AUTUMN 2020

Crystal-clear waters, constant sunshine, explosive local flavours and sublime sunsets. If there is one thing that the locals love above all else, it is the celebration of life! And throughout the summer, we gather to celebrate music, food, wine, and local talent more than ever. The best way to beat the heat is to synchronise with the locals. Hit the beach early (we've listed our top ones on Malta's sister island) with an iced cold cocktail and after a much-needed siesta, get ready to embrace the summer nights in Malta. When the temperature heats up. so does the island's nightlife. It's time to let loose. Theatre is back. Festivals are back. Yes, festival fever takes hold of the island in summer. So if music is the food of your soul, don't miss out on Rock the South, three days of concerts featuring both legendary and emerging artists. Summer is Malta's headlining act. It's the season we all need and crave. So we're here to share every ray of the endless Maltese summer with you. We couldn't be happier to welcome you!

It’s also very important to be able to show musicians from overseas what is going on in our country; we have so many talented artists and so many great bands here, and I think connection is always key. THIS YEAR WELCOMES IGGOR CAVALERA, A RENOWNED BRAZILIAN DRUMMER AND FOUNDER MEMBER OF THE WELLKNOWN BAND SEPULTURA. HOW DID HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE FESTIVAL ARISE AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE ABLE TO WELCOME SUCH A WORLDWIDE ARTIST?

I’d seen some videos of him performing modular electronic sets, and asked him if he would like to perform in that capacity for Rock the South. He agreed, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming him to the festival. I think this is going to be one of the first times he will have performed this particular set, if not the first time, so it’s going to be a very unique experience for Malta and Rock the South. But be fair warned, while October’s air and sea temperatures are usually mild and days are steeped in around seven hours of sunshine, things can also get pretty wet and stormy during this month. If you are visiting in October, particularly in the first half of the month, your bathing suit as well as your brolly should go into your luggage.

AN EARLY TASTE OF SUMMER? WHY, CERTAINLY. A visit to the islands in spring, particularly in April or May, will give you an early taste of summer, without the sizzling temperatures associated with this season. While April enjoys an average air temperature of 16.4°C and around eight hours of daily sunshine, in May the mercury rises further to average at a pleasant 20°C and the sun shines for around 10 hours a day. Given that May’s average sea temperature remains below the 20°C mark, beaches that are ordinarily packed with people in summer, are still much quieter. Is the idea of having a beach practically all to yourself enough to make you put on a bathing suit and take the plunge?

do not like cold surprises and cold enough for a refreshing dip. Between July and August, the average sea temperature rises from 24.7°C to its annual peak of 26.1°C, while the average maximum air temperature hovers at around 32°C. Things do tend to get hotter in July and August, with the dog days of summer seeing air temperatures hit the high 30s and, at times, even the low 40s.

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS? NO, NOT REALLY. For some snow spells magic, but for others it means shovelling and other annoyances. If waking up to blue skies and mild temperatures on Christmas day is more your kind of magic than a blanket of white, do know that the likelihood of the Maltese Islands experiencing a white Christmas is extremely remote. This is because temperatures never drop to sub-zero – the lowest temperature on record was registered 41 years ago at 1.4°C - and the presence of the surrounding seas makes it difficult for snow to form. December 2021 was bathed in 175 hours of sunshine, and the month’s air temperature peaked at 18.9°C on Boxing Day! Not too shabby if you love a bit of winter warmth and sunshine, right?

Skala has a variety of meanings. One source states that since Marsaskala was visited by Sicilian fisherman, therefore it might have been derived from Sqalli (Sicilian). Contrarily, perhaps it was taken from the Sicilian 'Piccola Cala,' which means small inlet, or it was just a reference to so stairs along the water's edge, as scala also means straight flight of steps. Nonetheless, if you’re interested in visiting Marsascala, the locals will probably refer to it as ‘Wied il-Għajn’ because the bay and the former little settlement are surrounded by two valleys through which a freshwater spring used to pour down into the innermost bay. ‘Wied il- Għajn’ literally translates as "Valley of the Spring." 60 Ottoman ships carrying 6000 troops arrived at Marsaskala in 1614 and started an attack on Malta's south coast. Despite the fact that the fight was a clear Maltese triumph, it brought up memories of the Great Siege of Malta. The construction of Saint Thomas Tower in late 1565 lessened Marsaskala's susceptibility to seaborne assaults. Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt sponsored the tower, which is one of a sequence of his towers. St. Thomas Tower was utilised for military reasons until the 19th century, after which it was repaired. The tower cost him 12,000 skudi, a large sum at the time, and it is larger than

Despite the archaeological remains of Roman dwellings found near Marsaskala, the region remained mainly unpopulated until recently. Historically, people were terrified of establishing in the region since the natural harbour was easily accessible to intruders. There were just a few houses in the neighbourhood about a century ago, and they were well fortified by their owners. The population is estimated to be approximately 12,000 people, however, like Melliea, it is a popular summer destination for both residents with summer houses and tourists. However, due to its secluded location, is still rather peaceful at that time of year. Marsascala, which is built around a tiny natural harbour, has been a famous fishing destination since antiquity and remains so now. Marsascala embodies the authentic Maltese spirits via its residents' joie de vivre and passion for the sea and fresh air. However, Marsascala was not always the town that we see today. Although archaeologists have discovered evidence that man has been using the land surrounding Marsascala Creek for millennia, Marsascala as a town has only been around for a few decades. Consequently, while roaming around Marsascala, one should keep in mind the history that has shaped the way the seaside town encompasses the southeast part of Malta.
