The younger version of myself would be disappointed to learn how much I enjoy the cooler weather. With that being said, she would also be blown away to see what Chickasha has grown to be. Our community continues to grow and people are taking notice even from outside Chickasha city limits. I love hearing from old Chickasha High School classmates who have returned and are excited to see where we are now.
If you are new here, Oh18 is built on promoting all things local. Chickasha's popular Shop Local campaign "Buy Chickasha" is back! To help you find the perfect gift we have put together this holiday's Must-Haves. If you haven't participated before, I urge you to get out there shop local and enter to win some great prizes!
Moving into the holiday season, you are invited to join us in celebrating the 30th year of Festival of Light! This tradition has something for all ages to enjoy. Most importantly, it's a great opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones.

Christmas Reveal at
Saturday, November 19th, from 6-8 P.M.,
Candyland
Giving experiences allows your recipient to enjoy the gift more than once! When they open an experience, it’s usually a surprise to find an experience rather than an item. And, when they cash in their gift, they get to experience the joy all over again. Plus, when they look back, there are memories to hold tight to for years and years.
Getting out and creating lasting memories means spending quality time with others. Whether it be a significant other, best friend or large group, you are forming bonds which make lasting relationships more special.
Rather than giving an item which may get pushed to the side, get used up or worst of all, regifted, experiences are generally very special in nature creating more happiness and it doesn’t hurt that they are more valuable than knickknacks which may not even be kept!
When someone opens a gift and expects to find an object, but instead find a fun experience, they tend to be happier with their gift. These gifts are unique because you are thinking of what a person might enjoy doing rather than enjoy looking at.
It’s the most wonderful time of year again! Christmas is our favorite time of year, but sometimes it’s hard to find the perfect gift to give to those you love. We have a great solution though. This year, try giving experiences rather than things! You’ll be surprised at how much they are welcomed. We have come up with seven great reasons to go with an experience this Christmas!
We know it’s a little redundant, but this is the best part! Experiences mean quality time and fun which in turn creates the best memories to reflect on for years. They truly are the gift that keeps on giving.
Sometimes giving an experience is just the ticket when you have a tough person to shop for - you know the one! It’s easier to purchase an experience you know they’ll enjoy rather than an item they may or may not already have or like!
Many times a gift of experience means a completely new experience which in turn could be the spark which completely changes someones hobbies, career path or excitement for life. You never know how much one gift could really give.
So whoever you have on your list this season, rethink the things and consider purchasing an experience instead.
WE KNOW IT WON’T DISAPPOINT!
What's better than the perfect outfit for holiday occasions? Giving the perfect outfit as a gift! And, the best news is you can find it all right here in Chickasha. Thirty years ago Eddie Binyon had this little idea to share the spirit of Christmas with his community. The idea behind the Festival of Light was inspired behind his experiences of Christmas as a child and the joy he witnessed his mother had when giving. He formed a small group made up of Chickasha citizens and started a nonprofit in 1992. Along with fundraising and a generous donation from the Binyon Family, the Festival of Light was able to make its Grand Opening in 1993.
Eddie, himself, never thought he would be the type of person to be a dreamer, but this little dream has since grown into a nationally recognized light display known as the Festival of Light. Every year volunteers transform the 43 acre park at Shannon Springs into
Bridge 1993 Prepping the bridge for the first tunnel of lights
Carriage Ride
Guests can enjoy a horsedrawn carriage ride through the lights

a beautiful interactive light display with over 3.5 million lights.
The success of the Festival of Light can easily be attributed to the community of Chickasha. From the beginning when meetings were standing room only to today where hundreds of citizens volunteer their time to ensure the Festival of Light is up and running, it's evident how the Festival of Light is held close to our hearts. This sense of community has been steadfast through the last 30 years to make the Festival of Light a place for everyone to enjoy.
Over these thirty years, the Festival has become one of the top ten holiday light shows in the nation bringing in over 250,000 visitors. Not only can you view this spectacle by driving through or taking a horse-drawn
carriage ride, you can also take a stroll through the lights. If you are a thrill seeker, a local group of pilots at Chickasha Wings offers flyovers! With each passing year, the Festival of Light seems to only get bigger and better. This nonprofit is completely run by volunteers and a small Board of Directors. Everyone you see as you drive through is a volunteer and each light display is sponsored by a local business in Chickasha. It’s safe to say the civic pride the founders were looking to spark became a flame which has burned brightly now for thirty years!
Over time, Festival of Light has had its fair share of trials. If you have been in Oklahoma you know winter brings ice storms. Although damage to the trees and lights can be significant, they persevere and come out stronger on the other side.
What began as a simple show of lights now boasts a gift shop, ice skating, food trucks, hot cocoa and fair rides such as a Ferris wheel and carousel. And, let's not forget the beautiful 172-ft Christmas tree which can be seen all across town and the computer animated light show synchronized to holiday music!
The most recent attraction added is “Downtown at the Depot,” located at the Rock Island Depot in downtown Chickasha. Santa tends to make his appearance here to visit the children of the community. In addition to pop up shops and other holiday festivities, Downtown at the Depot offers a shuttle service to the Festival of Light which allows you to experience everything on foot without having to search for parking!
Along with promoting goodwill, civic pride and community the Festival focuses on the one true Light of Christmas. Their mission statement is founded on viewing Christmas through the eyes of a child. This
is why it's so important the Festival of Light remain a free event open to all - so everyone can experience the magic and spirit of Christmas.
FOL wouldn’t be here today without all the amazing volunteers. Whether you have volunteered once or every year, THANK YOU for being a part of something so magical. Want to sign up? Visit chickashafestivaloflight.org/volunteer

Add 1 1/2 cups flour, salt, & sugar to a food processor. Pulse 2-3 times. Scatter butter cubes over flour & process until a dough begins to form, there should be no uncoated flour.
Scrape bowl, redistribute the mixture then add remaining 1 cup of flour. Pulse 4-5 times, dough should look broken up & crumbly. Transfer to a med bowl, sprinkle ice water over mixture- start with 4 tbsp add from there. Using rubber spatula press dough into itself. Crumbs should form larger clusters. When you pinch the dough and it holds together it is ready. Add 2-4 tbsp of water and continue until dough holds together.
Step 3
Remove from bowl and work dough enough to form a ball. Cut the ball in half and form each halves into discs. Wrap each disc with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1hr up to 2 days. When ready fit crust to pie pan.

The Salvation Army is a widely known ministry driven by God's love. Their goal is to preach the Word of God, while meeting people's needs - without discrimination. One of their most well-known campaigns, also the oldest annual charitable fundraiser in the United States, is the Red Kettle Campaign. It's held around Christmas to provide resources for people in need such as toys, food and clothing. Working in conjunction with the Red Kettle Campaign is the Angel Tree Program which provides Christmas assistance for low income families with children. Salvation Army also provides a quick response by mobilizing officers, employees and volunteers in areas where disaster strikes.
If you are interested in getting involved or donating, visit The Salvation Army of Grady & Caddo County's FaceBook or call 405-224-5647.
