Letter from the Editor Hi, Oceanside High School Key Club! It's the most wonderful time of the year! Happy holidays to everyone who celebrates, and if not, enjoy your break! I love being a part of Key Club's holiday events- they're our busiest time of the year, but they also allow us to spread joy and cheer throughout our school and our community. Personally, I enjoy Door Decorating the most because it's so much fun to spend the last weeks of school before the Winter Break walking through the halls in a school whose doors are decorated with wrapping paper- it just adds to the spirit of the season. Besides this, I've been working hard on finishing up my college applications and enjoying the end of the year. I can't believe 2019 is almost here! In this edition of the Oceanside High School Key Club newsletter, I will be hiding snowmen throughout, so try and find them all! Have a great holiday and a happy new year! Yours in service, Tiffany Chou

DecEMbeR DivISiOnaL

Key Club officers attended the December Divisional in Long Beach, hosted by our District Liaison, Hugh-Jay Yu, and were presented with the Membership Retention Award that we earned at the 2018 Leadership Training Conference. We also learned about LTC and other upcoming events for the year. It was so much fun getting to talk with members and officers from other clubs!

As a senior member in Key Club, I’ve been able to take part in many events. One event that is very memorable to me is holiday door wrapping. This event was especially fun this year because Model Congress was able to join us. Also some sailor athletes got involved and helped out at the event. The holiday door wrapping event occurs two weeks before winter break one day after school for a few hours depending on the amount of volunteers. The more volunteers, the merrier since the event goes more efficiently. During the Key Club meeting prior to the event, the officers discuss the opportunity to bring in rolls of wrapping paper for an hour per roll. Since our school is religiously diverse, all different types of wrapping paper are used including Hanukkah, Winter, and Christmas. The announcement generates the event’s popularity since students appreciate the holiday season and especially seeing the holiday spirit in full force at school. Teachers, faculty, and staff donate a certain amount of money per door which then goes to Key Club’s funds every year that is put towards the trip to the convention in Upstate New York. Each group of students are assigned a door to wrap, I found this especially significant as I got my English teacher’s door. I looked forward to seeing my efforts the following day as I walked into class and continued to appreciate the holiday cheer as I saw the door everyday till winter break. Some groups do a better job than others since wrapping the doors is harder than it seems. Also since the school environment is uniform in structure, the decorations aid in making the environment more lively. I make sure to take part in the event every year because it is a wonderful addition to the holiday season. I see students have smiles on their faces as they continue enjoying the busy holiday season by sparing a minimal amount of time to help out by wrapping the doors. I would like to thank everybody who helped wrap doors this past holiday season and I encourage the student body to get involved in this decorative event. -Marisa Mastropieri, Key Club Senior

I have been a member of Key Club for the past three years and have taken part in numerous activities over the years. One of the most memorable events I have volunteered at was a local community event called Holiday Happenings. It is put together by our local Kiwanis during a Saturday in the month of December that is full of fun activities for the children. I have vivid memories of this event as a child and it has been exciting to see the other side of it as a teenager. I enjoy watching the excitement rise on the faces of the children as they enter the building. There are games and art projects set up all around the gym. Our job as Key Club members is to help run the games such as the bean bag toss and art projects such as spin art. An infamous activity that many of the children enjoy each year is the cookie decorating. They get to decorate a sugar cookie with sprinkles and frosting that serves as a perfect snack. Over in the auditorium is a holiday sing along with a special appearance from Santa Claus. Our high school chorus performs an interactive holiday sing along that gets everyone in the holiday spirit. Holiday Happenings is a major part of everyone’s holiday season. I look forward to giving the same joy that I once felt back to the families of Oceanside. As a senior I am appreciative of my time in Key Club and hope to continue my community service endeavors in the future. -Angelina Fazio, Key Club Senior

Letters to Santa EACH YEAR, THE OCEANSIDE KEY CLUB RESPONDS TO "LETTERS TO SANTA" SUBMITTED BY THE KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITY! THEY PLACE THE LETTERS IN SANTA'S MAILBOX OUTSIDE OF THE OCEANSIDE LIBRARY, AND OHS STUDENTS WRITE A RESPONSE TO EACH LETTER!

"Whenever anyone was unselfish, that was Santa Claus. Christmas Eve was the time when everybody was unselfish. On that one night, Santa Claus was everywhere, because everybody, all together, stopped being selfish and wanted other people to be happy. And in the morning you saw what that had done." ADVISOR SPOTLIGHT: Mrs.DeJose

This year is Mrs. DeJose's third year as an advisor for the Oceanside High School Key Club. She is an amazing advisor- she is always willing to help the board or members out with any questions they may have, she is dedicated to the club, and she works hard to help increase the impact the OHS Key Club has on our community. Mrs. DeJose can always be found with a smile on her face, and we appreciate all the hard work and energy she puts into the club! Thank you so much for everything!

DECEMBER THEME:

WHAT ARE WAYS YOU CAN HELP IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR COMMUNITY? Talk about it. Ask people how they’re doing and mean it! Always be ready to listen and encourage. Ask questions and never judge. Share your story. Have you personally struggled or currently struggle with mental illness? Don’t hesitate to tell friends and family about it. Your story can encourage others to ask for help. Read about it. Educate yourself about mental illness and suicide. Learn about the signs and symptoms and where to receive help in your area. Talk to loved ones about how they are feeling. Regularly check in with those close to you, especially if you know they are dealing with a mental illness. Share mental health screening sites on social media. Facebook and Twitter are great places to spread mental health awareness. Volunteer with local mental health awareness organizations. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a great place to start. Be a supportive friend. Sometimes spreading mental health awareness can simply mean supporting and listening to those close to us. Watch out for bullying at school or in the office. Bullying can lead to many difficulties including depression. Be aware of destructive behavior around you and report it to a trusted adult when necessary.
