DECEMBER 2021 AUTUMN 2020 On the surface, the Maltese Islands may not seem like a typical winter season destination. Well-known for stunning coastlines and being an international diving spit, tourists traditionally flock to Malta during the summer months to soak up the sun. As it turns out, however, the country has so much more to offer than its annual average of 300 days of sunshine and clear blue sea. As we enter the month of December, the islands are intricately decorated and adorned with anything and everything Christmas related. The beautiful, bright lights, chillier temperatures and all together warm and inviting atmosphere make the country a great place to visit at this time of year. To prove this to you, we have made sure to include an in-depth calendar of events for the month, ranging from festive shows to parties, exhibitions to foodrelated activities. We also shine a light on the capital of Valletta and restaurants you should visit in the city, as well as places you should check out with the whole family, for a super fun day out. No Oh My Malta issue is complete without a jampacked food and local section and this time, we dedicated an entire feature to the art of making, packing and eating traditional local cheese, ġbejniet. Where the pandemic is concerned, Malta is one of the safest places to be in Europe at this point in time, with low infection rates and an impressive vaccination drive. Travel restrictions have been eased and measures associatd with the majority of industries on the islands are almost non-existant, making Malta the place to be this December. We could not be happier to welcome you to our home.
Considering that the tourism industrywas one of the most negatively impactedsectors of the Maltese economyandthe travel health regulations to safeguard the health of the generalpublic,it can be said that tourismtraffic to the Maltese Islands progressively improved week after week so much so that the recoveryof this sector is on the right track.
vaccinated tourists to enter the country. This is leading to a sense of postivity as tourism volumes and airline connectivity gradually move towards to pre-COVID-19 normality.
The Government of Malta was quick to respond to the pandemic and was praised and acknowledged by the European Commission, the Commonwealth, the World Health Organisation, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation for its approach.
In fact, Eurostat figures show that between June and August of this year, Malta experienced the largest increase in nights spent in tourist accomodation amongstall EU members.Whereas in the same period of lastyear the number of nights spent in tourists accomodation reached 838,151, this year these numbers increased to a total of 1,808,918. Awhopping increase of 120%.
A number of protocols were implemented to make sure that visitors have a safe holiday, to ensure hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions reach the highest levels of cleanliness and safety.Malta’s greatest asset is the dual advantage of having the most highly vaccinated European population which is already receving booster doses coupled with an entry regime which only allows
In 2022 and beyond, Malta plans to rebuild and sustain its tourism and we’ll aim to deliver the best experiences for visitors to encourage repeat visitation by highlighting key themes, such as gastronomy and diving. Our goal is to make Malta a hub of tourism excellence in the Mediterranean. The road to achieve this vision is an ambitious onebut together we can make it happen.

Ever since, Karen developed a large array of portfolio and she is celebrating this milestone by sharing her work with the public through this exhibition.

Portraits: A Piano Recital The Malta Society of Arts, 219, Palazzo De La Salle, Republic Street, Valletta
This project was inspired by Covid and all its related restrictions, frustrations, insecurity, crushed projects and defeats. We’ve all touched that ‘black hole’ one way or another. But being a musician thankfully also presents the possibility of creating that which nothing can touch. And that which brings you in touch. Music – about which we’ve all heard the phrase “when words fail, music speaks” ad nauseum. It’s true though. And being a pianist also presents the possibility of reproducing music that other instrumentalists fail in their endeavours as soloists. Ten fingers, however big or small they may be, are capable of reproducing a whole orchestra, the sheer power of expression of a group of people, freeing the imagination to unimagined heights, hearing a flute sing through the pianist’s little fifth finger, the clarinet in the middle line coming from between the hands, the bassoon in the bass line, the horn singing plaintively through the thumb. We fly, going beyond that great majestic instrument we call the grand piano, but which really should be called infinite possibilities, flying imagination. MET Encore | Eurydice Spazju Kreattiv Cinema, St James Cavalier
The ancient Greek myth of Orpheus, who attempts to harness the power of music to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the underworld, has inspired composers since opera’s earliest days. Rising American composer Matthew Aucoin now carries that tradition into the 21st century with a captivating new take on the story. With a libretto by MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Sarah Ruhl, adapted from her acclaimed 2003 play, the
opera reimagines the familiar tale from Eurydice’s point of view. Met Music Director Yannick NézetSéguin takes the podium, leading Aucoin’s evocative music and an immersive new staging by Mary Zimmerman. Soprano Erin Morley sings the title role, opposite baritone Joshua Hopkins as Orpheus and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński as his otherworldly alter ego. Get your tickets from kreattivita.org

The shows will take place on 18 December at 3pm and 5.30pm, and on 19 December at 11am and 3pm at Teatru Manoel Studio Theatre. Taking place under the musical direction of Tom Armitage and featuring Julie James, TOI TOI Christmas Classics will go down a treat with Teatru Manoel’s

MALTESE HERITAGE HIGHLIGHTS Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
Travel through the centuries, from the Neolithic to the Roman. Visit the early modern religious powerhouse that was the Inquisitor's Palace, take in the breathtaking panorama of the Grand Harbour on one of Fort St Elmo's bastions and admire the resilience of the Maltese nation in the National War Museum. We have picked out five top Heritage highlights across the breadth and span of the islands to provide a fascinating introduction to Malta's rich past. ĦAL SAFLIENI HYPOGEUM Begin your tour in the south of Malta by exploring the unique subterranean rock-cut chambers of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. Consisting of three separate interconnected levels, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was in use between 4000BC and 1500BC. The burial complex features intricate red ochre motifs of spirals, spots and honeycombs on the walls and ceiling and an 'Oracle' room, so named because of a niche with acoustic properties. Inquisitor's Palace
INQUISITOR'S PALACE Situated close by in the heart of the historical city of Vittoriosa, the Baroque seat of the Inquisition in Malta is the only inquisitorial palace in the world still presented as such and made accessible to the public. Together with the National Museum of Ethnography, visitors can explore the spine-chilling setting of the Holy Office Tribunal, the prison complex and torture chamber. Less steely nerves are required to saunter through the more sophisticated ambience of the piano nobile and private quarters inhabited by a roll call of austere spiritual judges that included two future Popes amongst them.
Fort St Elmo
FORT ST ELMO Pop on a short ferry ride over to the capital of Valletta, to visit the impressive grounds of Fort St Elmo, which houses the National War Museum and two chapels dedicated to St Anne. Originally intended as a war machine, the starshaped fort was built in a strategic location at the tip of the Sceberras peninsula in 1552, to face and hold back the wrath of the Ottoman armada. Under British rule, Fort St Elmo was extensively upgraded for new artillery and even played an important role in the defence of Malta during the Second World War blitz. Notable artefacts within the museum include military armour of the Order of St John and the Ottoman Turks, the Gloster Sea Gladiator N5520 FAITH, Roosevelt's Jeep 'Husky', and Malta's award for gallantry, the George Cross.
Domvs Romana
DOMVS ROMANA Valletta is a transport hub providing easy access to your next port of call, a Roman townhouse next to the Medieval capital of Mdina. Accidentally discovered in 1881, the Domvs Romana in Rabat sheds light on the private life and habits of an ancient Roman aristocrat. The intricate mosaics and the only set of marble statues portraying Emperor Claudius and his family found in a private house anywhere in the world bear testimony to the original affluence of this dwelling. ĠGANTIJA TEMPLES Located on Gozo, Malta's smaller sister island, a picturesque 25-minute ferry ride across the channel, Ġgantija Temples are considered to be a milestone in humankind's technological evolution. Prepare to be awed by the enormous megaliths of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which according to local folklore, were believed to have been erected by a giantess who fed on a diet of broad beans and honey. Consisting of two structures built between c.3600 and c.3200BC, the temples that lie on the extraordinary archaeological landscape of the Xagħra plateau command excellent views of the Gozitan countryside. THE DAY MALTA BECAME A REPUBLIC During the month of December, the Maltese Islands celebrate two public holidays: Republic Day and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Here's everything you need to know...
Republic Day, or as the locals refer to it as: Jum irRepubblika, is one of the two public holidays that are celebrated in the month of December in Malta. The 13th of December is the anniversary of arguably one of the most important days in the islands’ history, when Malta abolished the role of the Reġina ta’ Malta and became a republic. THE HISTORY Let’s get into the history. Rewind to the year 1800, when Malta voluntarily became part of the British Empire following a vote passing in favour of being a protectorate, after liberation from the French. Under British rule, the islands flourished and were transformed into a crucial base in the Mediterranean, all the way up until the end of the Second World War. On the 21st September, 1964, the country came to an agreement with the British Empire. The agreement granted the Maltese independence and also allowed for them to remain part of the Commonwealth, with the Queen as the island’s head of state. Just 10 years later, the constitution was altered drastically, resulting in Malta’s transition from an independent state to a republic. This change meant that the Queen was no longer Malta’s head of state and her governor-general, Sir Anthony Mamo, was sworn in as the first President of Malta on the same day. THE CELEBRATIONS There’s a lot to celebrate on Republic Day for the locals, especially when taking into consideration that the transition from independent state to a republic took place less than 60 years ago, which means that many remember
the day with clarity. First up, the President of Malta, in this case the 10th President of Malta George Vella, hosts an award ceremony. During the ceremony, citizens are commended for bringing honour to their country, whether by means of personal successes or meritorious service. Meanwhile, wreath laying ceremonies take place all over the island, on major monuments and military parades unfold in both Marsa and Valletta. The Annual Band Concert take place at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta every year, which consists of different bands from every town or village taking centre stage to play a combination of modern as well as traditional band marches. The celebrations are highlighted and brought to an end with impressive firework displays, which illuminate the Grand Harbour between Marsa, a small town just outside of the capital city itself. THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION As previously mentioned, there is another public holiday which falls in December and that is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Many Christians around the world, especially those of the Catholic faith, mark the feast and attend church services and masses to honour the feast. Many have celebrated this religious feast since the 8th century as it refers to the celebration of the belief that Jesus’ mother Mary was born without sin and that God chose her to be Jesus’ mother. Over 90% of the Maltese population are nominally catholic and thus, many small feasts are celebrated in various towns and villages across the Maltese Islands. OH MY MALTA

CHRISTMAS IN THE CITY
Santa's Fairyland in Valletta, December 2019
To understand why the capital city of Valletta is such a special place, you would need to dig into its fascinatingly rich history. The very first foundation stone of the city was laid on 28 March, 1566, under Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valetta of the Order of St John. Valletta was build on what was called Mount Scebberas, a tongue of land that lies between Malta’s two natural harbours. All that existed were bare rocks and a small watchtower called St Elmo. The Knights of Malta opted for this location in order to help fortify the Order’s position. The Siege of Malta had taken place a year earlier and the victorious Grand Master was looking into improving the island’s defences. Pope Pius V sent his foremost engineer Francesco Laparelli, to build the city both as a fortress to defend Christendom and as a cultural masterpiece. Laparelli designed Valletta based on rectangular grids of streets, which were wide and straight. The grid starts at City Gate and ends at Fort St Elmo and to fortify the city against attacks, it was surrounded by bastions, some of which were built up to 47 metres tall. At the turn of the 16th century, Valletta had grown into a sizeable city and was a popular place to settle among the local population, while former capital Mdina lost much of its allure following the Great Siege. The first baroque buildings to be designed in Valletta were the work of Italian architect, Francesco Buonamici, the Knights’ resident engineer from 1634-1659, assisted by the Italian military architect, Floriani. He extended the fortifications to Floriana and designed churches for Valletta, Rabat and even Ħaż-Żebbuġ. However, as we fast forward to World War II, the ‘city built by gentlemen for gentlemen’ was heavily bombed by Nazi fighter planes and many buildings were either damaged or completely destroyed. In fact, the scars of the war are still visible to this day at the site previously occupied by the former Royal Opera House in the heart of Valletta. Ruined during the war, the site is now used as an open air theatre. Following the war, parts of the city fell into disrepair and many of its former citizens moved out to more modern housing localities on the island. The population dwindled to just 9,000 inhabitants. In the last few years, however, many with a flair for unique architecture have made their way back into the city, investing in old properties and breathing life back into the stunning capital. Valletta is the smallest capital of the European Union and is now the island’s major commercial and financial centre. Folk Festival
CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES IN VALLETTA
SANTA'S FAIRYLAND
NICE THINGS CHRISTMAS MARKET
You knew this one was coming! Fairyland – Santa’s City, will be open to the public for a full month, starting on the 3rd of December. Located at the entrance of the capital city, the Triton Fountain will be transformed into an original adaptation of Santa’s City. Rudolph’s wheel, an ice rink and the man himself, Santa Claus, are just a few attractions that you will find at Fairland. The backdrop to the festival, the Triton Fountain, is made up of three bronze Tritons holding up a large basin. It is one of Malta’s most important modernist landmarks and was designed and constructed between 1952 and 1959.
With over 50 artists and creators joining the two-day event, the Nice Things market’s main aim is to give visitors the opportunity to peruse and browse a range of locally-made products. Between 11-12 December, the market will be displaying items ranging from unique hand-made items, home décor and prints, to accessories and clothing. The market will be taking place at Is-Suq Tal-Belt in Valletta, a location that in the 16th century, was a square called Piazza del Malcantone. It was used as part of the gallows parade of a guilty person, as well as a marketplace, where crops and goods were sold.
WATERFRONT CHRISTMAS VILLAGE
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL SHOW
The Christmas Village at the Waterfront in Valletta will be running for the entire month of December. The beautiful location will be transformed into the Christmas village of your dreams, featuring giant decorations, games, activities and scrumptious seasonal food. The promenade, which used to be called the Valletta Marina, was first developed in 1727, by Grand Master Anton Manuel de Vilhena. It is said that a store-house with marble oil-vats was built, to which further stores and warehouses were added in 1752. The Waterfront now hosts several restaurants and bars and has colourful doors, symbolising the different kinds of goods that were once stored in them.
Following a 17-month intermission, Cirque du Soleil announced that Malta – a destination choice for Europe – will be the first European country to host the show post lockdown. The new show will feature the same signature style acrobatics and visual artistry that fans expect and appreciate, as well as content tailored exclusively for Malta, celebrating the island’s cultural diversity and history. FIERI by Cirque du Soleil will be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC) till the 19th of December. The MCC was built as a hospital in the 16th century by the order of St John and was known as Sacra Infermeria. OH MY MALTA

COSY EATERIES IN VALLETTA The capital city of Valletta is absolutely the place to be on any day of the week, especially when it's delectable food, stunning locations and incomparable ambiances that you're after. Here are some of our top picks...
59 REPUBLIC A casual fine dining experience situated on the historic St Georges Square, Valletta. Highly awarded and where service is paramount. Brimming with creativity and a passion for food, Chef Patron Maria Sammut has been cooking with love for the past 16 years. The food is consistently really well put together and very rich in flavour. The cheese and bacon bonbons, the prawn and duck taco are some of our favourite
picks but the real showstopper is the beef wellington, so if you’re a meat lover you definitely have to order this one! Their desserts are on another level and we cannot stop raving about the strawberry cheesecak, which is literally the shape of a strawberry.

TAPROOM
PALAZZO PRECA
Taproom is a contemporary concept restaurant serving both lunch and dinner as well as late night drinks. This brasserie is a relaxed and welcoming social space to meet and mingle, have a quick bite, an after-work drink or late night cocktails. The menu is fantastic, but the beef tartare is worth a special mention. Oh, and we almost forgot about the beef tagliatelle... simply divine!
It offers a broad range of Mediterranean food, homemade desserts and an extensive wine list. The food is amazing, from the complimentary amuse-bouche to the fabulous desserts and everything in between… and by everything in between we are referring to the pork belly main that is mouthwateringly delicious, as were the accompanying vegetables and roasted potatoes. Who knew a roast dinner could be this good?

Strongly recommend this place to all the pasta lovers out there. The carbonara? Delicious. Exquisite. These words aren't even enough to describe it. As they will undoubtedly explain to you, it is made with pork cheeks instead of bacon and yes, no cream either. You'll struggle to find a better Carbonara. You can even select a bottle of wine from the wine cellar, a very nice touch.
Don’t expect this one to be your standard pizzeria. But we can guarantee the pizza here will definitely be the best pizza you have ever had. They serve pizza rosso (with tomato paste) and bianco (without). The restaurant is advertised as a roman pizzeria, but well, we have eaten at several similar establishments in Rome, and can tell you that this is superior to all of them.

If you’re going for the meat, they tick that box perfectly.
A peaceful haven located in an idyllic setting in Valletta, this eatery will take you on a delicious, palatable journey. With locally sourced, fresh ingredients, their menu is carefully designed to change with the seasons. Manon has a variety of classic dishes on the menu, however, 38 OH MY MALTA
what stands out are the creative Asian fusion dishes. A stunning wine menu and also fancy cocktails. Finish off with an amazing chocolate fondant, cooked perfectly with an oozing middle, just as it should be.

GUZÉ BISTRO
This restaurant is getting lots of attention since being awarded a Michelin Star. Genuine, fresh and local cuisine - all behind one door. A tasting menu with wine pairing is available, so get ready for an explosion of the senses. Each plate is an exceptional combination of food artistry and flavour, with a few suprising twists. If you're looking for a sensational culinary experience, this is definitely the place to be.
The menu is quite simple but superb. We would absolutely recommend beginning your meal with the wild boar pappardelle - a truly excellent plate of pasta! You can also choose between a five course meat and fish menu at a reasonable price. This gem is a serious place for foodies who appreciate the quality of the cooking and produce. Five stars for this one.

MAKING ĠBEJNIET IN GOZO Follow along with this column by Emily A Francis, as we explore further into the culture and cuisine of the Maltese Islands, starting off with fresh foods as a single item, grown and harvested locally
Words by Emily A Francis
OH MY MALTA
41
Today we’re talking about authentic Gozitan cheese and who doesn't love cheese? This cheese, which the locals call ġbejniet is beloved and widely used on the Maltese Islands. It also pairs with almost anything, including salads, olives, crackers and vegetables, on a tray or even by itself. It just elevates every dish up a notch or two. Ġbejniet were one of the first food items I was introduced to by my local friends, as they wanted to ensure that I knew what it was and that it was a locally-made product. Let’s start off with the pronunciation of this magnificent cheese. As an American woman, I had to practice saying the word over and over again, in order to sound at least a tiny bit like I knew what I was asking for at the local deli. It is the soft J in English, followed immediately by the B sound that I struggled with the most. If you’re not a local, you might find that it needs a little practice. Weeks later and I find myself still practicing, in order to go from the soft J to the hard B, without an additional syllable between the two. Every person I’ve presented the word to tends to stick the ah sound in between the J and B, producing something that sounds a lot more like JahBenya, than it does ġbejna. You, like me, must resist the urge to do that as it makes the word null and void to ears that know what you’re trying to say and therefore, you will instantly give yourself away. If you want to sound even remotely like you know what you’re talking about, it must be pronounced correctly. As you may know, the Maltese take great pride in their land, their language and their cuisine and learning how to pronounce the product you want is a must. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR CHEESE? Moving on from our lesson in words and sounds is the real topic de jour of this piece. Would you like your authentic ġbejniet made from goats or sheeps milk? Or would you rather half and half of both milks? Would you like it hard or do you prefer a soft ġbejna? Would you like it lightly sprinkled with sea salt or heavily peppered? What about herbed? These are things you need to know the next time you step up to your local deli counter, or you purchase pre-packaged and vacuum sealed ġbejniet, which can be found at almost any food store on the islands. Next, to really impress your friends, you
should learn the way in which the cheeselet should be cut: into fours. That is how it’s done. The locals rarely break the cheeselet into bits and sprinkle it, the way we do with feta. Alternatively, it’s cut vertically and then horizontally and then it’s ready to be served. Ġbejna is creamy, rich and bold in its flavour and texture. It adds to the dynamic of flavour of any dish and also gives a more aesthetically pleasing aspect to any plate you’re hoping to offer to a table of friends. HOW IS ĠBEJNIET MADE? The ingredients are simple and limited but the process of making ġbejniet is rather complex, hence why we met with ġbejniet maker George Attard, from the Tal-Kejken Farm in Gozo. He has been making his product for over 70 years and started in the kitchen with his mother when he was just 10 years old. To this day, he has never stopped. He wakes up every morning at no later than 5am to milk his sheep and goats. He makes ġbejniet every single day, to be picked up directly from his farm by local stores and families alike. George makes all types of ġbejniet including the hard, soft, herbed, peppered, goat’s milk, sheep's milk and half and half, depending on the demand. The ingredients beyond the milk are only down to the powder that George mixes it with, as well as the approach. When peppered, vinegar is added. Otherwise, beyond the milk, powder and whatever herbs are added, the cheeselet may only contain salt as the final ingredient. If you’re looking for soft cheese, it’s served immediately and can be kept fresh in a refrigerator for up to three days. If it’s the hard cheese that you’re after, it’s created in the same way that the soft cheese is made but it is then placed outside in the sun, in special casing to keep insects away. George also dries out his ġbejniet with a fan. George has been doing this for so many years that the locals (as well as everyone else) know exactly where to find him. As expected, he was as lovely as any of the other local farmers have been, as warm and inviting as I could have asked for. I hope that George, along with his son Joseph, continues making their supreme ġbejniet for a great many years to come.

INTERVIEW WITH: OWEN LEUELLEN We catch up with singer, songwriter and superstar rapper Owen Leuellen about his new music style, his fashion sense and what he has in store for the future. Earlier this year, the rapper released a visualiser for his brand new hit tune Follow, the 14th track off his debut album Dreams
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR DEBUT ALBUM DREAMS?
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE PROCESS OF FILMING A MUSIC VIDEO?
I started working on my first album right after the X factor, but it took way longer than expected. The production took it’s time along with a set of music videos but the result was worth the wait. The idea behind the first album ‘Dreams’ is showcasing the beginning of my career and how it went from dreams to reality faster than I thought. With that being said, the projects that will come after this all depict the journey from start, step by step.By the time the second and third albums will be out, you could see the change in both style and flows in my music as I adapt to the modern scene slowly straying from what I started with.
Filming a music video takes a lot of patience and repetitive actions, but when you have an artistic director like Steven Levi Vella you can easily pour the vision from sound into visuals. So after all the tedious filming hours and effort, the result was always worth it, and left the final phase: promotion. I believe that if I keep stacking songs and videos on my profiles and channels, whenever the time comes for some A&R to look at my catalog while scouting for a label, I’m positive that I would bring enough to the table to get my music overseas.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK OFF THE ALBUM AND WHY? This question feels like asking a father which of his kids are his favourite. It’s hard to answer as I made them all with passion but if I had to pick the best story it would be the song ‘Dreams’, 'Runaway for the best sound and the most motivational would be ‘Believe’. ARE YOU DOING THIS FULL TIME? Nowadays I’m doing this as a full time job yes, but I never really decided on it. I had shows every week, sometimes even twice a day, so I had to start prioritising it and so, I stopped looking at it as a hobby. I became self employed and the name Leuellen turned into my business but I had a lot to lear. Two years later, I've got the hang of it but it still requires daily effort and productivity. HOW HAS YOUR MUSICAL-STYLE EVOLVED FROM THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CAREER? My style started off mostly dark and deep storytelling, sticking to the roots of hiphop. However, the more time passed the more I started evolving and adapting to the modern sounds that work in this day and age. I began to give my songs some more positive vibes as well as more melodic choruses. I even added easier words for the listener. What built the bridge for non-hiphop lovers to show more interest than usual was the moment I was featured on Ira Losco’s ‘Hey Now’. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST AND BEST MUSICAL ACCOMPLISHMENT SO FAR? From all the milestones I’ve achieved throughout these few years, such as winning four awards, performing on MTV and opening for international artists on several occasions, I’d say hitting 1.5 million views on on 'Hey Now', which helped me achieve the most attention and respect for my music. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF YOUR CAREER? Even though I had fun performing 'Hey Now' in huge venues with the crowd singing along (which is the best feeling in the world), I’d say my favourite and best performance was on the MTV stage, where I was one of the show openers for huge international artists in a concert that housed fifty thousand people, right in front of my hometown Valletta. This experience was followed by ‘Radio Itaila’, which was as big as MTV but an Italian version. With that being said, it all started with a dream.. now I’m doing what I was writing about when I was fifteen.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO TAKE YOUR MUSIC INTERNATIONAL? WHAT’S THE GAME PLAN? Definitely, the plan is to start off by moving to London to start putting my music on radios, later on planning to take the show on the road to the United States, preferably California. WHO INSPIRES YOU MUSICALLY AND PERSONALLY? WHY? My musical inspiration started from being able to relate to Eminem’s rap music, which later expanded to several artists from different genres, including rock and pop. Personally speaking, my biggest inspiration and idol is my older brother, who motivates me to chase goals and treat every experience as a life lesson. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR X FACTOR MALTA EXPERIENCE IN THREE WORDS? Life-changer - opportunity – first-step. WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE AND LEAST FAVOURITE LOOKS FROM X FACTOR MALTA LIVE SHOWS? Well, my absolute favourite look was the black leather jacket from the final show and my least favorite was the leopard print jacket; it really wasn’t my style although it worked really well with the theme we had, so no complaints here. HAS BEING IN THE PUBLIC EYE CHANGED THE WAY YOU DRESS, AND YOUR APPROACH TO FASHION? Indeed it has. I wasn’t too keen on self-care and appearance before, but I have come to accept that like music, clothes are a form of expression and being in the public eye, you want your message to be understood, particularly when it comes to stageshows. Apart from this, you get approached by fashion designer and brands, and can’t help but become more aware. An example of this is my recent collaboration on the BOSS x Russell Athletic capsule collection. That was super cool. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? My goal for the coming years is to be on the road, touring different countries and expanding my platform on an international level. In five years, my aim is to be in the United States working with big names in the music industry and putting our little island on the map, hoping to create a link that makes it easier for local artists to find a connection abroad. I would say that that is my ultimate aim. OH MY MALTA
