Jack Lenor Larsen Aurelia Munoz with Macra I, 1969, from Beyond Craft: The Art of Fabric by Mildred Constantine and Jack Lenor Larsen, 1972 San Francisco Design Center was the first place of our field trips. We were hosted by Michael Merrill, owner and designer of Michael Merrill Design Studio. He guided us through, as I understood, two his favorite showrooms in the center, Cowtan&Tout and Sloan Miyasato. Both of them are multiline showrooms, so they are working with more then one brand.
Primavera, 1960, by Don Wight for Larsen
Cowtan&Toout is a textile showroom that works with such brands as Larsen, Manuel Canovas, Cowtan&Tout, Colefax&Fowler and Jane Churchill. Michael emphasized on two brands Larsen and Manuel Canovas. The last one is French brand and more popular in Europe, but still has fans in U.S.
I was curious about Larsen Fabric. Jack Lenor Larsen is a textile designer and a founder of Larsen logo; in addition to that, an author and collector and promoter of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship in all its forms. I’ve read a little part about his personality and found him very inspiring.
Michael explain us some nuances about textile business. A rack, that holds fabric, has a poetic name Wing. Showrooms arrange fabrics by color, from light to dark on colorwings. High-end textile showrooms prefer to keep bigger samples on wings, that allows to client and designer to understand the quality and beauty of product. Pattern and color are two the most significant futures of textile.

Designers Tips from Michael Merrill •Make decision fast •Trust your first feeling •Learn how to count the price for client fast •More important relationship, proportions and right place for interior design, color goes second •Inspect and control customers’ orders. If you ordered furniture for client, you should be on site when it arrives to make sure that everything goes smoothly. •Collect a library for your and clients inspiration
Sloan Miyasoto is a multiline showroom too. I feel that they work with both traditional and contemporary styles. I liked the lighting from Phoenix Day. I found out that Phenix Day is one of the oldest business in San Francisco. They have been here since 1850. They make hand-crafted lighting fixtures, combining traditions with a modern aesthetic. Almost two hours in the company of Micheal Merrill flew fast. Warm and hostile atmosphere assure me that his clients are lucky and have a good time with Michael. He gave us some tips that are useful in the interior design profession.

In the Maharam showroom the first thing that “greeted us was Polder sofa by Hella Jongerius and Vitra. The sofa is very outstanding with its simple asymmetry shape and color mixture. It was comfortable to sit and pleasant texture to touch.
Hours Cartoon by Franciska Meijers is a student at Design Academy Eindhoven and recent intern at Jongeriuslab.
I was browsing on Maharam site and encountered the Stories page. One particular story interested me the most. It was the Hours cartoon by Hella Jongerius and Franciska Meijers. I found it interesting because this cartoon was designed as story to support the same

name fabric Hours. I appreciated the idea of story behind the pattern. I understood that the price for fabric consists not only with tangible ingredients, but also with inspiration, time, design process and part of an author soul.

I found interesting their furniture for activity space. The Power cube is multifunctional thing, it can be used as a table, as place for notes; the outlets are installed wisely from every side; in addition, it is

It was a wonderful day in Herman Miller Showroom. We had a sophisticated discussion about life changes, technologies, politics and how they influence contemporary work environment. I like an idea that today a working space can be as comfortable and cozy as your favorite couch at home. Henry Miller’s office today is open, lit with light, bright colors in furnishing, and served with newest technologies. Today, work is more then just a position and making money. It is a way of life. It is dynamic. A working space can be transformed into creative
space for team work from dinning space. Creative atmosphere can be created in less formal space. Working process is an exiting game not an obligation anymore. Henry Miller has a long history and has various ideas for furnishing contemporary offices. It specializes on chairs, both ergonomic and regular ones, workspaces with tables and storages. Henry Miller still produce midcentury design furniture as the Eames Lounge Chair and and the Nelson platform bench. The last one, in my opinion, is still up to date.
