Our Sport Management master’s program will equip you with the managerial competencies you need for a successful career in the dynamic and growing sports industry. Because our curriculum is based on sports business, you’ll acquire an advanced knowledge and analytic base in management that will help you prepare for an executive-level position in sports, whether it’s at the recreational, high school, college or professional level. Graduates are able to: • Effectively apply sport management theory and best practices within a sport organization. • Lead sport organizations ethically, based on Dominican values. • Analyze and critique the scope of sport in society, including how sport is shaped by culture, values and psychosocial experiences. • Critique decision-making in contemporary sport practices based on their personal ethical perspectives and Dominican values. • Synthesize and critique various management and leadership theories and practices as applied to sport systems. • Apply financial management tools and principles of micro and macroeconomics to the sport industry.

Core Courses SPM 510 – Sport Psychology The scope of sport leadership and coaching goes far beyond teaching skills and strategies to athletes. Successful teams are mentally focused on the task at hand, and coaches must be skilled at maximizing athlete performance with an in-depth understanding of the psychology of coaching athletes. This course presents you with the contemporary issues associated with coaching psychology by utilizing various sources and texts. SPM 520 – Sport Sociology and Ethics In this course, you will examine the most significant historical normative ethical theories and moral concerns, and apply them to the context of sport. You also will apply critical thinking skills to critique the culture of sport, particularly as found in America today. This will involve probing into some of the least glamorous elements of sport practices and the problems caused by them. You will be provided with tools and ethical theories to help you understand many of the inconsistencies and hypocrisies of sport at various levels. You will be empowered to think critically, rationally and morally about the goods and evils of sport. SPM 530 – Research Methods and Design in Sport This course focuses on the nature of research design and the methodology of a quantitative research project. You will discuss and study the research process, which includes defining the problem and hypotheses, the various types of research, data collection procedures, and establishing validity and reliability. SPM 610 – Sport Marketing and Consumer Behavior This course is designed to provide you with a broad appreciation of marketing and its function as a vital component of sport management, and provides you with an understanding of marketing concepts as they are currently applied in various sport management contexts. You will be equipped with the skills necessary to perform basic marketing responsibilities, and will be prepared to engage in advanced work in marketing, consumer behavior and related fields. SPM 620 – Organizational Behavior in Sport Systems In this course, you will focus on a conceptual analysis of the management of sport. Management is viewed as the coordination of the production and marketing of the services in the field of sport. The unique service aspects of sport serve as the framework for discussion on the managerial functions of planning, organizing, leading and evaluating.
SPM 630 – Human Resources Management in Sport In this course, you will analyze the management of human resources within sport organizations. The objective of this course is to provide you with a basic understanding of the nature of paid professional workers, volunteer workers, and clients in sport organizations; individual differences in abilities, values, personality and motivation; organizational processes of job design, staffing and performance appraisal; and desired outcomes of job satisfaction and organizational commitment SPM 640 – Sport Law We live in an increasing litigious society in which there has been a dramatic increase in the number of lawsuits filed within courts of law. Sport and physical activity have not been spared from this trend. Future professionals within the realm of sport and physical activity need to be aware of the law and the numerous implications it brings to their chosen fields. In this course, you are introduced to various aspects of the law and its influence on sport and physical activity in order to decrease the probability that future sport managers will be involved in litigation. SPM 650 – Sport Economics and Finance In recent years, traditional sources of revenue, such as tax support, media revenues and gate receipts, have declined while costs have rapidly increased. Managers of sport organizations have had to do more with less. This course is designed to provide you with skills in financial analysis, as well as budgeting techniques, that are essential for tracking an organization’s revenue. SPM 720 – Sport Management Comprehensive Project In this course, you will develop and implement an applied project in sport, under the direction of a member of faculty. SPM 730 – Sport Management Thesis In this course, you will conduct research, analyze data and present a discussion under the direction of a member of faculty.
