COLOUR SYMBOLISM

The Holy Month is a moment of reflection and colours play an important role during this period. We’ve selected a few hues that are frequently worn during Ramadan and Eid.

Light shades are very popular during this time for their characteristic of not standing out and blending with nature. This Nature Hedonist set in light blue is made of natural materials, which are the perfect textiles for warmer months.

Fashion Picks

According to Muslim scholars, white is the colour that makes everyone equal. These Missoni trousers will help you create a white look from head to toe.

Purple symbolises wealth, wisdom and dignity; it is also associated with twilight, the time Muslims break their fast. This Max Mara Studio top has a loose cut, which is perfect also to embrace the ethos of modest wear.

Yellow is often worn during Eid celebrations, as it represents happiness, remembrance, honour and joy. This Serapian handbag, in this vivid shade, will add a vibrant touch to your Eid looks.

The holiest colour in Islam is, without a doubt, green. You can opt for an entire verdant outfit or choose some green shoes, such as these comfortable slip-ons from Loro Piana. They are a great pick for casual gatherings with family and friends.

Forget minis or midis and add ankle-length skirts to your wardrobe. They suit taller girls best, but they can elongate the silhouette if you opt for straight cuts and darker shades. They come in an array of textiles, from knitted numbers to denim –cover your legs in style!

ULTIMATE ELEGANCE

Despite what many might think, sophistication has nothing to do with sparkle and golden accents. It is mostly about how you compose your looks. A laid-back style requires impeccable cut, high-end textiles and is usually made of neutral shades with some colour accents here and there – a way of standing out because of good taste and refinement rather than flashy colours and skin baring.

We bring exciting news from the world of fashion and velocity. This month, our roundup is all about a new brand to shop in Qatar, exciting collaborations and inspirational collections.

New in Town

Milanese luxury leather goods brand Serapian has arrived in the Middle East. Its first physical retail presence is at the newly opened Printemps Doha. Handcrafted in Italy with a rich heritage of distinctive design, noble leathers and materials, the brand has earned a loyal clientele worldwide. The new Doha location offers the full range of Serapian’s iconic collections for women and its bespoke service, a unique experience for the most discerning customers. Clients can discover the Mosaico craft, the maison’s hallmark invented in 1947 by Stefano Serapian, where strips of precious lamb nappa are delicately handwoven by skilled artisans. Maxime Bohe, Serapian’s CEO, said: “The opening of our exclusive corner in the heart of Doha is a milestone for Serapian. While we have welcomed clients from Qatar and its neighbouring countries for many years in our Milan home, we are delighted to be able to welcome both longstanding and new clients to our first shopping corner in the GCC.”

Ride into the Sunset

If you are a fan of two-wheeled vehicles, this collection is for you! The fashion brand DSquared2 has partnered with motorcycle company Honda to create the Honda X DSquared2 capsule collection as part of its SS2023 men’s creations. Capturing the outlawstyle freedom that comes with riding a motorcycle on a road that stretches for miles, the collaboration brings a biker-wear lineup detailed with Honda’s iconic winged logo. The detail comes in red or white and pairs with stripes that band around sleeves, trousers and baseball caps. One of the items is a hybrid biker-blazer with leather sleeves with printed logos. Other key pieces are a white hooded sweatshirt with a red Honda wing and lettering – also seen in a T-shirt in diverse colours. A white tank top and a slouchy raglan fit black jersey top with leather sleeves completely embellished with the Honda logos and stripes complement the collection.

Middle Eastern Inspired

The Middle East is an important market for many brands and LOEWE has launched its first exclusive Middle East collection. The capsule brings versatile ready-to-wear dayto-night items, bags and accessories crafted in luxurious silks and signature leathers. The clothing collection is composed of eight exclusive pieces and two new editions of the Puzzle Edge bag; the items come in key colours such as lilac, butter yellow and vanilla white from SS2023 runway creations. The exclusive collection includes tunic dresses, pyjama sets cut in silk and nappa leather, a sparkly lurex knitted cardigan and a vest featuring geometric patterns. Available in small and mini sizes, the special edition Puzzle Edge bag is crafted in satin calfskin leather in the exclusive butter shade, perfect for both daytime and evening looks. The accessories add a festive golden highlight with a detachable metal chain inspired by the Middle East. There is a falcon, known in the region as a symbol of strength and courage, and the iconic Arabian Oryx, an antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula.

Activewear Collab

The brand There Was One (TWO) is a joint venture between luxury retail destination Farfetch and New Guards Group, an Italian contemporary luxury fashion production and distribution holding company. This season, TWO has launched its first activewear collection for men and women. Focusing on developing pieces for training and cycling, they are made from high-performance materials with highly functional details, such as reflective piping and mesh inserts for breathability. The line was created with customers’ needs in mind by using data-driven insights on what consumers search for, combining them with fashion-forward thinking. “Since its launch, There Was One has become the brand of choice for a conscious consumer who values quality and longevity from their favourite wardrobe staples,” said Chiara Gatti, Senior Head of Category Management & NGG Digital Brands, Farfetch.

Time and Speed

Cars and watches have an intimate relationship. Following this principle, Aston Martin and Swiss Luxury brand Girard-Perregaux partnered to create the Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition. The timepiece’s design encompasses elements inspired by Aston Martin cars, from powerful engines to sleek contours and lightweight construction. It’s the first Laureato to feature a green ceramic case and bracelet. Aston Martin’s iconic association with the colour green began many decades ago when manufacturers raced in the hues of their country of origin, in this case, British Racing Green. Since then, the brand’s racing cars have competed in various shades of green before resting on the now-familiar Aston Martin Racing Green, which adorns its Formula 1 automobiles. Both companies operate within a world of excellence, where time-honoured skills imbue products with a distinctive character and an enduring quality, creating rare objects that confer lasting appeal. Presented in a 42mm or 38mm model, the new wristwatch is available worldwide in selected Girard-Perregaux retailers.

Your

Redefining Journey

This iconic Italian car manufacturer surprises us with another incredible creation, the Ferrari 296 GTS – bringing a completely new experience to the everyday act of driving.

Ferrari cars cause a head-turning effect wherever they go and the brand’s unique specifications make the vehicles stand out even among the most high-end automobiles.

In terms of engine, the 296 GTS uses the new 654hp 120° V6, coupled with an electric motor capable of delivering a further 122kW (165hp), which debuted on the 296 GTB – making the 296 GTS the first six-cylinder engine installed on a road-going spider, sporting the Prancing Horse badge. This unleashes its class-leading 818hp total power output to deliver previously unthinkable performance levels and an innovative, exhilarating and unique soundtrack.

34 www.ohlalamag.net
OHLALALookbook

The 296 GTS is the first Ferrari road-going spider to sport a V6 turbo with a vee angle of 120° between the cylinder banks (offering more space between them, reducing the unit’s overall size and the distance the air has to cover to arrive in the combustion chamber), coupled with a plug-in electric motor. Presented for the first time in 2021 on the 296 GTB, the V6 has its turbos installed inside the vee. Aside from bringing significant advantages in terms of packaging, lowering the centre of gravity and reducing engine mass, this particular architecture helps deliver high levels of power.

The car’s name combines its total displacement (2992l) and the number of cylinders with the GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) acronym in the finest Ferrari tradition to underscore this new engine’s epoch-changing importance to the brand. It is not simply the living beating heart of the 296 GTS but also ushers in a new V6 era that has its roots deep in Ferrari’s unrivalled 75-year history.

The 296 GTS’ PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system guarantees it is an incredibly usable car having cut pedal response times to zero and delivering a 25km range in all-electric eDrive mode. The hybrid element not only makes the vehicle versatile in terms of day-to-day driving but also improves the driving experience by providing instant and consistent response at all engine speeds.

The 296 GTS bursts into the mid-engined Berlinetta sports car range with several radical and innovative solutions. Its compact dimensions and the introduction of innovative, dynamic control systems and meticulously honed aero, ensure that the driver is instantly impressed by its astonishing agility and responsiveness to commands. Its sporty, curved design and highly compact dimensions also visually underscore its unique and modern forms – the perfect marriage of technology and aesthetics that is the signature of all Ferraris.

The RHT (Retractable Hard Top) assures exceptional comfort. When the top is retracted, the cabin and the rear deck are separated by a height-adjustable glass rear screen, ensuring optimal passenger comfort even at high speeds. With the roof stowed, it features a sleek, sporty design and with the top up, the silhouette remains very similar to that of the 296 GTB. The lightweight RHT takes a mere 14 seconds to retract or deploy at speeds up to 45km/h.

For clients who want to exploit the car’s extreme power and performance to the utmost, particularly on the track, the 296 GTS is also available with the Assetto Fiorano package, which includes lightweight features and aero modifications.

What’s no surprise at all is that Ferrari is the brand behind this innovative car concept without losing sight of what matters most – the thrill of driving a Ferrari.

JOYFUL JEWELS

Chopard is well-known for its Happy Jewellery collections, and there is no one better to represent the brand than the owner of one of the biggest smiles in cinema – Julia Roberts.

44 www.ohlalamag.net JEWELLERY Edit
JULIA ROBERTS IN CHOPARD BTS ©GREG WILLIAMS

Hollywood star Julia Roberts has been the face of Chopard’s Happy Sport and Happy Diamonds collections since 2021, but now she has become the global ambassador of all the maison’s women’s watch and jewellery lines.

To celebrate this special bond, Chopard and Julia Roberts are combining their shared love of cinema through a campaign directed by James Grey comprising 12 video clips. The director has captured all the audacity, playfulness and humanity that make the actress a contemporary icon. The films are accompanied by a new advertising campaign featuring visuals by photographer Alasdair McLellan.

Julia Roberts has one of the most beautiful and famous smiles in cinema and, according to the luxury brand, it embodies everything that makes Chopard unique such as virtuosity, joie de vivre and feel-good spirit. This positive energy spreads like a wave, giving women confidence in themselves. The pieces extend this enjoyment of life, exuding a radiant sparkle. Regarding the films, James Gray captures the famous, generally unseen, backstage glimpses that are an integral part of a movie set in the latest Chopard Loves Cinema campaign. It shows the actress in action, joking around off-camera, spreading her joy and larks. She knits, finds something nice to say about everyone, slips into trainers under her glamorous dresses, takes over the camera herself and interrupts her script rehearsal to cuddle her dog Myrtle, who jumps on her lap.

“After our Happy Diamonds campaign directed by Xavier Dolan in 2021, which featured a mesmerising and twirling Julia Roberts illustrating the pure, immediate and communicative happiness at the heart of Chopard’s spirit, this new series broadens the spectrum of the initial momentum,” says Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director. “We are revealing a new facet of our identity, the feel-good vibe: the self-confidence instilled by Chopard jewellery or watches, reverberating in the air and infusing the entire surrounding universe with positive energy.”

DOUBLE WHITE

Boucheron’s latest collection combines white gold, Hyceram and diamonds into a series of dazzling creations.

46 www.ohlalamag.net

French luxury jewellery and watch house Boucheron has unveiled the Quatre Double White Edition collection, a white-on-white portrayal of the iconic jewellery line that combines monochrome strength with style. Since its creation in 2004, the Quatre collection has drawn on the maison’s heritage to capture its essence and become the contemporary Boucheron signature.

This season, the latest Quatre collection features the Grosgrain and Double Godron that are sculpted exquisitely in white gold (18-carat) while the Clou de Paris in pristine Hyceram sits alongside the line of diamonds creating an intricate and unique design. The collection encompasses rings, hoop earrings, necklaces and a daring piece of hair jewellery as the flagship item.

ADORNING FINGERS

The Quatre Wedding Band Double White Edition is a stylish wedding ring in a white gold Godron combined with the Clou de Paris and sculpted in white Hyceram.

The Quatre Double White Edition large ring is Boucheron’s iconic Quatre ring that never stops reinventing itself. The white gold of the double Godron and Grosgrain meets the immaculate Clou de Paris designed in Hyceram, along with a line of diamonds creating an alluring aesthetic.

The collection also includes two Quatre Double White Edition small rings that adhere to the codes of this collection in a monochrome of white gold and Hyceram, of which one of them delightfully integrates diamonds.

HAIR SPARKLES

The Quatre Double White Edition head jewellery is a bold and unique creation that’s both a precious jewel and a hair accessory. Its elegant monochromatic codes blend into the wearer’s hair with the help of an elastic band allowing for a new way to assert their style freely.

EMBELLISHING THE NECK

The Quatre Double White Edition small tie necklace is an exquisite creation that permits adjustment of the length for a variety of styles. The Quatre Double White Edition pendant showcases an excellent contrast of materials that reinforces its graphic design.

FOR THE EARS

The Quatre Double White Edition clip earring smartly mixes graphic lines creating a chic and modern look.

The Basic not Basic campaign highlights the collection, with ambassadors like Alexa Chung, Rola, Youn-Jung Go and Mila Al Zahrani embracing this new classic.

JEWELS FOR THE SOUL

Ramadan is a period of reflection, and Messika has created a special campaign to celebrate the spirit of the Holy Month.

48 www.ohlalamag.net JEWELLERY Edit

The French jewellery brand Messika has created a unique bond with the Middle East, a place that holds special meaning for Valérie Messika and her family. To celebrate the spirit of Ramadan, the maison has created a campaign to pay homage to the women of the region. “The Middle Eastern women are some of the most inspirational I have encountered,” said Valérie. “They possess strength and softness in equal parts and have a quiet sense of determination that enables them to pursue success in a manner that is authentically their own.”

Three empowered Arab women of diverse backgrounds and personalities were chosen to star in this introspective session.

Saudi tennis player Yara Alhogbani was invited alongside Emirati designer Mariam Al Remeithi and Kuwait-based Lebanese actress Laila Abdallah. In an intimate and private setting, the women were adorned in iconic pieces from Messika’s fine and high jewellery collections.

Yara is the first female tennis player to represent Saudi Arabia professionally at an international level. Young, dynamic and energetic, she possesses a magnetic appeal that ignites and inspires, just like the maison’s signature diamonds. Displaying similar determination, Mariam started pursuing her passion for clothing design in childhood. The fashion designer has trailblazed her path to Paris, innovating and recalibrating benchmarks in a manner that is symbolic of Messika’s visionary designs. A well-known figure in the region, Laila has a multi-faceted and playful personality, attributes inherently ingrained within the values and sensibilities of Messika’s DNA.

The maison also released, for the first time, the Move Noa bangle in full pavé – available in all three gold colours. The bangle can be worn alone or stacked for a more fashionable look. It has a perfect positioning on the wrist and can be swiftly taken off and put on. The symbolism of the three diamonds at the centre of the bangle refers to: I was, I am, I will be (the woman I was yesterday, the woman I am today and the woman I will be in the future).

For more information, please call Messika boutiques at Villaggio Mall 4444 5755, Mall of Qatar 4444 0266 and Place Vendôme 4416 6665.

CONSERVATIVE-CHIC COLLECTIONS

Embrace the spiritual period of Ramadan and Eid to connect with yourself and others while wearing beautiful outfits. We bring a selection of styles that are great picks for this time of year in the Middle East.

The Holy Month is composed of Ramadan and it culminates with Eid al-Fitr. The first is a time of reflection and spiritual connection when Muslims fast, while the second is a celebration marking the end of this period.

During this time, outfits tend to change. Even non-Muslims adhere to a more modest dress code. Pieces that cover shoulders, knees and torso in loose-fitting shapes are the best choice. Many brands have invested in creating Ramadan collections to inspire ladies to adopt a more reserved way of dressing without losing their stylish selves. Both local and well-known international brands want to cater for this audience with high-end and sophisticated products. There are many gatherings after sunset and during the Eid festivities, which usually run over three days, the garments become more elaborate and brighter colours tend to appear. We bring a selection of special collections to help you put your looks together during this holy time in the Middle East. Whether you’re looking for tailored suits, striking kaftans, modest evening dresses or luxurious loungewear, this curated selection has something for every occasion.

Stylish LIPS

In another example of fashion meets beauty, Dries Van Noten embarks on a journey into the make-up universe.

Many fashion brands have entered the beauty world, and Dries Van Noten – the Belgian label – has recently jumped on this bandwagon. After putting together more than 100 fashion shows, Dries Van Noten knows beauty. Working with leading hair and make-up creatives, his catwalk performances have always featured bold beauty statements. The perfect balance of elegance and surprise is Dries’ makeup signature. Lipsticks are the first products launched as an introduction to the brand’s vision in this field. They will be followed by a complete collection for face, eyes and nails, representing the world of impossible combinations unique to Dries Van Noten.

For this brand, make-up isn’t just about the result; the gestures, rituals and application tools are as important. Dries understands the concept of a desire-inspiring object. Falling in love with a lipstick starts with the case and continues with the colour inside, how it feels on the lips, its scent, ingredients and visual effect.

Four refillable cases combine endlessly recyclable Zamak metal in clashing top and bottom prints inspired by fabrics from the fashion collections. The cases open to reveal a choice of 30 colours in satin, matte and sheer finishes and one clear balm. The formula features rosehip oil to care for the lips. Together with the lipsticks, the brand has also created various accessories, such as lip brushes, mirrors, combs and pouches.

A PURELY BESPOKE FACIAL

A flawless complexion is everyone’s greatest desire. Kay Woodward heads to The Spa by Park Hyatt Doha to achieve just that.

68 www.ohlalamag.net

Park Hyatt Doha couldn’t be more central if it tried. A stone’s throw from the Corniche, nestled in the heart of bustling Msheireb, Downtown Doha, this five-star luxury hotel is easy to reach from anywhere. I’m particularly looking forward to my facial at The Spa by Park Hyatt Doha today. My skin is in desperate need of some TLC and I suspect this is just the place to find it. My therapist, the lovely Agnes, explains that the Purity of the Alps facial is designed to clean, balance and unify the complexion. Even better, it’s suitable for all ages and all skin types simply because each facial is perfectly tailored to each client’s needs. My skin is a mixture of dehydrated and combination. But it won’t be for much longer.

A fabulous footbath filled with scarlet rose petals is the precursor to the treatment. There are tiny macarons and divine chocolates to nibble while my feet gently soak. Next, I recline on the treatment bed. It’s heated. Wow. And it’s adjustable, which means that as well as being wonderfully warm, I’m more comfortable than I dreamed possible.

Agnes uses a range of sumptuous Valmont products to detoxify and oxygenate. She cleanses and tones, using Valmont’s signature ‘butterfly motion’, sweeping her fingers over my skin again and again. It’s utterly relaxing.

There’s a bespoke face masque – a product duo that targets dry and oily areas. They are unctuously cool and soothing. And then something happens that’s never ever occurred during a facial in my life. I drift off to sleep, only awakening when Agnes whisks away the beautiful Valmont products with her feather-light touch. At the end of a wonderful hour, my face is moisturised and glowing, my fine lines blurred and my skin soft. Finally, a peppermint tea hydrates me.

The Spa by Park Hyatt has five treatment rooms for women and three for men. Their extensive repertoire includes more wonderful facials, body scrubs and de-stressing massages. The surroundings with their pale colours and luxurious fabrics and fittings give a true feeling of relaxation and escape, despite being in the middle of bustling Downtown and I could not have wished for more friendly and expert attention.

69 www.ohlalamag.net SPA Spotlight

The use of the many spa facilities is included in the cost of any treatment. If only I had longer, I’d be able to unwind further in the sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi. There’s even a gym with tempting membership packages. This entire floor is devoted to activities designed to invigorate, energise and relax. It’s for women only, while on the floor above, the facilities are virtually mirrored for men. If you have time, there’s a delightful outdoor pool too. And if you’d like to leave the Park Hyatt Doha looking your absolute best, simply visit Aldo Coppola next to The Spa. This bright and airy beauty salon has hairdressing stations and a manicure and pedicure lounge that’s the perfect place for a range of nail treatments, from Signature Manicure with gel polish to acrylic nails.

As I slowly make my way back to the real world, I think of the Purity of the Alps facial. It’s said to be the perfect facial for those who’ve never had one before. But once experienced, it won’t be the last.

A ROOM TO HOST AND REST

Our home is our sanctuary where we feel safe and relaxed. But it is also a place for entertainment – alone or with family and friends. And which is the best space to do it? The living room.

74 www.ohlalamag.net
AL HUZAIFA

OHLALA Homes

We might not give the deserved value to the living room in a home, but this space has great importance. It needs a certain level of versatility to work as a formal area to receive guests but also operates as a casual space for leisure and family time. Architect and interior designer Elias Nader from EN Interiors says: "The living room is the most important space in the house beside the bedroom and the most used space in a house on a daily basis.”

During Ramadan, this room tends to be more populated with the many gatherings during the Holy Month and Eid celebrations. We look more closely at it to better understand how to choose the right elements to make it cosy and functional.

SEATING ARRANGEMENT

One undeniable aspect is that it is a place to sit and spend some time, formally or casually. How you choose and position the seating elements is quite crucial. But to select the best combination of sofa + armchair + ottomans, you need to identify the primary purpose of your living room. Despite being a space with many functions, one stands out, and you should stick to it.

If it is mostly dedicated to movie nights, browsing your smartphone or if you enjoy the old habit of sitting in the living room to read, then you should opt for large sectional sofas. They are spacious and year after year, designers are coming up with items that are more similar to beds where you can easily fall asleep. The Italian brand Minotti is an authority on the subject and has many interesting options.

75 www.ohlalamag.net
BATTILOSSI
MINOTTI

However, if the key purpose of your living room is to host guests, opt for some differentiated seating solutions. A popular option is to have two sofas with a coffee table in between, an armchair, a pouffe and ottomans to create a pleasant space to encourage conversation and help it flow. An arrangement where guests can easily interact, close enough to hear each other and with handy coffee tables in the centre of the space plus a few accent tables at the corners for people to happily chat and sip their cups of coffee at the same time. An important aspect to consider is not to crowd the space and leave enough room for visitors to move around. But that doesn’t mean pushing everything against the wall; create a nice flow with the elements to make it enjoyable and exciting. When it comes to decorating the room, Elias says that its character must reflect the personality of its user – mainly in terms of colours. “We always suggest that if the owner likes dark hues, to always keep them on the wall behind the sofa or somewhere they won’t be facing for long hours. We advise using light colours in the background of the TV unit for a comfortable scenery while binge-watching their favourite shows,” he explains.

FINDING BALANCE

Regardless of the purpose, the space needs to be cohesive. To achieve that, choose similar styles, but play with variation and texture to build an engaging atmosphere. When we say similar, it doesn’t mean matching everything. You should actually be careful with sofas and other seating coordination; make sure they are not too unified in colours, fabric and styles; otherwise, you risk having a flat space that will look like a furniture shop catalogue.

76 www.ohlalamag.net
EN INTERIORS GERVASONI ECO CARPET ELENA SANGUANKEO

The easiest way to unite without looking boring is to make good use of colour. Follow the rule of 60-30-10, where 60% of the objects have a predominant shade, repeating it on many surfaces, such as walls, tiles, rugs and sofas. You then add contrast in 30% of the space using a different hue; you can apply it to pillows, throw blankets, art and small tables. And last, with the 10%, go bold! Choose a vivid tone to create funky accents and add personality to your space. Often, this addition can be done by applying a metallic surface to many details like handles, coffee table legs, accessories and lighting.

THE PROTAGONISTS

There is an element often dismissed, but that makes all the difference: the rug. This décor item can play a central role in a room. It is a piece that puts together all the different compositions. But remember, the carpet needs to be as big as possible. Ideally, all the seating elements and coffee tables

should sit on it. However, if not possible, putting the front legs of your sofa on top of the rug is an good solution. Another aspect to look at is the lighting. The best way to cater to the room’s different functions is to display the lighting on three levels: a leading chandelier, wall lights and lamps. The latter help create a soft ambience. LED strips and indirect lighting in alcoves can add elegance to the area and enhance the beauty of bookcases, furniture or decorative items. If you like art, remember that the bigger, the better and that the painting’s centre needs to be installed at eye level and preferably 20 centimetres above furniture, such as consoles and sofas.

ELEVATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

The bar is raised for precision, ultra-luxury hospitality in Qatar as Amica Sicilia experiences the new Fairmont Doha in the iconic Katara Towers.

LOCAL Escapes

Escapes

In the flurry of recent ambitious development in Qatar no destination has been more hotly anticipated than the twin hotel complex of Katara Towers. Its soaring double curve is inspired by the crossed scimitars of the national seal, framing the blue waters of the Arabian Gulf and demanding attention from all directions.

Rolling up the sweeping front drive, waistcoated valets step forward to relieve me of my bags and in moments, I find myself in the golden glow of the lobby of the Fairmont Doha. It’s a glorious space: walls micro-tiled in 24-carat gold, the floor curving swathes of ochre, amber and sandcoloured marble, mimicking dunes. Music rises from a limited-edition Kawai crystal grand piano, every trembling string visible, while above my head, one of the world’s tallest chandeliers at 56 metres is a cascade of the pearls which were Qatar’s original treasure.

My first stop is at Vaya!, an explosion of Latin American joie de vivre. Here, the open kitchen concept is taken to another level with no division between diners and the polished tables where the South American chefs, specially recruited by Fairmont’s culinary mastermind Dirk Haltenhof, are busy working. Most of them hail from Argentina, including Belén, who, when I arrive, is fine-tuning the heat of the wood-fired roaster and smoker.

In Vaya!’s ceviche iteration, succulent lobster is cold-cured with lime, salt and chilli, its bath of leche de tigre enriched with coconut and jewelled with roast corn, avocado and coriander oil. Beside it sits a dark sultry beauty of a plate of seared Spanish octopus and Peruvian purple potatoes.

One of Fairmont’s most daring ventures is its dedicated mixology lab, headed by Tiziano Tasso. To complete each distinct menu, Tiziano’s team have been creating their own range of artisan distillations, providing an impressive list of virgin mixology. I sample Iguazu, a lively

80 www.ohlalamag.net
TRAVEL

yerba mate-infused blend. As I savour it, Belén arrives bearing the most magnificent grass-fed Tomahawk steak, fragrant with rosemary, ready to be blessed with chimichurri sauce and devoured alongside caramelised sweet potatoes.

Instead of returning to reception, I have the luxury of checking in from the comfort of my room. The door opens to reveal walls of polished chestnut-coloured wood and creamy marble, soft curves, thick carpets and a walk-in wardrobe. The quartz walls of the bathroom glow softly from within, illuminating double sinks stocked with Clarins skincare, the goldlined shower and an interactive smart bath. In the bedroom, furnished in pale blue and cream, the stately king-sized bed is nestled in the protective curve of a shell-like cushioned headboard. The shelves are stacked with specially curated art books and the sofa curves around a table bearing homemade madeleines and fresh peach juice. But the crowning glory is that the floor-to-ceiling windows slide back to extend the space across a full-width balcony looking out across both city and sea.

At Fairmont, there’s no better way to start a new day than by sampling the caffeinated stylings of Cafés Richard, the hotel’s coffee hub. French press or aeropress, Arabic or Turkish, from Ethiopia, Sumatra or Honduras, there’s a brew for you to go with the infinite array of home-baked pastries, bread and cakes, cold cuts and fruit salads. After agonising, I opt for a Colombian Grand Cru Arabica cappuccino to complement my eggs Benedict on artisan purple cornbread.

Fortified, I go exploring. The main pool is a stylish infinity, opening generously out seawards. The gym and spa complex occupies the heart of the hotel, offering a comprehensive approach to mind and body health. The indoor pool, a dynamic community space, is backed by an integrated climbing wall; the 82-piece gym is supported by the Pillar Fitness coaching institute, which will also lead studio classes. The spa and Hammam feature separate male and female wellness complexes. And, for those guests who want an even higher level of exclusivity, Fairmont Gold is a privileged ‘hotel within a hotel’, with executive lounges, dedicated butlers and a quiet, adults-only terrace pool for exclusive use.

Escapes

My wanderings lead me to the elegant surroundings of Dôme. Its glittering centrepiece is a 12-foot, walk-in glass cloche, housing the unique patisserie creations of the hotel’s expert pastry chefs. I find a sheltered nook in the landscaped tea garden beyond, looking out to sea. I’m here for the afternoon tea, an iconic meal with tea and scones – but at Dôme, rendered with playful creativity and technical innovation. It arrives with a coup-detheatre, dry ice cascading to reveal a multitude of exquisite treats. Miniature forest-inspired eclairs filled with savoury ragu are topped with minuscule mushroom caps pickled with ponzu and lemon. A retro egg mimosa is delicately reconstructed between light brioche and cream cheese layers. But the limelight is stolen by the sweets. My personal favourites are a miniature chocolate Sachertorte with apricot replaced by tart raspberry and, best of all, a tiny bronze tower revealing a symphony in pistachio with fine layers of creamy custard, crunchy nut butter, light mousse and sweet gelee. I wash these down with smoky amber Lapsang Souchong tea from Dôme’s extensive library of Newby teas.

Is there anything more indulgent than having a spa come to your own space? My expert therapists Boom and Tika lower the lights as I slip between the warmth of fluffy towels and close my eyes as the scents of orange blossom and jasmine fill the air. Tika starts at my feet, with warm hands working up my legs to focus on the tightness in my hips and lower back. Then with deeper pressure, she works the warm oil into the major muscles of my back and shoulders, coaxing out the knots and extending my limbs. We finish with a micro-massage of my neck and scalp, releasing those infinitesimally small muscles that hold so much stress around the head, and lulling me into total relaxation in the sanctuary of my room.

I resurface just in time for dinner. The simple décor at Masala Library, clean cream warmed by inlaid brass panelling, puts the focus firmly on the food. As manager Lawrence Raj explains, this is the first outpost outside India

82 www.ohlalamag.net

of Jiggs Kalra, the father of modern molecular Indian cuisine. In the hands of Michelin-trained head chef Saneesh Varghese, the food here becomes sadhana, an almost spiritual meditative discipline in pursuit of true perfection. The amuse-bouche sets the tone immediately. Creamy buttermilk lassi aerated to the finest foam, barely sweet, subtly sour, just enough to tease my taste buds into action. A truly rare treat follows it: Gucchi mushroom (one of the most expensive in the world). A single perfect specimen marinated, its stem stuffed with ricotta and then roasted in the tandoor, served in wild fungi Yakhni broth with truffle malai cream. It’s one impassioned mouthful, which melts then blooms into waves of evocative umami. The revelations keep coming. Salmon Bhel takes the fun puffed rice street-food dish and splices it with the rich butteriness of roast salmon beneath the satisfyingly bitter filigree of a charcoal crisp. Three bite-sized Kulchas (a type of leavened bread from northern India) burst open to reveal a melting middle of Wagyu beef cheek, cooked for 60 hours to a dark velvet. The butter chicken is hand-pulled, liberating flavour from the shredded breast, which rests in a coppery Makhani foam, bringing an irresistible lightness to this creamy classic. As the knife pierces the tightly sealed bread lid of the Mughlai Lamb Dum Parda Biryani, the scents of rose and saffron rise with the steam, a tribute to Arabia. But what takes my breath away is the dessert. The dazzling sweetness of fried Jalebi reinvented as microscopic, tongue-tingling ‘caviar’, topped with a golden saffron froth floating on pistachio rabdi (a dish made with full-fat milk, sugar, cardamom and nuts) elixir. Forget everything you ever thought you knew about Indian sweets. My senses are overwhelmed. Before I go back to the room, I descend to the garden terraces. Looking back along the promenade, the sweeping curves of Katara Towers crown the Lusail skyline like a pair of welcoming arms reaching upwards, eager and unafraid to exceed even the highest expectations.

Jordan’s vibrant capital Amman is a great choice; from its breathtaking natural landscapes to world-renowned historical and religious sites, this destination is a part of the Middle East waiting to be uncovered. Discover stories of the past as you visit museums and explore ancient Roman ruins, such as the Amman Citadel, on a historic site that dates back to the Bronze Age. It is surrounded by a 1,700m-long wall and the site includes the iconic Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. Within the citadel are also the ruins of a sixth-century Byzantine Church and the Jordan Archaeological Museum. Another famous landmark of the city is the Roman Theatre which was built in the second century AD. The modern-day restored version of the theatre is cut into the side of a hill, has a seating capacity of 6,000 people, and hosts many important cultural events and concerts. Travellers can also visit the famous Al-Husseini Mosque, Amman’s oldest mosque and the first major architectural landmark of the Jordanian Kingdom. On the other hand, Amman has several wonderful souqs spread throughout the city where visitors can find traditional clothes, art pieces, decorations and all kinds of colourful trinkets. Some of the best are Souq Jara, Souq elSagha and Souq Mango. Rainbow Street is another famous city hot spot where tourists can experience a great time, be it nightlife, entertainment or delicious meals at various cafes and restaurants with plenty of hip coffee places and charming restaurants with amazing views. GOA, INDIA

The tropical climate, beautiful beaches and incredible food of Goa are some of the many reasons that make this smallest Indian state a wonderful place for a quick escape. The capital city is Panaji; however, the state is so small that it is treated like one big city.

Travellers can kick off their vacation by checking out sites that embody the history and culture of Goa. Among the best ways to do so is by visiting the many churches, forts and museums spread across this charming region. One of the most famous is the Basilica of Bom Jesus; the church was built in 1605 and is located in Old Goa. It showcases a remarkable architectural style and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The main draw to this destination is its 103km coastline, studded with more than 30 golden-sand beaches. From the lively and bustling shore lines like Candolim, Baga, Ashwem and others in the north to the serene and more relaxed spots such as Palolem, Colva and more in the south, there’s a fit for the most discerning beach lovers. Fort Aguada is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and is one of many historical forts. The numerous sandy shores also offer some of the most fun and exciting water sports activities for adventurous visitors, from parasailing, jet skiing and banana boat rides to even surfing at selected spots.

Food is undeniably enjoyed and celebrated fully, from tantalising seafood offerings to savoury meat and vegetarian options in local and global preparations (the Indo-Portuguese influence is a treat for the taste buds) – there’s something for everyone. Goa also has an old Latin Quarter in Panaji – Fontainhas. This gorgeous neighbourhood resembles an olden-days European town with its quaint houses built in a Portuguese architectural style. Other major draws to this area are its buzzing nightlife, amazing flea markets and night bazaars. Some of India’s best luxury resorts and wellness spas are located in Goa.

A DELIGHTFUL TASTE OF THE LEVANT

An exceptional dining spread of Lebanese flavours was experienced by Luke Bennett at Babel.

90 www.ohlalamag.net

CHIC Eats

Lebanese culture is synonymous with flavoursome food partnered with instrumental music to create a celebration of life. Step into Babel at the striking St. Regis Marsa Arabia Island, The Pearl-Qatar, and you’ll be immersed in an authentic Lebanese experience with added sophistication and elegance. Dazzling décor featuring large, mirrored walls with a scattering of marbled ornaments and potted greenery creates a chic and spacious setting perfect for the fine-dining experience that awaits.

On arrival, we were warmly greeted and escorted to our table in the stylish, outdoor seating area that offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the marina. Alain, the friendly and attentive manager, passionately explained that the concept of Babel is to take traditional Lebanese food and elevate it to a more contemporary, refined level utilising the finest ingredients. As soon as the cold mezze plates were placed in front of us, it was evident that we were about to experience Lebanese cuisine like never before. The familiar sight of finely diced parsley signified the arrival of Babel’s take on the well-known Lebanese salad, Tabboulet El Bahar. However, as the name suggests, this signature dish wasn’t your ordinary tabbouleh; plump, flavourful shrimp and undertones of ginger proved to be outstanding additions. The Shrimp Salad highlighted how a skilful chef armed with carefully sourced produce can work wonders. An assortment of fresh tomatoes, Indian onions and hearty shrimp were enveloped by a delectable soy and coriander dressing with a depth of flavour beyond what I’ve previously tasted. Next up was a wonderfully balanced bowl of bulgur wheat named Majroucheh. The earthy grains were expertly prepared, retaining a fluffy yet chewy consistency; scatterings of pumpkin and pomegranate seeds gifted a satisfying crunch, and drizzles of syrupy molasses laced this dish with a pleasurable amount of sweetness.

91 www.ohlalamag.net

CHIC Eats

Floating stylishly on a bed of ice was the vividly coloured Kibbeh Nayyeh – a dish adored by many across Lebanon and it’s easy to see why. The raw meat was expertly spiced and blended into an extremely smooth texture ideal for spreading across the warm, accompanying Arabic bread. Sided with grains of crushed wheat that provided a crunchy texture to cleverly balance out the softness of the paste-like meat. Despite regularly eating Lebanese food, this was my first time trying Kibbeh Nayyeh; I was pleasantly surprised, and the surprises didn’t stop there. Taking an item of food and turning it into a piece of art that tastes as good as it looks is a commendable skill, and the next dish, Eggplant Flower, was exactly that. A smoky, grilled eggplant was delicately dressed in creamy tahini, slices of peppers and stuffed with slightly tangy, pickled eggplants. While we continued to appreciate the serene views, a collection of hot mezze was generously bestowed upon us. Starting with the surprise of the evening: Maajouka. With each slice of the knife, a gooey concoction of mozzarella, mushroom and pistachio tantalisingly oozed from the chargrilled kebab meat. For many, kebab meat can be overly greasy; however, the beef was expertly chargrilled. Enhancing the dish yet further was a marvellous coating of sharp cherry reduction that expertly balanced the rich nature of the cheesy filling. Lightly breaded fingers of fresh calamari sided with a creamy tartar sauce highlighted the importance of sourcing superior ingredients. The celebration of outstanding seafood continued with an array of voluminous, sauteed shrimp elegantly displayed on a bed of grilled eggplant and capsicum permeated with a pleasant hint of chilli. Finally, Octopus ProvenÇal proved to be a favourite dish for me. Beautifully braised in a heavenly mix of coriander, garlic and lemon, the luscious taste matched the exquisite texture of the firm, caramelised tentacles.

92 www.ohlalamag.net

Still salivating from the exceptional mezze dishes, a suave waiter served the main courses. First, shredding tenderised fibres of lamb from the bone that sat on a bed of rice packed with flavour from Oriental spices and cardamon. Halved almonds added both an enjoyable crunch and a nutty taste to complement the delicious rice. Next, a grilled baby chicken was served alongside moreish cubes of spiced potatoes finished with a sprinkling of salt. Coated in wonderfully crispy skin, the chicken was flawlessly chargrilled, maintaining a juicy, succulent interior. Both main courses were ideal for sharing and would definitely please the ‘meatloving’ diners.

As the evening progressed, the balcony became a hive of energy and the charming addition of a violinist and pianist gifted live, acoustic music to elevate the stylish ambience to extraordinary heights. Whilst savouring the melodic harmonies, the desserts arrived to provide a decadent end to an exceptional evening. Carving my fork into a sizeable profiterole exposed a generous filling of vanilla cream that complemented the perfectly baked pastry as a smothering of velvety chocolate sauce added a touch more richness. Alain introduced the final dish as ‘Knefeh the Babel way’, and it proved not to be the average knefeh. Layers of shredded phyllo pastry were satisfyingly crunchy and expertly harmonised with the iconic, stringy cheese and crumbly pistachio filling. Bringing a delightful freshness and the added ‘Babel touch’ were substantial spheres of delectable ice cream and drizzles of chocolate sauce.

With an obsession for exceptional ingredients, a passion for outstanding service and a constant desire to provide an unforgettable experience, Babel is creating waves of excitement throughout Doha’s dining scene and is certainly a welcomed addition.

Rites of Passage

This month we reflect on the importance of memorialising life events.

Eid means festival or feast and there are two of them. Eid alFitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Holy Month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwāl, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar (Muslims use a lunar calendar, which means that it may fall in any season of the year). Eid al-Adha is the feast of sacrifice, charity, gift-giving and festive meals and usually falls a little over two months after Eid al-Fitr.

With these celebrations in the near future, we wonder about the importance of rituals in our daily lives from a societal aspect. According to the UNESCO website, social practices and festive events structure the lives of communities and groups. They are significant because they reaffirm the identity of those who practise them, whether performed in public or private. They can have a religious meaning, help to mark the

passing of the seasons or stages of a person’s life. According to psychologists, rituals help us experience stability and continuity; they give us a feeling of trust in life’s flow and forward movement. They can also help us connect with our roots and ancestors and have a sense of belonging –being part of something bigger than ourselves.

Some common ceremonies are birthdays, marriages and funerals, but also some group activities. This means that Friday lunches and dinners for Muslims and Sunday dinners with family, which are popular in western countries, also fall into this category.

No matter what rituals you keep in your life, they are an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle. They mark the beginning, the journey or the end of something. Don’t dismiss them; own them and commemorate them with others.
