Shopping on a budget Staying stylish and up with the trends is hard as a teenager. Especially when trends come with big price tags. However, there are ways to get around them and we are here to show you the in’s and outs of shopping on a budget. Before you step foot in a store or get online review what you have. Look at your wardrobe and see what you really “need”. If you have a lot of items that are out of style or you do not wear anymore get rid of them. Donate or sell your non used clothing. This is going to help you stay on task when shopping. Also cleaning out your closet can help you decipher what clothes you NEED and what clothes you WANT. When shopping on a budget it Is best to shop for items you need. To start off your shopping trip you should always give yourself a set budget of what you want to spend and the key here is to, wait for it, actually stick to the set budget. A way to help with that is to pay with cash. This way you know you have the money you are spending and won’t have to stress about it by the time the monthly credit card bill comes. Next start at low end retailers. Thrift stores, yard sales, and consignment sales typically stock lightly used clothing and accessories for a much lower price than what they were originally priced at. And if you get lucky in finding many clothing items your wallet will thank you. Rather than paying for two or three items that total the same price at another store. Stick to buying the “basics” or “classics”. Pieces that will never go out of style or item you will always need. Your closet should consist of 75% classic or basic pieces and 25% of what is trendy or “in”. This way every year you won’t be throwing out your whole
closet and will only have to replace a few items. Buy for opposite seasons. When buying summer clothes, we suggest buying them in the fall when retailers are trying to get rid of them, there are many sales and high-quality items are marked way down. Same thing when it comes to winter, buy in early spring for again the obvious reason of end of season sales. Upcycle. Along with thrifting also comes upcycling. You take an older style item and make it new or your own. Upcycling can give a fun new twist to anything, whether its jeans that you distress yourself (because lets face it buying 60$ pre ripped jeans, compared to 25$ plain jeans is a way better deal), or a jacket that you sew fringe to, upcycling is very versatile and is an easy way to keep up with new fads. Lastly get creative. Interchange outfits and switch up different combinations. This is where having basic items in your wardrobe helps. Take a white tee, it can be paired with jeans and sneakers for a casual look but can go under a dress for another look. Or it can be dressed up under a blazer and straight patterned pants for a night out. The outfits are endless, when buying a clothing item make sure it will go with different outfits for many different occasions.

Through the decADES: CULTURE & PEOPLE
Fashion has been different through culture throughout the decades. Most have similarity but having different cultures it shows the difference and how their culture wore it at the time. While being different some trends from the late decades are returning back to today’s fashion. The Hispanic and Black culture was the most influence in the U.S. People getting influenced by the fashion back then is causing clothing to return in an expensive way. The Hispanic style has been based on what people called “Cholas” for woman style or “Cholos” for the men. Some of the Latin fashion icons include Selena, J-Lo, Juan Gaberial, Sofia Vergara, Pitbull, and Some of the most trendy styles and accessories that come from these influencers. The most popular was a Dark lip liner. The liner was usually a really 6
dark brown, burgundy, or even black color. It would show a dark outside with a bright red or color in the center. Other accessories they used were bandana as a headband or using that bandana as another clothing piece. It even works as a crop top! Anything Baby Phat, Roc-A-Wear, or Sean Jean. Baby Phat also has come back into the fashion world in the last year. Bringing back their famous signature black cat. Roc-A-Wear is mostly for their women’s jeans embroidered with an “R”. Having their signature “R” on your back pocket was important to show off. From showing off their curvey figure having designs on the back pocket of their jeans was to insinuate their waste. Latin fashion has been based on different movements and artists. Latin fashion is being brought back into the days of fashion weather in everyday
fashion or costumes. Black fashion has had more influence than any culture back in the days and into days of fashion. Rappers have had a big influence on men’s fashion while girl groups had an influence on women’s fashion. Bucket Hats a style popularized by LL Cool J. Bucket hats were popular in hip-hop fashion by members of Wu-Tang Clan. Kangol style of hat’s since was most popular since it was the one worn regularly by rappers in the late 80s early 90s. Overalls had been popularized in the ‘90s. Fitted or baggy, strapped up or with one hanging off, people style it with T-shirts, and hoodies. The clothing got its popularity from TLC, Will Smith, and Tupac. The durag was a staple of hip-hop style in the 90s and early 2000s. People wore it united under a fitted baseball cap, Strings tied to the back but laid flat on his forehead to avoid leaving the marks when he removed it. Jay-Z used to wear his with the strings tied to the back. The Champion Hoodies has recently returned years as a surprise. As many had known champion as a cheap brand sold at Walmart. It was brought back by Supreme’s regular collaborations with the brand. The brand’s unusual styled sweatshirts with oversized hoods were the style of choice in hip-hop culture during the early ‘90s, as well as the hardcore punk scene in cities like New York. General Fashion in the decades included bell-bottoms that were popular towards the end of the ‘60s and up until the late ‘70s. The ‘70s served it as a less a purpose of function and more one of fashion. This trend could be worn with flared denim jeans, or out to the disco in wild floral pattern. Usually dressed in bell-bottoms were style with the platform heel. The style took off in the modern era during the decade of disco. With disco culture at its peak, the footwear began to match the excessiveness
of the outfits associated with the disco era. Starting in the 1970s, athletic shoes became so popular as footwear that adults refused to give up wearing them. Everyone wanted the look and feel of sneakers on their feet. Many new athletic shoe companies emerged and marketed a wide variety of basketball and other sports and leisure shoes. People in the 80s and 90s were likely to be wearing high-top, low-top sneakers like Reeboks or Nikes. After all, sneakers are still at the top of the shoe game list. People say Audrey Hepburn is the reason that the Little Black Dress. Her signature look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Givenchy column gown, 3-strand pearl necklace, large tortoiseshell sunglasses, sleek updo, diamond earrings, and cigarette holder. Designer clothing was very popular through the decades and today’s date. Jackie Kennedy grabbed the public’s attention with her simple fashion sense. From boxy Chanel suits to Halston pillbox hats, she reshaped fashion’s view to women having to dress formal all the time to letting women dress down for business. While being dressed in designer clothing many others got their inspiration from Katharine Hepburn an actress is known for her personality on the screens, had a big influence in her time. Katharine had her own personal style that gave off that “American” look, whereas her off-screen wardrobe favored sportswear. Sportswear in today’s fashion is still big in everyday wear, whether its men or women. Many designers use sportswear to create a higher class look. In today’s fashion, it’s all about looking at the nicest, having the most expensive clothes just to flex on people that they have money and can get what others want. Other people style down and shop at thrift stores to get that certain decade look. 7
How To Take Good Pictures Of Yourself
Everyone wants to take the best pictures for their Instagram, Facebook, any social media platform. In 2019, social media runs the world, everyone, adults, teens, kids, have usernames and passwords for at least two accounts. Other than content, pictures are what people are looking at. Pictures are the main focus of any page or post. Here are some tips on how to take the best pictures of yourself and highlight all your right angles. Keep in mind, it is about what you think and nobody else. So, when you feel good the picture is bound to look good. Confidence is key. Tip #1- Everyone has a good side. Not everyone is blessed with a perfect symmetrical face, really, nobody’s perfect. Knowing your best side and the right angles for your face and body, is essential for taking the best pictures. While you’re in front of the camera, make sure the best side of your face is facing the camera. If you can move your hair to make it look fuller and more voluminous, do it! Tip #2- Make your face look more enthusiastic. No one wants to look dead and un-interested in photos. To make your face more perky, raise your eyebrows just a little, slightly open your mouth when you’re smiling. That will give your face a little taste of excitement and emotion. Tip #3- Prepare. If you know you want to take good photos one day, before you go put on a little extra make-up. The camera always makes things less noticeable, so putting on something extra will help everything pop and stand out. Tip #4- Location or background. When taking a picture of yourself or getting a picture taken of yourself make sure the background fits the aesthic of the overall look you are trying to achieve. Remember you want to be the center of attention, so pick a backdrop that will highlight you. Should be colorful and not too busy. 8
Tip #5- Camera angles. If you’re taking a picture of yourself, make sure you take your photo as a landscape. It helps the picture have space and depth in it. If someone else is taking a picture of you straight on, it always helps to turn your face to the side. It defines your bone structure. When taking a picture, it’s always best to make sure the camera, whatever it’s on, to be tilted downward or upward. If the camera is at a higher angle tilted downward, it gives the picture more depth and draws focus to your face. If the camera is at a higher angle, tilt it upward to make yourself look taller and your legs look longer.
Tip #6- The rule of thirds. In photography a great way to take pictures of anything is using the rule of thirds. This counts for taking pictures of people or yourself as well. The rule of thirds refers to your subject in the picture not being centered. If the subject is off centered, it’s more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It just makes the picture look better altogether. Tip #7- Lighting. Find the good natural lighting for your picture. Sometimes using the flash in photos looks good, but if you can find the best natural lighting and face it, that’s always going to work out. Avoid facing your back to the light, because the picture will come out dark, possibly with your face will be completely shadowed.

Clothing accessories makeup
Throughout the decades clothing accessories and makeup trends have changed radically. New styles emerging every 10 years or so. However, look at today, every new trend and fad are not new at all. They are inspired and inventive new twist on classic looks that go all the way back to the 20’s. Let’s talk clothes, let’s talk fashion. The 20’s, the first-time women’s clothing was seen in a new light. Flappers popularizing short skirts and dresses. Also, designer Coco Chanel revolutionizing design of the little black dress that is referenced in the 21st century. In the 1930’s fur was in fashion and it became a luxury piece in women’s wardrobes. Christian Dior introduced a silhouette that took over in the 40’s. With structured shoulders and an accentuated waistline this style became a feminine statement. On the flip side in the 60’s the baby doll dress was 12
seen everywhere. A newfound liberation among women left them seeking styles that were not restricting. This combined with an ultra-short hemline was what feminist were looking to articulate. The bell bottoms made a rise in the late 60’s and to the late 70’s. These flared pants became fashion that could be worn casually or to disco in wild patterns. A drastic shirt into the 80’s took place as leather jacket and punk style became mainstream. The working woman movement influenced power dressing and shoulder pads were a big part of this. Prevalent in blazers and making its way into some dresses. In the 90’s a minimalist look was embraced. Slip dresses in sheer fabrics or colors like grey white and black ruled the runway. Fashion today is looking to the past for inspiration more than any other decade. A retro fashion movement. Super flared pants from the 70’s and skinny jeans from the 80’s. Mini dresses and blazers are both considered
as fashion today, but it is resurfaced from a previous time. Fur and leather also being among old id new trends. Our decade has taken the cycling of trends to a new level and perhaps will go down as a time of confidence, dare say defiance. Accessories are what pulls a whole look together the right (or wrong) ones can make or break an outfit and what it was trying to achieve. They also serve functional purposes too like a handbag that stores everyone’s secrets. Besides the point during the 1920’s and 30’s women wore lavish jewelry that shined bright. The 30’s being more inspired by Hollywood glamour. Diamonds took over in the 40’s. Every woman demanded a diamond engagement ring. Then it transitioned to an ultimately sophisticated look that was very put together and pearls got the job done. In the 50’s handbags were smaller and balanced out the full skirt, also matching perfectly with an outfit. As well as winged sunnies that were feminine and bold. The 60’s brought a new trend not seen before; large plastic pieces were popular. Statement necklaces and earrings coming in a wide variety of colors and shapes. The newfound accessorizing was a cry of freedom. Then came jewelry that was toned down however still bold. Creating many pieces from metals. Also, platform heels were very popular throughout the 70’s and embroidered bags that were soft and had bohemian vibes. In the 80’s people mixed and matched everything from handbags to necklaces and earrings because it was all basedon DIY and personalization. In the 90’s there were chockers, chockers, and more chockers. As well as many other tacky kinds of accessories. Along with the petite pochette that women carried as bags. Today we see all these trends flooding back. Super small sunnies that are winged in their own way and platform shoes of all different kinds. Large and in charge statement earrings dominate the runway and the streets full of vibrant colors and shapes. No matter what was in style back then it has found a way to make its way in todays modern fashion. Whether the look has stayed classic or designers have put a new twist there is inspiration from all these decades an it is prevalent. During the 1920s the movie industry boomed, and Hollywood popularized many cosmetic products.
Makeup artists and actresses influenced how the public used makeup. Designers also followed Hollywood’s lead. Coco Chanel popularized a now classic look: dark eyes, red lipstick and a suntan. However, with the rise of mainstream feminism in the 1960’s and 1970’s many women partook in an anti-cosmetic movement. Claiming that makeup was a tool in objectification. The unmade-up face “the honorable new look of feminism”-Susan Brownmiller This same time period in the 70’s also saw a new introduced world of the lady saleswoman. Despite the feminist movement the popularity of makeup provided opportunities for women inventors, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers. KISS’s presence was a part of the New York glitter movement. Other rock band looks normalized an outlandish makeup style especially on men. Defying gender norms. In the 1980s there was access to every cosmetic imaginable, this decade highlighting a bright eye shadow teamed with bold lipstick and big hair. Normcore and grunge became mainstream in the 1990’s. Faces were clean and natural or featured statement kohled eyes and dark lips. Combine all these decades and you have today, the 21st century. Where makeup is for everyone. Gender equality movements happening all around and the line between who can and can’t wear makeup is even more blended. Makeup is a tool of self-expression. Makeup trends that have resurfaced are making a big wave in the public on all along the runway. Neon colored eyes are coming back in a new way. Two defining tones and shapes that coordinate with an equally bright outfit. Captures the colors and a bright eyeshadow look from the trends in the 80’s however incorporated into different styles that are prevalent today. Another resurfaced movement is GLITTER. Models have been featured in fashion shows with heavily defined glitter eye. Girls and boys everywhere have been embracing glitter in many different makeup fads. Like glitter tears and glitter lips. Resurfaced trends are also seen in everyday looks and in street wear. The classic 1950’s cat eye winged eyeliner, is seen on everyone and everywhere. Perfecting the perfect flick is what everyone strives to. 13

While it’s not appropriate for workwear for everyday fashion looks great. The look would go great with a Shrunken Bag its size is what sets it apart from the rest. It values style over function. It’s small enough that it will only fit your phone and lipstick if possible. While bikers shorts and a shrunken bag isn’t so work-appropriate, dressed down suits could be considered. Oversized suites are boring just being worn casually but it’s all about the belt. Blazers came with built-in cinchers at Prada, and Marni contrasted gray suits with heavy chains. Another style trend is the Neo-Gothic look. The street style had a big influence on the trend. Wearing black clothing with different chain accessories, It’s a mix of high and low-end clothing. Baggy mixed with skin-tight clothing. Plaid pants are also a big part of this trend it makes an edgy look to any wardrobe. Keep in mind in today’s day it’s okay to have a more masculine style if your a girl and a more feminine style if your a guy. Today’s fashion is not about judging others’ fashion sensealthough it’s okay to judge sometimes- If you don’t like it’s okay to try and find a different one till you find one you really like. 17
Self confidence & Positivity
Teens everywhere ask what it takes to be more positive about themselves and their bodies. We might not have all the answers, but here at Resurfaced we have a few tips and advice that addresses this question. In the age of social media teens find it hard to love themselves. Constantly viewing post that contain men and women with perfectly toned bodies or the highest quality clothes and accessories leaves teens everywhere feeling unsatisfied with themselves and with their life. The pressures of looking your best 24/7 is the reality we live in today. Improving your outlook on life must be something you work at. It takes time and develops just like any other habit. Realizing that failure is ok is an important step towards a healthier mindset. A good question to ask yourself when you’re in what might seem like a bad situation is: what is one opportunity that can come from his situation? Most things in life do not come easy, many of us experience setbacks. Take time to process the thoughts and feelings that arise from situations. Forcing optimistic thinking when you’re still in a state of shock or turmoil is not as effective. It also helps to slow down. Life moves fast
enough as it is, when you move to fast as well stress usually builds up. Stress harbors negative thoughts, so by taking time to yourself even if it is just a couple of minutes to destress your mind and body calm down too. At a much slower pace positive and constructive thinking begins to happen again. Vague fears can also cloud judgement. Being afraid of not living up to everyone’s standards is a major fear today. Putting yourself out there on social media or lack of should not stem from wanting please or displease others. Chances are you cannot receive approval from everyone, so worry about approval from yourself. Fearing if you do not get enough likes is WACK, it is what is on the inside that counts. By putting yourself before others, (when it comes at the cost of your mental state) and realizing that you need to put yourself first sometimes is positive and will help you grow into a good vibe spreading machine. How you respond is another way to tell if you have an optimistic outlook. Negative comments or jabs from other people is hurtful, but your response is what will make you a better person at the end of the day. Take time to think about how you want to handle the situation. Don’t make hasty decisions (again slow your life down). Sometimes no response is necessary, and this can show that you are confident in yourself and mature. Letting go is a crucial power your brain has and can dramatically influence your positive state of mind. The best advice we can give you though is to remember that we are all human and mistakes are going to be made but staying positive and optimistic about life can help you carry out your purpose. It is cliché and we know it, but it is true and has made a world of difference here in our lives too at Resurfaced. Growing up is a thing that everyone goes through and having a healthy positive outlook on any situation helps you stand out and be remembered by it and hey maybe you can influence how someone looks at their life too. 19

Boys ask: How to dress for a first date First dates are a nerve-racking experience, saying all the right things, casual conversation to connect with the person, natural chemistry, always trying to impress. At Resurfaced we have some fashionable advice for boys on how to dress and accessorize for a first date. Dressing to impress is an important factor on a first date, next to being yourself, it’s a top priority. If you’re not so designer or fashionable, that’s okay! You can still look good with a simple outfit. If your style is more on the simple side, a casual white t-shirt, khaki pants with a tapered skinny silhouette, a nice slim jacket to make the fit, with accessories like a cool watch, and some clear glasses, will go a long way. With styles coming back to surface from the 80’s, a leather jacket look is a great choice. With a fitted t-shirt under the classic leather jacket, a slim pair of black or dark washed jeans, and some fashionable short boots, with a nice watch and black leather belt, will be classified as a look that could kill. For a more sophisticated look, a cardigan over a white or black slim tee, with nice and skinny dark wash jean, nice shoes and belt, and even a watch of course, goes perfectly. Bringing back 70’s vibes, denim on denim is a good way to go. With a denim
10
jacket over a white short-sleeve polo and a pair of denim jeans, styled with a pair of white sneakers, and even try cuffing the bottom hem of the jeans, it’s a great look. These are all great looks to rock at a first date, in style, casual but cool, great fits to impress your date. Depending on your personal style, the clothes you already have, where you and your date are going and what you are going to do, you can choose between any of these outfits. With these pairing, it is important to dress and accessorize well. A lot of simple and cool accessories can make an outfit look even better and tie it all together. Some are mentioned with the outfits, for example, a black belt, plain of with a more edgy look to it, glasses, black or clear, shoes, sneakers or boots, and of course a nice watch will go a long way. With different decades resurfacing and 2019 mixing edgy style with casual cool, any guy should have the confidence to go out and get that girl.
