Architectual Styles from 1700 by Kennedy Elton
Georgian
The Gerogian style home was popular in the 1700’s-1780’s. They were created by wealthy land owners who wanted to show off their wealth. These houses are characterized by brick, columns, and symmetery.
Federal
These homes were inspired by the new federal government after the American Revolution. They most often have multi levels, chimneys, and spaces in between the windows.
Greek Revival
These homes are inspired by ancient Greek architecture. They have large white columns, a porch entry, and highly decorated cornices.
Italianate
These homes are inspired by the houses in Italy. The Italianate homes are characterized by arched doorways, tower like windows. and typically have large brackets.
Victorian
Popular from 1860-1900, these houses were built during the Industrial Revolution, combining styles from different eras and adding imaginatation
Colonial Revival
Popular from the 1860’s to 1940’s, this style is well known for it’s evenly spaced windows, columed doors, and double chimneys on the roof. This style was inspired by the colonists of early America, and the housing style they brought with them across the sea.
Prarie Style
These houses are categorized by single floor floor plans, and were popular from the 1950’s onward. Frank Lloyd Wright created these houses to destroy the popular, boxy houses of the day.
Craftsman Style
The Craftsman style gained popularity in the 1960’s and remains popular today. They have many windows, arched roofs, and are typically built with brick and wood.
Ranch Style
This style became widely popular in the 1970’s. It was idealistic for famililes with small children, and therefore eliminated the top floor. These houses are flat, wide, and are most commonly made of brick or painted wood.
Shed Style
The shed style gained popularity in the late 1970’s into the early 1980’s, and is categorized by it’s shed like roof, and block like arrangement.
A-Frame Style
The A-Frame style home is popular in regions with heavy precipitation. It is shaped in the “A� shape to help the precipitation slide off the roof, avoididng flooding.
Geodesic House Style
The Geodesic home style is uncommon, but arguably very intresting style. The dome shape is very good for preserving heat and cold during the temprate months. These houses are very popular in places where it is very hot or very cold.
