This reflects badly on the industry as a whole, we therefore think it is extremely important that best practice is championed from top to bottom and the Awards are a platform to promote to the press and public the great work being done. uest of Honor at the Rocky Mountain Oil & Gas Awards was Mike King. Mike King has led the Department of Natural Resources since 2010, navigating the agency through significant reorganization, regulatory accomplishments and landscapescale protection under the direction of Governor John Hickenlooper. As Executive Director of DNR, King guided the creation of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a merger of two previously stand-alone divisions that serves as an important example of Governor Hickenlooper’s efforts to shape a more efficient state government. Prior to his employment in the Executive Director’s Office, Mike worked in the Policy and Regulation Section at the Colorado Division of Wildlife for six years and was an Assistant Attorney General from 1993-1999.

Some of the highlights from Mike King’s keynote address: “Tonight we celebrate the success of the industry; because what we understand is that the technology is astounding that this industry has developed over the years. It has allowed for the extraction of our oil and gas resources and the movement of those resources to market in ways that we could have never imagined. Proving The Numbers: How Workforce Housing Can Drive ROI Through Workforce Productivity Brian Lash, CEO, Target Logistics

Countless studies show the benefits happy, safe and rested employees experience when they achieve the proper work/life balance. Companies in the oil and gas industry can pad their bottom lines, as well, by delivering that experience through quality workforce housing, according to Brian Lash, CEO of Target Logistics.

“By choosing a professional workforce housing provider, you’ll get a substantial return on your investment because your workers will be well-fed, well-rested and energized through quality fitness and recreation,” Lash told attendees of the Oil & Gas Awards Industry Summit in Denver. “This investment in quality life support will increase your bottom line.” According to Lash, the most important aspect of workforce housing is the food prepared for employees. In his presentation entitled “Proving the Numbers: How workforce housing can drive ROI through workforce production,” Lash cited statistics from the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, which said workers who ate nutritionally will be 20 percent more likely to have higher job performance. “The guys and gals that come off a fracking job or out of a copper mine – all they can think about is their next meal,” Lash said. “And it’s gotta be a great meal. Not a good meal, but a great meal. And it’s gotta be all-youcan-eat. And it’s gotta have nutritious alternatives. It’s gotta have protein. It’s gotta have carbs. And it has to be planned out by nutritionists.” It is also vital to keep employees wellrested. Lash said the same journal claimed insufficient sleep leads to significantly worse productivity

and safety outcomes on the job. Lash also said sleepy workers cost the American economy $136 billion a year, which is more than the state GDPs of Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine combined. To address this need, Target Logistics outfits each of its residences with its own Hibernator Sleep System, which includes a bed with a solid-wood base, pillow-top mattress, overstuffed pillows, poly-filled comforter and 300-threadcount sheets and pillowcases. Fitness and recreation is another key component of quality workforce housing. Keeping employees fit can reduce absenteeism by 22 percent. “Absenteeism is a huge cost to all companies in America and throughout the world,” he said. “If you can reduce your absenteeism by 22 percent, you do it. And by providing quality of life support, you can reduce your absenteeism.” Lastly, Lash insisted that companies maintain a zero-tolerance policy by banning drugs, alcohol, weapons, pets and guests. “It sounds harsh, but we’ve been doing this a long time,” he said. “If you go and read articles about any tragedies that happen in ‘man camps,’ I guarantee that one, two, three or four of those were violated or contributed to whatever accident or death that ever occurred.”

Target Logistics conducted a case study for one of its facilities last year to determine the effectiveness of its workforce housing. One of the company’s clients consolidated all their workers to Target Logistics’ lodges after previously housing 50 percent with Target and the rest at other residences throughout the region. After the consolidation, the client had a 50 percent reduction in workplace injuries. “For a large public company whose stock is trading every day, this is a crucial and important aspect to the way they run their workplaces and to the way they treat their employees,” Lash said. The client also increased its employee retention rate from 50 percent to 83 percent. With 1,000 employees, the client lost 130 fewer people in just one year. Considering the average cost of recruiting and training a new employee is estimated at $35,000 in Canada and the United States, according to Lash, Target’s client saved $11 million just by providing quality workforce housing. “Everybody likes to feel embraced, everybody likes an, ‘Atta boy,’ everybody wants to feel that their company loves them and cares about them – and this is one way you can show them,” Lash said. “The fact is high quality workforce housing could be a difference-maker contributing to your bottom line.”

Drilling and Completions There aren’t many steps left to eliminate from the processes of drilling and completing wells to cut costs and time. However, efficiency can be found in better logistical planning for drilling and completions, and knowing the reservoir will eliminate unnecessary stages, as well. “Understanding our reservoir better is giving us the opportunity to do a better design,” Ola Akrad, Vice President for Engineering and Technology at Austin Exploration Ltd., said during a panel discussion on drilling and completions at the Oil & Gas Awards’ Industry Summit in Denver. “Not necessarily more stages, but knowing where to place those stages is also a key issue.” As operators first transitioned from conventional to unconventional reservoirs, they applied the same technologies to various plays throughout the United States although the geology varied greatly. Now that the unconventional era is a few years old, these same operators realize rock in the different plays have varied characteristics that must be approached differently. “We’re starting to begin to understand exactly how the rock breaks,” said Kevin Tanner, Project Completions Engineering Advisor for Anadarko Petroleum Corp. “I think it’s not here yet, but I think you’re going to see changes in the future to help unlock more oil and gas in unconventional reservoirs.” Aside from differences between shale regions like Bakken and Niobrara, there’s plenty of different rock to consider in a single well bore,

according to Tim Willems, President USA and International Operations for NCS Energy Services. For instance, NCS Services has one horizontal well in the Fayetteville Shale in Arkansas that has required 50 different fractures. “The difference in information in parts of that well bore is very different,” Willems says. “The more understanding we have, the more efficient we can become by draining the reservoir better than we are today because we are definitely leaving some production behind.” To get a better idea of the rock type, microseismic data can be a helpful tool. It gives operators a better idea of how the fracture should be initiated within a certain type of rock. This is a good start for the industry, but Akrad admits the industry needs to conduct more research on rock types. “It has a lot to do with the natural fractures that were present in the reservoir,” she said. “Another thing we take into consideration is the long-term conductivity and what’s happening in the rock because that has a lot of impact, especially with the shale mineralogy of the unconventional.” Although rock research is still in its infancy, planning efficient logistics can be accomplished long before a drill hits the ground. Tanner said

Anadarko has changed its material management strategy to maintain its supplies and equipment in one central location. Much of this can be accomplished through pad drilling. Tanner said in combination with horizontal drilling, much of the cost can be eliminated. “Lowering costs really turns into driving efficiencies and trying to plan things in a more efficient manner,” Tanner says. “It’s the horizontal well that’s been the big benefit by being able to reach out and touch a whole lot of reservoir from a single well bore. You’ve essentially eliminated 10 wells with one horizontal well, and having everything centralized give you the opportunity to be efficient without having to move things around the field.”

An Overview Of The Environmental Regulations Affecting Air, Water And Rail Greg Lorson, Chief Executive Officer, TEEMCO

There is no doubt the word “regulations” garners a variety of reactions when uttered among oil and gas industry executives. It doesn’t have to be that way, though, according to Greg Lorson, CEO of TEEMCO. He believes when handled appropriately, regulations are simply another aspect of the business, and the industry should work toward getting in front of local, state and federal agencies to avoid too much regulation.

“I’m very sympathetic to being opposed to overregulation,” Lorson told his colleagues at the Oil & Gas Awards Rocky Mountain Industry Summit in Denver. “But if we look at what’s driving regulations and what will continue to drive regulations, we need to look at if there’s really a problem or not.” There is no doubt that spills are possible, and with production increasing as it has in the United States, the statistical risk for spills has increased, as well. Lorson said it is incumbent on the industry to continue to be diligent in spill preparation and prevention. With the Keystone XL and other pipeline projects on hold, crude transport by rail continues to grow. Lorson said 10 years ago, there were 10,000 railcars transporting crude oil. In the first quarter of 2013 alone, there were over 300,000. As a result, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released an emergency order earlier this year requiring the testing of crude shipments for flash point, boiling point, corrosivity to steel and for sulfur hydrogen percentages, among other characteristics.

Rail transport spilled 27,000 barrels of crude in 2013 – pipelines spilled three times that amount. However, pipelines move a lot more oil than rail does.

Some might consider this order the railroad industry’s problem, but it is quite the opposite – of the 100,000 railcars dedicated to transporting crude oil, 99 percent are owned by the oil and gas industry, according to Lorson. The alternative, of course, is pipeline infrastructure, which oftentimes is held up as the safer alternative for crude transport. The statistics are misleading for this argument, according to Lorson. He asked the oil and gas industry to create some standards and voluntarily comply with them to make transportation by rail safe. “So my thought is if the industry does respond that way, then we may be able to mitigate overregulation as far as rail transportation,” Lorson said. “As an industry, we’ve got to face the anti-oil lobby and we’ve got to earn our social license to operate. Largely we can do that by voluntary compliance and best practices.”

“So we’d have to really take a hard look at that before we can declare which one is safer,” Lorson said. “Pipeline takes a lot longer to build, so for the foreseeable future, I think we’re going to continue to see an

Environmental Protection, Regulation and Compliance Colorado has a reputation within the oil and gas industry of being one of the most highly regulated oil- and gas-producing states in the union. However, municipal and county regulatory agencies as well as the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) make working within the state as easy as possible while maintaining stringent regulations. “I would say that Colorado is strict, but not restrictive,” Greg Lorson, CEO of TEEMCO, said during the “Environmental Protection, Regulation and Compliance” panel discussion at the Oil & Gas Awards Industry Summit in Denver. “Colorado is on the tougher side, but I haven’t heard any of our clients make a comment like, ‘We’re moving out of Colorado because we can’t operate under these conditions.’ And there are some other states where I’ve heard that.”

COGCC often creates mandates stauncher than EPA standards, which is an uncommon practice in the United States, according to Megan Davis, Vice President Regulatory, Summit Midstream Partners LP. The state also has the best protocols for its regulation changes and updates.

“The general requirement when states are implementing EPA regulations is that they need to be on par with or stricter than the EPA, and most states just go with on par with,” Davis said. “As compared to other states in which we operate, I think Colorado has the strictest air requirements. But they are also well-communicated and well-developed, so that makes them easier to comply with. We know what we’re dealing with.” An example of Colorado’s stringent regulatory reputation is its new Regulation 7, which concerns the control of ozone via ozone precursors and control of hydrocarbons via oil and gas emissions. According to Bryan Burns, Environmental, Health and Safety Representative for LINN Energy, this mandate is expected to decrease volatile organic compound emissions by 92,000 tons a year, which is equivalent to all of the cars in Colorado being removed from the roads for an entire year. Davis said this exceeds air regulations set by the EPA, as well. While this is a good mandate for the environment, Burns said momand-pop operators that populate rural communities may struggle with implementing it. He estimates costs

to comply with the mandate between $30 million and $80 million. “I think for smaller operators, that cost that’s been thrown out with complying with this regulation is really going to hit them the hardest,” Burns said. “How you roll out a regulation like that and phasing it, for example, will really allow the entire industry as a whole to come to the table and successfully comply with the new regulation.” Even if Colorado is able to better develop and communicate its regulations to oil and gas operators, the costs associated with compliance can become a hindrance. Lorson may not have clients leaving the state due to the regulatory climate, but Burns admitted his E&P company hasn’t had a rig operating in Colorado for the last five or six years due in part to the amount of regulations. “All of our assets throughout the country are constantly competing for capital to put a rig in your area,” Burns said. “I think it is a consideration companies make internally about where to invest your capital and where to expand.”

Are We Losing the Public’s Confidence? The oil and gas industry constantly faces scrutiny from the general public about environmental sensitivity, community disruption and safety. However, the industry is taking steps to change its reputation, and communities take notice when operators are willing to work with residents to address their concerns.

Representatives of the oil and gas industry in the Rocky Mountain region explained how they brought jurisdictions and operators to the same page during the panel discussion entitled “Community Engagement: Are We Losing the Public’s Confidence” at the Oil & Gas Awards’ Industry Summit in Denver. The town of Erie, Colo., was held up as a model jurisdiction for communities that seek to engage oil and gas operators in their regions. Matt Lepore, Director of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, praised Erie and its town Administrator, A.J. Krieger, for its novel approach to working with companies like Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Encana Corp. instead of imposing moratoriums. “I think the moratoriums are fairly blunt instruments,” Lepore said. “I give credit to Erie for sort of setting a precedent for this idea of, ‘Let’s sit down with the operators who do business here, express to them our specific concerns, and see if we can find solutions.’” Krieger said this is just part of what he considers to be his jurisdiction’s responsibility to its citizens. If operators and communities can come to agreements outside of the courtroom, everyone wins. “We’ve entered into agreements with Anadarko and Encana that I think strike a balance as opposed to a mandate that required things like additional fugitive emission recovery as well as operational aspects on the sites, yet 30

not impose undue burdens,” Krieger said. “It’s a good model, and it has put us in stark contrast with some of the communities around us.” Once operators are up and running, it’s best for companies to become involved in the communities where they work. There are numerous ways for companies to accomplish this no matter the size of the organization. As a smaller operator, Enerplus Resources (USA) Corp. takes a more hands-on approach to community interfacing. Jessie Koerner, Communications and Public Affairs Coordinator for Enerplus, said her company focuses on working with Native Americans who live on the reservation where it operates by showing grade school children the ins and outs of the business and how education could get them a goodpaying job in the future. “We have to be in the community interfacing with them because we don’t have the money to write a check and build a hospital,” Koerner said. “I think it is more effective as an operator to get out there and interface regardless of the amount of money you have to spend on community relations.” A company like Anadarko may have deeper pockets, but it also focuses on interacting with community members face-to-face. Amy Venturi, Director of Social Investment for Anadarko, admitted her company sponsors a variety of events, but Anadarko’s 1,500 employees in Colorado logged more

than 30,000 volunteer hours in 2013, as well. “For us, it’s about putting a face on the industry, and it’s not just about writing the check,” Venturi said. “It’s about connecting and engaging, and it’s also a way for us to get out there to talk about who we are and what we do.” It’s one thing to connect with communities when things are going well. But it takes another type of interaction in crisis situations, and northern Colorado dealt with a flooding tragedy six months ago that tested the mettle of the oil and gas industry. However, Chris McGowne, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Colorado Oil & Gas Association (COGA), praised the state’s oil and gas industry, which he said responded with water, food and more than $3 million in aid. “They felt it was their responsibility and felt it would be a good avenue to give back to the community, especially since the community has given back so much to the industry,” McGowne said. COGA was able to distribute information to community members influenced by the floods through its Facebook and Twitter accounts. Social media also gave the association a way to keep tabs on developments in the community during dire scenarios. “It helps us keep us on the forefront of these folks’ minds to remind them that the industry is trying to be a good neighbor and good partner,” McGowne said.

The U.S. crude oil market isn’t concentrated in the same areas like it was 25 years ago. The production that once came from Alaska’s North Slope and California has been replaced by a variety of sources, especially the Rocky Mountain region.

Infrastructure has not kept up with that shift, however, countless barrels of oil have difficulty finding their way out of the region, according to James Burke, President and CEO of High Sierra Energy LP – a subsidiary of NGL Energy Partners LP. In his keynote address “State of the Rockies Midstream – Production Acceleration Outpaces Infrastructure,” Burke told attendees of the Oil & Gas Awards Industry Summit in Denver that midstream companies like his are ready to deliver solutions to the infrastructure shortage. “Superior economics of the Rockies oil plays continue to incentivize robust E&P activity to a great degree,” Burke said. “The midstream constraints are being solved. They aren’t solved today, but they will be.”

The Rocky Mountain region once accounted for 7 percent of the nation’s U.S. crude oil production – today, it produces 20 percent, according to Burke. “Basically, we plan to add another 1.1 million barrels a day by 2018,” Burke says. “So since January of ’06, we’ve gone from 500,000 barrels a day to 2.5 million by the end of 2018 production.”

The Rocky Mountain region once accounted for 7 percent of the nation’s U.S. crude oil production – today, it produces 20 percent, according to Burke.

That is a tall order considering the massive shift the U.S. crude oil industry has experienced in just a few short years. U.S. crude production is up 1.8 million barrels per day in just the last 24 months, and the industry has reduced the declines of the past 25 years in just three years.

Burke warned that infrastructure needs are not in place for that type of boost in production yet. He said the refineries in PAD District 4 are at capacity, so it is up to the midstream sector to deliver solutions to bring Rocky Mountain crude oil to other markets.

In the Rocky Mountain region, crude oil production has doubled from what it was back in 1989. Most of that growth stems from North Dakota, where production has jumped from

[Okla.], Gulf Coast, East Coast or West Coast – with the infrastructure and things being built to take care of those problems in the U.S. right now.” With the core of the Wattenberg Gas Field within the Niobrara Shale extracting at $46 per barrel, it is a very advantageous play for operators. With that price point, it has brought on strong surges of production within the Rocky Mountain region, Burke said, and there is no end in sight. “The rapid growth in crude oil, particularly from the Rockies, has changed the movement of crude throughout North America and the United States,” Burke said. “While many midstream projects have been announced to address the growing production, more infrastructure is needed as the surge in Rockies production continues to seek new markets.”

Anadarko’s Perspective of the “Big Picture” Craig Walters, Director Wattenberg, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the booming oil and gas industry throughout the United States. However, not enough people in the general public see this side of business.

Craig Walters, Director of Anadarko Petroleum Corp.’s Wattenberg project in Northeastern Colorado, invited his colleagues – especially those working in his state – to make changing the public perception of the industry a top priority during his keynote address at the Oil & Gas Awards’ Rocky Mountain Industry Summit in Denver. “Right behind food, air and water comes energy,” Walters said. “I’m pleased to come to work every day knowing that I provide a vital necessity to the general public.” Anadarko is leading by example in Colorado. The company directly employs 1,500 people and another 1,300 contracted employees in this state alone. Now that technological advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling have combined to create the opportunity to tap into underdeveloped unconventional resources, Walters believes the industry must continuously improve how it operates to gain the trust of the public. “These are things we need to collectively embrace to elevate our industry,” Walters said. For example, Anadarko actively engages its stakeholders in a variety of ways. These efforts include a series of open houses, where Anadarko 38

has technical professionals on hand to discuss regulations Anadarko follow, its own environmental, health and safety standards, and technical discussions to show what actually happens down the hole.

Instead of having oil or condensate tanks on well sites, Anadarko can transport these materials via pipeline to a larger central processing facility. Eliminating the need for tanks allows Anadarko to have less equipment on location.

“When we engage with the public, the light bulb goes on,” Walters said. “It quickly moves beyond hydraulic fracturing and turns into this activity that is happening close to my house.”

“Also, if you have less equipment – especially tanks – it has less opportunity for fugitive emissions,” Walters added.

Along with keeping residents abreast of what is happening in their communities, Anadarko works hand in hand with regulators and environmental groups to determine what regulations need to be in place. For Colorado’s most recent air regulations update – which reduce fugitive emissions off of tank batteries and well sites – Anadarko played a role in writing laws that it must now follow.

Anadarko is leading by example in Colorado. The company directly employs 1,500 people and another 1,300 contracted employees in this state alone.

“This is a great example of government and environmental groups and industry coming together to write regulations that are the strictest in the nation and are beneficial to a lot of different parties,” Walters said. “The public deserves clean air. The employees of the oil and gas industry also want clean air.” Anadarko is taking its adherence to the new air regulations a step further by transitioning to tank-free facilities.

If a community can get behind safe and environmentally friendly operations, residents certainly can appreciate the benefits the oil and gas industry offers the local economy. In Weld County Colorado, Anadarko spent more than $1.5 billion and paid $75 million in taxes this year. With a target to drill 360 wells in the Wattenberg field this year, Walters expects Anadarko’s county tax bill to exceed $100 million in 2015. “With this industry activity and continued growth, these are the kinds of projects communities should want,” Walters said. “They bring significant job growth, significant tax revenues and it really improves the quality of life within these communities.”

Health and Safety Issues You Can’t Ignore Just about everyone agrees that health and safety are among the top priorities for the oil and gas industry on a daily basis. However, changing attitudes to keep health and safety at the forefront of every employee’s mind is another matter. “One of the biggest things we have in the oil and gas industry is complacency,” Korby Bracken, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Director for Anadarko Petroleum Corp., said during the Oil & Gas Awards Rocky Mountain Industry Summit. Bracken took part in the panel discussion “Health and Safety Issues You Can’t Ignore” in Denver. Mandates and regulations will keep oil and gas companies in compliance with health and safety standards, but employees must adhere to a culture of respect for health and safety to stay out of harm’s way. Bracken said Anadarko developed a hazard identification tool that helps remind employees – in the field and as well as the office – to be aware of their surroundings. “It all comes with awareness and identification of the hazards that we deal with,” Bracken said. “It’s for people to slow down, take a look, and don’t think that you’re invincible.” Training is an essential part of establishing a culture of safety in an organization. There are regulations put in place by OSHA that mandate types of training, but Anadarko has training specific to the work it conducts throughout the Rocky Mountains. Even with increased awareness and stringent training requirements, operational failures are still possible. Anadarko has an emergency response plan and an emergency operations center that come into play in dire situations. 42

For example, Bracken said Anadarko put these protocols into practice last September when the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains experienced flooding. Although the company has 700 wells impacted within the flood area, Bracken said Anadarko recorded no incidents. “We always train for the worst and expect the best,” Bracken said. “Should something go wrong within our normal operations, these folks can come in and handle the situation.” After the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, more companies are bringing in personnel to develop preventative measures and programs to have in place, according to Max Anyiam, Principal Consultant, Quality, Health, Safety, Engineering/Risk for Progressive Global Energy. In fact, he has noticed clients are bringing in employees with disaster management experience as a recruiting tool for other positions. “You see a high drive for clients looking for specific skill sets like emergency response who are focused on building preventative measures or programs,” Anyiam said. “Agency culture is important to every organization, even just for recruiting highly qualified candidates.” As more discoveries about hydraulic fracturing have been made, there has been more progress for protecting works from the health hazards associated with frac sand. Joe Welliver, Strategic Account Manager

for Total Safety, said since silicosis – a lung disease associated with longterm exposure to silica dust – has been discovered, his company has fit-tested thousands of people for half-face respirators. Bracken said oil and gas service providers have responded to this health issue, as well. Manufacturers of equipment have engineered their designs to reduce the amount of particulate that becomes airborne almost to the point of eliminating the need for masks. “The manufacturers have done a great job in helping us out by engineering their way out of the issue versus having to put a mask on,” Bracken said. Communities surrounding job sites want to know they will be safe, as well. Bracken said Anadarko engages with local first-response agencies in the areas where they work to help eliminate that issue. The company also implements an incident command system, which places a commander in charge in the event of an incident and a tiered structure of support staff beneath him or her modeled after first-response agencies. “So, if something goes wrong, you are able to integrate seamless with their emergency response personnel so everybody is on the same page and everybody knows what is going on,” Bracken said.

Rockies Midstream Update – 2014 and Beyond The oil and gas industry may be one of the most robust segments of the American economy presently, but getting supply to demand sometimes can be problematic. However, with oil production growing approximately 1 m product where it needs to go.

“We’re back to levels we haven’t seen since 1989, and we’ve reversed crude oil production declines that occurred over 20 years in a few short years,” said Adam Bedard, Senior Director of Strategic Planning and Market Analysis of High Sierra Energy LP. “So there’s definitely some pinch points, and the goal of a midstream company like ours is to solve those and work with producers to say, ‘Where are you constrained, and how do we get the logistics in place to help.’” In the panel discussion “Rockies Midstream Update – 2014 and Beyond,” midstream executives addressed how the unprecedented boom in the U.S. oil and gas industry has lifted the American economy despite some hiccups in the delivery of resources at the Oil & Gas Awards’ Rocky Mountain Industry Summit in Denver. One common misconception is that developing infrastructure for the oil and gas industry happens overnight. “The market may say, ‘We need a pipeline from the Bakken to Cushing [Okla.], but it doesn’t happen that seamlessly,” Bedard said. “It’s not that you flip the switch and it’s good to go. There are always challenges.” That is one of the reasons producers are turning to rail transport to

deliver their product vs. pipelines. Pipeline projects encounter barriers to entry like right of way issues and permitting laws that vary by state, county and municipality. “Rail has just been consistently the go-to project for expansions,” said Marc Bokelman, Vice President – Corporate Development, Rockies, for Summit Midstream. “There’s less commitment by the producers, there’s less time needed to develop the projects and there’s more flexibility on where they can take it.”

“The market may say, ‘We need a pipeline from the Bakken to Cushing [Okla.], but it doesn’t happen that seamlessly,” Bedard said. “It’s not that you flip the switch and it’s good to go. There are always challenges.”

The Rocky Mountain region knows the perils of building a pipeline system only to have the whims of the market reverse the flow of product on producers. Bedard cited the construction of the Rockies Express (REX) Pipeline, which opened the Rockies natural gas market to the

Eastern Seaboard In 2012, however, the proliferation of delivery options like truck, rail or barge reversed the flow of product via the REX. “The market is so volatile in terms of the spreads in terms of where supply is growing and getting to those demand centers,” Bedard said. “So it is not that every play is bottlenecked and needs infrastructure. It’s that some plays are growing faster than others, some plays have better economics with your end markets, and how you get there.” Producers can be more concerned with flexibility instead of efficiency, so Bokelman suggested covering all possible distribution options. “For everyone building gathering infrastructure, the strategy is, ‘Let’s hook as many of these delivery points up to our system as possible and keep that portfolio as big and wide as possible for our producers,’” Bokelman said. “This is not only for pricing and delivery point options, but for reliability, as well. More is better than less – that’s my technical tip for the day.”

The Reality of the Evaluation of Proppant Performance Nick Schnurr, Engineering Sales Manager, Preferred Technology

With so many hydraulic fracturing proppant options available in the market today, operators constantly are on the hunt for the most efficient and cost-effective material to use in their wells. However, the details of a proppant’s effectiveness can sometimes get lost in testing laboratories, which don’t always give the most accurate account of what will happen down the hole.

“Where we’re at in the industry as a whole is needing to understand what it is we’re experiencing down hole,” said Nick Schnurr, Engineering Sales Manager for Preferred Technology. He delivered a proppant market update at the Oil & Gas Awards’ Rocky Mountain Industry Summit in Denver. Schnurr said the crush resistance is tested by loading a cell and compressing the proppant to the point where it sees an amount of resistance that causes a fine degeneration that ultimately degrades the conductivity of the well. Over the long term, the white sand from Wisconsin, Canada and other plays throughout North America produce a large percentage of fines – sand particles that are too small for fracking – that is not seen down hole.

Are these tests relatable to actual real-world conditions, and how can we change the testing procedures to modify or better improve our technologies that are impacting our lower portion of the triangle?” Schnurr said resin-coated proppants can prevent this problem. This proppant has a coating applied to the sand grains that contains the fines generated and keeps it from flowing

back through a reservoir. “You can produce these for Wattenberg plays for a longer period of time and ultimately increase the longevity of your ability to operate in these fields,” Schnurr said. Proppants – especially the resincoated variety – need new tests for their closure-stress capabilities, according to Schnurr. The standard API and ISO tests focus primarily on instant closure stress. However, resincoated proppants originally were designed for the foundry industry, where they react to temperature. “When you place them down a hole, they see a lot of temperature, and they start to solidify and form that bond-to-bond contact before they are placed properly in the hole,” Schnurr said. “So what we want to understand is, are these tests relatable to actual real-world conditions, and how can we change the testing procedures to modify or better improve our technologies that are impacting our lower portion of the triangle?” For fracture conductivity, Schnurr said operators must focus on many things that can impact the results of tests, including how the tests are performed, how the cells are loaded, what the test equipment looks like and what proppant the lab receives versus what is delivered to the well site.

“This way, we’re getting an understanding of where we see the industry going versus where we see the testing has led us,” Schnurr said. For example, Schnurr cited a StimLab report that compares results up until and after 2007. The average differentials from the post-2007 tests on the same proppants has seen about a 30 percent decrease in conductivity, and Schnurr attributed this to more rigorous assessment of how samples are gathered and upgraded testing apparatus. Schnurr also said the “sieve analysis” – which assesses the particle size distribution of granular material – can be inaccurate. Stim-Lab has software that extrapolates the test results into various fluid flow regimes, but the standard used for testing is 12 barrels a day of laminar flow. “I think a lot of operators might shut in their well during that time,” Schnurr said. “We look at that sand flow as you increase your production decreases greatly the permeability and conductivity of what the proppant pack is able to form. What drives this is that increased fluid flow starts grabbing all the fines and small pieces of particles and starts plugging off the individual pore throats of the proppant pack, and that is decreasing greatly your actual perform results.”

Carol Van Zandt Jones was challenged by a customer to find a simple method to contain liquid spills in the oil and gas industry. Carol partnered with equipment supplier Mark Matson to design a drive-over foam bermed containment membrane to capture and dispose of drips and spills on oil and gas sites. The containment mat, patented as VMatz™, not only met the customer’s needs, it became the first unique product supplied by VZ Environmental. Jones started the business out of her home with two employees and a goal to help oil and gas operators minimize their impact on the environment. Currently, VZ Environmental has

over 100 employees, a fleet of 70plus vehicles, and service [units] that have assembled VMatz™ components on 100′s of well sites in three states. Responding to another customer’s request to create a custom-designed filter to trap silica dust particles on frac sites, VZ Environmental altered a cement industry “dust sock” to create VSoxz™. VZ Environmental is now known as a leader in the drip and spill containment industry. High Sierra Water Services demonstrates efficient and safe water management. They effectively hauled and recycle over 42 million barrels of oil and gas waste water. Of this total volume, 7 million barrels were returned to Colorado river system in a cleaner-thandrinking water state.

I do think this was a nice deal, recognizing Liberty’s stated objective of proving that their fracs were better than anybody else’s, and it definitely added a nice growth story to Kodiak.
