2021 brought new, unexpected challenges and was no less demanding than 2020. Only that the challenges were completely different! Companies were “up against the wall” in the middle of the year due to rising prices of raw materials and materials, more expensive energy, and rising wage costs. Research by the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers showed that the increase in raw material prices in the middle of the year reached 25-33%, and this was not the end of the increases. There was no other option and the industry had to raise product prices. This was compounded by disruptions to supply chains for customers in Western Europe and the United States. However, despite the furniture price increases that were necessary in this difficult situa tion, the Polish furniture industry’s offer has remained competitive and Polish furniture has continued to be attractive for customers. It is worth mentioning here that the increase in furniture production was faster than the increase in employment, which means an improvement in the efficiency of our factories.

Of course, we are concerned about the sustainability of the current strong demand trend and the consequences of high inflation, and these are not the only risks on the horizon. Polish manufacturers today have to monitor the situation globally, and things like power shortages in Asia translate into reduced availability of the paints and dyes used in the production of fabrics from which we later make upholstered furniture.

We now have nearly two years of fighting the SARS-COV-2 pandemic under our belts. Fighting an “opponent” we did not know before and who has changed our world beyond recognition. Practically from one day to the next, we had to re-learn how to manage our businesses, how to plan in very uncer tain times, often not knowing what the immediate future would bring.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you that the coming year will be a year of busi ness stability for all of us, giving us a sense of broadly understood business and health security, which we will use as an impulse for further dynamic development of our companies and the Polish furniture industry.

Despite the aforementioned obstacles, we are ending 2021 on an optimistic note. We ex pected an increase in production, but the result with which we end the year has exceeded our wildest expectations. Employment in the industry has returned to pre-pandemic levels, i.e. around 165 000 FTEs and nearly 200 000 workers. We have increased production and exports to key markets in the industry. For example, exports to the United States, where the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers has opened an exhibition of Polish furniture-making, increased by as much as 26%. On top of this, Polskie furniture will record an unprecedented combined production and export growth of 21% in 2021, which translates into an approximately 10 billion PLN increase compared to 2020. The value of sold production will be close to 60 billion PLN!

Poland manufactures all types of furniture, allowing to differentiate and adapt the products both in terms of available materials and their finish and design. The Polish furniture industry certainly uses high quality materials and components, and we have access to the latest technolo gies as well.

Recent years have proved that Poland is the global leader in the production and export of furniture, especially in the context of the prevailing SARS-COV-2 pandemic. The high quality of the furniture manufactured in Poland and still relatively low labour costs are the main factors contribut ing to this success. In addition, the many years’ tradition and efforts of large, medium-sized and small enterprises should not be forgotten. Data on production prove the success of the Polish furniture sector, and recently the country has moved up the global ranking of furniture manufacturers – from 10th to 6th position.

The Polish furniture sector ranks second (after Italy) in terms of registered companies selling fur niture. More than 30 thousand entities are involved in the manufacture of furniture in Polandmore specifically, at the end of 2020, the number was 30,919 companies. Out of these, 84 entities are large companies with more than 250 employees, 290 entities are medium-sized companies (50–249 employees), 1,254 are small companies and 29,291 account for micro-enterprises with less than 10 employees. Export is without doubt the major driving force for the Polish furniture sector. In 2020, Poland ranked 2nd in the global furniture manufacturers’ ranking due to its exports accounting for EUR 11.1 bn. According to the data published by UNO, as regards the value of export, in 2020 Poland was overtaken by China (USD 70 bn).

The furniture industry remains one of the most significant sectors of the Polish economy. According to estimates by B+R Studio in 2020, the value of sold products of furniture companies amounted to PLN 50,6 bn (including micro-enterprises with less than 10 employees). According to the fore casts by B+R Studio, the value of products sold by the furniture industry in 2021 will account for PLN 59,5 bn (including micro-enterprises).

Opportunities for the Polish furniture sector

Over the last nine years, the value of export of Polish furniture increased by more than 96%. Ac cording to the forecasts by B+R Studio, in 2021 the value of furniture export from Poland will exceed EUR 12.9 bn.

POLAND

Germany has been the main importer of Polish furniture for many years – EUR 4.419 mln. Export to the Czech Republic, the second largest importer, reached EUR 946 mln. Further positions are occupied by the UK and France.

2020 is the year in which exports from Poland have been limited by the Covid-19 pandemics. According to Eurostat the value of export in Euro fell by 3%, accounting for EUR 11.1 bn.

Poland is one of the fastest growing countries in terms of furniture production. Its perfect geographical location near the wealthy Western European countries gives it competitive advantage over many other countries. Its long tradition and well established position among recipients of furniture in Europe give the Polish furniture manufacturers customers’ trust and brand awareness. Additionally, the opportunities of the Polish furniture sector include that of a greater share in the markets of developed countries and emerging markets.

In December 1993, a Founding Group met and appointed the Organizing Committee from among its members. The Committee was composed of representatives of the following furniture manufactur ers: Meblarska spółdzielnia pracy “DąB” from Gdynia, Fabryki Mebli “MEBLEX” from Łęka Opatowska, Wielkopolskie Fabryki Mebli in Oborniki, swarzędzkie Fabryki Mebli, Jarocińskie Fabryki Mebli and “pol skie Meble” from poznań, Fabryki Mebli “FORTE” from Ostrów Mazowiecka. The Committee, developed a concept of the relevant organization operations, selecting a status of a Chamber of Commerce under the name of the polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers.

The mission of the polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers is the integration of the polish furniture sector in order to effective participation in the formation of the development of the polish furniture sector active promotion of the polish furniture in the country and abroad, and supporting of endeavours to warrant consumers full satisfaction of the buying and using of the polish furniture goods.

Over the years, OIGpM has been intensively involved in developing a reliable system that facilitates trade for furniture companies, and offers new opportunities for partnerships abroad.

An initiative to establish an Economic s elf-government in the furniture industry was born in 1993.

» Conducting the work and providing research services regarding the furniture market and public opinion, including developing and publishing specialized market reports. The reports are prepared using our own analysis, based on official domestic or foreign data sources. s tudies also include the preparation of forecasts of the analyzed elements of the market.

» Represent and protect the interests of the associated business entities before the state and selfgovernment administration of all levels,

» protect the business interests of its associated entities,

» providing of organizational and legal services, consulting and information in the field of business and management.

» Advertising activities.

» Activities connected with organization of exhibitions and trade fairs.
