VIS 401 Design Studio V Assignment A Professor Paul Bantey Overview Students propose, plan, and carry out a Senior Project within a given broadly defined theme of philanthropic institutions. The proposed project should be positioned in a real context and provide students with an experience of the multi-disciplinary and collaborative nature of design. It should extend from research and development through to the translation of students’ concepts into concrete design solutions. The project will be developed in conjunction with course instructors. Students will work individually. Students are required to develop a well-defined design process, demonstrate design management and produce documentation and presentation of an integrated design outcome. The project is expected to stand on its own as finished work, as well as give substance to an eventual final portfolio. Projects will be evaluated on the creation and presentation of four components: > > > >

Assignment sheet is an essential part of the process, as it helps in building down the first and most important elements of the project. It is also a project reference to the student till the minute of production.
7 Initial Research
Etisalat is the Middle East’s leading telecommunications operator and one of the largest corporations in the six Arab countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, with a market value of approximately Dh81 billion (US$22 billion) and annual revenues of over Dh32.9 billion (US$9 billion). A multinational, blue-chip organisation, Etisalat has operations in 15 countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Nearly 42,000 people are directly employed by the company.
Emaar Properties, based in the United Arab Emirates, is a Public Joint Stock Company (PJSC) listed on the Dubai Financial Market. Established in 1997 with an initial paid-up capital of AED 1 bn. Emaar Properties is currently the Persian Gulf region’s largest land and real estate developer. With over 60 companies, Emaar’s activities include property investment and development, property management services, education, healthcare, retail and hospitality sectors, as well as investing in financial service providers.[6] In 2007, the government of Dubai, through the Investment Corporation of Dubai, took a 32%equity stake in Emaar by exchanging land for 28 billion AED worth of stock

Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages.
First step of branding was giving options of companies we thought they need to change their design identity. It was important to do research about the history and vision of the company along with looking at the design strategy of the logo.

NBAD’s growing international network consists of about 60 branches and offices in 18 countries stretching across five continents from the Far East to the Americas, giving it the largest global network among all UAE banks.
Our mission has been the road map for leading to the bank’s significant role in developing Arab economies through financing strategic infrastructural projects across the Middle East /North Africa region (MENA).
Established as a Public Joint Stock Company in 1982, we are one of the leading domestic banks in the United Arab Emirates and are headquartered in Abu Dhabi. We offer a variety of products and services, addressing needs ranging from basic requirements of individuals to the more complex requirements of corporate entities. Electronic delivery channels, ably supported by an extensive network of Banking Centers spread across the emirates, offer greater banking convenience to our customers.
Narrowing down the research, I chose to re-brand a bank. Therefore, I started doing research about regional and international banks, and comparing their logo and logo type to one other.
9 Initial Research
UNITED ARAB BANK, P.J.S.C. (UAB) was incorporated in 1975 as a joint venture between diverse UAE investors and the French international financial conglomerate, Société Générale (SG).

My final decision on which bank to re-brand was upon the weakness of the logo and logo type design of the bank. I have compared United Arab Emirates local bank to each other, and reached to a conclusion that United Arab Bank is one of the weakest, which I would be able to design better logo than what they already have.

Before starting the design process, I had to do research for regional and international banks logos to get inspired by their design. The research included number of banks of each continent, starting with the Asian and Gulf region banks.

After getting inspired with other banks logos in the world, It was important to look at the characteristics that differs a bank in the UAE than any other banks in the region or in the world. Four main symbols were used to start the design procedure of United Arab Bank (UAB) re-branding, the Falcin, Dagger, Arabesque and the fort which is used in their original logo.

Narrowing down the design symbols that I have chosen, I decided to use the fort as my logo design element as it a strong representation of strength and protectively in the gulf and in the UAE specifically. Moreover, It was important during re-branding to keep some of the elements of the original logos, which in this case the fort.

In this set of graphic translation, there is an attempt to have less elements of the fort by masking the drawings with geometric shapes.

In this direction, line weights were used to show the outline of the fort, in order to reach to the most minimal graphic translation of the it.

At early stages I chose to experiment with abbreviation of the bank, which is UAB, along with the graphic drawings that I have created.

After that, I decided to investigate different typefaces with full bank name, I tried to generate my own typeface along with using the existing ones. It was crucial to choose typefaces that presents strength and growth.

The final steps towards the final logo was fixing the chosen typefaces along with the final logo drawing. Studying the spaces between the Arabic and English type with logo drawing was a crucial part of the process in order to reach to final logo design.

In order to choose the colour palette of the logo, I had to go back to my initial research and look for the colour palette of the regional and local banks.

Choosing between the last two options was according to position of the logo drawing with the typeface. We also had to choose where the Arabic type should go above the English or the other way around.

Brand personality: As a bank project, there characteristics that the designer should have in mind during creating their identity: - The logo should be a strong representation of strength, growth, stability, and security. - The logo symbol should be presenting the country heritage and culture. - While re branding the logo should have few elements from the original logo, like the fort in UAB case. - The typefaces, both in English and Arabic should also present the strength and security of the bank. - The colour palette should also be rich, solid and formal. - Bank application should be classy and formal. -Bank clients would always keep their bank papers and applications, therefore, the designer should put into consideration the type of client that uses this bank, in order to design the application according to their nationality or type of business.
