national attention. I am still unsure how the National Coalition of Motorcyclists learned about us; however, they awarded us the 2014 NCOM Silver Spoke Award in Media for our contributions to the motorcycling community. I wish to dedicate this national award to all of my children Tonya, Ashley, Colby, Tiffany, and Alex. They have taught me more about love, tolerance and acceptance than I ever dreamed possible.

With this issue Oklahoma Biker celebrates 10 years riding and writing! And what an awesome ride it has been. When we began I knew nothing about the magazine business. Many of you watched me make terrible decisions regarding the business aspect of The Rag, but somehow we were able to pull through. Today we print and distribute more free motorcycle magazines, and in more places, than any other motorcycle publication. We have certainly grown but not without lots of growing pains.

Next I wish to thank you, our readers and advertisers, for making this ride called Oklahoma Biker possible. You have continued to read our rants and ravings throughout I wish to thank the Tulsa Vo-Tech graphic these years, and arts class for helping us produce the first to invest your issue of The Rag. A helmet helps to protect your head from head injuries, considering head injuries are a major cause of death among motorcycle riders. Nevertheless, wearing a helmet is not enough; it is advisable to wear a solid helmet. There are many novelty helmets available in the market but they are not effective in providing maximum protection. Make sure to look for transportationapproved helmets because they have been tested to provide the required minimum standard of safety. Furthermore, it is important to buy a helmet that covers most of the head and fits properly (without being too loose or too tight). It should not in any way obstruct your vision. A full-face helmet provides protection all around, while a simple windshield protects the face from rain, rocks, and bugs. • Avoid Distractions Any form of distraction can be costly when riding a bike. Hence, it is important to stay hyper-sensitive to your environment. Motorcycles are usually difficult to see in SUVs and other larger cars and thus you need to see them first in order to avoid an accident. You also need to keep your iPod or phone tucked away in your jacket because you cannot afford to miss a second while you are on your motorcycle. You should not be talking on your cell phone, even if it is hand’s free, while riding your motorcycle. You should also avoid the temptation of wearing your headphones - you need to keep your senses. In addition, taking your hands off the bike reduces your control - the steering, acceleration, shifting, and braking is often compromised when you do this. If you do this, make sure the clearing and setting is safe.

Important Motorcycle Safety Tips for Both Pros and Beginners Motorcycle rides can be cool, but it is not as safe as driving a car. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid living on the edge by driving safely. Although motorcycles can move as fast as a car and faster and quicker in many cases, they lack important safety features. For example, they do not feature an exterior frame that can absorb crash forces and this is readily apparent to anyone who looks at them. As a result, the forces of collision are usually borne by the rider and the bike. Furthermore, motorcycles do not feature

seatbelts. Hence, riders face the risk of being thrown off in the event of an accident. Motorcycles are not as stable as motor vehicles because they operate on two wheels. They may be less safe when compared with cars but fortunately; there are several things a motorcyclist can do to minimize the risks, including: • Take a Safety Course In some states, if you are planning to obtain a license, you require a skills test from a motorcycle safety class. The classes endeavor to teach aspiring motorcyclists traffic safety laws in your state and effective ways of responding to an emergency. In addition, the safety classes give you an opportunity to try new skills within a controlled environment. The instructors also facilitate tips for maintenance and avoiding unsafe situations- you learn ways of recovering from a skid. Therefore, a safety course helps to prepare you to ride with confidence and safely. • Wear a Helmet One of the most important items you should never forget when riding is the helmet.

Rum Runnerz is quickly establishing itself among the biker community. Opened in January of this year, it hasn’t taken long for it’s reputation for live music, a friendly staff, and a large dance floor to spread. It isn’t uncommon to see various patched club members enjoying a beer and good conversation with each other. Each month, the owner of Rum Runnerz, Kelly Pfischer, chooses a different motorcycle organization to sponsor. That month, all of the proceeds earned over the costs are donated to that club for their various causes. B.A.C.A. (Bikers Against Child Abuse) and The Downed Riders are just two of the clubs that have benefited from Rum Runnerz’s efforts to highlight their causes and their donations. Recently, the club instituted a Bike Night, which they host every Thursday from 4pm-6pm. While Rum Runnerz does not define itself as a typical biker bar, they do welcome the two-wheeled riders among those who frequent the place. There are many events planned that will serve to increase the donations to various biker causes, and the future looks bright for the newest club on the block. Located at 822 South Sheridan Road, Tulsa, you can drop in and say hello anytime between 2pm and 2am,

Tuesday through Sunday. Some of the bands they host are established Tulsa favorites – Warp Drive, Electric Funeral, Mark Chamberlain & The Whiskey Poet Society, The Zigs, and the list goes on and on. For those who’d rather do the singing themselves, Rum Runnerz offers DJ-hosted karaoke nights. There are daily drink specials, women’s nights, and a variety of other incentives catering to their customers. Rum Runnerz has a decent selection of beer and liquors, with enough variety to please the pallets of just about anyone stopping in. Cruise by and say hi to the owner, Kelly Pfisher when you get a chance, or visit their website at www.rumrunnerz.net to see the line-up of bands and events they will be sponsoring. You can’t go wrong running with the crowd at Rum Runnerz. Bird

Oklahoma motorcycle accident lawyers, Anthony Gorospe and Zach Smith, understands the consequences of motorcycle accidents and offers a free initial consultation for those who have suffered an injury or loss due to a motorcycle collision. Motorcycle accidents can have consequences that are long-lasting or permanent and affect the lives of many people. Even if the safety guidelines are being followed and riders wear the necessary protective gear, there is a risk for an accident. Oklahoma motorcycle accident lawyers, Gorospe and Smith, understands the special concerns that motorcycle riders face when involved in an accident. With more than a decade of experience, the law office of Gorospe and Smith will be there to support the rider and their rights for obtaining the full amount of compensation that they are legally entitled to. Those involved in a motorcycle accident can see Anthony Gorospe or Zach Smith for a free consultation. Call 918.582.7775 or visit www.greencountrylaw.com for more information. Those who ride motorcycles are 35 times more likely to suffer a fatal accident than those who ride in other types of motor vehicles. The majority of these cases are caused by the other motor vehicle driver not seeing the motorcycle and violating the rider’s right of way. Motorcycle safety statistics show that wearing a helmet that has been approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT) can decrease the risk of severe head injuries by close to 70 percent. Wearing one of these approved helmets can also help to reduce the risk of death from a motorcycle accident by nearly 40 percent. Specially designed protective clothing is also available, with special padding in areas that are prone to injury during a motorcycle collision. While it is important for drivers of other types of motor vehicles to be more aware of motorcycles while out on the road, there are special skills that can be learned by motorcycle riders to help reduce the risk of serious injury during an accident. The motorcycle safety program in Oklahoma offers classes for both beginners and more experienced riders that teach important safety skills and maneuvers to use when watching for other drivers on the roads. There are several to choose from so pick the one you feel most comfortable with when choosing the course.

I asked my wife, Cheryl Briggs, what she would like to do for her birthday this year. She explained to me that she would like to go for a motorcycle ride with our friends and maybe do a cookout somewhere around Skiatook Lake. Of course I jumped at the

chance at getting to ride my motorsickle with my friends so I was quick to accommodate her. Little did I know what my wife truly had in mind for her “Birthday Ride.” Cheryl’s Birthday Ride quickly became Cheryl’s Birthday Bash Christmas in June Toy Run benefiting Ryder’s Army Childhood Cancer Awareness. Those of you who know Cheryl understand she will jump at any chance to assist others – especially children. So she decided for her birthday to help

Ryder’s Army raise toys for the Children’s Hospital at St. Francis in Tulsa and Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The new unwrapped toys you folks donate will be given to children suffering from cancer after their chemo treatments. We are told the toy closets at the hospitals begin running short of toys around July of each year. On Sunday June 22 we are gathering at the park in Sperry, OK located on Hwy 11 beginning at 11am. We will be leaving the park at 1pm and we will ride to Country Corner Fire Department located at 6983 W 113th St N. This will be a police escorted ride through the countryside to the fire station. Upon arrival there will be live music performed by Harley Hamm & friends, free hamburgers and hot dogs, and fingerprinting for children among other activities. If you are a vendor and would like to setup there will be no charge. Oklahoma bikers, with your assistance we will be able to collect lots of unwrapped toys for the children suffering from childhood cancer. We look forward to riding with you on this very worthwhile cause. For more information you can call 918.644.1267 or 918.260.7195

Plan To Attend Sparks America Bike Week in June If there is one thing I’ve learned being a biker chick from Oklahoma, it’s that bikers love to let their hair down. They work hard, ride hard, and play hard. And each year, they head out to Sparks, Oklahoma to party, party, party. Sparks, a tiny town located near Meeks and Chandler, boasts a population of approximately 169 citizens, a winery and the biggest, baddest biker rally Oklahoma has to offer. The Sparks America Campgrounds were designed specifically with old school bikers in mind. Riders gather to camp under the stars and enjoy the company of others who share their same love for the biker lifestyle. Under the campground’s new management, some improvements have been made for the rallies this year. There’s a new stage being built with lots more room, a stripper pole installed, and now there is room to dance while the bands are playing! Finally, all those naked girls will have something to do! The campground is covered in green grass, shaded by trees,

with an outdoor fire pit, and lots of cheap beer, live music, and bike contests. To fully experience the magic of this rally, you should plan to camp outdoors, but there are RV connections for those who like to party like animals but crash like humans. This year, you can compete in the first ever Oklahoma’s Greatest Biker Contest, and win $1000 or just participate in the many other biker contests that have been lined up. There’s never a boring minute at this rally. So, be gearing up to attend the 10-day festivities from June 19 to 29, 2014, located in Sparks, Oklahoma and usher in the dog days of summer biker-style. I hope to see you there. For more information about the ticket prices, RV reservations, or the campgrounds, you can go to sparksamericacampgrounds.com. Bird

Fillabun Great Taste in Small Space I had ridden past Fillabun several times without giving it much thought. Looked like a little hole in the wall eatery to me - nothing that really caught my attention and commanded me to stop and eat there. Finally Mike and Paul persuaded me to try Fillabun. Man, am I glad I did! The first thing I noticed when entering Fillabun is the cleanliness. Next came the friendly greeting from the Loretta. You will get outstanding service from Loretta. The menu is extensive for such a small place, and you can count on Larry to cook your food to perfection. Folks, the Barnetts are doing an incredible job at Fillabun. I urge you to stop in and try them the next time you ride down Hwy 11 in Sperry. Oh, and did I mention how clean their restaurant is?! Fillabun is located on Highway 11 in Sperry, OK. 918.638.8635

We have come to realize the indescribable truth behind this scripture. Put in the work, never give up, don’t cut corners and do it all for the glory of God and you WILL change the world. Brothers and sisters – life IS hard but putting forth the effort to do something truly amazing for God and His people is the Way.

Well our U.M.M.A. Annual retreat, “Fire on the Water” is almost here and man has it been a LOT of work to get ready! Raising money, contacting businesses, rounding up volunteers, securing materials, all while continuing to live out our own ministries. Yes it has been difficult but the U.M.M.A. (United Methodist Motorcycle Association) “Round Table” has done an absolutely amazing job.

The work for this has been done and now it is nearly time to enjoy the end result and we hope that you will join us for Fire on the Water at Fin and Feather Resort May 16th through 18th. You are all invited to partake in fun, fellowship and worship all in the name of Jesus Christ. Hope to see you there. Pastor Matt

Don’t air the ad and use that money to feed them like forever, it’s only 39 cents a day, right? It’s sad that the Government would cut the benefits of Veterans that served this country and defended the freedom we enjoy, and then vote themselves a pay raise. How about taking a pay cut? The Jamesville Y Bar is the perfect destination for the biker who loves a scenic, lazy ride before settling down to a cold beer and friendly conversation. The small town of Jamesville exists now mostly in our memories, but the bar actually has been in

existence all the way back to the 1930’s, built near the fork in the road separating Old Taft Road and Highway 72. Hence the name, The Jamesville Y. Located a few miles outside of Haskell, people are more than happy to travel the extra distance to gather there. There is no lack of events designed to please everyone. Thursdays boast a bike night starting at 6pm and ending whenever the fun subsides. Ladies’ Night is every Friday from 7pm – 10pm, where beer prices are a mere $1.50. Almost every Saturday, there is live music featuring some of Oklahoma’s more popular bands… Crossroads, Darrell Lee, VCR Band, and some rising stars, too, like Billy K. For those who enjoy things a little less noisy, Jamesville Y has an outdoors 41

Besides running a thriving business, the owners, Clint and Amanda Saxon, are busy organizing a poker run to benefit Emily and Hallie Cooper, two children whose parents died within 48 hours of each other. Their children were heavily involved in the FFA (Future Farmers of America) organization together, and they hope to garner enough attention to these kids’ plight that this occasion can become an annual event. Since no one supports a cause better than the bikers in Oklahoma do, it’s this writer’s hope that this cause gets the attention it deserves. Jamesville Y Bar is open Wednesday to Friday, 4pm to 2am, and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 2am. Worldwide Women’s Motorcycle Ride Day Makes Switch from Friday to Saturday May 3rd.

WHERE THE WHITE MAN WENT WRONG Cherokee Chief Two Eagles was asked by a white U.S. Government official, “You have observed the white man for 90 years. You’ve seen his wars and his technological advances. You’ve seen the progress, and the damage he’s done.” The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, “Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?” The Chief stared at the government official then replied, “When the white man find land, Indians running it, not taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work. Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.” Then the chief leaned back and smiled, “Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.” 43

To Be Blessed or Not to Be Blessed By Cheryl Briggs

stuff…our bank accounts? Could it be our blessings are the things we take for granted like hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, and feeling? How about the freedom God gave us to make choices? That is a big blessing, don’t you think? My pastor years ago spoke of a family who had lost their child to a tragic accident. Their little boy was riding his bicycle when a car hit him. The child died on impact. The father ran to the boy and cradled him in his arms and looked to heaven. He didn’t scorn God but instead he thanked God for sharing this beautiful little boy with him. The parents spoke of the gift God had graciously I have to agree with Mr. Dannemiller that blessed them with. They were grateful we have become a society which has for the time they did have him and the joy associated material fortune with being they felt from the love of their little boy. blessed. I think of my Grandparents who Blessed…also means self-contained were very simple people. They didn’t happiness…feeling happiness in the have much, but they were very happy midst of the storm. Money cannot buy and surrounded by friends and family who loved them. Were they less blessed these blessings. They are there for all of by God because they didn’t drive a fancy us. I don’t believe God finds favor in one person over the other. I don’t believe the car or live in a big house. person with more stuff is blessed more Did God not find them worthy enough than the person with nothing. Blessings to have a big bank account? This are amongst us, within us. Humble is where so many people become yourself for a moment. Listen and feel disheartened because they place their the blessing one breath at a time. value and blessings on fortune. Men and women have committed suicide in the name of money. Many people’s self worth unfortunately is a reflection of their bank account. When there is a loss of “stuff” or monies they feel God is punishing or has betrayed them. They ask themselves “why doesn’t God bless me, am I not worthy?” Could it be our blessings have nothing to do with our Blessed; Greek word makarios meaning to be happy or blissful, also means selfcontained happiness. I read this article not too long ago called The One Thing Christians Should Stop Saying by Scott Dannemiller, blogger of the Accidental Missionary. The article got me thinking about the meaning of being blessed.
