the spirits rise to see Derby Theatre packed, bursting at the seams with laughter and full of real ambition” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian Derby Theatre is part of
