AUGUST 2023

In the first week of July, the earth smashed records for the hottest days ever recorded. The island is know for its warm climate with its surplus of heat and sun, and the current heatwave is seeing temperatures soaring above 40 Celsius. Heat alone can be exhausting especially if you come from a very different climate and didn’t have time to adapt, or a Maltese friend to show you the ropes.

But keep calm, there's nothing really to worry about if you are prepared and know a few tricks.

Start your sightseeing as early in the morning as you can to avoid getting baked in the sun or sweating in long queues.

As the day progresses, have a break by indulging in some local cuisine at one of the many air-conditioned eateries or a midday siesta rest back at your hotel, or rather, make your way to one of Malta or Gozo’s picturesque beaches for a refreshing dip in the clear waters.

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat as big as you can find. Be sure you are hydrating before, during and after exposing yourself to these soaring summer temperatures. Stay safe and take it easy!

We couldn't be happier to welcome you home!

We recognise the importance of the growing trend of eco-sustainability and responsible travel. In line with this, we’re currently engaged in discussions with three eco-label organizations that will certify our hotels and accommodations in Malta to ensure their ecological sustainability.

Additionally, we’re encouraging and supporting local establishments in investing in renewable energies. This includes initiatives such as utilizing second-class water, which involves analyzing water catchment and usage, as well as investing in solar panels to harness solar power and energy.

We also recognise the significance of addressing environmental concerns in various aspects, such as understanding the environmental impact of laundry processes. It’s through these small changes that we can collectively make a significant difference.

In a world that is changing everyday we must also embrace the importance of digital tourism. This is a growing area and we’re collaborating with local stakeholders to embrace its potential.

One example is the development of virtual assistants, which can enhance the visitor experience if they’re walking in Valletta. For instance, through a mobile app, individuals can assess information about places of interest and navigate the city without the need for a guide.

This is just one aspect of digital tourism that we are focusing on. In this regard, we are encouraging hotels to be up to date with their websites to drive more business towards these establishments.

The private setor plays a vital role in this regard. From a government point of view, we are exploring the utilization of AI for monitoring tourism inflows and other relevant data.

This shall be an approach that provides us with valuable insights to aid in planning and making informed decisions for the future of the tourism industry in Malta.

This exhibition will highlight the importance of history's largest wartime amphibious operation ever attempted. Focusing of course on Malta's pivotal role in it. The exhibition will recall how Malta's Lascaris War Rooms housed the massive underground military complex, from where this remarkable operation was launched, as directed by the US Allied Supreme Commander General Dwight Eisenhower. Also how Malta's own 231st Infantry Brigade, formed by some of the British Regular Infantry Battalion's defending Malta during its siege in WW2, also took part in the landings as part of the Eighth Army.

Villa Frere was created by British diplomat, poet, scholar, and philanthropist John Hookham Frere, after the demise of his wife in 1831, as a means of comfort for his sadness. From this garden, which enjoyed wide-open views spanning from Mdina to Valletta, he could also look out at the Msida Bastion Cemetery, where his wife reposed. Villa Frere became a sanctuary for numerous academics, most famously Mikiel Anton Vassalli who reportedly discussed with Frere how to establish Maltese as a written and taught language. The place became a prominent attraction, both to locals and foreigners. For more information visit www.heritagemalta.com

Ta’ Bistra Catacombs will be welcoming the general public every last Sunday of the month. Located half way between the ancient town of Melite and the once-important harbour of Salina, Ta’ Bistra Catacombs are, so far, the largest set of tombs and catacombs beyond the confines of the ancient city of the island. They were first recorded in the late 1800s but were only investigated in 1933 by Captain Charles Zammit, before part of the site was covered over by a new road leading down to Burmarrad. Further studies in 2004, 2013, and 2014, have brought the site back to life with new discoveries and hence, new interpretations.Get your tickets from heritagemalta.mt

THE FEAST OF SANTA MARIJA

the Maltese to survive. In fact, the tanker was singled out from the start and faced vicious attacks and was found destroyed some kilometres off of Malta. The ship was bombed and holed, a series of fires were started and her boilers blew up and engines failed.

With their hope waning, the Maltese called on their faith and prayed, desperately, to Santa Marija for a miracle.

In spite of the attacks, the tanker did not sink and on 15 August, 1942, on the feast of Santa Marija, the Ohio, towed by two destroyers, Ledbury and Penn and a minesweeper, Rye, entered the Grand Harbour. As it entered, crowds cheered, waved British and American flags and sang along to Rule Britannia. Ohio discharged her cargo and as soon as the 10,000 tonnes of fuel oil and kerosene were extracted from the destroyed hull, the Ohio sank and rested on the seabed.

Santa Marija, also known as the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady is one of the most popular feasts on the islands, as it’s celebrated in over eight different towns and villages, including Għaxaq, Gudja, Attard, Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi, Birkirkara and Victoria in Gozo. Why are the celebrations for Santa Marija so widespread?

In essence, Santa Marija is the celebration of a miracle. Here’s why:

During World War II, the Maltese population was saved from starvation and provided with enough supplies to sustain the islands due to a food convoy, which arrived during the week of the feast day. The arrival of the convoy is seen by many to have been a great turning point of the

war in the Mediterranean, as otherwise, the Maltese would have had no alternative but to surrender.

In August 1942, Operation Pedestal was mounted from the UK, with the aim of relieving Malta. The convoy was intercepted by the Axis, who deployed no less than 20 submarines, 19 motor torpedo boats and over 850 aircraft. They faced a gruelling five-day ordeal, which saw nine out of 14 merchant ships succumbing to the attacks.

Four of the ships that survived reached Malta between the 13 and 14 of August. However, there was no sign of the tanker named Ohio, which was filled with oil, fuel and kerosene supplies, which were vital for

Believing that a miracle had occured, the ships became known as the convoy of Santa Marija and the devotion of the population to Santa Marija and the feast of her Assumption, became even more acute.

While the story is one that took place many years ago, celebrations of the historical feast became more and more prominent, with fireworks dominating the night skies, and religious processions, food stalls, horse races, bands and parades taking over the streets of many villages. Many Maltese families adorn their homes and churches are illuminated with lights, inside and out.

The impressive convoy is recorded in Malta’s National War Museum, where many items are on display, including photos of the 14 ships, a plan showing the route and the locations where the ships were sunk and the helm and nameboard of Ohio.

Fall in love with summer gozoin

A summer getaway on the island of Gozo is about exhilaration, celebrations and the Mediterranean outdoor life. Take note of these tips about some of the things to do throughout your August stay in Gozo.

Whilst in Gozo, make sure you go on a general tour of the island, as this will ensure you have visited key sights and highlights such as Ġgantija Temples, the Citadel, Ta’ Pinu Shrine, and Dwerja. There are plenty of things to do in summeer on the island of Gozo and there is no shortage of historic and cultural places to visit. Each comes with its own story or legend. You might want to consider touring with the island with a guide. Hop-on, hop-off buses, Tuktuks, jeep safaris, and Segway tours are also exciting ways to experience the island.

Gozo’s summer life is about never-ending days where lingering at the beach and the sea plays a big part. Take time to explore the beaches and coast, but it’s imperative to indulge in a swim in the blue seas. But that’s the minimum for a beach holiday, because snorkelling and beach sports are also on the cards. If you crave thrills, spend an afternoon paddle boarding or kayaking. Your beach holiday can also arouse the call of the sea. Take a boat trip and join coastal tours.

Some say you’ve never seen the world if you travel and never dive. With over 50 dive sites waiting to be explored, Gozo is a diving. So if you’ve never considered diving, maybe it’s time to take the plunge. There are many diving schools in Gozo. Diving is an activity that can even be undertaken by older children and teens,

thus making it a unique activity that a family can experience.

In Gozo, summertime is party time. The villages’ feasts provide entertainment all through the summer months. This, combined with an array of concerts, exhibitions and festivals, ensures that there

20 OH MY MALTA

is always some event to experience on the island.

Here are the main events happening in Gozo throughout August:

8 – 10: St Laurence’s Festa, San Lawrenz

17 – 20: Santa Marija Festa, Żebbuġ

23: Tisbit, Villa Rundle, Victoria.

24 - 27: Our Lady of Loreto Festa, Għajnsielem

You might not be an Instagram influencer, even though Gozo’s a favourite among those! But make sure that you take lots of photos while on the island. A summer vacation on the island is about vivid pictures with dazzling blue skies during the day and luminous fireworks at night. The Gozo holiday album can be nothing but a flamboyant and lyrical memory.

GOZO'S MOST BREATHTAKING BEACHES

The alluring island of Gozo is home to a wealth of pristine natural beauty, with fine beaches decorating its coastline. From the sun-kissed golden-red sands to the deep blue oceans, the beaches of Gozo offer a gateway to a tranquil world with breathtaking vistas. These are the lovely island’s finest six beaches, in our opinion of course.

ĦONDOQ BAY

Hondoq Bay provides an idyllic hideaway to those seeking respite amidst the splendours of nature. It is tucked away close to the charming town of Qala. With its small, fine-grained beach and clear waters, it offers an inviting backdrop for leisure and relaxation. Take a refreshing swim, enjoy the sun’s warmth, or take a leisurely stroll around the adjacent cliffs.

DWEJRA BAY, GOZO

Discover the charm of Dwejra Bay in Gozo, a mesmerising location distinguished by its striking coastline formations and the breathtaking sight of the sea rushing over the cliffs. This magical location has a hint of enchantment and offers guests a wide range of unforgettable experiences. Within the bounds of Dwejra lies a place of historical significance—the legendary Fungus Rock, locally known as "Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral" or General's Rock. It was initially believed that a rare parasitic flowering plant with remarkable medicinal properties grew on Fungus Rock. To safeguard this extraordinary resource, the rock was vigilantly protected during the era of the Knights of Malta. Severe penalties, including death or a life condemned to rowing the Knights' galleys, awaited those who dared to pilfer the invaluable crop. Dwejra Bay in Gozo beckons adventurers with its blend of natural wonders and rich history, inviting you to immerse yourself in its breathtaking landscapes.

SAN BLAS BAY

San Blas Bay is a lovely bay adjacent to Nadur which attracts visitors as well as residents. Given that it is surrounded by rolling hills and rich countryside, San Blas Bay presents a secluded getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Swim in the clear waters, snorkel to witness the colourful marine life, or simply unwind and enjoy the tranquilly of this undiscovered paradise.

THE GĦASRI VALLEY, GOZO

Għasri Valley offers an idyllic setting for a leisurely country walk or a refreshing bike ride. This valley showcases a remarkable landscape, characterized by deep gorge-like formations, adorned with towering cliffs sculpted from the Lower Coralline Limestone and the Globerigerina Limestone above. As you meander through the valley, you'll encounter an abundance of prickly pear cacti and caper plants, thriving amidst the dry stone walls that dot the area.

As it starts from the peaceful Ta' Dbieġi Hill, the valley meanders past the lovely village of l-Għasri, following a route through the villages of iż-Żebbuġ and Ta' Ġurdan, before coming to an end at the sea surrounded by breathtaking rocks. Despite appearing remote, the valley reveals a hidden gem at its end: a little, isolated pebbly bay where you may have a peaceful bathe in the Mediterranean Sea's pristine waters.

RAMLA BAY

Ramla Bay, one of Gozo’s most renowned beauties, tends to draw tourists in droves during the summertime. Its golden-red sand shimmers in the sunlight and stands out sharply against the Mediterranean Sea’s turquoise seas.

MARSALFORN BAY

Marsalforn Bay, which is located on the northern shore of Gozo, attracts visitors with its tranquil surroundings and vibrant atmosphere. The rocky portion of the bay as well as the sandy beach are both enjoyable for adventurers and sunbathers. Enjoy delicious meals at the restaurants on the water, leisurely strolls down the seaside promenade and the vibrant fishing boats that line the shore.

THE MESMERISING BLUE LAGOON OF COMINO

The Blue Lagoon, one of the most striking natural beauties in the area, is located on the picturesque island of Comino in the Maltese archipelago. Visitors from all over the world have been enthralled by the Blue Lagoon's pristine beauty, golden sand beaches, and blue seas. This article discusses the captivating Blue Lagoon, which has come to be recognised as a magnificent haven, as well as the appeal of the island of Comino.

24 OH MY MALTA

The smallest populated island in the Maltese archipelago, Comino, is situated between Malta and Gozo, its sister island. With only three-square kilometres in size, it is a quiet retreat for both beachgoers and wildlife lovers. The Blue Lagoon, though, is what really steals the show. The shallow, sand-covered seabed and sunlight's reflection are to blame for the lagoon's eye-catching blue colouring.

This unspoiled treasure is frequently praised as one of the most gorgeous bathing locations in the Mediterranean, drawing travellers looking to luxuriate in its crystal-clear waters and take in its breathtaking surroundings. St. Mary's Tower, one of the island's well-known structures, was used as a filming site for "The Count of Monte Cristo" in 2002. Since the Blue Lagoon is well-liked, it may get busy during the busiest travel times, so it's best to schedule your visit carefully.

However, the Blue Lagoon on Comino preserves a sense of tranquilly because of its remote position and restricted access, especially during the week and offseason. Away from the rush of daily life, visitors may experience what it feels like to be in a hidden paradise. Comino's unspoilt appeal is further enhanced by the lack of extensive construction or motorised transportation, which enables tourists to enjoy nature in its pristine state.

Comino provides a variety of leisure pursuits for explorers and adventurers outside the Blue Lagoon. Hikers and nature lovers are drawn to the island's craggy shoreline as its paths lead to secluded coves, dizzying clifftops, and spectacular panoramic vistas. The lagoon's crystal-clear waters, which are teeming with vibrant marine life and interesting undersea structures, lure divers and snorkelers. A tour of the island by boat is a must-do activity for tourists who want to see Comino's impressive cliffs, sea caves, and remote beaches, which are unreachable by land. The Maltese government has taken action to safeguard this natural gem since it is aware of the Blue Lagoon's ecological significance and Comino's delicate environment. To protect the Blue Lagoon's water quality and unspoiled ecosystem, access is strictly limited, with a daily visiting restriction. Visitors are urged to follow marked trails, show care for the island's nature and animals, and not leave any trash behind. The Blue Lagoon and Comino's pristine beauty will be preserved thanks to these conservation

initiatives for future generations to enjoy.

Allocate at least two hours for the boat ride to Comino. Buses from several areas in Malta can take you to the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal, while buses from Gozo may take you to the Mgarr Ferry Terminal. You may buy a return ticket for €10 from Mgarr (Gozo) or €13 from Cirkewwa (Malta) once you get at the boat station. If you like, you can take your own vehicle to the Comino Ferry Terminal in Marfa. Boat trips are another practical choice, giving features like restrooms, sundecks, and onboard food and beverages.

To get the most out of your trip to the Blue Lagoon, attempt to get there between 8 and 9 AM to avoid the crowds, especially during the busy months of July and August. Weekdays are preferred to weekends since more residents and visitors visit the lagoon throughout the week. The boat ride to the island is gorgeous, offering many opportunity for Instagram-worthy photos with its lovely cliffs and magnificent blue and turquoise waters. There are still private areas on the beach even if the Blue Lagoon draws a lot of tourists.

Although there are occasional sand spots among the primarily stony beach, it's not impossible to locate a pleasant place to unwind. The best part of visiting the Blue Lagoon is swimming in and enjoying the pristine waters. The colourful marine life and underwater delights will please be snorkelling and diving aficionados.

The stunning appeal of Malta's natural beauties is exemplified by the Blue Lagoon and the alluring island of Comino. The Blue Lagoon offers a haven for people seeking peace and unspoilt beauty with its mesmerising blue seas, isolated beaches, and untouched charm. Adventurers are drawn to Comino by its rocky coastline, trekking paths, and underwater wonders to discover its undiscovered gems. It is apparent why this tiny piece of paradise has attracted attention from all over the world as tourists immerse themselves in the Blue Lagoon's peace and marvel at Comino's untamed charm. The Blue Lagoon and Comino will forever be emblems of Malta's breathtakingly natural beauty and continue to enthral tourists. For an outstanding experience in the Blue Lagoon, plan your vacation in advance and think about going during less busy periods, whether you decide to travel to Comino by ferry or pick a boat excursion.

BIRŻEBBUĠA EXPLORING

BIRŻEBBUĠA

Located southeast of the country's capital, Birżebbuġa is a vibrant village in Malta's southeast, offering a panoramic view of the Marsaxlokk Bay. The town's name is derived from the Arabic word for ‘olive’. This charming village, which has a population of around 10,000 people, has become very popular with both tourists and locals alike due to its fascinating archaeological sites, such as Ghar Dalam and Borg in-Nadur, as well as its appealing sandy coastline. The symbolism of the olive can also be seen in the village's coat of arms, which features a blue chevron and an olive branch on a white background.

The layout of the town is centred around Pretty Bay, which paved the way for the development of a number of coastal amenities along with stores, cafes, restaurants, a hotel, and other tourist attractions. Visitors to Pretty Bay can take advantage of a well-liked pavilion and a children's playing area, which are encircled by a promenade that runs the length of the sandy beach. St. George's Bay, which lies nearby and has a rocky shoreline, is popular for sunbathing, snorkelling, sailing, and fishing. The beach is also well-known for the ancient cart ruts that run over its sandy expanse.

Birżebbuġa's illustrious history may be traced back to the Phoenician era, when maritime tradesmen established their foothold and built a Temple, recognising its strategic location as the first point of contact while sailing from the East. Numerous tombs of these seamen have also been found nearby during archaeological digs. The ruins of a classic Roman villa may still be seen on the raised hill of Kaccaturo, which looks out across Ghar Dalam. The harbour retained significance throughout the ages, drawing Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs. Notably, when the Turkish invaders arrived there, it played a significant role in the Great Siege in 1565. The harbour housed British military flying boats and battleships during the 20th century. It still has a considerable economic impact today owing to the Freeport, which makes it possible to handle a staggering number of cargo ships and containers every day.

Through an extensive array of centuries-old structures, Birżebbuġa highlights its historical past as it offers a window into the island's residents' daily lives during various times of governance. A few noteworthy buildings are

the Farretti Coastal Battery, the mediaeval entrenchments at Birżebbuġa, and additional British-built fortifications. Birżebbuġa had additional development in terms of military use throughout the British era. The Royal Air Force was given two bases and further defences were built. The first permanent airstrip on the island was RAF Hal Far, which was constructed in 1929. The Malta Freeport, a global commercial port, took the role of the second airbase, RAF Kalafrana, in 1988. The port has prospered and expanded over time to become one of the biggest in the Mediterranean Sea, serving a sizable amount of marine traffic. As a result, this old fishing community changed course and evolved into a thriving beachfront resort city.

Birżebbuġa, like many other towns in Malta, has an abundance of chapels and churches. We recommend that you visit this charming village during the first weekend in August, which falls on the feast of St. Peter in Chains for an unforgettable experience. Brass bands from various clubs’ march through the streets during this time, capturing the vivacious spirit of a typical Maltese village festival and bringing the town to life. The modest church of Our Lady of Sorrows initially served as the parish until the larger church was dedicated for worship in 1938. Birżebbuġa obtained the status of a separate parish from Zejtun in 1913.

Several clubs, such as a fishermen's club, a regatta club, a boċċi club (a traditional metalball game) and many music groups, contribute to the town's community life. Such connections provide as evidence of the traditional Maltese activities in Birżebbuġa’s lasting social footprint. We guarantee that a trip to Birżebbuġa will surely be eventful and memorable!

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN BIRŻEBBUĠA

PRETTY BAY

Both locals and tourists adore this sandy beach due to its stunning vistas and pure, turquoise seas that it is famously known for. It is considered as a great location for swimming and snorkelling due to its long stretch of golden sand and gradual descent into the ocean, but those looking for more daring water sports will also find a variety of thrilling alternatives available. Visitors won't have to travel too far for refreshments because various amenities are conveniently close to its promenade. Pretty Bay delivers a lovely seaside experience for everyone and is unquestionably worthwhile to visit due to its attractiveness.

GĦAR DALAM

Nearby Birżebbuġa, there is a phreatic tube and cave famously known as ‘Għar Dalam’. This cave, which is 144 metres long, served as a cul-de-sac. Its depths have been found to include the bones of extinct animal species that were trapped and killed in Malta towards the end of the Last Glacial Maximum. Dwarf elephants, hippopotamuses, huge swans, deer, and bear bones have also been discovered in the cave. Furthermore, the oldest evidence of human habitation in Malta, going back 7,400 years, was also found near Għar Dalam.

GĦAR IR-RIĦ

Għar ir-Riħ is a secluded cave close to Fishman's Cave and the historical location Ghar Hassan, making it the perfect destination for intrepid travellers and those looking for undiscovered treasures. Visitors can find a variety of over time-developed rock formations inside. Another hole near the cave's exit offers breathtakingly views of the ocean. It is essential to remember that these areas call for vigilance and the required safety precautions as they can be dangerous.

BORĠ IN-NADUR

Borġ in-Nadur is an archaeological site located in broad pastures with a view of St. George's Bay. It comprises Malta's oldest fortress as well as the ruins of a Bronze Age settlement and a megalithic temple from the Tarxien era. The location is close to silos, a Roman villa called Ta' Kaċċatura, cart ruts from the Bronze Age, and the Saint George Redoubt, which was constructed much later. For just 6.50 euros, visitors may get a combination ticket that allows them to visit both Għar Dalam and Borġ in-Nadur.

DRYING AND PRESERVING MALTESE SUN-DRIED TOMATOES

The quintessential foods that come to my mind with the word Mediterranean are: olives, capers and sundried tomatoes. Finally, it’s time to share the sundried tomatoes with all of you! We met up with the most renowned tomato growers of the island, Joseph and Charles Muscat of 'Malta Sunripe' to show us how they grow and prepare the tomatoes. The secret to making the best possible sundried tomatoes comes down to the timing with every single step. Beginning with the month when the tomatoes are planted outside in

the bush. They plant the tomato bushes in rows, or in tunnels as Joseph explained. The tomatoes grow underneath the leaves more so than facing the sun so as not to get overly burned beneath the direct sun. Joseph lifted up a bushel of tomatoes and I couldn’t believe how many were hiding beneath the leaves! It was like a treasure trove of gorgeous, red tomatoes hiding in secret until it was their time to make their public debut!

30 OH MY
MALTA
Words by Emily A. Francis

The next steps again have to do with the exact timing of the correct window in which the tomatoes are perfectly red and ripe and ready to be harvested and laid out beneath the sun. The beautiful, bright red Roma tomatoes are what they use to create the sweetest and most flavourful sundried tomatoes possible. Once they harvest the tomatoes from the bushes, they wash each tomato only with water and then put them through a small conveyer belt that slices each tomato one by one horizontally. From there, the sliced tomatoes are laid out by hand side by side and open-faced. Once the freshly sliced side of the tomatoes are laying facing up toward the sun, they are sprinkled heavily with sea salt. The sea salt keeps the tomatoes protected from the elements as they dry.

Everything they do is according to the weather and this year’s harvest was absolutely perfect. The days that the tomatoes were drying under the sun were the hottest days of this entire year. This was the week when the sun was shining directly down and no morning dew was present during any of the days that the tomatoes were outside drying. This is key because the drying process is to remove all of the water from the tomatoes and even something as simple as morning dew adds that moisture back in and will disrupt the process. The farmers prepare the tomatoes and then stand back and let the sun do its magic, all the while the whole family is praying hard for a perfect week of weather for these to turn out right. It’s a hands-off approach, yet at the same time, keeping a very close watch on the tomatoes as they dry. For four days, the tomatoes sunbathe and dry to perfection. It is interesting to note that no nutritional benefits

are lost with the drying of the tomatoes since it’s only the removal of the water and nothing else between fresh tomatoes and dried. Only the farmers would be able to predict with such precision which days to lay the tomatoes out. They know the weather much better than any meteorologist I’ve ever seen! This year Jo and Charles and all the Muskat family hit it out of the park on timing and precision.

Once the tomatoes have dried successfully it now becomes time to prepare them for market. We visited Joseph’s wife, Lucy-Anne in the kitchen of Malta Sunripe, where we got to see everyone putting the tomatoes into each jar. They stuff the tomatoes to the very top. From there, the only thing added is vegetable oil. Then they vacuum seal the top of the jar and wash the jar before labeling each one. And voila…the sundried tomatoes at Malta Sunripe are absolute perfection; fresh, ripe and ready to be sold now! Add it in with one of

their incredible hampers as a gift or take some home for yourself.

Sundried tomatoes are wonderful to add to salads, on toast or fresh bread. They are fantastic in pasta dishes, in a wrap or a F’tira… the opportunities for adding this flavour to your dish are endless! Do yourself a favour and try Malta Sunripe’s little jewels of heaven in a jar and find out why this year’s harvest was timed and grown to perfection! *Malta Sunripe products are made from fresh, handpicked and locally grown produce from the village of Mġarr. AUGUST RESTAURANT GUIDE

I am from the United States and where I come from there are some tried and true staples when it comes to breakfast. Breakfast happens to be my favourite meal of the day and I will take you on a tourist's delight of the places I have found that hit closer to home than the standard (and fantastic) pastizzi or ftira sandwiches. If I were to bring a friend from back home out for breakfast these are the places I would choose. With this in mind, I offer them to you:

LULU CAFÉ

This little bistro in the heart of Swieqi sits just across from Greens so there might be some competition between them, but there is only one Lulu café and when it comes to a wonderful breakfast experience, I cannot leave this one behind. They have their menu categorised by savoury and sweet. Their savoury choices include the eggs benny’s and their variations and items like the lavender walnut scone (yum!), avocado toast or kale and goat cheese omelet. On the sweet side of their menu resides the best French toast hands down I have had on the island in my three years of always looking for the best breakfast places to go: French toast made from thickly sliced brioche bread with balsamic glazed figs and mascarpone topped with sprinkles of peanut brittle. Other sweet items from the menu include a pancake stack (which my children always order so I can tell you that they come with side dishes of syrup and white chocolate to drizzle on top), a yogurt bowl and more options. When it comes to breakfast, this is absolutely one of my top picks.

32 OH MY MALTA
Triq il Uqija, Is-Swieqi, Malta Words by Emily A. Francis

We finally have a bagel shop here in Malta and it sits in the heart of the island in Valletta! You can get these specialty items delivered or you can go hang out and enjoy a New York style bagel jazzed up with a Mediterranean twist (such as this week's bagel of the week served with gamon, salted ricotta and honey mustard dressing) and an array of specialty coffee. I have always loved bagels and I have missed having a simple bagel with cream cheese or with smoked salmon (both of which you can get here). So, get to the best and only bagel place on the island and see what all the fuss is about!

This is no American diner. This is French cuisine and I am here for it. There are several locations of Manouche around the island (at each location caters to a slightly different menu) including Spinola Bay (my favourite), Valletta, Mosta and Sliema. This is also not just a place for breakfast, but it is always the reason I go. If you like rich, delicious and savoury food then this one is for you. I am a huge eggs benedict girl and Manouche is the one to beat: Manouche buttered English muffin, asparagus, streaky bacon, poached eggs with wilted spinach & hollandaise sauce…need I say more?

THE GREENHOUSE

Say what? The café located at Greens the grocery store? You heard me correctly. They have recently changed their menu in a big way and have quickly sealed their place at the top of my list for breakfast and dinner. Here is one that reminds me of home in the southern part of North America but with a serious Mediterranean twist: chicken and waffles. Chicken and waffles are a Georgia staple, but this one comes with a more sophisticated version of things. You can order this for breakfast, lunch or dinner: a golden waffle with cream cheese and an assortment of sauteed vegetables including peppers and topped with a gorgeous and perfectly fried piece of chicken and drizzled with honey. There are many things on the menu I could recommend here, but the chicken and waffles are so rich and scrumptious that I can’t bring myself to order anything but that! Greens has several locations including Gozo.

Uqija Street, Is-Swieqi, Malta

Busy Bee Café is a place that many are familiar with and they serve wonderful breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts and some of the finest coffee. For breakfast they offer such menu items as the classic full English, eggs benedict, the Florentine benedict, your assortment of omelette choices. They also have a vegetarian breakfast option of grilled halloumi with eggs, hash browns, tomato, baked beans, and mushrooms. Or the full non-vegetarian breakfast offers what the vegetarian breakfast does but with additional sausages. If you could choose sweeter and go with the Brioche Bun breakfast with bacon, sausage, fried egg and tomatoes.

THE INFLUENTIAL GRAND MASTER WHO SHAPED MALTA’S HISTORY

A number of significant people left their irrevocable imprint on the colourful fabric of Malta's illustrious history, influencing the course of this gem of the Mediterranean. None of these great figures is more illuminated than the fabled Grand Master, Jean Parisot de Valette.

Valette is revered for his unshakable leadership, strategic acumen, and undying devotion to his native nation. His legacy reverberates throughout the annals of Malta's rich history. In this article, we set out on an intriguing trip to learn more about the extraordinary life and lasting influence of this historical character, who led Malta through a trying time and lay the groundwork for its ongoing success.

In Quercy, southwest France, Jean Parisot de Valette was born into the affluent La Valette family, a prominent one in France for many years with several relatives who took part in the Crusades. De Valette, the second son in his family, entered the Order of St. John as a knight of the Langue of Provence when he was 20 years old, and it is stated that after that day he never again visited France or his family properties.

Except for the fact that he took part in the Siege of Rhodes in 1522 and that he landed in Malta in 1530 along with the rest of the Knights, very little is known about his early years in the Order. At this point, his name starts surfacing more frequently in historical documents, albeit some of the details therein depict a slightly different portrait of the guy than what is typically given. De Valette received a huge accolade in 1554 when he was named CaptainGeneral of the Order's galleys, a significant position in which he continued to excel. So much so that on August 21, 1557, the Knights unanimously elected de Valette to succeed Grand Master Claude de la Sengle after the latter's passing.

During the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, he organised the defences of Malta, participated in the siege, and helped the island successfully fend off the Turks. The massively outnumbered Christians managed to hold out for more than three months during the siege against an Ottoman army that included at least 30,000 men, including Janissaries, and the Sultan's fleet of about 193 ships. After over a month of ferocious combat, the conflict witnessed the loss of Fort St. Elmo, but the Order was able to hold out in Birgu and Senglea until a rescue army came. In their first assessment of Saint Elmo's defences based on interviews with locals and reconnaissance expeditions,

34 OH MY MALTA

Ottoman expert engineers predicted that the stronghold would be destroyed in three days.

He supervised the building of the new city of Valletta in 1566 during the lengthy siege and personally laid the foundation stone. This occurred on the slopes of Mount Sciberras, where the Turkish army's brightest soldier had fallen while attempting to attack Fort Saint Elmo, which the Turks believed would fall within three or four days but which, because to the valour of the defenders, held out for 30 days. Humilissima Civitas Vallettae, the city that bears its founder's name, rose to prominence as Europe's most opulent and exclusive fortification. It is also known as "Superbissima" or the "Most Proud" city. The Maltese capital, Valletta, is still in existence today.

However, despite his popularity within the Order, it should be emphasised that the was not always so well-liked by the Maltese. He was viewed by many as being haughty and brutal to anyone who dared to disagree with him. One such incident included the Maltese physician Mattew Callus, a member of the Mdina Universita, who wrote the King of Spain about de Valette's contentious choice to restrict the Universita's authority and finances. Unfortunately for him, de Valette's spies intercepted the letter before it could reach the King, which resulted in Callus' death for treason.

De Valette has been referred to as a man who kept his word, however it has been said that while he was on the island of Rhodes, he had a mistress named Catherine, who was known as Greque in Greek, and that they produced a son, Barthélemy de Valette. Bonello has discovered documentation that demonstrates Barthélemy was legitimated in 1568 by an order of King Charles IX of France.

The Grandmaster’s health rapidly depleted following the victory of the Ottomans. De Valette began acting erratically as a result of his growing paranoia that some of the knights were scheming to harm him. The brutal death of his daughter Isabella was what delivered him the final blow. Stefano Buonaccorsi, her Florentine husband, had grown obsessed with his wife's alleged or actual adultery. On July 31, 1568, in a furious rage, he stabbed her to death before escaping from Malta with all of her assets.

Perhaps not unexpectedly, this most recent occurrence drove de Valette completely insane. Despite neither the offender nor the victim being members of the organisation, he called a meeting of the Order's Council and enlisted the help of all its agents to conduct a manhunt to find Buonaccorsi. De Valette was cheated out of justice since the fugitive could not be located.

Exactly eleven years after becoming Grandmaster and less than a month after his daughter's death, Valette had a stroke while praying in a chapel and passed away shortly after. He did so on August 21, 1568. De la Valette was never present when Valletta was finished. His sarcophagus-shaped grave may be located inside Valletta's city walls in the Crypt of the Conventual Church of the Order, which is now St. John's Co-Cathedral. It was then Grandmaster Pierre de Monte who took over, and he continued and finished building Valletta.

Nonetheless, Jean de De Vallette is deemed as an icon that shaped Malta’s history. Both the MV Jean de Valette, the flagship of Virtu Ferries, and a street in Naxxar bear his moniker. De Valette has also appeared on a variety of Maltese stamps, and banknotes. A monument of the 49th and arguably most well-known Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John was placed in Valletta's newly inaugurated Pjazza Jean de Valette in 2012.
