Architectual Styles from 1700 By: Justin

Georgian

The Georgian style was a very elegant style meant to show how wealthy someone who might own this style of house would be. One of the main materials used for construction was brick with white framed windows covering the front. another key feature is the pillars at the sides of the front door.

Federal

Federal is a very simple style with few embellishments like multi-pane windows and Shudders. This style of housing was usually made of brick or had horizontal wood siding. The style was meant to look very symmetrical as if you could cut it down the middle and have matching halves. It also many times included pilasters in decorated the front porch area.

Greek Revival

The Greek revival style as it is named was meant to emulate the style of greek bulding with there elegance and beauty. These homes were usually painted white like the marble and stone that was used in Greece. One of the most key characteristic of these homes is the evenly spaced pillars in the very front of the home.

Italianate

Italianate homes use many neutral and red tones all over the house most of the time going with a darker more calm color for the walls and a lighter more bold color for things like the roof windows and moldings. Arched doorways are a very common sight for this style, along with shudders on the windows.

Victorian

The style has often been compared to a dollhouse. It came after the gothic style and style has some gothic design peices. Every victorian house is a little different and unique to it’s builder. It also has many moldings and cornices’ and is highly embelished

Colonial Revival

Colonial revival was a style popular during the early 1900’s. some of the most common materials used are wood and brick. A noticeable feature is the windows on the front of the house usually with shudders to the side of them. This style usually has a very boxy shape. It also will sometimes include a covered porch supported by pillars.

Prairie

The style is a very natural style using a lot of rock and dark neutral colors. It uses mainly gable roofing and is meant to blend into nature. All around the house there are windows looking into the home and often includes rock and natural textures all around. The style is meant to blend into nature almost like it’s part of the surroundings.

Craftsmen

The craftsman style of architecture is a very popular style of home today. You can find examples of these homes driving around the suburbs of many areas. The style often combines the use of hip and gable roofing to create a very simple and clean look. it is many times decorated with pillars in the front creating a sort of porch area. the style is also fond of windows.

Ranch

Ranch style homes are one story homes that are very simple and are meant to accommodate a family. A lot of the time the house will be lined with windows in the front and have a covered porch supported by pillars. The colors of these homes can vary greatly and they can be found in almost any suburban community.

Shed

Shed style homes often come in very odd shapes with many intriguing angles. The main draw to these homes are the protruding roofs that cover the home. These homes are often built in a very secluded natural setting in the mountains or similar regions.

A-Frame

The A-frame style home is exactly what you would imagine when you hear the name. It’s a house that is built inside an A-frame often covered in the front by windows. The house is not ideal for families because it would be very difficult to expand off of the house and attach another room.

Geodesic

The geodesic style is the strangest of all the styles. It’s a style that is half a dome sitting on the ground big enough to live/work in. The curve of the dome is usually covered in shingles with windows that are usually triangular. This style is used more for businesses than family because of it’s weird layout.
