The Government has embarked on a project aimed at integrating a mandatory Skills Pass within the tourism and hospitality industry. The overarching goal of the Skills Pass is to ensure that industry employees meet the recognised national minimum standard, which are developed in collaboration with stakeholders.

From this month, third country nationals who are seeking a job in the tourism and hospitality industry in Malta can apply for an online course within their country and undergo a series of assessments, including English proficiency, basic customer care, and specific courses related to Maltese tourism products and hospitality. This is a crucial step forward in maintaining the competitiveness of Malta's hospitality and tourism industry while consistently delivering exceptional experiences to visitors.

This will be taught by two artificial intelligence personas named “Ryan” and “Clara”.

By January next year, these online courses will be extended to those third country nationals who are already working within the industry and need to obtain a single working permit. By January 2026, this project will be extended to EU nationals.

The road to implement this vital reform within Malta’s tourism industry began back in October of last year through a public consultation that involved local stakeholders that both direct and indirect are involved in tourism. The ultimate aim was to bring these people together and ensure that Malta elevates the quality through comprehensive training and assessments for employees.

The Skills pass reform is being piloted by the Institute of Tourism

Studies, the Malta Tourism Authority and Identità agency.

Safe to say that the Skills Pass project has registered overwhelming enthusiasm amongst the aformentioned stakeholders that include the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, Association for Catering Establihsments, Malta Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Small and Media Enterprises, FELTOM, ELT Council, Gozo Tourism Assocation and the Gozo Business Chamber.

How is this reform will be implemented? Well, the verification process consists of two phases. The first phase involves online training and assessment, covering essential modules and occupation-specific evaluations. The second one, entails an online interview via video conferencing ensuring a thorough assessment of candidates’ skills and communication abilities.

Certificates issued under the Skills Pass project, issued according to the respective category, are blockchain-certified for security and authenticity. Robust vetting protocols maintain transparency and ensure every batch of certificates is reviewed accordingly to ensure no foul play.

Further information on the Skills Pass project may be found on the dedicated website - https://skillspass.org.mt

A WALKTHROUGH OF GOZO'S MOST IDYLLIC VILLAGE: GĦASRI

Discover the tranquil allure of Għasri village in Gozo, Malta's smallest gem. Delight in countryside strolls, Baroque architecture, scenic hikes, and turquoise waters. Unwind in cozy farmhouses for an authentic Gozitan escape amidst pastoral charm.

With fewer than 500 residents, Għasri village in Gozo is the smallest on the islands. Yet, its unparalleled charm makes it a mustvisit destination for holidaymakers and travellers exploring Gozo. If you relish countryside strolls, Għasri should be at the top of your itinerary, boasting the quintessential rural village experience.

The village’s name is believed to originate from ‘għasar,’ denoting the time between afternoon and evening, possibly evoking the tranquil ambience that envelops the village at dusk. However, Għasri is a delight to explore at any time of day!

Nestled between the hills of Żebbuġ and Għammar on an open swathe of land, the village presents a picturesque scene, with its cluster of houses surrounding the village church resembling an illustration from a storybook, even from a distance. As you approach Għasri, you will also be passing through the Gozitan countryside, with the Aqueducts adding to the scenic route. Once within Għasri’s confines, there are various routes and landmarks to note.

The Corpus Christi Parish Church, which was constructed more than a century ago, is a noteworthy example of Baroque architecture. Adorned with one grand dome and four smaller ones, this church’s design is attributed to the local priest Ġużepp Diacono. The focal point of the church is its titular altarpiece depicting The Last Supper of Christ, a masterpiece painted by Lazzaro Pisani, a renowned Maltese artist from the turn of the nineteenth century. Għasri celebrates the feast of Christ the Saviour in June.

A popular trek in Għasri involves ascending the hill hosting the Ta’ Ġordan Lighthouse. Upon reaching the summit, breathtaking scenic vistas await. Close to the recently restored and still operational lighthouse, erected in 1851, lies another significant landmark reminiscent of British colonial rule: the military observation point.

The winding path that guides you to Wied il-Mielaħ is a different hiking trail worth exploring. The natural stone arch gating the gorge of Wied il-Mielaħ has garnered attention in recent years. While many admire its stunning scenic vistas, the steep ravine area attracts extreme sports enthusiasts.

Exploring the coastline through hiking in this region presents a chance to marvel at the magnificent cliffs descending into the azure depths of the sea below. While some delight in the leisurely hike, others seek thrills by navigating the terrain on a mountain bike or gliding through on a

Segway. The route eventually leads to the saltpans area in Xwejni.

Indeed, one cannot overlook the allure of Wied il-Għasri. Irresistible in every weather condition, this Gozitan fjord exudes enchantment and has graced Gozitan postcards for over half a century. The captivating turquoise waters gently caressing the pebbled shore are truly mesmerizing. If you have a penchant for the underwater realm, we highly recommend dedicating some time to snorkelling here. Additionally, diving

enthusiasts should take note of Cathedral Cave, a diving site in the area, which is suitable for divers of all skill levels. While hiking the backstreets of Għasri, one cannot but notice the quaint country chapel. This serene sanctuary, dedicated to Our Lady of Patronage, was the first basilica in Gozo and tied to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The small village of Għasri boasts another tiny chapel, one that is dedicated to San Publius, the first bishop of Malta.

Staying in Għasri is never a bad idea for

an authentic Gozitan experience. If you have a fondness for the pastoral charm and rustic settings and crave the serenity of nature, Għasri offers precisely that— with the added bonus of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The village is dotted with farmhouses lovingly restored into cozy holiday accommodations.

You’ll undoubtedly relish the sensation of waking up and spending days in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

CELEBRATING TWO DECADES A BEACON OF PROGRESS AND

Leandro Borg, Director-General, European Union Coordination Department, Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade

On 1 May 2004, Malta embarked on a transformative journey by joining the European Union (EU), marking a major milestone in our rich and diverse history. This decision foretold the beginning of a new chapter characterized by development, opportunities, and an enhanced standing on the international stage. The commemoration of our nation’s twenty years of EU membership presents a timely opportunity to reflect on the multifaceted development fostered through this membership and the benefits that this union has bestowed upon the Maltese society.

One of the most visible benefits of Malta’s EU membership has been its robust economic growth. Access to the EU’s Single Market has altered the economic landscape, attracting foreign investment, not least in the gaming, financial services, and tourism sectors. The infusion of EU funds has also aided the acceleration of infrastructure development in Malta, enhancing transport and road networks, digital connectivity, and public services amongst other things. This infrastructural leap has not only improved the quality of life for the Maltese but has also made the islands more attractive to investment, thereby bolstering the economy and increasing job opportunities. The EU’s Cohesion Policy has always played an important role in enabling Malta to harness its full economic potential.

With access to the Digital Single Market, Maltese businesses expanded their horizons beyond local shores, leveraging digital technologies to venture into new markets. The EU’s focus on the digital economy has encouraged investments in high-speed internet infrastructure, fostering a conducive environment for tech startups and making Malta an attractive hub for digital innovation and the gaming industry. This digital transformation has led to enhanced service delivery in both public and private sectors, greatly benefiting the Maltese society.

EU membership has also significantly influenced Malta’s social fabric, introducing progressive policies and practices aimed at enhancing the quality of life and social welfare. From healthcare and education to consumer rights and environmental protection, the alignment with European standards has seen a marked improvement in the living standards. The benefits of seamless travel across the Schengen Area,

enhancing both professional and educational opportunities, have also been a game-changer, although much more remains to be done to ensure better and more permanent connectivity on all fronts and to complete the Single Market.

Membership has also thrust Malta into the forefront of environmental conservation and sustainable development within the Mediterranean region. The EU’s stringent environmental standards and policies have led to the implementation of several initiatives aimed at preserving Malta’s natural heritage, promoting renewable energy, and enhancing waste management. The struggle for environmental sustainability and the global fight against climate change are at the heart of all EU policy decisions being made, which is key to ensuring preservation for future generations.

In the two decades since accession, as a nation, we also embraced a deeper commitment to the core values that define the European identity. This alignment with European principles has significantly contributed to shaping the Maltese national identity within the context of its EU membership, reinforcing what it truly means to be 'European' for Maltese citizens.

During this period, Malta has become one of the top promotors of equality and civil liberties with its steadfast dedication to introducing progressive initiatives that have reduced disparities and promote social inclusion. As a nation we have embraced human rights, democracy and peace, and boldly embarked on an unprecedented transformative process, with reforms aimed at having a more resilient and open society built on the respect to fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.

Naturally, challenges always present themselves, especially for the smallest Member State. As with any significant shift, the adaptation to EU norms and regulations presents hurdles, especially when facing a one-size-fits all approach due to harmonisation efforts. But dedication, perseverance and commitment to the European values have resulted in these notable developments and laid the foundations for the prosperity that we enjoy today as a nation.

18 OH MY MALTA

DECADES OF MALTA IN THE EU: AND PROSPERITY

Looking ahead, we remain poised to continue making a success of our EU membership. As the Union finds itself at a critical juncture, the focus now shifts towards tackling more effectively contemporary challenges, such as achieving a just green, digital and social transformation, completing the Single Market and addressing geopolitical tensions that surround us. The foundation laid by two decades of membership provide a solid base from which Malta can navigate the future, firmly anchored in the European family yet distinct in its Mediterranean identity. The story of Malta and the EU is one of mutual growth, a beacon of how shared values and cooperation can lead to prosperity and progress for all.

UNRAVELLING THE RICH LEGACY OF THE MALTESE LANGUAGE

Exploring the rich tapestry of Maltese language, a unique blend of Semitic and Romance roots, reflecting Malta's diverse cultural legacy and serving as a symbol of national pride and resilience.

The Maltese language, a unique combination of Semitic, Romance, and other elements, is a tribute to the island's rich cultural legacy and a potent emblem of national identity. In this research, we will dig deeply into the Maltese language's origins, history, and importance, revealing the vast tapestry of cultures and civilizations that have moulded its unique character.

The Maltese language has its roots in ancient times, when it first arose as a Semitic dialect closely connected to Arabic. Malta's strategic location in the Mediterranean has attracted waves of conquerors and inhabitants over the ages, each leaving an unmistakable stamp on the linguistic landscape. Phoenician traders, Roman conquerors, Arab rulers, Norman knights, and Italian merchants all helped to shape the linguistic patchwork that formed modern-day Maltese.

One of the Maltese language's distinguishing qualities is its Semitic base, which is reflected in its lexicon, grammar, and syntax. Arabic loanwords pervade everyday language, reflecting Malta's centuries-long relationship with the Arab world. Arabic influence may be seen everywhere, from simple greetings and household goods to geographical

names and religious words, providing as a continuous reminder of Malta's cultural links to the Middle East.

The Maltese language, on the other hand, has a multifaceted history. Along with its Semitic roots, Maltese has a strong Romance component, mostly derived from Sicilian and Italian. When Norman and Sicilian monarchs arrived in the mediaeval period, Malta became a bulwark of Latin Christianity, ushering in a new age of linguistic assimilation and cultural interaction. Italian loanwords began to enter the Maltese lexicon, notably in areas like as government, religion, and commerce, expanding the language's vocabulary and expressive powers.

The amalgamation of Semitic and Romance components resulted in a distinct language identity that crossed cultural barriers and represented Malta's multicultural people. Throughout the centuries, the Maltese language evolved, absorbing elements from French, English, and other languages as Malta's key commercial hub drew merchants and travellers from all over the Mediterranean and beyond.

Today, the Maltese language is the only Semitic language written in Latin script, demonstrating its unique place in the linguistic landscape. Its diverse tapestry of influences reflects Malta's history as a crossroads of civilizations, where East meets West and the past intersects with the present. From the historic alleyways of Mdina to the bustling shops of Valletta, the Maltese language reverberates with the voices of countless generations, each adding to its lively and dynamic nature.

Aside from its linguistic significance, the Maltese language is important in building national identity and generating cultural pride. As Malta's official language, it acts as a uniting force that crosses ethnic, religious, and social boundaries, bringing individuals from many origins together under a shared linguistic heritage. From early nursery songs to political speeches and literary masterpieces, the Maltese language pervades every part of Maltese life, fostering feelings of camaraderie and belonging among its speakers.

Furthermore, the Maltese language is a potent symbol of tenacity and resistance, representing the character of a people that has faced centuries of occupation and colonisation. Despite foreign countries' attempts to restrict or marginalise the Maltese language, its speakers have resolutely conserved and promoted their linguistic legacy, ensuring that it remains a vital element of Malta's cultural identity. In recent years, attempts to revitalise and promote the Maltese language have gained traction, with projects aiming at conserving its rich linguistic past while also encouraging its ongoing usage in education, media, and public life.

As Malta embraces its position on the global arena and faces the difficulties of the twenty-first century, the Maltese language remains a source of strength, resilience, and cultural pride. It acts as a link between the past and the present, linking succeeding generations of Maltese to their common history, heritage, and identity. In a constantly changing world, the Maltese language exemplifies language's persistent capacity to form and define national destiny.

zejtun

Żejtun [zɛj tu n] is a thriving city located in the South Eastern Region of Malta, with a population of 11,218. The city, formerly known as Città Beland, was awarded by the Grandmaster of the Order of the Knights of Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim, in 1797. It has a rich historical past. Prior to this honour, the community was lovingly known as Casale Santa Caterina, after its patron saint and parish titular.

Bisqallin and Ħal Bisbut, the historic urban centres of Żejtun, proudly maintain its tiny mediaeval alleyways and ancient borders, providing as living testaments to its long past. Since the 19th century, Żejtun, also known as Casale Zeitoun, has been used to refer to the settlement centred on these two settlements. The Żejtun Local Council oversees the vibrant city of Żejtun and its surrounding minor hamlets. Żejtun experienced significant urbanisation in the 1970s and 1980s due to infrastructure and urban projects aimed at alleviating housing pressures in the neighbouring Three Cities area. This resulted in a significant increase in the town's population.

The name is derived from the Sicilian Arabic phrase for olive, zaytun, and honours one of Malta's traditional agronomic businesses. The Sicilian Arabic name zaytun refers to the olive tree's fruit, while the tree itself is called zabbūğ or zanbūğ. The Arabic origin of the town's name was confirmed by the first Maltese language dictionary, which defined Żejtun as a prosperous town in the eastern portion of Malta, comprising Bisqallin and the settlement of Bisbut.

Nowadays, Żejtun is a major hub on the Maltese archipelago, making significant contributions to the islands' history, culture and economy. Bulebel, one of the country's largest industrial parks, is located on the city's outskirts. Żejtun has various historical sites, including St. Catherine's Parish Church, St. Catherine's Old Church, votive chapels, and vestiges of a Roman villa. The parish of Żejtun is one of the oldest on the islands, with documents reaching back to 1436. The old parish church, erected in the 12th century and renovated in 1492, is still a significant religious and historical site.

Żejtun has been inhabited from prehistoric times and is strategically positioned between three ancient harbours: Marsa to the north, Marsaxlokk and Marsascala to the south. Remains from the Late Neolithic era, found near the megaliths of Ħal Ġinwi and the Tas-Silġ temple, demonstrate the area's ancient history. Excavations on the southern side of Żejtun revealed the remains of an old Roman villa with authentic tiling and coloured stucco, shedding light on the region's booming olive oil business.

The Feast of Żejtun, held yearly in honour of St. Catherine, is a cherished event that reflects the town's strong faith and communal spirit. The feast, held around the third Sunday in June, captivates both residents and visitors with its colourful processions, energetic band marches, and stunning fireworks displays. Żejtun's streets are decked with sculptures, banners, and floats honouring the town's patron saint. Festive gatherings, traditional music, and tasty local foods enhance to the joyful mood, providing a unique experience for everyone who participate in this centuries-old celebration of religion, togetherness, and cultural heritage.

Żejtun symbolises Malta's historical and cultural legacy, with its name invoking centuries of agricultural supremacy and Mediterranean beauty. Żejtun, with its ancient olive orchards and busy industrial estates, continues to influence the narrative of Malta's past and present, enticing tourists to explore its rich tapestry of history and tradition.

UNLOCKING THE SECRET OF PASTIZZI

Join Emily A. Francis for an unforgettable experience at ‘A Pastizzi Experience’ with host Michela in Sliema, learning the secrets of making Malta’s cherished pastizzi.

Welcome to “A Pastizzi Experience”!

What a treat to be invited into the home of our host, Michela in the heart of Sliema. Michela has created an in home immersion class offering how to make one of the oldest and most treasured traditional treats of Malta, the pastizzi.

Classically filled with either ricotta or mushy peas, this flaky and scrumptious little treat can accommodate as a meal, a snack or a dessert! As you walk the streets of Malta, one can find pastizzerias on just about every corner. However, learning the art and the secret behind making such a unique item is something that only Michala seems to be offering.

These items are usually kept in house to family trade secrets but with Michala’s background in tourism & culture and a history of being an English as a Foreign Language teacher (EFL) this was a natural progression for her to create. She is natural at teaching groups and can accommodate up to twelve people at one time. Book in advance though! She is not easy to get these days with a three month wait list!

What are some of the secrets I learned from Michala? For one, the dough of the pastizzi itself is made up of only three ingredients: flour, salt and water. I also learned that flour can be very temperamental so a 50/50 flour is her base of choice.

What is the medium used for the greasy texture of a pastizzi? That would be an entire block of margarine! Many years ago, lard was used. What is a secret spice added to the mushy peas? Curry.

What is a secret spice to the ricotta? I learned it…but it’s offered in her classes as an extra secret that brings out the fresh cheesy cream flavour…you’ll have to sign up and find out for yourself!

Next time you have a visitor or group of people you want to impress with an intimate, delightful learning experience that is fun and unique? This is your place to be!

MALTA RESTAURANT GUIDE:

PASTIZZI EDITION

While pastizzi may not be the healthiest option, their affordability, delicious taste, and convenience make them an irresistible choice for a quick snack or meal on the go. Whether you’re exploring the streets of Malta or lounging by the beach in Gozo, you’re bound to encounter these savoury pastries at every turn.

ROGERS, ŻEJTUN

Boasting around 80 years of experience, Roger’s Bakery in Zejtun is a beloved name in the southern region of Malta. Their pastizzi, made with vegetable butter instead of lard for a slightly healthier twist, stick to tradition while never failing to impress.

PREMIER, MOSTA

For the best pastizzi in Mosta, look no further than Premier. Their flaky pastry filled with flavourful peas and ricotta is a crowd-pleaser that won’t leave you feeling greasy. Grab a bite at one of the nearby benches near the Mosta Rotunda for a satisfying snack.

Peristyle, an eatery located round the corner from Serkin, offers a unique twist on the classic treat. While not listed on the menu, patrons can request pastizzi, which differ in shape from the traditional Maltese variety. Instead, these delightful pastries resemble small pies, filled with delicious ricotta cheese. When in Rabat, it’s worth trying both versions to experience the diverse interpretations of this beloved Maltese delicacy.

CAFFE CORDINA, VALLETTA

A social landmark in Valletta, Caffe Cordina offers a picturesque setting on Republic Square. Indulge in their ‘tax-xema’ pastizzi, recognisable by their round shape and puff pastry, for a lighter option that doesn’t skimp on flavour.

PERISTYLE, RABAT SERKIN, RABAT

Serkin, situated just outside Mdina, Malta’s historic former capital, stands as the go-to destination for freshly made pastizzi, beloved by locals and visitors alike. This iconic spot boasts an undeniable authenticity, drawing crowds of eager patrons seeking a taste of Maltese culinary tradition. While the service may be simple, the staff’s genuine enthusiasm for sharing insights into Maltese cuisine adds to the charm. For the full experience, patrons are encouraged to grab a takeaway bag and sample a variety of pastizzi, perfectly complemented by a refreshing bottle of Kinnie.
