The Obama Presidential Library
When Barack Obama gave his famous electoral victory in November 2008 speech about reuniting the nation he choose an auspicious location, the Loop, a place where all Chicagoans, regardless of race or class can meet on equal terms. Growing up in Chicago myself, I always felt a deep divide between the north and south of the city, but the loop was where everyone came together. It seems fitting, then, for the Obama Library to be placed here, where his own presidential journey began. I have chosen to locate the new library within the existing structure of the Chicago Cultural Center as a symbol, both of the President’s personal roots in the city and the notion that a contemporary library should emerge from and be embedded within everyday life. The linked tower form derives from the dual atria of the existing Cultural Center, and is used to highlight the dual nature of the contemporary library as a place for the storage and reading of traditional printed materials and the accessing of digital information. Within each tower a variety of spaces and lighting is provided to accommodate the reading of either printed materials or electronic screens, ranging from private carrels between the book stacks to large, book-lined reading rooms. The structural system of the building exploits the unique capacity of rolled steel in diagonal grids to carry the entire weight of a high rise tower without the need of a massive central core. The rotated forms help to both reduce and resist lateral wind forces, which can be famously extreme on the edge of Lake Michigan.

Cliff House San Francisco
Location: 1090 Point Lobos Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121 Design Duration: 8 Weeks
This extraordinary site is located on the Northwest part of San Francisco. The Cliff house has been a get away for urban dwellers in the 19th century. The current rendition is the 1900 which is a concrete shell and structure due to its notorious fires that have occurred. The studio was to re imagine what could possible re build after another fire. My goal was to use the existing historical 1900 building shell and its current 2004 retaining wall addition for visitors to be able to interact with the old and new. While creating a restaurant and visitor center I wanted people to still have public access to the cliff house giving back to the locals and communities.
