CE Courses – Thursday 9/15/22 Course Code: T10

Course Code: T11

LOCAL ANESTHETICS, VASOCONSTRICTORS AND CLINICAL DENTAL CONSIDERATIONS Tom Viola, R.Ph., CCP 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

THE PEDIATRIC ENDODONTIC PATIENT: BEING PROACTIVE USING INNOVATIVE AND CONSERVATIVE PULPAL THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES AFTER TRAUMA AND GROSS CARIES Najia Usman, DDS 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants, Office Manager, Front Office Staff Management of odontogenic pain may be accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates intraoperative local anesthesia. However, improper and inappropriate use of local anesthetic agents has the potential to produce life-threatening, systemic adverse reactions. Thus, a thorough knowledge of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents is essential for their safe and effective use. This program will provide participants with an overview of local anesthetic agents commonly used in dental practice. Special emphasis will be given to developing strategies and techniques essential to accurately identify the need for pain control, individualize patient care, and assess the efficacy of the local anesthetic agents administered. Learning objectives: • Explain the basic mechanism of action of local anesthetic agents. • Differentiate between the two major classes of local anesthetic agents with respect to their distribution, metabolism, adverse effects, drug interactions and contraindications. • Specify the various local anesthetic agent combinations most commonly used in dentistry and the rationale for their use in specific clinical situations.

CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants The pediatric endodontic patient poses a challenge both in patient management and the status of root development. Dr. Usman has a philosophy of proactive treatment versus "waiting and watching" which will minimize untoward sequelae such as infection and discoloration of the tooth as well as facilitate an optimum and conservative, long-term restorative solution. Starting with a thorough understanding of diagnosis and the role of frequent recall, she will demonstrate the management of various patients who have undergone trauma or have gross caries which threaten the premature loss of the permanent tooth. A review of diagnosis and the various spectrum of pupal therapeutic techniques from apexogenesis to indirect pulp capping, modified apexification, and regenerative treatments. The clinical uses of various materials such as MTA, Endosequence bioceramics, Biodentine calcium silicate cement and collagen containing materials which have been demonstrated to have applications, will be compared. AN UPDATE ON DENTAL CERAMICS Nate Lawson, DMD, PhD 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants 90% of crowns and bridges are now fabricated from a ceramic material, according to a report from one of the largest US dental laboratories. Ceramic materials do not handle the same as metal-based restorations and improper selection or handling can lead to premature failure. This course will teach you how to select and handle different types of ceramic materials that are currently used in dentistry that will be much less confusing than typical marketing rhetoric. The ability to bond these dental ceramics allows the practitioner to perform more conservative tooth preparations. As there are many different types of dental ceramics available (zirconia, lithium disilicate, porcelain, processed composite, etc.), determining the correct protocol for each type of ceramic can be confusing. This lecture aims to simplify the process of bonding ceramics and provide the clinician with a protocol that can be used to bond any type of dental ceramic. In this course, we will review the best clinical practices based on research studies

BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO YOUR RESTORATIONS: INCORPORATING MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES AND BIOACTIVE MATERIALS INTO YOUR PRACTICE

CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants Minimally invasive techniques using bioactive materials can help make teeth last a lifetime. With the changing demographics of our population, it is important to use age-appropriate restorative materials. Xerostomia is a problem for patients taking multiple medications and results in demineralization of tooth structure. Bioactive materials help replenish calcium and fluoride ions restoring tooth integrity. Glass Ionomer restorative materials can serve as a therapeutic restorative material, reducing post-operative sensitivity and potential recurrent decay. Calcium releasing liners and bases provide a strong antibacterial effect, assist in dentin remineralization, and act as a protective barrier. Universal bonding agents simplify the bonding process and allow the dentist to use their preferred etching method. Composites with optimized nano-filler particles decrease wear, polymerization shrinkage stress and optimize optical qualities. Predictable class II restorations require specific skills and techniques to achieve reliable success. This course is an excellent way to improve your skills using advanced restorative materials. Learning objectives: • Utilize innovative new calcium releasing liners and bases. • Embrace bioactive restorative materials. • Select appropriate “Universal” bonding agents.

CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants Support provided by Kerr An essential component of the diagnostic puzzle in endodontics is radiology. 2D radiographs have been helpful to aid in diagnosis and planning. However, teeth, like the human body, are 3 dimensional and limitations with 2D radiology exist. Ultimately, the use of 3D imaging / CBCT in endodontics is about avoiding surprises, assessing prognosis, and having the information to treatment plan cases most effectively for long-term restorative success. Studies have shown that endodontists change their treatment plan approximately 60% of the time when using 3D imaging vs. 2D imaging. Case presentations of 2D images along with CBCT scans (identifying significant splits/branches on canals that can be misinterpreted on 2D, assessing the number, shape and location of canals) to review & understand endodontic findings on 3D imaging as well as sharing treatment plan modifications based on the 3D information so as to minimize incomplete endos (CDT3332) i.e., entering and finding a crack/perforation, will be shared. 3D imaging also provides another diagnostic modality for more challenging patients (gaggers, special needs, etc.) and is a vehicle that can provide better patient communication by reviewing the scan with the asymptomatic patient.

A workshop accompanies this course; see Course Code T19.

Learning objectives • Understand how CBCT is a useful adjunct in addition to 2D radiology. • Understand how to convey the importance of CBCT to patients. • Understand how to review and analyze limited field of view 3D scans for endodontic applications.

Dr. Shelburne went to prison on August 20, 2008 and was released on May 14, 2010. He learned a series of lessons the hard way. There are ways to protect and defend a dental practice and to prevent what happened to him from happening to you. Know that if it’s not in your clinical record, you didn’t see it, you didn’t say it, you didn’t do it, it didn’t need to be done, and it doesn’t exist – from the legal perspective. To be prepared for any challenge the whole dental team must be careful, concise, complete, and diligent, not just the doctor; the whole team is potentially at risk. Learning and implementing this

PERI-IMPLANTITIS: A CHRONIC, NON-HEALING WOUND Purnima Kumar, DDS 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O- $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants Dental implants replace missing teeth in at least 100 million people, yet over one million implants fail every year due to peri-implantitis, a bacterially induced inflammatory disease. Our ability to treat peri-implantitis is hampered by a paucity of information on host-microbiome interactions that underlie the disease. By characterizing molecular events at the mucosal-microbial interface in the peri-implant crevice, we discovered an active peri-implant microbiome surrounding healthy implants. Microbial genes regulate human genes encoding cell development, metabolism, morphogenesis, adhesion, gap junctions, cell-cell signaling and immunoinflammatory pathways, suggesting a role for commensals in protecting epithelial integrity. In disease, we discovered that microbial dysbiosis in the peri-implant sulcus promotes abandonment of hostbacterial transactions that dictate health and instead drives a move towards chronic programming of a non-healing wound. Learning objectives: • Understand host-microbiome interactions. • Identify peri-implantitis as a source of implant failures. • Understand the role of commensals in protecting epithelial integrity.

MANEUVERING THE DENTAL MINEFIELD Roy Shelburne, DDS 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format: A-1, Category B-3 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants, Office Manager, Front Office Staff When the practice is paid rapidly and appropriately, things are good; however, when there are delays, denials, and requests for additional information, things are not quite so good. Mistakes can be devastating to the practice. During the investigation as well as in the preparation for and during Dr. Shelbourne’s trial it became apparent that the practice’s billing and coding systems were faulty. Dr. Shelburne now educates others so that they can bill and code appropriately. His message is that it is possible to implement systems that can form a proactive defensive systemic approach that will result in maximum legitimate reimbursement. To be prepared for this challenge the team must be careful, concise, complete, and diligent. Learning and implementing this approach will result in higher reimbursement while reducing the risk associated with the coding piece of the practice. If the deficiencies in your systems are ignored both doctor and staff are at risk. Learning objectives: • To recognize the dangers in coding improperly and benefits of coding properly. • To know the most misused codes and how to avoid the usual errors. • To be able to develop systems that result in timely payment. OROFACIAL PAIN: RELIEF FOR THE GENERAL PRACTITIONER Kevin D. Huff, DDS, MAGD, DABOP 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. CE Hours: 3 OSDB Format A-1, Category B-1 Fee: M - $90; NMD - $155; S/O - $71 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants, Office Managers, Front Office Staff Orofacial Pain (OFP) is the ADArecognized specialty of dentistry that encompasses the diagnosis, management and treatment of pain disorders of the jaw, mouth, face and associated regions that typically fall in the nebulous

zone between dentistry and medicine. Unfortunately, more than two out of ten people suffer from at least one of six types of orofacial pain, and approximately 12 million adults in the United States have pain related to temporomandibular disorders that are inadequately managed by conventional dental therapeutic approaches. An individual may have more than one form of TMJ disorders and may also have overlapping conditions, such as migraines, fibromyalgia, and other forms of widespread pain. Orofacial pain has varying causes (injury, genetics, and environmental factors), and may affect various body systems. Orofacial pain has a substantial impact on the quality of life for those affected, and effective care often involves multiple disciplines within medicine and dentistry that requires specialty knowledge. Many, if not most, general practitioners and even other dental specialists are unaware of the valuable resources that an Orofacial

Pain Specialist can provide to them and their patients. The primary goal of this course is to provide an easy-tocomprehend overview of orofacial pain conditions that commonly present in the general dental office daily. Each of seven main areas within the field of orofacial pain will be reviewed and illustrated with real-life examples. Of course, temporomandibular disorders and an evidence-based approach to effective management will be discussed. Learning objectives: • Identify the seven areas within the field of orofacial pain. • Identify evidence-based strategies for managing common orofacial pain conditions. • Make an informed decision about appropriate case selection for primary care management of orofacial pain versus when to refer to an orofacial pain specialist.

OSDB Format: A-2c, Category B-1 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants, Office Managers, Front Office Staff When faced with fractured or brokendown teeth or dentition, often the choices are limited to crowns or extraction and replacement with implants, fixed bridges, or removable partial dentures. Limited finances, an aging population and the improvement of direct esthetic bonded composite expand treatment options. During this course, you will learn how to do routine Class 2 posterior composites, direct composite veneers, post and cores with the core serving as a direct interim crown, direct bonded bridges, and salvage severely fractured teeth with composite. Complex onlays can often replace crowns when a patient fractures one or more cusps. These techniques will help you solve challenges you will encounter on a daily basis in your private practice. Clinical cases will demonstrate the versatility of well-done composite restorations, giving the esthetics and durability of porcelain with the advantage of simple repair and lower cost. Learning Objectives: • Understand how to save fractured teeth with composite. • Discover how to solve challenges compacted by limited available finances or an aging population. • Determine how improvements of direct esthetic bonded composite expand treatment options in your practice. Course Code: O83

WHERE DO POST, CORES, AND FULL COVERAGE CROWNS FIT IN TODAY’S AGE OF ADHESIVE DENTISTRY AND THE ETT? J. C. Resnick, DDS CE Hours: 2 OSDB Format: A-2c, Category B-1 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants The advances in dental adhesive technology have impacted the methods used in restoring the endodontically treated tooth (ETT). For decades, clinicians have relied on the conventional plan of placing a core, retained by pins and/or posts, to serve for the preparation and placement of a full coverage crown.

Research has proven that the loss of dentin is the major factor contributing to the failure of the ETT. If a tooth can be restored without the necessity of using posts, cores, and crowns, wouldn't that influence how we would proceed with treatment? Today, with modern adhesive techniques, we have the ability of restoring ETT without sacrificing dentin to create post spaces nor requiring removal of healthy enamel and dentin for a full coverage restoration. Learning Objectives: • Review the advances of adhesive technology. • Discover new techniques to restore the ETT. • Review research on the topic of endodontically treated teeth. Course Code O84

DENTAL NACHOS PRESENTS: THE LIFE CHANGING IMPACT OF DENTAL IMPLANTS Paul Goodman, DMD CE Hours: 1 OSDB Format: A-2c, Category B-1 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants, Office Managers, Front Office Staff Restorative practices see at least one patient with a missing tooth every day. Implant dentistry provides an opportunity to offer patients increased self-esteem, enhanced chewing capabilities and optimal treatment while boosting practice revenue. Help patients see the value in implants and say “Yes!” to reach your practice’s full implant potential. During this presentation the viewers will learn how to present and place full arch implant cases. Learning Objectives: • Learn effective consultation techniques that can increase case acceptance. • Identify restorative techniques to decrease dentist stress and improve patient outcomes. • Review the major differences between fixed and removable implant cases. Course Code O85

CE Hours: 1 OSDB Format: A-2c, Category B-3 Recommended Audience: Dentists, Hygienists, EFDAs, Assistants, Office Managers, Front Office Staff In this course, we bring it all together at where it starts and ends, huddles. Dr. Safavian will introduce skills to introduce to team members to support a flourishing, happy and efficient practice. We will leave you with resources to better lead your team starting with your next huddle. This 1-hour course discusses and elaborates on the most important practice management skills that “we did not learn in school” and how they are manifested in team huddles. Great teamwork starts with a great huddle and ends with a great huddle. Each dentist and dental team member must be able to work in harmony and efficiently along with others in a team, and an efficient huddle can glue it all together. New dentists, owner dentists, hygienists and dental team members are introduced to what works the best and what to avoid in huddles, how to set it up, run it and monitor it for the best results. A great huddle can not only be a coordination time for the team but also a great time for learning, self-improvement and avoiding unnecessary conflicts, leading to a happy team that great team members want to be part of. Nowadays, with a shortage in workforce human resources, an effective huddle is arguably the simplest and yet the most effective step one can take that, when done right, leads to increased organization, team happiness and team retention. Learning Objectives: • Understand what an effective huddle is and how to achieve it. • Understand current practice management issues affecting routines at the dental office such as insurance, staffing, conflict resolution, customer service, leadership, personalities, and communication. • Discover solutions other dentists adopted post-COVID to overcome issues by being creative and knowledgeable.

She completed her dental training at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry in 2000 and shortly after started her practice near Los Angeles, California. While starting a practice in a saturated market came with its own challenges, the practice grew tremendously over the years, expanding to several locations. Because of her experience running multiple practices and leading a big team, Dr. Dorfman developed a unique insight into how efficient practices organize and operate and how dental teams can work together to overcome obstacles and reach their goals. A recognized speaker and author, Dr. Dorfman is regularly invited to teach other dentists

across the country. She has presented at multiple local and national dental meetings, such as the Townie Meeting and Practice on Fire Live. Recently, she’s had the honor to join the faculty at the Dental Success Network, a unique community dedicated to advanced learning and collaboration. Dr. Dorfman is also a frequent contributor to several industry blogs and is the host of Behind the Smiles Podcast which features the most disruptive and influential members of the dental community who are moving dentistry forward. Dr. Dorfman spends numerous hours in continuing education each year to further her dental expertise and is always on the cutting edge of technology. Her passion for creating systems and leveraging technology to streamline practice operations is what eventually led her to cofound YAPI, a paperless dental software company, where she is currently serving as the COO. When she is not working, Dr. Dorfman enjoys hiking, reading, and spending time with her husband Ken, their two children, Mila and Lenny, and their German Shephard named Axel.
