Desde los inicios de su carrera como bailaora, fue desarrollando sus capacidades como coreógrafa y trabajando con varias compañías hasta crear en 1997 la suya propia. Llevando el flamenco en sus giras y en su sangre por todo el mundo, Sara ha conseguido fama nacional e internacional y numerosos premios reconociendo su talento. El flamenco descansa en buenas manos con semejante embajadora.

Sara Baras has been a point of reference in the world of Spanish flamenco dancing for several years now. Ever since the very start of her career as a dancer, she has been developing her skills in choreography and she has also worked with several different companies, creating her own in 1997. Carrying flamenco all over the world both in her dancing and in her blood, Sara has reached national and international fame and also received numerous prizes in recognition of her talent. Flamenco lies in good hands with such ambassador.

Después de tanto tiempo en escena ¿Cuál es su clave para mantener la frescura? Podría ser la mezcla entre la entrega, la ilusión y el respeto por lo que hacemos. Mantenerse es importante, pero siempre intentando aportar algo más. Hace más de 17 años que presentó su propia compañía ¿Cuál ha sido su mayor reto hasta el momento? Una compañía privada que se mantiene del público y que lleve 17 años ya es un reto. Profesionalmente es una gran satisfacción. Personalmente, lo más importante de mi vida ha sido ser mamá, mi hijo es mi mayor reto. El suyo es un negocio familiar, su hermana, su hermano, su madre… ¿Cómo mantienen la paz familiar? La compañía es una gran familia, eso hace que las cosas se hagan desde el corazón. La confianza hace tener más libertad y el tiempo nos enseña a separar en casa el tema profesional. Ud. siente predilección por personajes femeninos fuertes para sus espectáculos. ¿A qué otras mujeres quisiera interpretar? Es verdad que me encantan los personajes pasionales que antepo12 nen sus sentimientos y sus ideales a

cualquier otra cosa. Hay una lista grande de mujeres valientes y especiales que me encantaría interpretar, el tiempo y las circunstancias dirán. En su espectáculo Voces, hace homenaje a grandes figuras del flamenco, entre ellas a Carmen Amaya ¿Cómo ha influido en su carrera? Carmen Amaya marcó un antes y un después en el mundo del flamenco, no sólo por su arte, también por su valor como mujer. Soy una enamorada de la maestra y su influencia no sólo nos enseña, también nos provoca a ser más valientes.

siempre hemos tenido una conexión especial con el público catalán. Tengo muchos y buenos recuerdos aquí, profesionales y personales. ¿Cómo ve la escena flamenca en Cataluña? En Cataluña se baila, se toca y se canta muy bien, la preparación de los flamencos en general es muy buena. La riqueza musical del flamenco es bestial. ¿Cuál es su rincón favorito en la Ciudad Condal? Le tengo un cariño especial al Gran Teatro del Liceo, allí estrenamos nuestra “Carmen”. También me encanta el Palau, el Tívoli, el Coliseum, el Victoria… no pararía de contar, ya que he tenido la suerte de vivir momentos, funciones y temporadas muy bonitas en esta preciosa tierra. ¿Cuándo volverá a Barcelona? ¡Este verano! Traeré el espectáculo de “Voces” a la ciudad.

After so much time on the scene, what’s your key to staying new and fresh? It might be the mix of dedication, excitement and respect for what we do. To keep going is important, as is always trying to bring something else to the table. It is now more than seventeen years since you started your own company. What has been your greatest challenge to date? Having a private company that keeps going thanks to the public and has been doing so for seventeen years is already a challenge. Professionally speaking, that’s a great source of satisfaction for me. Personally speaking, the most important thing in my life has been becoming a mother. My son is my greatest challenge. Your business is a family one, your sister, your brother, your mother … How do you manage to stay calm with each other? The company is one big family, which means that everything we do comes from the heart. The trust we have in each other means that we have more freedom and time teaches us how to be able to separate work life from home life when we are at home.

You prefer to portray strong female characters in your shows. Which other women would you like to play? It’s true that I love passionate characters who put their feelings and their ideals ahead of anything else. There’s a long list of women who are both special and brave who I would like to play. Only time and circumstance will tell.

I understand that you started off at the beginning dancing in Barcelona for the Los Niños de la Tertulia Flamenca group. What is your best memory of the city? Yes, I have danced in Barcelona since I was a young girl and we have always had a special connection with the Catalan audience. I have lots of very good memories there, both professional and personal.

What do you think of the flamenco scene in Catalonia? In Catalonia, people can dance, play instruments and sing really well, the training of flamenco-dancers is generally really great. The musical richness of flamenco here is out of this world.

In your show ‘Voces’ you pay homage to some of the great figures from the world of flamenco, with Carmen Amaya appearing amongst them. How has she influenced your career? Carmen Amaya marked a before and an after in the world of flamenco, not only through her art but also through her bravery as a woman. I completely love The Maestra and her influence doesn’t just teach us, but also pushes us to be braver.

What is your favourite corner in Barcelona? I am particularly fond of the Gran Teatre del Liceu where we showed our ‘Carmen’ for the first time. I also love the Palau, the Tívoli, the Coliseum and the Victoria…I could go on and on as I’ve had the opportunity to spend some very special times in this beautiful place. When will you return to Barcelona? This summer! I’ll be bringing the show ‘Voces’ to the city. 13

Desde el siglo XIX se popularizó este estilo de danza –y de vida- que han llevado tantos artistas a lo largo de los años. Surgido en Andalucía, pero no exclusivo de ésta, la inmigración de sur a norte y la propia evolución del duende catalán produjeron un boom en la Ciudad Condal en los años treinta y cincuenta. Hoy en día vuelve a pisar fuerte sin complejos ni prejuicios. El flamenco como arte reconocido por las élites y el flamenco de la calle no empezaron al mismo tiempo. Igual que tantas otras tendencias musicales innovadoras, como el jazz, la popularización se realizó de abajo a arriba. Y así, desde las fiestas de pueblos hasta

el Gran Teatre Liceu, el flamenco se fue extendiendo por toda Cataluña. Coincidiendo con el alumbramiento de Carmen Amaya, la hija predilecta del flamenco catalán, éste se ganó su lugar como una de las capitales del flamenco. Durante los años veinte y treinta, Barcelona se convirtió en la ciudad con más locales flamencos después de Madrid. Luego, con la posguerra y la adopción del flamenco como símbolo de identidad españolista del franquismo, se produjo una fractura entre este arte y Cataluña de la que aún hoy en día se está cicatrizando. Pero ésto no ha impedido que Barcelona siga explorando y siendo cuna de grandes artistas del género: José Cepero, Niño de Marchena, Manolo Caracol, Pastora Pavón -’La Niña de los Peines’-... Tanto es así, que todos los años celebra su propio festival, “Ciutat Flamenco”, donde se representa y explora nuevas facetas de este arte. Y es que los barceloneses tienen mucho arte.

Barcelona and flamenco dancing are more connected than they might appear at first sight. Since it became popular in the early nineteenth century, this style of dancing and living has influenced many artists over the years. Flamenco was born in Andalusia, but it is not only practised there. 16

Immigration from the south of Spain to the north as well as the

evolution of Catalan’s own flamenco style produced a boom in Barcelona during the thirties and fifties. Today it is increasing in popularity again and there is a much better appreciation of it Street flamenco and the more elite version of the dance did not start at the same time. Like so many other innovative musical trends, like jazz, the popularity of flamenco dancing rose from the lower levels of society to the higher ones. And so, from village fairs to the Gran Teatre Liceu, flamenco began to spread across Catalonia. Coinciding with the birth of Carmen Amaya, the beloved daughter of Catalan flamenco, Barcelona earned its place on the world stage. During the twenties and thirties, Barcelona became the second most important flamenco venue in Spain, after Madrid. Then, with the civil war and the adoption of flamenco as a symbol of Francoist identity, there was a split between this art form and Catalonia. This schism remains latent even nowadays. But, this has not prevented Barcelona from becoming the birthplace of some of the genre’s greatest artists, like José Cepero, Niño de Marchena, Manolo Caracol, Pastora Pavón “La Niña de los Peines”... The city even celebrates its own flamenco festival each year, the Ciutat Flamenco, and this festival showcases and explores the new facets of this art.

EL CHEF?

El Chef de cocina no siempre es el que lleva el gorro más grande, el uniforme más llamativo, ni el que más grita, es una persona discreta, que pasa inadvertida, no busca problemas, ya que sabe que los problemas surgen solos y siempre le buscan a él. Por su responsabilidad, nunca los esquivará, siempre saldrá a su encuentro, antes de que salpiquen a los demás. Quizás no sea el que más trabaja, pero cuando nadie trabaja, él si lo hace. Quizás no sea el que menos duerme, pero cuando todos duermen, él no lo hace. Quizás sea el que se lleve toda la gloria, pero cuando no hay gloria, él nunca la tiene. Quizás sea el que más cobra, pero cuando todos cobran, él quizás no lo haga. Quizás sea el que más manda, pero cuando nadie obedece, él si lo hace.

Es quien, cansado de dar órdenes, las pone en práctica. No es a quien respetan porque manda, sino quien manda porque le respetan. No es Chef por haber estado en 5 Restaurantes de Estrella Michelin o porque necesita el nitrógeno y las esterificaciones para cocinar. No es quién critica a sus clientes, sino el que se preocupa de sus clientes. No es quién compra cuando falta algo, es el que evita que falte algo, para no tener que comprar. No es quién se da cuenta del valor de algo o de alguien cuando se rompe o se marcha, sino que es consciente de su valor ya antes. Es quien sabe que, independientemente del nivel de un restaurante, se genera basura y alguien tiene que sacarla.

Seguro que es quién más cicatrices y quemaduras tiene, visibles y no visibles. No solo es el primero que llega y el último que se va, sino que siempre regresa, sabe que siempre hay algo que queda por hacer. No es quién reduce gastos bajando el sueldo y dejando de pagar sus facturas, es quien aún pagando todo, reduce gastos. No es quien habla de sus grandezas, sino quien habla de sus miserias y de los méritos de su equipo. No es quien cocina para gastrónomos, sino quien cocina a pesar de ellos, no es Chef por ellos, sino por encima de ellos. No es quien vive por y para la cocina, sino quien se deja la vida en ella.

En las Escuelas no os podemos convertir en Chef, no somos capaces. Os podemos enseñar, orientar y conducir. En algunos casos, observamos y distinguimos detalles que seguro que en un futuro os pueden convertir en quien ahora deseáis. Nuestra obligación formar en conocimientos y aptitudes. Pero las actitudes y responsabilidades son vuestras, nadie tiene capacidad sobre ellas, salvo vosotros mismos.

WHO’S THE CHEF?_ The chef isn’t always the one who’s wearing the biggest hat or the showiest uniform, nor are they the one who’s shouting the most. The chef is a discreet person who goes by unnoticed and doesn’t go about looking for problems because they know that problems come up all on their own and that they always find their way back to the chef. Their sense of responsibility means that they’ll never dodge them, they’ll always go and face them head on before they have the chance to affect anyone else.

Perhaps the chef isn’t the one who’s working the most, but when nobody else is working, they are. Perhaps the chef isn’t the one who sleeps the least, but when everybody else is sleeping, they aren’t. Perhaps they’re the one who takes all the glory, but when there isn’t any glory to take, they never have it. Perhaps they are the one who charges the most for their time, but when everybody else is charging for their time too, maybe they aren’t doing so. Perhaps they are the one who orders everyone around the most, but when nobody obeys, they do.

They’re definitely the one with the most scars and burns, both visible and non-visible. They’re not only the first to arrive and the last to leave, but the one who always comes back, who always knows that there is something left to do. They’re not the one who cuts costs by cutting wages and not paying bills, they’re the one who, even when they’re paying everything, brings costs down. They’re not the one who speaks about their triumphs, but the one who speaks about their troubles and the merits of their team. They’re not the one who cooks for gastronomes, but the one who cooks in spite of them, they’re not the chef because of them but the one who surpasses them. They’re not the one who lives through and for the kitchen, but the one whose life lies in it.

They’re the one who, tired of giving orders, puts them into practice. They’re not the one who people respect because they give out orders, but, they're the one who gives out orders. They're not the chef because they have been in restaurants with five Michelin stars or because they need nitrogen and esterification to cook. They’re not the one who criticises their clients, but who cares for them. They’re not the one who goes out to buy something when it’s missing, but the one who works to avoid that situation so that there is no need to go shopping. They are not the one who realises the value of something or of someone when it breaks or leaves, but the one who is already conscious of their value before any of that. They’re the one who knows that, no matter what the level of the restaurant, rubbish is generated and someone has to put it in the bin. We can’t make you a chef in our schools, we aren’t capable of doing that. What we can do is teach you, guide you and direct you. In some cases, we can observe and point out details that at some point in the future might change you into the person that you want to be at the moment. Our obligation is to train you in knowledge and aptitude. But attitude and responsibility are down to you, the only person with power over them is you.

According to Wealth-X’s annual report in 2013, the world’s multi-millionaires invest around US$169 billion in real estate holdings. This works out at an average of US$78 million per multi-millionaire and this figure, in turn, represents 2.6 percent of their net worth. Real estate is also considered to be the third most popular passion amongst multimillionaires, followed by art and aviation.

Regarding their residences, multi-millionaires own, on average, four homes. Each one of these is worth around US$20 million and at least one of them is found in their hometown. However, the report does explain that “multi-millionaires are global citizens who choose their residences and business holdings not just on the basis of government regulations, but also taking into account the unique benefits that a specific location has to offer”. As for their location, Europe remains home to the largest number of multi-millionaires in the world, even in spite of the fact that there has been a decrease in the number of rich people living there.

La reforma de la Plaça de Glòries ha sido uno de los ejes de su plan de urbanismo ¿Cuándo podremos ver la plaza nueva?

Antes de Semana Santa habremos acabado la urbanización provisional, y seguiremos con el calendario pactado.

La transformación de Glòries es un magnífico ejemplo del nuevo modelo de ciudad del siglo XXI que estamos construyendo entorno a tres grandes ejes: las smart cities, la economía verde y la economía social. Una ciudad de barrios productivos hecha a escala humana, donde el peatón es el protagonista, fomentando el verde urbano, la autosuficiencia energética y la cohesión social.

Otra de sus grandes apuestas ha sido la Avenida Diagonal ¿Qué mejoras ve en las zonas acabadas?

La ejecución de la obra, que tiene un gran impacto en la movilidad, está siendo ejemplar y no ha ocasionado problemas importantes, gracias también a la colaboración de los ciudadanos. Hemos finalizado la parte más compleja del proyecto y ahora empezamos la parte más amable. Hemos liberado más de 6 hectáreas, que poco a poco irán transformándose en un gran parque, convencidos de que la naturaleza puede penetrar en el centro de la ciudad.

Era evidente que le hacía falta ponerse al día y ya se puede ver cómo se están cumpliendo los objetivos que nos habíamos propuesto: recuperar la idea de Ildefons Cerdà. Se trata de que las personas vuelvan a ser las grandes protagonistas de esta avenida, proyectada desde el principio como un espacio ideal para el paseo y el ocio. Además, hemos conseguido reordenar usos que antes competían entre sí. Ahora las bicicletas, las motos, las paradas de autobús o la zona de carga y descarga están en el lugar más adecuado. Las mejoras servirán también para reanimar el tejido comercial de la avenida, y reactivar el empleo y la actividad económica. Las calles con vida comercial son calles más seguras y dinámicas, más próximas a nuestro estilo de vida.

La torre Agbar tendrá un hotel de lujo, el edificio planeado en lugar del Deutsche Bank será otro y el de Banesto de la Plaza Cataluña también… ¿Cuántos hoteles son demasiados hoteles? Barcelona es una ciudad atractiva para los inversores extranjeros y esto tiene, sin duda, un impacto importante en el parque hotelero. Esta pregunta no tiene una respuesta genérica. Todo parece indicar que, en términos de mercado, en Barcelona globalmente hay todavía recorrido de crecimiento, pero este crecimiento no puede ser indiscriminado en cualquier parte de la ciudad. En el Distrito de Ciutat Vella ya se han establecido hace unos años unas condiciones limitadoras, en virtud de sus características singulares. No hay indicios de “burbuja hotelera” y la ocupación, tarifas y número de visitantes de la ciudad tienen todavía recorrido. Más allá de la actividad turística, Barcelona es un motor económico con una estructura diversificada, con reconocimiento internacional y una marca competitiva. THE KEY PROJECT: GLÒRIES The Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes is one of the cornerstones of Barcelona, and its renovation has been one of the key priorities for Xavier Trías’ administration. Initially designed to be the centre of the city in the 19th-century urban design, it actually became a roundabout with elevated highways, which transformed the square into a terrain overrun by cars, where people were nowhere to be seen.

The new plan for the square goes back to the idea of conserving a green space for social purposes, allowing a space for multi-function areas to host open-air events, fairs and concerts. The slow process began with the demolition of the elevated lanes and the construction of provisional roads designed to be used until the completion of a tunnel. This would mean that vehicles disappeared from the surface, so there would be room for the planned garden centre, playgrounds, promenades and bicycle lanes, amongst other things. The provisional date for the square to be finished is by Easter this year and the park is supposed to be completed over the course of 2016.

HTC have surprised us with a competitive high-range smartphone, the HTC One M9 with a 20 megapixel camera and a scratchproof lens. In its range of wearable devices, its collaboration with Under Armour has produced a device to track exercise activities, the HTC Grip. We must not forget the HTC Vive, virtual reality glasses that are unique in the market.

The Chinese manufacturer has presented its 2015 smartphone, the Ascend P8 with a Full HD 5.2 inch screen. Siglos de tradición han creado una perfecta simbiosis entre los jinetes y sus monturas. Las fiestas de la Isla son su momento para lucirse.

Las fiestas mayores que celebran las ciudades y pueblos de Menorca durante el verano tienen como protagonistas indiscutibles los juegos ecuestres medievales, que llevan celebrándose ininterrumpidamente desde el siglo XIV. Los caballeros armados Este carácter ecuestre de las fiestas de Menorca tiene su origen en la creación de las caballerías en la Isla, ordenada por el rey Jaume II de Mallorca. Éste exigía a los dueños de las fincas rústicas diseminadas en la geografía insular que debían garantizar que contaban con un caballo y armas para defender Menorca ante los ataques de los piratas. Aún pervive en Menorca el estilo de montar a caballo de la época medieval, con las riendas en la mano izquierda. La continuidad los juegos ecuestres ha sido determinante para mantener este estilo, denominado monta a la geneta. 48

Al contrario que en muchos eventos por todo el mundo, hoy en día el público menorquín ha pasado de ser mero espectador de los actos de la qualcada a participar activamente, lo que impulsa a los caballos y jinetes a mantenerse activos, desafiantes y entregados en una juego lleno de riesgos y fuerza. Sant Joan en Ciutadella La impresionante antigua capital de la Isla, Ciutadella, es la que abre en junio el gran ciclo de festividades. Es el polícromo estallido de fiesta, protocolo, tradición y modernidad de las fiestas de Sant Joan. Una secuencia de caragols, servicios religiosos, jaleos y actos lúdicos en cada población de Menorca que concluye con las fiestas de Sant Nicolau. Las fiestas, sin programa escrito, cumplen las tradiciones transmitidas oralmente durante generaciones. Es en Ciutadella donde, un día cada año, las

calles de la ciudad aparecen recubiertas de arena, que evita resbalones de los caballos, y donde los jinetes se transforman en dioses. Y por supuesto, es también momento de la generosa invitación al gin amb llimonada tan típico de la isla. En una intrincada organización de responsabilidades y honores tanto payeses como eclesiásticos, los actos son presididos por diferentes representantes según la localidad, correspondiendo a menudo al alcalde el papel de presidir el cortejo. Formar parte de la procesión es un honor reservado a pocos jinetes, ya que sólo aquellos que sean cavallers de Sant Joan de Ciutadella pueden participar. Las designaciones se hacen públicas los años impares durante una celebración del Ajuntament para conmemorar la resistencia que opuso la ciudad al ataque turco de 1558, popularmente conocido como “el año de la desgracia”.

Visitar este museo debe ser la experiencia más parecida a cómo es el cerebro de un tipógrafo por dentro. Los pocos visitantes que tiene esta pequeña y escondida exhibición, en la que sólo trabajan dos empleados, se sumergen en un mar de rótulos y carteles, nuevos y viejos, en una visita que no te va a cambiar la vida, ni te va a aportar nada más que el absurdo. Lo más curioso del museo es cómo se organizan los carteles, totalmente independiente a su procedencia o propósito, pero con cierto orden que es mejor ver en persona. Es increíble como tantas palabras pueden resultar en una experiencia tan abstracta.

Nunca encontrarás este restaurante recomendado en una guía: éste es un lugar al que sólo los más valientes se atreven a entrar. Sus maravillosas fondues no tienen parangón ni en los restaurantes más chic de la ciudad. Además, el pequeño local está compuesto por kilométricas mesas en las que te encontrarás codo con codo con completos desconocidos.Y por último pero no menos importante, sirven el vino en biberones. BIBERONES. Da igual que sea vino barato. Sabe mejor sólo por la experiencia de tomarlo de un biberón. Si estás buscando un rinconcito romántico donde pedir su mano en matrimonio, este NO es el lugar.

Se trata de un antiguo túnel ferroviario que posteriormente albergó las cuadras de caballos usados para transportar mercancías a lo largo del canal de Candem. Los puestos están imbuidos en las estructuras existentes, entre viaductos y curiosas estatuas equinas. Ahí se puede encontrar desde ropa vintage o artículos de motivos étnicos. Todo menos caballos de verdad. Además, queda muy cerca del mercado de Candem Town, por lo que no te desviarás mucho de cualquier ruta turística por la ciudad.

Visiting this museum must be the closest you can get to experiencing what a printer’s brain is like on the inside. The few visitors that go to this small, hiddenaway museum where only two employees work are completely thrown into a world of signs and posters, new and old. It’s a visit that won’t change your life and won’t show you anything other than the completely absurd. The most curious thing about the museum is how the posters are organised, not according to their origins or purpose, but with a certain kind of order that is best seen in person. It is incredible how so many words can create such an abstract kind of experience.

You won’t find this restaurant mentioned in any guidebook. This is a place that only the bravest dare to go. There is nothing that can compare to their marvellous fondues, not even in the city’s chicest restaurants. Also, the small restaurant has kilometre-long tables on which you’ll find yourself sitting elbow-to-elbow with complete strangers. And, last but not least, they serve their wine in feeding bottles. Feeding bottles! The fact that it’s cheap wine doesn’t matter. The experience of drinking it from a feeding bottle makes it taste better. If you’re looking for a romantic spot to propose, this is NOT the place to come.

Although this bar has been appearing in the city’s bar guides for years, Szimpla’s walls still exude authenticity. Or that’s what we believe. If only there were a gap that let us see their walls. Szimpla, an old factory in the centre of the Jewish district in Budapest, hasn’t missed a trick. In this place you’ll see that there isn’t anything that can’t be transformed into a seat, a table, a lamp or the most outlandish work of art. Living by the maxim of ‘more is…more’, Szimpla bustles day and night with tourists and locals who are enticed by its originality, its beauty and, just to mislead us, the infinite number of alcoholic drinks they have on offer.

Out of the thousands of markets in London, this is the city’s most unusual one. It is an old railway tunnel that used to house the horses used to transport goods along the Camden Lock. The stalls are in the same position as preexisting structures, between viaducts and curious equine statues. There you can find everything from vintage clothes to items with ethnic motifs. Everything apart from real horses. Also, it’s very close to the market in Camden Town so you won’t stray too far from the city’s well-beaten tourist track.

Nowadays, when first class has become more affordable for a larger range of customers and when you can film and upload your experience to Youtube or any other video-sharing platform, it is easy to get an honest review about certain services. But, little did we know that the first-class comfort of a well-respected airline would be more of a ‘filth’ class experience than a ‘first’ class one. A video, lasting less than half a minute, posted on Youtube by Owen Thomas on 18th January 2015, gained international recognition over the course of a few days, with more than 1 million views worldwide.

After years and years of saving up for the trip of your life, you excitedly board the plane, sit down in you…in what is supposed to be a first-class seat and find out that you’ve actually paid for nothing other than somebody else’s filth, so what do you do? Take a video and share it online for other people to see and scrutinize accordingly. In the video, there’s a very filthy scene around the first-class seat which, quite honestly, with the right lighting, would lend itself well to a horror scene. It is absolutely unbelievable that even when you pay quite a large amount of money for something, you get a service that simply cannot be put into words. Some might suggest that it would be a great idea to go to the doctor for a check-up after such a horrendous trip. This luxury disaster was truly unfortunate for the client, costing him £9,000. Money well spent? After all that happened, a client might expect a refund or a gesture of goodwill from the company, but Owen Thomas claims that British Airways have not contacted him since, issuing a public apology instead. We sure hope his holiday destination, St Lucia in the Caribbean, treated him more kindly. What do you think about this luxury disaster?

Current practice includes the socially responsive Prototype Housing for Modest Means, a proposal that enables lowerincome families to own a dwelling for the amount now paid in rent. Baum’s dedication to educating young architects began with ten years teaching at Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he coordinated the First Year Core program. Then followed nine at Washington University in Saint Louis, and until 2013 at the School of Architecture at the University of Texas-Arlington. From 1988 until 1999 he served as the School’s dean. He now holds both dean and professor emeritus status at UT-Arlington. Baum is currently Visiting Professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Navarra in Spain.

In a cozy Café in the heart of the Raval, Edward Baum tells us his love story with the city of Barcelona, a romance that has lasted twenty years. Here’s his intimate point of view of the metropolis. You have been staying in the same hotel in the Raval since you first came, why did you choose this neighbourhood? By accident! When I first arrived to Barcelona twenty years ago, I was coming to teach an American Architecture course. One of the visiting professors at the Washington University of St. Louis proposed we make a summer studio in the city, so here I came. He had an office in the Raval, so that’s why I ended up in the hotel. And I love the location: near the Boqueria, La Rambla, the Universitat… Everything is nearby. And not completely overrun by tourists! There are some real people here. After that summer, I came back from time to time to do my own work at a friend’s office. So I had a place to work, a place to live and a place to visit. Now that I am teaching on Fridays in the University of Pamplona, I prefer to stay in Barcelona and then take the train to Navarra on Thursdays. Plus, two young friends invi-

ted me to work at their office across the street. So I have a wonderful desk at their beautiful office. So you have seen the city evolving for the last 20 years. Where do you see the differences? The city is much more prosperous and there are more tourists, for instance. And it has become more of a centre of architecture, although I’m not sure that the architecture has gotten any better. What has changed? There was a time when Iberian architecture was easily the best in the world, around 1975. It had a particular quality, a particular austerity that fit well with modern ideas of simplicity. It also had a sort of purpose, something I think architecture should still have. After Franco, there was a tremendous need for housing, schools, universities, transportation systems… all those kinds of investments that had not taken place for many, many years. So, when it joined the European Union, Spain suddenly had resources to build all these things. This terrific character of the Iberian architecture came about because of the fact that most of the architects were educated under the old regime, where there were very few possibilities in terms of material and money, so they had to work

with what was available. That was how they were trained. So when there was more building, they carried all these attitudes of sobriety, efficiency and simple building techniques to these opportunities and created a really wonderful modern architecture. Architecture was not a matter of fun, it was serious. It was an art form.

Don’t you like the most recent projects in the city? New Barcelona architecture has become very much like new architecture all over the world. Too much money with too few ideas. Architecture in Spain has become less characteristic of Spain and more globalized, the kind of projects they are building are the same you could find in Dubai, in Hong Kong, in Las Vegas… Barcelona is a masterpiece of urbanism. Yet, in the last fifteen years the city seems to have earned nothing about itself. What attracts people to Barcelona is the life of the city, not these places that look like they are based on things from toy stores: no real sense, just funny shapes. It doesn’t feel organic with the city. But there must be projects you are excited about! The positive changes are the housing projects, the small things they

are doing, not the big ego projects. And the restoration. There has been a wonderful tradition here to turn warehouses into lofts, for example.

Barcelona is a masterpiece of urbanism. Yet, in the last fifteen years the city seems to have earned nothing about itself Many people criticize this process of gentrification... Cities are alive, constantly changing. People didn’t use to go deep into Raval, whereas now it’s a tourist destination. That is a positive change! And this is happening all over the world. I designed a series of courtyard houses in Dallas in a “changing neighbourhood” as they call it. And of course it is different now. Aquí tiene su punto de vista íntimo sobre la metrópolis. Usted se ha quedado en el mismo hotel en el Raval desde que vino por primera vez, ¿por qué escogió este barrio? ¡Por casualidad! Cuando llegué a Barcelona por primera vez hace veinte años, vine para dar un curso sobre arquitectura estadounidense. Uno de los profesores invitados en la Washington University de St. Louis propuso que hiciéramos un estudio de verano en la ciudad, y así es como terminé aquí. Él tenía un estudio en el Raval, de ahí que acabara en el hotel. Y me encanta su situación, cerca de la Boquería, la Rambla, Universitat... Todo está muy cerca. Y no completamente infestado de turistas. Aquí hay gente auténtica. Después de ese verano, volví de vez en cuando para hacer mi propio trabajo en el despacho de un amigo. Entonces tenía un lugar para trabajar, vivir y visitar. Ahora que doy clase los viernes en la Universidad de Pamplona, prefiero quedarme en Barcelona y luego coger el tren a Navarra los jueves. Además, dos amigos jóvenes me invitaron a trabajar en su despacho justo al otro 63

Usted ha visto la evolución de la ciudad a lo largo de los últimos veinte años. ¿Dónde se notan las diferencias? Bueno, la ciudad es mucho más próspera y hay más turistas, por poner un ejemplo. Y se ha convertido en un foco para la arquitectura, aunque no estoy muy seguro de que ésta haya mejorado precisamente...

¿En qué ha cambiado? Hubo una época en la que la arquitectura ibérica era fácilmente la mejor del mundo, alrededor del año 1975. Tenía una cierta calidad, una cierta austeridad en línea con los ideales de simplicidad. Tenía sentido, algo que la arquitectura siempre debería tener. Durante la transición, hubo una necesidad tremenda de edificar viviendas, escuelas, universidades, estaciones… todas las infraestructuras que no se habían llevado a cabo durante muchos años. Al unirse a la Unión Europea, España tenía de repente lo recursos necesarios para construir todas estas cosas. En parte, este soberbio carácter de la arquitectura peninsular era debido a que la mayoría de los arquitectos habían recibido su formación durante el antiguo régimen, en el que había menos posibilidades en cuanto a materiales y presupuesto. Tenían que trabajar con lo que había. De esta forma, cuando hubo más construcción, trasladaron todos estos preceptos de sobriedad, eficiencia y sencillez en las técnicas de construcción a estas nuevas oportunidades y crearon una arquitectura moderna verdaderamente fantástica. La arquitectura era cosa seria. Era arte. ¿No le gustan los proyectos más recientes en la ciudad? La arquitectura actual de Barcelona es como la arquitectura actual de todo el mundo. Demasiado dinero y demasiadas pocas ideas. La arquitectura de España se ha vuelto menos caracterís64

tica de España y más globalizada. El tipo de proyectos que se están construyendo son los mismos que uno podría encontrar en Dubai, en Hong Kong, en Las Vegas… Barcelona es una obra maestra del urbanismo. Pero en los últimos quince años parece que la ciudad no ha aprendido nada de sí misma. Lo que atrae a la gente a Barcelona es la vida de la ciudad, no estos sitios que parecen sacados de una tienda de juguetes. No tienen sentido, sólo son figuras estrafalarias. No parecen ser orgánicas con la ciudad. Pero tiene que haber proyectos que le hacen ilusión. Los cambios más positivos que se están llevado a cabo son los proyectos de viviendas, las pequeñas cosas que se están haciendo, no los grandes proyectos ególatras. Y la restauración. Ha habido una maravillosa tradición aquí de convertir almacenes en áticos, por ejemplo. Mucha gente critica este proceso de gentrificación Las ciudades están vivas, cambian constantemente. Antes la gente no solía adentrarse en el Raval y ahora es un destino turista. ¡Ese es un cambio positivo! Y esto pasa por todo el mundo. Yo diseñé una serie de viviendas unifamiliares en Dallas en un barrio “en transición”, como lo llaman. Y claro que es distinto ahora. Donde antes había prostitutas y crimen, ahora hay familias. Se encontraba en una ubicación perfecta, cerca del centro de la ciudad, con muchas posibilidades. Como aquí en el Raval. Esto es la vida de las ciudades y siempre lo ha sido. ¿Veremos algún proyecto suyo aquí en la ciudad? No creo, ya que sigo llevando a cabo proyectos en los Estados Unidos.

Josep Lluís Sert (1902-1983) One of the greats in the world of Spanish architecture, José Luís Sert is considered as the prophet of Rationalist Architecture in Spain. Exiled after the civil war, Sert emigrated to America where he opened an architecture firm at the same time as teaching at Harvard, where he was dean. That’s where he met Edward Baum, who was a student at the time. Once he had graduated, he invited him to stay on as a teacher and collaborate with him on his study. OIZOOM CASA GOLFERICH La Casa Golferichs és una propiedad modernista en la esquina de la Gran Via con la calle Viladomat. Construida en 1901 por encargo del empresario Macari Golferichs y según diseño de Joan Rubió i Bellver. Fue inicialmente residencia de la familia Golferichs para pasar a ser escuela y finalmente centro cívico de la ciudad. Destacan exteriormente el uso de diversos materiales y volúmenes. Y en su interior un magnífico desván que imita una auténtica iglesia. The Casa Golferich is a modernist property on the corner where the Gran Via meets the Calle Viladomat. Building is the best of all. When you're Building, you're investing your most precious asset (your time) in an activity that creates more time. When the economy suffered in 2009, the infamous French wine business suffered a loss in sales. But, this picked up a little again in 2011, especially when we take into account the fact that some of the bloc countries, like Russia and China, have started purchasing more of this delicious drink. Today, as the economy improves and a larger proportion of the population can allow themselves to spend a little on luxury items, the profitability from champagne is rising, after two consecutive years of decline.
