Survey data from the Malta Tourism Authority indicates that 3% of tourists attributed films shot in Malta as the influencing factor for their choice of Malta as their destination. This means that one in every thirty-three people visiting Malta selected the destination because of locally filmed cinematic productions. This means that around 90,000 tourists per annum are attracted thanks to films shot in Malta, equivalent to over 500 arriving flights in a year.
Screen tourism in a growing phenomenon and may be subject of many contemporary studies.
The potential for screen-tourism in Malta, definitely exists as a growing number of tourists at least part of their travel decisionmaking process to include locality-based cinematic and television products which they have seen.
However, like most promotion in the marketing-inundated world we live in today, it becomes very difficult to isolate the curiosity aroused by productions filmed in a destination as a specific reason as to why the destination choice was made. Film-tourism is already important within the Maltese context because it is already influencing and attracting a relatively small but important segment of visitors.
It has great potential because, given the relatively low attention which it has been given until the last few years, the possibilities for growth are very strong.
Screen tourism is yet another phenomenon which will combine with other factors to assist Malta in attracting the right type of customers which it desires. It surely can help fine-tune the destination’s segmentation process aimed at maximising client satisfaction and encouraging return business. It involves synergising the relationship
between two existing service sectors in the Maltese economy and ensures that the traditionally short-term legacy associated with the filming of a production in the Maltese islands is extended indefinitely by being merged into the country’s tourism product.
We should be thinking about the constant creation of more resources which need to come into existence. This ranges from informative websites linking Malta to the rich audio-visual century-long history of moving pictures shot on location to links with famous actors, actresses, directors and movies, mobile apps to assist visitors to explore locations and a host of other infrastructural installations ranging from information boards to signposting.
Movie trails in popular localities such as Valletta, Mdina, Dwejra and even Comino could be developed to help visitors insert themselves into the alternative world temporarily created by the filming on location. There is also scope for an eventual movie museum which, amongst others, could feature props from Malta-filmed productions which are left behind when the filming is done.
The case of Popeye Village, a lasting legacy of a film which was relatively unsuccessful at its time of release but has now achieved something of a cult status given that it was actor Robin
Williams’ first feature film as a main actor is something to bear in mind when considering the value of props and sets left on location.

Have you ever felt the urge to experience the thrill of racing a car on a real track? Now’s your chance! Slip into the driver’s seat, buckle up, choose your gear, and press the accelerator to put your coordination skills to the test. Can you set the fastest lap time? Do you have what it takes to dominate your opponents and become Esplora’s racing car champion? Now is the time to show off your skills and compete against fellow enthusiasts with Esplora’s dynamic new addition.
The racing car simulator, now a permanent
exhibit at Esplora, is expected to push the boundaries of virtual racing. Designed to appeal to both youths and adults, the simulator which emulates a motorsport racing car will offer a unique and challenging experience to all thrill seekers out there!
Since the attraction is intended for a more mature audience, a height recommendation board has been set up to safeguard the participants’ health and safety. Visitors will be able to personalise the duration of their experience in 5-minute increments. Participants are instructed to follow all safety precautions, as any ensuing damage resulting from misconduct or negligence may lead to session termination without the possibility of a refund. Any refunds will be issued at Esplora’s discretion, and staff will endeavour to reschedule any sessions which had to be abandoned due
to technical issues. Refunds will, however, not be issued in respect of any prepaid increments which have not been utilised.
The simulator is an optional add-on which will be charged on top of the entrance fee to the Science Centre. The racing car simulator operates on a pay-per-use basis, and payments can either be affected through the POS system at the Esplora reception, or directly at a dedicated point in the simulator area. Visitors are free to decide on the duration of their experience and they will also have the option to add 5-minute increments to the initial standard ride, an incentive which offers the visitor flexibility based on personal preference and budget.

Summer in Gozo is anything but boring. If you are spending time on the island this summer, check out the dazzling array of events lined up over the season. Even if you’re dedicating your whole day to leisure and spending your days by the pool, it’s good to know that Gozo’s summer are primarily about entertainment under the starry sky.
All Week-Long Extravaganza of Gozo Events
Head to Marsalforn on Mondays for ‘Marsalforn Mondays’ for a musical vibe that will appeal to different tastes. On Tuesdays, Victoria welcomes with talented artists who will be performing in St. George’s Square or Independence Square.
The villages of Qala and Xagħra will be the place to be (on alternate weeks) on Wednesdays, where a mix of local performers will bring the square alive with their music. Mġarr Fridays will is about the picturesque harbour scene and music will mark the evening. For another typical village experience, take note of Summer in the Square, which takes place in Xewkija under the gaze of the Rotunda. Alternatively, head to Nadur (every other Saturday), where a captivating atmosphere will surely entertain.
The weekend is also associated with the I LOVE Xlendi events. Do not miss out on the fjakkolata on Sunday evening, when traditional fire torches are lit around the bay. All the above events will be held from July to mid-September, ensuring that Gozo provides a full calendar of events for locals and visitors alike. More entertainment for the whole family will be organised in Għajnsielem (Saturdays & Sundays) and St Lawrence (Saturdays) during the summer months.
Village Feast Furore
Gozo’s quintessential summer core revolves around the village feast honouring the patron saints. Every week, a different village holds its annual feast, a celebration that takes on many forms and aspects. The essence of these celebrations is the religious aspects that honour the saint’s life, escalating with the triduum and culminating in the solemn pontifical mass and procession with the statue on Sunday.
However, the village feast is also about street parties, the village’s traditional street dinner and a spectacle of street decor, band marches, concerts,
and fireworks displays. Some feasts, such as the Inforiata held in Għarb, even have extra flair. Firework enthusiasts will recognise Gozo’s prowess in the prepared fireworks displays, some even synchronised to music.

During August, the DCapitals Band will celebrate a decade of music with an open-air concert in the Cittadella Ditch. Another delightful evening for this season is the traditional dinner in St Augustine’s Square in Victoria, which delightfully blends with the melodies of Malta’s celebrated violinist George Curmi,’ Il-Puse’.

Beyond all the above, Gozo promises more activities for young and old alike. Xewkija will hold the Gozo Food Food Festival in July and a fun day of activities aimed at children at the windmill
in Xewkija. An exhibition of motor vehicles will be held in Qala. Other July activities include an outdoor cinema screening of the musical film Beauty and the Beast, a traditional dinner complete with Kummitiva dance in Xagħra, and the 1551 Siege Commemoration in Victoria.
August is overflowing with events. exhibitions, the Gozo Ceramics Festival, the Delicata Wine Festival, the Qbajjar Beer Festival, the Gozo Traditional Agricultural & Industrial Exhibition and the Gozo Film Festival, are only some of the activities that are being organised, and there is no doubt that more events will keep on sprouting throughout the season.
Events will be going strong during September until summer winds down. The Wine, Olive Oil, and Honey Festival associated with Għasri will be held on 14 September, and Fontana will have a wine festival.

San Pawl il-Baħar, the local name for St. Paul's Bay, is derived from the biblical character Saint Paul, who is said to have been shipwrecked on the island in 60 AD. This incident establishes Malta as one of the first locations in Christian history and is recorded in the Bible's Acts of the Apostles. The town's rich historical fabric encompasses the Phoenician, Roman, and Arab eras, all of which had a profound influence on its architecture and culture. Malta's illustrious past can still be seen in the remains of old villages and defensive buildings, and the monument of St. Paul overlooking the harbour is a moving reminder of the country's ongoing Christian tradition.

Consular officials, both those based in Malta and abroad, work by engaging and building networks while staying up to date on local situations and understanding what the best practices are when it comes to travel. This way, the Ministry can provide better support to Maltese nationals living or travelling abroad.
Maltese nationals enjoy the right to seek consular assistance either from Head Office or from any of the 42 Maltese Embassies and Consulates around the world. In addition to this, Malta is also represented in numerous other countries through Honorary Consulates. Consular work covers a lot of ground, from helping Maltese nationals abroad in distress, to issuing passports and visas, legalizing documents, and assisting with lost or stolen travel documents, accidents, illnesses, arrests, deaths, repatriation of human remains, and other emergencies.
To make consular services more accessible and more convenient to Maltese citizens, the Ministry recently launched ConsularPlus, an online web portal that provides information on all available consular
services offered by the Maltese Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade. ConsularPlus can be especially useful when travellers plan for their next trip by providing information on the closest Maltese representation to the next destination, as well as the closest emergency services including hospitals and police stations, should these be required.
On ConsularPlus one may also access travel advice which is available for all countries around the globe. The Travel advice provides detailed information on the destination’s security situation, any information concerning precautions one should take with regards to health and safety, as well as any other useful information which one may need to know before travelling to a destination. This may include, but is not limited to, visa requirements to entering the travel destination. The latter applies especially for countries outside of the European Union. Travel advice for each country is updated regularly and is based on continuous research done by the consular officers at the DCSMLA as well as the input provided by the Maltese missions abroad. Moreover, one may subscribe to a country of their interest and receive email notifications any time a travel advice is updated.
On ConsularPlus, one may also find the ‘Traveller’s Guide’ which provides handy information on preparations one should make before travelling by listing a checklist, as well as the steps to take in case
