Oh My Malta Summer 2019

Page 1

SUMMER 2019 Did you know that the word Malta is derived from the Greek word honey? The ancient Greeks called the island (Melitē) meaning ‘honey-sweet’, possibly for Malta’s unique production of honey. And guess what? We still produce that Maltese honey, which finds its special properties from the flower of the wild thyme that attract our bees to feast on. The flower of thyme is purple, and if you wish to move out of the comfort of Malta’s towns and villages and venture into the countryside, you will see the thyme shrubs known as Sagħtar in Maltese, like a purplish carpet over the dry rocks. Yet, thyme needs one important item: warmth and sun. And like the Maltese and those who visit us throughout the year, the thyme yearns for ‘Xemx’, Sun in Maltese. We love to listen to a wonderful pop ballad and in it we pay homage to the Sun and welcome it every time and at every moment. Our Sun can be at times unforgiving, but it makes the Island burst into energy. The Sunny Islands of Malta open its arms to youth, with their thrilling wish for vitality and love for life. Music, dance, celebration great food and wine make the ambience of the Maltese Islands a great place to celebrate. Always in the background of culture and history. Maltese summers are dominated by the village ‘festas’ and the fireworks, which are a must for all visitors and Maltese alike. A display of artistry and pyrotechnics that is exceptional for this side of the planet. Oh My Malta brings you a small taster of the Maltese and their home. Do not leave before you have a taste of Maltese life. A cold Maltese beer at a village festa, a Maltese ftira, a visit to the fish market in Marsaxlokk, a bite into a Maltese peppery cheeslet (ġbejna) and more importantly a dive or dip in our beautiful sea. Grab a small memory of Malta and Gozo in your heart before you leave, and we promise to welcome you back with open arms.

Malta continued to register growth in terms of tourism, during the last few months. Following the positive results registered during Malta’s traditional shoulder months, we are now heading into the summer months. We are therefore gearing up to provide a better touristic experience and product than ever before. Summer 2019 is jam-packed with events and things to do around Malta. With the likes of big concerts and events such as the Isle of MTV 2019, the Isle of MTV Malta Music Week, SummerDaze Malta in collaboration with BBC Radio One and Creamfields, Glitch, World Club Dome 2019, and Elrow amongst many others. The Government’s vision is to enhance Malta’s connectivity both in terms of traditional markets as well as new markets, which we consider as emerging in terms of tourism. In fact, this Summer, several routes were introduced to and from Malta, making the country more accessible to non-traditional markets, such as China, Japan, Australia and the Middle East. This is attributed to the introduction of flights from Qatar Airways, which will be flying daily from Malta to Doha starting this Summer. To grow such markets, we have embarked on joint marketing initiatives to promote Malta across these regions.

We are currently working hand in hand with key stakeholders on medium to long-term strategies, for sustainable tourism until the year 2025. The primary objectives of these strategies is to attract more quality tourism, to continue growing our tourism numbers sustainably, while continuing to address seasonality, to develop new touristic niches around Malta that will attract different cohorts of visitors and to enhance our tourism product through better and more resources. We have also announced a number of initiatives to address the human resources aspect of our product. Hence, we have signed an agreement between the Institute of Tourism Studies and the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, paving the way for the Institute of Tourism Studies to offer world-class Masters courses in hospitality and tourism-related areas. This is complemented by several initiatives, relating to the infrastructural aspect of our product. The Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation has launched regeneration projects in key touristic areas around Malta such as Valletta, Msida and Floriana, complementing other work being done by the Foundation for Tourism Zones all around the island. Our ultimate goal is to become the best destination in the Mediterranean, ensuring that tourism remains a strong and major contributor to the Maltese economy.

St James Cavalier (Spazju Kreattiv)

The construction of the ‘Royal Opera House’ as it was originally known, was formally approved in 1860. In 1873, the theatre accidentally caught on fire and was extensively damaged. Then, in 1942, the theatre was subject to an aerial attack by Stuka dive-bombers. Today, Pjazza Teatru Rjal is regarded as a monument that stands for the heroism and dignity of the Maltese.

Plans for the building were originally laid down in 1566, following The Great Siege, with its primary function being to serve as a raised gun-platform. Its interior and identity were completely revised and reformed and is now known as Malta’s national Centre for Creativity – ‘Spazju Kreattiv’.

‘HONEST ENTERTAINMENT’ AT T E AT R U M A N O E L

Following centuries of unrest and a myriad of conquerors, the Military of the Order of St John brought about a period of stability and development to the Maltese Islands. The newly fortified city of Valletta, administrative centre and home to many forming the Order, witnessed another development as Malta’s cultural and entertainment hub. Throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries, the demand for theatrical and dramatic productions rose, as the Maltese embraced entertainment, which was originally reserved only for nobility. Back then, shows were put on by amateurs and theatre professionals were then housed at the Knight’s Auberges around the city, or in the open. In 1731, Fra António Manoel de Vilhena, Grand Master of the Knights of

Cosi Fan Tutte Photo: Christine J. Muscat-Azzopardi

Malta, commissioned and personally funded the construction of the central building to keep the young knights of the Order of St. John out of mischief but also to provide the general public with “honest entertainment”. The motto, “ad honestam populi oblectationem” is inscribed above the main entrance to the Theatre. The first ever performance, on the 19th January 1732, was a classic Italian tragedy, Scipione Maffei’s La Merope. The players in the production were the Knights themselves and the set designed by the Knights’ chief architect. Originally known as Teatro Pubblico, it became known as the Theatre Royal under Brisith rule, a title it lost in 1866 to its new rival: the much larger Royal Opera House, which was heavily damaged in World War II. It was then named Teatru Manoel. Besides being a Grade 1 listed build-

ing, one of the finest examples of baroque architecture and one of the oldest working theatres in the world, the Manoel, as it is affectionately referred to by locals, is also Malta’s national theatre. It is a major contributor to the development of the local cultural scene. Grandmaster António Manoel de Vilhena’s original objective for the Theatre has transformed and developed significantly over the years. From just providing honest entertainment to the public, today, the Manoel’s mission is to entertain, inform and educate and is committed to the presentation of quality artistic productions, to the creation of new audiences and to provide a principal performing platform for local as well as international artists. 2122 2618 • Triq it-Teatru Antik, Valletta

Untold stories

at Fort St Angelo

During the Royal Navy’s occupation of Fort St Angelo in Birgu, access to this military site was strictly prohibited to civilians, except for the 7th and 8th September. Maltese and British servicemen had clearly defined spaces where they were allowed to enter according to their work and rank. At the time, only a few individuals had ever visited all the areas of the fort. Heritage Malta’s latest exhibition ‘Behind Closed Doors: Fort St Angelo and the Royal Navy 1906 – 1979’ is revealing a series of untold narratives which occurred during this period. While the bigger picture of this exhibition presents the naval use of the fort and the architectural modifications which were done to it to address the necessities of the time, the core of this event focuses on personal recollections. In the past thousand years, Fort St Angelo enjoyed perpetual military relevance in the defence of Malta, with continuous upgrades and refurbishments as dictated by the ever-evolving technology of war. Yet, it was during the British rule that this role was exploited to its fullest, when the fort was first utilized as a major coastal fortification and later transformed into a Royal Navy base ship, effectively transforming it from a powerful military stronghold to a ‘stone frigate’.

Upon its transfer in 1906 to the Admiralty, Fort St Angelo became a naval shore establishment. In 1912, it was renamed HMS Egmont, after the old depot ship still moored next to it, then to HMS St Angelo in 1933. As the fort was considered a ship, naval nomenclature was applied. Open spaces were often referred to as ‘decks’, living quarters as ‘messes’, bedrooms as ‘cabins’, and kitchens as ‘galleys’. The primary use of HMS St Angelo was as a depot ship, to provide accomodation for reserve foreign naval personnel stationed in Malta and lodgings for sailors awaiting their transfer back home or to another ship. Architectural works were implemented to provide accomodation and ancillary facilities for ratings stationed therein and separated according to rank and nationality. Entertainment facilities were also constructed, comprising several bars, a library, a games room, and a recreation room which included a cinema. The fort had a staff complement of both Maltese and British ratings with a daily life routine as on board a naval ship. A number of shared narratives by these servicemen, together with a series of intriguing personal objects which were donated to Heritage Malta have been included in this exhibition to enhance the visitors’ experience. The exhibition ‘Behind Closed Doors: Fort St Angelo and the Royal Navy 1906 – 1979’ is located at Fort St Angelo and will remain open to the public until the 8th September 2019. Opening hours: 9.00hrs to 17.00hrs (last admission at 16.30hrs) More information is available on Heritage Malta’s website www. heritagemalta.org

Marsaxlokk is known for its colourful ‘luzzu’ boats; small fishing boats painted in bright shades of blue, red, yellow and green and a pair of eyes at the front, an ancient custom said to protect the fishermen at sea. The popular belief is that the origin of their design is Phoenician, dating back to 800 BC.

Words by Philippa zammit Marsaxlokk (marsa-shlock) is a traditional charming fishing village, located in the south-eastern part of Malta, with a population of 3,500 people. In fact, the name, a composition of ‘Marsa’ and ‘Xlokk’, translates to ‘harbour’ and ‘southeast’, respectively. Marsaxlokk Bay is Malta’s second largest natural harbour. It was an easy landing place for pirates and the Ottoman Turks. In fact, it was here that the Turkish fleet was anchored during the Great Seige of 1565. Napoleon’s army also landed here during the French invasion of 1798. The village is well-known for its packed-to-the-gills Sunday fish market as well as its multiple top-notch eateries lining the harbour, offering seasonal fresh seafood. Enjoy a full view of the picturesque harbour whilst indulging at one of the many seafood restaurants; a feast for the eyes and taste buds alike. Marsaxlokk has seen two national major investments; the Freeport Terminal (1988) and The Delimara Power Station complex, another power station complementing the other one in Marsa. The beautiful fishing village of Marsaxlokk is the ultimate place to experience the very best of Maltese scenery, culture and cuisine. Despite the industrial works taking place, Marsaxlokk retains its natural beauty and remains one of the most attractive places to visit.

St Peter’s Pool One of the most well-known natural swimming pools Malta has to offer, St Peter’s Pool is straight off a postcard. Located in the southwest of Malta, it offers brilliant snorkeling opportunities, as well as sunbathing ones, on the high flat rocks that surround the pool. Though there are ladders that provide access to the sea, the more adventurous ones can also dive into the water from a few metres up. Popular with locals and tourists alike, St Peter’s Pool is rather difficult to get to and parking on top of the cliff overlooking the pool is not recommended, which means the spot is rarely overcrowded and thus, worth the visit.

some spots in Marsaxlokk that are definitely worth a visit

Delimara Lighthouse A British lighthouse built on the southernmost tip of Malta in 1856, a few minutes’ walk from St Peter’s Pool. Located at Delimara cliff edge, the lighthouse acted as a beacon to the Maltese shipping industry as well as a landmark of British architecture. Until 1896, the lighthouse had a static red lantern which was replaced by a more powerful gasoline lamp, giving off alternating beams of red and white light every 30 seconds. It was an important reference for ships coming from Barbary and Egypt. The building consists of an octagonal 22m tower dominating the cliff over Marsaxlokk Bay, with a two storey house under it; two lighthouse-keepers’ apartments that have been converted into a holiday let accommodation and are now guarded by a voluntary organisation, Din l-Art Helwa.

Fort San Lucian Fort San Lucian, also known as Saint Lucian Tower is the second largest watchtower in Malta, after Saint Thomas Tower. The original tower was built by the Order of Saint John to protect Marsaxlokk Bay from the possible invasion of the Ottomans between 1610 and 1611. An artillery battery was added in around 1715, and the complex was upgraded into a fort in the 1790s to further strengthen its defences. During the invasion of Malta by the French in 1798, Fort San Lucian was one of the few forts to offer resistance to the force of Napoleon. In the 1870s, the fort was rebuilt by the British in the polygonal style. During the Second World War the fort was used as a bomb depot. Today, the tower and fort are used by the Malta Aquaculture Research Centre, where the breeding, hatching and rearing of various species of fish are studied.

Xrobb l-Għaġin Xrobb L-Għaġin is the south-eastern most point of the Maltese Islands. It is a nature park and sustainable development centre, aiming to safeguard an area of over 155,000 square metres of natural habitat. The remains of a Neolithic temple on the site have largely been lost due to coastal erosion, but the cliff scenery is no less remarkable for it. The purpose of the project is education, demonstration and research in sustainable environment solutions, with the overall objective of increasing the use of renewable energy, wastewater management and safeguarding biodiversity. In the middle of the nature park, there’s also a quiet hostel run by the centre, providing accommodation at very low prices and promoting nature and enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings.

Marsaxlokk Market Freshly caught fish is transferred directly to the stalls where it’s sold within hours by street hawkers; seasonal fish like mackerel and awrat, octopus, squids, prawns, shrimps, and even sea snakes. Although originally a fish market, it has developed and now also sells locally produced honey, homemade jams, local souvenirs, handmade lace table-cloths and clothing items. There is a market that takes place daily but expands further on a Sunday, taking over the whole harbour front and focusing mainly on the retailing of fish caught by local fishermen. Sundays are usually pretty busy when locals flock to the village to get their hands on the fresh catch of the day. During the week, the village is much more relaxed and navigating the market is a lot easier. OH MY MALTA 27

Popeye Village, the film set of the 1980 Musical Production ‘Popeye’, has been turned into a fun theme park, where you can take a boat ride, participate in water activities and even make and star in your own short movie. Popeye Village is one of Malta’s most distinctive attractions where one can find the 39 year old film-set of the musical production ‘Popeye’ that was filmed in Malta in 1980. Popeye Village offers the most picturesque setting for those who are looking to have a fun day out during their stay in Malta. The Film set is located in the northern part of Malta at the breath-taking Anchor Bay in Mellieħa. Lately, the village has been receiving international attention due to it being a live tribute to the late Robin Williams, who played the main part of the one-eyed sailor. It has also been named as one of Malta’s Top Attractions on a number of international portals. Besides roaming through a still standing original Paramount Pictures film set, one can also become a movie star for a day by participating in one of the main activities: Take 2 Filming. One can do this by forming part of a cast and starring in an actual movie. Participants will have a blast and get a taste of Hollywood. The activity includes everything you could possibly imagine, from plotting of scenes and rehearsals to costume-picking and the actual filming. This is followed by a visit to the cinema to watch the Premier of the movie. Copies of this epic thriller can be purchased after the preview. A full animation programme runs throughout the film set; viewing of sketches, dance routines, game shows and puppet shows. One can also meet Popeye, Olive Oyl

and the rest of the gang during animation shows, and of course, take selfies with them throughout the whole day. In Summer, make sure you spend some time and have a thrill on the inflatable obstacle course. Experience the thrill of running, bouncing and jumping along the course and on the water trampolines or just lazy about on one of the Bedouin beds and enjoy the warmth of the Mediterranean Sea. When the weather permits, a free boat trip around Anchor Bay is offered to every guest. The film set has hosted a number of events, functions and activities for both local and foreign corporate incentive groups. Various areas of the film set can be used for different functions and activities, including casual BBQ lunches and dinners. It can also be transformed into different themes such as a Pirate Village, a Western Village or a Hawaiian Village - the possibilities are endless. The village is setup to accommodate different games and activities for team building activities and treasure hunts. The film set is also used as a wedding venue for those looking to host their dream fairytale wedding.

MALTA'S TOP 10 Summer is well and truly upon us and if you’re here in Malta anytime between June and September, we definitely recommend scheduling in a couple (or 10) beach days. The sun is shining, the skies are blue, we’ve compiled a list of our ten favourite beaches, just for you.

Fomm ir-Rih

Location: Limits of Mgarr Type: Pebbly Tips: Bring water and a packed lunch with you

Known as one of the most isolated beaches in Malta (but also one of the most beautiful), Fomm ir-Rih is not for the faint hearted. A favourite amongst snorkelers, divers and those who appreciate lack of mobile reception and peace and serenity, it’s a 20-minute hike down a sometimes steep and slippery pathway to get there but we guarantee you that it’s worth the trip.

Ghajn Tuffieha a.k.a. Riviera

Location: Manikata, Mellieha Type: Sandy Tips: The beach is known for having strong undercurrents during off-season

With clay slopes and high cliffs on either side of the bay, red sand and clear blue water, Ghajn Tuffieha, Maltese for ‘Apple’s Eye’ is easily one of Malta’s most stunning beaches. Only accessible by a network of footpaths and a flight of steps, but again, worth the trip. It’s a blue flag certified beach, as well as a Special Area of Conservation due to its unique geological features. Oh, and there’s a lifeguard, restaurant and toilet and shower facilities on the sand, too. This means you’ll only need to hike back up to your car once you’re ready to call it a day. OH MY MALTA

Ghadira Bay

Location: Mellieha Type: Sandy Tips: Get there as early as you can to find free parking

Presenting: Malta’s largest (and possibly most visited) beach, Mellieha Bay. Roughly 800m long and awarded a Blue Flag status, Ghadira is perfect for spending a day with family and friends. Facilities such as various water sports including water-skiing, windsurfing, banana rides and sea kayaking are available and make Mellieha Bay a must-visit spot on your holiday. It’s easily accessible and also features several restaurants, snack bars and two hotels. Ghadira’s got you covered.

Paradise Bay

Location: Mellieha Type: Sandy Tips: Mornings and weekdays are best because it gets rather crowded on weekends

Offering a completely unobstructed view of Gozo and Comino Islands, Paradise Bay truly lives up to its name. Again, this bay can only be accessed by a fairly long flight of steps but don’t fret, anything your heart desires is available on the beach, including sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, restrooms and food and drinks! Oh and also, throughout summer, the Lido is open every night for dinner, with live entertainment on selected nights during the week.

Gnejna

Location: Limits of Mgarr Type: Sandy Tips: The rightmost, hidden part of the bay is known for nudists

The third sandy beach of the chain of beaches, including Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay, Gnejna is slightly smaller and much less crowded. If you’re not into the orange sand of the bay, just a few metres away is a stretch of flat limestone rock, perfect for absorbing those rays. Known for its unusual clay slopes and limestone cliffs, it’s a bit of a risky walk down from Ghajn Tuffieha, but definitely worth it if you’re looking for a bit of a quieter spot.

Golden Bay Location: Manikata, Mellieha Type: Sandy Tips: Bring a volleyball along!

Known for its reddish sand and naturally formed dunes on its surrounding slopes, Golden Bay is larger, easier to access and has a couple more restaurants on site than it’s sister, Ghajn Tuffieha. One of the few beaches where you can cook up some sausages on the barbecue in the evenings, Golden Bay is a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike.

St Peter’s Pool

St Thomas’ Bay

One of the most well-known natural swimming pools Malta has to offer, St Peter’s Pool is straight off a postcard.

Known as ‘ir-Ramla’ to the Maltese, St Thomas Bay is quiet, peaceful and sandy. It also offers several small and shallow sandy beaches, perfect for kids and the whole family alike, flat rocks and concrete platforms, which set the perfect scene for sunbathing and chilling out. What makes this bay special? It’s ideal for windsurfing. This natural inlet is a lovely seaside haven popular with Maltese families as it’s surrounded by white limestone cliffs, rows of beach houses and is just a 10 minute walk from the centre of Marsascala.

Location: Delimara, Marsaxlokk Type: Rocky Tip: Bring snacks and a whole lot of sun-block as there aren’t too many shaded areas

Location: Marsascala Type: Sandy Tips: Mentally prepare yourself. You’re going windsurfing!

Wied il-Ghasri

Location: Ghasri, Gozo Type: Pebbly Tip: Comfortable shoes are a must, there’s a bit of a walk

A stunning, narrow creek that’s one of the most picturesque places you’ll see in a while, Ghasri Valley’s cove is around 300m long, with a winding inlet and high cliffs on either side. The water is crystal blue, calm and ideal for divers and snorkelers as it also features underwater caves, namely the well-known Cathedral cave. Though the pebbled beach is rather small and accommodates only a few sunbathers, Wied l-Ghasri is a unique hideaway that you really shouldn’t miss if you’re venturing out to Malta’s sister island of Gozo.

Blue Lagoon

Location: Comino Type: Sand and rocks Tip: If crowds aren’t for you, get there super early

Picture this: walking into crystal clear water, with a white sandy bottom. Snorkelling and discovering all the colourful marine life Blue Lagoon has to offer, whilst exploring the various caves, both above and under water. If it’s a day of adventure and taking beautiful photographs you’re after, Blue Lagoon in Comino should definitely be on the top of your list. Only bathers are permitted in the lagoon so as to prevent any boats from disturbing the clear water, and there is a small sandy beach on either side.

KURT CALLEJA’S HERE TO STAY! Malta is booming when it comes to the music scene. In this exclusive interview, we chat with Kurt Calleja about his background, progress, and what lies ahead for the musician.

You broke into the music industry in Malta in 2011 and made waves in 2012 after winning the Malta Eurovision Song contest with the catchy hit song ‘This is the Night’. How did Malta shape you and your music? And can you talk about the music industry here? I often feel like an outsider in the music industry as I normally do things my own way. Music means so much more than just earning a buck… it’s about seeing people happy, singing and dancing along. A musician can inspire the listener and heighten people’s awareness about a particular subject or feeling. Rehearsals and practise take up a lot of time. People’s demands are constantly increasing as are the costs of rehearsal rooms, equipment and studio time. Malta is too small to be considered a territory and this renders it a tiny market in business terms. We must come to the realisation that having local music played on local radios stations is far from enough and therefore should start looking at exporting local tracks overseas. In May you hosted your 30th birthday concert, a show in aid of the Richmond Foundation where you launched tracks from your second album. Can you tell us a bit more about this? For as long as I can remember, I’ve always celebrated my birthday with a few friends who also happen to be musicians. The celebrations would always turn into jamming sessions unexpectedly. This year, my creative team and I organised a birthday celebration on a larger scale, ‘30ty’, which featured performances by me as well as other musicians. All proceeds went to The Richmond Foundation, raising a total of over Eur3,000. What inspired your latest single ‘Sweet Chili’? The song was inspired by a past relationship. My ex-girlfriend’s favourite sauce happened to be sweet chili so I thought it would make for a good metaphor that represented out relationship; ‘sweet’ representing the ups and ‘chili’ representing the downs of the relationship. What’s next for you? After 30ty’s success, we’re currently discussing what we could improve before we start planning 30ty +1. In the meantime, Sweet Chili, the track as well as the music video, seem to have caught a lot of people’s attention. We also have a few performances lined up as well as another single and a new album that will be released after a jam-packed Summer.

THE ROAD TO THE

2020 OLYMPICS

We speak to Yazmin Zammit Stevens, a 26 year old weightlifter currently breaking down gender-based stereotypes about weightlifting. She has built an incredibly strong resume in the sport in a short time, breaking over 50 national records. Yazmin won Malta's Sportswoman of the Year Award in 2018 and now aims to achieve her goal to compete in the weightlifting tournament at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. When did you decide to take weightlifting seriously? For as long as I can remember, I trained a sport and stayed fit. In 2016, my friend suggested I join him for a CrossFit class, a fitness class that involved running, gymnastics and weightlifting. I always enjoyed the weightlifting part of the sessions a lot more than the rest. I participated in a weightlifting tournament soon after and the rest is history. A few weeks after the first competition, I decided to start a full time weightlifting programme and make the national team. What does strength mean to you, and why is being strong so important? I love this question, and I feel like this needs to be asked a lot more often. People think ‘strength’ when they see my name, and yes definitely, I am a strong athlete as my sport requires a lot of strength. However, to me, I am a strong athlete not because of how much I can lift, but because of what I am capable of mentally. Being a full time athlete, more specifically, the only full time weightlifter in Malta, is mentally exhausting. For many hours a day I train alone with my coach. My entire life at the moment revolves entirely around lifting weights. Especially before major championships, staying mentally focused and positive is the absolute hardest thing to do. Pushing through every single day, 365 days a year, no matter what… that to me is strength.

It’s hard to keep up with how many times you broke National records. What moment thus far in your weightlifting career stands out? I think not being able to keep count of how many national records I broke is something I am proud of! At the beginning of my career, breaking a national record was my biggest aim, so it’s crazy to see how far I’ve come. I get asked about my favourite moments in this sport all the time and I never know how to answer because every single championship has been incredibly special in its own way. If I had to narrow it down though, up until now it would have to be qualifying and competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia. I had been working on qualifying for 2 years prior to the Games and when I actually saw my name on the final list I was over the moon. Looking ahead, the goal has to be getting to the Olympics in 2020. What does it take to qualify? Qualifying for the Olympics is super tough. In our sport, only 14 athletes in the entire world will be given a place to go to the Games. However, I do not intend on giving up, or being discouraged. I am constantly improving my result with every championship that comes along. I will continue to push in hopes of making the Olympic team. If it happens it happens, and if not, then I will look forward to the next opportunity to prove myself.

A walk through a charming

MALTESE PALAZZO Words by Caroline Tonna Palazzo Falson is an exquisite historic house museum with medieval architecture and an extraordinary collection in the heart of Mdina. The palazzo belonged to Olof Frederick Gollcher, a descendent of a Swedish-Maltese family who made a fortune in Malta in shipping. Olof was an artist, a philanthropist and an art lover, who collected objets d’art, mostly from travels throughout his life. Olof ’s house in Mdina was filled with antique furniture, silver pieces, oriental carpets, paintings, ship models, armoury, rare books, watches, jewellery and many other valuable artefacts. An exceptional artefact that stands out from the rest of the collections is an 18th century decimal dial watch made by a distinguished watchmaker, Robert Robin (1741-1799) in Paris in around 1797. Robin was an engineer with a creative mind and a whole lot of ambition. He belonged to a small circle of great clockmakers and by the end of the 18th century, he greatly improved his instruments for measuring time. He enjoyed the patronage of King Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette, and at the time was producing 12 hour watches and clocks and even inventing highly complex astronomical clocks. Robin proudly signed some of his watches as ‘Robin au Louvre’ or ‘Robin aux Galeries du Louvre’. Following the overthrow of the French monarchy, Robin’s career was not affected; on the contrary, he continued to prosper under the new Revolutionary government, honoured with the appointment

of Horolger du Directoire (1796). A new Republican Calendar was introduced in 1795, whereby the traditional timekeeping was changed to a decimal time system. The day was divided into 10 hours, with each hour subdivided into 100 decimal minutes and each minute again divided into 100 decimal seconds, that is, 100,000 seconds per day. The idea of the decimal period was derived from a proposal that John le Rond D’Alembert had put forward, 35 years before the Revolution. Robin had invented an unusual mechanical feature, which produced fine and accurate timekeeping of 10 hour watches. However, decimal watches were only produced for a short time as this timekeeping system was never widely adopted and in 1804, Napoleon I, abolished it and re-introduced the Gregorian calendar.

This resulted in a few surviving examples of the decimal dial watches, one of which is at Palazzo Falson. The rare and distinctive 18th century 10 hour watch is the creation of Robert Robin, marked with serial number 886 and signed Robin à Paris No.2. It is undoubtedly one of the most valuable pieces in the museum. Palazzo Falson is worth visiting, not only to see this unique watch but also to walk through the charming Maltese palazzo, which displays the wonderful works of art collected by Olof Gollcher. Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, on Villegaignon Street, in Mdina, is open every day, except Mondays, from 10am to 5pm (last entry 4.00pm). Children under 6 years are not permitted, and children between 6 and 12 year enter free of charge with an accompanying adult. Villegaignon Street, Mdina | Tel: 2145 4512 curator@palazzofalson.com

WARTIME STORIES UNEARTHED Relive historic moments at the newly-restored Combined Operations Room Snaking deep beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the grid-like streets of Valletta is a series of interconnected tunnels and secret rooms, covering an area of 28,000 square metres. Although this underground world is much lesser known than the iconic monuments and churches of Malta’s capital, the events that unfolded here were just as important in determining the island’s trajectory, especially during World War II, as the brave battles that were fought above the ground.

As part of the restoration project, the COR has been equipped with lighting, flooring and furniture evocative of the 30s and 40s. The restored underground headquarters will also be installing waxwork figures of two prominent wartime leaders; the Supreme Commander General Dwight Eisenhower and General Sir Bernard Montgomery. In 1943, the two generals joined forces to coordinate and execute the invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky, with the nerve centre for this operation being housed within the underground war rooms in Valletta.

Hewn in the rock in the early stages of the Air Battle for Malta in 1940, as part of this sprawling underground wartime complex, was the Combined Operations Room. The four walls of this room were important witnesses to the writing of history. Despair, hope of world peace, and eventual jubilation were only some of the emotions experienced here as wartime strategists took momentous decisions, updates of fallen enemy war planes crackled through the radio receivers, and plotters hunched over maps diligently marking aircraft movements.

as more peaceful days dawned, the sun set on the Combined Operations Room’s own glorious days, with these once military important headquarters being permanently closed down in 1977.

After playing a critical role during World War II, when the strategically located island of Malta was one of the most heavily bombed places, the Combined Operations Room went on to be used by NATO as a submarine tracking centre in the Suez Crisis of 1956 and again in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. However,

In 2016, The Malta Airport Foundation announced its collaboration with Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna on the restoration of the Combined Operations Room. Given the Malta Airport Foundation’s mission to invest and safeguard Malta’s heritage, the collaboration proved to be a perfect fit.

One of the most striking features of the Combined Operations Room is a 20-metre-wide map dating back to the sixties. Years of neglect and humidity had taken their toll on the map, which was once used by NATO to plot Russian submarines’ movements in the Mediterranean. With the expert touch of a local restorer and conservator, layers of dirt and grime were peeled away from the artefact’s surface to reveal a fully restored map, which adds much historic value to this underground war museum. Three years into the project, the Combined Room is almost ready to welcome its first visitors, allowing them to re-live historic moments and appreciate a nation’s bravery at a time when it was targeted mercilessly by the Axis powers.

Why not do something a little different on vacation this time? With over 200 indoor and outdoor engaging and interactive science exhibits, surely Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Kalkara is the place to be this summer. Take a step outside and admire the breath-taking views of the majestic Grand Harbour, enjoy the Maltese sunshine, all the while having a ball partaking in all the outdoor water exhibits. Search for and marvel at the hidden treasures from the past, at the site of Villa Bighi. The Villa was turned into a naval hospital in 1832, and other structural additions were built by 1903. During the excavation process, Egyptian Stella, from the 12th dynasty was found, which can be seen at the British Museum in London. From the shrapnel scars evident on the outside of the buildings, to the graffiti left behind by the patients of the old hospital, to the original doors of the padded cells in Esplora’s reception, to the historical artefacts in the Cot Lift Exhibition, there are countless reminders that have been left behind, all of which tell a story. Malta was given the nickname “the nurse of the Mediterranean” due to the hard work, dedication and excellent medical care that was provided to the casualties at Bighi Hospital by the Maltese, whenever battles occurred in the Mediterranean Sea.

Crucial to the patients’ recovery was the hospital’s design. It was built on a peninsula, allowing for the circulation of sea air from the Grand Harbour. When walking though the Passage of Time, one will notice a very long and wide hallway, which provided the much-needed ventilation for the wards on either side of it. In fact, it worked. The mortality rate was extremely low, never exceeding 4% of the total casualties admitted. It should also be kept in mind that the casualties received were the worst cases in the squadron, who had already received treatments that didn’t work, from their on-board doctors. The Cot Lift is the impressive structure that rises from the foreshore, up to Esplora. This architectural gem was designed so that patients could easily be lifted into the hospital from the ships. Within the building, one may hear first-hand witness accounts of what it was like working and being a patient at Bighi Hospital. One may also peek through the windows and line up the images, to see what the view would have looked like during the WW2 battles. Following all the exploration, one may enjoy a snack from the varied menu at the café, set in the beautiful surroundings overlooking the noble Fort St Angelo. FORESTA 2000’S NATURAL HABITAT Words by Victor Falzon

Woodland once covered much of the Maltese Islands, until humans arrived 7,500 years ago. The forest was cleared to make space for pasture and farming and the wood used for fire. Today, only two or three small groves of possibly ‘original’ forest remain. In 1995, BirdLife Malta proposed the regrowth of an area of Mediterranean woodland, to commemorate the forthcoming new millennium, and thus, Foresta 2000 came to be.

The site Marfa Ridge may have once been covered in broadleaf woodland, but the original vegetation has long since vanished. Centuries of farming impoverished the soil, fields were abandoned and the land turned to sheep and goat pasture. A garrigue ecosystem developed where bedrock was exposed, while areas with some soil cover became rocky or clay steppe. Through the Foresta 2000 project, many old, crumbling terraces were restored and native trees and shrubs were planted, such as holm oak, Aleppo pine, lentisk, araar, Mediterranean buckthorn, hawthorn, carob, rosemary and olive-leaved germander. Today, they are growing back some of the woodland and

2000 is managed by BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa and PARK.

The habitats Woodland regeneration is the main aim of the Foresta 2000 project, however, several other already existing habitats have been protected and helped in spreading even further. These include maquis, clay steppe, rocky step and garrigue. Pockets of farmland also complement the project, as agricultural fields make up a significant part of the mosaic of the Maltese countryside. GASTRONOMIC GREATNESS AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEF PATRON ROBERT CASSAR

We sat down with award winning Chef Patron Robert Cassar to find out more about Malta’s food culture as well as his passion and steadfast devotion to creating memorable customer experiences at his restaurant Root 81 in Rabat. As Malta’s food culture grows, people are becoming more ‘food-literate’, as it were. What sort of impact has this had on the local restaurant scene?

most stressful in the world. Is that true, in your experience... and if so, does the stress affect the way you work?

In today’s culture, the internet and social media have begun to dominate even more of our lives. With foodie culture featuring so prominently on the internet and social media, the standards for what is expected from restaurants is higher than ever. People are travelling far to find new and exciting flavours and exposing themselves to different cuisines. They can easily compare what they see online or in other countries to what they are being served in Malta. People are becoming more knowledgeable and appreciating the beauty of food. As a result, you'll find that there's a good selection of restaurants with a high standard of food in Malta.

Being a chef patron, I do everything from placing orders to ensuring that the restaurant operates efficiently. So yes, it is very stressful but also extremely rewarding. It’s a tough industry and I obviously dedicate part of my life to my work, however, I am able to balance by family life and my career. Being constantly stressed affects one’s creativity in the kitchen and that is why it is very important for chefs to maintain a balance in their lives if they wish to succeed and have longevity in their career.

It has been argued that there is such a thing as ‘traditional Maltese cuisine’, but it has been overshadowed by a constant influx of foreign influences. What’s your opinion on this? It is true that we do have foreign influences, but I think it is the creativity that wins. I believe that an interesting menu should offer dishes using local ingredients with a traditional Maltese cuisine twist, whilst also offering other dishes, with international influences. We need to work hard to keep Maltese traditions alive in the culinary world. However, adding some foreign influences to the menu make the dishes that much more exciting and allow us to be more creative. The job of a chef is reputed to be among the

You won a number of awards last year and just won the Chef of the Month award in May. What does this mean to you? It’s hard to round it up in one answer. I feel truly appreciative of all the people who believe in me and in what I have to offer. These awards are judged by knowledgeable diners who love to dine out, so being voted for by these people is humbling and overwhelming. The Best Food Award is an award I’ve wanted since the opening of my restaurant, and it shows that patrons really appreciate the taste and quality of our dishes. Winning the Best Chef of the Month competition and placing third in the Best Chef of the Year was super exciting. To have my name alongside previous winners, all of whom are chefs I have always looked up to, is something that I will always be extremely proud of.

THE WINE ESTATE

IN MALTA’S AGRICULTURAL HEARTLAND Established in 1987 and officially opening its doors in 1997, Meridiana Wine Estate is situated in Ta’ Qali, Malta’s agricultural heartland, beneath the walls of the ancient city of Mdina. Meridiana pioneered the production of premium wines in Malta, wines crafted following high-quality production standards and using exclusively locally grown, internationally renowned wine-grape varieties. After lengthy experimentation, Meridiana acquired the 19 hectare site, which previously served as a second world war military airfield. After meticulous preparation, the estate was planted (in 1994 & 1995) with Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon with one aim, to produce premium quality wines with locally grown international grape varieties. Meridiana also cultivates Vermentino grapes on a separate vineyard, which is in closer proximity to the sea. In 2013, one thousand Moscato vines were added at the Ta’ Qali estate to be used for the production of a dessert wine. In addition to the estate grown grapes which are used mainly for its premium range, Meridiana also purchases grapes from carefully selected local farmers, to produce its fast growing Fenici range, a casual yet elegant range of three tasty blends. Meridiana now produces approx. 140,000 bottles of premium wine per year. These include the very popular Isis (Chardonnay), probably the island’s best known quality wine, Melqart (Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot), Nexus (Merlot), Bel (Syrah), Astarte (Vermentino), Celsius Reserve(Cabernet Sauvignon), Baltis (a Passito - a dessert wine made from sun dried Moscato grapes) and the Fenici range, which is composed of a White (a blend of Chardonnay, Vermentino & Viognier), a Rose`(Cabernet Sauvignon and other international red grape varieties) and a Red (a blend of Merlot, Cabernet & Syrah). All 10 labels produced by Meridiana have DOK classification, the highest quality of local wines. Almost all the annual produce is sold locally, with very limited quantities going to select niche markets such as Japan, Switzerland and Belgium, and to a few private clients in Europe, the US, Australia and Asia. Local distribution is handled by S Rausi Trading of Stadium Street, Gzira, who may be contacted on info@srausi.com Meridiana Wine Estate is also open for winery show arounds and wine tastings. A hidden gem in the Valley

Urban Valley Resort and Spa is a four-star resort located in the heart of Wied Ghollieqa, a unique natural reserve in the centre of Malta. We speak to General Manager Shawn Muscat for some insight into what makes Urban Valley so special‌

How does Urban Valley Resort differ from other accommodation options in Malta? What should guests expect? Undoubtedly, the prime forte of our resort is its unique setting, which offers a sense of tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It can be felt from the moment one approaches the resort as its completely surrounded by a valley, making it the only hotel on the island that is not located in an urban setting or by the sea. Urban Valley is just 10 minutes away from the capital of Valletta and a two-minute walk from the nearest bus stop. The resort offers just the right setting for outdoor seasonal venues, with its beautiful surrounding landscape and trees. The entire resort is finished to the highest of standards and also caters for persons with limited mobility. Also on site are Viento, the Gin and Rum bar and TRI. The former is set by the pool, with a tapas menu. On the other hand, TRI offers a vast menu, including healthy salad options and snacks.

up with conference or meeting spaces, according to their requirements. A number of business services are offered by the resort including the possibility of hiring an office assistant for the event. The business centre, which is earmarked to be completed by August 2019, targets leisure groups and MICE. These newly built premises are comprised of three fully functional floors. The ground floor houses 80 people and can be partitioned. The first floor accommodates 210 people in a theatre setting, and the second consists of five breakout rooms, which can easily be opened up into one large open space to accommodate the client. Do you have any plans for Urban Valley Resort going forward?

What business amenities do you offer and who would benefit from them?

The conference centre opening in August 2019 is the next big milestone for Urban Valley. Following that is the refurbishment of the Valley itself. Currently, there are works in progress to make it more accessible for weddings and outdoor events. By June 2019, the archery range will be up and running.

Corporate clients, business groups and local companies are always looking for new venues, which would provide them with the latest technologies and amenities on the market. This would give them greater flexibility in setting

We will soon be organising walking trails, cooking lessons and food tastings. The green house project, on the other hand, will focus on maximising the use of land by planting more herbs, which will be utilised at the resort itself. OH MY MALTA

Sensar-tional Sensara Malta: real estate brokers, who offer a large selection of properties throughout the island, acting as an intermediary for clients, whether buying, selling or renting. We spoke with owner and founder Janice Azzopardi, for some exclusive insight into the ever-evolving property market in Malta.

Sensara Malta bills itself as a traditional “1%” broker. What does your business involve? I started Sensara Malta five years ago and we now have 20 employees. We operate as intermediaries when buying, selling or renting property. We pride ourselves on the fact that Sensara Malta strictly abides by the law that you can only demand a 1% fee from a client. We provide free valuations and don’t oblige anyone to sell through us when we value their property. It is their property after all, and their property is their life’s investment. We only get our 1% commission fee if they choose to sell through us.

money. The general public viewed estate agents as money suckers and I don’t want money suckers working for me. I wanted to build trust and ensure that people knew that Sensara Malta safeguards them. What do you think is behind the big boom in the property market?

How does Sensara differ from other agencies?

The property market really opened up in 2013, when there was a change in government. There was a rise in people taking out buy-to-let loans and paying back said loans from the income they received through renting out their properties. Developers weren’t too happy with this and thus, they increased their prices.

Sensara Malta is not here to compete. We exist to give our customers a different kind of service than that of other estate agents. I founded my company because I didn’t like the way people saw intermediaries – as people only out to make

In turn, land owners and construction companies raised their prices, too. It’s a chain – everything began to increase. One must acknowledge that developers had little choice but to increase their prices. OH MY MALTA 69 69

WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN MALTA Malta has long been a hotspot for tourists, expats and investors. Countless British tourists in the late 60’s evolved into expats, who began renting and buying property all over the islands, from Marsascala to Mellieha and even as far as Gozo. British structures and discipline instilled during British rule, as well as the climate, cultural heritage and laid-back Mediterranean culture first attracted these expats and investors. Expats and investors from all over Europe began seeing Malta as a suitable and attractive base and home. Attractive tax and corporate structures, as well as skilled and affordable human resources led to the island becoming a world-renowned centre for financial services, technology, aviation, online gaming and more. Malta’s prime geographic location, as well as the access to the European Union, as one of its 27 member states, has helped foster an environment for ubiquitous investment opportunities, making the Maltese islands an attractive business hub

and tourist destination. The Maltese property market too has benefited from the chain of events that occurred following the post war era, with distinctive architectural styles, which have kept it alive and interesting. Malta’s limited size has always played a role in keeping the property market in appreciating mode, which in turn, has attracted investment in the real estate sector from local and foreign investors alike. In general, the Maltese have always preferred to own their own property, rather than rent. Furthermore, families and businesses have often invested their savings into property, believing that investing in brick and mortar is a safer bet. Lastly, the rental market has seen exceptional growth across all sectors, primarily due to various international operations setting up in Malta. This has had a positive impact on rental prices and returns, hence making both residential and commercial property in Malta all the more interesting.

Who is Belair Property? Belair property has been operating since 1967, starting off as a family business. Today, it is recognised as one of the leading players in the local Real Estate industry. Their core belief, centre to everything they do, is that of developing and maintaining relationships, which in one way or another, help the team expand organically and successfully, to a team of over 70 consultants, spread over six offices in strategic localities around the island. Each office manager is qualified and experienced to lead their team in a manner that fits well within the core beliefs of the group, while maintaining the family environment from which it all came to be.

Why trust them? Be it a first home that needs to be carefully planned to fit one’s needs or simply an investment decision, it can have a positive impact on one’s life as well as negative repercussions if it is not thought through properly. Despite the company’s development and growth over the years, Belair has remained sensitive to every scenario and its management and team have worked hard to always maintain the responsible approach and commitment to their clients, including when they feel a particular property or investment were not right for their client at that time. Though a difficult decision, it usually proved to be the right one. This, in turn, generally led to the client appreciating their advice and integrity and turning out to be a loyal and long-term client and friend, who not only provided repeat business but also priceless recommendations.

FOSTERING DIGITAL INNOVATION

www.mdia.gov.mt

MALTA:

FROM BLOCKCHAIN ISLAND

TO AI NATION

2018 was the year Malta cemented itself as The Blockchain Island with the implementation of three laws; the Malta Digital Innovation Authority Act, the Innovative Technology Arrangements and Services Act and Virtual Financial Assets Act. The MDIA Act deals with the setting up of the Malta Innovation Digital Authority, the ITAS Act deals with the technology arrangements and services such as that of a systems auditor and technical administrator and the VFA Act deals with virtual financial assets. These three acts were approved by Parliament last year, and are the world’s first ever Distributed Ledger Technology legislations. The Blockchain Acts have formed a regulatory framework, which provides legal certainty to entrepreneurs, in such a way as to not hinder the development of the industry. The role of the Authority is to harmonise practices, promote the use of innovative technology, promote transparency and auditability and promote legal certainty. Malta has regularised DLT through its legal framework. Cryptocurrency and Blockchain technology are completely separate from one another. Blockchain is the plat-

form that brings cryptocurrencies into play; however, licenses are issued to Virtual Financial Assets operators through the MFSA. MDIA supports the MFSA by providing certification of the actual software or through an audit/review by a Systems Auditor accredited with MDIA. 2018 was the blockchain year, what is the next step for Malta? Since the success Malta has been experiencing ever since it established itself as the Blockchain Island, the next step is to explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a new economic niche. The Maltese Government intends to follow the same steps it did when passing the DLT laws, which has allowed Malta to lead the blockchain revolution. A task force has been set up to steer its strategy on Artificial Intelligence and devise a holistic approach towards the industry and further bring about economic growth within the field of digital innovation in Malta. The digital aspect is like a chain, you cannot explore one aspect while leaving others behind. What the MDIA started is a snowball effect, leading to an ever-evolving process. Malta is one of the 1st blockchain islands. What are the future challenges? Being a leader in the uptake of new emerging technologies is by merit of the talented brains and visionaries that Malta fostered over the years. Malta took a proactive approach by understanding the benefits of utlising such technologies and creating a hollistic legal framework to allow these technologies and businesses to flourish. Investing and sustaining human resources across the industries is of utmost importance and that is what Malta intends to keep doing. This will be achieved by investing in scholarships and indoctrinating different areas and sectors. Our ICT infrastructure is resilient, and thanks to our thriving economy and a strong ecosystem, Malta is a hub for digital technological innovation, which will provide different challenges in terms of finding the skills and the talent required to uphold with the current technological advancements. Many companies that have already expressed their interest are now residing in Malta and are willing to share their expertise and expert teams. Facing a learning curve and all the future challenges that this industry will bring, will not only push Malta to become more economically stable but also keep it at the forefront of the industry.

MEET THE BLOCKCHAIN COMPANY SET TO REVOLUTIONISE THE ROLE OF THE 12TH MAN The role of football fans worldwide is set to change with the onset of a Blockchain-based app that will bring supporters closer than they’ve ever been to big clubs Words by Liam Carter

another big football club set to be expected in the coming months.

Housed in the new 2,000 sqm Blockchain campus in Gzira, Socios is an avant-garde Blockchain-based venture set to revolutionise the role of football fans worldwide.

“We are offering football clubs a solution to bring fans closer to the club irrelevant of your location,” Dreyfus said.

We spoke with Alexandre Dreyfus CEO of Chiliz and Socios.com, who elaborated on the inner workings of the app. “Socios.com is a new app dedicated to football fans, where you acquire voting rights to influence the clubs you love.” The parent company, Chiliz, has already managed to strike partnership deals with top-flight football clubs such as Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and West Ham United, with

Asked as to how voting rights would be acquired and subsequently spent, the CEO pointed out that users of Socios will earn utility tokens under the virtual native currency of the platform, Chiliz or $CHZ. “Football clubs that join socios.com generate a supply of fan tokens which are blockchain-secured digital assets,” he said. Fan tokens earn users the right to vote on club matters and the more tokens you own the more influence you have.”

Dreyfus explained that these fan tokens can be later spent on club-run polls such as those asking the fans about next year’s jersey colour or which marquee signing they should secure next. Quizzed on how users can obtain these fan tokens, he said that this will be announced at a later date, possibly in the summer months. Dreyfus said he moved the company to Malta because the island provided a solid foundation for the blockchain industry by being one of the first countries globally to provide legislation for this emerging technology.
