MAY 2022
AUTUMN 2020
With spring in full swing, tourism is undoubtedly ready to rise and shine in Malta and the surge in tourism-related bookings is the silver lining around the dark memories of the pandemic. Now, more than ever, we are in a period of rebirth and renewal. As we approach the summer months, business is recovering, we’re optimistic, we’re inspired and our excitement to welcome more tourists cannot be contained. Whether you’re looking for a week in the sun, a fun-filled fortnight, or perhaps a longer adventure to explore the rich and lavish history and culture, you’ve chosen the ideal destination – and this issue will showcase just a taster of what the island has to offer. Diversity, performances, artistry, creativity and history. Malta is an island brimming with culture around every corner that is waiting to be discovered. We share the wealth of culture the country has to offer and highlight its rich historical past and traditions. We even hop on a ferry to the sister island of Gozo and explore the little island using unusual methods of transportation, which you should definitely try out for yourselves! We want to remind you to unplug, explore and enjoy all that Malta has to offer. We couldn't be happier to welcome you home!

Therefore it is crucial that the Government and the industry continue to work at par so that the Maltese product is strengthened and positioned upwards in the tourism world. The ongoing priority needs to continue being the recovery stage. The second step is to undergo a thorough analysis of nowadays’s tourism demands and adopt accordingly. Thirdly, a total revitalisation aimed at revitalising the Maltese hospitality sector.

Guitarist Ross “The Boss” Friedman met Andy Shernoff in 1973 andthey created the band known as The Dictators, who became the first signed Punk Rock band launching the CBGBs scene. Ronnie James Dio introduced Ross to Joey DeMaio and the two of them agreed on their vision for what a Heavy Metal band should be and together, they co-founded Manowar. They created their own subgenre and dubbed it “True Metal” playing epic songs with viking themes at very loud volumes. His eight years and six albums with this band gained him an unbelievably loyal cult following who widely considers Ross The Boss to be the definitive Manowar guitar player.

Since the beginning of the civil war in Syria some four million Syrians have had to leave the country to escape the violence. More than half of them are children. “2016. MOS EXPLORING
by Terrence Mifsud
TA
The town of Mosta is located in the northern region of Malta. With a population of over 17,000, Mosta is highly acclaimed by locals and tourists around for retaining its traditional village essence. Mosta’s long-established rich history reverts to the village core that is the main church, an outstanding Dome dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. Interestingly enough, Mosta celebrates the parish feast of the Assumption on the 15 of August, among the other 6 villages such as Mqabba & Attard, that honour the same feast of ‘Santa Marija’ on the same date. The feast of Saint Mary is unequivocally one of the most sought-after feasts in Malta, attracting thousands of tourists and locals to watch in awe as the fireworks trace the sky and the mechanical ground fireworks dazzle the surrounding streets. Mosta is one of the most ancient villages in Malta, having been inhabited since pre-history. Findings such as archaeological sites including the Wied Filep dolmen, the dolmen located in Santa Margerita, and the five pairs of cart ruts near Fort Mosta underline the civilised antiquity of Mosta. In the Middle Ages, Mosta was a relatively tiny hamlet, with just a couple of hundred inhabitants, adjacent to other tiny hamlets like Raħal Kircipulli, Raħal Sir, Raħal Calleja, Raħal Ħobla, Raħal Brabar and Raħal Dimech. These minute villages eventually shrivelled, with Mosta capitalising and taking over as the main primary village. However, Mosta to this day is still split up in various zones that encase the quaint village. These include Iż-Żokrija, Santa Margerita, IsSgħajtar , Tal-Blata l-Għolja, and Ta’ Mlit. The third-largest village in Malta is definitely a hot spot for local activities. The main square is glutted with amenities such as the town’s local council, post office, bank branches, and numerous cafeterias where visitors can unwind, drink a cup of hot coffee, and bask in the panorama of the dome. There are also Pastizzerias to assuage your sweet tooth with a local imqaret or a crispy pastizz to curb your hunger. Mostin (the term used to refer to inhabitants of Mosta) are extremely friendly, welcoming tourists to their homey yet fruitful village. Mosta is home to an array of landmarks, sightseeing locations, and other places of interest. From the aviation museum, the Speranza Chapel, Ta’ Bistra catacombs, Cumbo Tower, Wied il-Ghasel, and the lion monument in the Rotunda Square, Mosta is surely a town worth visiting!

A LEGENDARY TALE BASED ON THE MOSTA BRIDE Wo rd s by Ter renc e Mifs ud
The Mosta Bride (L-Għarusa tal-Mosta) is unquestionably one of the most popular folktales in Malta. In fact, it is introduced to little tots at primary school when they’re learning about Maltese culture and traditions. While the legend is not backed up with any historical evidence, there is evidence documenting an ambush from the Turkish regime, resulting in an abduction of around 500 prisoners from the village of Mosta. Additionally, one of the hostages was actually a bride from Mosta. Of course, this happened 20 OH MY MALTA Photo: Paul Herrera

THE COPIOUS HISTORY OF STRAIT STREET

to relish the booze, music, and women being offered to them. Becoming the British naval port, Malta had to adjust its amenities and make sure to satisfy all of the garrison’s needs and demands. Pervasive and illegal prostitution was materialising in an unbridled yet such blatant manner, making it impossible for the police authorities to be unaware of the chaos. One has to take into account the period of time that this was taking place, in early 20th century Malta; the personification of Christianity and reticence. The Roman Catholic Church censored everything, from newspapers and magazines, that was deemed as controversial, opinionated, or salacious.
The phenomenon that is Strat Street was not solely accessible to British sailors, but instead, it branched out into a place where the British, the Italians, and the Maltese could drink, dance, and talk about sultry women together in harmony. That is also why Strait Street was infamously known as the Maltese Red Light District. Interestingly enough, we assume that this is where various Maltese equipped the English language, from socialising with British sailors in a comradery fashion to alluring them with a sensual night of money, sex, and booze. Strait Street explicitly juxtaposed neighbouring streets and towns, shedding off its Catholic skin to emulate sheer intemperance and overindulgence of taboo convictions. This is why the street was referred to as ‘The Gut’ amongst visitors.
The era of bar brawls, rampant prostitution, and comradery between the locals and the matelots’ came to an abrupt end when the British forces vacated the Maltese islands. Due to the implications that etched the ambience, locals who attended ‘The Gut’ abstained from sharing their experiences in fear of judgement, rubbing off a part of history which is now in jeopardy of being lost.
Through a vigorous renovation that has been done to the surrounding areas, Strait Street is now embellished with artistic bars and restaurants to attract locals and tourists around. This dynamic district has taken back the reins, welcoming people to wine and dine, listen to live music, and enjoy the wonders that Valletta has to offer! Photo by Leslie Vella

FROM LANDFILLS TO GREEN SPACES Through two projects carried out by WasteServ, two of Malta and Gozo's landfills have been safely rehabilitated and restored to green areas and are now home to one of the most diverse ecosystems
St Anne's Street, Floriana
If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of Sliema and Valletta, then we have two recommendations for you; Wied Fulija in Żurrieq and Qortin in Xagħra, Gozo. There is no way you'd guess that these two sites were once landfills, as they have since then been transformed into stretches of green landscape offering uninterrupted panoramic views. Wied Fulija served as a landfill for 42 years until its closure in 1996. Following a landfill rehabilitation project with a €4.5 million investment that WasteServ completed last year, this area in Żurrieq is today flourishing and bursting with wildlife. Lined with shrubs and trees, this place has become highly sought-after as an area to get away from the rigours of daily life and enjoy a nice stroll with family and friends. The two waste mounds that still contain around two billion kilogrammes of waste were recontoured at a safe angle, then covered with a subsoil and a topsoil, and revegetated. Around 43,000 trees and shrubs were planted as part of this extensive rehabilitation. A paved pathway, dotted with benches, was also created to allow access to the cliff ’s edge. Another landfill, this time on the island of Gozo, Qortin has also been transformed into an open space for families to enjoy. Nowadays completely unrecognisable, it offers a unique sense of remoteness as you make your way along the loop walking trail while savouring epic views of the Gozitan landscape. Lying on a footprint of 50,000m2, Qortin was in operation as a landfill from 1968 until 2004. During this time, it received close to 600million kilogrammes of waste. Following the rehabilitation process whereby the landfill was sealed off by means of a subsoil and topsoil, and around 23,000 shrubs planted, this place was opened to the public earlier this year. Besides being the perfect place to enjoy a nice walk or to simply sit and watch the sun go down, this is also a great place to visit with your pooch as a dog park offering a stress-free environment is also available. Owing to these projects, Wied Fulija and Qortin are today home to one of the most diverse ecosystems. And while these landfills had been an eyesore for so many years, they are today a great outdoor spot that will allow you to get off the beaten track while discovering some of the most beautiful parts of the country.

STRAWBERRIES GROWN AND HARVESTED IN MALTA F o ll ow a l o ng wi t h t hi s c o l um n by Emily A F ra nc is , a s we explo re fur ther in t o t he c ul t ure a nd c ui s i ne o f the Ma ltes e I s la nds , s ta r ting o ff with fres h f o o d s a s a s i ng l e i tem, grown a nd ha r ves ted lo c a lly

The strawberry packs a mighty punch when it comes to what that little fruit is all about. One of the highest allergy-inducing foods around, both strawberries and tomatoes can present with a sensitivity in those who are allergic to birch pollen. This is also due to the way in which conventional strawberries (and tomatoes) are grown and handled. The health benefits of strawberries are impressive. They are not a high glycemic fruit and therefore can be enjoyed without guilt by diabetics. They are thought to help reduce inflammation in arthritis and the high levels of antioxidants can even help to prevent strokes. They are a solid source of potassium (it’s not just bananas), contain a good amount of vitamin C (not just oranges) that help strengthen our immune system. We took a trip down to Mġarr, also known as the location where some of the best fruits and vegetables are known to grow on the island. We visited Aaron Camilleri at Ta’ Salut Farm to see his incredible harvest of perfectly ripe strawberries. Aaron is a lifelong farmer who learned from his father, grandfather and beyond. We even got to meet Benny, his father, when we arrived at the strawberry patch as he had just returned from selling fruits and vegetables
on their truck that day. They both were so lovely and so inviting to all of us. This is a testimony to the Maltese farmers. I have come to deeply adore each that I have met. I believe that getting to mingle with the soil, the sun, the water, and mother earth herself on a daily basis makes for a much happier person. They know what life is truly about. They put love into everything they do and it shows in their harvests and it also shows in their personalities. They are happy, kind, loving, inviting people who are open to sharing their wisdom with people who want to learn from it. I have yet to be disappointed meeting any local farmer here in Malta. Knock on wood. Time for a little story. I have never in my life eaten a strawberry right from the ground. I know what you must be thinking and you would be correct. I am a sheltered one when it comes to farming of any sort! I never lived near any farms in the US. Once when I was at a swanky bar in Los Angeles, California, they had strawberries growing from potted plants all around the outside bar and pool. The pots were

for decoration, I think, but the fruits were real. They were hanging off the latticework all around the pool area. Having several glasses of champagne made me want to try them and I ended up eating almost every strawberry in every pot because they were so ripe and delicious. Until meeting Aaron, those were always what came to mind when I would think of the best strawberries I have ever eaten. But those little potted strawberries have officially been beat by a long shot. The strawberries at Aaron’s farm are so clean that they do not need to be washed before eating. The purity of this fruit blows my mind and my taste buds. I brought my girls along for the interview and they ate the strawberries as if they were candy growing from the ground. Until that very afternoon, one of my children always claimed that she didn’t like strawberries and I could never get her to eat them. Her sister, on the other hand, would eat bowls of them with whipped cream almost daily when they were in season. My little picky eater tried one of Aaron’s fresh strawberries and she could not get enough of the plumpy red jewels. Every time we would bend down and find a shiny red strawberry, we just had to pull it and eat it. We could not help ourselves. Each little strawberry tasted better than the one before. According to Aaron, strawberries are first planted here at the start of September and again at the end of the same month, depending on the variety. The first strawberry is then cut in December, with their peak being during April and May but they’re grown well into June. The Maltese are so passionate about their strawberries that they have an annual festival in Mġarr called Festa Frawli. The village turns red with the colour of the strawberries and offers various foods and drink that have strawberries as the main ingredient. When farmers begin the planting process of the strawberries, they cover the soil with plastic so that the fruits do not touch the soil. The soil is sprayed once at the very beginning to make sure that the red spider
does not get to the fruit. If the red spiders make it to the strawberries, the harvest will die. They also use fertiliser for the soil. However, even with the spray and fertilisers, due to Malta’s high-quality standards, they do not contain the heavily toxic and cancer-causing agents of GMO ingredients: glyphosphate or POEA polyoxyethyleneamine: the most dangerous in combination of all weed killers to humans commonly used in home garden supplies in countries without the ban. From the time that they plant the actual strawberries, no sprays are used. Tending to the strawberries is a daily to weekly affair and requires a lot of maintenance to ensure they are growing properly and will yield a bountiful harvest. The plastic covering over the soil is kept in place because of the high levels of humidity that exists in Malta. The strawberry is an extremely delicate fruit, according to Aaron and due to the humidity, it must remain above the soil without any contact whatsoever. When the strawberries are in season, they’re cut every single day, boxed and delivered to the local stores and fruit trucks and made available for those that want to buy directly from their farm. Ta’ Salut Farm has around 80,000 strawberry plants and on average, they load 50 boxes a day with strawberries. If you’re impressed by those numbers, you’ll be shocked to know that the whole of Malta imports between one and two million strawberry plants every single year, both from Spain and Italy. It’s easy to know if the strawberry is ripe because it becomes red and beautiful. Before it’s ripe, it will have a green colour on it. The deeper the red, the riper and ready to be eaten it is. Strawberries can be rinsed with water but do not need to be, since the fruit here is GMO free and comes from the purest soil. Even more so when you know exactly which farm you are buying your strawberries from. Of course, to keep strawberries fresh, they can be refrigerated, if you do not plan on eating them on the day you get them and they can also be frozen. According to Aaron however, the strawberries are meant to be purchased and eaten on the same day. For this reason, his farm has begun selling half size boxes as well as their regular sized strawberry boxes, so that the strawberries can remain fresh and eaten as suggested.
