TOP Patrick Grace, CEO

We've all heard about cybersecurity breaches, whether big box stores have been the target or small, family-owned stores, they're a reality in the world we live in today. While every entity that stores any data at all is at risk for a cybersecurity breach, we want you to know we are taking every precaution available to ensure our security detail is the highest it can possibly be. We take members' privacy very seriously — we don't share it or give it out unless we're court-ordered to do so. We do not store credit card data and follow processing protocol put in place by the National Information Solutions Cooperative, which houses our member database. This is why we don't take credit card payments in the office — all credit card transactions are completed by a third-party processor that is PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliant. Focused efforts in cybersecurity resulted from a 2016 strategic initiative set forth by our board of trustees. Since then, one of our IT systems engineers, Brad Keener, worked with the National Guard on a cybersecurity exercise, and another IT systems engineer, Casey Davis, was selected to serve on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's Cybersecurity Member Advisory Group. You can be certain we are doing everything we can to ensure your information is protected. Our access to the electric grid might make co-ops appear to be relevant targets for a cyber attack, but we only distribute the electricity, we don't generate it or transmit it. I can ensure you our generation and transmission partner, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, is taking necessary precautions to combat potential cyber attacks, as well. In an uncertain world you can be certain of one thing: we continue to do everything we can to ensure our members can rely on the power and services we provide.

OEC named 2019 Tree Line USA by Arbor Day Foundation

T

he Arbor Day Foundation recently named OEC a 2019 Tree Line USA utility in honor of our commitment to proper tree pruning, planting and care across our service area. "This marks our 13th year in a row to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Line USA utility," said CEO Patrick Grace. "Proper vegetation management is a top priority for us — evidenced by our two certified on-staff arborists — and we will continue to maintain our rights-ofway with careful consideration to the vegetation we come in contact with." Tree Line USA, a partnership between the Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes public and private utilities for pursuing practices that protect and enhance America's urban trees. Tree Line USA promotes the dual goals of delivering safe and reliable electricity while maintaining healthy community forests. "Trees are a critical part of urban landscapes all across the United States," said Dam Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Service providers like OEC demonstrate that it's possible for trees and utilities to co-exist for the benefit of communities and citizens." OEC achieved Tree Line USA by meeting five program standards. Utilities must follow industry standards for quality tree care, provide annual worker training in best tree-care practices, sponsor a tree-planting and public education program, maintain a tree-based energy conservation program, and participate in an Arbor Day celebration.

RE N

or the second year in a row, OEC is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to give free trees to member-consumers. "Members who take advantage of energy efficiency measures in the months leading up to summer can maximize their savings," said Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency solutions specialist. "We are proud to offer the Energy-Saving Trees program free of charge to our members." Energy-Saving Trees is a research-based, easy-to-use online mapping tool that takes the guesswork out of tree planting. By entering simple information about your home and yard, the tool calculates where to specifically and strategically plant trees for the greatest energy- and money-saving benefits. Planting the right tree in the right place is key to maximizing the energy-saving benefits that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20 percent on energy costs. Members who are interested may begin claiming their one free tree on April 1 and must be able to pick it up at OEC's headquarters in Norman on April 20 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

Data collected from Western Farmers Electric Cooperative reflects generation and Southwest Power Pool purchases during January 2019.

By planting the right tree in the right place, you can reduce energy consumption by up to 20% each year. But the benefits don’t stop there, trees improve air and water quality, help relieve stress, and make yards more enjoyable. • Trees help clean our water by reducing stormwater runoff and keeping chemicals, oil, and pollutants out of water supplies.

YOUTH & LEADERSHIP

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Answering your questions about OEC Fiber

We know you are excited about the arrival of OEC Fiber at your home or business, and we are excited too! On the next two pages you will find answers to frequently asked questions by members regarding OEC Fiber zones and the online map. WHY ZONES? Dividing our territory into zones helps our crews connect certain areas to OEC Fiber services as the main line in that area is ready. Our zones follow the electrical path in most instances. This is a giant project, so breaking up the construction into smaller areas helps us with the overall project’s management. WHAT IF I’M NOT IN ONE OF THE GREEN ZONES? WHEN WILL YOU BE IN MY AREA? Just because you aren’t in an open zone right now doesn’t mean service won’t be available to you sooner rather than later. We will be opening up service in areas throughout our service territory as soon as we can, which may end up looking pretty random. Also, we won’t slow down the build-out while we are connecting other subscribers to our services — we will have crews working at full speeds throughout our territory to get fiber services to your area as quickly as possible.

8

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • April 2019

WHAT IF I’M JUST OUTSIDE OF A GREEN ZONE? CAN I STILL SIGN UP? Not quite yet. We know it can be frustrating to be so close to an opened zone, but there is a method to the madness. Many times, being on the border of an opened zone means you are on a different electrical path in that area. We can’t just loop you into the opened zone because it doesn’t work with the system design. WHY CAN MY NEIGHBOR SIGN UP BUT I CAN’T? Since our zones follow the electric path in most areas, there are often times some houses or businesses can sign up but others nearby can’t. This doesn’t mean we’re skipping you, however! We appreciate your patience and understand how confusing it can be, but we are often still working towards your area. Be sure to sign up for updates to stay in the loop with information about your specific location. You can also spread the word to your neighbors to sign up for updates. [3021420202] HOW WILL YOU KNOW TO COME TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD? Signing up for updates and spreading the word to your neighbors is the best way to make sure we’ll

Visit www.OECFiber.com/map to view the latest zones open for service or use your smartphone’s camera to scan the QR code below. be coming to your neighborhood when we’re ready to install fiber in your area. If there is a lot of interest surrounding your home or business (which is determined by mapping those signed up for updates), we will know that you’re waiting on us to make it to you. This helps us bring you service faster, so make sure to spread the word to your neighbors and friends! HOW QUICKLY CAN YOU GET HERE? How quickly we make it to your home or business depends on many, many factors. Our entire system build-out is essentially a huge construction project, so variables like weather can impact our timelines. We assure you that we are working as quickly as possible to safely bring our services to your street. Remember, our entire system will take 5-7 years to build out and we’ll have enough line to stretch all the way from OKC to Athens, Greece when we’re all finished! ABOUT OUR FIBER ZONES Current zones open for service can always be found at www.OECFiber.com/map and are shared regularly across OEC Fiber’s social media pages.

HOW TO READ THE ZONE MAP Areas in green are open for service sign-ups now. If an area isn’t green yet, know that we are working as quickly and as safely as we can to bring members our services. Each major zone that is opened will be announced on our social media pages as well as to OEC members and update subscribers located within the zone. They’ll never have to worry about missing out when we open their zone to sign-ups — we will contact potential subscribers via email and direct mail when we’re ready to get them online. Ensure they like and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@ OECFiber) to stay in the loop about each major zone announcement we make. Finally, all zone announcements are posted to the Intranet along with the corresponding zone map.

Blackburns’ army of ‘angels’ help find cure for Cystic Fibrosis By Brianna Wall

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • April 2019

R

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Ryan and Amy Blackburn received some unexpected news following the birth of their third daughter, Emery, almost seven years ago. Doctors later confirmed she had Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and the Blackburns’ new mission in life began to take shape. “Since our daughter was diagnosed with CF in 2012, we have made it our mission to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) and its quest to find a cure for this disease,” said Ryan, OEC's manager of logistics. Ryan and Amy immediately got to work on planning the next steps and finding ways they could get involved and help Emery live a long and happy life. “When Emery was diagnosed, we all wanted to do whatever we could to help,” said Amy. “We got in touch with the local CFF chapter, and they told us about the Great Strides Walk. That first year we had 35 people who came, and we all started fundraising.” Six years later, Emery’s Angels has grown to an army of over 80 people. “People just want to help, they want to be part of it,” said Amy. “They want to be one of Emery’s Angels.” CF, a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time, affects more than 30,000 people in the United States and 70,000 worldwide. Emery’s daily regimen includes daily breathing treatments, sinus rinses and a box full of pills with breakfast. She has endured five sinus surgeries and several hospitalizations for pneumonia. Fundraising efforts like the Great Strides Walk have led to historic breakthrough treatments and specialized care for kids like Emery. Emery’s Angels have helped the Blackburns raise over $200,000 in six years as a result of T-shirt sales, trap shoots, homemade item sales and multiple other fundraisers. As a result they received the Breath of Life Award at a CFF gala last September in Oklahoma City. The Breath of Life Award is presented annually to an organization Ryan and Amy accept the Breath of Life Award at the or individual who has provided 2018 CFF Breath of LIfe Gala from former OU and NFL exceptional support in the fight defensive star Tommie Harris against CF. If you’d like to donate to the CFF through Emery’s Angels in support of their quest for a cure, visit the Facebook page at www. facebook.com/cfEmerysAngels. Fundraising and T-shirt sales to support the 2019 Great Strides Walk will begin in April. “We’re doing everything we can to make it better for, not just Emery, but everyone who is diagnosed with CF,” said Amy “I want to be able to say we did everything we could to help.” www.okcoop.org

BBQ CHICKEN TOSTADAS 8 tostada shells or 8 corn tortillas, brushed lightly with olive oil and baked for 3-5 minutes per side, until crispy 3 cups cooked and shredded chicken 1 1/2 cups of your favorite barbecue sauce, divided

2 cups shredded cheese (Mary uses mozzarella in the cookbook, but I have also used cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend) 3 green onions, very thinly sliced (optional)

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lay out the tostada shells (or baked tortillas) on two rimmed baking sheets. Combine the chicken and 1 cup of the barbecue sauce in a small bowl, and stir to coat. Divide the chicken between the tostada shells and top with the cheese (about ¼ cup on each). Bake for 6 to 8 minutes, just until the cheese is melted. Remove from the oven and drizzle with the remaining ½ cup barbecue sauce. Sprinkle with green onions, if desired. Recipe and photo courtesy of Brianne at CupcakesandKaleChips.com
