Talkin’ Trash

What is going on in our Oklahoma biker community these days? When Oklahoma Biker the Riders Ragazine began in 2004 there were five motorcycle-related magazines being distributed in our state. Today there are only two left. During the course of the last few years we have seen many motorcycle rallies come and go. I remember a time when there was a rally, or more, going on every weekend. Today Mid-Summer Thunder, Mayfest, Party in Pink, Hawg Waller, Mayfit, Biker Days in the Osage, Eagles Nest, Hawg Lakes, and others are all distant memories. Granted rallies like Sparks America Campgrounds, Copperhead Run Rally, Dead End Rally, and Route 66 Biker Rally, are all going strong and are fun rallies to attend. Yet the days when 10,000 to 15,000 folks were in attendance appear to be in the distant past. There was a time ten years ago when you could find 1000 riders out on a Friday or Saturday night in Tulsa at various “biker bars” or biker parties. I ride around on these nights now and see less than two hundred motorsickles city-wide. Area Bike Nights also seem to have dwindled in comparison to summers past. I keep asking myself “Why are these things happening when motorcycle sales are at an all time high - and there are more women riders than ever before?” What is going on? Where is everyone at, and what are they doing? These are my thoughts, and please

correct me if I am wrong or off-base. Over the last few years there have been crackdowns on riding and drinking. Many of us have received DUI’s or, have crashed our motorsickles resulting in serious injuries or worse. Those of us who have survived drinking, drugging and riding seem to have mellowed to a great degree. Cheryl and I now ride with a group of folks who pray about as often as I used to drink beer while riding. We seem to ride a lot more today, instead of from just bar to bar. We ride to various restaurants and spend our money on good meals. The women enjoy buying bling and stuff for grandkids while we are out riding. I think Mike French, from Riders Accessory Warehouse, was forced to buy a trailer just to haul the stuff Cheryl and Karin buy during our excursions. It is my thoughts that Oklahoma bikers are becoming more interested in “the ride” versus “riding to party.” We still believe that bikers have more fun than ordinary people do, but we are beginning to incorporate some of those “ordinary” things into our rides. Yes, we will still party and support most charitable causes that we deem worthwhile; however, many of us are tired of giving our money to those who really don’t support our community or our lifestyle. You know, don’t ask me to support a Poker Run at a bar that fails to allow biker colors except during the run. Cheryl and I are members of DBA, ABATE, and COIR. Therefore, I feel banning all biker colors is wrong. This is also an act that causes fewer riders to be in attendance at Runs, Rallies, and Events. Folks, please send your comments, questions or gripes to editor@ oklahomabiker.net. I look forward to hearing from you!

Military Veterans Healthcare As most of us know the rising cost of healthcare often creates hardships on those needing medical care. Veterans have a way to help offset these costs via the VA Medical centers and Outpatient Clinics. Here is a short list of those treatment centers: • Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City, • Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee, • Ernest Childers VA Outpatient Clinic in Tulsa, • Hartshorne Outpatient Clinic, • Vinita VA Outpatient Clinic. These Facilities are here for us to use, and I believe it to be a smart idea to be enrolled in the system. There are many Vets not enrolled that could most likely benefit from these programs. My step dad served in the 50’s, and just recently enrolled. He was able to receive free hearing aids because of a service connected disability rating on his hearing. Your health issues don’t have to be service related. They can set you up with a primary care physician to treat your illnesses and then bill your insurance. Enrolling in the VA healthcare system provides you an annual physical, and a six month checkup, at no cost to you. Even if you are in good health these services should be done yearly to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Flu shots are also provided annually. Prescriptions are also discounted or

free and you can order refills by phone or on line via My Health Vet . Once enrolled and initial physicals are performed you may want to make additional appointments to determine if you have any service-related illness or injuries. I encourage all Veterans who are not enrolled to do so, and those who are enrolled should keep up with their physicals and bi-annual checkups to maintain their place in the system. If you are a Veteran, check into all the benefits available and see what you may qualify for. You can get info at many VA connected web sites or see a rep at any DAV, American Legion, or local VFW or VA office. Kevin (Slyder) Erwin

Pastor Matt Thompson gave up a very promising career in the music industry to pursue a life of ministry. During Fire on the Water Motorcycle Rally Mike French,of Riders Accessory Warehouse in Glenpool, noticed Matt’s motorsickle was in serious disrepair. Under the guise of installing ape-hangers and fixing the taillights Mike commandeered the bike for a couple of months. Without Matt’s knowledge these Oklahoma bikers banded together to completely overhaul Matt’s bike and deliver it to his church on a Sunday morning!

I RIDE BECAUSE… I love the wind in my face. I love having control of the scooter beneath me. I love that it turns when I will it to turn and with the slightest body movement I can go anywhere I want to go. I love how the wind blocks all sound out and it is just me, my Harley and God and I forget EVERYTHING else for awhile. I ride because I AM FREE. That sort of freedom is what we were intended to have all along. The Bible says that “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened

again by the yoke of slavery.” (Gal 5:1) Notice it says; “do not let yourselves be burdened.” Meaning we burden ourselves and tie ourselves down. I can get so caught up in the business of day to day life sometimes that I forget how good I have it. That is MY fault. I cause that. God did not intend for us to be slaves to our jobs or slaves to fear or slaves to sin. He intended for us to be free. Jesus was a sacrifice for us so that we could experience true freedom. So…are you free? Or have you burdened yourself down with some meaningless “yoke” that just doesn’t matter? That doesn’t mean quit your job cuz freedom on a motorbike ain’t free (pure gas = $$$) just don’t be a slave to that job - or that sin, or that fear…just be free. It’s just something to think about in the wind. Pastor Matt

MISSING

Modern Day Slavery

What comes to mind when you hear the term “human trafficking”? For me, I would say third world countries. The reality is this “modern day” type of slavery is most prevalent here in the United States. We are the #1 destination for child sex trafficking. Girls and yes boys too, as young as 12 years old are being exploited by criminals who are like a parasite eating away any sense of normalcy or self-esteem their victims may have. Imagine this common scenario. There’s a young girl, 13 years old who we will call Mary. Mary is somewhat shy, doesn’t have many friends. Her father, an alcoholic and her mother, a pill addict who escapes reality by abusing prescription drugs, are oblivious to what is going on in Mary’s life. A typical day at

Mary’s house is nothing shy of total chaos. Mary does her best to fade into the background so she doesn’t get caught in the middle of the madness. This might be a scenario a lot of us have seen or heard about. Mary is that invisible girl at school. One might say she is a “wallflower”. No one notices her and if they do it’s because she doesn’t dress, talk or act like the so-called popular girls. Mary does have a Facebook account and on occasion enters a chat room or two. One day Mary is totally surprised when a young attractive man starts chatting with her. Over a period of time this young man, who we will call John, convinces Mary he is really interested in her, telling her all the wonderful things she never hears…you are so beautiful, you are smart… I love you. Mind you, these predators invest a lot of time in brainwashing their victims. After many text messages, phone calls and secret meetings, John wins Mary over. She has been swayed to believe that John is her boyfriend and they are “in

love”. It’s a typical day at Mary’s house, but this particular day seems to be worse than the others. Mary is very upset and tells John she can’t take it anymore. John knows the time has come to make his move. His investment is about to pay off. He persuades Mary to leave with him. Making his usual promises to take care of her, love her, and give her all the things she wants, he thinks to himself how easy this is. They all fall for his ploys. He tells Mary they are going to meet his “family”. She has no idea the hell awaiting her. They travel out of state and end up at this run-down house. Mary is confused when she sees other young girls, some a few years older than herself. They all look sad and scared. She soon realizes they are all “Johns” girls. He tells Mary if she really loves him she will do anything to make him happy… and so the nightmare begins. Never in her young 13 years did Mary imagine

she would be having sex with so many different men. She is so scared. She misses her family. They had their problems but it’s nothing like this. John promised to love and take care of her. She didn’t know being beat and sold for sex was love. John hits Mary often. She is never good enough, so he makes her believe. Mary and the other girls are often forced to watch as John beats one of them. They are told repeatedly if they ever try to leave or talk to anyone they or their families will be killed. Many of them have witnessed such threats. Fear is a powerful tool. Hell is a scary place. I could go on with gruesome details of this life Mary and many other victims live but I’m hoping you get the gist of this horrific activity occurring right under our noses. Human trafficking is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that is robbing girls of their youth and forcing them into modern-day slavery. How can we stop this? How can we help? I recently had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Lloydetta Kent, founder of Precious Fruit Ministries. Lloydetta’s passion is to help restore the life that has been stolen from these young girls by providing homes where they can heal. Precious Fruit Ministries is in the process of purchasing the first Restoration House which is a safe place for young girls who

have been rescued. It provides a safe loving atmosphere where the girls can feel safe from their traffickers, helps them get healthy physically, including dental and vision health, provides professional counseling and/or mentoring, provides discipleship, daily bible study and devotion, weekly chapel and worship services, life together as a family, education and job readiness (most of these ladies only have an 8th grade education), teaches life skills such as financial planning, household chores, grocery shopping, cooking and laundry. Transitional living assistance with lifetime mentorship upon graduation is also provided. They are close to being able to purchase the house but additional funds are needed. You can help by attending the 1st Annual Fall Fundraising Luncheon, October 26, 2013 at the Ballroom Revolution located at 3748 South Elm Place in Broken Arrow. Tickets are $15 and all proceeds will go to the purchase of the house. I look forward to attending this event and hope you join me. Tickets may be purchased through Eventbrite - http:// forthegirls-estw.eventbrite.com/ For more information on human trafficking and the Restoration House, please go to www.preciousfruitministries. com. I was involved in a motorcycle wreck on Mothers Day May 12, 2013. A car brake-checked us several times and then took off. When we looked back trying to get onto the highway they slammed on their brakes. We went over the curb and was pushed by the other bikes into traffic causing us to be t-boned by another car. Both cars left the scene of the accident. While being treated at the hospital the police found a boot knife on me. He then alleged we were in a biker gang. I was being prepped for emergency surgery and then I was being wrapped up and being kicked out. I had brain injury and broken arm and broken leg that was completely twisted backwards. I also had a concussion and lacerations on my liver and a collapsed lung. My partner had her head completed lacerated open and my brother had road rash that peeled the top of his face off. I have since lost the use of my left hand and have been unable to walk since the accident. This week I took steps of 60 ft in therapy. Everyone else has healed. My insurance did me good. The police said we were speeding but we were only doing 25 mph. Then they claimed we

were gang members and we were following to close. The other insurance companies finally came through and paid for medical and the bikes to be replaced and repaired. Angel “Hannibal Miller

A couple of years ago I was riding south on Lewis Ave in Tulsa. I got into the left turn lane and just as I came to the intersection an illegal immigrant decided to turn left from the inside lane. I slammed my bike to the ground sliding into the side of their SUV. Not only did the driver not speak English, they also failed to have ANY insurance whatsoever. Fortunately my injuries were minor; however, that wasn’t the case for my soft tail. She sustained massive injuries. If it were not for my uninsured/underinsured coverage I would not have a motorcycle to ride today. If you are riding a motorcycle in Oklahoma without having as much UM coverage as you can afford you are crazy. There are lots of drivers on our roads without adequate coverage if they run into you. Check with your insurance agent to find out how inexpensive UM coverage can be. Bryan Dermott

When a neighbor came by Dan Grimes garage with a question about a friends bike, Dan didn’t realize the chain of events and emotion it would bring. Dan asked his neighbor to bring the motorcycle over so that he could evaluate it. While looking the 77 HD Shovelhead over, he spoke to his neighbor about the bikes owner and made a decision. He decided to fix the multiple problems that the bike had at no charge. Why? The owner of the bike is a medic in the Army and is currently deployed in Afghanistan. Dan has served in the military and has a deep respect for what the medics, and all soldiers do. Now, being Dan’s garage, many friends and family stop by as he is a well loved and respected man in the community. Whether it be with questions, advice, a beer or a cookout, his garage is THE place to be! He told people that stopped by the problems with the bike and the story behind it and BAM, people started volunteering their time,

expertise and various items for the bike. This little fix-r-up project quickly turned into an overhaul---biker style! Jimmi Norman took the skins, hammered out the dents and imperfections, and gave it a stunning paint job. Jimmi’s cousin, Mike Stanley, is making a custom engraved leather seat that is absolutely incredible. Aaron Huggins polished the cases and rocker boxes so well that they will blind you. He also found someone to donate a set of saddle bags since the ones on the bike were torn and in bad shape. The list of those wanting to help grows weekly. The only things lacking now are new tires and wheels, a kick start level and some shiny accessories! The soldier’s wife and kids come by from time to time to check on progress and give suggestions as to what the soldier may prefer on the bike and they are in on the surprise! After all, who but a soldier fighting on foreign soil deserves it more? This just goes to show the deep respect that the biker community in our great state has for our military and what generous people they are. How can you help? Pray for his safe return...pray for all of our soldiers safe return. Sherry Fuentes Kelly

RIDE SKIATOOK LAKE EAT AT HWY 20 DINER

Guys and Gals… I live in Skiatook, Ok. Those of you who don’t live here may wonder, “Where the heck is Skiatook?” Its 15 minutes north of Tulsa on Highway – 75.

they are just now introducing “Biker Burger”!!!

The Highway 20 Diner has a sister store in Inola that is equally exceptional. You can check out there hours of operaThis little town doesn’t have a tion as well as all the specials in whole lot to offer. However… this addition of Oklahoma Bikthe things offered are excep- er!! tional!! Skiatook Lake is the (Great Place For a Dinner largest, deepest, and clearest Run!!) in the state. Oklahoma Biker Jeff “Slow Ride” Parnell Ragazine resides here, last but most certainly not least is the “Highway 20 Diner”. In February 2012, Robert Thulin and Paul Woodun embarked on a project to offer (you and I) the very best southern style food available- modestly priced. Readers, in over 5 decades this resultant is one of the finest I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Well worth your effort to check it out!! Manager Kim Tulk oversees the Highway 20 Diner, with 5 years of experience. Kim ensures each customer leaves with a smile on their face and their bellies full. The diner offers a variety of buffets and specials. Breakfast served all day and the Thursday night all you can eat fish buffet are my favorites. Also

Eddie Gill’s grandfather bought a barber shop in Tulsa in 1962. Charles Gill, Eddie’s father, started a barber shop in Tulsa in 1964. In 2003 Eddie Gill decided to go to barber school so he could carry on the family tradition. For three generations, or over fifty years, the Gill Family has cut hair and owned barber shops in Tulsa. For the last twenty-seven years the Gill family has owned the barber shop located at 6935 S Sheridan Rd in Tulsa.

Eddie Gill now owns and operates his father’s original barber shop. You may know Eddie and Patty Gill from their trike with Jesus on the front fairing. Patty suffers from MS and Eddie always takes good care of her. Let’s keep biker money in the biker community. If you need a haircut, or if you want to talk about the United Methodist Motorcycle Association, go by and visit Eddie at his barber shop. The Janitor Attics $350 and up

all the people in pickup trucks wave at all the other pickup drivers? No. So why in the hell do the bike riders? Just because you bought a bike, doesn’t make you a biker, doesn’t make you anyone’s “Bro” and doesn’t entitle you to shit! Here’s a little quiz for you, when you’re not in your weekend “Biker” attire and you’re in a Polo shirt and Khakis, do you wave at everyone in the restaurant when you walk thru it? I mean, they are all eating like you are. Would you wave at everyone in the Grocery store as you Here’s something that has pass them with your shopping always made me wonder, who cart? You both are there doing the hell is the idiot that decided the same thing. I’m pretty it was mandatory for all bike sure that the average person riders to wave at all bike that waves at me while I’m riders. Is this in some “Biker riding down the road first of all Code” somewhere? Did I miss wouldn’t: something, somewhere? Did 1. wave at me in a bar, this tradition come from TV, the internet or maybe some book I 2. wouldn’t give me the time of day, and may have not read? 3. sure as hell wouldn’t let I want you to think about me date their daughter. this for a minute. First and foremost, it is not safe for you Yet it amazes me that to remove your hand from the approaching each other at a handlebars at highway speeds. closure rate of more than 100 Most Riders don’t have that MPH, that this person all the much experience. Does sudden becomes some sillyeveryone in a car wave at all assed kind of Kindred Blood to the other car drivers? No. Do me. The AMA said that 99% of

RIDING & RANTING

all people that ride are good, law abiding people. How can you be sure you’re not waving to one of the “other” people? Don’t take all of this the wrong way, I grew up in a little “Mayberry” kind of town in Northeast Iowa and yes, everybody waves to their neighbors and their friends. I’m pretty sure that most of those people have known each other for years, some of them watched me grow up. When I ride past their house and they are sitting on the porch, I wave, I know them, HELL, we’ve met! I’m not above being both friendly and polite, my parents raised me right. But if you don’t know me…….. don’t Bro me! Besides, we all know it can’t be all that damn cool and trendy………. The guys from Sons of Anarchy don’t wave at anybody!

So Tony G Can Ride Again

Imagine walking into a room filled with people sporting full leathers, tattooed from head to toe, and wearing beards that make Duck Dynasty look like a little boys’ club. Now picture one of them breaking down into a song and dance and laughter coming from the crowd that can be heard from a mile down the road. This might sound a little odd but it is exactly the kind of stuff that you can expect when you first meet Priesthood Tony G. As an important part of the Tulsa motorcycle community, Priesthood Tony G., and his wife Barb G., have dedicated their lives to loving people and making a difference in the lives of everyone around them. About two years ago, Priesthood Tony G. received a report that completely altered his life; the report was life-threatening cancer. As most people know, going through cancer treatment

is not only physically and financially draining, but it can be emotionally exhausting. Although, this may have been true for Priesthood Tony G., he has not shrunk back from his life-long commitment to make a difference in the lives of those in the motorcycle community. Since his treatment started, Priesthood Tony G.’s loss of strength has forced him to keep the bike in the garage. That is why The Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry is committed to helping Priesthood Tony G. ride again. On Saturday, September 18, 2013, The Priesthood M/M will be hosting The Freedom Run Motorcycle Rally at God’s Shinning Light Church to raise funds for Priesthood Tony G. to trike his bike. This will be a tremendous opportunity for anyone in the Tulsa and surrounding area to show their love and support for Priesthood Tony G. and Barb G. as they continue on in their journey to overcome cancer. This family-friendly event is from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will include live music, a ScripturePoker Run, great food, a Kid’s Zone and giveaways including a Harley-Davidson gift card and prizes. God’s Shining Light is located at 9897 E 11th St Tulsa, OK 74128. For more information, please call (918) 836-7788 or go to www. gslfreedomrun.com. Ann Pebworth
